- 0:00Speaker 1: Off the Bench with Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn. Okay,
- 0:03Speaker 1: here we go. Where the plays get broken down and
- 0:06Speaker 1: science gets denied.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Dude, they said I gotta come off the bench.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Hour two of Off the Bench, live from the Raising
- 0:11Speaker 3: Cane Studio.
- 0:31Speaker 4: .
- 0:55Speaker 5: .
- 1:17Speaker 1: All right, welcome back in OTV. Let's start this hour.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I want to remind you that every single Friday during
- 1:27Speaker 1: football season, we are at Rouse's. Rouse's is right there
- 1:30Speaker 1: on Burbank and Lee. We do the entire show there,
- 1:34Speaker 1: and we are there for the full three hours. Come
- 1:36Speaker 1: hang out with us. It's always fun. Every time we
- 1:39Speaker 1: have a couple of listeners, come hang out with us.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Enjoy the time. Get a little breakfast bar.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Mm-mm.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Watch our guy, the master at work behind us with
- 1:48Speaker 1: the sushi bar. Pre-made meals. Tailgating packages. Ready to go.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Pick them up. It's incredible. Take them to the tailgate. Hydration.
- 1:58Speaker 1: If you're into that.
- 2:01Speaker 6: They're selling quickly right now. Shelves are a little barren
- 2:08Speaker 6: over there in the my eye section.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Whatever you got to tell yourself for having the
- 2:12Speaker 1: orange and blue my eye out there. They're delicious. Yeah,
- 2:18Speaker 1: but those two colors together without anything to break it up. Yeah, okay. Well,
- 2:24Speaker 1: that's all that was there. I hate Florida. Thank you.
- 2:32Speaker 1: That's all I was looking for. One of the common
- 2:35Speaker 1: themes as we get back into the LSU discussion is
- 2:39Speaker 1: obviously LSU embracing being the villain. And we talked about it.
- 2:45Speaker 1: I'm here for it. We were all fine with it.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And it just continues on down the road. Whether LSU
- 2:52Speaker 1: fans like it or not, Lane walking through that door
- 2:58Speaker 1: changed the way the rest of college football looks at
- 2:59Speaker 1: this program. We all know that. He has never been,
- 3:05Speaker 1: I think, neutral, which I love about him. You know
- 3:09Speaker 1: where you stand. People either love Lane Kiffin or they
- 3:13Speaker 1: want to hate him. And so now you've been paired
- 3:15Speaker 1: with that personality with LSU, a program that doesn't exactly
- 3:21Speaker 1: get a lot of sympathy, I think, outside the state
- 3:25Speaker 1: of Louisiana anyways. And so fully lean into it, which
- 3:30Speaker 1: is what LSU, I think, has fully done from everyone
- 3:34Speaker 1: involved in the program. You've got a coach who isn't
- 3:37Speaker 1: afraid of expectations, isn't afraid of the spotlight, certainly isn't
- 3:42Speaker 1: afraid of Irritating the other sideline, right? Came to LSU
- 3:50Speaker 1: because he wanted the biggest stage and the pressure that
- 3:52Speaker 1: kind of comes with it. He's mentioned that multiple times.
- 3:54Speaker 1: He mentioned it after the game against Clemson. And, you know,
- 3:59Speaker 1: after you beat a team like Clemson 51 to 10,
- 4:02Speaker 1: I think that attention, probably that dislike of LSU is
- 4:06Speaker 1: only going to get louder, you know? But everybody doesn't
- 4:11Speaker 1: have to like you. If everybody likes you, You're doing
- 4:14Speaker 1: it the wrong way. I truly believe that. And you
- 4:17Speaker 1: might have a different opinion, but if everybody likes you,
- 4:22Speaker 1: are you doing stuff for yourself? Are you doing stuff
- 4:25Speaker 1: that needs to be done? Or are you just doing
- 4:28Speaker 1: stuff to please people? I see what you say.
- 4:33Speaker 6: And so there's a couple of ways to be the villain.
- 4:38Speaker 6: There's being the villain because you beat everybody's ass and
- 4:42Speaker 6: no one has a chance against you.
- 4:43Speaker 1: That's the kind of villain we want to be.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:46Speaker 6: And it's not all, you're either doing something right because
- 4:50Speaker 6: nobody likes you in that more former fashion or debatably
- 4:54Speaker 6: you're doing something that people don't like for whatever reason,
- 4:58Speaker 6: they either don't understand or don't respect makes you also
- 5:02Speaker 6: the makes you also a villain. So like, I'm all
- 5:04Speaker 6: about being a villain because of, of winning. But there
- 5:09Speaker 6: is a, um, The reason why a lot of people
- 5:15Speaker 6: weren't liking him recently didn't even have, like, anything to do.
- 5:19Speaker 6: It didn't even come to fruition. Like, the two guys
- 5:22Speaker 6: that people were saying, or NFL players, they weren't on
- 5:27Speaker 6: the roster. So, like, that reasoning, if that's the reason
- 5:31Speaker 6: why you, some of the public or whatever, is hating Lane,
- 5:35Speaker 6: then that's not a reason right now because they didn't
- 5:40Speaker 6: get Rod. There's all this court case and all this stuff.
- 5:43Speaker 6: But I think people just outside of that, let's put
- 5:47Speaker 6: the NFL stuff, like the NFL players and the whole
- 5:50Speaker 6: litigation and all that stuff and them, you know, Lane
- 5:53Speaker 6: choosing not to roster them, even though he was told,
- 5:55Speaker 6: you know, at least in the short.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Term that he could. Let's take that. Let's take before.
- 6:00Speaker 6: I think it's just the whole situation of Lane getting
- 6:04Speaker 6: put in a really tough spot because of the college
- 6:06Speaker 6: football schedule, the calendar year. Um, he had to make
- 6:10Speaker 6: decisions that people didn't respect. And then of course they
- 6:13Speaker 6: start looking in your past and man, I don't think
- 6:14Speaker 6: anybody here or anybody listening wants people to dive too
- 6:18Speaker 6: far into the past.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Right. I mean, this is, there's, there's things that we
- 6:22Speaker 1: would all wish that we could go back and change.
- 6:24Speaker 6: Um, so I'm all about being a villain because, uh,
- 6:27Speaker 6: and I'm all about people not liking you because of winning.
- 6:31Speaker 6: And I think that's probably been my hesitation and, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 6: there's gotta be some sort of like, I, I think
- 6:36Speaker 6: we try to, We call it like we see it
- 6:39Speaker 6: around here on this show, whether we like it, don't
- 6:42Speaker 6: like it, whether it's LSU, whether it's pro-LSU.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Whatever it is.
- 6:46Speaker 6: And that's been my hesitation a lot of times is because,
- 6:51Speaker 6: you know, there's ways that you do things, ways that
- 6:54Speaker 6: you don't things. I always want LSU to be respected,
- 6:58Speaker 6: maybe feared, maybe disliked, but still respected, and I hope
- 7:01Speaker 6: we continue to do that. And winning solves a lot
- 7:04Speaker 6: of things. Winning makes people forget about a lot of things.
