- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today.
- 0:18I got to be honest with you guys.
- 0:19This is a little bit of a selfish episode and you might
- 0:23say what in the world do you mean a selfish episode Today in
- 0:28these verses, which is first Timothy 4 verses 11 through 16,
- 0:34we're going to be looking at the mission of a pastor.
- 0:38So the mission of a pastor as Paul a a pastor at various times
- 0:45throughout his ministry himself as well as a church planter and
- 0:49an apostle, one that had authority given to him from
- 0:54Jesus over all of the churches as a result of his teaching that
- 0:59he heard from Christ and from the other apostles.
- 1:04Paul tells Timothy, while you are pastoring, they are in the
- 1:08church at Ephesus. Here's what you need to be
- 1:12doing. Here's what you need to be
- 1:13learning. Here's the mindset that you need
- 1:16to have and here's how your interactions with the other
- 1:20believers there in the church at Ephesus.
- 1:22Here's how that should be. So this, these truths are the
- 1:28same types of things that go for every believer.
- 1:31So if you're like, oh man, I'm not a pastor is is this episode
- 1:36going to do anything for me? Absolutely.
- 1:39There is nothing that I do as a pastor that is materially
- 1:43different from what every single Christian believer ought to be
- 1:47doing in some realm of their life.
- 1:50I, I mention it when we were in chapter 3, a pastor over the
- 1:55entire church does what he does in his home.
- 1:59So if you will, he, he shepherds his home and then he shepherds
- 2:03the church at large. And actually the training at
- 2:06home trains him for what he does within the church.
- 2:10And like what I do in telling other people about the gospel or
- 2:15about Scripture, what I do in helping to like pray, work with
- 2:23people and trying to help them, you know, disciple them towards
- 2:26Christ likeness, all of that, all of those things are things
- 2:31that every single one of us as Christians should be doing.
- 2:35And very unfortunately, many of us just totally abdicate any
- 2:39spiritual responsibility off to pastors or paid individuals.
- 2:46And we say, OK, well, they will be the spiritual ones and
- 2:50they'll do all the spiritual stuff.
- 2:51And maybe I'll bankroll, you know, the church a little bit
- 2:55and, and that'll be fine. I'll attend sometimes and, and
- 2:59that'll do it. No, my friend, each one of us
- 3:01have been called to be a priest in Christ priesthood.
- 3:06And that involves things that we'll see today.
- 3:08But the most direct application of this passage is that Paul is
- 3:12saying to Timothy, here's what you need to be doing as a
- 3:15pastor. So if you have a pastor be
- 3:19listening be be praying for your pastor is he's seeking to do
- 3:22these things. If you find as you're listening
- 3:25through man, I I don't really know that my pastor is able to
- 3:29be doing some of this stuff because he has this or this or
- 3:33that on his plate. I maybe God might be moving in
- 3:37your heart that you would be able to take some things off of
- 3:41his plate that aren't these things that you might be like
- 3:44those initial deacons that we read about in Acts 6 that were
- 3:49able to free up the apostles to be able to dedicate themselves
- 3:53to prayer and the ministry of the Word.
- 3:57So just be listening through. Be sensitive to however God
- 4:01would use you even today. Let's read through command and
- 4:05teach these things. So that's everything we've been
- 4:08looking about, about warning against false teachers not
- 4:12getting involved in in pointless arguments or myths about not
- 4:18listening to people that have as like emphatic rules, things that
- 4:22God has not said. And instead like give yourself
- 4:25to godliness to exhibiting Christ characteristics in your
- 4:28life. He says command and teach these
- 4:30things. Don't let anyone despise your
- 4:33youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in
- 4:38conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.
- 4:42Until I come, give your attention to public reading,
- 4:45exhortation and teaching. Don't neglect the gift that is
- 4:49in you. It was given to you through the
- 4:52through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the Council of
- 4:55Elders. Practice these things, be
- 4:58committed to them so that your progress may be evident to all
- 5:03ay close attention to your life and your teaching.
- 5:05Persevere in these things, for in doing this, you will save
- 5:09both yourself and your hearers. I love these verses.
- 5:15Let's look first at verse #12 if you want a little more detailed
- 5:21talk on verse 12 that I'm going to give today, you can look back
- 5:24at the verse of the day that I did from First Timothy 412.
- 5:29You can visit tbces.sex.com/one Dash Timothy.
- 5:36So that's our church website, tbces.sex.com/andthenone Dash
- 5:41Timothy, and you can find that episode there.
- 5:44I've also linked it in the show notes as well.
- 5:47He says don't let anyone despise your youth.
