- 0:04Speaker 1: but hailing from the city of Sands.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Put your hands together for Jamison Welch.
- 0:08Speaker 1: And in this corner, standing at five foot ten, weighing
- 0:11Speaker 1: in at pound and coming to us from his super
- 0:15Speaker 1: secret bunker with no AC in Tucson, Arizona. Put your
- 0:18Speaker 1: hands together for Louis Montemao.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Thank you. Welcome back to the episode of the Next
- 0:29Speaker 2: Company podcast.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Of course, on one half of the show, this is
- 0:32Speaker 1: Jamison as always, I'm joined by Louise.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Louise, what's going on, man, Jamison?
- 0:38Speaker 3: I have very happy to be here recording episode forty nine.
- 0:40Speaker 3: You know, it's actually we're a boxing podcast and I
- 0:43Speaker 3: never have never really gotten into any other sports butt boxing,
- 0:47Speaker 3: but it is a really cool time to be a
- 0:49Speaker 3: sports fan, you know. Shout out to the New York
- 0:51Speaker 3: Knicks winning the NBA Championship last week. It's really cool
- 0:54Speaker 3: seeing all of those celebrations pop up on my feed.
- 0:57Speaker 3: And World Cup time.
- 0:59Speaker 2: You know.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I went to a watch party for the first match
- 1:03Speaker 3: between Mexico and South Africa, so that was a lot
- 1:06Speaker 3: of fun. You know, got invited by some friends and yeah,
- 1:09Speaker 3: it's a you know, I've never been the kind really
- 1:11Speaker 3: to pooh pooh sports, you know, even though I only
- 1:14Speaker 3: care about one and I'm a nerd guy too, But
- 1:16Speaker 3: that communal feeling of coming together watching you know, a match,
- 1:20Speaker 3: a basketball game, booting for your team. You know, I
- 1:22Speaker 3: feel it when I go out to watch Canelo fight
- 1:23Speaker 3: and all the my fellow Mexicans are rooting in the
- 1:26Speaker 3: in the bar there for him. So it's awesome. It's
- 1:28Speaker 3: a great feeling, and you know, I'm happy that people
- 1:31Speaker 3: are getting to experience it, and you know, it's cool
- 1:33Speaker 3: kind of popping my head in, you know, to peek in,
- 1:37Speaker 3: like let's see what the NBA guys are doing, let's
- 1:39Speaker 3: see what the soccer guys are doing. You know what
- 1:40Speaker 3: I mean.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I feel it, I feel and all that.
- 1:45Speaker 1: You know. So, Michigan World Cup going on with NBA,
- 1:49Speaker 1: we have NHL that just finished up. Baseball is a
- 1:52Speaker 1: full swing. It's a great time of year. We got
- 1:54Speaker 1: a lot of boxing. A lot of boxing happened this
- 1:57Speaker 1: past week and going forward. So great time the year
- 2:00Speaker 1: man summertime. I always say there should always be fight
- 2:04Speaker 1: standing every weekend when it comes to summer.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But you know what, fake we can get and it's
- 2:08Speaker 2: all good.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Well, and we do have a lot to go over
- 2:12Speaker 3: about what's been going on. Let's start with this past Saturday.
- 2:14Speaker 3: So uh in Glendale, Arizona, UH, just a couple hours
- 2:18Speaker 3: away from me, we had Jesse Beam Rodriguez from San
- 2:21Speaker 3: Antonio fighting Antonio Varguas, who, as I've said before, is
- 2:25Speaker 3: not one of Fernando Vargus the Suns. It's three sons.
- 2:28Speaker 3: This guy's not one of them. But Ben Rodriguez manet
- 2:32Speaker 3: kid keeps looking better and better.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Started off like Antonio Vargus was was looking really good,
- 2:39Speaker 3: definitely won a couple of early rounds. I was kind
- 2:41Speaker 3: of thinking, like, all right, Jesse, you gotta step it up,
- 2:44Speaker 3: you know. Either if this keeps up and you know
- 2:47Speaker 3: you don't step on the gas, we might hit hit
- 2:48Speaker 3: a draw, maybe even an l for for Ben Mardriguez,
- 2:52Speaker 3: but no man round six killer knockout.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Just an amazing performance. Two knockdowns. And the big thing
- 3:01Speaker 3: with Jesseva Marodriguez is people are saying that he should
- 3:03Speaker 3: fight now. Yeah, in a way, that's kind of the
- 3:05Speaker 3: mega fight to make one of the announcers asking does
- 3:08Speaker 3: he look ready for In a way, and you know
- 3:11Speaker 3: it's hard to say, but I mean, nobody's ever ready.
- 3:13Speaker 3: But I don't know. I mean, what do you how
- 3:14Speaker 3: do you feel about this kid? You know, he's he's
- 3:17Speaker 3: bound to be a star.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I think I'd love to see it. I'd love to
- 3:20Speaker 1: see it ready or not. It's one of those things
- 3:23Speaker 1: where you don't know if you're ready till you're in
- 3:25Speaker 1: the ring. Like, here's the thing that we all got
- 3:27Speaker 1: to remember, Like every boxer has gotten in the ring
- 3:31Speaker 1: not ready, but they arrive, and I just thinks that
- 3:35Speaker 1: it's time to where hey. Decisions have to be made
- 3:39Speaker 1: to make that leap because here's the thing, you don't understand.
- 3:42Speaker 1: The options that are there now may not be available
- 3:45Speaker 1: in six months or a year. Things happen, crazy stuff happens,
- 3:48Speaker 1: et cetera, et cetera. There's an option to fight an away.
- 3:52Speaker 1: You might want to take it, because here's the thing.
- 3:55Speaker 1: If you win that fight, you are now the king
- 3:59Speaker 1: of that vision and a huge pounerful pound argument. So
- 4:03Speaker 1: in my opinion, if that fights there, you make it happen.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Also like to see that fight in the US as well.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I don't like people having to travel, you know, twelve
- 4:12Speaker 1: hours away, fourteen hours away. But that's out of my
- 4:15Speaker 1: that's out of my payroll of hair range, so I
- 4:17Speaker 1: can't really go in detail about that, but we'll see
- 4:19Speaker 1: what ends up happening. I hope they make the fight,
- 4:21Speaker 1: because here's the thing. We got to make as many
- 4:23Speaker 1: big fights as possible.
- 4:24Speaker 2: We have to.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Like you mentioned all the sports earlier, all the other
- 4:28Speaker 1: sports are having huge news in whatever they're doing. We're
- 4:32Speaker 1: soccer got World Cup, NBA just had the highest rated
- 4:35Speaker 1: finals in the last twenty eight years. NHL has Vegas
- 4:41Speaker 1: in the Stanley Cup, which is a big, a big
- 4:43Speaker 1: story for many reasons. So every sport got motion going
- 4:47Speaker 1: on right now. Boxing's kind of like in the background
- 4:51Speaker 1: they need. If they can be a mega fight at
- 4:54Speaker 1: guys at this weight, that would be a good situation.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yeah, and we'll get more into this, but a lot
- 4:59Speaker 3: of the a lot of the news that I'm seeing
- 5:01Speaker 3: come up in my feet usually has to do with
- 5:02Speaker 3: Dana White coming in and shenanigans that we'll get into.
