- 0:00Hi Mary Connor welcome back. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:03network wherever you're listening in the state of I
- 0:04would glad that you are bottom of the hour.
- 0:07We'll speak with Vinny I recovers the NFL for the
- 0:10Sporting News sportingnews.com for Vinny Trent will make some
- 0:14pics circus sports sponsor those that's coming up about oh 10
- 0:17minutes or so before 2O clock. But we start our number 2 and
- 0:21before we go to break in our number 2, just by the way, we've
- 0:23been talking about those hams, those Thanksgiving hams.
- 0:26Trent Guy, Bruce Lambert from 4hams.com is going to jump on
- 0:30for just a couple of minutes because there are deadlines if
- 0:33you want one delivered to your home in time for Thanksgiving.
- 0:36So Bruce coming up here in about 15 minutes.
- 0:39But right now, Matt Postons, he covers the Big 12 for Heartland
- 0:42College Sports, Heartland College sports.com, and he joins
- 0:45the program. Hello Matt Postons, how are you?
- 0:49I'm good and I'm excited that I am the lead in for him.
- 0:51How about that? You know, you know, I you, you,
- 0:55you worked last night. Call it that.
- 0:57I I love that description of watching sports as I do.
- 1:01At least my wife's convinced that that's what I'm doing.
- 1:04You watched Iowa State and Mississippi State, so let's
- 1:06start there. I thought, you know, just
- 1:08personally, I thought, wow, this can be a hell of a fight because
- 1:10both teams came out just slugging each other defensively
- 1:13and then Iowa State pulled away and it's their senior guard and
- 1:17Trent and I spent some time on this just, you know, hoping he
- 1:21gets the best of health in his senior year because if tame and
- 1:25lips he can stay healthy. What a difference he makes.
- 1:28How he was so good last night. Your thoughts on TJ squad?
- 1:32Yeah, he lips, he had a great game.
- 1:34And I think that's really that's a nice confidence boost for the
- 1:38entire group because of the, you know, he had the offseason
- 1:41issues from a health standpoint. He didn't get cleared until
- 1:44right before the opener. So you're you're kind of
- 1:46wondering, well, how quickly is it going to take him to get, you
- 1:49know, ramped up and ready to go? And he looked like he was ready
- 1:51for Big 12 play last night. I mean, he was fantastic, but
- 1:55you know, the star of that show is the defense.
- 1:57You force 26 turnovers, you do that every game, you're gonna
- 2:01win practically every game. And that's what Iowa State's
- 2:03defense has always been geared to do.
- 2:05I, I thought they did a fantastic job of just kind of
- 2:08squeezing the vice throughout the game and just making things
- 2:12harder and harder for Mississippi State.
- 2:14And you know it. There's a typical Iowa State
- 2:17game and, and they needed a, they needed a good test, a high
- 2:21major test to kind of show everybody in college basketball
- 2:24that they're the same team they were a year ago.
- 2:26Not everybody played high major games last week.
- 2:29Obviously Arizona, BYU did, Kansas did, Oklahoma State did,
- 2:34but they needed a win like that against a team that went to the
- 2:38NCAA tournament last year and lost to Baylor in the first
- 2:41round. So a solid win for them.
- 2:43They played great, but I think the big take away is how well
- 2:45lips he played in that game. A career high 25 points, 6
- 2:49assists, 3 steals. They only turned the ball over 9
- 2:52times. That's a big deal when you're
- 2:54talking about turnover differential.
- 2:56When you can force 26 and turn that into 29 points and only
- 2:59give out the ball 9 times you you got a pretty solid recipe to
- 3:02win a lot of games. Matt one of the surprises of the
- 3:05first week of the season, I think in the Big 12, it's just
- 3:07been Houston hasn't hit the ground running.
- 3:09I mean, they were struggling with Townsend deep into the
- 3:12second-half of that one. Lehigh they couldn't get much
- 3:14separation. I mean, not exactly the who's
- 3:17who of college basketball. We'll see him Sunday against
- 3:19Auburn and definitely a no look team but I just figured with
- 3:23Yuzon and Toddler coming back in and sharpen along with the news
- 3:27comers, they were just going to be dominating right from the get
- 3:29go. Hasn't been the case any concern
- 3:31at all with the Cougars. I honestly don't.
- 3:34I mean, the three guys you mentioned right there, that's
- 3:36their core. All three of those guys played
- 3:38on the national finalist team last year.
- 3:41They've all improved. I think Tugler has the chance to
- 3:45make a a Juwan Roberts type of improvement from year to year
- 3:48now that he's going to be the number one guy inside.
- 3:51But you know, they held on to a lot of young guys.
- 3:54You know, they had a really good freshman class last year.
- 3:57None of them hit the portal. They all stayed.
- 3:59They have a tremendous freshman class this year.
- 4:01You know, it looks like Kelvin Stanton has committed to to
- 4:05starting Chris Cenac and giving him run there.
- 4:08There's going to be, I think they're going to have little
- 4:11dips and valleys kind of like they had two years ago early in
- 4:13non conference. But I think once they get into
- 4:16conference play, knowing Kelvin, you know, they're they're going
- 4:19to have their rotations down. Their freshmen are going to be
- 4:22in very defined roles and should be in very good shape.
- 4:25He's admitted this is a different team than a year ago
- 4:28and he's treating it like a much different team.
- 4:30But the the fundamentals of what they do right are still there.
- 4:33They're a defense first team. They're going to play very much
- 4:361/2 court game. They're going to look to grind
- 4:38you out because all those guys committed to playing the type of
- 4:41defense they like to play. I'm really not that worried
- 4:44about that. I know there was a lot of talk
- 4:46on social media when they moved up to #1 on Monday.
- 4:48They probably should have been number one in the first place,
- 4:52to be honest with you, even with all the newcomers they had.