- 5:51I identify with this big time. Timothy was a younger pastor.
- 5:54I'm a younger pastor. And he says, Timothy, your youth
- 5:58could be a distraction from the ministry.
- 6:02Don't let anyone look down on you as a result of the fact that
- 6:06you are young, he says. Your ability to pastor, to
- 6:11preach, to teach, to lead is not as a result of like human
- 6:16experience. It is as a result of the fact
- 6:20that you have been commissioned by Christ and by his people.
- 6:26He mentions there in verse #14 that there were elders and
- 6:30apostles that said, yes, we recognize that Timothy has been
- 6:36set apart by the Holy Spirit for this purpose.
- 6:40This is what he's supposed to be doing.
- 6:42And we can see the evidence of that both in his his life, his
- 6:46behavior, his character, and in his teaching.
- 6:52And so we believe in him. And so we are placing him in
- 6:55this position for myself, whether it's, you know, the the
- 7:02pulpit search committee that brought me here, the
- 7:04congregation at large of Tabernacle that voted me in, my
- 7:08elders here at the church, my elders, my pastors back in
- 7:14Washington, the pastors I at my Bible College in California, and
- 7:21even my my pastor in, in Colorado that have all said at
- 7:26various points throughout my life, yes, we believe that Brian
- 7:29has been set aside for the gospel ministry by the Holy
- 7:33Spirit. And so even though at the time
- 7:36this episode drops, I am one day away.
- 7:40When this episode drops on March 11th, I am one day away from
- 7:45turning 29 years old, though I am only 29, the youngest male
- 7:51member at Tabernacle Baptist Church.
- 7:55God has set me here for a purpose, and it's for the
- 8:00purpose of pastoring, of shepherding, of guiding and
- 8:04leading, encouraging, feeding God's people.
- 8:07And so I have a command here from God's Word.
- 8:12Don't let people look down on me just because I'm young.
- 8:16Most months that go by, I, I often get the comments as people
- 8:24hear about what my age is. They go, man, you're a baby
- 8:28because very often it's, you know, I, I'm the same age as
- 8:32someone's grandkids or sometimes, you know, they're,
- 8:36they're great grandkids or something.
- 8:37I get, Oh man, you're just a baby.
- 8:40And though I, I understand why people make those comments, I
- 8:44want to make sure that the, the way that I live my life, the way
- 8:47that I talk, that I am able to be a respectful and respectable
- 8:54person. I know that I can be energetic.
- 8:58I, I can be jovial. I hope that comes through even
- 9:01on the podcast as you guys have been listening.
- 9:05But I want to do everything that I do in recognition of the fact
- 9:09that I've been given a mission by God.
- 9:11And so I should not allow anyone to despise my youth.
- 9:15But I need to set an example. If I was flippant, if I'm crass,
- 9:24if I am lazy, that would not be something that then I could tell
- 9:28other people, hey, I know I'm young, but you know, here's some
- 9:34good things or here's the way in which I do conduct my life here,
- 9:39He says if you want people to not despise your youth, set an
- 9:42example. There are plenty of young people
- 9:46that do boneheaded things that are ungodly.
- 9:50That if everyone in a church behaved like those young people
- 9:54behave, the the church would be instantly running to the ground.
- 9:59I want to be an exemplary Christian in the way that I live
- 10:03my life here among the people of Tabernacle.
- 10:06That if everyone at Tabernacle talked like me, submitted like
- 10:12me, evangelized like me, gave like me.
- 10:17My prayer is that our church would be in good shape if
- 10:21everyone at church was like me. Can I ask you, if everyone at
- 10:25your church was like you, what state would your church be in?
- 10:30Can I encourage you? Hear the instruction goes out to
- 10:33you as well. Don't let anyone despise either
- 10:36your, your youth, your old age. Don't let anyone despise if you
- 10:40will, don't let anyone despise your gender, but be but set an
- 10:45example. Be an example to other people of
- 10:48what you wish that the entire church was.
- 10:51And here Paul gives the specific examples of what Timothy should
- 10:54be an example for the believers in.
- 10:57He says be an example. Set an example for the believers
- 11:00in speech in the way that you talk, your vocabulary, your
- 11:03language, the appropriateness with which you're talking with
- 11:09other people. Like be appropriate in your
- 11:12speech. Be kind to other people in your
- 11:15speech. Don't be a gossip, don't be a
- 11:17slanderer. Don't be cruel or biting,
- 11:21constantly dragging down other people through your words like
- 11:24be excited. Have good things that you want
- 11:26to talk about, whether it's from the word things in life or
- 11:31politics or sports that you love that you want to see more of.