- 5:05Speaker 3: So we're not Yeah, our sport is not getting the
- 5:07Speaker 3: highlight for the right reasons unfortunately. But yeah, I mean
- 5:12Speaker 3: this is anytime now. Yeah, in a way, fights it's
- 5:15Speaker 3: a big deal. Unfortunately, Yeah, a lot of us can't
- 5:18Speaker 3: watch when it's airing because it's four in the morning
- 5:21Speaker 3: our time, because he fights in Tokyo a lot. But
- 5:23Speaker 3: even so, there's still clips going around, you know, there's
- 5:26Speaker 3: still a lot of it's a big deal in the
- 5:29Speaker 3: last couple of fights when he got knocked down, not out,
- 5:32Speaker 3: but you know, he got put on it like that
- 5:34Speaker 3: show was everywhere. So uh, it's kind of a natural prank.
- 5:39Speaker 3: If there's a guy that that the people think could
- 5:43Speaker 3: even be a potential rival for him, you're right, the
- 5:45Speaker 3: fight has to be made. You can't deli deli and
- 5:48Speaker 3: hell even say like, well, I don't think BAM's gonna win,
- 5:50Speaker 3: doesn't matter, you know, you gotta you gotta get in
- 5:53Speaker 3: there with him. And yes, I don't know, I have
- 5:57Speaker 3: no idea how much you don't. I know he's a
- 6:00Speaker 3: big draw in Japan. Obviously his fights are well attended
- 6:04Speaker 3: this and that. But I can't imagine that putting one
- 6:09Speaker 3: of his fights against Bam in Vegas, you know, maybe
- 6:12Speaker 3: on a holiday weekend or something like that. I gotta
- 6:15Speaker 3: imagine that's like way more profitable, way more attended, way
- 6:18Speaker 3: more eyeballs, especially since it's going to be in the US,
- 6:21Speaker 3: so I think they're kind of leaving money on the
- 6:24Speaker 3: table if they don't do that bring it stateside.
- 6:28Speaker 2: But yeah, I.
- 6:29Speaker 3: After seeing what bam and he moved up by the way,
- 6:32Speaker 3: I can't remember what way, Close says, sorry, I should
- 6:35Speaker 3: had that ready, but he moved up a couple pounds
- 6:39Speaker 3: and he looked great. After seeing his performance, I thought,
- 6:43Speaker 3: you know this, this is the fight that has to
- 6:46Speaker 3: be made. Now I'm getting excited at the idea of it.
- 6:49Speaker 3: At first, I was like, what's.
- 6:51Speaker 1: That has to be made? It has to be made
- 6:54Speaker 1: because here's the thing. The one thing you don't want
- 6:57Speaker 1: is in a way just fighting random guy. Is that
- 7:01Speaker 1: people don't know about. You want him fighting guys other
- 7:05Speaker 1: people have seen fight you. And I'm also fighting on
- 7:08Speaker 1: our time zone one way or another east or west
- 7:12Speaker 1: coach time, you know, relative to when people are up.
- 7:15Speaker 1: There's too many times where we got to wake up
- 7:17Speaker 1: and find out what happened and then rewatch the fight.
- 7:20Speaker 2: So I agree with you with all those things.
- 7:24Speaker 1: All that being said, though, is we have to get
- 7:26Speaker 1: back to guys fighting the number one or number two
- 7:30Speaker 1: contenders or guys that are as talented to either the
- 7:33Speaker 1: number one or two contenders. We've gotten away from that
- 7:35Speaker 1: to where guys aren't taking chances, guys aren't fighting, not
- 7:40Speaker 1: as Nussard guys that can beat them, but guys that
- 7:42Speaker 1: are talented. We've kind of gotten away from that. So
- 7:45Speaker 1: every being nice to see and we'll see what happens
- 7:47Speaker 1: if it does get made. But it reason I see
- 7:49Speaker 1: a competitive match out the gate.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Absolutely, and you know, just a little man of kope
- 7:57Speaker 3: here Ben when it went from super flyweight up to
- 7:59Speaker 3: bent Way, so he went up to one eighteen for
- 8:02Speaker 3: for this fight.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:05Speaker 3: On a couple of other things that happened that night. Unfortunately,
- 8:07Speaker 3: we had a couple of friends of the show fighting. Unfortunately,
- 8:10Speaker 3: Jordan Martinez, who I got to interview, he lost on
- 8:14Speaker 3: an undisputed decision against This was their second fight. Uh,
- 8:18Speaker 3: came to a draw. Everybody was clamoring for them to
- 8:20Speaker 3: run it back. You know, Jordan looked great. You know,
- 8:23Speaker 3: he's awesome. One l isn't gonna derail you or anything.
- 8:26Speaker 3: You know, guys like him, young guys gotta stay hungry,
- 8:29Speaker 3: you gotta stay active. It's a bumber to see, but uh,
- 8:34Speaker 3: you know, I don't think it's Honestly, I don't think
- 8:35Speaker 3: it's gonna slow him down. He's too energetic and too
- 8:37Speaker 3: hungry for for this this to stop him. Other friend
- 8:42Speaker 3: of the show, Trinio Choa, who has been interviewed here
- 8:44Speaker 3: we uh he won via knockout. His previous fight in
- 8:49Speaker 3: Phoenix unfortunately also came to a loss, but he bounced
- 8:53Speaker 3: back in great fashion. So it was really cool seeing
- 8:55Speaker 3: these guys. But for me having met these dudes and
- 8:58Speaker 3: interviewed them and seeing them, you know, in a major
- 9:01Speaker 3: event on you know, a pay per view fight on
- 9:04Speaker 3: his own, is this It's surreal. I mean it's a
- 9:07Speaker 3: I've never done anything like this. You know, you've interviewed
- 9:10Speaker 3: way more athletes than I have. I mean, here's she's
- 9:12Speaker 3: a question like does that feeling kind of go away?
- 9:15Speaker 3: Like if you interview an NBA star you see him
- 9:17Speaker 3: on TV, is it just like whatever now to you?
- 9:19Speaker 1: So for it's a long time, you get used to
- 9:21Speaker 1: it after a while, but it is dope following up
- 9:25Speaker 1: and coming guys. So when you're interviewing like guys trying
- 9:28Speaker 1: to make the NBA or guys at the end of
- 9:30Speaker 1: the bench, Uh, that's always cool. Or guys coming up
- 9:33Speaker 1: playing in the minor leagues. That's always cool because there's
- 9:36Speaker 1: a story there, right. The guys that already pros, that
- 9:39Speaker 1: are already established, they're cool, But it just depends because
- 9:43Speaker 1: a lot of them don't like talking to media, a
- 9:45Speaker 1: lot of them don't like doing media. So you get
- 9:47Speaker 1: more engagement from guys that are trying to make it
- 9:51Speaker 1: because people aren't really gravitating towards them, and then guys
- 9:54Speaker 1: that are really just trying to find their spot, either
- 10:00Speaker 1: on the team or the league or whatever. Those tend
- 10:02Speaker 1: to be the best interviews because those guys don't take
- 10:05Speaker 1: things that seriously as guys that are establishing, the guys that.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Have PR managers and all that.
