- 0:01Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to radioi's Children's Story Hour. As a reminder,
- 0:06Speaker 1: RADIOI is a reading service intended for people who are
- 0:10Speaker 1: blind or have other disabilities that make it difficult to
- 0:14Speaker 1: read printed material. Today we will be reading several children's
- 0:20Speaker 1: books about a special time of year. It's that time
- 0:24Speaker 1: of year called back to school Days. Your reader today
- 0:29Speaker 1: is Patty. We will start with the book Arthur's Back
- 0:34Speaker 1: to School Day. The author is Lilian Hoban. It was
- 0:40Speaker 1: published by Harper Trophy, a division of Harper Collins publisher
- 0:47Speaker 1: and it was published in nineteen ninety six. From the
- 0:53Speaker 1: back cover, bring there's the school bell. Summer is over
- 0:59Speaker 1: and it's back to school for Arthur and Violet and
- 1:04Speaker 1: all of their friends. This year, the day is more
- 1:07Speaker 1: exciting than ever. An adventure filled bus ride, a missing snack,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and his little sister's secret surprise make it a day
- 1:18Speaker 1: Arthur will never forget. And if any of you have
- 1:22Speaker 1: ever read any of the other Arthur books, you know
- 1:25Speaker 1: that Arthur is a monkey, So that means his little sister,
- 1:30Speaker 1: Violet is also a monkey. So let's begin. It was
- 1:36Speaker 1: the first day of school. Arthur and Violet were waiting
- 1:41Speaker 1: for the school bus, they had new lunch boxes. Arthur's
- 1:47Speaker 1: was purple and red, Violets was pink and yellow. I
- 1:53Speaker 1: love my lunch box, said Violet. I love the little
- 1:58Speaker 1: plastic box for snack. See the illustration here shows the
- 2:04Speaker 1: two little monkeys, of course, dressed up in clothes, standing
- 2:09Speaker 1: outside next to a fence, waiting for the school bus
- 2:13Speaker 1: to arrive, and Arthur has his purple and red lunch
- 2:17Speaker 1: box and Violet has her pink and yellow lunchbox. I
- 2:23Speaker 1: put some baseball cards in mine so I can trade.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I put a secret surprise in mine, said Violet. If
- 2:33Speaker 1: you put it in yourself, you can't be surprised, said Arthur.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Yes I can, said Violet. I closed my eyes when
- 2:41Speaker 1: I put it in. Norman and his dog, Bubbles came
- 2:47Speaker 1: down the road. Bubbles was carrying Norman's lunchbox. Look, Arthur,
- 2:55Speaker 1: said Violet. Norman's lunchbox is just like you. So now
- 3:02Speaker 1: we have an illustration of Norman joining Violet and Arthur
- 3:08Speaker 1: at the bus stop, and the little dog, Bubbles is
- 3:12Speaker 1: carrying Norman's lunchbox, which is purple and red just like Arthur's. Hey,
- 3:20Speaker 1: Arthur called Norman, do you want to trade baseball cards?