- 11:35Speak more of what you love in the world rather than all the
- 11:40things that you hate. That's something, frankly, as I
- 11:44record lots of Tabernacle talks that I need to constantly be
- 11:47guarding myself in. Is am I putting more emphasis
- 11:52on, like, what is good and what we ought to exemplify, or am I
- 11:56just spending a bunch of my time going, well, I don't like this
- 11:58and I don't like that because it can be very easy to fall into
- 12:02that trap. But I need to set an example for
- 12:05others in the way that I talk, he says.
- 12:08Set an example for the believers in speech and conduct.
- 12:11That's the way that I behave. A lot of pastors have conducted
- 12:16themselves in phenomenally bad ways.
- 12:18And my prayer would be that I'm not ever be one of those people
- 12:23that if everyone treated women the way that I treat women,
- 12:27yeah, we would be in great shape as a congregation.
- 12:30If everyone interacted with money or finances in the way
- 12:35that I interact with money and finances, yes.
- 12:37Like, homes would be good. You know, there wouldn't be
- 12:41gambling. There would be trustworthiness
- 12:44and openness, transparency and honesty in in the way that all
- 12:48of that happens. May we conduct ourselves well,
- 12:51he says. In love, be an example of what
- 12:55it looks like to love other people.
- 12:57And I, I hope that I do this. This is my prayer.
- 13:00This is what I want to happen. Like whether or not someone
- 13:04particularly cares for me or not, I want them to know that I
- 13:08love them deeply from the heart. That's not a front.
- 13:12It's Jesus has loved me and Jesus loves you.
- 13:16And therefore because I love him, I love you.
- 13:19And I can see the image of God in you.
- 13:22I can see the things that you have that are like God.
- 13:25Maybe you are detailed like my God is detailed.
- 13:29Maybe you have a love for other people, or you have a love for
- 13:34generosity or care for the poor. You have a love for music or
- 13:39whatever it might be. I want to see the good in you
- 13:42that reflects my God, and I want to love that in you.
- 13:48So he says, set an example in speech, in conduct, in love.
- 13:52He says, in faith, my belief in what God can do.
- 13:56I don't want to be someone that's like, oh, man, well, I
- 13:59guess I've been here for 2 1/2 years and the church hasn't
- 14:02doubled in size. And so I don't know that this is
- 14:06all worth it. And we're probably just going to
- 14:08go into the ground in 15 in the 20 years.
- 14:11No, I want to have bold faith that says I believe that God can
- 14:15move in his people, that God can move in this next generation,
- 14:19That God can move in this neighborhood in Middlesex or
- 14:23that God can move in in my neighborhood in Essex or over in
- 14:27Middle River or in Bullies Quarters or in 1000 different
- 14:30places that our church family is from and where they live and
- 14:34where they go to work. I believe that God can do
- 14:36incredible things. And so I want to believe and I
- 14:41want to have faith and I want to set the example for other people
- 14:43that other people can go, yeah, I, I believe that God can work
- 14:46because, well, I, I don't, you know, maybe see all the details
- 14:50yet, But Brian is full of faith. He believes that God can do it.
- 14:53And so I believe that God can do it too.
- 14:54That would be an amazing thing. And I want to have that kind of
- 14:58prayer and faith. It says and in purity, a, a
- 15:02sincerity in the way that I live and that I talk.
- 15:07I, I've had man over the past seven years or so since I, yeah,
- 15:15it's seven years since I graduated from, from Bible
- 15:20college that I've seen, unfortunately, several people
- 15:25that I attended Bible college with that have ended up with
- 15:30broken marriages, some that have even ended up in prison because
- 15:34they did not have a care for the purity, the sincerity of their
- 15:39mission. And so I want to encourage you,
- 15:42like you and your, you and your sincerity, your, your purity.
- 15:50I, I know that many times people equate purity with strictly
- 15:54sexual purity or sexual immorality, which that's totally
- 15:58fair. Be sexually pure.
- 16:00That's something that we ought to pursue as the people of God
- 16:03that we, if we're married, we give ourselves entirely and only
- 16:09to our spouse that we're married to.
- 16:11And we, if we are not yet married, we reserve that action
- 16:17and that intimacy for our marriage.
- 16:20That ought to be something that we pursue.
- 16:22But your purity in all areas of life, like don't allow this
- 16:26world to pollute you, that you become a bitter person, you
- 16:29become an unforgiving person. You become cynical.
- 16:33Like just have a sincerity, a a simpleness of your life that
- 16:39it's you, it's God, it's the Word, it is Christ's body, the
- 16:45church that you are a part of and that you are just sincere in
- 16:49the way that you interact with others.
