- 1:30Let me bring in quickly though, Jeff Jenkins from the newsroom, because
- 1:34story has just broken the last couple of hours about a shooting in the Eastern
- 1:38Panhandle up in the Martinsburg area involved in some state troopers. Jeff, good
- 1:42morning. What do we know, Well, as sometimes the way these often
- 1:45happen, Dave is at police and this case State police troopers are trying to
- 1:49execute a warrant on a man. They're in Martinsburg and they were executing trying
- 1:57to execute an arrest warrant on battery. And so they went to the man's
- 2:02house and men identified as sixty year old Tobias Gainey of Martinsburg winter his home
- 2:07last night around ten fifty tried to execute a service warrant he would not come
- 2:10out. This is what State Police say. And so the troopers two troopers
- 2:15here, Trooper Aad Spessert, and they were talking with Gainey. They were
- 2:22outside, he was inside. He would not he would not come out,
- 2:25and so then they made the decision to enter the residents. So they had
- 2:30the arrest warrant, and so they they went, they entered the resident and
- 2:35they police say that Gainey opened fire on the troopers. They returned fire.
- 2:39So in the exchange of the gunfire, Trooper Bean was shot four times.
- 2:46Trooper Spessort was shot once, and Bean had to undergo surgery last night.
- 2:52We don't know anymore. The release from the State Police says that he suffered
- 2:58serious injuries, but he isn't fable condition following the surgery, and Spessiert was
- 3:04kept for observation after he was shot and they had returned fire on Gainey and
- 3:08Gainey was pronounced dead. And so that's kind of all we know right now.
- 3:14We hope to hear more from State Police, maybe on specifics of Trooper
- 3:16Bean's injuries, but that's kind of the circumstances that have remember repeated many times
- 3:24trying to execute a warrant for an arrest and you come up against the armed
- 3:30individuals. So that's what appears, that's what happened last night. All right,
- 3:34Well, I know, Jeff, you get folks in the newsroom,
- 3:36we'll be talking more about and hope you'll have more on to comeing up on
- 3:38talk line. I appreciate you coming in and talk about. Thanks a lot,
- 3:39Jeff, Jeff Jenkins from the newsroom again this story out of Martinsburg this
- 3:44morning about these troopers that attempting to execute a warrant and the troopers were shot.
- 3:51One of them appears to be shot one time, the other at least
- 3:53four times. And Trooper Bean, as Jeff said, is undergoing surgery this
- 3:59hour. Have more coming up in the news throughout the day, and of
- 4:02course also on talk line with Hopy At ten six Dave Allen showing five Any
- 4:06Life comes to you from the Parmars Store studio. There's not a Parmar store

- 4:21you by the Thornhill Lotter Group. You know, the grand opening celebration of
- 4:25the all new, redesigned Thornhill Toyota is happening for the rest of the month
- 4:29and you can join all of us the stations of WVRC Media Charleston Broadcasting Live.
- 4:33We're all going to be there tomorrow from the all new Thornhill Toyota on
- 4:38the Thornhill Motor Myleon Chapmanville. If you need more details on that, you
- 4:41can go to Thornhill Toyota wv dot COM's Mayor Monday, we bring in a
- 4:46different mayor from the area to talk about things going on in their particular communities.
- 4:49This morning, it's a village of Barbersville. Mayor Chris Tatum is here.
- 4:53Good morning, sir, How are you morning, Dave A, thank
- 4:55you for being here. Thank you very impatient hanging out. We had to
- 4:58get to that news of course, with top of the show. Before I
- 5:01forget, let me say Merry Christmas to everyone there and hope everyone has a
- 5:04happy and save twenty twenty four. Mayor, Yeah you too, my friend.
- 5:09It's a full Christmas in full swing here. As you well know,
- 5:12we have our holiday light tour through the park, the Ribbing Christmas light tour.
- 5:17If you haven't been, get down here. And then the village looks
- 5:19like a Hallmark Christmas card right now, So it's a good time to be
- 5:21here. It certainly is. I kind of put a bow, no pun
- 5:26intended, Mayor, I'm not that smart, put a bow on the year
- 5:28twenty twenty three in the village of Barbersville. What kind of year has it
- 5:30been on? What were some of the highlights for you in the village.
- 5:33You know, I think the return of regional soccer was a big thing for
- 5:39us. Also, the improvements made to our new sports facilities. You know,
- 5:43we put synthetic turf and over at our soccer and sports complex. We
- 5:47did that with our Little League complex as well. I think, just really
- 5:51improving the quality of life for our residents. And then you know, we
- 5:55there' s been some big announcements as far as business go, and our avenues
- 6:00are are are at a record breaking years, so we're we're happy about that.
- 6:02We're happy that things are growing here. You know, we we made
- 6:06the announcement about David Busters, which will be the first uh location in the
- 6:11state of West Virginia. Uh so we're happy about that. Uh, the
- 6:15woodm Center for Careers and Technology at at the All Complex had their ribbon cutting
- 6:19as well. We're happy to have that in in our city too. Lots
- 6:25of learning opportunities and lots of expanded learning opportunities for students here in Cable County.