- 7:07Speaker 6: You can see the product that's put on the field
- 7:09Speaker 6: this past weekend. A lot of people have made a
- 7:12Speaker 6: lot of people forget about other things. So my hope
- 7:16Speaker 6: for LSU is that we are disliked because we are winning,
- 7:19Speaker 6: but we are respected.
- 7:23Speaker 1: From everybody. That's the hope. And I hear that too.
- 7:28Speaker 1: I do. Would you say 2019 LSU was like that? Yeah,
- 7:33Speaker 1: for sure. Respected by.
- 7:36Speaker 6: The masses, but not, you know, not really life. Because
- 7:40Speaker 6: they're like, I can't beat you. I mean, just look
- 7:42Speaker 6: at the most recent example. It's Alabama and Georgia for
- 7:46Speaker 6: a short amount of time. Nobody liked them. We hated them.
- 7:51Speaker 6: We hated Saban.
- 7:52Speaker 1: And Alabama, right? We hated them. Because we couldn't beat them.
- 7:56Speaker 1: But by God, did we respect them? That's my hope.
- 8:01Speaker 1: That's my hope.
- 8:04Speaker 6: And it's off to a good start from an on-the-field standpoint.
- 8:08Speaker 6: I don't think there's any doubt about the on-the-field.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I was looking at this a little bit last night,
- 8:19Speaker 1: and I just feel like it's going to be all
- 8:24Speaker 1: season long. I mean, there's people– I'll give you an example.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Like our friend Alyssa Lange. She went to South Carolina.
- 8:35Speaker 1: South Carolina's biggest rival is who? Clemson.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Yep.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I was going to say North Carolina. This guy. Jeez,
- 8:43Speaker 1: I'm thieves. And she's like, South Carolina fans, because this
- 8:47Speaker 1: is right after everything happened. Like, who are you rooting for?
- 8:51Speaker 1: Clemson or LSU? Like, it got to that point. Like,
- 8:54Speaker 1: wait a minute. Like, Clemson's your biggest rival. What do
- 8:57Speaker 1: you mean? But that's just how LSU is going to
- 9:00Speaker 1: be viewed this year. Maybe I'm going too far to that.
- 9:05Speaker 1: And Alondra Tatey, I'd love to invite y'all to this conversation.
- 9:09Speaker 1: But like my feeling is just make sure when they
- 9:12Speaker 1: get there, they've got a reason to hate you even
- 9:14Speaker 1: more when they leave. Again, I see where you're coming
- 9:21Speaker 1: from and I get it. But I started to really
- 9:25Speaker 1: think about it. I was like, what do I care about?
- 9:27Speaker 1: What do I care about? Oh, I care about LSU.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I don't care about anybody else. And there's going to
- 9:36Speaker 1: be a lot of things that come with it. Now,
- 9:39Speaker 1: the players didn't end up even being rostered. Maybe they
- 9:41Speaker 1: are later. I don't know. But, like, all of that,
- 9:46Speaker 1: I think that just kind of comes with how it's
- 9:49Speaker 1: going to be playing out here. Like, you're going to
- 9:51Speaker 1: have stuff like that pop up. Yeah.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Yep.
- 9:54Speaker 6: And, like, look, there's things that not everybody has to
- 9:57Speaker 6: always agree.
- 9:58Speaker 1: On or say, oh, well. you know i would have
- 10:00Speaker 1: done it this way blah blah blah like.
- 10:05Speaker 6: You know at the end of the day it looks
- 10:08Speaker 6: like that on this past saturday choo-choo mother you know
- 10:13Speaker 6: what choo-choo.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Uh alondra tay-tay How do y'all feel about that? Because
- 10:20Speaker 1: I guess, and I'm not saying I'm right. Please don't.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I just don't care. I just don't. I care about respect.
- 10:30Speaker 1: You do. I very much highly care. I know. And
- 10:33Speaker 1: I'm not telling you at all that you're wrong.
- 10:35Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I'm just like, I want what's best for those three letters,
- 10:40Speaker 1: those two colors. And if it has to happen because
- 10:43Speaker 1: it just comes with some lanyard, I just don't care.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I think I was thinking about this a little bit yesterday.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I was too. I thought about it a lot yesterday.
- 10:56Speaker 4: The 30 for 30, the Miami one, whenever I watched that,
- 11:01Speaker 4: I was like, man, that looks like so much fun.
- 11:03Speaker 4: I wish that, like, because we had Brian Kelly at
- 11:05Speaker 4: the time whenever I was doing my rewatch of it,
- 11:08Speaker 4: and I was like, this is so fun. Like, I
- 11:10Speaker 4: kind of want to be this team that has swagger.
- 11:13Speaker 4: People don't like them because they're winning and they're good,
- 11:16Speaker 4: and that's what I like. And I think it's going
- 11:19Speaker 4: to be fun and we're going to have a lot
- 11:21Speaker 4: more swag this season than we had with Brian Kelly
- 11:24Speaker 4: as the head coach. And I love that part of it.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Do I think Lane Kiffin can be a little irritating?
- 11:30Speaker 4: And do I understand why other people don't really like
- 11:34Speaker 4: him right now?
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I get it.
- 11:35Speaker 4: But just win and I don't really care.
- 11:38Speaker 1: In a perfect world, I'm with you, Matt.
- 11:42Speaker 7: Like in a perfect world, but I am someone like,
- 11:46Speaker 7: Y'all know, y'all pick on me about Tom Brady, right?
- 11:48Speaker 7: Because I love Tom Brady. I hated Tom Brady for
- 11:51Speaker 7: 23 years. Never respected him. And I should have, but
- 11:56Speaker 7: I didn't because he won. Same thing with Nick Saban.
- 11:58Speaker 7: I love Nick Saban now, man. I think he's the
- 12:00Speaker 7: best one up there on game day. Love his commercials.
- 12:02Speaker 7: Hated that guy for 15 years because you couldn't win.
- 12:05Speaker 7: And like, did I respect him in the back of
- 12:07Speaker 7: my mind?
- 12:07Speaker 2: Sure.
- 12:08Speaker 1: But it didn't matter.
- 12:09Speaker 7: I was going to hate him anyway. So that's how
- 12:11Speaker 7: I look at it, man. Like they're going to hate
- 12:12Speaker 7: you regardless.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I don't care. You just do you like that. That's,
- 12:16Speaker 1: that's what you get when you hire Lane Kiffin.
- 12:18Speaker 7: Like I'm someone that actually always liked Lane, even when
- 12:21Speaker 7: he was at Ole Miss, but like nowadays yours, I
- 12:24Speaker 7: kind of admire it a little bit more like the,
- 12:26Speaker 7: the little bit of a don't care attitude. Like it was,
- 12:30Speaker 7: it was funny when he was at another team, but
- 12:32Speaker 7: now he's at your team. You're like, Oh man, this
- 12:34Speaker 7: is great. This, this could be something special. So I'm
- 12:37Speaker 7: all for it, man. Look, just go out there. As
- 12:39Speaker 7: long as you're having fun, as long as the vibes
- 12:40Speaker 7: are high in your locker room, forget about everybody else.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Look, I'm all about the Tojo. Choo-choo. You know
- 12:49Speaker 1: what I'm saying?
- 12:50Speaker 6: For me, I'd rather be hated because of what I
- 12:53Speaker 6: did during the season, not hated because of what I
- 12:55Speaker 6: do on the offseason.