- 3:24Speaker 1: I got doubles on some good ones. Let's see, said Arthur.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Norman took his baseball cards out of his lunchbox. Arthur
- 3:34Speaker 1: took out his baseball cards too, And there we see
- 3:39Speaker 1: the illustration of the two little monkey boys, and they
- 3:42Speaker 1: have their lunch boxes open on the ground, and they've
- 3:46Speaker 1: got baseball cards scattered out in front. Here comes the
- 3:51Speaker 1: school bus, said Violet. Arthur quickly put his baseball cards
- 3:56Speaker 1: back in his snack box. Arthur and Violet got on
- 4:00Speaker 1: the bus. Norman came running and got on too. Bubbles
- 4:06Speaker 1: ran after him. No dogs aloud on the bus, said
- 4:10Speaker 1: the driver. He shut the door and drove on way.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Yelled Norman. Bubbles has my lunch box. I can't stop here,
- 4:21Speaker 1: said the driver. Look, said Violet. Bubbles is running after
- 4:26Speaker 1: the bus. All the children stood up to look. Here
- 4:33Speaker 1: we see the big yellows school bus full of little
- 4:39Speaker 1: monkey children went on their way to school. And behind
- 4:43Speaker 1: the bus is the dog Bubbles chasing after it, carrying
- 4:48Speaker 1: one of the red and purple lunch boxes. Come on, Bubbles,
- 4:53Speaker 1: shouted Arthur, you can do it. Yay Bubbles. Everyone cheered,
- 5:00Speaker 1: Remember your safety rules, called the driver. No standing or
- 5:06Speaker 1: shouting on the school bus. Oh no, cried Norman. Everyone,
- 5:12Speaker 1: everything is falling out of my lunch box. The illustration
- 5:17Speaker 1: here shows all the children still standing up and looking
- 5:22Speaker 1: out the windows and bubbles behind the bus, and sure enough,
- 5:27Speaker 1: the lunch box has opened up and everything has spilled
- 5:30Speaker 1: out of it. All the children now crowded back to
- 5:36Speaker 1: the back of the bus to see Safety rules, yelled
- 5:41Speaker 1: the driver. Please go back to your seats. There goes
- 5:45Speaker 1: your apple, Norman called Arthur. It's bouncing down the roll.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I didn't have an apple, said Norman. Norman's snack box
- 5:58Speaker 1: just fell in the dirt, said Violet. Let me see,
- 6:02Speaker 1: said Wilma. She stood up on the seat. I can't
- 6:07Speaker 1: see bubbles anymore, said Wilma. Safety rules, Safety rules, yelled
- 6:14Speaker 1: the driver. No standing on the seats. The bus pulled
- 6:21Speaker 1: up in front of the school. Just then Wilma's big
- 6:25Speaker 1: sister Mabel, rode up on her bike. Whose lunch box
- 6:30Speaker 1: is this, she asked? It's mine. It's mine, yelled Norman.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Your lunch was all over the road, said Mabel. But
- 6:40Speaker 1: I put it back in your lunch box. The illustration
- 6:45Speaker 1: here shows another little monkey named Mabel riding a big
- 6:49Speaker 1: red bicycle and there she has one of the red
- 6:53Speaker 1: and purple lunch boxes in her hand. I'm glad you
- 6:59Speaker 1: got your lunchbox back, said the driver, But you kids
- 7:03Speaker 1: need to learn your safety rules. The children got off
- 7:08Speaker 1: the bus. Inside the school, there was a big sign
- 7:12Speaker 1: and it said welcome to the new school year. Good morning,
- 7:21Speaker 1: boys and girls, said a voice over the loud speaker.
- 7:25Speaker 1: This is your principal, mister Adams. All classes please come
- 7:31Speaker 1: to the auditorium. When they got to the auditorium, mister
- 7:36Speaker 1: Adams said, today is the first day of school. It
- 7:41Speaker 1: is important that you learn some safety rules. Can anyone
- 7:46Speaker 1: give me a safety rule for riding on the school
- 7:50Speaker 1: bus and tell me why it is important. The illustration
- 7:55Speaker 1: here shows the principle, mister Adams, standing up in front
- 7:59Speaker 1: of all the little monkey children who are seated out
- 8:03Speaker 1: in the audience. He's talking into a microphone and all
- 8:07Speaker 1: of the little monkey children are watching him. Arthur raised
- 8:13Speaker 1: his hand. No standing on the bus, he said, because
- 8:18Speaker 1: if the bus hits a bump, you might fall and
- 8:21Speaker 1: get hurt. Norman raised his hand. No pushing or shoving,
- 8:27Speaker 1: he said, because you could get knocked down and your
- 8:30Speaker 1: loose tooth might get bunked out. Violet raised her hand.
- 8:37Speaker 1: No dogs on the bus, she said, because the driver
- 8:41Speaker 1: might be scared of dogs and run off the road.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Very good, said mister Adams. Now go back to your
- 8:48Speaker 1: classrooms and write down all those safety rules and any
- 8:53Speaker 1: more you can think of. All the children went to
- 8:57Speaker 1: their new classrooms. Arthur and Norman went to Miss Wilson's class.
