- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:03Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal, coming to you from Houston, site of the
- 0:07Speaker 1: World Baseball Classic. Pool be We'll be talking about USA Mexico.
- 0:11Speaker 1: We will be talking about Trek schoobl and a whole
- 0:14Speaker 1: lot more this morning. Now, all of our World Baseball
- 0:17Speaker 1: Classic coverage is brought to you by our friends at
- 0:20Speaker 1: Fox one, which is live stream all your Fox favorites
- 0:24Speaker 1: together in one place, including all WBC games over the
- 0:27Speaker 1: next few weeks, and after that the best MLB action
- 0:32Speaker 1: all season long. All right, So here we go. First
- 0:35Speaker 1: real test for the US is tonight in Houston at
- 0:39Speaker 1: Dikin Park against Team Mexico. The environment is going to
- 0:43Speaker 1: be intense, It's going to be electric. I would not
- 0:47Speaker 1: be surprised in the least if the crowd is more
- 0:50Speaker 1: pro Mexico than pro USA. Of course, the Mexican American
- 0:54Speaker 1: community in Houston is immense, about eight hundred thousand, I believe,
- 0:58Speaker 1: and a lot of them could be here tonight. So
- 1:01Speaker 1: it's going to be a great atmosphere and it could
- 1:03Speaker 1: be should be actually a great game. Now, you saw
- 1:07Speaker 1: after the last USKA game, Mark Durosa, the manager, said
- 1:11Speaker 1: that these are the best thirty players in the world.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And if you read Bob Knightingale this morning, Benji Gill
- 1:17Speaker 1: of Team Mexico, he's their manager, kind of challenged that
- 1:20Speaker 1: and said, well, what about the Dominican Republic, what about Japan,
- 1:24Speaker 1: what about Venezuela, and maybe what about Mexico. Mexico has
- 1:29Speaker 1: beaten Team USA three straight times in this tournament, going
- 1:33Speaker 1: back to two thousand and six, and that includes an
- 1:36Speaker 1: eleven to five victory in the last tournament in twenty
- 1:39Speaker 1: twenty three. What we've seen so far from Team USA,
- 1:43Speaker 1: of course, is utter dominance. Two exhibition games in Arizona
- 1:48Speaker 1: and then two games here against Brazil and great bitten Britain.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Excuse me, the combined score of those games, if you
- 1:55Speaker 1: put the four of them together, is fifty three to eleven,
- 2:00Speaker 1: up eleven runs. In four games they've scored fifty three. Okay,
- 2:04Speaker 1: but these were all just preludes, kind of addressed rehearsals
- 2:07Speaker 1: for the real thing, which starts tonight. Now where we
- 2:10Speaker 1: are in this tournament, Mexico, Italy, and the US are
- 2:15Speaker 1: all tied with two and zero records, So the winner
- 2:18Speaker 1: tonight has a step up toward the quarterfinals, a real
- 2:23Speaker 1: advantage going toward the quarterfinals. It's still possible after tonight
- 2:27Speaker 1: that all three teams I just mentioned, Italy, Mexico in
- 2:30Speaker 1: the US finished three and one, in which case we
- 2:33Speaker 1: go to the tiebreakers. And if you're paying attention, if
- 2:36Speaker 1: you were just watching the Korea Australia game, you know
- 2:39Speaker 1: that the tiebreakers in the WBC are a little bit funky.
