- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and you're Luna, right? Luna: That's me. And I'm ready for another tiny lesson. Last time we talked about the sun and the rain. This time, could we do something a little more... practical? Lucas: Practical, I like that. How about we learn some city places? You know, when you're walking around Addis Ababa or any Ethiopian town, you're going to need to find things. Like a bank, or a post office. Luna: Oh, that's useful. I always get lost trying to find a post office. So what's the word for bank? Lucas: Bank is ባንክ. Say it with me: ባንክ. Luna: ባንክ. Okay, that's pretty close to English, which helps. Lucas: Exactly, and you'll hear it all the time. Now, how about post office? That's ፖስታ ቤት. Luna: ፖስታ ቤት. Hmm, a little trickier, but I think I've got it. Lucas: Nice. Now, imagine you're walking down the street and you need to find the bank. So 'where is the bank?' That uses the 'where' word we learned before, የት. Lucas: You're connecting the dots. Can you try it? Yeah, it feels good. Lucas: And if you're looking for the post office, you'd say, That's like 'where is the post office?'. Lucas: Perfect. Now, let's put these into a tiny scene. You're at a hotel, and you need to send a package. What do you say to the receptionist? Luna: Umm... I need to go to the post office. Wait, is that right? Lucas: That's exactly right. You're using 'I want' which we've practiced before. Great job. Luna: Thanks. So we've got bank, post office, and how to ask where they are. This is great for when I'm exploring. And hey, speaking of exploring, I was thinking about how Fexingo has helped me get this far. It's so nice to have these short episodes that fit into my day. If you're like me and you've been learning with us, maybe you've found it helpful too. If so, and you want to keep the show ad-free, you could support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It's a small way to keep the episodes coming. Lucas: That's a lovely thought, Luna. Every little bit helps us keep making these lessons. Now, where were we? Oh right, we were just about to practice 'I need to go to the post office' one more time. Say it with me: Lucas: Beautiful. Now, let's switch it up. What if you need to go to the bank instead? Try saying, 'I need to go to the bank' in Amharic. Luna: Uhh, would it be Lucas: Exactly. You've got the pattern down. Luna: So we can swap in any place. This is so cool. Can we practice a little dialogue? Like, you're a stranger on the street, and I ask you where the bank is. Lucas: Sure. I'll be the stranger. You walk up to me and say, 'ባንኩ የት ነው?' Lucas: And I'd say, 'በቀጥታ ይሂዱ' which means 'go straight', but that's for another episode. For now, just knowing how to ask is a big step. Luna: That's true. I'm feeling more confident already. Lucas: You've got them all. Let's do a quick review. Repeat after me: ባንክ. Lucas: And the longer one: Whew, that one's a mouthful, but I'll keep practicing. Lucas: And that's the secret. Practice makes perfect. I'm so proud of you, Luna. You're really building your Amharic step by step. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. And thanks to all our listeners for joining us. Remember, you can support the show at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, but no pressure. Just keep practicing these phrases and you'll be finding your way around in no time. Lucas: That's right. We'll see you next time for more Amharic with Fexingo. Take care, everyone.