- 10:11Speaker 1: So it's a little bit different when it comes to boxing, though,
- 10:13Speaker 1: boxing is a bit different because the athlete doesn't is
- 10:17Speaker 1: not excuse me, the boxer is not really word about
- 10:23Speaker 1: PR like that, so they're not as PR conscious as
- 10:27Speaker 1: other athletes per se. Now, they're not gonna say anything
- 10:30Speaker 1: crazy off top like that, but it's more about you'll
- 10:33Speaker 1: get more info when you ask questions. As long as
- 10:36Speaker 1: the boxer likes to converse and likes to go in detail,
- 10:41Speaker 1: you'll get real answers like Sean Porter might be the
- 10:44Speaker 1: best interview in boxing, and he has a great personality.
- 10:48Speaker 1: It's a very nice guy. He gives you in depth
- 10:51Speaker 1: answers to the questions you ask, and you know, guys
- 10:54Speaker 1: like that will give you a lot of insight. Now,
- 10:57Speaker 1: Shaker Stevenson is somebody I would love to interview because
- 11:01Speaker 1: he loves boxing like he loves like he loves boxing.
- 11:04Speaker 1: He loves talking about boxing, and it's not for the
- 11:07Speaker 1: wrong reasons. It's for the correct reasons, for the reasons
- 11:10Speaker 1: where he loves a sport. That'd be a guy I
- 11:13Speaker 1: would lower we would love to interview because here's the thing,
- 11:17Speaker 1: he would nerd out on boxing and he would appreciate
- 11:20Speaker 1: the questions we would have to ask. So those are
- 11:23Speaker 1: always good interviews. Now, your interviews where you got to
- 11:26Speaker 1: force it or they're just not into it, it's such
- 11:29Speaker 1: because you got to do a job at the end
- 11:30Speaker 1: of the day.
- 11:31Speaker 2: It ain't really cool.
- 11:32Speaker 1: But the guys who really like talking and guys that
- 11:36Speaker 1: love giving answer to the topic of boxing or whatever
- 11:39Speaker 1: you're referring to, it's always a good thing.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Yeah, And you know, a million lifetimes ago, back when
- 11:45Speaker 3: I was a skinny college kid. I was I would
- 11:48Speaker 3: make the documentary films for school. And I've interviewed a
- 11:52Speaker 3: lot of people in my life. Have been very lucky
- 11:54Speaker 3: to have good interviews, but I'm honestly, I've also heard
- 11:57Speaker 3: the horror stories and when somebody is just not into
- 11:59Speaker 3: it one word answers, They'll be like, oh, tell us
- 12:01Speaker 3: about your next fight, and some gime, I go, it's
- 12:03Speaker 3: gonna be good and leave it at that. That's terrifying
- 12:06Speaker 3: to me. I've been very lucky that I've never had
- 12:09Speaker 3: to interview anybody like that, not just for the show,
- 12:11Speaker 3: but in you know, like I said, a previous life.
- 12:14Speaker 3: But yeah, you know it just it keeps me stoked
- 12:15Speaker 3: to to try to connect more athletes, so and and
- 12:19Speaker 3: anybody out there listening. You know, it doesn't matter if
- 12:21Speaker 3: you're like a one to oh young guy, you know,
- 12:23Speaker 3: we'll we'll talk to you. I love to learn about
- 12:25Speaker 3: the sport from the people actually doing it, you know,
- 12:27Speaker 3: things even things like you know, training, regiment this and that, uh,
- 12:31Speaker 3: you know, the dieting and all that meal planning, all
- 12:34Speaker 3: that stuff. I'm not gonna do it, but I'm still
- 12:36Speaker 3: very curious to learn about you know, what what athletes
- 12:39Speaker 3: you know, what what you put in your body, the
- 12:41Speaker 3: kind of things that the number of hours that you're training,
- 12:43Speaker 3: all that stuff is fascinating. But yeah, no, definitely big
- 12:48Speaker 3: shout out to Treaty and Jordan and uh, you know,
- 12:51Speaker 3: we definitely want to see them back in the ring
- 12:52Speaker 3: soon and back on the show as well. Hopefully we
- 12:55Speaker 3: get a chance to talk to them again and and
- 12:57Speaker 3: debrief about their event in so let's be onan It's
- 13:02Speaker 3: kind of a I was thinking, there's kind of like
- 13:03Speaker 3: a main topic for this episode, which is, uh, the
- 13:08Speaker 3: ongoing feud between Oscar Delaya and Dana White. For those
- 13:11Speaker 3: of you who don't know my man, Oscar loves talking shit.
- 13:15Speaker 3: He always loves that's always loved talking shit. He has
- 13:19Speaker 3: what is it, what does he call it? Clapback Thursdays,
- 13:22Speaker 3: like a week. Yeah, it's it's kind of funny. So
- 13:26Speaker 3: his Okay, this is the kind of thing where I
- 13:28Speaker 3: don't watch regularly, and when I watch it, I'm like,
- 13:31Speaker 3: I find this very annoying. But then i'm watching it,
- 13:33Speaker 3: I'm laughing, So you know what I mean. It's just
- 13:36Speaker 3: like I it's like I hate this, but damn it,
- 13:37Speaker 3: I hate you from actually making me laugh. So and
- 13:40Speaker 3: that's all he does. He does little animations. He's just
- 13:42Speaker 3: they're ranting and you know, to me fairy.
- 13:45Speaker 2: He does it.
- 13:45Speaker 3: He has really good points and he has he's very
- 13:47Speaker 3: passionate about the sport. He's not just you know, shouting
- 13:50Speaker 3: crazy like I don't know, good oh UFOs and you
- 13:52Speaker 3: know Bigfoot, you know, stupid sh like that. It's it is,
- 13:56Speaker 3: you know, very very pointed. But it is like I
- 14:00Speaker 3: would never tune in every Thursday to listen to Oscar talking.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Yeah no no, no, no no no.
- 14:06Speaker 3: But but if you but if a clip comes across
- 14:08Speaker 3: my feet, somebody sends it in the group chat, you know, great,
- 14:11Speaker 3: I'm happy, but uh let's start here. So we had
- 14:14Speaker 3: talked about Ryan Garcia saying that he saying that he
- 14:19Speaker 3: will be fighting Connor Ben. Connor Ben Is signed with
- 14:23Speaker 3: Dana White and ZUFA boxing. Ryan Garcia signed with Oscar
- 14:26Speaker 3: Deloya and Golden Boy for emotions. Ryan was talking about
- 14:30Speaker 3: it as if it was a done deal and Oscar Doola,
- 14:34Speaker 3: Oscar de la Ooya comes in and he says, slow
- 14:37Speaker 3: the funk down. Nobody talked to me about this. He
- 14:41Speaker 3: literally said to cease and desist to Dana White, which
- 14:45Speaker 3: is kind of crazy. I mean, uh, first things first,
- 14:48Speaker 3: I I'm on totally on board. First not We're not
- 14:50Speaker 3: Dana White fans, so I'm never gonna be on the
- 14:52Speaker 3: side period, Let's be honest.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Uh.