- 2:43Speaker 1: It's the run quotient differential, and Korea advanced because it
- 2:48Speaker 1: had a better ratio of runs allowed to out than Australia,
- 2:53Speaker 1: and it came down to how many runs they scored
- 2:55Speaker 1: in this last game, the differential between the two it
- 2:58Speaker 1: was seven to two Korea. Anyway, we don't have to
- 3:01Speaker 1: talk about that yet with regard to this particular pool
- 3:05Speaker 1: with the US, Italy and Mexico, but obviously tonight has
- 3:09Speaker 1: men's importance. Tonight we're going to see Paul Skins. We're
- 3:13Speaker 1: going to see Paul Skans in the World Baseball Classic
- 3:15Speaker 1: for the first time. We're gonna see Mexico run a
- 3:18Speaker 1: bullpen game guy named Manny Pareta, who has three Major
- 3:23Speaker 1: League appearances in his career, all in twenty twenty one
- 3:26Speaker 1: with Baltimore is going to start for Mexico, but he
- 3:30Speaker 1: is probably just an opener. Mexico's in an interesting position.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I can remember last time they had Julio Urias, they
- 3:37Speaker 1: had Patrick Sandoval, they had a pretty good rotation. This
- 3:41Speaker 1: time they don't have either of those guys, and within
- 3:43Speaker 1: the last month and a half, Cody Ponce, Taj Bradley,
- 3:47Speaker 1: and Jose Urchati have all withdrawn for various reasons. So
- 3:52Speaker 1: this is going to be quite the interesting test, both
- 3:55Speaker 1: for Mexico and for the US. This is the best
- 3:57Speaker 1: lineup the US has, of course faced. It's one that
- 4:01Speaker 1: includes Randia rose Arena as well as Jonathan Aronda from
- 4:07Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Rays and some newcomers. Joey Ortiz, Nick Gonzales.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Jaron Duran from the Red Sox is in that lineup
- 4:15Speaker 1: as well. It's a good lineup. So again, we're all
- 4:18Speaker 1: looking forward to this. If you remember the last tournament,
- 4:22Speaker 1: Mexico came really close to actually winning it. They were
- 4:26Speaker 1: up by one run in the ninth ending of their
- 4:28Speaker 1: semi final against Japan. What happened? Show Hey, Leadolph double
- 4:33Speaker 1: walked to Yeshida and then the two run double, the
- 4:35Speaker 1: go ahead double by going to Taka Modakami now with
- 4:38Speaker 1: the White Sox. Of course, Japan wins that game, and
- 4:41Speaker 1: who knows. If Mexico had survived in that semi final,
- 4:45Speaker 1: maybe they would have beaten the US, but that of
- 4:48Speaker 1: course is not how it went. So here we go tonight,
- 4:52Speaker 1: Mexico and the US. And if you've been watching the
- 4:55Speaker 1: World Baseball Classic so far, what you've seen, of course,
- 4:59Speaker 1: from around the different pools is a number of electric moments.
- 5:04Speaker 1: There's a passion in this tournament that simply does not
- 5:07Speaker 1: exist in regular season baseball, and it can't exist in
- 5:10Speaker 1: regular season baseball when you're playing one hundred and sixty
- 5:13Speaker 1: two games. This is a seven game sprint, seven game
- 5:17Speaker 1: sprint to the championship, and that is what makes it
- 5:21Speaker 1: so unique. And we've seen as well over the years.
- 5:25Speaker 1: This is now the sixth Classic, but over the years,
- 5:28Speaker 1: starting in two thousand and six when the tournament was introduced,
- 5:32Speaker 1: the passion in Latin American countries in particular is really high.
- 5:38Speaker 1: The passion in the Asian countries, as we've seen in
- 5:41Speaker 1: the telecasts from Korea and Japan, really high. And here
- 5:46Speaker 1: I wouldn't say it's quite that high, and fans are
- 5:48Speaker 1: torn between their guys playing in the WBC when they
- 5:51Speaker 1: could be getting ready for the season. We'll get into
- 5:53Speaker 1: that with mister Schooble, but it seems to me that
- 5:57Speaker 1: in recent years, certainly the last tournament and the Tani
- 6:01Speaker 1: striking out of trout for the final out, interest has
- 6:04Speaker 1: grown and it is a lot of fun. It's one
- 6:06Speaker 1: of the most fun things I cover, and I look
- 6:09Speaker 1: forward to it every year. Now the other pools might
- 6:12Speaker 1: want to talk a little bit about them. Right in
- 6:15Speaker 1: pools see Otania and Japan, they've already advanced, they've gone
- 6:19Speaker 1: three and zero, and then we saw just now Korea
- 6:22Speaker 1: win that three way tipebreaker with Australia and Chinese tape.
