- 0:11What's going on everybody
- 0:15welcome live from Fort Worth, Texas
- 0:39Gladstone Media interview, podcast,
- 0:42whatever we're calling this.
- 0:43But Coach Krispy Kreme is back on the air.
- 0:45What's going on, brother?
- 0:46Back, finally.
- 0:48We've only been trying to do
- 0:48this for two and a half months.
- 0:51Yeah.
- 0:52Something ridiculous.
- 0:54It's been crazy.
- 0:55So crazy.
- 0:58But you are back for your
- 0:59second year coaching individual athletes.
- 1:03Yeah.
- 1:04At the CrossFit Games.
- 1:06Easier year two or harder?
- 1:12Um, that's a really good question.
- 1:14A little easier, uh, in some ways,
- 1:20just kind of know what to expect,
- 1:23done it once before,
- 1:24kind of have an idea of
- 1:26things I tried that work,
- 1:27things I tried that didn't work, right?
- 1:29Like those kinds of things.
- 1:30Uh, but I would say still challenging,
- 1:35you know,
- 1:37With Dave kind of taken over this year,
- 1:39the individual side,
- 1:42How much difference have you already seen?
- 1:45Oh, it's the work capacity games again.
- 1:49By far.
- 1:51Boz was much more interested
- 1:52in execution and precision.
- 1:57And Dave is about testing
- 2:01massive amounts of work
- 2:02capacity across the weekend
- 2:04in various ways.
- 2:07I think that's pretty clear,
- 2:09even just by what's been
- 2:10announced so far.
- 2:12So you and Hattie checked in yesterday.
- 2:16Yes, yesterday.
- 2:18How did that go?
- 2:19It was good.
- 2:20It was really well run, seamless.
- 2:23GoRuck did a good job.
- 2:27The other vendors and booths
- 2:29that were there were cool.
- 2:30The other partners and sponsors.
- 2:32It was a lot of fun.
- 2:33It was very well run, smooth.
- 2:37It was nice.
- 2:38Not like
- 2:39waiting around for a long
- 2:40time to do anything,
- 2:41but you weren't rushed either.
- 2:42So it was cool.
- 2:45How many takes did the jump
- 2:47take for you to get the right one?
- 2:49A few.
- 2:52I got in trouble with the
- 2:53photographer because my arm
- 2:54kept coming up and blocking the light.
- 2:57So it was, it was messing up the shot.
- 2:58So I had to think about what
- 2:59I was doing with my hand
- 3:00when we were doing that.
- 3:01But yeah, that was a lot of fun.
- 3:02They played music for him, for her.
- 3:04She was like, I wasn't music to, you know,
- 3:06when she was doing her
- 3:07stuff and it was cool.
- 3:09It was really fun.
- 3:10What made me happy is seeing the,
- 3:14this in the jump while jumping.
- 3:17Yeah.
- 3:18Yeah.
- 3:18She pulled it off.
- 3:20Yeah,
- 3:22that's our little sign to each other.
- 3:24Yeah.
- 3:25It's like her thing now, like this.
- 3:27Yeah.
- 3:28Yeah.
- 3:30So Kelly and Hattie are very
- 3:34different athletes,
- 3:36very different people.
- 3:40What is the biggest
- 3:41difference you see this
- 3:42year taking care of Hattie
- 3:46as opposed to taking care of Kelly?
- 3:51Kind of the vibe they like, I think.
- 3:54Kelly, I mean, she's just so like – right?
- 4:00Like she got to Madison a day before me.
- 4:03She like was – like had her hotel room,
- 4:06had her rental car, like da-da-da-da-da,
- 4:08all these things.
- 4:08Obviously,
- 4:09it's a little different to the
- 4:09games being in Fort Worth.
- 4:11Like Hattie came down.
- 4:12We drove up from Houston.
- 4:15Versus this year,
- 4:17we're at a massive Airbnb with family,
- 4:21coach, my fiance's here,
- 4:23kind of like her whole tribe.
- 4:26Whereas Kelly had space for
- 4:29her to just kind of go
- 4:29completely decompress and
- 4:31things like that.
- 4:32So a little bit different
- 4:34for I think what the energy
- 4:36they need from how they
- 4:38decompress and stuff in
- 4:40competition and the vibe.
- 4:43And then
- 4:45I mean,
- 4:45preparing them for the games in
- 4:47terms of the nuts and bolts
- 4:48was quite different because
- 4:50they're just very different
- 4:52athletes when it comes to
- 4:53some of the physiology
- 4:56stuff and training and all that stuff.
- 5:00So Corey says, and we're on a hot mic.