- 9:03Speaker 1: On the way, Norman said to Arthur, I can't wait
- 9:08Speaker 1: for recess to trade baseball cards. I can't wait to
- 9:12Speaker 1: eat my snack, said Arthur. I have an apple and
- 9:16Speaker 1: two chocolate chip cookies. The illustration here shows LODs of
- 9:22Speaker 1: the monkey children coming into Miss Wilson's classrooms. In the classroom,
- 9:30Speaker 1: the children drew pictures of a school bus. Arthur colored
- 9:34Speaker 1: his bus black. Under the picture, he wrote all the
- 9:39Speaker 1: safety rules he could think of. Then he yawned that
- 9:44Speaker 1: looked around everyone was still writing. Arthur closed his eyes.
- 9:51Speaker 1: He thought about his snack. He could almost taste the
- 9:57Speaker 1: chocolate chips. A bell rang. Recess, said Miss Wilson. Come on, Arthur,
- 10:06Speaker 1: said Norman. Let's go trade. Arthur and Norman took their
- 10:11Speaker 1: lunch boxes out to the school yard. Arthur called Dot Violet,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I just opened my snack box and found by secret surprise, well,
- 10:24Speaker 1: said Arthur. I know what it is in my snack box,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and it is no surprise. Arthur opened his lunch box
- 10:32Speaker 1: and took out the snack box, but he was surprised.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Instead of chocolate chip cookies, there were cheese crackers under
- 10:43Speaker 1: the baseball cards. Fooy, said Arthur. This is not my snack.
- 10:51Speaker 1: The illustration here shows both Arthur and his friend Norman
- 10:57Speaker 1: opening their lunch boxes and looking in the side at
- 11:00Speaker 1: the small snack boxes. Norman was looking in his lunchbox too.
- 11:08Speaker 1: He held up a dusty apple. I can't eat apples,
- 11:13Speaker 1: he said, I have a loose front tooth. That's my apple,
- 11:18Speaker 1: said Arthur, and that's my lunch. Arthur took the lunch
- 11:22Speaker 1: box from Norman. He looked inside the snackbox. My chocolate
- 11:28Speaker 1: chip cookies are gone, he cried. Bubbles loves chocolate chip cookies,
- 11:35Speaker 1: said Norman. He probably ate them. Oh, no, cried Arthur.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Violet came running over. She was holding something behind her back.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Guess what my secret surprise is, she said. Oh fooy,
- 11:54Speaker 1: said Arthur. I don't want to guess. I just want
- 11:57Speaker 1: a chocolate chip cookie. Guest, you guessed, cried Violet. She
- 12:03Speaker 1: held up two chocolate chip cookies. You can have one
- 12:07Speaker 1: because you guessed. Arthur ate the cookie. He traded baseball
- 12:15Speaker 1: cards with Norman. Then he went back to class and
- 12:20Speaker 1: had a great first day in school. On the way home,
- 12:26Speaker 1: everyone followed the safety rules for writing on the school bus.
- 12:32Speaker 1: And here in the last illustration, we see all the
- 12:36Speaker 1: little monkey children sitting quietly on the school bus. Now
- 12:45Speaker 1: let's read another book. This one's called Puppy and Bear
- 12:49Speaker 1: The First Day at School. This book was written by
- 12:53Speaker 1: Larry Dane Bremner and illustrated by John Bendel Brunello. It
- 13:00Speaker 1: was published by Two Lions Press, New York in twenty seventeen.
- 13:08Speaker 1: From the inside front cover, Puppy is small and loves
- 13:12Speaker 1: to play. Bear is big and feels grumpy. But the
- 13:17Speaker 1: two unlikely friends soon become inseparable. But Bear is suddenly
- 13:24Speaker 1: too busy to play with Puppy. Now that Bear has
- 13:27Speaker 1: started school, is he going to leave Puppy behind forever? Okay,
- 13:34Speaker 1: let's find out. Puppy found Bear sitting alone against an old,
- 13:41Speaker 1: gnarled oak tree and got so excited he ran in
- 13:46Speaker 1: circled maybe we could be friends, he thought. Puppy bounced over.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Who are you? It's none of your bees wax. But
- 13:58Speaker 1: I'm Bear, said Bear. I'm a bear who is bored.