- 6:27Speaker 1: That is now decided. It's going to be Japan and Korea.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Chinese tape is out, Australia is out. Japan and Korea
- 6:35Speaker 1: go on to Miami. Now in Pool A, that is
- 6:40Speaker 1: the one where you will have two teams come to
- 6:42Speaker 1: Houston to face their quarterfinal, and then of course the
- 6:46Speaker 1: USA pool. That pool is led by US. I'm sorry,
- 6:51Speaker 1: it's led by Puerto Rico and Cuba. Right now, both
- 6:54Speaker 1: teams two and oh, Canada one and one and then
- 6:57Speaker 1: pool D. The team that I think has a really
- 7:01Speaker 1: good chance of winning this tournament, maybe the favorite in
- 7:03Speaker 1: this tournament, the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic in two
- 7:07Speaker 1: games so far against the Netherlands and Nicaragua has outscored
- 7:11Speaker 1: its opponents twenty four to four. Mercy ruled Nicaragua yesterday.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And that lineup with Guerrero and Tatis and Machado and
- 7:23Speaker 1: Marte and Perdomo, even without Jeremy Panu who has that
- 7:26Speaker 1: broken finger, Julio Rodriguez, I forgot him, and a number
- 7:30Speaker 1: of others, that lineup is, in my estimation, easily at
- 7:34Speaker 1: the level of the Team USA lineup. And if these
- 7:38Speaker 1: two teams should meet, it would be something to behold.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And I'm not discounting Japan or am I discounting Venezuela
- 7:45Speaker 1: in any way, But I would love to see a
- 7:48Speaker 1: Team USA Dominican Republic final. That would be awesome. So
- 7:53Speaker 1: we've got a lot to get to. We've got a
- 7:55Speaker 1: lot to talk about. With regard to mister Trek Schoobl
- 7:58Speaker 1: I referred to him earlier and his decision on whether
- 8:01Speaker 1: to stay with Team USA or go back to the
- 8:03Speaker 1: Detroit Tigers, from the WBC through the World Series to
- 8:07Speaker 1: the World Cup, to NASCAR and IndyCar. With Fox One,

- 8:24Speaker 1: and conditions. Fox One streaming now, and we'll be right
- 8:27Speaker 1: back with the Inside Dish. Well, well, well, all right,
- 8:37Speaker 1: time now for the inside Dish, the part of the
- 8:39Speaker 1: show where I talk about maybe a story I've written,
- 8:41Speaker 1: maybe something going on in the game, And today it's
- 8:44Speaker 1: going to be both. I wrote about this, we talked
- 8:47Speaker 1: about it on the broadcast on Saturday night. It is
- 8:50Speaker 1: the single biggest issue with regard to Team USA and
- 8:53Speaker 1: the WBC at the moment, and it's Trek Schooble. Will
- 8:57Speaker 1: he stay or will he go? And as I wrote,
- 9:01Speaker 1: this is for him a very difficult and intensely personal decision.
- 9:06Speaker 1: On one hand, he wants to stay with Team USA.
- 9:09Speaker 1: He wants to pitch again. Remember the plan was for
- 9:12Speaker 1: him to pitch only once in this tournament, not twice.
- 9:15Speaker 1: But after being around the team, after seeing the closeness,
- 9:19Speaker 1: after wearing the Jersey Team USA, having USA on his chest,
- 9:23Speaker 1: he feels torn. And in an interview that he did
- 9:25Speaker 1: with a few reporters, including myself after the game Saturday night,
- 9:30Speaker 1: we could really see and tell how torn he was.
- 9:34Speaker 1: And as I wrote, you can see right there as
- 9:36Speaker 1: Tarrek schoolbl ways sticking around Team USA. His decision shouldn't
- 9:40Speaker 1: be criticized. Now I have my reasons for saying that,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and I'm going to get into that, but here is
- 9:46Speaker 1: essentially the decision that he faces. If he pitches for
- 9:49Speaker 1: Team USA, he takes on potentially additional injury risk, He
- 9:55Speaker 1: possibly disrupts his preparation for the regular season. And this
- 9:58Speaker 1: is a guy entering his walkiear, with the potential for
- 10:01Speaker 1: a four hundred million dollar contract when he has had
- 10:04Speaker 1: Tommy John surgery in twenty seventeen when he was at
- 10:07Speaker 1: Seattle University University, and flexer tendon surgery in August of
- 10:12Speaker 1: twenty twenty two. That was when he was with the
- 10:16Speaker 1: Detroit Tigers. So there's an injury history there. There is
- 10:20Speaker 1: risk there. And in my view and what I wrote,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and I've been adamant about this, for him to pitch
- 10:26Speaker 1: at all, that was something of a surprise. Traditionally, we
- 10:31Speaker 1: do not see American pitchers in their walk years pitch
- 10:35Speaker 1: in the WBC. That's not something that has happened. So
- 10:38Speaker 1: for School to take them ound, even against Great Britain,
- 10:41Speaker 1: an inferior opponent, that said something about his willingness to
- 10:45Speaker 1: do this, his commitment to do this. There was some
- 10:48Speaker 1: risk in that guys are not geared up to throw
- 10:50Speaker 1: ninety five miles an hour for sixty pitches at this
- 10:54Speaker 1: time of year. Now, the other side of this is
- 10:57Speaker 1: if he leaves, and here's the problem that he faces
- 11:00Speaker 1: with regard to the scrutiny he is under. The cynicism
- 11:04Speaker 1: he might face. People are going to say, okay, man,
- 11:07Speaker 1: he pitched once. Great, he pitched against Great Britain. Great,
- 11:11Speaker 1: what's the big deal here? Why can't he pitch again?