- 5:04Am I too loud?
- 5:05It could be me because...
- 5:09You're fine to me.
- 5:10Okay.
- 5:10Am I good to you?
- 5:12You're good to me.
- 5:13But I'm sure there's a ton
- 5:14of background noise from me
- 5:15just because I don't have a
- 5:16headset and we've got people here.
- 5:19This is the first time I've used this.
- 5:21Okay.
- 5:22So I don't know the volume of it.
- 5:24You said no, you didn't, Scott.
- 5:27Yeah, we're good.
- 5:28All right.
- 5:28We're good.
- 5:30All right.
- 5:32So you did Madison last year.
- 5:34Now you're in Texas.
- 5:36Yeah.
- 5:36Yeah.
- 5:39Yeah.
- 5:39We left my house at 9 a.m.
- 5:44Monday morning and got to
- 5:46CrossFit Westwood at 1.30
- 5:50to move around and get her
- 5:54loose and get settled.
- 5:57Okay.
- 5:58It was pretty nice.
- 5:59Not going to lie.
- 6:01Filled up the truck.
- 6:03with the recovery stuff and food and,
- 6:07you know, my suitcase, her suitcase,
- 6:08I'll just made the travel a lot easier.
- 6:14I personally,
- 6:15just from a media perspective,
- 6:17love when I can drive to the event,
- 6:19because I can take everything.
- 6:21Yeah, right.
- 6:22And I don't have to worry
- 6:23about forgetting anything.
- 6:27How much was it an ease of
- 6:29your mind that you knew you
- 6:31could drive it if you had to?
- 6:33Oh, it was a ton of ease to my mind.
- 6:36It even led to me doing goofy stuff.
- 6:38Like I brought my cowboy
- 6:40boots and a pair of jeans.
- 6:41And anytime I've went to the venue so far,
- 6:43I've been in those like,
- 6:46because that's really easy to just,
- 6:47you know,
- 6:47toss my boots in the back of the
- 6:49truck and do that.
- 6:51Versus if I had to get on an airplane,
- 6:53I'd be like, man,
- 6:54this is really worth the space.
- 6:55So, yeah.
- 6:59Yeah.
- 6:59So is that going to be the whole weekend?
- 7:02So it never intended to be.
- 7:07At first,
- 7:07I was just going to do it at
- 7:08check-in just for fun.
- 7:11I think I have this internal
- 7:14shtick in my brain where we
- 7:16all want CrossFit to be a
- 7:17professional sport,
- 7:18but we all dress like we
- 7:19just went to 24-hour fitness,
- 7:22even the coaches.
- 7:24And I'm not saying we need
- 7:25to be in three-piece suits all the time,
- 7:27like basketball or something.
- 7:29But I was like, maybe, you know,
- 7:30we can be progressive with
- 7:32the dress code.
- 7:32So I wore my jeans and my boots.
- 7:36I was going to wear a polo,
- 7:37but I forgot one.
- 7:38And I don't have a, like,
- 7:39branded one for Ascend.
- 7:42So that was as far as it was
- 7:44ever meant to go.
- 7:45And then one of my other coaches, he said,
- 7:48you should wear it again
- 7:49today to the orientation.
- 7:50I was like, all right,
- 7:51I'll wear it again today.
- 7:53So I wore it again today to orientation.
- 7:54Um,
- 7:56I don't know that I'm going to be at
- 7:59the lake in it tomorrow.
- 8:02Um, it is warm.
- 8:04It, the temperature here,
- 8:06I know people are going to
- 8:07tell me I'm crazy.
- 8:09It feels a lot better than
- 8:10Houston just cause it's not as humid.
- 8:12Like it's hot,
- 8:13but it's not nearly as humid.
- 8:15So I can still get away with
- 8:17wearing jeans and not
- 8:18sweating profusely immediately.
- 8:20Um,
- 8:21So I don't know.
- 8:22We might have some events at
- 8:25Dickie's in the jeans and boots again.
- 8:26I'm going to have to wash these.
- 8:28I only brought one pair of jeans.
- 8:30So I have to figure that out.
- 8:32But I don't know.
- 8:33We'll have to see.
- 8:34Well, you're in an Airbnb.
- 8:38That's different from last year, right?
- 8:40Oh, yeah.
- 8:41Yeah.
- 8:41I was in a hotel for like nine days.
- 8:46Yeah.
- 8:47So you have that ability to
- 8:48do laundry and.
- 8:50cook or whatever.
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:53I haven't brought my own
- 8:53laundry detergent.
- 8:55Easy.
- 8:56Yeah, I got in today.