- 4:55But now I'm not worried. I'm really not this.
- 4:58This team is built for the long haul.
- 5:00And when you're built for the long haul, you're not
- 5:02necessarily going to look like a a great team right out of the
- 5:05gate. One of the stories I think of
- 5:08this conference just going to be the elite freshman talent,
- 5:11Peterson from K, You saw them against North Carolina.
- 5:13What it did till the two halves that game was was that Friday,
- 5:16whatever night it was obviously Pete with Arizona, Debansa with
- 5:22BYU you mentioned seen active at the big at at Houston.
- 5:26There is an incredibly I really like tour 8 Iowa State.
- 5:31There's some incredibly talented freshmen as there always are.
- 5:34But it just seems that this group is off to a terrific start
- 5:37as we as the Big 12 Conference play gets underway, but the
- 5:40season overall gets underway. No, there's a bumper crop in
- 5:44this conference this year of high level guys who have, you
- 5:47know, bought into the idea of playing high level college
- 5:50basketball at least for a year. Many of these guys could be 1
- 5:53and done guys. Certainly Peterson appears to be
- 5:56that kind of player, but I think Pete kind of made it look like
- 5:59he might be that type of player this year too.
- 6:01But you know, there's a half dozen 8 freshmen that are going
- 6:04to make immediate impacts once you get into Big 12 play.
- 6:06And the fact that you see Pete and the bounced and Peterson
- 6:10playing well so early and and got a great freshman who's
- 6:14played well too, you know, the fact that they're playing well,
- 6:17right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's really
- 6:19good. Yeah, he's really good too.
- 6:21He had a great game against Washington.
- 6:24The fact that they're playing so well right now and that they've
- 6:26become so integrated in what their what their teams are
- 6:28already doing, it really bodes well for where they can be once
- 6:32they get the conference play. Because you know, last year,
- 6:34when you think about Igor Demen, really good player, but he just,
- 6:37he wasn't quite ready for high major basketball in certain
- 6:41places, especially with the shooting as a tremendous passer.
- 6:44But he just wasn't, you know, where he needed to be from a
- 6:46ball handling and a shooting standpoint.
- 6:48These guys are all ready. And you, you're saw it this past
- 6:52week. If you watched enough games, you
- 6:54saw how ready these guys are to make a contribution, to make an
- 6:57impact. Yeah, it's it's it's really.
- 7:00This is the best freshman class I can remember in quite.
- 7:02Some time. How about that?
- 7:04So we go over to football with you, Matt, and with it, Texas
- 7:09Tech already 9 and one inside track to that conference
- 7:13championship game. They wrap up at home against
- 7:15UUCF and then at West Virginia. We'll see about West Virginia at
- 7:19the end. We know tricky things can happen
- 7:21up there at the end of the season, but it looks like cruise
- 7:24control from here. 11 and one conference championship game.
- 7:30Do you feel they're a lot to be in the College Football Playoff
- 7:33regardless of what happens in Arlington?
- 7:35Or still more hay to get in the barn.
- 7:39If they're 11 and 1 going into the title game, they're a lot.
- 7:42Regardless of what happens, you got to think about the playoff
- 7:46field from last year. Every team that made it had
- 7:51every power conference team that made it had at least 10 or more
- 7:54wins going into championship weekend.
- 7:57Going into the selection show, one team got left out, that was
- 8:00Miami. There were ten and two.
- 8:02So if you have ten wins going into conference championship
- 8:05weekend, regardless of whether you are in the championship game
- 8:08or not, you have a chance to be considered.
- 8:11You have a right to be considered.
- 8:12So if Tech is 11 and one and let's just say Baylor or I'm
- 8:15sorry, BYU is 11 and one, for instance, or Cincinnati is 11
- 8:18and one because they have to play each other in a couple
- 8:20weeks. If those are the two teams
- 8:22playing in the in the in the Big 12 title game, they're both 11
- 8:26and one. Both have legitimate chances to
- 8:28make the playoffs regardless of what happened in that game.
- 8:30This isn't going to be like TCU and Kansas State where, you
- 8:33know, TCU was probably going to go regardless in Kansas State
- 8:37was not going to get in even if they won the title game.
- 8:40This is a totally different situation.
- 8:41So for me, you know their tech as a lock at their 11 and one
- 8:45and they're playing in Arlington.
- 8:46The fun thing right now is with three weeks left, there's only
- 8:50one team in the country right now with 10 or more wins in a
- 8:52power conference and that's Indiana.
- 8:56But that's sinking for a minute. It's November 11th, and the only
- 9:00team in the country with 10 or more wins of Indiana, there's a
- 9:03distinct possibility that we might have fewer than 11 power
- 9:08conference teams with 10 or more wins, which opens the door, I
- 9:12think, for more SEC teams to get in because they just seem to be
- 9:16pummeling one another. And I could see a lot of those
- 9:18teams being nine and three and, you know, thinking they're on
- 9:21the outside looking in. But if you have fewer than 11
- 9:24power conference teams that had 10 or more wins, a couple of
- 9:27those teams are going to slip in.
- 9:29You know, you just mentioned an incredibly important game.
- 9:32Assuming everything goes to play this week, Cincinnati and BYU
- 9:36when the schedule came out, did anyone circle this on the
- 9:38penultimate week at the regulars?
- 9:40Well, there's a must win. There's a must watch game.
- 9:43This is a big, big spot for both of those schools.
- 9:45And very few people that other than their fan bases that, you
- 9:49know, they cover the sport from a far type of thing, thought,
- 9:52well, this game is going to have something to do with whoever
- 9:54gets to the championship game. And it's going to in all
- 9:57likelihood. It's going to be a huge game
- 10:01ascending. Both teams win this weekend
- 10:02because, you know, BYU obviously hasn't played in a conference
- 10:06championship game since they've been in the Big 12.