- 11:14Speaker 1: Why not take that chance for his country? And listen.
- 11:19Speaker 1: People are entitled to their points of view. But School
- 11:22Speaker 1: has earned his free agency, he will earn it or
- 11:24Speaker 1: have earned it with six years of service, and he
- 11:27Speaker 1: has again potentially four hundred million dollars plus at stake.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So for him, this is not the easiest thing in
- 11:34Speaker 1: the world to decide. And again I see both sides
- 11:39Speaker 1: of it. But I was pretty strong in this column
- 11:42Speaker 1: I know about saying, hey, let's take a step back here,
- 11:46Speaker 1: Let's maybe see both sides of this, see the nuance
- 11:49Speaker 1: in this decision, See that it is not an easy
- 11:52Speaker 1: choice to make. He's got people pulling at him on
- 11:55Speaker 1: both sides. I don't know that he's gotten much pressure
- 11:58Speaker 1: from Team USA, but so certainly just being around the
- 12:01Speaker 1: players and the manager, Mark de Rosa, and the staff,
- 12:04Speaker 1: he senses how important this is to everyone involved. The
- 12:08Speaker 1: players love being here, they love being a part of this.
- 12:12Speaker 1: And the other side of this is his agent, Scott Bors,
- 12:15Speaker 1: whose job is to protect Trerek Schoubl's interest, his long
- 12:19Speaker 1: term financial future, the Detroit Tigers, who will be paying
- 12:23Speaker 1: him thirty two million dollars this year after losing to
- 12:26Speaker 1: him in arbitration, we should say, and of course his family,
- 12:29Speaker 1: who I'm sure has a vested stake in this as well.
- 12:32Speaker 1: So we don't know at this stage Monday morning, as
- 12:37Speaker 1: we go to You Live, what exactly Tarrek Schoolbel is
- 12:40Speaker 1: doing just yet, but we do know that this whole
- 12:45Speaker 1: scenario stems in part from what has happened in the
- 12:50Speaker 1: past and how everything has gotten to this point. What
- 12:53Speaker 1: do I mean by that? The Royal Baseball Classic, as
- 12:56Speaker 1: we know, is played in mid March. It's not a
- 12:59Speaker 1: perfect time for a baseball tournament, not when players are
- 13:03Speaker 1: getting ready for the season. Now, players have learned over
- 13:06Speaker 1: the years if they're going to be in the WBC
- 13:08Speaker 1: to start gearing up earlier. But there's always been the
- 13:11Speaker 1: threat of injury, even a flucash injury such as the
- 13:15Speaker 1: one i'd when Diaz suffered in twenty three or the
- 13:17Speaker 1: one Jeremy's Panya just suffered this year. So there is that,
- 13:22Speaker 1: and Scooble has said if this thing was in the
- 13:25Speaker 1: middle of the season, it would be no problem. I'd
- 13:28Speaker 1: be geared up. I'd pitch in it every single time.
- 13:31Speaker 1: And with the potential for Major League Baseball players to
- 13:34Speaker 1: be in the Olympics in twenty twenty eight, that whole
- 13:38Speaker 1: scenario could eventually come to pass an international tournament at
- 13:42Speaker 1: mid season, but that's not the schedule we have right now. Now.