- 14:03Speaker 1: There's nothing to do. We could play, said puppy, showing
- 14:08Speaker 1: the bear his favorite ball. Bear rolled his eyes. You're
- 14:12Speaker 1: just a puppy. You probably can't even catch a ball. Well,
- 14:17Speaker 1: I'm the best chaser in the world, puppy said. He
- 14:21Speaker 1: tossed the ball to show Bear. The illustration here shows
- 14:26Speaker 1: the great Big Bear. Of course, he's wearing clothes sitting
- 14:31Speaker 1: under the old oak tree, and little Puppy, golden in
- 14:36Speaker 1: cover in color, is wearing a red polka dot neckerchief,
- 14:41Speaker 1: and there's the balls right there beside him. Bear reached
- 14:48Speaker 1: out with one paw and caught the ball. Maybe I
- 14:51Speaker 1: can teach you how to catch, he said. After that,
- 14:55Speaker 1: the two played catch the ball and chase and hiding
- 15:00Speaker 1: seat beneath the oak trees until Bear forgot all about
- 15:04Speaker 1: being bored. That summer. Bear helped puppy climb up in
- 15:09Speaker 1: the basket of his bicycle and they sailed down the
- 15:13Speaker 1: dirt lane past the empty schoolhouse. Bear liked to pedal fast.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Puppy liked the way his long ears flapped behind like
- 15:24Speaker 1: bird's wings in the breeze. Sometimes they pretended the giant
- 15:29Speaker 1: boulder was a pirate ship, the SS Rex, and they
- 15:35Speaker 1: were its captain and crew. Puppy liked when the captain
- 15:39Speaker 1: growled walked the plank. Mabey Bear was a good growler,
- 15:45Speaker 1: and no one jumped better than Puppy. Here the illustration
- 15:50Speaker 1: shows Bear standing on top of the boulder, and he's
- 15:55Speaker 1: wearing a pirate hat, and the little puppy is out
- 15:58Speaker 1: on a stick. He's wearing an eye patch, and his
- 16:02Speaker 1: neck kerchief that was tied around his neck is now
- 16:06Speaker 1: tied around his head. When it got really hot, they
- 16:11Speaker 1: waited in the creek, laughing at their rippled reflections. You
- 16:16Speaker 1: look like Bigfoot, said puppy. Bear snorted, well, you look
- 16:22Speaker 1: like big Toe, and I'm going to splash you. I'll
- 16:26Speaker 1: splash you first, shouted Puppy, and soon they were both dripping.
- 16:32Speaker 1: All summer, they met every morning at the old gnarled
- 16:36Speaker 1: oak tree to romp and roam and run until the
- 16:40Speaker 1: sun grew weary and tucked itself in at night. But
- 16:46Speaker 1: one morning Bear didn't come to the tree. Puppy waited
- 16:51Speaker 1: and waited. He wandered through the fields where they played
- 16:55Speaker 1: and looked out from the deck of the ss Rex.
- 17:00Speaker 1: He waited in the creek, but his was the only
- 17:05Speaker 1: reflection in the water. Maybe Bear got lost, he said.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Puppy searched and searched until finally he saw Bear skipping
- 17:18Speaker 1: down the lane. He bounced upside Bear and dropped his ball.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Let's play, he said. Today is the first day of school,
- 17:27Speaker 1: said Bear. I don't want to be late. Puppy tried again.
- 17:31Speaker 1: This time he batted the ball with his paw. A
- 17:35Speaker 1: better hurry, said Bear, and he rushed on. Puppy watched
- 17:42Speaker 1: as Bear dashed into the schoolhouse. Why was Bear in
- 17:48Speaker 1: such a hurry now? The illustration here shows the little
- 17:53Speaker 1: puppy dog sitting on the path that leads up to
- 17:56Speaker 1: the schoolhouse, and all the other animal children are making
- 18:00Speaker 1: their way inside. And there's Bear with his red backpack
- 18:05Speaker 1: straut on his back, and lots of other little animal
- 18:08Speaker 1: children are making their way into the schoolhouse. Puppy watched
- 18:16Speaker 1: at lunchtime as Bear laughed and played games on the playground.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Puppy felt sad now remembering the fun he and Bear
- 18:26Speaker 1: had had all summer long. He watched at the end
- 18:30Speaker 1: of the day as Bear bounded out of the schoolhouse door.