- 10:09I'm not even sure they played in the conference championship game
- 10:11when they were in the Mountain West that I'd have to look that
- 10:13up to be sure. Cincinnati last played in a
- 10:15conference championship game in 2021 when they were playing in
- 10:19the American that winner defeated and then Sauce Gardner
- 10:24and they got launched into the CFP that the only Group of Five
- 10:27school to make it into the CFP in the old format.
- 10:29So, yeah, I I'll be honest with you, in July, at this time of
- 10:33the year, I thought that BYU might be contending.
- 10:36And this was before Jake Retzloff and all the other stuff
- 10:39quarterback happened. And I thought Cincinnati would
- 10:41be looking for a new head coach, honestly.
- 10:43Well, they might be because he's going to have options, yeah.
- 10:47Yeah. So the fact, the fact that we're
- 10:49talking about this game potentially being the game that
- 10:52decides who Tech, most likely Texas Tech, plays in the Big 12
- 10:56championship game, it's kind of jarring, to be honest with you.
- 10:59And that game is in Cincinnati. Yeah, Speaking of jarring, it's
- 11:04crazy. And it's crazy.
- 11:06We gave Matt Campbell's group no shot going to take on TCU.
- 11:10I mean, the the secondary just absolutely decimated, banged up
- 11:15up front. Obviously TCU could throw the
- 11:18ball around. Hoover's a terrific quarterback.
- 11:21And yet somehow, someway, the Campbell seemingly does it every
- 11:24year when it seems like you don't get out, the spade gets
- 11:26ready to throw some dirt on this cyclone group.
- 11:29He did it again. I have no idea how other than
- 11:31the fact that's a, you know, you come to expect one of these a
- 11:35year. Maybe this was it gave him no
- 11:37chance and they somehow prevailed.
- 11:38Matt. Yeah.
- 11:41And we're at the time of the year now where these teams that
- 11:43are seemingly out of the race. And if you if you have three or
- 11:46more losses right now, you're you're basically out of the
- 11:49conference title game race unless something just insane
- 11:52happens that the next three weeks with the teams above them.
- 11:54So we're at that time of the year where I don't think the
- 11:58records matter nearly as much as they do.
- 12:01Maybe a few weeks ago, you're going to have games like that,
- 12:06you know, West Virginia going to Houston, to Houston.
- 12:08What in the world? What in the world?
- 12:11What in the heck? I mean, Houston would be right
- 12:13there if not for that loss. I mean, they still have the
- 12:15tiebreaker lost to Texas Tech, but they would be, we'd be
- 12:18talking about them this week too if they hadn't lost that game.
- 12:21Weird things happen in November. Like you talked about Texas Tech
- 12:24having to go to West Virginia. Texas Tech should win that game,
- 12:27but it's West Virginia and it's November and you just never know
- 12:30what you're going to get. So I feel like that Iowa State
- 12:33TCU game was another one of those.
- 12:35You just never know what you're going to get in November.
- 12:37But in those kinds of games, when you have teams that are
- 12:40seemingly at that at this point, either average or or slightly
- 12:44above average, and you put them on a field together, weird
- 12:47things happen. The fact that that game was in
- 12:49Fort Worth led me to believe TCU would win.
- 12:51But Iowa State winning and pulling that off?
- 12:54Nice feather for them as they try to get ready for a bowl
- 12:57game. Final week of the regular
- 12:58season, we'll get to see Iowa State against the Cowpokes,
- 13:02Oklahoma State, who was just getting throttled week after
- 13:05week after week. Who are some of the candidates
- 13:07that are realistic? Because I'll be honest, I've
- 13:09completely checked out. I mean, we've seen the Domino's
- 13:11fall. So many big, more prestigious
- 13:14programs have job openings right now.
- 13:17The the dream of like an Alex Golish, he's not going to take
- 13:20that job. There's going to be certainly
- 13:22higher ones there. Who are some of the names that
- 13:24are realistically out there for Okie State?
- 13:28Yeah, this is a bad time to be looking for a head coach given
- 13:31everything that's happened in the SEC and all these other big
- 13:33time jobs that have opened up. You know, I think Golish will
- 13:38probably, I think he'll probably still take an interview with
- 13:41Oklahoma State just because, you know, he was there for a little
- 13:44while. But yeah, he's going to have
- 13:45bigger opportunities. I, I, I, I still say go offer
- 13:52Jeff trailer the moon down at UTSAI think he's very frustrated
- 13:57with the NIL situation there. I think he is somewhat
- 13:59frustrated with the, the, the fan base situation down there.
- 14:03It seems like he's saying things weekly that just seem kind of
- 14:07odd to me in terms of the guy who was signed a long term deal
- 14:10to be there. I think this might be the time
- 14:13where he says to himself, this might be a time for me to go to
- 14:17a power conference job. He's seeing what his buddy Joey
- 14:19McGuire is doing at Texas Tech. They're both former high school
- 14:21football coaches. They both went the college
- 14:24assistant route to get in position to be head coaches at
- 14:27the college level. He's staying with Joey McGuire
- 14:30is doing. Obviously he's a competitive
- 14:32dude. He won three streets, 3 state
- 14:34titles at Gilmer before he became an assistant coach of
- 14:36Texas. I could see, I could see him
- 14:39being a leading candidate by the time the season's over just by
- 14:42virtue of his Texas ties, the ability to recruit in the state,
- 14:45the fact that he turned UTSA around so quickly and the fact
- 14:49that, you know, this might be the right time for him to
- 14:51finally pounce on a high major job.
- 14:53Right now. I think he's I think he's the
- 14:55guy that has the best shot to get it.