- 13:46Speaker 1: The other factor here, the other thing that would make
- 13:49Speaker 1: this maybe not an issue, is if Scooble was under
- 13:53Speaker 1: long term contract already to the Detroit Tigers. Now the
- 13:57Speaker 1: Tigers whatever they've offered him, so far has obviously been insufficient,
- 14:02Speaker 1: and part of this is on Schooble as well. He
- 14:05Speaker 1: is most likely, as a Scott Borers client, not interested
- 14:08Speaker 1: in signing a long term extension, not when he is
- 14:12Speaker 1: less than a year away from having thirty teams bid
- 14:14Speaker 1: for him instead of one can understand his position there,
- 14:18Speaker 1: and you can understand the Tigers saying why should we
- 14:21Speaker 1: even bid when most likely he's going to hit the
- 14:23Speaker 1: open market anyway. So all of these forces are swirling
- 14:28Speaker 1: around Trek's Scooble, and again this is a difficult spot
- 14:33Speaker 1: for him. It's a spot where he's almost certain to
- 14:36Speaker 1: be criticized either way. And as I wrote, in an
- 14:41Speaker 1: age in which we're obsessed with social media, an age
- 14:44Speaker 1: where everyone has a voice, in which there really is,
- 14:47Speaker 1: as I said, a cacophony of the complaints going on
- 14:50Speaker 1: on all issues at all times, this is one where
- 14:55Speaker 1: we can look at the glass as more half full
- 14:59Speaker 1: than half empty. And what am I saying by that?
- 15:02Speaker 1: What I'm saying is from a half full perspective. Trek's
- 15:05Speaker 1: Scougle already has pitched for Team USA. He made that choice,
- 15:10Speaker 1: He made the sacrifice to leave his team to pitch
- 15:13Speaker 1: for the national team, and whatever risk was incurred with
- 15:17Speaker 1: that with throwing forty one pitches in a high intensity environment,
- 15:20Speaker 1: he took it and he pitched really well after allowing
- 15:23Speaker 1: that leadoff home run by Nate Eaton, three innings that
- 15:25Speaker 1: were largely brilliant. So from Team USA's perspective, they got
- 15:31Speaker 1: three innings out of Trek Schooble that really, in most
- 15:33Speaker 1: years we would not have expected them to get potential
- 15:36Speaker 1: free agent pitcher facing the potential largest pitching contract in history.
- 15:41Speaker 1: That was not going to happen in the past. Now,
- 15:44Speaker 1: from the Detroit Tiger's perspective, and from Schoobl's own perspective,
- 15:48Speaker 1: if he goes back to Detroit and does not pitch again,
- 15:51Speaker 1: and oh, by the way, there's no guarantee the US
- 15:55Speaker 1: would even get to the final, which is probably when
- 15:57Speaker 1: schoobl would be lined up for. So this might not
- 16:00Speaker 1: even surface as an issue. It's more talking point right
- 16:03Speaker 1: now as the US advances and tries to advance to
- 16:08Speaker 1: the knockout round. But the assumption is they're going to
- 16:11Speaker 1: get to at least the quarterfinals, the knockout stage, and
- 16:15Speaker 1: then go from there. So from the Detroit Tigers' perspective,
- 16:18Speaker 1: and from Schooble's own personal perspective, if he goes back
- 16:22Speaker 1: to them, Okay, he's done his part for Team USA.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Now he's committing to his team. He's going to pitch
- 16:27Speaker 1: Opening Day for his team. He's going to enter a
- 16:29Speaker 1: year in which he's earning thirty two million and give
- 16:32Speaker 1: everything he has to the Detroit Tigers again. Half full
- 16:36Speaker 1: from their perspective as well, even if he pitches for
- 16:39Speaker 1: Team USA once more, I would say it's half full
- 16:42Speaker 1: for the Tigers. Now we'll see how this all plays out.
- 16:45Speaker 1: We'll see what Schooble ultimately decides. But that half full
- 16:49Speaker 1: thing I'm talking about where both of his teams are
- 16:52Speaker 1: going to benefit from his participation one way or the other.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Tm USA already has benefited the Detroit Tigers. Should he
- 16:59Speaker 1: not pitch again, they will benefit. That is why I believe. Hey,
- 17:03Speaker 1: let's back off a little bit here. Let's take it
- 17:05Speaker 1: easy on Terrek Schooble. He's doing what he can here.
- 17:08Speaker 1: He can't pitch for both teams at both times all
- 17:11Speaker 1: the time. That's not something that he's capable of doing.
- 17:14Speaker 1: He is one man with one left arm. So those
- 17:17Speaker 1: are my thoughts. On Schooble going forward, and again, I've
- 17:21Speaker 1: got to see the US qualify. We've got to see
- 17:23Speaker 1: the US get to the finals. Schedule is another issue
- 17:25Speaker 1: for him here. It doesn't really line up for him
- 17:28Speaker 1: to pitch both in the final and an opening day.