- 6:29And then of course everyone is going to feel the effects of New Course.
- 6:32So we're glad that those folks from New Corps are moving into the area
- 6:36and that and that project is getting off the ground as well. Doesn't it
- 6:41make you feel good, Mayor to say, and again we're talking with Chris
- 6:44tavan The from the village of Barbersville this morning on Mayor mindy, does it
- 6:46make you good? Feel good to say people are moving into West Virginia.
- 6:51I mean it is great. I mean, you know, the doom and
- 6:55gloom has been you know everybody's mantra, I guess for a while. I
- 6:59mean it seems that way. It was always seemed like the negative was pointed
- 7:02out. But man, we have so many positive things going on here and
- 7:05in the state as well. I mean you can you can look at the
- 7:09growth in so many places and uh, you know, we're we are happy
- 7:12to be a part of that. We're happy that people are starting to talk
- 7:15about the willing and able workforce here and realizing that, you know, there's
- 7:18talented West Virginias here that can can do all of that and and be those
- 7:24be those core employees that they need. You look at the expansion of al
- 7:27Con, you look at the you know, the new core thing that I
- 7:30just mentioned, and and then you know, Barbarusville itself has been voted the
- 7:33top retail and shopping destination, uh top to the top place in the state
- 7:39of West Virginia by many national publications. So there's so many good things going
- 7:43here Charleston, the valley and and whatnot. It is an exciting time.
- 7:47So if anybody, if they're not excited, they're not looking for me to
- 7:49be excited about. I would agree with that. And you know you mentioned
- 7:53David Busters. It's too bad to my former producer, Kaitlyn Murphy isn't still
- 7:57around here because it was her dream to have a Dave and Busters in the
- 8:01area. And you know it's not in Charleston, but it is in Barbersville,
- 8:03which is not far away, So it looks like they have that coming.
- 8:07I want to talk about the impact you mentioned it briefly mayor of a
- 8:09sports tourism in the region. You know, last week I had Canawa County
- 8:13Commissioner Ben Selango on the show and he talked about the partnership that's been formed
- 8:18between Kanawak County and Barbersville. Talk about that in detail a little bit for
- 8:24me, how you guys work together and what this has meant specifically for your
- 8:28area. Well, you know, logistically it made sense because we had you
- 8:33know, when those tournaments started coming here, we have a complex big enough
- 8:35to hold that many people because we have sixteen fifteen or sixteen regular you know,
- 8:41regulation sized soccer fields. But having said that, people were staying from
- 8:45Grayson, Kentucky all the way to Clintennitt. So when Shawnee first made the
- 8:50announcement, people were like, oh, we're you know, we're gonna lose
- 8:52people. We'll know because what you do is you make the logistics better for
- 8:56everyone and they keep coming back. There's enough people that come to those tournaments
- 9:01that there's enough ways to spread it around, so to speak. And Shawnee's
- 9:07become a great partner with us because of that. So you you just you
- 9:09make the plan more aesthetic and more logistically pleasing to those people who are coming
- 9:16here. I mean, you're talking thousands of kids in their families. So
- 9:18if they're an if they're a half hour away from their game, or fifteen
- 9:22minutes away from a game, or five minutes away from their game, and
- 9:24you schedule the right people to be in Shawnee at this time, the right
- 9:28people in Barzola at this time, and then you know, you each get
- 9:31the championship at some point. Then it stays fair, but it also keeps
- 9:37those people coming back. So what people are seeing in other areas where those
- 9:41tournaments were happening is they had they had the facilities, but there were people
- 9:46staying so far away. They're driving an hour and a half two hours to
- 9:50get to a game, and they've already traveled in some cases hours and hours
- 9:54to get there because they're from you know, they're from thirteen different states.
- 9:58So if you can make it just more make it easier for them to get
- 10:03to and from their games, to give them things to do shop it whether
- 10:07it's shopping things after the after the after their games, after their tournaments,
- 10:11or it's something that at their their hotel has the amenities that they need,
- 10:16and you can spread that around. They just keep coming back here and twenty
- 10:18two million dollars goes a long way. And you can do that all the
- 10:22way through that corridor by keeping that logistically sound. And I love this.
- 10:26You know that you're talking about Mayor and and and others have talked about here
- 10:28in the Charleston Angry as well, this advantage valley thing. I know,
- 10:31it's something that you really really buy into. Yeah, well it is.
- 10:35I mean, it's it's been said several times, and I think we've all
- 10:39used it now to this to this point, but a rising tide lifts off
- 10:41ships, and we are we're on we're on the verge of a psue nominie
- 10:46for for real, a tsunami for real, because of youth sports tourism.