- 8:59What a mess.
- 9:00But I got in today, got to the hotel.
- 9:03I have not eaten since I got
- 9:05up this morning.
- 9:08And finally just door dashed something in.
- 9:11But there are actually
- 9:12restaurants across the street,
- 9:13but it was so freaking hot.
- 9:15For me, this door deter, like...
- 9:18Let's save my energy for
- 9:20later in the weekend.
- 9:21It's warm.
- 9:22I'm not going to deny that it's hot.
- 9:23I'm not going to be that
- 9:25quintessential southerner that's like,
- 9:27it's not hot out here.
- 9:28No, it's hot.
- 9:31I'm just used to worse conditions.
- 9:34Yeah,
- 9:35I think it was 103 when I came in today.
- 9:38Yeah.
- 9:40So the only thing that
- 9:42really has bothered me
- 9:43about the heat so far is
- 9:46tap water is not cold.
- 9:50Yep.
- 9:50I didn't even think that
- 9:54that would be a thing.
- 9:55Yeah.
- 9:56In the north, you turn on the tap water,
- 10:00you get cold water from under the ground,
- 10:02right?
- 10:02Yeah.
- 10:04And here, you turn on the tap water,
- 10:05and it's still lukewarm.
- 10:08I love that.
- 10:09Yeah, it is.
- 10:11Yeah.
- 10:11And that's something I would
- 10:12have never even thought
- 10:14about because I just put
- 10:15ice in all my water.
- 10:18Yeah, don't have that in the hotel room.
- 10:20See, you're in the Airbnb.
- 10:22See, another case for the Airbnb.
- 10:25Yeah.
- 10:27Corey says,
- 10:28you're going to have to do
- 10:29Jamie's laundry in Birmingham.
- 10:31Not enough uniforms.
- 10:33Yeah, if so, I'll do it.
- 10:35No biggie.
- 10:36Just a little laundry.
- 10:39Yeah.
- 10:41Not a problem here.
- 10:42They got, looks like the whole...
- 10:46Line of clothing from Goruck.
- 10:48Lots of swag, lots of uniforms.
- 10:51It was cool.
- 10:52Goruck did some cool stuff
- 10:53with some of the apparel too,
- 10:55with the way they did the flags,
- 10:58the way they put their names on there,
- 11:00the country, sewn some stuff on.
- 11:03The backpacks have like an
- 11:05embroidered patch, I think,
- 11:06or like a depressed patch
- 11:07with their initials.
- 11:09They did some cool stuff.
- 11:12Yeah.
- 11:13Coaches get anything or just a wristband?
- 11:16It's the same thing as always.
- 11:18We stand there,
- 11:19we get a wristband and we
- 11:20get told all the things we can't do.
- 11:23Yeah.
- 11:25Kenneth asks,
- 11:26so is Yeti the title sponsor?
- 11:28To my understanding,
- 11:28there is no title sponsor.
- 11:32There are just sponsors of things.
- 11:35I guess.
- 11:37Yeah.
- 11:37I saw the,
- 11:38I briefly saw when I was on Instagram,
- 11:40I saw the little Hiller thing with Yeti.
- 11:43I think Goruck's the sponsor
- 11:47but the way it was released
- 11:50in the press release was
- 11:51they were the apparel
- 11:52sponsor so I guess that's
- 11:57all they are I get here's
- 11:59my if you look at the
- 12:00CrossFit Games logo it does
- 12:02not have any name other
- 12:04than 2024 CrossFit Games
- 12:06that's true if it was a
- 12:08title sponsor there would
- 12:09be a brand name in that
- 12:11logo right that's true
- 12:16And I have not seen that as of yet.
- 12:18Now, I was on a plane all day today,
- 12:21so who knows?
- 12:22My social media presence has
- 12:25been about zero today.
- 12:29Yeah, actually,
- 12:29just when we went on the air,
- 12:31it looks like they
- 12:31announced team events two and three.
- 12:36I feel so bad, but I'm such a...
- 12:39I mean, I don't feel super bad about it,
- 12:41but I do enjoy watching the
- 12:43team competition and
- 12:44knowing what the events are, you know,
- 12:46that kind of stuff.
- 12:48One of our Ascend coaches is on a team.
- 12:49I have friends on teams,
- 12:53but when I'm something like
- 12:55the games in go mode the whole time,
- 12:58I probably won't be able to
- 13:00tell you three of the team
- 13:02events at the end of the weekend.
- 13:05Just.
- 13:06And last year, I knew all of them,
- 13:09obviously, because of Einhorn.
