- 0:00Speaker 1: How they said.
- 0:00Speaker 2: Verena motion left, Fignano looks left, a little hitch throws
- 0:03Speaker 2: to heart the end zone, man open touchdown jo Sterene
- 0:08Speaker 2: off the little hesitation by Fignano, the secondary BT have
- 0:12Speaker 2: the Husky score to up the lead thirty to twenty.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Touchdown connecticuts.
- 0:19Speaker 2: That would be the second of three second half touchdowns
- 0:22Speaker 2: for the Huskies.
- 0:22Speaker 1: And the young man.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Who caught the pass is Juice Verena and he is
- 0:26Speaker 2: with us on the Coaches Show from Havelock, North Carolina,
- 0:29Speaker 2: way out on the far eastern seaboard of North Carolina,
- 0:32Speaker 2: and he joins us here. First of all, it had
- 0:35Speaker 2: to feel really good to get that win at BC.
- 0:38Speaker 1: And you really getting involved in the last three games.
- 0:40Speaker 2: You've been busy, Yes, sir, what walked me through the
- 0:46Speaker 2: two touchdown passes? What you saw first quarter obviously was
- 0:49Speaker 2: a big catch and run. And let's do with that first.
- 0:52Speaker 2: What'd you see in the how'd you get so open?
- 0:55Speaker 3: Oh? So, for one, you know, all we coaches did
- 0:58Speaker 3: a great job of getting the scheme right a getting
- 1:02Speaker 3: certain formations or personnels. We knew that, uh, we would
- 1:05Speaker 3: go to our personnel to matches with five to two
- 1:08Speaker 3: they go heavy. I ended up seeing the structure just
- 1:11Speaker 3: running through, took it high, you know, found the saut
- 1:14Speaker 3: spot on his own and old line did a great
- 1:16Speaker 3: job giving Joe enough time to find me, and Joe
- 1:20Speaker 3: made a great throw and I just.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Did a risk second one. How much of his pump
- 1:24Speaker 2: fake took you to get open? Because I know you
- 1:28Speaker 2: were in motion on that play as I described, But
- 1:31Speaker 2: Joe did a little like a little pump fake.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Did that?
- 1:33Speaker 1: Did that help get you open?
- 1:35Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:35Speaker 3: You know it also helps with you know, the DV
- 1:38Speaker 3: having bad eyes and we had a feeling that was
- 1:41Speaker 3: going to happen this week, you know, as to watching film,
- 1:43Speaker 3: a lot of film on you know the secondary and
- 1:46Speaker 3: how bat.
- 1:46Speaker 4: I uh, how bad of os they got.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Yeah, Joe's little shimmy got them, got him to bite
- 1:53Speaker 3: down some more because he was looking at Joe, which
- 1:56Speaker 3: allowed me to just sneek past him and receive my
- 1:58Speaker 3: second tourch down.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Coach Moore mentioned with our Adam Jerdino after the game
- 2:03Speaker 2: he felt like the way Joe in the passing game
- 2:05Speaker 2: and the offense was just clicking as a hole through
- 2:07Speaker 2: the air, that this was a game that you had
- 2:09Speaker 2: to win.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Through the air. How confident is this group?
- 2:12Speaker 2: I mean we knew going into the season the weapons
- 2:15Speaker 2: that Joe Finnano had in the offensive line that you had,
- 2:18Speaker 2: you guys had the capability of scoring a lot of points.
- 2:20Speaker 2: But to have that trust in your coaching staff to
- 2:23Speaker 2: win the game through the air, that has to feel
- 2:24Speaker 2: really good.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah, it's all It's really all about trusting the plan
- 2:27Speaker 3: and once you got you know, we had got a
- 2:30Speaker 3: lot of great keys all the way around the offense,
- 2:32Speaker 3: and you know we just had a final way to
- 2:33Speaker 3: put everything together, you know, being again since the spring,
- 2:37Speaker 3: just ben in chemistry and stuff. So very very confident
- 2:40Speaker 3: when it comes to putting the ball through the air,
- 2:42Speaker 3: just like we are when it comes to running the ball.
- 2:45Speaker 3: So there's always no doubt whether it's two men in
- 2:48Speaker 3: it or well that you put the ball out the
- 2:49Speaker 3: air that we know put.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Points on the ball for the team.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Juice, you're kind of a hybrid, kind of between a
- 2:55Speaker 2: tight end and a wide receiver.
- 2:56Speaker 1: What room do you spend more time in?
- 2:58Speaker 4: I'm always in the tight end.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Uh, I haven't been in the receiving room once, but
- 3:03Speaker 3: I know the receivers coach coach Moore Kashif Moore. He
- 3:07Speaker 3: does a great job of, you know, just giving those
- 3:10Speaker 3: those tips and reminders. Uh, you know those cast past
- 3:15Speaker 3: catching skills and stuff like that just reminded me certain things.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Uh.
- 3:18Speaker 3: So I do get feedback from the receiver's room, but
- 3:21Speaker 3: I spend most of my time in Titan room.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And that's a big tight end room.