- 10:50It is a multi billion dollar industry and there is no reason that we all
- 10:54can't have our fair share of that. Yeah, and then when we had
- 10:58the Capital Sports Complex, which is coming it looks like to downtown Charles and
- 11:01that's even going to add even more to them. I just think, I
- 11:05just think there's so much potential because that is you know, these these people
- 11:09are taking their vacations around kids, their children's youth sports schedules. So what
- 11:15I mean, what better way than to keep developing for these people that already
- 11:18know they've had a good experience here and we keep putting things in the cabinet
- 11:22so to speak better for them. I'm all for it. Yeah, got
- 11:26a text here for you, says uh for the mayor. Barbersville would be
- 11:30a perfect the Barber's, the mall would be a perfect location for golf and
- 11:31stuff. Family fun park. Is that something that that you're familiar with?
- 11:37I am, and we you know, I go I go to a conference
- 11:39a few times a year and it's International Associations shopping Centers and retail and restaurant
- 11:46tours and this this conference you can if you can imagine any restaurant or any
- 11:52retail, any uh hard goods location, anything you can find in them all,
- 11:58anything you find in a shopping center. All those people are there and
- 12:03they're looking for places to locate. So we do talk to folks like that.
- 12:07We have talked to them. We talked to Top Golf. I mean,
- 12:09you know, we we you know, we don't. I know that's
- 12:11kind of pie in the sky, but I thought David Buster is six years
- 12:13ago and find the sky. So absolutely. We stop and talk to those
- 12:18folks and we always tell them, here's what's coming, here's here's what the
- 12:20development is in this town here or in these towns in this area. Here's
- 12:24the traffic counts, here's the you know, who else is located there,
- 12:28Who's who who else is locating here? Coming up? Because they all pair
- 12:33well. And if you go, oh, David Buscher's or if you go,
- 12:35oh, you know, we have the largest shopping complex in the state
- 12:39of West Virginia in that area, you know, it makes people start start
- 12:43looking at it. You point out the good, you point out the you
- 12:46point out kind of the numbers of where people are coming from to do their
- 12:48shopping, to come for sports tourism. They start sitting up to take notice.
- 12:52And that's how it all happened with David Butscher. So hopefully, yes,
- 12:54we can have somewhere like that. I would love to have somewhere like
- 12:58that. They're spin offs of top Golf. That Dave and Buster's saying came
- 13:03out, like I said, out of a six year conversation. So I
- 13:05don't want it to go that long. Now. The growth, now,
- 13:09the growth is to the point where people, you know, some of these
- 13:13larger places that we thought were impossible are completely possible. Do you have a
- 13:16time frame for the Dave and Busters, Mayor, Well, I would say
- 13:18next year, sometime in the spring summer. We're talking twenty twenty four,
- 13:22right, yeah, twenty four, Yeah, all right, well, Mayor,
- 13:26it's always a pleasure to have you on the show again. Merry Christmas
- 13:28to you and everyone there in Barbersville. We'll talk in the new year.
- 13:31Thanks a lot. Man. All right, my friend, I'll talk to
- 13:33you soon. Thank you. That's Barbersville Mayor Chris Tatum here on the show,

- 18:00good morning Dave and Mary Christmas to you as well. Thank you for
- 18:03joining us this morning. Now, you have done a lot over the years,
- 18:07and you've appeared in a variety of different roles, even on this show
- 18:11as a House member, special advisor to go to Justice, candidate for State
- 18:18Treasurer. Yes, and now as of last week, you are the State
- 18:22Revenue Secretary, having been appointed to that seat after Dave Hardy was named to
- 18:26the judges bench here in Kanawa County, replacing Judge Joanna Tabbitt who tragically passed
- 18:30away earlier this year. All that having been second graduations, sir, well,
- 18:33thank you. Think I look forward to the to the challenge, to
- 18:36the opportunity, and I look forward to trying to continue in all the good
- 18:41work that my good friend and the high school high school friend, Dave Hardy,
- 18:45so look forward to it, both both of you. The pride of
- 18:48East Bank High School? Is that right? Pioneers forever? Now which one's
- 18:52older? You were? You were Hearty? I think it's really closed graduate
- 18:56graduating the same year. But I think we're like a month apart as far
- 18:57as birthdates. Okay, all right, so explain you hear this term thrown
- 19:02out their state revenue secretary, and Dave Hardy has been all over the state,
- 19:06you know, talking about what and other revenue secretaries have too about what
- 19:10exactly is going on with our finances? Break it down though, what exactly
- 19:14does the state revenue secretary do? Really? If the state revenue secretary has
- 19:18about ten agencies under underneath him or underneath him, But basically, the state
- 19:22Revenue Secretary collects our money, collects our tax dollars, and also operates the
- 19:26lottery, the liquor and and the beer beer beer agencies. So it is
- 19:32basically it is the It is the one entity in West Virginia that that brings
- 19:34money in uh and as we say in cabinet meetings, and all the other
- 19:38folks in the cabinets spend the money. Now, it's an interesting time to
- 19:45look after the revenue of the state of West Virginia. By because in all
- 19:48accounts, and we're going to get into some of those that are a little
- 19:51bit negative, but all accounts overall, we're doing pretty well. Oh yes,
- 19:55I mean that the amount of money coming in the state government is absolutely
- 19:57phenomenal. Uh. We had such a good run to last three or four
- 20:02years. Uh. Some of us related to Cebrice taxes, but also a
- 20:04lot of us related to the economy and how how fast the economy has been
- 20:07growing. And we see new businesses coming in from all around the state.