- 14:54Speaker 3: But I do think that, you know, I don't everybody
- 14:58Speaker 3: just kind of assume that Dana White can do whatever
- 14:59Speaker 3: the hell he wants because he has money and his
- 15:00Speaker 3: friends with the President. Let's keep it real, okay, And
- 15:03Speaker 3: I'm glad that Oscar is saying, like, hey man, listen,
- 15:06Speaker 3: He's not even saying no, this isn't gonna happen. He's
- 15:09Speaker 3: Oscar straight up said I'll work with any promoter, even
- 15:12Speaker 3: if it has to be Data White, because of course
- 15:14Speaker 3: he's still gotta still gotta you know, pepper that in.
- 15:17Speaker 3: But he says, we're gonna do it the right way,
- 15:19Speaker 3: and you know, I think it's a good thing. I
- 15:21Speaker 3: don't think we just let this guy just run wild
- 15:24Speaker 3: in this sport just because he's got fame and fortune elsewhere.
- 15:27Speaker 3: I don't know, what do you think about, you know,
- 15:29Speaker 3: Oscar's actions. We'll start just when you think about Oscar
- 15:32Speaker 3: doing this, and we'll take it from there.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Well, right now, Ryan's the best boxer Oscar have right now,
- 15:37Speaker 1: right or the most biggest straw for sure, right it's
- 15:40Speaker 1: gotta be.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Yeah, So you gotta protect what you got because here's
- 15:44Speaker 1: the thing. All it takes is one fight for somebody
- 15:47Speaker 1: else to pay you more than the current guy's paying you,
- 15:49Speaker 1: and you start getting ideas. It's like anything else. You
- 15:53Speaker 1: work one job one day, you work another of the next.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Wait a minute, the other one's paying fifty percent more.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Oh, I'm won't one.
- 16:00Speaker 1: So you gotta protect what you got because once that's over,
- 16:04Speaker 1: it's over. And he developed Ryan. So we remember Oscar's
- 16:08Speaker 1: been with Ryan through the good and bad. So I'm Oscar. Yeah, nah,
- 16:13Speaker 1: we not doing nothing off the cup. Everything needs to
- 16:16Speaker 1: be in contract and Ryan. Because I stuck through Ryan
- 16:19Speaker 1: through all the BS. I don't lost money on Ryan
- 16:22Speaker 1: the whole nine. So Oscar is in the right here, like, hey,
- 16:27Speaker 1: we can we have a way of doing this, this
- 16:29Speaker 1: support We're gonna continue doing it. So I have no
- 16:32Speaker 1: problem with at all.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Yeah, And I just looked it up. I looked at
- 16:35Speaker 3: some of the Golden Boy names, you know, the ones
- 16:37Speaker 3: that recognize are Gabriella Fundora and Virgil Artist Junior definitely
- 16:41Speaker 3: nowhere near the amount of fame that Ryan has on
- 16:45Speaker 3: that roster for.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Sure, right.
- 16:48Speaker 3: But yeah, no, I And let's provide this isn't the
- 16:50Speaker 3: first time that Oscar has stopped Ryan from getting into
- 16:53Speaker 3: Shenanigan's in deo fights that he didn't sanction. So he
- 16:56Speaker 3: was supposed to fight a kickboxer maybe, And I don't
- 16:58Speaker 3: know if it was this past Christmas or the one
- 17:00Speaker 3: for something like that. And yeah, I think I think
- 17:02Speaker 3: he was even going to Japan for an exhibition fight.
- 17:05Speaker 3: And Oscar is like, hell though I didn't say, I
- 17:07Speaker 3: didn't say yes to this?
- 17:08Speaker 2: What that?
- 17:09Speaker 1: What?
- 17:09Speaker 3: Like?
- 17:10Speaker 2: What?
- 17:10Speaker 3: I guess I'm very curious to what Ryightan thinks is
- 17:13Speaker 3: gonna happen. I don't know that you would have an answer.
- 17:16Speaker 1: But it's just like it's one of those things where
- 17:18Speaker 1: any idea sounds cool. He's trying to jump on it,
- 17:21Speaker 1: but it don't work that way. Like that's the thing
- 17:23Speaker 1: he don't realize, like you want it one way, but
- 17:25Speaker 1: it's the other. You know, it don't work when you
- 17:28Speaker 1: have a promoter, got something like Oscar and you in Yo,
- 17:32Speaker 1: you know in your corner, you better take advantage of that.
- 17:34Speaker 1: That's not everybody don't have that option, you know. So
- 17:37Speaker 1: for me, it's kind of odd to see how he's
- 17:39Speaker 1: moving because like Oscar got his faults, but when it
- 17:42Speaker 1: comes to making money and turns of putting up in
- 17:45Speaker 1: good fights, he's been doing it for a long time
- 17:48Speaker 1: and Ryan going to other places.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I don't know if that works like that. I don't
- 17:52Speaker 2: I don't think that works the way people think it would.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Well. The thing about Oscar too, and you know, correct
- 17:57Speaker 3: me if there's something else that you can think of,
- 17:59Speaker 3: But he's seems to be consistent. He's been the most
- 18:03Speaker 3: consistent of promoters other than Bob Aram when it comes
- 18:06Speaker 3: to like, for example, uh PDC putting a lot of money,
- 18:10Speaker 3: you know, back put on some good fights and then
- 18:12Speaker 3: ended up losing a shit ton of money, you know,
- 18:14Speaker 3: and kind of went went downhill. The number of fights
- 18:16Speaker 3: went downhill, you know. The thea Sadis came in and
- 18:20Speaker 3: infused a ton of tons of money into ZUFA and
- 18:23Speaker 3: into match room, but like this was recent and its
- 18:26Speaker 3: just like a big spike and billions of dollars that
- 18:28Speaker 3: they're spending. But Oscar's been doing this tried and true
- 18:31Speaker 3: for a long time now, and he's no, he's he
- 18:34Speaker 3: hasn't been you know. Uh, I don't know if there's
- 18:38Speaker 3: any like issues with him and money or anything like that,
- 18:41Speaker 3: but it doesn't either. He's he's not losing millions and
- 18:43Speaker 3: millions or billions on fights, you know, like we got
- 18:46Speaker 3: we gotta remember, like he's the first guy to really
- 18:49Speaker 3: understand the pay per view game and the promotion game.