- 13:10But this year, I'm like, nope,
- 13:12not my priority, not important,
- 13:15don't have bandwidth for it.
- 13:18Yeah, totally understandable.
- 13:22So as a coach,
- 13:24you have three events a day until Sunday.
- 13:27I don't have a script,
- 13:31so we're just going on the fly.
- 13:33How disappointed...
- 13:36I was disappointed when I
- 13:37saw that event six was not
- 13:40a double scored event.
- 13:49I wasn't overly surprised it wasn't.
- 13:52I figured it would be initially.
- 13:55But I had thought in the
- 13:56back of my head they could
- 13:58make it some sort of combined score.
- 14:01And if I am correct,
- 14:03the way they're doing it
- 14:05know if you get second and
- 14:06second you have four points
- 14:09and then that'll just rank
- 14:10you for your total you know
- 14:12placing kind of like the
- 14:14open right I like that a
- 14:19lot for an event like that
- 14:23personally because if
- 14:28you're not good at both of
- 14:30the time domains of running
- 14:33you can't try to hide
- 14:35on the leaderboard with a
- 14:36win and a low finish.
- 14:40Like it helps a little,
- 14:42but I like that it's
- 14:44balanced a little bit more in that sense.
- 14:49I do think it's,
- 14:50I was expecting 12 total events though.
- 14:52I will say that.
- 14:55But what we were talking
- 14:58about a moment ago with Dave's
- 15:02proclivity to test a lot of
- 15:04work capacity and the way
- 15:06he writes workouts,
- 15:08we may see all the events
- 15:09and look back and be like, you know,
- 15:11we didn't need 12.
- 15:15Right.
- 15:17Well,
- 15:17just because that isn't double scored,
- 15:19doesn't mean we're not
- 15:20going to get a double
- 15:21scored event on Sunday
- 15:23where there's only two events, right.
- 15:24Or two slots.
- 15:27Right.
- 15:28Right.
- 15:29So I could see a potential
- 15:32double score on one of the
- 15:33events in the last day or
- 15:35like a two parter for sure.
- 15:39I just felt the two Friday
- 15:40night events were both valid tests.
- 15:45Yeah.
- 15:45I mean, they're different for sure.
- 15:47Right.
- 15:47It's roughly testing through
- 15:49the same modality, but it's not exactly,
- 15:52it's,
- 15:53it's like a combined test the way they,
- 15:55the way the second portion
- 15:57starts at 12 minutes.
- 16:00So by doing it that way,
- 16:01you're testing the mile
- 16:06ability and that kind of
- 16:08energy system and speed.
- 16:10And then they're testing
- 16:11your recovery and then
- 16:14going into a very high
- 16:15intensity sprint with some load.
- 16:20So I think I would...
- 16:24guess potentially the reason
- 16:25it scored the way it is is
- 16:27because of how he wanted
- 16:29the test to like play out
- 16:31and feel okay potentially
- 16:38um with what you know so
- 16:41far how are you feeling
- 16:44with hattie going into the
- 16:45weekend I'm excited for I think
- 16:50you know,
- 16:51all the workouts we've found out
- 16:53so far are good workouts for her,
- 16:56good tests.
- 16:57I mean, we've got a long run and a swim.
- 17:00We've got a running dominant workout,
- 17:03got some rope climbs, you know,
- 17:06stuff like that.
- 17:06I,
- 17:07I'm excited for her to just go kind of
- 17:09like she did at semifinals.
- 17:11And that's the mindset we're
- 17:12taking with this is go run
- 17:14Hattie's race and go
- 17:15showcase your hard work.
- 17:18If you were a professor and,
- 17:21And you gave her your final
- 17:23exam at semifinals.
- 17:26She aced it until the final event.
- 17:30You sure?
- 17:31Her and I talked.
- 17:34She found out from an
- 17:35outside source that she had clinched.
- 17:40Do you think that was the
- 17:41crux of everything?
- 17:42Or did you need to work on
- 17:44something from that point
- 17:46till this till now?
- 17:49I mean,
- 17:50we definitely went back and
- 17:52addressed some, you know, lunging,
- 17:56ring muscle ups.
- 17:57Like we put a small premium
- 18:00on those events or those movements.
- 18:04But I do think a lot of that
- 18:07was what she had talked
- 18:08about with just where her
- 18:10head was at going into that last event,
- 18:14knowing that she had clinched.
- 18:17and just kind of had a weird
- 18:19kind of emotional response to it.
- 18:24What a wild sport when
- 18:25you're the only athlete
- 18:27going into the final event
- 18:28who has clinched a spot and
- 18:31you fall off the podium.