- 20:11Uh, more jobs, more business equations, more tax dollars. What would
- 20:17you say, and again we're talking with Larry Pack, what would you say?
- 20:19We're doing well, we have all these surpluses whatnot, but we still
- 20:22have issues with jails and corrections. Uh. And there of course related to
- 20:27d h h R. So do we really have these surpluses that the governor
- 20:32and others are speaking of. What do you say to those people? Oh,
- 20:33we definitely have surpluses. I think here's a question, but but we
- 20:37also have challenges. Uh. The when it comes to corrections, mean a
- 20:41lot of those issues I really think have been resolved with new with new leadership.
- 20:45UH. And and the Governor's made the changes necessary there to bring new
- 20:48leadership in and we think a lot of the problems within jails and so forth
- 20:52have been uh have been been taken care of. But there is a problem,
- 20:56you know, where we have we have such an economy that is on
- 20:59fire, there's and so fast is we don't have enough people for the jobs.
- 21:03And so the jobs that are a little bit less attractive are a little
- 21:06bit more difficult to bring people in and keep people in. But we're doing
- 21:10all we can to improve the culture's culture in the jails in the corrections area.
- 21:14We think that's really making it making a difference. We like the leadership
- 21:18that we have in there now and we think they're doing doing well too.
- 21:21But but par again, part of our problem is is we need people to
- 21:23come to West Virginia. We need people to come back to West Virginia to
- 21:26moved out for a job, moved out because of jobs. We need people
- 21:30to come to West Virginia that will help us feel these feel these positions again.
- 21:34We're talking with the state Revenue Secretary Larry Pack was just appointed to the
- 21:37position last week, and I'm gonna have you put on your tourism hat for
- 21:41a moment. I know you're not the state director of Tourism. I mean
- 21:44you've had another you've had several roles. That's not been one of them yet.
- 21:47But when you say we need to get people to move here, what
- 21:49would you say to people that maybe are from West Virginia that moved to you
- 21:53know, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Lexington, wherever they move to, to try
- 21:56to get them to come back, or those that have no tie us to
- 22:00the area, to try to get them to want to move here. What's
- 22:02the big selling point? I think big selling point for West Virginia is the
- 22:04quality of life. It's it's the low cost loving, it's the culture's the
- 22:08people, it's our it's our natural beauty. Uh. There's so many opportunities
- 22:12if you if you like the outdoors and so forth. Uh. This is
- 22:15really the great I really believe, the greatest place in the country to live.
- 22:18Uh. You know my generation, your generation, manty of the younger
- 22:22generations, they've all moved out of West Virginia when they got down high school
- 22:26because we didn't have the jobs. This is the first time in my lifetime
- 22:30that we have jobs, and not only jobs, we have good jobs in
- 22:33West Virginia. And as these companies continue to grow here and build here,
- 22:37we're going to need more people to come in to fill those jobs. And
- 22:38it's a really an exciting, exciting time. So we want the expatriots to
- 22:42go back to come back. You know. The SIN program is really has
- 22:47really worked well, uh that Brad Smith is put together. Explain Explain that
- 22:52program. So the Sin program is basically a program that is tied to particular
- 22:56cities. Brad Smith and his wife were just general enough to put a lot
- 23:00of money behind it. It's it's ran by w and Our Tourism, you
- 23:03know, and it it basically people people apply to come to say it's say
- 23:08it's Louisbourg. It's many people come to Louisbourg and they get certain credits and
- 23:11certain monies if they come come to West Virginia. And that's been a really
- 23:15good program and we have a lot of applications each year. That's is continuing
- 23:19to grow. So this is a really good time. And I think if
- 23:22from a messaging standpoint, we need to do a better job and we're doing
- 23:26we're trying to do a better job to getting that out all across the country.
- 23:30But you know, there's not a grandparent. There's not a parent in
- 23:33West Virginia that doesn't want their kids and grandkids uh to come come back to
- 23:37West Virginia. And we have a jobs at this point. Over the next
- 23:40week or so, and of course you saw that Thanksgiving, you're going to
- 23:41see a lot of license plates rolling through this area with the Ohio plates in
- 23:47North Carolina, Michigan or whatever. We'd like to see some of those transferred
- 23:49to West Virginia. Absolutely, and they are coming back. We're we're we're
- 23:52seeing it. It's slow, but people are are coming back. People are
- 23:56moving in again. The demographic there's numbers take a long there's a long drag
- 23:59on, but well, we will like the numbers we see in the next
- 24:03five to ten years in West Virginia. But Dave Island showing five eighty lives
- 24:06brought to you part by your local insurance experts from Brightway, the Maze Agency
- 24:08of Tay's Valley. From your home, to your car, even to your

- 24:18neighbors called John and Sherry mays today three zero four eight one four two five
- 24:22zero nine or is it brightway Maize dot com. I wanna talk about the
- 24:26governor for a moment now, Larry, you are someone who is very close
- 24:29to Governor Justice and have been for some time. You are, or were,
- 24:33I guess, a special advisor to him, if you have to admit
- 24:37it. What does the biggest misconception that people have about Jim Justice? Well,
- 24:41I still am senior advisor. I think the biggest miss misconception that people
- 24:45don't understand is how much he cares for the people. He uses Toby and
- 24:48Edith all the time, but he really believes that that if it's not good
- 24:53for folks like Toby and Edith, we shouldn't be doing it. He brings
- 24:56that to the cabinet meeting, he seen, brings that to the Governor's office.