- 12:59Speaker 1: It's in a perfect world. I don't really care. We win.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Tigers win, baby.
- 13:07Speaker 7: And that's it. At the end of the day, just win.
- 13:10Speaker 7: What did Al Davis say? Just win, baby.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Also in comparison to the Raiders. They won then. They
- 13:19Speaker 1: were good then. You're looking at two Raider haters up here.
- 13:22Speaker 6: Again, we are on a very great start for people
- 13:26Speaker 6: hating us because of what we do during the season,
- 13:28Speaker 6: which is what I want.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Please, bring it on. Us against the world mentality. Awesome, but.
- 13:36Speaker 6: The reason why I said so many things in the
- 13:39Speaker 6: offseason is just because I want the season to be
- 13:42Speaker 6: the reason they hate us, not any other reason.
- 13:47Speaker 1: I am with Elanja, too, about the fun aspect of it, too.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Think about Saturday compared to what it was before. Think
- 13:58Speaker 1: about the vibe. And if you compare, and it's very
- 14:01Speaker 1: hard to do, it's damn near impossible. But if you
- 14:04Speaker 1: compare what we're talking about, that fun, that swag, that
- 14:08Speaker 1: when you walk into a stadium, everybody loves you in
- 14:12Speaker 1: your home stadium, and you walk into an opposing stadium,
- 14:15Speaker 1: and everybody wants the worst possible thing ever for you,
- 14:18Speaker 1: you pair that with being how prepared they were as
- 14:20Speaker 1: a football team, players, coaches, support staff, whatever. That was
- 14:26Speaker 1: a focused football team, way more focused than Clemson was.
- 14:31Speaker 1: If you can pair those two things together, which, again,
- 14:34Speaker 1: it is almost impossible to do. It's almost impossible to
- 14:37Speaker 1: be the fun team, the team that has all the
- 14:40Speaker 1: swag and all this. A lot of times they play
- 14:42Speaker 1: a team that's supposed to be the most prepared, and
- 14:46Speaker 1: the prepared team beats the swaggy team. Clemson's supposed to
- 14:49Speaker 1: be the prepared team. They're the boring one. They're the
- 14:52Speaker 1: one with Dabo. That team wasn't even remotely close to you.
- 14:57Speaker 1: But we were in court two days beforehand. Yeah. That
- 15:00Speaker 1: ish didn't matter. Lane said it yesterday.
- 15:02Speaker 7: Somebody asked him the question about like, oh, the light show,
- 15:06Speaker 7: walking out with Theo Vaughn and all that. And Lane said,
- 15:08Speaker 7: I was fortunate enough to work with two coaching legends.
- 15:11Speaker 7: He goes, I want to bring the discipline that Saban
- 15:13Speaker 7: had on the field with the fun and the swag
- 15:15Speaker 7: that we had out in LA when I was there
- 15:17Speaker 7: with Pete Carroll. He's like, I thought it would be
- 15:19Speaker 7: cool to mix both.
- 15:20Speaker 1: That's what it is. We talked about it before Kelly
- 15:23Speaker 1: got fired.
- 15:23Speaker 7: It's like that team last year, even when they won games,
- 15:27Speaker 7: it still wasn't fun to watch. Did anybody care that
- 15:30Speaker 7: you beat Arkansas? The Clemson game was ugly. We laughed
- 15:33Speaker 7: at DJ Lagway for throwing five interceptions. They still only
- 15:36Speaker 7: scored 20 points with five turnovers. This team is fun.
- 15:40Speaker 7: Regardless of how many wins or losses they have, it's
- 15:42Speaker 7: going to be fun.
- 15:42Speaker 6: And I didn't even put that together. Him and Pete Carroll.
- 15:46Speaker 6: Because in Seattle, we had a basketball goal in our
- 15:48Speaker 6: team room. And we shot basketballs. And every practice had
- 15:51Speaker 6: a theme. It was like a theme day.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Competition days. Turnover Wednesdays. But if you do, if you
- 16:01Speaker 1: pair that, like you said, Pete took a jet ski
- 16:03Speaker 1: to work. At least he did when I went on
- 16:06Speaker 1: my visit. He shows up in a jet ski. Pete's
- 16:09Speaker 1: teams were prepared, I think. I mean, I don't know.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Y'all were pretty good. We know. We know what you
- 16:16Speaker 1: want to say. Say what you need to say.
- 16:21Speaker 6: Look, okay, so I also want to acknowledge the fact
- 16:26Speaker 6: that it's been one game, right?
- 16:29Speaker 1: It's one game.
- 16:30Speaker 6: There's so much overreaction that comes in at the beginning
- 16:33Speaker 6: of the season. There's so much overreaction that can be like, yeah,
- 16:36Speaker 6: Clemson might end up being really bad this year.
- 16:39Speaker 1: We don't really know. They might end up being good.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Of course we don't know.
- 16:42Speaker 6: So I do want to acknowledge the fact that, yeah,
- 16:45Speaker 6: a lot of this is a knee-jerk reaction because of
- 16:49Speaker 6: where we have been as Tiger fans in a whole offseason.
- 16:53Speaker 1: But I'm telling you, I've watched a lot of film.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:59Speaker 1: And I've watched a lot of college film. Okay?
- 17:03Speaker 6: That is probably the best film I've ever seen early
- 17:06Speaker 6: in a season.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:07Speaker 1: From a complete.
- 17:08Speaker 6: And again, I don't know. Clemson might not win a game.
- 17:11Speaker 6: But they also. I mean, we beat. You know what
- 17:14Speaker 6: I'm saying? We beat Virginia Tech.
- 17:16Speaker 2: What?
- 17:16Speaker 1: A billion to whatever. 45-7? Might as well be 100
- 17:20Speaker 1: to nothing. Could have been.
- 17:21Speaker 6: And they finished top 10. And what's the Orange Bowl
- 17:23Speaker 6: that year? It could be a. We just don't know
- 17:26Speaker 6: what Clemson is. Because LSU dominated him so, so much.
- 17:30Speaker 6: So I do want to acknowledge the fact that this
- 17:33Speaker 6: is an overreaction a little bit, but it's also, I'm
- 17:36Speaker 6: looking at the way they're prepared, the effort of which
- 17:40Speaker 6: they played, how they executed, the way they executed.
- 17:43Speaker 1: It wasn't lucky.
- 17:44Speaker 6: Like if I'm watching, if I'm SMU and I'm watching
- 17:46Speaker 6: my game back yesterday, I'm like, yeah, we won the game,
- 17:49Speaker 6: but like, I don't feel great about it.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:51Speaker 1: And we didn't execute very well. It was sloppy. We
- 17:53Speaker 1: played a lot of lucky plays. A couple of guys
- 17:54Speaker 1: were wide open.
- 17:56Speaker 6: If I'm LSU watching this film, yeah, you are going
- 17:58Speaker 6: to have to coach your ass off to make your
- 18:04Speaker 6: team feel bad about that performance. And that's what you
- 18:08Speaker 6: try to do as a coach. You try to break
- 18:11Speaker 6: them down in game film and talk about the bad
- 18:12Speaker 6: plays to build them up, to keep them motivated.