- 14:57Because you're right, Oklahoma State's not going to have their
- 14:59pick of, you know, any high major or, or other power
- 15:04conference coaches at this point.
- 15:06They're going to have to go to the group of five route.
- 15:08And right now he's probably the most attainable.
- 15:11I don't think John Summerall is attainable because I think he's
- 15:13going to go to an SEC school. I think Ryan Silverfield is
- 15:16going to end up at an SEC school.
- 15:18Like you said, Golish, I think he's going to have his pick of,
- 15:21of options. I think I think Jeff Trailer is
- 15:22going to be their best option. Yeah, fascinating stuff.
- 15:25By the way, you mentioned Joey McGuire, and I read the piece at
- 15:27Heartland College Sports, and I couldn't agree with you more.
- 15:30I love the fact that he threw shade at Notre Dame without
- 15:32naming them, but went to bat for BYU, who they just dispatched
- 15:36over the weekend for taking the path that they did as opposed to
- 15:40Notre Dame. That was I thought that was
- 15:41really well done and Joey Mcguire's earned the right to do
- 15:44that with the season he and his group are having.
- 15:47Matt Postons Heartland College sports Heartland College sports
- 15:49recovers the Big 12, both basketball and football.
- 15:53Matt, love the relationship. Thanks for doing what you do and
- 15:56we'll talk to you down the road. Thank you.
- 15:58Matt Postons. Sounds good guys, go get some
- 16:00ham. Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:02That's next. We're going to have good stuff.
- 16:03Matt Postons, Heartland College Sports.
- 16:06You can follow Matt at Poston's postcards at Poston's postcards
- 16:10for Matt's as Matt Poston's covers the Big 12.
- 16:14He's right. The group of freshmen in this
- 16:16conference, I think that's going to be one of the stories of the
- 16:19year. Just how many?
- 16:19Probably 1. And donors?
- 16:21Probably 1. And Pete Peterson is for sure A1
- 16:24and done, no doubt about that. All right, as we said, we've
- 16:28been talking about this for the last 10 days or so.
- 16:32The the hams that appears on my Thanksgiving table each and
- 16:36every Thanksgiving. And we thought, you know what,
- 16:38let's go right to the guys, Bruce, Lambert, Lambert and
- 16:41yours. You can find them online for
- 16:43hams, the number for hams.com, for hams.com.
- 16:47And Bruce joins us. Bruce Trenton, Ken, thanks for
- 16:49coming on. Good to talk to you.
- 16:51Thanks for having me. Yeah, Well, I want to come right
- 16:53to you because I know there's deadlines out there because you
- 16:55guys ship these all over the state and obviously we're all
- 17:00over the country, right? But tick tick ticking to towards
- 17:03Thanksgiving. Why don't we start there?
- 17:05Central Iowa deadline to go to 4hams.com and order your ham and
- 17:11to to make sure to ensure that it gets to your place on time.
- 17:16You know, we're all, first of all, let me stop and I want to
- 17:19thank all of our veterans out there guys for keeping it,
- 17:22keeping us free and safe. So I want to I want to shout out
- 17:24to all of them right off the bat, but in Iowa, guys, you
- 17:29know, it's one day UPS. So you know, we're already
- 17:33prepared for the last minute guys.
- 17:34So you can probably call us the weekend before Thanksgiving on
- 17:39that 800 number or online and we could still get you taken care
- 17:43of out of state. You know, it's probably the
- 17:44weekend before. So we're probably looking, you
- 17:47know, you should let us know. So we get those out the 17th and
- 17:50everything up and make sure they arrive nice and cold this the
- 17:54weekend before Thanksgiving. But locally we can still.
- 17:57And if you're in the metro area, you know, you, you know, hell,
- 18:00I'm hungry. Oops, sorry, Pression said that,
- 18:02but I'm hungry. So, you know, you call us the
- 18:05night before and I probably stay up all night and throw one in my
- 18:08Toyota and get it out to you for Thanksgiving.
- 18:11As you've done. Before so I have done it.
- 18:14I have done it before. You are correct.
- 18:16So yeah, it's that time though it's and you know, we always I
- 18:20mean, I hate the winter. I hate the winter more than
- 18:22anybody, but the sooner it snaps cooler, the people start
- 18:25thinking about their ovens and they start thinking about ham
- 18:27dinners and it helps us out. So it's been a pretty nice fall
- 18:31and people are finally starting to realize, hey, holidays are
- 18:33coming and you know, it's time to stick a ham in the oven.
- 18:36So let's get on. Let's get on the website and get
- 18:39it ordered so. Bruce, it's time.
- 18:42It's time and Bruce, you know, also in our audience there are
- 18:46plenty of guys that are really good cooks, but there's also
- 18:49someones that struggle just a little bit.
- 18:52So Phyllis in all right, you're thinking about having some
- 18:55people over. Maybe it's friends, maybe it's
- 18:57family, doing it for the first time.
- 18:58How difficult of a process because it's cooked, it's done.
- 19:02Oh, man, that's I'm you know, I'm so excited to deal with
- 19:05these millenniums and just Sears, you know, because they,
- 19:08for one, they like stuff delivered.
- 19:10They don't want to talk to me. They don't see me.
- 19:11They don't want to smell me, you know, they just want something
- 19:14ordered. They want to deliver.
- 19:15They want people to tell them, hey, it's in, it's in South Des
- 19:18Moines now it's going north, you know, now it's in, you know, and
- 19:21God bless them. That's the way, you know, that's
- 19:23way the future and that's the way we handle our deliveries.
- 19:26But the ease of cooking a ham, I mean, we can take, you know, we
- 19:31can take the you know, we can almost have a three-year old
- 19:34make a make a Thanksgiving dinner with our ham.
- 19:37You know, it's that easy. They're fully cooked.