- 18:33Right?
- 18:35Yeah.
- 18:36Yeah, that was a crazy just, what,
- 18:40four minutes of my life and her life.
- 18:45But, I mean...
- 18:47Gosh,
- 18:47I'd like to learn that lesson when
- 18:48you've clinched.
- 18:50True.
- 18:51Not on the bubble, right?
- 18:54Which was better than last
- 18:55year when you had the same
- 18:57catastrophe on the final event of semis,
- 18:59but you had to wait.
- 19:0215 minutes.
- 19:04What did I text you right after the event?
- 19:06I'm cursed.
- 19:07Yeah.
- 19:08It's not them.
- 19:09It's me.
- 19:11Two years in a row, two different athletes,
- 19:13different venue.
- 19:16Last event, shenanigans.
- 19:17It's not them.
- 19:18It's me.
- 19:18I'm cursed.
- 19:22Yeah, I was losing my mind on the stream.
- 19:26Yeah, that was wild.
- 19:28I mean,
- 19:29that was a learning moment for me
- 19:30as a coach.
- 19:31That was a learning moment
- 19:32for her as an athlete.
- 19:35But, again,
- 19:35would rather learn those
- 19:36lessons in the position we
- 19:38were in than on the bubble,
- 19:40outside looking in, something like that.
- 19:43So in our talks,
- 19:45I know you're a geek for
- 19:47this coaching thing, right?
- 19:49You try to suck up as much
- 19:50knowledge as you can.
- 19:51How would you grade your
- 19:56improvement from last
- 19:58season to this season as a coach?
- 20:06I would say...
- 20:11I'm pretty stingy with my
- 20:14own grading of myself.
- 20:16I generally think I can always do better.
- 20:20So I'll try to be generous
- 20:22with myself and say I got an A minus.
- 20:26Other people might say I've done better,
- 20:28but you've known me a
- 20:31decent bit of time now.
- 20:32And my fiance could
- 20:33definitely tell you my
- 20:34default operating system is
- 20:37you're not good enough.
- 20:39So hard for me to
- 20:41be generous with myself sometimes,
- 20:43but I'm trying to get better at it.
- 20:47I learned a ton last year.
- 20:51Being blessed to be in the
- 20:52situation with training Kelly,
- 20:54training Hattie, training Madison,
- 20:56training Savannah, training Jacob,
- 20:58all for semifinals, then
- 21:01continuing to train and the
- 21:02team and then continuing to
- 21:04train Kelly and the team
- 21:06for the games that
- 21:09definitely allowed me to be
- 21:12a lot smarter in my
- 21:14approach for this year for
- 21:16semifinals and then definitely the games.
- 21:21I also just think there's no
- 21:25replacement for time with
- 21:27an athlete to learn them.
- 21:30right like I being able to
- 21:34coach hattie for a whole
- 21:35nother 365 days like we
- 21:38learned so much last year
- 21:39we trialed things in the
- 21:41summer we had conversations
- 21:43we learned things we went
- 21:44and did outfit like learned
- 21:46things there like we
- 21:48learned a lot and I had time to
- 21:51continue to understand like
- 21:53the dose response what she
- 21:55needs what she doesn't need
- 21:56what sticks what doesn't
- 21:57stick the frequency and
- 21:59like all of those different
- 22:00things to have a better
- 22:02approach um so it was it
- 22:06was part of the difficulty
- 22:08I think of games prep is or
- 22:11semis prep and then games
- 22:12prep is doing it with two
- 22:14different people but I did
- 22:16have more time with hattie this year
- 22:19our background last year so
- 22:21I could be more strategic
- 22:23right um yeah and if people
- 22:27don't remember most of your
- 22:29athletes came tfx or later
- 22:34yeah yeah except for kelly
- 22:38galley was on a team that
- 22:40you helped with the year
- 22:42before so that was natural
- 22:45and then if we were looking
- 22:47at this like a college football coach
- 22:50you had a hell of a
- 22:51recruiting trip to TFX.
- 22:54Yeah.
- 22:55Yeah.
- 22:57Yeah.
- 22:57I went to TFX and two weeks
- 23:00later had a way busier schedule.
- 23:04Way.
- 23:04Yeah.
- 23:04Cause you,
- 23:05you got Madison Savannah from TFX.
- 23:08Madison Savannah.
- 23:12I had been coaching the team already.
- 23:15So they were already with me.
- 23:17So yeah, Madison, Savannah,
- 23:18and then Hattie came just after TFX.
- 23:22Well,
- 23:26I don't think she was in Houston yet.
- 23:28If she had,
- 23:28she hadn't been there very long.