- 18:15Speaker 1: So they got a job on their hands.
- 18:17Speaker 6: But what I saw from the team is the right
- 18:20Speaker 6: chemistry and the right genetic makeup of this team I
- 18:24Speaker 6: think it's a pretty accountable group from what I've seen
- 18:27Speaker 6: so far. So I don't want to overreact, but I
- 18:30Speaker 6: certainly don't want to underreact to the film.
- 18:35Speaker 1: And you're right. It's now on this coaching staff, which
- 18:38Speaker 1: they've tried already with signs in the building and different things,
- 18:41Speaker 1: that you haven't done anything. You have not arrived. It
- 18:44Speaker 1: is one game, but I am going to agree with
- 18:46Speaker 1: you because, well, we're not in that building. We can
- 18:48Speaker 1: kind of talk about it. That was, as good as
- 18:50Speaker 1: you'll see, early in the season as far as the
- 18:53Speaker 1: execution of the attention to detail, not a lot of
- 18:56Speaker 1: missed assignments, and we'll see if they can continue that
- 18:59Speaker 1: this week against Louisiana Tech. All right, we'll take a break.
- 19:01Speaker 1: More OTB when we come back here live from the
- 19:03Speaker 1: Raising Cane Studio. Off the bench. All right, go to centralplumbing.org, centralplumbing.org
- 19:09Speaker 1: in Baton Rouge, the entire greater Baton Rouge area, also
- 19:12Speaker 1: now in Lafayette. That's right, if you have an emergency
- 19:15Speaker 1: game day, weekend, holiday, does not matter, they will be
- 19:19Speaker 1: there for you. But we always remind you, it is
- 19:21Speaker 1: not only... in emergencies, if you're looking to upgrade, if
- 19:25Speaker 1: you are looking to do something different in your space,
- 19:27Speaker 1: at your home, at your business, they can come in.
- 19:30Speaker 1: They can do that as well. They can be there
- 19:31Speaker 1: from the very beginning, or if you need them to
- 19:34Speaker 1: come in, step in because, well, the job was not
- 19:37Speaker 1: done by somebody else, right? The first time they'll always
- 19:40Speaker 1: be there for you.
- 19:41Speaker 6: Go to centralplumbing.org today. Sorry, centralplumbing, centralplumbing.org. The Payne family
- 19:46Speaker 6: has been doing it a long time. Third generation plumbing
- 19:49Speaker 6: company for a long time here in the greater Baton
- 19:51Speaker 6: Rouge area, but now Baton Rouge, Lafayette. So if you
- 19:53Speaker 6: have a problem, maybe you have a job, maybe it's
- 19:57Speaker 6: at your house, you're extended on, put an extra powder room,
- 19:59Speaker 6: maybe you want a tankless water heater, whatever it is,
- 20:02Speaker 6: they are the experts. There's nothing too big, nothing too
- 20:04Speaker 6: small for Central Plumbing. Go check them out, centralplumbing.org.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Off the Bench with Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Presented by Community Steel. all right welcome back in otb
- 20:56Speaker 1: i'm gonna have our guy stanford steve join us here
- 21:02Speaker 1: coming up in the next segment looking forward to that
- 21:04Speaker 1: conversation as we said he is um On game day,
- 21:09Speaker 1: he was here this weekend, so looking forward to some
- 21:11Speaker 1: of that insight from our guys. Stand for Steve Coughlin.
- 21:16Speaker 1: This weekend, as we've talked about, you've got to get back.
- 21:19Speaker 1: You've got to refocus if you're the LSU Tigers. You
- 21:22Speaker 1: are a 35.5 point favorite against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
- 21:27Speaker 1: The total in that game, 55.5. Now, this Louisiana Tech team, again,
- 21:32Speaker 1: they did score 80 points against Northwestern State. Northwestern State,
- 21:36Speaker 1: one of the worst teams, maybe the worst team in
- 21:38Speaker 1: the FCS, but still 80 points is going to be
- 21:40Speaker 1: 80 points. And remember, this game was not pretty last year.
- 21:46Speaker 1: It was, in fact, it was ugly. These are the
- 21:49Speaker 1: kind of games that I want to see LSU go
- 21:54Speaker 1: full throttle and just take care of business. And I'm
- 21:59Speaker 1: not sitting here saying like, oh, we've got to cover
- 22:00Speaker 1: the spread. I really don't care about the spread. But
- 22:03Speaker 1: Go out there and do what you're supposed to do
- 22:05Speaker 1: against a team that you're a 35.5 point favorite against.
- 22:10Speaker 1: And look, Louisiana Tech, it looks like they're going to
- 22:12Speaker 1: be a good team in the Sun Belt this year,
- 22:13Speaker 1: so it's not throwing shade at the dogs. But you're LSU, right?
- 22:18Speaker 1: You're supposed to go handle business early and often in
- 22:21Speaker 1: a game like this. You're supposed to go out there,
- 22:24Speaker 1: impose your will on an inferior opponent, and leave no doubt.
- 22:29Speaker 1: That's what LSU is. has to do in this game.
- 22:33Speaker 1: If they do that, if they go out there and
- 22:36Speaker 1: it's the same execution, it's the same focus, it's the
- 22:39Speaker 1: same mentality, because you're going to have a lively Tiger Stadium.
- 22:44Speaker 1: It might not be the pregame festivities that it was
- 22:47Speaker 1: against Clemson, but when LSU wins, Tiger fans show up.
- 22:52Speaker 1: They're going to be there. It's not going to be
- 22:54Speaker 1: a situation where the upper decks are completely empty. Now,
- 22:59Speaker 1: will people leave early? Maybe so if you get up.
- 23:02Speaker 1: We know. We saw that against Clemson. But to start
- 23:06Speaker 1: the game, to get the energy that you need, I
- 23:08Speaker 1: expect it to be a full stadium. People are fired
- 23:11Speaker 1: up to go. They've been waiting for this moment. And
- 23:13Speaker 1: all I want to see is LSU in this game
- 23:18Speaker 1: act like LSU, play like LSU, and execute like LSU,
- 23:21Speaker 1: which this staff, I feel like, already has done more
- 23:26Speaker 1: by making it a point of emphasis to say, you
- 23:29Speaker 1: haven't done anything. Go be about your business.
- 23:34Speaker 6: Yeah, these games are, okay, so from a player perspective,
- 23:39Speaker 6: these games aren't fun. These are games that you don't
- 23:43Speaker 6: want to play.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I'm with you. Because there's no stakes. The in-state used
- 23:50Speaker 1: to help a little bit. When we played against Louisiana Tech,
- 23:55Speaker 1: my best friend played for Louisiana Tech. Katie's first cousin
- 23:58Speaker 1: played for Louisiana Tech. Her dad played for Louisiana Tech.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Her uncle played for Louisiana Tech. My mom, her mom.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Everybody went to Louisiana Tech. So for me, there was
- 24:08Speaker 1: some added intrigue in the matchup, if you will. But
- 24:12Speaker 1: I know that's not for everybody. And I understand what
- 24:14Speaker 1: you're saying because when we played ULL in college, it's
- 24:16Speaker 1: like you think in your mind that you're doing all
- 24:19Speaker 1: the things to prepare for the game like you're playing
- 24:21Speaker 1: against Florida.