- 18:34Speaker 1: But Bear was so fast he was gone before Puppy
- 18:37Speaker 1: could even find his ball. Didn't Bear want to be
- 18:40Speaker 1: his friend anymore? Puppy slumped away. Puppy tossed his ball
- 18:48Speaker 1: this way and that, but he couldn't throw it as
- 18:52Speaker 1: far as Bear. He played hide and seek by himself,
- 18:57Speaker 1: but Bear knew all the best hiding player walk the blank.
- 19:02Speaker 1: He shouted to himself, trying to growl like Bear, and
- 19:07Speaker 1: he jumped. What fun was that without his captain. Finally,
- 19:14Speaker 1: Puppy curled up beneath the old, gnarled oak tree. Here
- 19:21Speaker 1: the illustration shows that great, big oak tree and the
- 19:26Speaker 1: little puppy dog curled up asleep underneath. What's wrong, Puppy
- 19:34Speaker 1: asked Bear. You didn't play with me today, said puppy.
- 19:39Speaker 1: That's because I am old enough for school now. But
- 19:43Speaker 1: I ran all the way home so we could play
- 19:46Speaker 1: together before it gets dark. Really, ask puppy, Really, said Bear,
- 19:54Speaker 1: and he gave Puppy a big bear hug. We go
- 19:59Speaker 1: to gather like bread and honey. We're best friends, you
- 20:04Speaker 1: and me. The illustration here shows that the big big
- 20:09Speaker 1: Bear has picked up the little puppy in his arms
- 20:13Speaker 1: and giving him a great big hug. Bear picked up
- 20:18Speaker 1: Puppy's ball and tossed it. From then on, Puppy and
- 20:22Speaker 1: Bear met at their tree every day after school. They
- 20:26Speaker 1: raced through the autumn leaves. They took turns walking the
- 20:31Speaker 1: plank and splashing into winter's snowy sea. They went on long,
- 20:37Speaker 1: long bicycle rides with puppies ears flapping in the spring breathe.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Soon it would be summer again, and then fall, and
- 20:45Speaker 1: then Puppy would go to school too. Puppy and Bear
- 20:50Speaker 1: were best friends in and out of days, and in
- 20:55Speaker 1: and out of seasons forever. And here's another book about
- 21:03Speaker 1: going back to school, and it's also a book about dogs.
- 21:09Speaker 1: This book is called Back to Dog Gone School, written
- 21:14Speaker 1: by Amy Schmidt, with photographs by Ron Schmidt. It was
- 21:20Speaker 1: published in twenty sixteen by step Into Reading, Random House publishers.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Back to Dog Gone School, First day, jitters, I am
- 21:37Speaker 1: ready for school. It is my first day. I see
- 21:42Speaker 1: the bus heading my way. Will I like my teacher?
- 21:46Speaker 1: Who will I meet? Do I have my lunch? Will
- 21:50Speaker 1: I get a seat? The photograph here shows a brown
- 21:55Speaker 1: and white dog wearing a knapsack, standing outside waiting for
- 22:01Speaker 1: the bus. The next poem is called dog one school,
- 22:10Speaker 1: hop on the bus. No time to wait. It is
- 22:15Speaker 1: time for school. We cannot be late. The photograph here
- 22:21Speaker 1: of is a big yellow school bus and it shows
- 22:24Speaker 1: three of the windows of the bus. Each window has
- 22:28Speaker 1: a dog looking out the window. One is a brown
- 22:32Speaker 1: and white dog, one is a white, furry, fluffy dog,
- 22:37Speaker 1: and one is a little brown dog, maybe like a docs.
- 22:41Speaker 1: And the next poem is called Teacher's pet. This is Lucy.