- 19:39They're already pre sliced, they're glazed or you just warm
- 19:42it. The matter of fact, the only way
- 19:44you can ruin it is to over warm it.
- 19:46So how about you know, you can't undercook it.
- 19:48You can eat a cold. Forgotten.
- 19:49I do. Have to, you know, so, yeah.
- 19:51And, and actually, I probably, you know, I actually sometimes
- 19:55warm mine a day and then, and then chill it and then rewarm
- 19:59it. I think you could leave a little
- 20:00bit better flavor. I don't want to be responsible
- 20:02for ruin anybody's refrigerator, you know, But yeah, it's, it's
- 20:07so easy to serve. I mean, it's so easy.
- 20:10The only thing you can do is overwarm it and that, you know,
- 20:13and go from there because it's just so easy.
- 20:16Sizes turn anybody into a cooking chef.
- 20:18You really, you really can. And as I said, I I I pick it
- 20:21right off and just start. I'm full but the time it goes
- 20:24into the oven. It's so good, you gotta be.
- 20:26Careful, you do, absolutely. So what about sizes, Obviously
- 20:30everybody's got different size of gatherings etcetera.
- 20:33Why don't you talk a minute about that?
- 20:35Sure, exactly. So we sell the ham two ways by
- 20:37the full ham, obviously that's the way it comes out of the
- 20:39smokehouse. You know, the leg falls off and
- 20:42we, we do our magic to it and there's a full ham going to
- 20:45weigh 15 to 16 lbs. You know, we buy them, you know,
- 20:48so that they come out that size almost every single time.
- 20:51It's, you know, meat science, you know, it's not really
- 20:53science, but it is science, you know.
- 20:55So we, you know, we've got our smoke houses formulated for the
- 20:58certain size of ham. So we sell that full ham, 1516
- 21:02lbs going to feed about 1/2 a pound per person with that bone
- 21:06in it. So you're talking, you know, 30
- 21:08people, you know, you just cut that in half.
- 21:10You got the average size Thanksgiving, you know, dinner,
- 21:13you know, 10/12/15 people, you're going to get a nice size
- 21:16half ham and, and you'll be good to go.
- 21:18And you can order on the website.
- 21:20There's different, you can even order a little bit smaller half
- 21:23ham and average size half a little bit bigger half ham.
- 21:25The whole hams are about the same always, but because if we
- 21:29put a too small one in there, it gets a little too dry.
- 21:31If we get too big, it doesn't dry out enough, you know?
- 21:34So we hit that sweet spot with that 15 LB ham coming out of the
- 21:37smokehouse. So yeah, you got two options,
- 21:401/2 in the hole and we can take care of about anybody.
- 21:43Yeah. And you do it so well.
- 21:45It's phenomenal. Thank you.
- 21:47It's. Been doing it a long time and,
- 21:49and, and we like to think, we like to think we got it down.
- 21:53Yeah, you, you. It's perfect.
- 21:55Really is. It's been on my table.
- 21:56I've been saying it. And I can't imagine Thanksgiving
- 21:59without a spruce. Best of luck brother.

- 22:04Iowa. Anywhere.

- 22:09hey, can I send one to my son serving over in Guam?
- 22:12We can't do that. We can get him.
- 22:14We can get him anywhere else, guys. 4hamsthe#4hams.com.

- 22:47Miller and Condon on a Tuesday, Vinny Irenext Trents plays of
- 22:51the day. Still to come, it's the Iowa
- 22:54Sports Radio Network. I'm Hillary Condon, welcome
- 23:00back. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 23:02Network. Wherever listening in the state
- 23:03of Iowa. Glad that you are or anywhere on
- 23:05the I Heart app. Vinny Iyer, he covers the NFL
- 23:08for the Sporting News, sportingnews.com for Vinny also
- 23:12does his daily Locked on fantasy foot football podcast, part of
- 23:16the Locked on network. And Vinny joins us.
- 23:19Vinny Trenton, Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 23:20Good to speak with you, you know, before we get into the
- 23:23NFLI, watched your, I watched your cats against USC on Friday
- 23:27night. I hadn't seen them.
- 23:29I don't think all year. Northwestern.
- 23:31They're a decent football team this year, Vinny.
- 23:34Yeah, they're decent. I think just the expansion of
- 23:37the Big 10, I mean, it's so huge now that you're going to have a
- 23:41wide range of styles of teams you play and look at that game,
- 23:47they just didn't have enough offense and they can win.
- 23:49That version of grinding away games, the running game and all
- 23:53that, it can take you pretty far, right?
- 23:55I mean, it's still a thing. If you play good defense, you
- 23:58can run the ball, you're going to have a chance in every game.
- 24:01But sometimes getting there, you're getting the explosive
- 24:04players you need is harder. And USC is kind of built on
- 24:07explosive players versus kind of the same parts of their game.
- 24:10So I think the Big 10 is going through a little bit of a
- 24:14culture shock. I think Ohio State is the
- 24:16exception because they've kind of played like a wide open West
- 24:20Coast or SEC team for a while now.
- 24:22So that's kind of the team that can adjust easily.
- 24:26But everyone else has been in an adjustment there with Oregon and
- 24:29Washington. And I know Washington's a little
- 24:32bit down, but Oregon is right up there.
- 24:34USC is having a pretty good season still at the playoff
- 24:37hunt. So it's just something to get
- 24:39used to. It's still odd, but that's a Big
- 24:4210 game. But it's really hard to believe
- 24:44that was first time since the Rose Bowl those teams have bet.