- 18:52Speaker 2: He was the first guy in my recollection to promote
- 18:55Speaker 2: his own fights, all right, so he knows the business
- 18:59Speaker 2: inside and out. If I'm going to.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Follow anyone in this game, it's gonna be Oscar when
- 19:03Speaker 1: it comes to that, because he did it, and he
- 19:06Speaker 1: was a draw. He was one of the biggest draws
- 19:08Speaker 1: we've ever had, especially for non heavyweights. It's basically him
- 19:11Speaker 1: and Floyd are the two biggest draws you've ever had
- 19:14Speaker 1: for guys that are not one hundred and eighty pounds up.
- 19:16Speaker 1: So for me, in my opinion, it wouldn't make sense
- 19:19Speaker 1: to go away from Oscar because at least with Oscar
- 19:22Speaker 1: there structure, with Zoofa, like you said, they could be
- 19:25Speaker 1: here Togeay gone in six months. I don't trust nothing people.
- 19:29Speaker 1: I don't trust the chic like that when it comes
- 19:32Speaker 1: to overall thing I'm boxing. I don't trust in in
- 19:34Speaker 1: white light that I think they're here as long as
- 19:37Speaker 1: they can, and then once they don't feel that there's
- 19:40Speaker 1: value in boxing, they're gonna separate themselves from the situation.
- 19:44Speaker 1: That's what I get the vibes of at the moment.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I hope I'm wrong, I really do. But from what
- 19:49Speaker 1: it feels like, the way the language is and the
- 19:51Speaker 1: way things are going on, it feels like it's a
- 19:53Speaker 1: lot of press opportunities, it's a lot of things that
- 19:57Speaker 1: sound kind of cool, a lot of weird fight matter,
- 20:00Speaker 1: and then that's it. And it's like, I don't see
- 20:04Speaker 1: things that are goodness for boxing. I see things that
- 20:06Speaker 1: are goodness for people who are setting these fights up.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Like there's a lot of name brand, name recognition and
- 20:12Speaker 1: pub for the people who are arranging these fights.
- 20:15Speaker 2: But I'm not seeing the best fights for boxing.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Sure. And a point that Oscar made on one of
- 20:20Speaker 3: his videos was that you know the fighters who do
- 20:23Speaker 3: sign with Dana White, you know the spokes Sorry let
- 20:25Speaker 3: me let me rewind here. The point that he made
- 20:29Speaker 3: is that the Saudi's are losing a shit ton of
- 20:31Speaker 3: money on boxing. We talked about before that that's not
- 20:34Speaker 3: the point. It's kind of to sanitizer country's image, YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 20:37Speaker 3: But Oscar made a point to speak to the fighters
- 20:41Speaker 3: and say, like, yo, you gotta be be careful and
- 20:43Speaker 3: read your contracts to see if you need to get
- 20:45Speaker 3: out of zoof for boxing contracts when the money drives up.
- 20:47Speaker 3: I think if Dana White has a chance to make
- 20:49Speaker 3: money and by underpaying boxers specifically, he'll stay around forever.
- 20:53Speaker 3: I mean the model work with him for UFC, as
- 20:56Speaker 3: long as he gets to do whatever the hell he
- 20:57Speaker 3: wants with boxing and screw over. Let's let's be real here,
- 21:03Speaker 3: he'll he'll hang around. Now, Yes, ZUFA is funded by
- 21:06Speaker 3: the saudiast but I can't imagine that if that money
- 21:09Speaker 3: drives up that Dana White doesn't have, you know, research,
- 21:11Speaker 3: He's also has a shit little money himself, right.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Well, so yeah, he's good regardless because he got part
- 21:17Speaker 1: of the original UFC sale and everything, so he's good.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Like he's always gonna be fonky the UFC. I'm not
- 21:24Speaker 1: the biggest fan of it, but people like it a lot.
- 21:27Speaker 1: People buy merge, they go to fights, they stream fights,
- 21:29Speaker 1: all nine. It will never go out of style. There'll
- 21:33Speaker 1: always be somebody ready to fight that kind of fight.
- 21:36Speaker 1: So he'll always have a league or a business. But
- 21:40Speaker 1: with that being said, things do change and there's more
- 21:46Speaker 1: sports that young people are playing than ever before. We
- 21:49Speaker 1: have people playing hockey, we got people playing volleyball, soccer,
- 21:54Speaker 1: the whole whole nine. So just the whole Oh, I
- 21:57Speaker 1: don't play any of the main sports, I'm gonna go fight.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I don't know how that goes with the younger generation.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I know what our generation was to where if you
- 22:04Speaker 1: didn't play basketball, football, baseball and like mixed up a
- 22:07Speaker 1: little bit, you fought that when you box, you wrestle whatever,
- 22:12Speaker 1: and you end up in UFC or whatever. But I
- 22:14Speaker 1: don't know going forward in the future. I'm very curious
- 22:18Speaker 1: about the UFC because yes' always be guys lining up
- 22:21Speaker 1: to fight, But I don't think it's gonna be the
- 22:22Speaker 1: same as well was with our generation. I could be wrong,
- 22:25Speaker 1: but I don't think so. So with him, he's always
- 22:28Speaker 1: looking for avenues to make money. He has a slat
- 22:30Speaker 1: box league. He's in the boxing as well as UFC,
- 22:33Speaker 1: so there's ventures he's gonna try well.
- 22:38Speaker 3: And UFC is still popular, it's still cool, and it
- 22:40Speaker 3: still has a lot of draw. I personally don't think
- 22:43Speaker 3: it's cool, but you know, the people do, it's a
- 22:45Speaker 3: big draw. So when young fighters, if they don't want
- 22:48Speaker 3: to do leg boxing and they want to do just
- 22:50Speaker 3: fist boxing and they know Dana Whites involved, they know,
- 22:52Speaker 3: I'm sure they're UFC fans. Sean Porter is speaking of
- 22:56Speaker 3: which he mentioned in my interview with him that a
- 22:59Speaker 3: lot of UFCS guys love boxers and that he learned
- 23:04Speaker 3: to get into the sport because he wanted to support
- 23:06Speaker 3: them as well, because there's he said, there was a
- 23:08Speaker 3: lot of UFC guys that knew exactly who he was
- 23:10Speaker 3: and knew his record and followed him. So I think
- 23:13Speaker 3: it's it's unfortunate that if you know, a young person,
- 23:15Speaker 3: maybe just a young fighter who wants to get into boxing,
- 23:19Speaker 3: kind of sees a recognizable name, But young guys like
- 23:22Speaker 3: I don't know, you know, we're we're old heads. Of
- 23:25Speaker 3: course we remember Oscar, we saw Oscar fight, you remember,
- 23:28Speaker 3: you know his his brand, But is he relevant to
- 23:31Speaker 3: the kids these days as much as he used to?
- 23:33Speaker 2: I don't think so well, depend I think he's relevant to.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Real hardcore boxing fans and then probably younger Mexican fans
- 23:43Speaker 1: just based off of his background. But it's very and
- 23:49Speaker 1: I'm not delivered to speak on it, but there's a
- 23:51Speaker 1: complicated history between Oscar and Mexican people when it comes
- 23:56Speaker 1: to boxing and how he portrayed him himself doing his
- 24:00Speaker 1: prime and whatnot. Again, I'm not liberty to go in
- 24:03Speaker 1: detail about that. That's what that's above my pay grade.