- 17:31Speaker 1: There are all kinds of issues, as I said, but
- 17:34Speaker 1: again I'm going to say it one more time. Class
- 17:37Speaker 1: half full here, not class half empty. We'll be back
- 17:41Speaker 1: after this.
- 17:42Speaker 2: The number one rated ticketing app is seat geek, and
- 17:45Speaker 2: you can get ten percent off on seat geeks app
- 17:48Speaker 2: by using the code territory ten, So you should use it.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Aj Oh, I'm definitely going to use it for WBC
- 17:54Speaker 1: games in Miami because I want to go to the
- 17:56Speaker 1: semi finals. In the finals, they're going to be sold out.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Absolutely a spring training game for the people out there
- 18:00Speaker 2: who want to go to spring training games.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Absolutely great idea. Best seats radar one through ten, and
- 18:04Speaker 1: I recently had to use sea Geek to buy tickets
- 18:06Speaker 1: to a Florida Gators basketball game that was sold out.
- 18:09Speaker 1: So I love the code territory ten percent off and
- 18:12Speaker 1: the rating is the best.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Yes, he's talking about each ticket rated on a scale
- 18:16Speaker 2: of one to ten, So you know you're getting a

- 18:41Speaker 1: Thank you to see Geek. Back here with the Grilling
- 18:50Speaker 1: Kin segment of our show. Let's get to your questions
- 18:53Speaker 1: right now. First one comes from videos two o seven,
- 18:57Speaker 1: who asked, is there any chance that you Cheetah's stock
- 19:00Speaker 1: could arise enough from the WBCD that the Red Sox
- 19:03Speaker 1: could be able to trade him. I would say the
- 19:05Speaker 1: answer to that is yes, and Yashidah has shown batting
- 19:09Speaker 1: clean up for Sama or Japan that he is still
- 19:12Speaker 1: a capable offensive player. Now defensively that's another question. But
- 19:17Speaker 1: the money is a problem obviously the two years that
- 19:20Speaker 1: have left the fairlyest significant dollars and clearly the role
- 19:23Speaker 1: has been a problem with the Red Sox as well,
- 19:25Speaker 1: or at least where he currently stands on that roster.
- 19:28Speaker 1: But yeah, this is a contributing major league player. This
- 19:31Speaker 1: is a solid hitter. And is he everything the Red
- 19:34Speaker 1: Sox thought when they signed him to a five year,
- 19:36Speaker 1: ninety million dollar deal. No, he is not that, but
- 19:39Speaker 1: he is a guy yes that I can imagine some
- 19:42Speaker 1: team taking. If I were a low revenue team, I'd
- 19:45Speaker 1: definitely be interested in Yashidah if I had a spot
- 19:48Speaker 1: kind of in a DH way where I could fit
- 19:50Speaker 1: him in and have the Red Sox pay most of
- 19:52Speaker 1: the money and go about it that way. So yes,
- 19:55Speaker 1: I would say Yashidah is raising his stock or has
- 19:58Speaker 1: the potential to raise his stock in the WBC. All right,
- 20:03Speaker 1: next question this when comes from Tyler Maxsmith, who asks, oh,
- 20:06Speaker 1: when will Jerkson Profar's appeal be heard? Decided to expect
- 20:10Speaker 1: the Braves to use that extra money to spring or
- 20:12Speaker 1: save it for the trade deadline? Both good questions. Now,
- 20:16Speaker 1: my understanding initially was that the appeal would be expedited.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Now I thought that meant wow, it would be a
- 20:22Speaker 1: couple of days. But my understanding of expedition in this
- 20:25Speaker 1: case is it'll be a couple of weeks at least,
- 20:28Speaker 1: maybe even a couple of months before this appeal is decided,
- 20:32Speaker 1: and we know exactly what's going to happen with Jerks
- 20:35Speaker 1: and Profars, So it would seem to me the Braves
- 20:38Speaker 1: are going to be potentially reluctant to move until they
- 20:41Speaker 1: have greater clarity on whether they will be paying Jerks
- 20:45Speaker 1: and Profar this year, and again it's probably going to
- 20:47Speaker 1: be weeks, not months. At the same time, they've got
- 20:50Speaker 1: to put a better team on the field than they
- 20:52Speaker 1: currently have, and they had pitching issues starting pitching issues
- 20:56Speaker 1: well before this happened, and we've written about them, we've
- 20:59Speaker 1: talked about them, and that's something they still can address.