- 24:48Yeah, indeed, to the NFL, your primary beat, you know, it
- 24:52wasn't too many years ago. The trend I'd be talking about
- 24:54just how much powers in the AFC in the winner of the AFC is
- 24:57going to be definitely the favoured, whether it be the
- 24:59Patriots, obviously the Chiefs, the run they've had somebody in
- 25:02the AFC North and Vinny, I go through I, I think four teams
- 25:06before, you know, making a power rankings before I finally get to
- 25:09an AFC team and I just by default put the Chiefs down
- 25:13there. But the Lions and the Rams and
- 25:16the Seahawks and the Eagles, I think those four, you can put
- 25:19those four names in a hat. Where are you when it comes to
- 25:21the NFC and just how deep it is this year?
- 25:26Yeah, I mean, it's it's kind of wide open.
- 25:28We don't still know who's going to win the West.
- 25:31We still don't know who's going to win the North, so that's a
- 25:34lot of stuff going on here. I think we feel good.
- 25:37The Tampa Bay and Philadelphia are going to win their division.
- 25:40So at least we know two playoff teams will be returning.
- 25:43But then it's wide open. Seattle's had a good season, but
- 25:46the test comes down. The couple with the Rams, one
- 25:48more with the 49ers. The 49ers will be able to
- 25:52overcome their injuries to rally here the second-half of the
- 25:55season. That's getting something to
- 25:56watch. Can the Bears keep it up here?
- 25:59I think you feel a lot better about Detroit going forward,
- 26:02what they're doing. So it could end up being full
- 26:05circle to what we used to recently with Philadelphia,
- 26:09Tampa Bay, Detroit, and then figuring out, hey, who's going
- 26:14to be that 14 that really competes here?
- 26:17And it's going to be the Rams or the Seahawks or 49ers, somebody
- 26:21else. If we got some new flavor in the
- 26:24Super Bowl out of the AFC, and I'm thinking specifically
- 26:27Patriots, Colts, Broncos, all of them eight and two, all of them
- 26:31on their way, potentially at minimum of hosting a playoff
- 26:34game. Who do you think for this year,
- 26:36and this year only has the most upside potential, the one out of
- 26:39that group of three, Colts, Patriots, Broncos, you could see
- 26:43actually getting to a Super Bowl.
- 26:46Yeah, that's a tough call because again, I think let's
- 26:49take out Denver. Let's take it about I know they
- 26:51have a defense, but I don't think they have enough offense.
- 26:54I don't. Need they got Bonex.
- 26:55They got Bonex. Yeah.
- 26:57Then you look at the Patriots, of course, I think both of those
- 26:59are legit, but teams, I think the Patriots are pretty complete
- 27:04here. And the quarterback, I think you
- 27:06would trust them a little bit more than Daniel Jones in a
- 27:09bigger moment. But Daniel Jones, keep in mind
- 27:11he won playoff games with the Giants.
- 27:14He did, yeah, on the road. So yeah.
- 27:16Yeah. So I think you can say, look, I
- 27:19think it's a tie between those two teams.
- 27:21I think the Colts are probably in a better position to get that
- 27:24number one seed still and the Patriots still have to deal with
- 27:28the Bills, even though it's opened up a little bit that
- 27:30lead. So I don't know.
- 27:32It's going to be, again, traditionally, it's tough to win
- 27:35in Foxborough in the cold months, though.
- 27:38I think whoever gets the home field there is going to be
- 27:40interesting. I don't believe in Denver, not
- 27:44just as the team that's going to be the number one seed or win
- 27:48the division, but just as a team that I think is going to maybe
- 27:52fade a little bit and be more of a wild card team in the
- 27:54second-half, if that. Because again, there's some
- 27:57teams charging there. I mean, we figure the Chiefs and
- 28:00Chargers are going to have something to do with it.
- 28:01I think the Jaguars are fading. So that might open the door up
- 28:05again for three SUS teams to make it.
- 28:08Yeah, I'm I'm with you, Vinny. Let's go to the North, however,
- 28:11and try to decipher this thing because Joe Burrow sounds like
- 28:15he's going to be back for Thanksgiving and if he is, what
- 28:18a huge boost that will be. Baltimore very much alive.
- 28:22They've won for the last three games.
- 28:24Now they've got their quarterback back.
- 28:25Pittsburgh. I never was a believer.
- 28:27I'm still not a believer is since Cincinnati out of this
- 28:31thing. I mean, I think you're going to
- 28:32have to win the division to get in.
- 28:34I don't see a wild card and I agree with your scenario that
- 28:37the two of the wild cards are coming out of the West.
- 28:40Is Cincinnati a live to win the AFC North?
- 28:43Assuming Borough is back, say Thanksgiving.
- 28:47Well, the schedule has really opened that door, right?
- 28:50I mean, the Bengals, if they can sweep the Steelers, they'll be a
- 28:53big part of that this week, get the job done.
- 28:56And they're still got one more game with Cleveland to the 2
- 28:59with Baltimore. So there's a lot riding on this
- 29:02and he's going to get back in time.
- 29:05Look, I think that game that they're going to look back on
- 29:07that they blew, really they blew two games.
- 29:09But the Bears are a tough team. The Jets game is the one that
- 29:13themselves about if they lose the division.
- 29:16But everyone has one of those, right?
- 29:18I mean, Baltimore's had plenty of those.
- 29:20I think Baltimore's schedule opens up better.
- 29:22But what might be interesting is I know the Steelers are in the
- 29:27top spot, but again, if they lose the Bengals this week, I
- 29:31think the power is going to shift to the Bengals and Ravens
- 29:34being the two team race at this point.
- 29:36I mean, the Bengals can win. And The funny thing is the
- 29:39quarterback is not for the problem ever since they acquired
- 29:42Joe Flacco, it's can they stop anyone?
- 29:44That's the concern for the Ravens.
- 29:46Defense also was not playing well and the Steelers will also
- 29:49not play well. So ultimately offense could
- 29:51still decide this division, which is where it say.