- 3:25Speaker 2: The guys that you have, you might be the smallest
- 3:28Speaker 2: of the tight ends, and that's not a knock on
- 3:30Speaker 2: you because of your athleticism. But to see some of
- 3:32Speaker 2: those big guys like say alex Or or even Lewin,
- 3:35Speaker 2: some of the younger guys, I mean, that's a big room,
- 3:37Speaker 2: isn't it.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got a very big room, a lot of size,
- 3:40Speaker 3: a lot of depth all the way around.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Uh.
- 3:42Speaker 3: You know a lot of young guys in there. Two,
- 3:44Speaker 3: so we got we got a lot of experience in
- 3:46Speaker 3: there too.
- 3:47Speaker 2: You come over from North Carolina State, You played with
- 3:51Speaker 2: a former Husky justin Jolie for a year. Was there
- 3:55Speaker 2: any conversation between you two when you Kin came on
- 3:58Speaker 2: your radar?
- 4:00Speaker 4: That wasn't It wasn't any conversation.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Uh, you know, obviously I took that into account of
- 4:05Speaker 3: account that he came from Yukon and how he was
- 4:08Speaker 3: using how much production you had at Yukon. I took
- 4:12Speaker 3: that into consideration, but it wasn't any conversation between me
- 4:16Speaker 3: and him. My decision to come here more between me
- 4:20Speaker 3: and the staff.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah, what was your what sold you on to come?
- 4:23Speaker 1: The stories?
- 4:24Speaker 4: For one?
- 4:25Speaker 3: Uh, you know my family. I brought my family up here.
- 4:28Speaker 3: We met with the staff. I just loved how they
- 4:32Speaker 3: plan to use me. And then you know the people
- 4:34Speaker 3: they are, They're great people all the way around.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Coach Moore is a great, great guy. Like great guy.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Uh, it's a coach that you want to play for
- 4:43Speaker 3: for real, Like you know, everybody wants to dream coach.
- 4:46Speaker 3: That's that's the dream coach right there. He's a great
- 4:48Speaker 3: guy all the way around, on the field and all
- 4:49Speaker 3: the field.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Does it help to I imagine that the NFL experience.
- 4:53Speaker 2: He knows what it takes for guys to get to
- 4:55Speaker 2: the next level.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yes, sir, that that was another part of his background
- 5:00Speaker 3: in seven years in the pros, you know, that's my
- 5:03Speaker 3: main goal is to make it to the NFL and
- 5:06Speaker 3: then play for a good amount of time. So knowing
- 5:10Speaker 3: that he was there and that he has that background
- 5:13Speaker 3: and experience. It's helped me maybe more comfortable with choosing Yukon.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Now I'm gonna guess juice as a nickname, Yes, yes,
- 5:22Speaker 2: it is all right. Where did that originate?
- 5:24Speaker 3: From birth? That was from I was a ten pound baby.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Juicy baby, juice baby. You know, I always had a
- 5:33Speaker 3: juice bottle with my hand. I always drinking juice like
- 5:37Speaker 3: that come from childhood.
- 5:38Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, multi sport athlete growing up? Did you
- 5:42Speaker 2: play any other sports other than football?
- 5:44Speaker 4: Yeah? I played baseball, basketball.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And I run trick baseball.
- 5:47Speaker 4: What position centerfield? I caught?
- 5:49Speaker 3: I played catcher. I played anywhere in the center field,
- 5:52Speaker 3: I mean outfield.
- 5:53Speaker 2: That's tremendous. I like catchers. You got to have a
- 5:56Speaker 2: certain mentality to be a catcher. Did that help you
- 5:58Speaker 2: in any other sports? Like you you be a multi
- 6:00Speaker 2: sport athlete. Coaches like that because there's so many different
- 6:04Speaker 2: motions for your body and different things that you have
- 6:07Speaker 2: to do that maybe translate to football.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Yeah, catching in center field and a catcher both my
- 6:15Speaker 3: hand and out of coordination. As long as tracking the ball,
- 6:17Speaker 3: you know, like you got to check the ball in
- 6:19Speaker 3: the center field. You have to track the ball behind
- 6:21Speaker 3: the plate, just your arness, So it helped with multiple things.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Baseball was one of my favorite sports besides football.
- 6:29Speaker 4: If it wasn't football, it was definitely gonna be baseball.
- 6:31Speaker 4: So I still have a lot of love for the game.
- 6:34Speaker 2: All Right, we're down to the final three in baseball.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Who's your favorite team growing.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Up the Phillies. I'm a Bright Happer fan.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Okay, nice football fan, football team Panthers.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Very nice.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I know it's early in the week. What have you
- 6:48Speaker 2: seen of the Rice defense so far?
- 6:50Speaker 3: If anything, Rice Demis is a pretty good team all
- 6:53Speaker 3: the way around. I got to this more film on
- 6:56Speaker 3: them as of right now, you know today just you know,
- 6:58Speaker 3: putting everything else behind us and no today were focusing
- 7:01Speaker 3: on Rice.
- 7:02Speaker 4: But they got a pretty good team all the way around.
- 7:05Speaker 3: It's gonna be a good one. And you just can't wait.
- 7:08Speaker 3: And school's going well, school is going great. Just looking
- 7:11Speaker 3: on and finished off. Got one more year left and
- 7:14Speaker 3: be graduated. There you go, Juice, thanks for a few minutes.