- 24:23Speaker 6: There's a subconscious that takes over. You can spend the
- 24:27Speaker 6: same amount of hours. You can do the same routines.
- 24:31Speaker 6: And you wake up, put your feet on the ground,
- 24:34Speaker 6: do your ninja get up every single morning, and you
- 24:37Speaker 6: convince yourself to go do it. But it's one of
- 24:42Speaker 6: those things where it's human nature, right? It's hard to mentally, spiritually,
- 24:47Speaker 6: get yourself as prepared for games that don't really have
- 24:52Speaker 6: the stakes involved.
- 24:53Speaker 1: And look, this is... Football's Football is football.
- 25:01Speaker 6: The guys are going to prepare and have the energy,
- 25:04Speaker 6: and that's the job. This week really shows you what
- 25:07Speaker 6: a coaching staff is made of right here, how prepared
- 25:11Speaker 6: you can get your team for these games, especially coming
- 25:14Speaker 6: off of a butt whipping, and a week before, you're
- 25:18Speaker 6: going to go up to Oxford. This is a coach's
- 25:21Speaker 6: game this week. How well prepared, how mentally ready, and
- 25:26Speaker 6: from all accounts from what I'm hearing, it sounds like
- 25:28Speaker 6: they're doing everything The right way, but certainly from a
- 25:30Speaker 6: player standpoint, it's a can't win, it's a no-win situation, right?
- 25:35Speaker 6: This is, you do have to go and execute, and
- 25:38Speaker 6: that's all it's about. You got to execute your plays,
- 25:40Speaker 6: you got to execute your X's and O's, because, you know,
- 25:42Speaker 6: this is, and it's no disrespect. Again, it's just like,
- 25:46Speaker 6: it's not a game that is going to carry stakes
- 25:49Speaker 6: for you down the road, right? So that turns it into,
- 25:53Speaker 6: by definition, it turns it into a no-win situation, right?
- 25:57Speaker 1: You can only lose in this game.
- 25:59Speaker 6: Because if you beat them by 50 or 60, it's, oh,
- 26:03Speaker 6: that's what you should have done.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Beat them by 20, that was a bad game.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 1: You stink.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 26:10Speaker 6: So it's like you've got to go and execute, and
- 26:11Speaker 6: you've got to get yourself mentally right. You've got to
- 26:13Speaker 6: get yourself mentally ready.
- 26:14Speaker 1: And it's tough to do. It's not easy.
- 26:18Speaker 3: It is.
- 26:18Speaker 6: And we certainly didn't do great in 07. We didn't
- 26:22Speaker 6: do great in these types of games.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Speak for yourself. I had an 87-yard touchdown. Against Louisiana Tech, sir.
- 26:28Speaker 1: You were exhausted. You're still tired. Still breathing hard. The
- 26:31Speaker 1: most tired. Remember Larry Porter coming up to me and
- 26:39Speaker 1: being like, hey, you got 100. You're done. I'm like, oh,
- 26:40Speaker 1: thank God. I'll take Antolin. We didn't do very good. Antolin,
- 26:43Speaker 1: we played horrible. You just got sacked again. Right now.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Cool.
- 26:48Speaker 1: I got my eye gouged out. Golly. That wasn't bad.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Don't do that. Never had the back of my eyeball touched.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Don't do that. Don't play like we did in the
- 27:00Speaker 1: Superdome in 2007. Sleepy, to say the least. All right.
- 27:04Speaker 1: We are going to step away, and when we come back,
- 27:06Speaker 1: we are going to be joined by Stanford Steve right
- 27:09Speaker 1: here on OTB.
- 27:10Speaker 5: Off the bench.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Go to bathfitter.com. Bathfitter.com. Bathfitter of Baton Rouge. If you're
- 27:16Speaker 1: looking to upgrade, if you want to get Beyonce, if
- 27:19Speaker 1: you want to have that done in as little as
- 27:21Speaker 1: one day, that's right, one day. Not weeks, not a
- 27:24Speaker 1: month worth of work, ripping everything up and just making
- 27:28Speaker 1: a mess. And no, they're going to be able to
- 27:30Speaker 1: give you a brand new look in your bathroom at
- 27:33Speaker 1: your home in one single day. So have them out,

- 27:43Speaker 1: going to be executed again so fast. And you don't
- 27:46Speaker 1: have to deal with all the hassle, all the mess
- 27:48Speaker 1: of this huge overhaul construction. Go to bathfitter.com. That's right.

- 28:25Speaker 3: Off the Bench with Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn, presented
- 28:28Speaker 3: by Community Steel.
- 28:33Speaker 1: All right, welcome back in. OTB here on this Tuesday morning,
- 28:38Speaker 1: live from the Raising Cane studio. Going to go now
- 28:42Speaker 1: to our guy, Stanford Steve Coughlin, who joins us. Fresh
- 28:46Speaker 1: off a appearance in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, of course. Stanford
- 28:50Speaker 1: City Sports Center with SVP on college game day every
- 28:53Speaker 1: single weekend. A man that's got more jobs than I do. Steve,
- 28:57Speaker 1: what's up, brother? How we doing?
- 28:59Speaker 2: What's up, fellas?
- 29:00Speaker 3: Feels like yesterday being down there. A couple naps the
- 29:04Speaker 3: last couple days to get back and recover. With all
- 29:07Speaker 3: the boys treating you like royalty down there, as only
- 29:09Speaker 3: you guys could do. So, yeah, head off to Austin tomorrow,
- 29:13Speaker 3: and we're cranked up and right in the middle of
- 29:15Speaker 3: this whole deal.
- 29:17Speaker 1: How many times did you eat Phil's while you were here, Steve?
- 29:20Speaker 2: Too many. Too many.
- 29:23Speaker 3: And then you add on it for dinner, you know,
- 29:25Speaker 3: a walk-on supper club collabo.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 29:30Speaker 3: As Booger McFarlane texted me when he saw me on
- 29:33Speaker 3: game day Saturday with a golf towel around my neck,
- 29:36Speaker 3: he said, you just have butter and spices and garlic.
- 29:40Speaker 3: inside you running all through you. You're doing all right.
- 29:43Speaker 3: And that was 100% true as Booger would only know.
- 29:46Speaker 1: No doubt about it. So, Steve, you've been to a
- 29:49Speaker 1: ton of games in Tiger Stadium. You've seen this team
- 29:53Speaker 1: at some of its biggest moments. But I wanted to
- 29:55Speaker 1: have you on just to maybe describe what you saw
- 29:58Speaker 1: on Saturday. The build-up, not only on Saturday, but obviously
- 30:01Speaker 1: y'all get here earlier in the week, like you mentioned,
- 30:04Speaker 1: and you kind of see the build-up to what Saturday is.
- 30:07Speaker 1: You see the game there in Tiger Stadium. Just for you,
- 30:10Speaker 1: somebody that's been to so many big moments in that stadium,
- 30:13Speaker 1: how did Saturday compare?
- 30:15Speaker 2: Well, I think it starts prior, Jacob.
- 30:18Speaker 3: You know, like with Lane and this idea and talking
- 30:21Speaker 3: to people around him and and seeing where he's come from. Like,
- 30:26Speaker 3: I go back to the old Pete Carroll days at USC, right?