- 23:31Yeah, I knew it was around that time,
- 23:33but timing's weird.
- 23:35Because she got there, yeah,
- 23:38I want to say it was around that time.
- 23:40She hadn't been to Houston for very long.
- 23:45yeah tfx last year was wild
- 23:51so I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 23:52finish up with this
- 23:53question had justin kotler
- 23:56on not that long ago
- 24:01because of situations that
- 24:04were out of his control he
- 24:06went from a big camp to a
- 24:07little camp and actually talked about how
- 24:13it took him back to like the
- 24:15start with the smaller camp
- 24:18and that he actually really enjoyed it.
- 24:22What do you think the
- 24:23capacity is for an elite CrossFit coach?
- 24:37Are we defining
- 24:41elite as all athletes should
- 24:45potentially should more
- 24:46than likely make the games
- 24:49I think an elite crossfit
- 24:50coach are is someone
- 24:52training people who want to
- 24:54make the games and our
- 24:56semi-final athletes are better um
- 25:11I mean, I think that the,
- 25:13my honest answer to that would be,
- 25:15it depends on how many
- 25:18athletes they coach in general, right?
- 25:21If you,
- 25:23and this might be me and I might be
- 25:25totally wrong,
- 25:26but if I only coached
- 25:29exclusively semifinals
- 25:31level in games athletes,
- 25:33and I had nothing else to do with my time,
- 25:35I didn't coach in an affiliate.
- 25:37I didn't do any of that stuff.
- 25:44two or three games athletes
- 25:46or one in a team and then
- 25:50several semifinals athletes?
- 25:54It's not the nuts and bolts,
- 25:56at least to me.
- 25:57Making people better at
- 25:58exercising fast is really
- 25:59not that complicated, in my opinion.
- 26:02yes,
- 26:02I'm a freaking super nerd and I've
- 26:03been doing this for a long time,
- 26:05just not at this level, but like,
- 26:07that's not hard.
- 26:08What's hard is, oh,
- 26:09you're taking five people
- 26:11to semifinals in the
- 26:13freaking female division
- 26:15and they all want to go to the games.
- 26:16That's fucking hard.
- 26:17Like, what are you supposed to do?
- 26:19You know what I mean?
- 26:20So I think that's more the thing,
- 26:22at least in my opinion, versus just like,
- 26:28watching people do fitness
- 26:29figuring out what they need
- 26:30to do to do it faster
- 26:32having conversations and
- 26:33then writing program
- 26:34designed to do that like
- 26:36that's not that hard in my
- 26:39opinion so truly the hard
- 26:42thing is supporting
- 26:43yourself in this endeavor
- 26:45and that you have to take
- 26:46on even more to be able to
- 26:49do that well I mean
- 26:51depending on the coach in
- 26:52the situation right like
- 26:53yeah um but I also like
- 26:58I love coaching people who
- 27:00are you know on the come up
- 27:04like um I I love coaching
- 27:07games athletes and
- 27:08semifinals athlete like I
- 27:09just love coaching people
- 27:09right like um but it's not
- 27:12like I love coaching
- 27:13because I love coaching not
- 27:15because it's like sure the
- 27:17stakes are higher I guess
- 27:19or the performance metrics
- 27:20are higher but it's not like
- 27:24I just want to coach games athletes.
- 27:26Like those are really fun
- 27:27athletes to coach and it's exciting,
- 27:30but I want to make people better.
- 27:33I guess that's the,
- 27:34the intersection point for
- 27:35like the nerdy side of me
- 27:37and the coach side of me is like,
- 27:40what do I need to give them
- 27:41on the nerdy side and the
- 27:42programming side to help
- 27:43them reach their goal?
- 27:45Or what kind of
- 27:45conversations do we need to have?
- 27:46Or what do I need to teach
- 27:47them about the sport or like,
- 27:50You know, things like that.
- 27:51Like I have an athlete who
- 27:52goes to our affiliate,
- 27:53just as an easy example.
- 27:55He goes to our affiliate.
- 27:56He's a one-on-one athlete of mine.
- 27:58And we've been working
- 27:59together for like a year.
- 28:00He's gotten so much better
- 28:02at so many things.
- 28:03And we've gotten to this
- 28:04kind of funny point in his
- 28:06training where he can kind
- 28:07of do most stuff in good size sets, this,
- 28:12that, and the other.
- 28:13And he's a taller athlete.
- 28:14He's about my height,
- 28:16maybe a smidge taller.
- 28:18And I was watching him train
- 28:19one day and I walked up to him and I said,
- 28:20Hey man, you got to go faster.