- 16:52He says in verse 13, until I come, give your attention to
- 16:55public reading, exhortation, and teaching.
- 16:59So these are the big things. And here even as I read verse
- 17:03#13 knowing this comes from, I guess, Paul, but from the Holy
- 17:06Spirit that he says, until I come, I think about until Jesus
- 17:09comes, here's the main things that I need to be focusing on as
- 17:13a pastor as I'm trying to live this good life that I'm supposed
- 17:16to. He says, give your attention to
- 17:20public reading. That's the word of God, that we
- 17:22ought to read the word of God together.
- 17:25He says exhortation. That's encouraging other people,
- 17:28encouraging them to good works, encouraging them to faithfulness
- 17:31in Christ, encouraging them to unity with other brothers and
- 17:35sisters in the Lord. I view that as a really
- 17:37important part of what I do. So the the word, the formal
- 17:41preaching of the word of God and also reading the word of God to
- 17:45people. That's a huge part of why I do
- 17:48Tabernacle talk is not because I'm just like, oh, I have
- 17:53nothing to do with my time. I guess I'll record a weekday
- 17:56podcast. No, it's because I firmly
- 17:59believe that as I publicly read the word and walk through it
- 18:03with you guys each and every weekday, I believe that I'm
- 18:07fulfilling part of this mission. So public reading, exhortation,
- 18:11encouraging people that's someone on one ministry and
- 18:15teaching. And so I love, I love teaching.
- 18:18Right now I'm walking through the book of job with a group on
- 18:23Sunday nights at 5:30 PM and I have that study is on the
- 18:28Tabernacle Baptist Essex Sermon Podcast.
- 18:31So that's Tabernacle Baptist Essex Sermon podcast and you can
- 18:36look that up. I'm walking through that.
- 18:39I love that time of just getting to teach through Scripture.
- 18:42It's, it's a lot like what I'm doing right now, but there's
- 18:45actual people there and not just this phone camera that I'm
- 18:50talking to at the Tabernacle talk.
- 18:52And so I love that. But I want to give myself to
- 18:55these things. I could do lots of different
- 18:57things with my life, but here, this is what Scripture commands
- 19:01for me to do. And I want to encourage you be
- 19:03reading through the Word of God, be encouraging, exhorting other
- 19:06people and be learning the word of God so you can teach whether
- 19:10it's your spouse, your kids, your neighbor, someone else
- 19:15within the church, maybe that's newer to their faith.
- 19:19These are all things that you can do as well.
- 19:22He says. This is what you need to give
- 19:24your attention to. He says don't neglect the gift
- 19:28that is in you. It was given to you through
- 19:30prophecy. It's the declaring over this
- 19:33person of what others see in you that God has given you.
- 19:37He says it was given to you through prophecy with the laying
- 19:41on of hands by the council of elders.
- 19:44This would be the older word, Presbyterian.
- 19:46So when you hear Presbyterian, it would come from this kind of
- 19:49thought of a council of elders from a local church that all lay
- 19:54hands on someone. You might have heard before of
- 19:57like an ordination council. It's that same type of thought
- 20:01that a group of godly pastors, elders.
- 20:05They, they lay hands on a person.
- 20:06They say, we see that God has set you aside for the gospel
- 20:09ministry. And so they commissioned them to
- 20:11that work. So like I mentioned in chapter 1
- 20:15Timothy, you didn't start this thing like you didn't go to
- 20:19Ephesus. You didn't become a pastor out
- 20:22of your own volition like other people saw this in you and they
- 20:26commissioned you to this work. And so don't neglect your, your
- 20:29gift of teaching, of preaching, of pastoring.
- 20:33That is something that God has given to you that others have
- 20:36seen and affirmed. And so stand strong in that.
- 20:39And I got to tell you guys, I need that encouragement
- 20:43constantly from the Lord to say, you know, I, I get to see many
- 20:49wonderful pastors and preachers in our area and all across the
- 20:54nation as a result of social media.
- 20:57And sometimes I can be like, man, if only so and so was the
- 21:00pastor here, I bet Tabernacle would be like 10 steps beyond
- 21:04where I am with it. But the truth is that God hasn't
- 21:07given Tabernacle other pastors or elders than the ones that we
- 21:12have. He, he's given them me.
- 21:14He's given them Ron and Myron and Jim and Owen.