- 30:30Speaker 3: When Pete had Snoop coming to practice and Will Ferrell,
- 30:33Speaker 3: and then they started the competition Wednesdays. And to hear
- 30:37Speaker 3: Pete talk about it, he wanted it to just be
- 30:40Speaker 3: as chaotic and distracting. Like, no coach ever wants to
- 30:44Speaker 3: hear the word distraction, right? But Lane has adopted this
- 30:47Speaker 3: thing of we want it all leading up to it.
- 30:50Speaker 3: So then the game– is just normal. We get in
- 30:53Speaker 3: our lane, we get behind the car, and we're just
- 30:55Speaker 3: going because we've overcome and seen everything in the days
- 30:59Speaker 3: leading up to it. And I think it's a new
- 31:02Speaker 3: school approach. It's different for people that are buttoned up. And,
- 31:05Speaker 3: you know, in high school, I didn't, you know, our
- 31:07Speaker 3: coach didn't even let us have music in the locker
- 31:09Speaker 3: room before, right? It was dead silent. And boy, is
- 31:12Speaker 3: this the opposite case with seeing what music is like
- 31:15Speaker 3: at practice and all that. So I think it's exactly
- 31:18Speaker 3: what Lane wants. I think, you know, when you go
- 31:20Speaker 3: back to hear him talk about why he wanted this
- 31:23Speaker 3: job and what comes with it, it doesn't get bigger
- 31:26Speaker 3: than anything in Baton Rouge. There's no parameters. Everyone's going
- 31:29Speaker 3: to be there to help you out to go that
- 31:31Speaker 3: extra mile. So I thought it was a huge success
- 31:35Speaker 3: when you.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Look at what it was.
- 31:37Speaker 3: You know, now we have the postgame sound about what
- 31:39Speaker 3: the pregame was like. And during that and knowing that
- 31:43Speaker 3: the engine was revved up and ready to go.
- 31:47Speaker 2: So that's the way Lane's going.
- 31:48Speaker 1: To do it.
- 31:49Speaker 2: It's a huge success.
- 31:50Speaker 3: I think everybody's on board for it because it's a
- 31:52Speaker 3: huge change to what they had in the previous era.
- 31:56Speaker 3: And there's no argument arguing with it right now.
- 32:00Speaker 6: Yeah, Steve, so we saw the clip from halftime or pregame.
- 32:03Speaker 6: It leaked, and so you saw it. I think it
- 32:04Speaker 6: was a little different side of Lane than anybody kind
- 32:07Speaker 6: of expected. And there's been so much noise leading up.
- 32:10Speaker 6: I mean, all the noise. It's off-season talk. So much
- 32:14Speaker 6: is happening. College football is changing, and certainly Lane's been
- 32:16Speaker 6: the tip of the spear on that. But we've gone
- 32:19Speaker 6: back and watched this game film, and it's one of
- 32:22Speaker 6: the more impressive week ones of a college football, like execution-wise.
- 32:25Speaker 1: And, of course, it showed itself on the college scoreboard.
- 32:27Speaker 1: It got us arguing yesterday. Is LSU that good? Is
- 32:30Speaker 1: Clemson that bad?
- 32:31Speaker 6: But from an execution standpoint, man, they were as prepared
- 32:34Speaker 6: as any team that I've seen to start out a season.
- 32:37Speaker 6: Is that a feel and kind of you watching it
- 32:39Speaker 6: back and thinking about the game? What was your, what
- 32:42Speaker 6: did you take away from the actual gameplay on the field?
- 32:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I think there's some cleaning up to do on
- 32:47Speaker 3: the offensive line for sure with Sam, but that's why
- 32:50Speaker 3: you got Sam Leavitt, right?
- 32:51Speaker 2: To get you out of those instances.
- 32:55Speaker 3: And when you break it down, like being at practice Thursday,
- 32:58Speaker 3: it's like, Yeah, they're ready.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I mean, Lane was as calm as there was.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Charlie's running everything on one side, you know, with the offense,
- 33:06Speaker 3: and Blake's doing everything on the other side with the defense,
- 33:08Speaker 3: and Lane's checking in on both sides, and then he
- 33:10Speaker 3: sets up his havoc deals, you know, whether it's two-minute
- 33:13Speaker 3: or field goals at the end. Like, it was exactly
- 33:17Speaker 3: what they wanted. I thought there was a real, you know, everybody,
- 33:19Speaker 3: I mean, you guys know what the LSU run game
- 33:22Speaker 3: was the last two years. I thought that was a
- 33:25Speaker 3: mindset that was going to be you know, take it
- 33:28Speaker 3: to the woodshed Saturday night.
- 33:30Speaker 2: And, you know, there was so much creativity.
- 33:32Speaker 3: I think that's another thing you got to see where
- 33:35Speaker 3: guys don't know where they're going on split zone. And
- 33:37Speaker 3: then that sets up the play action. But you also
- 33:39Speaker 3: have that ultimate weapon at Sam Levin at quarterback. The
- 33:43Speaker 3: one thing I will say, and it's, you know, it's eerie.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Like last year we were at Oklahoma, Michigan, and it
- 33:50Speaker 3: was like the first, you know, the coming out party
- 33:52Speaker 3: for John Mateer.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Yep.
- 33:54Speaker 3: And Desmond Howard on our show, he was like, I
- 33:56Speaker 3: don't know if this is sustainable. You know, with your
- 34:00Speaker 3: quarterback running around there, because now you're getting in the
- 34:02Speaker 3: SEC play. And we know what the physicality is every
- 34:05Speaker 3: week in that conference. So you saw what ended up
- 34:08Speaker 3: happening with Levin on a freak thing with a helmet,
- 34:10Speaker 3: but that affected.
- 34:11Speaker 2: The whole year.
- 34:12Speaker 3: But I keep saying, Oklahoma still went to the playoff
- 34:16Speaker 3: with one good thumb. So I would be confident in
- 34:20Speaker 3: knowing that Lane has coached in this league, He knows
- 34:22Speaker 3: what you need to do to succeed. He knows when to,
- 34:25Speaker 3: you know, put the foot on the gas and then pull,
- 34:28Speaker 3: you know, your rest guys. And that was the thing
- 34:31Speaker 3: that was eye-opening. I wasn't sure how he was going
- 34:33Speaker 3: to go with the pace. At Ole Miss, he sort
- 34:35Speaker 3: of slowed down, you know, this new green dot era.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Coaches are different about how they go about, you know,
- 34:41Speaker 3: going play to play or after, you know, a first down.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Do we want to go fast or slow? So I thought, again,
- 34:47Speaker 3: they were in total control. The O-line was on the
- 34:50Speaker 3: same page. There weren't a lot of hiccups. The first turnover,
- 34:53Speaker 3: it's a tip ball.
- 34:54Speaker 2: What are you going to do?
- 34:55Speaker 3: And they just played the next play, and they're up
- 34:57Speaker 3: two scores, you know, the next two possessions. So as
- 35:02Speaker 3: effective as you could see, and it was funny on
- 35:05Speaker 3: the field, you know, after they go up, was it
- 35:09Speaker 3: 7-3 or 10-3, and that first third down where Ross
- 35:12Speaker 3: gets to pick six, Joey Galloway's right next to me,
- 35:15Speaker 3: I'm like, Joey, this Vazina kid, this is the loudest
- 35:17Speaker 3: third down he's going to ever have in his life.