- 28:25But he had never gotten to
- 28:27that point where he could
- 28:28do the stuff and then try
- 28:31to do it faster.
- 28:32Right.
- 28:32But it was like, that's where we're at.
- 28:34Like,
- 28:35like we don't need some super secret
- 28:37sauce.
- 28:39fitness protocol right now
- 28:40like we're making sure
- 28:42we're dotting our I's and
- 28:43crossing our T's on like
- 28:44his weaknesses but I need
- 28:47you to learn how to go fast
- 28:51because now you can do the
- 28:52stuff but you need to be
- 28:52able to do it faster right
- 28:55and that's like every
- 28:57athlete at semifinals at
- 28:58games level understands
- 28:59they need to be moving very
- 29:01quickly right it's just
- 29:02like in them at that
- 29:04so it's like there's
- 29:05different learning curves
- 29:06and things like that so I
- 29:07guess it's a very not short
- 29:09answer and kind of a loose
- 29:11answer at that to how many
- 29:14games athletes uh but I
- 29:16think it or semifinals
- 29:17Elite Games athletes but I
- 29:19think it comes down to a
- 29:20lot of the situation right
- 29:21like are they in the same
- 29:22region are they at the same
- 29:24level are they both male
- 29:26are they both female like
- 29:29know are is one of them on a
- 29:31team you know do you coach
- 29:32a team of people and an
- 29:33individual like do you need
- 29:36to coach other athletes to
- 29:38support yourself as a coach
- 29:39well you know and grow a
- 29:41brand or a business or
- 29:43there's just so many things
- 29:44that can play into that but
- 29:45I so I think it varies I i
- 29:49it would be very difficult
- 29:51I think to coach I don't
- 29:53know three people at the
- 29:56games like that would be pretty nuts
- 30:00But I think a lot of that,
- 30:02and maybe this is just me as a coach,
- 30:05because I do get pretty
- 30:06invested in people, is like,
- 30:09how am I emotionally going
- 30:11to be able to cheer for
- 30:12these people all going
- 30:13against each other at the same time?
- 30:14Like, it's just, you know what I mean?
- 30:15Like, if you had three guys or three girls,
- 30:17like, fuck, like,
- 30:18what am I supposed to do here?
- 30:21So that could be tough.
- 30:23Yeah.
- 30:24Because then when they come off the floor,
- 30:25they're all going to come to you.
- 30:28Right.
- 30:30So it's like one's happy,
- 30:32one's sad and one's meh.
- 30:35Right.
- 30:35And it's just like, you know,
- 30:37you can get better at like the, you know,
- 30:40kind of changing your face
- 30:41and all that stuff and
- 30:42meeting them where they are,
- 30:43like with communication
- 30:45experience and stuff like that.
- 30:46But it's still logistically at some point,
- 30:49it's going to be a problem.
- 30:50Like somebody is warming up.
- 30:51Somebody's going on the floor.
- 30:52Somebody is not even here yet.
- 30:53Somebody needs you to get them this.
- 30:54Somebody like it could be pretty crazy.
- 30:57So.
- 30:58I think less is,
- 31:03I think it's almost natural,
- 31:04like the funnel of performance.
- 31:07There are going to be less
- 31:08people who can do certain things, right?
- 31:12Like just as we, from training,
- 31:15training age, genetics, whatever.
- 31:17So I almost think it's kind
- 31:18of like the more you're
- 31:19working with people at that tippy top,
- 31:23the more people you have there,
- 31:24it starts to become more difficult.
- 31:27Right.
- 31:29Well,
- 31:29that answer gave me like 17 follow-ups.
- 31:33We can do a couple if you want.
- 31:35But I need to hop on with
- 31:36Carolyn in a half an hour
- 31:37to preview the games.
- 31:41I love chatting with you.
- 31:44I'm going to leave on this one note.
- 31:47When I was getting my MBA,
- 31:50there was this theory that
- 31:51there are two types of leaders mentors.
- 31:55There's the mentor leader who
- 31:58likes to polish the diamond,
- 32:00like the diamond's there,
- 32:02it's been constructed,
- 32:04but it just needs a little
- 32:06bit of shine to get it over the edge,
- 32:08right?
- 32:09And then there's the other
- 32:10kind who likes to take the
- 32:12piece of coal and mold that
- 32:14diamond themselves.
- 32:15Right.
- 32:18And the theory is that you can't be both.
- 32:21You're either one or the other.
- 32:24Which one are you?
- 32:38You're going to hate me,
- 32:39but I'm going to say when I
- 32:40get Jacob into the games,
- 32:41I'm going to say I'm both.