- 21:16And so God wants for this church what these pastors have, and all
- 21:22of us have been affirmed by the congregation and by the existing
- 21:27like elders, pastors, leaders at the church to say, yes, we have
- 21:31seen in you what God is doing. We know that the Holy Spirit is
- 21:35at work in you. And so we believe in you and the
- 21:39mission that God has for you. And like I told you guys before,
- 21:43wherever God has you, he has you there for a purpose.
- 21:47And so live out your life. Don't neglect the gift that God
- 21:51has given you in whatever place he's placed you, whether that's
- 21:54in your family, in your neighborhood, in your workplace,
- 21:57like use that for the glory of God.
- 22:00Verse 15, He says, practice these things, be committed to
- 22:03them so that your progress may be evident to all.
- 22:07My hope is in four years and five years that people at
- 22:12Tabernacle would be like, man, Brian is not the same person
- 22:16that he was four or five years ago.
- 22:18Like God has been doing an amazing work in him
- 22:22transparently, because I'm almost at the end of the episode
- 22:25now. Even my wife saying from time to
- 22:30time, like I know you're not perfect, but I have seen like
- 22:35great progress in you, even from you know, when we left
- 22:40Washington and when we came here like it's so cool seeing what
- 22:44God is doing in you. And that means the world to me
- 22:48to hear that from her. I want to, I, I know I'm never
- 22:51going to be perfect, but I want to make progress and you can
- 22:54make progress in your Christian faith that it, it won't be in
- 22:58five years, you know, you become Sister Teresa or oh, sorry, it's
- 23:03Mother Teresa. We, we, those of you that are at
- 23:07Tabernacle know we, we do have Sister Teresa with the purple
- 23:10hair. You won't be Mother Teresa in
- 23:13five years. And, and just this bastion of,
- 23:16of great care for the needy and, you know, so holy and, and
- 23:21perfect in, in so many things that that won't often be the way
- 23:27that we find ourselves to be just this perfect, ideal person.
- 23:33But we can have progress that we can be different than we used to
- 23:38be as a result of the Holy Spirit living in us.
- 23:42But that takes a commitment every day to go.
- 23:44I'm not going to be the person today that I was yesterday.
- 23:47Yesterday I snapped at my spouse.
- 23:49Today. I'm not going to snap at my
- 23:50spouse Yesterday. I flipped that person off when
- 23:53they cut me off in traffic. Today.
- 23:54I'm not going to flip off anyone that cuts me off in traffic.
- 23:58I used to complain about this or that.
- 24:01Now today I'm not going to complain about that.
- 24:06Have an intention to say I'm I'm going to practice.
- 24:08I'm going to train so that I'm no longer the person that I used
- 24:11to be. Verse #16 Pay close attention to
- 24:14your life and your teaching. Persevere in these things, for
- 24:19in doing this you will save both yourself and your hears.
- 24:23My primary ministry as a pastor, your primary ministry is to
- 24:29yourself that you would, if you will be you be your first pastor
- 24:37that you care about your walk with God.
- 24:40You care about where you're at spiritually because when you
- 24:43care for your spiritual state and when you care about your
- 24:46teaching, about what you are learning and knowing and
- 24:49understanding from the Word of God, when you care about that,
- 24:52you both like protect, safeguard, save your soul and
- 24:57you hope to protect those around you.
- 25:01So I'm a pastor. If I fail in my walk, it will
- 25:05damage a whole bunch of people in my radius, primarily Samantha
- 25:09and Bee and EV, but then all the rest of my Tabernacle family as
- 25:13well, as well as many of my friends in the ministry and
- 25:18those that aren't in the ministry.
- 25:19And I don't want to do that to them.
- 25:21And so my most important ministry is to Brian, that my
- 25:25soul is OK. Because if my soul is OK and I
- 25:30am like learning and teaching good doctrine, like faithful
- 25:35things in accordance with the gospel, then a good life and
- 25:39good doctrine that will minister to me, my soul will flourish and
- 25:45the souls of those around will flourish.
- 25:47That your walk with God doesn't just affect you.
- 25:50Your walk with God affects your family and those around you.
- 25:54So pay pay careful attention to that.
- 25:57Again, there's been a little bit longer episode.
- 25:59This is what you get when it's something Brian is super, super
- 26:02passionate about. So take that.
- 26:06Love you guys very much. And I thank you for being a part
- 26:08of Tabernacle Talk. Tomorrow we start chapter #5
- 26:12tomorrow is my birthday. So looking forward to that and
- 26:17what should the church support? And we're looking at widows
- 26:22financial programs of the church, which the New Testament
- 26:24doesn't talk a lot about, but next episode does talk about.
- 26:27Looking forward to that with you.
- 26:28Have a wonderful day.