- 35:21Speaker 3: And sure enough, Blake dials it up, and it's a
- 35:23Speaker 3: pick six, and it's off and running from there. So, again,
- 35:27Speaker 3: your idea, Matt, saying they had them ready to go,
- 35:31Speaker 3: I mean, you just saw it with execution, to your point.
- 35:33Speaker 3: It was a beautiful thing because, again, it's week one.
- 35:36Speaker 3: You don't know how you're going to come out. We
- 35:37Speaker 3: saw the difference in Florida State and SMU last night. But, yeah,
- 35:41Speaker 3: a huge, huge success, and that's a tribute to that
- 35:43Speaker 3: coaching staff.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Catching up with our guy Stanford Steve here on OTB. Now,
- 35:48Speaker 1: I do want to go quickly to the other sideline
- 35:50Speaker 1: because as good as LSU looked, Clemson looked that bad.
- 35:54Speaker 1: And for a long time, Clemson, look, they were one
- 35:57Speaker 1: of the standards of college football. And college football changed,
- 36:00Speaker 1: and you either adapt or you retire, like Coach Saban did.
- 36:03Speaker 1: He's like, all right, I've had enough of this. I'm
- 36:04Speaker 1: going to retire. And there's been coaches that have adapted,
- 36:08Speaker 1: and Kirby's adapted, and all these coaches have. And Dabo's
- 36:10Speaker 1: been reluctant to do so. And it's really, as you know,
- 36:13Speaker 1: starting to show up over the last couple of years.
- 36:16Speaker 1: What is Clemson? Can Clemson fix it? Is Clemson over? Like,
- 36:20Speaker 1: where do you think that program is right now?
- 36:24Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a lot of places to go. First off,
- 36:27Speaker 3: I'll go, you know, so I flew home through Atlanta.
- 36:31Speaker 3: So my whole flight home was Clemson people.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:33Speaker 3: So they're just coming up, you know, wounded warrior face. Like,
- 36:36Speaker 3: what are we doing now?
- 36:38Speaker 6: Right.
- 36:38Speaker 2: And it was really interesting to hear multiple.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Clemson fans say, this feels and looks a lot like
- 36:45Speaker 3: Bobby Bowden at the end of Florida State, where the
- 36:48Speaker 3: evaluation process wasn't as thorough as it has been. They
- 36:53Speaker 3: were just looking maybe for stars on recruits and not
- 36:55Speaker 3: doing the homework. And then you get there Saturday night,
- 36:59Speaker 3: and then in person, the difference in team speed was.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Night and day. And then you look at the plan.
- 37:10Speaker 3: I think for LSU, when you play against Blake, you
- 37:14Speaker 3: have to have multiple ways to go about things with pressure.
- 37:17Speaker 3: You know he's going to bring them from all over.
- 37:20Speaker 3: You saw the drop by Ross on the pick six.
- 37:22Speaker 3: You have to have multiple answers for different pressures and
- 37:26Speaker 3: seeing how dialed up Those were, and I even look
- 37:29Speaker 3: at that stuff on defense. When you've got multiple blitzers,
- 37:32Speaker 3: are they running into each other? Do they know exactly
- 37:34Speaker 3: where they go? Witt's just throwing his body all over
- 37:38Speaker 3: the place and just doing it for the team. He
- 37:40Speaker 3: doesn't want the numbers. If his job is to pick
- 37:43Speaker 3: an offensive guard, he's going to go do that. And
- 37:46Speaker 3: I saw guys give up TFLs in order for sacrifice
- 37:49Speaker 3: for their teammates to do the defense the right way.
- 37:52Speaker 3: But getting back to Clemson, you have two NFL receivers,
- 37:55Speaker 3: and there was not a plan to get those guys involved.
- 37:59Speaker 3: Use the pressure against them, right? Screens, whatever it is, misdirection,
- 38:05Speaker 3: and you just didn't have that.
- 38:06Speaker 2: And to see.
- 38:07Speaker 3: Dabble go back to Chad Morris, who had success at Clemson, what,
- 38:11Speaker 3: 10 years ago?
- 38:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:13Speaker 3: And then you look at where he went since then. Um,
- 38:16Speaker 3: that was an eyeopening hire. Uh, Tom Allen, you know,
- 38:19Speaker 3: had all those NFL guys, you know, on a team
- 38:22Speaker 3: last year that I thought was going to be in
- 38:24Speaker 3: the college football playoff. And, you know, there wasn't, there
- 38:27Speaker 3: weren't many answers for the misdirection in the, in the
- 38:29Speaker 3: tempo LSU. So yeah, it's, I mean, it's one game.
- 38:33Speaker 3: You're not playing in the sec. I don't think the
- 38:36Speaker 3: ACC is close to the sec this year.
- 38:39Speaker 2: I think it's Miami and everybody else. Yeah.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Uh, so, you know, Clemson could get back to winning games,
- 38:43Speaker 3: but they got to tighten it up that, I mean,
- 38:45Speaker 3: the lack of playmaking ability at the quarterback position has really,
- 38:50Speaker 3: really hurt them since Trevor's gone.
- 38:53Speaker 6: Steve, headed down to Austin, Texas this weekend for the
- 38:56Speaker 6: huge matchup. Steve, you've seen literally the best there is
- 39:00Speaker 6: to give when it comes to college football, the atmosphere.
- 39:03Speaker 1: You were in the middle of the best there is
- 39:05Speaker 1: to offer.
- 39:07Speaker 6: I want to know a little bit like first part
- 39:09Speaker 6: of the question, like how does LSU in this game
- 39:11Speaker 6: to experience compared to some of the best around the
- 39:13Speaker 6: country from an atmosphere standpoint? And then kind of what
- 39:16Speaker 6: you're looking for with a huge matchup down in Austin, Texas.
- 39:20Speaker 3: I met, I mentioned the Miami football team and the ACC,
- 39:23Speaker 3: and I think that's the largest gap from any team
- 39:25Speaker 3: to the next team in the power Four. LSU as
- 39:29Speaker 3: a hosting city is just about that good.
- 39:32Speaker 2: There's no doubt they're the one seed. They're the one seed.
- 39:36Speaker 3: The overall number one seed, if you want to talk
- 39:38Speaker 3: March Madness, that style, it doesn't compare because it's a
- 39:43Speaker 3: lead-up and everybody wants.
- 39:44Speaker 2: You to experience it. It's the people that's there.
- 39:49Speaker 3: With Brandon and his conglomerate at walk-ons and supper club
- 39:53Speaker 3: and Piazza and his back room at, at Phil's like,
- 39:56Speaker 3: there's no better hospitality than there is with LSU. And
- 40:00Speaker 3: now we go to Austin where, you know, Austin likes
- 40:03Speaker 3: to show you what they have on the table too.
- 40:07Speaker 2: So it's, it's good. The issue is it's going to
- 40:09Speaker 2: be hotter.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Than it was in VR.