- 22:50Speaker 1: She never makes the teacher upset. She can even bark
- 22:56Speaker 1: the alphabet Is she helpful? Oh boy, you bet that
- 23:03Speaker 1: is why she is the teacher's pet. The photograph here
- 23:10Speaker 1: shows a little golden looking dog with a great, big
- 23:15Speaker 1: green apple sitting beside her, and she's sitting on the
- 23:19Speaker 1: teacher's desk. The next poem is called add it up.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Simon lost two blocks, then he lost two more. How
- 23:37Speaker 1: many blocks has Simon lost? The answer must be four.
- 23:44Speaker 1: The photograph here shows a brown dog with big floppy ears,
- 23:49Speaker 1: and he's standing beside a pile of wooden blocks, and
- 23:55Speaker 1: he has lost four of them. Here we go with
- 24:01Speaker 1: another poem called Slurp. Ralphie has a hallway pass to
- 24:08Speaker 1: visit the water fountain. He cannot reach to get a drink,
- 24:15Speaker 1: so he builds a book mountain. Slurp, Slurp, slurp. Here
- 24:22Speaker 1: we see a little orange look colored dog and he
- 24:27Speaker 1: has made a stack of books, probably ten books high,
- 24:32Speaker 1: and he's standing on top so that he can reach
- 24:36Speaker 1: the water fountain for a drink. Next poem is called
- 24:44Speaker 1: Boys with a Belly full of Water. Ralphie sloshes back
- 24:51Speaker 1: to class, but on his way he starts to think, hmmm,
- 24:57Speaker 1: he needs a bathroom pass. Here, little Ralphie is sitting
- 25:02Speaker 1: outside the boy's restroom lunch bunch. We should be eating
- 25:11Speaker 1: lunch right now, but we just sit and stare look
- 25:16Speaker 1: at Sammy's cookies. We hope that he will share the
- 25:22Speaker 1: photograph here shows five dogs all gathered around a lunch table.
- 25:30Speaker 1: There's a beagle and a little tiny brown and white dog.
- 25:36Speaker 1: In the middle is the dog whose name must be
- 25:39Speaker 1: Sammy because he has a stack of cookies sitting right
- 25:45Speaker 1: in front of his nose. Then there's sitting beside Sammy.
- 25:48Speaker 1: To his left is a bulldog. And then there's another
- 25:52Speaker 1: dog that looks a lot like Ralphie, and they're all
- 25:56Speaker 1: staring at Sammy's stack of cookies. Now we have a
- 26:06Speaker 1: poem called D E A R. Each of these letters
- 26:15Speaker 1: has a period after the letter, so it stands for
- 26:20Speaker 1: drop everything and read. Here the photograph shows a beagle
- 26:29Speaker 1: with an open book in front of him and he's reading.
- 26:36Speaker 1: The next poem is called spellbound. Mattie has a word
- 26:42Speaker 1: she is working hard to spell. Is the letter that
- 26:47Speaker 1: she needs A B or C or L. If you
- 26:52Speaker 1: know the missing letter, go ahead and tell now. The
- 26:56Speaker 1: illustration here shows a dog called Mattie's Black Dog, and
- 27:00Speaker 1: she's holding a pencil in her mouth. But on the
- 27:04Speaker 1: table in front of her is a picture that she
- 27:07Speaker 1: has drawn, and it looks an awful lot like a
- 27:11Speaker 1: cat to me. And under the picture she has the
- 27:15Speaker 1: letters at but there's a blank at the beginning, so
- 27:20Speaker 1: she needs to write a C in that blank. Home Free.
- 27:28Speaker 1: The school bell rings to end the day. We all
- 27:33Speaker 1: rush out. It is time to play. The photograph here
- 27:38Speaker 1: shows a small white dog on the playground on one
- 27:43Speaker 1: of the bouncy toys. His tongue is hanging out and
- 27:48Speaker 1: the dog looks very happy. So now let's read this again.
- 27:55Speaker 1: The school bell rings to end the day. We all
- 27:58Speaker 1: rush out. It's time to play, and when we turn
- 28:01Speaker 1: the page, we say, except for Stan, he has to stay.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Stan must have had a few problems at school because
- 28:10Speaker 1: he's inside the classroom and he has written on the
- 28:14Speaker 1: chalkboard I will not eat my homework at least fifty times.
- 28:24Speaker 1: And the last one hanging around. I like to hang