- 24:06Speaker 1: I'm allowing you to go into detail all But with
- 24:09Speaker 1: that being said, it's fascinating because Oscar is so popular
- 24:14Speaker 1: during his heyday, like he had McDonald's commercials. Well, that
- 24:17Speaker 1: being said, though, I'm very fascinated by that because yes,
- 24:23Speaker 1: I think Mexican families would definitely talk about Oscar one
- 24:29Speaker 1: way or another to the children people. I don't know
- 24:33Speaker 1: if it's like that with the majority of the other
- 24:35Speaker 1: people though, I don't know, but boxing people absolutely.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Yeah, And I do have some thoughts that I'll get
- 24:42Speaker 3: into on that in Oscar History and legacy. But yeah,
- 24:45Speaker 3: I mean, I am really positioning this conversation as an
- 24:47Speaker 3: Oscar versus data situation because it seems like Oscar's the
- 24:51Speaker 3: one that's gone hardest against him. Eddie Hern has made
- 24:55Speaker 3: some complaints or you know, taken some shots of Data White,
- 24:57Speaker 3: but it's not the same like Oscar straight up, like
- 25:00Speaker 3: I think he hates that man. He talks mad shit
- 25:02Speaker 3: about Dana Why constantly and has been doing it for months,
- 25:05Speaker 3: and he seems to be sort of like, uh, like
- 25:08Speaker 3: I said, if the if the fight is between Oscar
- 25:10Speaker 3: and Dana White, I'm gonna take Oscar side one hundred
- 25:12Speaker 3: percent of the time. Yeah, So in my mind, I've
- 25:17Speaker 3: sort of put them as like, uh, just natural rivals
- 25:20Speaker 3: and in the business side of if that makes sense. Yeah,
- 25:23Speaker 3: so that's kind of one I wanted to have this
- 25:25Speaker 3: conversation specifically about them too, and you know, yeah, just
- 25:29Speaker 3: I'm very curious to see if you know, young fighters
- 25:31Speaker 3: if if of course, there's a lot of different options
- 25:34Speaker 3: with promoters and this and that, but if you put
- 25:36Speaker 3: Dana White and Oscar in front of them as who
- 25:39Speaker 3: you would want to sign with, I don't know. Yeah,
- 25:41Speaker 3: I mean you might be right, you know, young Mexican
- 25:44Speaker 3: fighters might be wreck no no Oscar's name from the
- 25:47Speaker 3: family history, et cetera. But again, Dana's the guy. The
- 25:51Speaker 3: guy that's popular now UFC is popular today, So I
- 25:55Speaker 3: don't know, it's it's it's hard to say. So I'll
- 25:58Speaker 3: be very interested to see, Like I don't see Oscar
- 26:02Speaker 3: backing down on his you know, criticism of Dana White
- 26:06Speaker 3: on his you know attacks. Let's just make it clear.
- 26:11Speaker 3: He now, he did say. What's funny is that when
- 26:12Speaker 3: he said I'll work with the nay promoter, even if
- 26:15Speaker 3: it has to be Dana that's totally fine, and he
- 26:17Speaker 3: said we'll both be on the stage, I think people
- 26:19Speaker 3: might be more interested between the rivalry between him and
- 26:22Speaker 3: me than the actual fighters, which is kind of true. Man.
- 26:26Speaker 3: I actually that might get me. I don't usually watch
- 26:29Speaker 3: press conferences. I always just you know, want to see
- 26:32Speaker 3: the fight, that's what matters most. But I would be
- 26:34Speaker 3: interested to see what's going on between Oscar and Dana
- 26:37Speaker 3: White if they're both standing on that stage next to
- 26:39Speaker 3: their fighters. No, I agree with you, but also think
- 26:42Speaker 3: about like this too.
- 26:44Speaker 1: When it comes to Dana White has also worked with
- 26:49Speaker 1: at the time Floyd was he was his.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Own thing with his own promotion company.
- 26:55Speaker 1: But he Dana White's been in these boxing type of negotiations,
- 26:59Speaker 1: so he knows how the bits has worked. If there's
- 27:01Speaker 1: a way to make money, he's going to find a
- 27:03Speaker 1: way to do it. That's one thing I will say
- 27:05Speaker 1: about Dana White. He is a hustler. He is a gambler.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I will say that. I do know people who know
- 27:10Speaker 1: him in the city. They've all had relatively good experiences
- 27:13Speaker 1: with him. So I can't say anything negative about like
- 27:16Speaker 1: that about him per se. But when it comes making money,
- 27:19Speaker 1: he's going to find a way. So if he if
- 27:22Speaker 1: he sees a way to market something and make it
- 27:25Speaker 1: bigger than what it might be or could be, he's
- 27:28Speaker 1: going to be there. So I think marketing wise, he's
- 27:30Speaker 1: very good. How he does his business with the UFC,
- 27:33Speaker 1: I think is our biggest issue with him, amongst other things.
- 27:35Speaker 2: But when it comes to actual.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Actual sport of boxing, I think we're more concerned than
- 27:44Speaker 1: trying to UFC things or they're trying to muscle his
- 27:46Speaker 1: way in and try and change the way things are
- 27:48Speaker 1: done in boxing.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I think that's our biggest concern at the moment.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Sure, and I think this is I personally think it's
- 27:56Speaker 3: kind of unfortunate, is that if the Saudi money is
- 27:58Speaker 3: still being it still is coming in at the rated
- 28:02Speaker 3: it is. They're backing him. I think a lot of
- 28:05Speaker 3: the boxing world is gonna differ because money talks, you know,
- 28:08Speaker 3: That's that's what basically will go around. The only person
- 28:11Speaker 3: who might be a stop gap is Oscar because he's
- 28:14Speaker 3: the only one who doesn't you know, it seemed to
- 28:18Speaker 3: he's not intimidated. He's not you know, he doesn't have
- 28:20Speaker 3: to worry about, you know, all this money that that
- 28:23Speaker 3: is coming in. He seems to be doing just fine
- 28:24Speaker 3: as a promoter, as a celebrity, et cetera. So yeah,
- 28:29Speaker 3: I mean that that's kind of been, like I said,
- 28:31Speaker 3: my my thought process in the last few I would
- 28:32Speaker 3: say it really solidified it for me in the last
- 28:36Speaker 3: week when this whole season, this thing came through. Is
- 28:38Speaker 3: that like, oh yeah, this guy really really wants to
- 28:41Speaker 3: be sort of a buffer to whatever Dana White wants
- 28:44Speaker 3: to do. If it's if it's not by the rules,
- 28:46Speaker 3: you know, let's say that, if it's not by the
- 28:48Speaker 3: by the by the playbook. With that said, I wanted
- 28:53Speaker 3: to take this opportunity to mention and talk a little
- 28:55Speaker 3: bit more about Oscar, specifically, especially my history with him.
- 28:59Speaker 3: I guess you could call it. I don't know, maybe
- 29:01Speaker 3: like a public apology. But yeah, growing up, you know,
- 29:05Speaker 3: my family was a Julos as such have his family.