- 25:00He brings that into every decision. Is this good for regular people in
- 25:03West Virginia? And if the policy's not good, if it's something that will
- 25:07hurt them, we're not going to do it. If there's something helps them
- 25:10that we're all for it. That's one of the reasons he was so he's
- 25:14so passionate. I buy out the state income tax reduction, because that hits
- 25:18everybody, and he believes that that's one of the best ways to grow West
- 25:21Virginia. But it's also one of the best ways to help our folks.
- 25:23Now, in the midst of all this, I presume you're still a candidate,
- 25:27yes, sir, for State Treasurer, Yes, sir, as well
- 25:30the current treasure of course, Riley Moore instead this time around throwing his proverbial
- 25:33hat in the rain to try to take over the congressional seat held by Alex
- 25:38Mundy. With all this other stuff you're doing, why are you still wanting
- 25:44to be state Treasurer? Now? Well, I had you know, I
- 25:45had two careers in business. One is a CPA for about twenty years helping
- 25:49small businesses. In the next twenty years growing businesses myself, and so once
- 25:55we saw that company, I was looking for what's next. My wife and
- 25:57I were looking for what's next. I still have a lot of energy,
- 26:00I have a lot of passion for West Virginia, and public service seems to
- 26:03be the best place for me to to apply the talents and energy that I
- 26:07still have. Uh. Being a financi person, being a CPA, treasures
- 26:11is a really natural place for me to be. Uh, Rolly Moore has
- 26:15done a wonderful job, particularly I think fighting back against woke companies who would
- 26:19take our money and then work against our economy. In fact, that that's
- 26:22got a nationwide presence of teen states that that he's just tied in with his
- 26:26efforts will continue to keep that going. But in addition to that, I'm
- 26:30a strong believer in in that we shouldn't spend more in our meet and than
- 26:36than than we have that Western you can't afford to have its government growth.
- 26:38So I'll spend a lot of time on the budget. And the last thing
- 26:42is from an economic development standpoint, That's something I've did my entire life.
- 26:47Uh, the the Treasurer has to say in those those impacts as far as
- 26:51how we spend that money and where we spend that money. So I'll spend
- 26:52a lot of time in that area as well. I want to go back
- 26:56to your new role of State Revenue Secretary of you officially taking over. What's
- 27:00the price? First day? Day's your first day? Yes? Yes,
- 27:02and you took off two hours to come in here now twenty minutes say not
- 27:04to our what is the number one what's issue number one? If you if
- 27:08you set down this morning breakfast table and you had your little legal pad out
- 27:12there, things to do today, what's number one? Number one? Uh
- 27:17for this because just because of the time of the year, is getting giving.
- 27:18Getting the governor's budget ready to present to the legislature into the state of
- 27:25West Virginia. We'll do that. I think it's a second Wednesday in January.
- 27:29So we've been working. Really, we've been working on all summer.
- 27:32I've been a part of that process. We're putting the final touches on it.
- 27:34So we've got about two weeks, two and a half weeks to finish.
- 27:37Uh, finish that opportunity and get that ready. That's our that is
- 27:41really, that's really we'll take a lot of our time over the next sixty
- 27:45days. Not only will present it, then we have to be prepared to
- 27:48answer questions so the legislature has the information they need to to make their decision
- 27:52their termination. You know, the governor submits a budget, but the government,
- 27:56but the legislature will passing and amend the budget. So there will be
- 28:00a lot of work with the legislature over the next sixty days to be able
- 28:03to get that done. That's the number one thing really for the legislature.
- 28:06In fact, that's the only thing that we're required to do is pass the
- 28:07budget. We want to be a good partner with them and help get that
- 28:11accomplished. Larry, So it's a pleasure to have you on the show.
- 28:14Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and good luck in your new
- 28:18role. So get back to it and get over there and start to crunching

- 33:00about it. Well, Brian Hughes, our good friend, meteorologist Brian Hughes,
- 33:04is with us right now. Brian, good morning, Well, good
- 33:07morning. Are you ready for a little snow in the region. Well,
- 33:09you know, it depends. I was talking to somebody before the show,
- 33:14and it depends on which weather forecast you look at. I myself depend solely
- 33:19on storm Track or thirteen, but others, but others have said it's going
- 33:23to be a lot bigger deal for I guess, well, obviously it's going
- 33:27to be a big deal in the mountains of West Virginia. But we know
- 33:29weather advisories have been issued for several parts of the air Canall Valley as of
- 33:32now is not one of them. So what can we expect, Brian,
- 33:38Well, you know those advisories, you know, they're at the discretion of
- 33:42the National Weather Services and usually they're pretty good about that. I believe that
- 33:45we'll probably at least have a winter weather advisory this afternoon deceiving issue for canal
- 33:52parts of Clay County and maybe even back up into Roone or Calhoun Counties additionally.