- 29:55Vinny are joining us from The Sporting News and Locked on
- 29:57Fantasy football. Got a fantasy question for you
- 29:59here in just a little bit. Continuing through some of the
- 30:02nuts and bolts though, we have a firing Dable gone Jackson Dart 4
- 30:07concussions. How big of a component was that?
- 30:11I mean, I think it's hard to blame a coach for concussions,
- 30:15but he kept going out there. Was it too?
- 30:18I mean, there's AI know there's a lot of layers to all of this,
- 30:21but does that go hand in hand with this firing and what we've
- 30:23seen from Jackson Dart and the injuries?
- 30:27Yeah, I think there's a lad. I think they were just looking
- 30:30for an entry point of like, OK, when are we going to cool off
- 30:33here? I think, I mean, I think you
- 30:35can't totally forget about that Broncos game from a few weeks
- 30:39ago with the lead and they had all the momentum.
- 30:42They were feeling good. They got those wins against the
- 30:45Chargers and Eagles, right. They were feeling like there
- 30:47might be a turn around and then that game looked like, oh, the
- 30:51giants might be pushing in the right direction when they melted
- 30:54down in the fourth quarter. Then you had the bears game well
- 30:58in hand and they'll start going down and help, but they still
- 31:01have a lead to protect from the way they played the late night
- 31:04game was not very good. So maybe just all things
- 31:07consider was building up for a while.
- 31:09Then they realized, OK, when we have the worst record now in the
- 31:12NFC with the winning a game dart maybe having a missed time, this
- 31:18might be time to get us a head start on looking for head coach.
- 31:22Are they trying to tank by playing Russell Wilson over
- 31:24Jameis Wilson? Not that Jameis Winston's going
- 31:26to Canton. Russell Wilson's been washed for
- 31:29years. He's absolutely disgraced and is
- 31:31stealing money every time he straps on his helmet or shows up
- 31:35in the building. I have no idea what teams
- 31:37continue to see in this Guy's been a long time since he's been
- 31:40in Seattle. Why?
- 31:41Why is Russell Wilson still on a still on an NFL Phil roster?
- 31:44I don't get it, Vinny. Yeah, I don't know.
- 31:48I mean, he's definitely lost something there.
- 31:51I think the loss of all this just started maybe in Seattle.
- 31:55He used to be a very durable quarterback when he had some
- 31:57injuries. I think even in mind, this
- 31:59dude's taken a lot of hits over the years too.
- 32:02Backs and hits have really piled up over the years for him.
- 32:06And he's not the same type of athlete and runners the way he
- 32:08was as a younger quarterback as well.
- 32:11That was his big deal, right? He's jaw-dropping plays.
- 32:14He would make off improvisation and just be out there, make
- 32:18these plays. Now.
- 32:19The funny thing is like if you just put his decade in Seattle
- 32:22by itself, you say Hall of Fame. This is a whole career, right?
- 32:26So, and I, I still think when we pull back in time to say look at
- 32:31all the stuff he did in Seattle, we're going to look at that.
- 32:34So it's basically 2 careers. Look, the second act doesn't
- 32:38always work for everybody. It worked for Bill Flacco.
- 32:41Overall, second act in some ways has been more impressive than
- 32:45the first act. But like some people just can't
- 32:48do it right. I mean, sometimes they're just
- 32:50best off being a starter and when they lose it, they have to
- 32:53be a backup there. It's not going to be the same.
- 32:55So I think Russell Wilson is just one of those quarterbacks.
- 32:59And again, we'll see if let's be on the line.
- 33:01We'll see if the Raiders still let me give him a shot here.
- 33:06Breakdown with Gina Smith, I don't know.
- 33:08That would maybe be a last last resort, or otherwise it looks
- 33:12like he might be on the lead. Just one more thing on this, and
- 33:15I thought you had a really poignant and made a great point.
- 33:19Russell Wilson Hall of Fame career in Seattle.
- 33:21I agree with you. Is he playing his way out of the
- 33:23Hall of Fame? Can you do that?
- 33:26I'm not sure that can happen too much.
- 33:28I mean, it just really is a time, right?
- 33:30He may have played himself out of maybe being like an early.
- 33:34Yes, good point. Like Matthew Stafford's part of
- 33:37playing himself, even though he doesn't have a lot of
- 33:39credentials that would traditionally look at in terms
- 33:43of the Pro Bowls and all pros. And he's the highest he's ever
- 33:46finished MVP 8. I know he's having MVP like
- 33:50season. I don't think personally he's
- 33:52the Rams MVP. I think it's a very complete
- 33:55loaded team. Like I don't think he's carrying
- 33:58the Ram, so I'll just say that. An offensive line to the
- 34:01greatest receivers we've seen and running back.
- 34:04So I mean, yeah, I think he's just executing a very good
- 34:07offense. And really, Sean McVeigh, should
- 34:09we get any more buzz for coach of the year?
- 34:12But when you look at it like I don't know what MVP is anymore,
- 34:15Like I didn't think Alan was better than Lamar Jackson last
- 34:18year. So whatever you want to look at
- 34:20it, I think he can surge in being in the Hall of Fame and
- 34:23that's what I'm more interested with that Stafford again, but
- 34:26this type of season late in his career, I think he's going to
- 34:29stamp it because again, he doesn't have the accolades.
- 34:32So everyone else is a regular season plus contemporary have
- 34:37that line is a good example. I think Ryan has Hall of Fame
- 34:40credentials. If he wins the Super Bowl, I
- 34:43think he's a stone cold lock. But I still think you've been
- 34:46back there with Stafford. I think if they make one more
- 34:49run here and he keeps playing well and Trump based offense for
- 34:53another couple years, that's going to be in there as.
- 34:55Well, yeah, another Super Bowl go a long way.