- 40:12Speaker 2: So I don't know, man.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Like you got to eliminate layers of clothes, but you
- 40:16Speaker 3: also got to have stuff that not showing up on TV.
- 40:19Speaker 3: It was funny hearing Herbie tell Pat that he made
- 40:22Speaker 3: a rookie move going with a light blue blazer on
- 40:25Speaker 3: game day Saturday.
- 40:27Speaker 2: It looks like he got bombarded with water balloons.
- 40:29Speaker 3: On his back sitting in the chair.
- 40:32Speaker 2: So we're going back.
- 40:34Speaker 3: Like, is there extra fans or those AC units or
- 40:37Speaker 3: those mist machines that Lewis and the LSU equipment guys got?
- 40:41Speaker 3: Maybe we can steal one of those. But I'm sure
- 40:42Speaker 3: they'll take care of us in Austin. But really, really
- 40:46Speaker 3: fired up for that matchup to see– You know, watching
- 40:49Speaker 3: Texas back a little bit, it looks like Sark's got
- 40:52Speaker 3: all his tricks up his sleeve again with all his
- 40:54Speaker 3: shifts and motions, whereas it looked like he had to
- 40:57Speaker 3: break it all down last year for Arch to try
- 40:59Speaker 3: and simplify things. And being on the field in Columbus
- 41:03Speaker 3: last year for this game, I'll never forget the first
- 41:06Speaker 3: play of the season. You know, they were, you know,
- 41:10Speaker 3: sprint right option to get Arch a quick completion, get
- 41:15Speaker 3: his feet on the ground, and he dirtied it.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:18Speaker 3: You know, six yard out. And then that just set
- 41:20Speaker 3: the tone for the whole day with what Matt Patricia does.
- 41:22Speaker 3: So really excited to see the matchups in Texas is
- 41:26Speaker 3: definitely better with the weapons that they acquired in the
- 41:29Speaker 3: off season too. So it sets up for an awesome matchup.
- 41:32Speaker 1: Steve, you're the man. We always appreciate the time. I've
- 41:34Speaker 1: got a feeling we're going to be seeing you maybe
- 41:36Speaker 1: a time or two, not only on game day, because
- 41:39Speaker 1: obviously coming up week three Ole Miss LSU, but in
- 41:42Speaker 1: Baton Rouge as well. with the way the season looks
- 41:45Speaker 1: like it's shaping up with the home schedule LSU has.
- 41:47Speaker 1: So we appreciate it and look forward to our next conversation, brother.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Is Mr. Flynn going to make an appearance in Oxford?
- 41:54Speaker 1: That's a good question. This dude doesn't even go to
- 41:56Speaker 1: home games, Steve. He's not going to Oxford.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I was looking for him, man.
- 42:00Speaker 1: No, I'll be there. I'll be there.
- 42:02Speaker 2: I know you will.
- 42:03Speaker 1: I'll be there. All right. Appreciate it, brother.
- 42:05Speaker 2: I appreciate you guys.
- 42:05Speaker 1: All right, there he is, Stanford Steve. Good enough to
- 42:07Speaker 1: join us here on OTB. You just got called out.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Are you going?
- 42:11Speaker 1: I did get called out. Are you going? To Oxford?
- 42:13Speaker 2: Yes.
- 42:13Speaker 1: I don't have a ticket. I think Matt Flynn can
- 42:16Speaker 1: get a ticket to an LSU football game. Ticket to
- 42:18Speaker 1: the Clemson game. You didn't ask. Golly. All right. He's
- 42:25Speaker 1: making me mad. We'll take a break. More OTB when
- 42:27Speaker 1: we come back. Off the bench. All right. Go to getgordon.com.

- 44:11Speaker 1: you know. You scared? I mean, whoa, I can go
- 44:16Speaker 1: by myself.
- 44:18Speaker 6: I pack up the whole fam, go find a hotel, and,
- 44:21Speaker 6: you know, an hour and a half away from the stadium.
- 44:23Speaker 1: What about Alondra and Tay-Tay? OTV trip. I'll be there. That,
- 44:28Speaker 1: I mean, is... Is that on the table? I don't know.
- 44:32Speaker 1: What do you think? Not everybody at once. I mean,
- 44:38Speaker 1: y'all know I'm down. You're just going to have to
- 44:43Speaker 1: bring some pallets to sleep on the hotel floor that
- 44:45Speaker 1: I got the room. Bring some sleeping bags. Slumber party!
- 44:49Speaker 6: I think the Chances of that happening are about as
- 44:53Speaker 6: real as Marcus Freeman's hairline.
- 44:56Speaker 1: Whoa! Dang, Marcus Freeman catches shows. Low chance is what
- 45:00Speaker 1: you're saying. What? Low chance is what you're saying. Did
- 45:03Speaker 1: y'all see that? Oh, he's so committed to it. Another
- 45:06Speaker 1: one from the game. I respect it. They're not even close.
- 45:10Speaker 1: I really like Marcus, and Marcus is just all put together, smart, intelligent,
- 45:15Speaker 1: handsome guy. So handsome. Like, man, just put on a, like,
- 45:19Speaker 1: just shave it. Shave it or put on a hat.
- 45:22Speaker 1: He would look okay with his hair shaved. It's not
- 45:24Speaker 1: that bad either. No, his hairline is not that bad.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Like he's adding the extra two inches. I'm ready for
- 45:29Speaker 1: a rain game. It's not even two inches. It's like
- 45:32Speaker 1: barely anything. Yeah, he doesn't need it.
- 45:34Speaker 7: I'm ready for a rain game where it like runs down.
- 45:37Speaker 1: Yeah, and it looks like Sharpie.
- 45:39Speaker 2: It does.
- 45:40Speaker 1: And it's bad. Maybe it is. And it doesn't look good.
- 45:43Speaker 1: And look, I get it.
- 45:44Speaker 6: In a normal setting with warm lighting in a living room,
- 45:47Speaker 6: you probably can't tell. But in stadium lights, yeah, you're
- 45:51Speaker 6: going to tell. It's kind of like sitting here under
- 45:53Speaker 6: these lights.
- 45:55Speaker 1: He should change.
- 45:56Speaker 6: He got fixed that. You're a handsome fella. No, I
- 45:59Speaker 6: don't respect how you blamed your team for not playing
- 46:02Speaker 6: in the bowl game. Don't respect that. I don't respect
- 46:03Speaker 6: Notre Dame at all, but I respect you. But not
- 46:06Speaker 6: your hairline. Look, this is coming from me. Look at this.
- 46:10Speaker 6: My girl's called these bunny ears the other day.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Yeah, she did. On air. Hour three, coming up.
- 46:16Speaker 4: Oh, wait, my bad.
- 46:17Speaker 1: My bad, my bad. I was like, what? I don't
- 46:18Speaker 1: know what I'm doing.
- 46:19Speaker 6: I thought I had a little bit more time for
- 46:22Speaker 6: this bunny hair story.
- 46:23Speaker 1: I was like, you were trying to cut because of
- 46:24Speaker 1: Flynn's hairline?
- 46:25Speaker 4: No, that's on me.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Off the bench.
- 46:27Speaker 6: I didn't know.
- 46:27Speaker 1: She said, don't talk about my guy, Marcus. Cutting this