- 33:58But right now winters stow morning for Nikola County and back up the Webster
- 34:01County, upper parts of Fay County, because there's gonna be a big time
- 34:04accumulating snow. Now here's what we're gonna add down here in the valley this
- 34:08afternoon. Like right now, we've got a cold brain out there, but
- 34:12as we go into this afternoon, we're talking about two to three, maybe
- 34:15four o'clock, you're gonna start to see these little spotty rain showers turn into
- 34:20snow showers and then snow squalls because we've got a gusty wind. And you
- 34:23know, if you're sitting at home and a snow squall comes by, you
- 34:27see the wind whipping around. If the snow comes down, you might get
- 34:30it just barely, a light dust, nothing too fancy. But if you're
- 34:32driving in it, it's a totally different story. If you you get that
- 34:36snowballing right into your base and you know, right up against the windshield.
- 34:38It's difficult to drive in and you do that right around oh, I don't
- 34:43know, four to six o'clock, it's gonna be havoc on the roads.
- 34:46Doesn't particularly mean we're gonna have slick roads because the road temperatures are not too
- 34:50bad right now. But it's just the people, you know how they panic
- 34:52and they wreck everywhere. Yes, that's what people do. So but but
- 34:59you know, but what we're gonna have this afternoon into the early evening hours
- 35:02or some of the snow squalls, they'll put down a light dusting. If
- 35:05you get a snow squall that runs over to the same area, you know,
- 35:07two or three of them in a row, you can get a touch
- 35:10more. But that's what we're expecting for this safternoon travel problems. It's as
- 35:15we go into the nighttime as temperatures drop. The good thing about the wind
- 35:21is that helps to dry the roads out. But still there will be slick
- 35:23spots in the morning because we're gonna have temperatures, you know, in the
- 35:27mid twenties tomorrow morning. But at snow total you know, around let's say
- 35:31Charleston, we have a chance for a dust thing to maybe an inch,
- 35:36and you know, maybe as you go on top of a mountain or two,
- 35:38you know, away from the river, you might get you know,
- 35:40an inch a half or maybe a touch more. But you know we're gonna
- 35:44be on the low end of all this Madison logan an inch to possibly two.
- 35:50You get up to Clay County in the lower elevations, closer to the
- 35:53interstate, you're gonna have you know, one to two inches a higher elevations
- 35:58through the four I think Summers ends up with about maybe two to four inches
- 36:02worth of snow. You get up to the upper parts of the county,
- 36:06maybe closer to the mountain Nebo four inches plus and then you look over to
- 36:10the rich Wood you know they could see six inches easily, possibly nearing ten.
- 36:15But you go to the very tops of parts of you know, Webster,
- 36:20Pocahontas, and also in the Randolph County, and we're talking about totals
- 36:24that could be up to a foot in a spot or two, maybe a
- 36:30touch higher. This is a been a pretty wild couple of days everywhere in
- 36:36the eastern part of the United States, Brian, as far as the weather
- 36:37goes, Oh my gosh, tornadoes in the Carolinas. We've had a significant
- 36:43flooding wind, the wind you know in the Atlantic, just causing havoc and
- 36:50it's slowed down a lot of travel, you know, flights across the country.
- 36:52So this is a big storm system. You know. The thing is,
- 36:55we've been able to see this for more than a week away, this
- 36:59one system, and we knew it was coming. It was just okay,
- 37:02could it draw the cold air in? And it is and that's going to
- 37:06allow you know, for us to see our first significant snow, especially for
- 37:09our favored ski areas and higher terrain. So that's cool that we get that
- 37:15out of the way, but you know, we don't see you know,
- 37:19we're trying to track the cold and we think we're going to have a better
- 37:22winter this year than we've had the last couple of winters. Two things,
- 37:25we've got al Nino that's relatively strong and that's going to help draw the cold
- 37:30down a little bit further south. And you get a more active pattern with
- 37:34tropical style systems coming across the Gulf, the Gulf of Mexico and lifting north
- 37:38towards this But as you look at what's going to happen, you know,
- 37:43in our neighborhoods. We're actually going to warm up. We could be at
- 37:45sixty on Christmas Day with some light sprinkles, but then by the time we
- 37:50get to the New Year's weekend, we back down into the forties, maybe
- 37:53even in the thirties, because there'll be a couple of storm systems as we
- 37:57get towards the end of the week going to the New Year's weekend and right
- 38:00there just after New Year's and that could bring us some significant snow accumulations to
- 38:05get in the mountains. What to see what happens for the lower elevation unolog
- 38:08is Brian Houston. Storm Tracker thirteen is here. I just put a rap
- 38:10on this thing, Brian, because you know, I had an old radio
- 38:14programmer when I my first couple of years in business told me, they said,
- 38:16they people don't want to know is it going to rain or is it
- 38:20going to snow. They want to know is it going to rain or snow
- 38:22on them. That's because that's all people really really care about when you think
- 38:28about it. So let's take it from drive time today. People are listening
- 38:31to us or they're you know, heading out to you know, four or
- 38:35five o'clock. This afternoon heading heading to the you know, Tays Valley or
- 38:38Elk View or wherever it is that they happen to live. Let's talk about
- 38:42that drive time and also tomorrow's drive time. Starting at about seven o'clock or
- 38:45so in the morning, what can you tell us this evening you're going to
- 38:50be running into snow showers and some snow squalls with a west wind and about
- 38:53ten to twenty some gus twenty five miles per hour. Now that will produce
- 38:59brief white out can conditions if you run in one of the snowsqualls. But
- 39:01as far as the communlations are concerned, we're just looking at maybe getting a
- 39:07dusting out of each one of those as they come by, very very lightnessing.