- 32:44Okay.
- 32:46It was a theory.
- 32:47You can bust theories.
- 32:49I don't buy into that entirely.
- 32:50I totally get because it's
- 32:54two different kinds of people.
- 32:56One's a precision instrument
- 32:58and one's a blunt force instrument.
- 33:01But it depends on the person.
- 33:05You can choose what
- 33:06instrument you need to be.
- 33:09right if you have the
- 33:10capacity to like be aware
- 33:12of it so like I'm not the
- 33:20best at self-categorizing
- 33:21myself which is probably
- 33:22why I want a scapegoat
- 33:23answer and say both uh I
- 33:26also don't know that I
- 33:29don't know if I feel like
- 33:30I'm a polisher or a like a breaker like
- 33:36Because it's all an
- 33:39iterative process on a spectrum.
- 33:43So can I tell you what I think you are?
- 33:46Sure.
- 33:48So I think you're more the latter.
- 33:50A polisher?
- 33:52No.
- 33:53You're a build people up.
- 33:56I can see justification for that.
- 33:58If you look at your stable of athletes,
- 34:01you've never started with,
- 34:05what most people in the
- 34:06industry would call a diamond.
- 34:09Sure.
- 34:10Kelly never made the games before.
- 34:12Right.
- 34:15How do you can, you know,
- 34:15never made the games before
- 34:19and you've taken them from
- 34:20that and you've built them
- 34:22into something special.
- 34:23Yeah.
- 34:26So if you take Jacob to the games,
- 34:28I think you're doing the
- 34:29same thing you've done.
- 34:31Sure.
- 34:32You've not,
- 34:32you've not been given the
- 34:33opportunity for say,
- 34:37I'm just going to – Ariel
- 34:38Lowen wants to coach all of
- 34:39a sudden and comes over, right?
- 34:41That's a completely
- 34:43different starting point
- 34:45than you've ever been in as a coach.
- 34:47Yeah.
- 34:48Yeah, it's a way different starting point.
- 34:51Right.
- 34:52Yeah.
- 34:52And it's not that those –
- 34:54that Kelly and Hattie and
- 34:56Madison weren't great
- 34:57athletes before you got them.
- 34:59Yeah, freaks.
- 35:01They just needed their
- 35:02clarity fixed up and their –
- 35:05cut fixed up you know what I
- 35:06mean like right right right
- 35:08it was a little more than
- 35:09just a polish right was
- 35:11that makes that's where I
- 35:14think you are I can see
- 35:16that I'm good with it but I
- 35:19think in your mind you
- 35:20think you thought they were
- 35:21great when they came to you
- 35:23well yes I do right yeah
- 35:26right so but it I and I
- 35:29think they're great too
- 35:30I've I've been a fan of
- 35:31kelly's for a long time
- 35:33And Hattie,
- 35:34you know how I feel about Hattie.
- 35:36She's the best.
- 35:38But the industry,
- 35:39if I was to go to Tommy
- 35:42Marquez and to John Young,
- 35:45you're going to hear stuff
- 35:47that they don't like.
- 35:48Sure.
- 35:50Right?
- 35:51Right.
- 35:52So that's where I think you are.
- 35:55And that's why I think you're so cool.
- 35:57Thank you.
- 36:00Well, this has been fun, man.
- 36:01I can't wait to see you in person.
- 36:03Yeah, seriously.
- 36:04I can't wait to see you.
- 36:05Yeah,
- 36:05so I'll be over there tomorrow at the
- 36:07venue.
- 36:07Sweet.
- 36:08Got in too late to get my
- 36:09credentials and go to
- 36:12immediate orientation.
- 36:13So I don't even know where
- 36:14I'm allowed to be yet.
- 36:15Just going to figure it out on the fly.
- 36:17Yeah.
- 36:18That's all good.
- 36:19That's how we roll most of
- 36:20the time anyway.
- 36:22Sometimes that's just how it's better.
- 36:23Just be adaptable.
- 36:27Yeah, just go do my thing.
- 36:28Just hope there's a seat
- 36:30left for me to sit in.
- 36:33I'm sure there will be a seat.
- 36:36All right, Tristan.
- 36:37Well, thank you so much.
- 36:38Good luck to you and Hattie this weekend.
- 36:40I'll be rooting from the stands,
- 36:43getting some pictures.
- 36:45And I can't wait to see you over there.
- 36:48Can't wait to see you, man.
- 36:49With that,
- 36:50we will see everybody next time.
- 36:52Glad Cell Media Podcast.
- 36:54Bye, guys.