- 21:02Speaker 1: But to the point of the question, yes, they still
- 21:06Speaker 1: could wait until the trade deadline to do something of
- 21:08Speaker 1: significance because they don't have exact clarity. They don't know
- 21:12Speaker 1: yet if they will be saving that fifteen million this
- 21:16Speaker 1: year or not. It certainly appears that way. It is
- 21:19Speaker 1: extremely hard for players to win appeals after they've tested positive,
- 21:23Speaker 1: but you don't know for sure. And how dumb would
- 21:27Speaker 1: the Braves feel if somehow Profar was reinstated and then
- 21:31Speaker 1: they spent all that money, If they don't have it budgeted.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Could they spend the money? Yes, we know that their
- 21:36Speaker 1: ownership has the money. I'm not getting into that. I'm
- 21:39Speaker 1: just talking about how they operate as opposed to maybe
- 21:42Speaker 1: what should be. All right, next question, This one comes
- 21:47Speaker 1: from Carter Hawkins one thirteen. Can are people sleeping on
- 21:50Speaker 1: Moys's bellisteros for NL Rookie of the Year. Now this
- 21:53Speaker 1: is not Carter Hawkins Burner account. Carter Hawkins, of course,
- 21:57Speaker 1: is general manager of the Chicago Cubs under Jed Hoyer,
- 22:01Speaker 1: the president of Baseball Operations. Bellistara certainly could be a possibility.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I would say the leader in the clubhouse right now
- 22:07Speaker 1: is Connor Griffin. Of course, he has to make the
- 22:10Speaker 1: team with Pittsburgh, and even if he doesn't, comes up
- 22:14Speaker 1: I don't know, late April, mid May, whenever. The case
- 22:16Speaker 1: might be. His talent is such as we might see
- 22:20Speaker 1: him emerge as Rookie of the year. So he would
- 22:22Speaker 1: be probably the favorite right now, but pretty hard to
- 22:25Speaker 1: handicap Rookie of the Year every year. So Carter Hawkins,
- 22:29Speaker 1: Burner account or whoever you are, I would say there's
- 22:32Speaker 1: a chance. All right, let's get to another question. This
- 22:35Speaker 1: one comes from Red Sox eighteen. I guess what is
- 22:39Speaker 1: the reason Geolito still hasn't signs. That is a very
- 22:42Speaker 1: good question. And Zach Lettel, of course just reaching agreement
- 22:45Speaker 1: yesterday with the Washington Nationals. So really, Geolito is the
- 22:50Speaker 1: only premier starting pitcher left. Premier might be an exaggeration
- 22:53Speaker 1: of his talents, but he is the quality starting pitcher
- 22:56Speaker 1: that remains on the open market. The simple answered to
- 23:00Speaker 1: this question is, hey, he's not getting what he believes
- 23:04Speaker 1: he should get as a free agent, and teams are
- 23:07Speaker 1: not meeting his price. Whether it goes deeper than that,
- 23:10Speaker 1: I don't know, but I've said this, and I said
- 23:12Speaker 1: it about Lttel too. Giledo, perhaps even more so than Lttel,
- 23:17Speaker 1: is a competent, qualified major league pitcher. He's a guy
- 23:21Speaker 1: who could help your staff. So at some point he's
- 23:25Speaker 1: either going to come down on his price, or some
- 23:27Speaker 1: team's going to come up because they become more desperate,
- 23:30Speaker 1: and he's going to get signed. I have no doubt
- 23:32Speaker 1: about that. There are always players who linger on the market,
- 23:36Speaker 1: and you're seeing this now with Giledo and Tommy Fan
- 23:39Speaker 1: From the position player perspective, I spoke last night with
- 23:42Speaker 1: Rowdy Tolez of Team Mexico. He hasn't even gotten a
- 23:45Speaker 1: minor league offer. So there are always players who get
- 23:49Speaker 1: kind of caught in free agency, and that seems to
- 23:51Speaker 1: be what has happened with Giledo. Not sure the exact reasons,
- 23:56Speaker 1: but always with these things, it comes down to a
- 23:59Speaker 1: difference price. All right. I want to thank everyone for watching,
- 24:03Speaker 1: everyone for listening. You know where to find us every
