- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Lucas, last episode we were talking about grandparents, right? Lucas: We did. We covered አያት and እናት for grandmother. But today, let's go one step closer and talk about mother and father. Luna: Oh, I like that. Family words are so useful. Let's do it. Lucas: First up, mother. The word is እናት. Listen again. እናት. Luna: እናት. That sounds beautiful. እናት. Lucas: Perfect. And father is አባት. Try it. Luna: አባት. Hmm, አባት. That's got a nice rhythm. Lucas: Right. Now, how do we ask someone if they have a mother? You can say እናት አለህ? That literally means 'Do you have a mother?' Luna: እናት አለህ? So I can ask someone about their mom like that? Lucas: Exactly. And for father, አባት አለህ? Luna: አባት አለህ? Okay, I think I've got that. Lucas: Great. Now, if you want to answer yes, you say አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. That means 'Yes, I have a mother.' Luna: አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. That's a mouthful, but I'll try. አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. Lucas: You nailed it. And for father, አዎ፣ አባት አለኝ. Luna: አዎ፣ አባት አለኝ. Yeah, I think I can remember that. Lucas: Let's practice a little conversation. Imagine you meet someone and you want to know about their family. You ask, እናት አለህ? Luna: And they say, አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. Lucas: Perfect. Let's do one more with father. Ask me, አባት አለህ? Luna: አባት አለህ? Lucas: አዎ፣ አባት አለኝ. Luna: Oh, that's great. You know, Lucas, I've been thinking about how much I enjoy learning these little phrases. It really helps me feel connected to the language. Lucas: I'm glad to hear that. And you know what I love about this show? We keep it completely ad-free. No interruptions, just pure learning. Luna: That's true. It's like a quiet corner of the internet. If you're enjoying this and want to support that, you can help us out at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: Yeah, that's it. But no pressure. Let's get back to family. So we have mother and father. How would you ask about both, like 'Do you have parents?' Luna: Hmm, maybe እናት እና አባት አለህ? I'm guessing. Lucas: That's a great guess, and actually you can say that. But let's keep it simple for now. Just focus on the two separate questions. Luna: Okay. So እናት አለህ? and አባት አለህ? Lucas: Yes. And remember, the answer with አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ or አዎ፣ አባት አለኝ. Luna: Let me try a full sentence. እናት አለህ? አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. Lucas: Beautiful. You're making this look easy. Luna: I'm trying. It's fun. Lucas: Let's do a quick review. I'll say the English, you say the Amharic. Mother. Luna: እናት. Lucas: Father. Luna: አባት. Lucas: Do you have a mother? Luna: እናት አለህ? Lucas: Do you have a father? Luna: አባት አለህ? Lucas: Yes, I have a mother. Luna: አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. Lucas: Yes, I have a father. Luna: አዎ፣ አባት አለኝ. Lucas: Perfect. You've got it. Luna: This is so helpful. I can imagine asking my Ethiopian friends about their families now. Lucas: Exactly. And they'll appreciate you asking. It's a warm way to connect. Luna: Before we go, let's do one more round. I want to make sure these stick. Lucas: Sure. I'll ask, you answer. እናት አለህ? Luna: አዎ፣ እናት አለኝ. Lucas: አባት አለህ? Luna: አዎ፣ አባት አለኝ. Lucas: Wonderful. See how natural that feels? Luna: It does. I'm proud of myself. Lucas: You should be. That's the end of our lesson for today. Remember to practice these phrases. Thanks for joining us on Learn Amharic with Fexingo. See you next time. Luna: Bye, everyone. Keep practicing.