- 34:58Excellent point. Vinny Iyer from The Sporting
- 35:00News and Locked on Fantasy. Locked on Fantasy every single
- 35:03day, part of the Locked On network and sportingnews.com.
- 35:06Vinny, as always, thanks for doing this.
- 35:07Appreciate it. Thanks guys.
- 35:10Good to talk to you, Vinny Iyer, as we check in on the NFL.
- 35:14All right, Trent, not a Russell Wilson fan.
- 35:16Did you notice just? A little bit.
- 35:21It's personal. It is.
- 35:22Yes, it is. You're 1000% right.
- 35:24Yeah. He leads to the Denver Broncos.
- 35:27They had to be willing. To give the.
- 35:29Money, they wrote the check willing they.
- 35:30Didn't have a gun to their. Head.
- 35:31No, True, true. But he is a salesman.
- 35:35He's a con man. You know who he is?
- 35:36I said all the time. And if you watch movies, I don't
- 35:39watch many of them, but I watch Josie Wales.
- 35:41He's the guy in the white tuxedo selling the elixir that Josie
- 35:45Wales spits tobacco juice all over his white tuxedo.
- 35:48That's Russell Wilson 1/4 before 2.
- 35:52Trent's plays of the day. Circus Sports sponsored those.
- 35:55Miller and Condon glad you're with us on Des Moines Sports
- 35:58Station 106.3 KXNO I'm Miller, Condon, our final segment on a
- 36:09Tuesday. Tomorrow Cappy will be with us.
- 36:14We'll take a look at USC tomorrow in the 1:30 slot.
- 36:18That's coming up tomorrow, Miller and Condon weekdays, noon
- 36:20until 2 coming up after we get finished here, of course, off
- 36:23the bench. Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts,
- 36:26they're coming up. Take you until 5:00.
- 36:28All right, Circus sports, sponsors, Transplays of the day,
- 36:33couple games in action tonight, Ohio and Western Michigan, and
- 36:39then Kent State and Akron. There's NBA.
- 36:42There's college hoops aplenty. Where will you be putting your
- 36:47wagering dollars? Well, we're already firing and.
- 36:50There's games already, Terry. Oh yeah, we got a big match up.
- 36:53The team that always screws you up on the bottom line, Iona,
- 36:56they're down in Kansas City taking on the ruse.
- 36:59A 17 point lead for the Gales in that one.
- 37:01But 7, seven games and I went through.
- 37:05I got too many underdogs again. I don't, I don't know.
- 37:09I got 7 plays. They're probably going to be
- 37:11terrible. 7 plays any football, no wake.
- 37:14Forest plus 15 1/2. Against Michigan.
- 37:17At Michigan, want to see and I want to see Omaha Blue tonight
- 37:21as he plays for Wake. Forest I forgot.
- 37:23About him Big 12 teams, Cincinnati, the Battle of
- 37:26Ohio's. They host Dayton, my lone
- 37:29favorite of the night. Gonna lay the five and a half
- 37:31with the Bearcats and then we get into the battle of
- 37:33Connecticut. No Yukons not involved.
- 37:35Quinnipiac against Yale. I'll grab Quinnipiac in the
- 37:38seven and a half. I mean, how can you say no to
- 37:40that with an in state rivalry game?
- 37:43How about Wofford getting 27 1/2?
- 37:45Kind of a look ahead spot here for Auburn.
- 37:47That's the way that I handicapped this one.
- 37:49Look ahead for Auburn as they got Houston on deck this
- 37:51weekend. Grab the 27 in the hook with the
- 37:54Terriers of Wofford. All right, back to normal games.
- 37:57We got three decent ones to wrap things up.
- 37:59Now you got Creighton Gonzaga in there, yes.
- 38:01Good. Give me the points all day long.
- 38:02Hell yeah. 11 1/2. That's too many.
- 38:04Yes, Memphis get 9 1/2 in a quasi rivalry game against Ole
- 38:08Miss. Yeah, I'll grab all those points
- 38:10and I'll do the same because this team's going to win out,
- 38:12right? Oh, tech's going to throttle
- 38:14Illinois. Are you saying the wrong team is
- 38:16favored? Wrong team favored.
- 38:18Give me the Red Raiders plus the four and a little a little
- 38:23sprinkle on that money line. All right, good stuff.
- 38:25That's the plays of the day. Circus Sports sponsor those
- 38:30losing day yesterday to start the week for you One.
- 38:32And one one was the money go. Well, but still not as bad as it
- 38:35could have been. Well, what do you expect to hear
- 38:37on the TV show tonight? What?
- 38:39Will you? I will hear nothing.
- 38:39About what will you be pissed off about that you read?
- 38:42But I will see what the I don't know, will they sneak in a group
- 38:47of five team? Well, they weren't even in the
- 38:49top 25 last week. Well, does that mean?
- 38:52But who would sneak in there? USF, right?
- 38:58They are and they're and they've got some really good wins early
- 39:00here. I hope it's them.
- 39:03I hope it's them. Just put them in there.
- 39:04Yeah, make it easier. Yeah, I'm with you.
- 39:07We'll see where it goes. Good stuff.
- 39:09All right, nice. Just talk to USC tomorrow.
- 39:10They got so many skilled guys. Trent, this is not going to be
- 39:12easy. But Kyle Lemon is so.
- 39:14Good. He certainly is.
- 39:15So is King Miller. They're both.
- 39:17They've got 2 running backs. Yes.
- 39:18And my Eve is a good has good quarterbacks.
- 39:21This is a Phil Parker special. It has to be for the Hawks to
- 39:24have a chance. Good luck.
- 39:25What's the number 6 1/2? All right, that'll do it for us.
- 39:28We'll be back tomorrow at noon. Coming up next, as we mentioned
- 39:33off the bench, Lucas and Sean, every day starts at 6:00 AM.