- 39:10But bridges and overpasses you need to watch as you're heading home link this
- 39:15afternoon, this evening, especially as you get past six o'clock and so going
- 39:19into the nighttime hours. Still like snowshowers, but especially in the mountains tomorrow,
- 39:22we have some slick spots bridges and overpasses, and a couple of spots
- 39:27where you know, you just got water that's straining off a hill and it's
- 39:30frozen up. But the one thing that you know we're good with down here
- 39:34in the valleys as such, is that it is warmer, but the snow
- 39:37is going to be up high. That snow wraps up tomorrow in the mountains
- 39:40by about the lunch shower. But in the morning we'll have flurries just about
- 39:44possible anywhere across the region. All right, well, definitely regardless, be
- 39:47careful out there, Brian, I gotta get this in with you real quick.
- 39:50You know this coming Friday, I do this thing. I started it
- 39:53a few years ago with every Friday, I do the thing i'll call Friday
- 39:57Finals. Well, start on this thing a couple of year ago with my
- 40:00good friend Mike Pushkin. I bring him in on the last show that I
- 40:04do before Christmas, and we don't talk politics or anything like that matter.
- 40:08It's forbidden to talk politics. We started calling it the Pushkin and Dave Jewish
- 40:15Christmas Spectacular. And what happens is Pushkin comes in, brings his guitar and
- 40:20he sings a couple of songs. I've also lined up Kate Boytech, lovely
- 40:23and talented singer who I've literally known since she was a baby. We're bringing
- 40:28Kate boy Tech in the studio on Friday, and I'm throwing out an invitation
- 40:30to all my regular guests on the show to stop by. And you are
- 40:36one of those, Brian Hughes. So if you get an opportunity on Friday,
- 40:39if you can break away from the office, he'd like to come down
- 40:42for a little bit, come down and hang out with us in person Friday
- 40:45morning, sometime between nine and ten. We're gonna have personalities from all the
- 40:47other stations are gonna come in. As I said, I got Pushkin and
- 40:51I've got Kate Boytech. So if you can break away, Brian, You're
- 40:55more than welcome to come join us for the Jewish Christmas Spectacular Friday morning here
- 41:00on the show and listen. If there's one thing that is for sure,
- 41:05you know, I am happy to step out of this building anytime and every
- 41:07time I get a chance, and I'm not ashamed of doing everything on the
- 41:13road except for you know, including the weather. So I'll be happy to
- 41:17drop one by. All right, Brian, We'll see you Friday. Thanks
- 41:21for all you do, man. I know for you and Spencer and the
- 41:22entire team, it's going to be a busy twenty four hour doesn't look like
- 41:24it's going to be that big of a deal for our area. But you
- 41:28know, keep watching and you guys will do great. I'm sure you always
- 41:30do. Brian will talk soon. Man, thanks a lot. Sound good?
- 41:34All right? But Dave Allen showing five eighty Live is brought to you
- 41:37partly by Hustan's Pizza. This month at your favorite Hustons gets a special holiday

- 42:00that, A big loud noe. Actually, I heard someone talking about this
- 42:04and passing the other day. I need to do a little bit more homework
- 42:07on that, and I will try to find out what I can about that
- 42:12and maybe have Center WillFull on the show to talk about Texas. People can
- 42:16say what they want about Governor Justice, but I never saw any other state
- 42:21governors recognize and honor every COVID death by reading their ages and locations over the
- 42:27pandemic. It's the big little things like that that ordinary people appreciate and respect.