- 29:08Speaker 3: You know, my both my parents were from They were
- 29:10Speaker 3: born in Mexico. I was born in the US, but
- 29:13Speaker 3: they were from Mexico. And what you mentioned earlier, and
- 29:17Speaker 3: this is the thing that pretty much everybody knows Oscar, Yeah,
- 29:21Speaker 3: he's Mexican American, and he was sort of ridiculed a
- 29:27Speaker 3: lot for not being Mexican enough. You know, he didn't
- 29:29Speaker 3: speak Spanish. You know, he wore the pink polo shirts,
- 29:32Speaker 3: he like golf. You know, he was honestly made to
- 29:34Speaker 3: seem very effeminate. Like you know, they and I'll just
- 29:37Speaker 3: say it, they just called him that he was a
- 29:39Speaker 3: gay guy, but not because they really believed that as
- 29:42Speaker 3: an insult. That was back when you know, just being
- 29:44Speaker 3: called gay was the was the insult of choice. And
- 29:46Speaker 3: it's terrible, you know. And as a kid when Oscar
- 29:50Speaker 3: you know was coming up, as in the mid to
- 29:53Speaker 3: late nineties, you know, I was born we were born
- 29:54Speaker 3: in eighty six, so I was not even a teenager there.
- 29:59Speaker 3: And you know, like with a any other sport, like
- 30:01Speaker 3: with politics, you know, you support her, your parents support
- 30:04Speaker 3: you know, and I as a kid, I was like, man,
- 30:08Speaker 3: screw this Oscar guy. Like I'm a Chabas kid, you know,
- 30:10Speaker 3: We're a Chavis family. And I now, as an adult,
- 30:14Speaker 3: I regret the shit out of it, honestly, because Oscar
- 30:16Speaker 3: was a punchline in my family specifically, and in a
- 30:19Speaker 3: lot of Mexican families. And I think that sucks because
- 30:22Speaker 3: I missed out on, you know, following Oscar's career, his
- 30:26Speaker 3: prime fights. Now you know, I've gone back since and
- 30:29Speaker 3: I'm like, you know, this guy, this guy actually was
- 30:31Speaker 3: a great fighter. You know, there's a reason he was
- 30:33Speaker 3: such a big star. And I really kind of regret
- 30:37Speaker 3: sort of wasting that time not being an Oscar de
- 30:40Speaker 3: la Aya fan, because I was a dumb kid, a
- 30:42Speaker 3: dumb baby, you know what I mean. Has that happened
- 30:44Speaker 3: with you? Is there anything with you growing up, your
- 30:46Speaker 3: family or who you supported that You're like, this guy
- 30:48Speaker 3: sucks and kind of later regretted.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Nah, because I was always able to. I was always
- 30:56Speaker 1: able to kind of have my own mom, an own fandom.
- 30:59Speaker 1: So I mean, my dad loved Mike Tyson and he
- 31:02Speaker 1: loved other fighters as well, but it wasn't a you
- 31:05Speaker 1: gotta be this or else.
- 31:06Speaker 2: It was never that.
- 31:07Speaker 1: I mean, Oscar's big for a lot of reasons for me,
- 31:09Speaker 1: because he's from southern California.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Obviously he fought a lot.
- 31:15Speaker 1: And remember, being young, we always hear about going to
- 31:18Speaker 1: Vegas as like a vacation, a great time, etcetera, etcetera.
- 31:22Speaker 1: So when you would hear older people going to go
- 31:24Speaker 1: see Oscar fights, you're Shane fight whomever fight in Vegas,
- 31:28Speaker 1: Tyson fighting, et cetera. That was like a big deal
- 31:31Speaker 1: to us. So seeing Oscar fight so much in my youth,
- 31:35Speaker 1: it brings back a great time in life because knowing
- 31:38Speaker 1: him fighting, he's fighting somebody good. And also he would
- 31:41Speaker 1: fight at minimum twice a year, sometimes three times a year.
- 31:44Speaker 1: That's the one thing I will always say about Oscar,
- 31:46Speaker 1: all the jokes aside, he fought everyone. He fought everyone,
- 31:52Speaker 1: and he fought often. Now he may have had to
- 31:55Speaker 1: fight through to financial reasons, that's a whole different thing,
- 31:57Speaker 1: but he fought everyone and he put his best foot forward.
- 32:02Speaker 1: He didn't cheat you, and he yo, he's the guy
- 32:08Speaker 1: who wrote the blueprint for Floyd. Like with all the
- 32:11Speaker 1: stuff Floyd's going through now, that's his own business. I
- 32:13Speaker 1: don't really want to get to that, but in terms
- 32:15Speaker 1: of the making money part and the pay per view start,
- 32:19Speaker 1: Oscar wrote that playbook like Floyd took that, but Oscar
- 32:22Speaker 1: was the one who started that, being the marketable guy,
- 32:25Speaker 1: being the guy people tuned into fighting everybody. Like you said,
- 32:28Speaker 1: he didn't have the Mexican look that we're accustomed to
- 32:33Speaker 1: being sold from America and all that stuff is way
- 32:37Speaker 1: different than what Oscar was, especially back then thirty years ago.
- 32:41Speaker 1: It's way way different. So when you see Oscar, like
- 32:43Speaker 1: you said, where polo shirts that aren't like whatever rescent
- 32:48Speaker 1: colors that you see him, you know, play golf, play,
- 32:51Speaker 1: interact with other celebrities that don't necessarily look like boxing
- 32:55Speaker 1: fans and have commercials and all this, and that it's
- 32:59Speaker 1: way way different. Like you mentioned, Listeners was not that
- 33:03Speaker 1: Frand of Argus was not that. Who's at the era
- 33:08Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of that, you know, uh, both
- 33:11Speaker 1: Mark Marquees was not that.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Eric Rounds was not that so Oscar.
- 33:15Speaker 1: He was in the land of his own, but at
- 33:17Speaker 1: the same time he was so damn good, like fast
- 33:20Speaker 1: thing he's got. We remember him for the other stuff
- 33:23Speaker 1: more than his boxing. He was a really fucking good boxer,
- 33:28Speaker 1: and that doesn't get brought up enough. We forget about
- 33:31Speaker 1: We think about the pictures and the promotion and all this,
- 33:33Speaker 1: and that, Nah man oscar a boxer. Man, Nah, he
- 33:37Speaker 1: was really he was really good, very very good.
- 33:40Speaker 3: One hundred percent. And that's the kind of thing that,
- 33:42Speaker 3: you know, is frustrating that people's like, oh, you know,
- 33:45Speaker 3: he's he's yeah, playing golf, he's interacting with celebrities, he's
- 33:48Speaker 3: you know, he doesn't seem like your typical Mexican boxer,
- 33:50Speaker 3: et cetera. But he could fight, so that's all that
- 33:52Speaker 3: matters at the end of the day. You know, he
- 33:53Speaker 3: wasn't he wasn't Dilly Dell. He wasn't Jake Pauling in
- 33:57Speaker 3: the world of boxing, you know what I mean.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Oh no, And he he could actually box, so he
- 34:03Speaker 1: actually had plans in the ring. He can adjust, you know,
- 34:07Speaker 1: he can play defense a little bit, like he would
- 34:10Speaker 1: move his head, hand speed, like.