- 42:32You've heard me say this about Governor Justice in the past. There will
- 42:35be those who don't like him, there will be those that will downright hate
- 42:38him, but I and those that love him. At one time he was
- 42:42ranked in the top three or four as far as approval rating goes of governors
- 42:45nationwide, and he really owned it during COVID and that texture is exactly right,
- 42:52and he continues to do these pressers. And although COVID I don't want
- 42:55to say COVID is not a thing, because I currently know about five or
- 42:58six people that have COVID right now and are suffering through it. But he
- 43:02was on his best. He was at his best during that time. Texas
- 43:06absolutely right. I'm going to get this in there before we go to break.
- 43:07You know, it's not often that all of the stations of WVRC media

- 47:42to police were shot at Martinsburg yesterday. Yeah, Jeff and I talked about
- 47:45that top of the show. When will you talk about the soft on crime
- 47:47policies of the Republican legislature and governor causing the crime wave? Or do we
- 47:53only use the silly argument when trying to own the libs? Says a Texter
- 48:00notes here people still talking about the comments made a week and a couple of
- 48:04days ago during the gubernatorial debate. Of Morgantown, moderated by Hoppy Kurtchibal the
- 48:07comments made by candidate for governor current Secretary of State Mac Warner saying that the
- 48:12twenty twenty presidential election was stolen by the CIA, Big Tech, etc.
- 48:16Etc. Last week, it was learned that Macwarner's chief of staff, Chuck
- 48:21Flannery, is resigning his position as chief of staff to Secretary Warner to take
- 48:25a role with Senator Shelley Moore Capito. Now that change effective, I understand,
- 48:30according to the press release, with the coming of the new year twenty
- 48:32twenty four, no reason to directly believe that Chuck Flannery's resignation has anything to
- 48:39do with the comments made about the election by Macwarner. You know, you
- 48:45have to understand the way that jobs work under the Capitol Dome. As somebody
- 48:49who's been there, I somewhat understand it. Chuck Flannery's Macwarner's right hand man,
- 48:54and regardless of what happens in the future, whether whether Macwarners elected governor
- 48:59not, Corner will not be Secretary of State come January twenty twenty five,
- 49:02there will be a new Secretary of State. So one of the bad things
- 49:07about being a high ranking official such as that is that every four eight years
- 49:12you find yourself looking for a job. So I would suspect that Chuck probably
- 49:16saw an opportunity and took it, which now you know, no one can
- 49:19blame him for I know all the players here very well. Chuck's a family
- 49:23guy and a father, so he has to look to the future, and
- 49:25again no one can blame him for that. I'm not so sure I would
- 49:29read too much into that. I say that because I saw some social media
- 49:32chatter over the weekend about it, and so on and so forth. I
- 49:37will say, despite being a Denver Broncos fan, Chuck's actually a pretty good
- 49:39guy. And he does have a history with Shelley Moore Capito, having worked
- 49:43for her once before. I do think, though, the coming months are
- 49:47going to be interesting, as now Chuck Flannery finds himself working for Senator Shelley
- 49:54Moore Capito, whose son is now running for governor against a g. Patrick
- 50:00Morrissey, car dealer Chris Miller and more capital So, in the words of
- 50:07John Lennon, strange days indeed was peculiar. Mama. I was writing an
- 50:15article over the weekend from The Wall Street Journal about Senator Joe Manchin Mansion speaking
- 50:22last week at the annual CEO Council Summit sponsored by the Journal, and he
- 50:30was very to his plans to run for president next year on some sort of
- 50:34a third party ticket whatever, no labels, whatever they're calling it. As
- 50:39as has been documented, Senator Mansion did say he plans to kick off the
- 50:45next chapter of his political career next month by traveling for two months with his
- 50:50words, with the hope of mobilizing people like myself who feel they are homeless
- 50:55politically homeless, in quote the words of Senator Mansion. And he was also
- 51:00asked about statements he'd made in the past. He has set on numerous occasions
- 51:04he would likely be the last Democrat to be elected to the US Senate for
- 51:08some time from West Virginia, exendy well beyond his lifetime. He's absolutely right
- 51:14about that. And he talked about in the interview how much West Virginia has
- 51:20changed. I would respectfully disagree with a portion of that with Senator Mansion.
- 51:27I don't think that West Virginia itself is or West Virginia's have changed that much.
- 51:32I think the National Democratic Party has now Manchin side of the National Democratic
- 51:37Party's hostility toward coal production being one of those factors, and again he's right
- 51:43there. If the Senator, though, is planning to run for president,
- 51:46the poll numbers from the Wall Street Journal don't look too good by more than
- 51:51a two to one margin. Voters has said they have an unfavorable pinch opinion
- 51:55of Senator Mansion, Democrats and Independence both viewing him in an unfavorable light.
- 52:01So I don't know what the future holds for Center to Management. Apparently he's
- 52:06not gonna have much luck if he runs for president. But Dave Island showing
- 52:08five any Live brought to you apart by General Hardware and number of Windfield,

- 52:20Petty, my producer again will have more hoppy will as well as a new
- 52:22scene with this tragic situation Martinsburg where two state troopers were shot. We'll have
- 52:27more on that coming up on talk Line. Coming up tomorrow on the show,
- 52:30We're gonna talkab a little bit more about this grand opening of the all