- 34:13Speaker 2: He was a really he was a very very like.
- 34:16Speaker 1: I can't stress how important he is to the sport
- 34:20Speaker 1: because here's the thing you don't realize. After Tyson's situation happened,
- 34:24Speaker 1: with the ear and everything, there was a gap of
- 34:27Speaker 1: who's gonna actually sell fights because holy Field got old.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Lynx Lewis was cool, but he wasn't a huge draw
- 34:35Speaker 1: like that. He wasn't a pay per view guy. He
- 34:37Speaker 1: was an HBO guy, so it wasn't a huge pay
- 34:39Speaker 1: per view guy. So when it came to my pay
- 34:41Speaker 1: per views and mega fights, Oscar was kind of the guy.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Like looking back on it, Oscar was a guy doing
- 34:48Speaker 1: pay per views and having big fights. I mean he
- 34:50Speaker 1: fought mostly twice, uh he I mean, he just fought
- 34:53Speaker 1: so many guys and it was every year he was
- 34:57Speaker 1: fighting so often and he was really doing well. So
- 35:00Speaker 1: with all that being said, it's very similar to Canelo
- 35:03Speaker 1: in a sense to where he five thought and he
- 35:05Speaker 1: fought down to everyone, didn't really duck anyone per se.
- 35:10Speaker 1: But the the image is one thing, right, Like you say,
- 35:14Speaker 1: being from Mexico is way different than being from.
- 35:18Speaker 2: The US and being of Mexican descent.
- 35:20Speaker 1: That's a very good thing you said a couple of
- 35:22Speaker 1: shows ago, and that is stuck with me easy this
- 35:25Speaker 1: day because the support each guy gets us different and
- 35:29Speaker 1: you can tell the passion behind one or the other
- 35:32Speaker 1: is way way different.
- 35:34Speaker 2: But that's just how it is, and there's no change
- 35:37Speaker 2: in that.
- 35:38Speaker 3: People will say, you know, well, I still hate Oscar
- 35:40Speaker 3: for beating who does Sef Chavz? You know, here's my
- 35:42Speaker 3: hero too. But I'm not even gonna say that. I'll
- 35:44Speaker 3: just say, yeah, I was a bummer. It's a bumber
- 35:46Speaker 3: to see my guy, you know, lose. But I feel
- 35:50Speaker 3: like if I were older and not a dumb baby,
- 35:52Speaker 3: like I said, my response would have been, my guy
- 35:54Speaker 3: had his time. Here's the new guy, like, let's let's
- 35:56Speaker 3: follow this new guy. And you know, there's no and
- 36:00Speaker 3: there's no reason not to be a fan of him
- 36:01Speaker 3: in the ring, what all the other stuff outside of
- 36:04Speaker 3: the ring, personal life and again the I'll just I
- 36:08Speaker 3: can't stress it enough. You know. The best way you
- 36:10Speaker 3: can describe it as him being a punchline. All of that.
- 36:14Speaker 3: That's fine too, whatever you want to, you know, make
- 36:15Speaker 3: him a punch that doesn't matter. You can't deny his skills,
- 36:18Speaker 3: and you can't deny his career and the influence of
- 36:20Speaker 3: the sport. And to the point where, I don't know
- 36:23Speaker 3: if you know this, Ja, but he actually started he
- 36:26Speaker 3: recorded music, like he recorded an album of Mariiacci music.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Did you ever know that I was not aware of that.
- 36:32Speaker 3: I remember. I remember when he was on TV in
- 36:35Speaker 3: the Mariacci outfit with the hat, and I remember just thinking, like,
- 36:40Speaker 3: this guy's joke. This guy is a loser, this guy's ridiculous.
- 36:43Speaker 3: He looks ridiculous. It's kind of the mindset of me
- 36:45Speaker 3: and my entire family. And here's the thing, Like sometime
- 36:49Speaker 3: last year, I put on a couple of those songs
- 36:51Speaker 3: I'd never actually heard him sing. They're pretty good. He
- 36:55Speaker 3: actually doesn't say he's not a bad singer.
- 36:56Speaker 1: You know.
- 36:57Speaker 3: The songs actually are catchy, Like that's stuff that you know,
- 36:59Speaker 3: kind of Mexican pop music that I would listen to anyway.
- 37:02Speaker 3: So even like that, I'm like, what what was I doing?
- 37:05Speaker 3: I was so unfair to the guy, And uh, you know,
- 37:07Speaker 3: I kind of want to because I take this opportunity
- 37:09Speaker 3: just to put it out there and say that, yeah,
- 37:11Speaker 3: I kind of regret not not becoming an Oscar fan
- 37:15Speaker 3: and just kind of letting that cultural divide, you know,
- 37:20Speaker 3: take take me along with it, you know, to be
- 37:22Speaker 3: stator on that, but you know it happens. You kind
- 37:26Speaker 3: of just said go with the flow, and then you
- 37:28Speaker 3: know which with your parents support you support, and you know,
- 37:31Speaker 3: I didn't see I didn't see a reason not to
- 37:33Speaker 3: do that back then, you know, being whatever got like
- 37:38Speaker 3: ten eleven years old whatever it was when when Oscar
- 37:42Speaker 3: was fighting. So yeah, I mean, I.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Think he.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Definitely want to take this opportunity to give him his due.
- 37:49Speaker 3: I think he definitely has has gotten more respect, even
- 37:52Speaker 3: from you know, Mexicans who didn't see him as Mexican UF.
- 37:56Speaker 3: I think everybody speaks of him sort of with respect
- 37:59Speaker 3: like you do, in terms of his skills and his legacy. Right,
- 38:02Speaker 3: So yeah, I don't know. I mean, I uh, I
- 38:07Speaker 3: think like I think, if I had a time machine,
- 38:09Speaker 3: I would do two things. I would tell myself not
- 38:10Speaker 3: to give that and to tell myself to definitely not
- 38:14Speaker 3: listen to my mother, who I love. But it's kind
- 38:16Speaker 3: of an asshole sometimes I say that lovingly, but just say, yeah,
- 38:20Speaker 3: you know, I I definitely am gonna follow this guy's
- 38:23Speaker 3: career and you know, not not miss out on on
- 38:26Speaker 3: prime prime era of a great, great fighter. So respect
- 38:31Speaker 3: to Oscar can be very annoying, but you know you
- 38:34Speaker 3: can't deny no matter what. I'm still a fan of
- 38:37Speaker 3: him today and I've gone back to watch a lot
- 38:41Speaker 3: of those fights, and man, the skills are undeniable, the
- 38:45Speaker 3: talent is undeniable. But that's pretty much all I had.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Let's wrap it up. Jameson where can people find you
- 38:52Speaker 3: on social media?
