- 0:00Speaker 1: And Football at Forest powered by the Inside of the
- 0:02Birds podcast is brought to you by Bett three sixty five.
- 0:04Whatever the sport, whatever the moment, it's never ordinary at
- 0:07BET three six five. Jeff Moocher in for Adam Kaplan today.
- 0:11Most was over at Eagles training camp and we talked
- 0:15about it earlier with Kean Myers on The Sports Best.
- 0:17Eagles made a trade, Thomas Booker heads to Vegas. Jaquorian
- 0:21Bennett is coming to Philadelphia. How does he fit in
- 0:25to this Philadelphia Eagles defense that will be first and
- 0:28formers foremost. Plus, you heard from Nick Sirianni about a
- 0:31half an hour ago. We had the press conference for
- 0:33you live right here on ninety seven three ESPN, so
- 0:37we'll get some takeaways from that and everything happening as
- 0:39the Eagles get ready to take on the Cincinnati Bengals,
- 0:42who Jeff Moscher tweeted subtweeted a little while ago from
- 0:46Ann Rappaport. Looks like the Bengals are going to play
- 0:49their actual big name players on Thursday Night for several series,
- 0:54So that's good news to hear. The Eagles will get
- 0:56to see Joe Burrow and some other players there. But
- 0:58first Jeff Mosher a trade last night Howie Roseman saw
- 1:03all the fireworks going off at Citizens Bank Park, he
- 1:06had to get involved and made a trade. On the surface,
- 1:08he's Hee Thomas Booker, the fourth kind of a rotational,
- 1:13low level, rotational player. Not a lot of snaps, not
- 1:16a lot of impact, which I like Booker. I thought
- 1:18he should have got more of a shot here. A
- 1:19little surprised that he wasn't more in the mix. But
- 1:21for whatever reason, he's traded out to Vegas Jaquarian Bennett
- 1:25in return. Now, some people might say, Okay, this is
- 1:27just swapping too low bottom of the roster guys, But
- 1:32not so fast. Q Myers was on with us earlier
- 1:35from Raider Nation Radio. He loves Bennett. He thinks Bennett's
- 1:38a starting player and you know, perplexed at the Raiders.
- 1:42Now he knows why because he doesn't fit into Pete
- 1:43Carroll's system. But do you look at this trade as
- 1:46adding a guy that could compete for a starting job.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah, Mike, I mean he can compete for a starting job.
- 1:53There's plenty left in camp. He's a guy that profiles
- 1:57really will athletically, even though he's a little undersized. Think
- 1:59he's I've nine ten, So he'll get into the mix,
- 2:04he'll practice, he'll work. This is the case where so
- 2:08the Raiders have a new coaching staff, Pete Carroll. We
- 2:11always know when when Pete Carroll's coach to the team,
- 2:13he likes certain kind of specificities for foreigners. You remember
- 2:17the Legion of Boom. They had tall, physical foreigners, Brandon
- 2:20Browner did Byron Maxwell, Richard Shermam. And this is the
- 2:25case where Gjakorean, as I was told, for some people,
- 2:28I know new organizations just wasn't necessarily a fit for them.
- 2:31But you know, they had that ordeal with Christian Wilkins,
- 2:34that defensive tackle that they parted ways with, and they
- 2:37needed some defensive line depth. And Booker can go there
- 2:40and get more time, get more snaps, definitely get a
- 2:43lot more time than he would have gotten here with
- 2:45the Eagles, because yes, even though he would have made
- 2:47the team, and I heard you say, Mike, they could
- 2:50have played him more. I mean, it's it's really tough
- 2:53when you've got Jalen Carter, Moro, Jomo Jordan Davis. That's
- 2:57two first round picks and then a guy who's playing
- 2:59really well and it's going to start, especially in their
- 3:02five man front and their four man pass rush most likely.
- 3:05And then behind that you have a guy in Gabe
- 3:07Hall in year two at a Baylor who's a really
- 3:10good athlete and starting to really put it together here
- 3:12in camp. So there just wasn't that much opportunity for
- 3:15a guy like Bookford to really assert himself. I think
- 3:17he played less than eighteen percent of the snatch last year.
- 3:20Probably was going to be that or fewer unless there
- 3:23were injuries. And now you got a corner in Clease
- 3:25and Pete with a Dori Jacks and with Killy Ringo
- 3:29obviously to try to be a starter.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Well, and yesterday Vic Fangio Jeff we talked a little
- 3:34bit about it, you know, he asked, was asked about
- 3:36the competition at that spot Ringo and a Doorri Jackson says,
- 3:40it's close, but is it close enough where he was
- 3:43maybe keeping an eye on somebody else the factor in here.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know he was keeping an eye on
- 3:50somebody else. I mean, I think it's a case where
- 3:53they want to add more competition. They know that it's
- 3:56an unsettled spot.
- 3:58Speaker 1: You know.
- 3:59Speaker 2: One of the things that's going to be very interesting
- 4:00about the sketchgic coorianvented is that he has very little
- 4:04special teams background. I think if you go look at
- 4:07his special team stamps over to the two years, it's scant,
- 4:10to say the least. And usually if you're not a
- 4:12starting foreigner, if you're a backup corner, you've got to
- 4:15be able to play special teams. Kealey Ringo was one
- 4:17of the better special teams players on the team and
- 4:19in the league last year. So the question is what
- 4:22do you do with your Corey eventet if he winds
- 4:25up not making it as a starter with his lack
- 4:28of special teams experience.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Well, was he kind of a replacement? All? Is he
- 4:31kind of a replacement for Isaiah Rogers? I mean, is
- 4:33that a guy that you can kind of say, hey,
- 4:35there's a lot of similarities possibly there.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Well, I mean he's got good athleticism that really jumps out.
- 4:41We'll have to see it in camp. He has to
- 4:43learn the defense. That's not going to be easy because
- 4:46Vick's defense, especially with how he deploys his corners in
- 4:50pattern matching or his own matching, is not simple. So
- 4:56I think that we're just I don't want to say
- 4:58we're far. I mean, this guy's gonna get a lot
- 5:01of ref it's gonna play in preseason games and we'll see.
- 5:04But I don't know that this necessarily moves the needle
- 5:07that much yet in this competition. And I guess what
- 5:10I would add to that is, if they're really not
- 5:12happy with their quarnerback picture between a Tory Jackson and
- 5:17Chiley Ringo at the end of the camp, it wouldn't
- 5:19surprise me of how he made a move to bring
- 5:21in sort of a more established corner for this deaf Then.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Jeff Bosher football at four Eagles training camp continues obviously
- 5:27getting ready for Thursday night against the Bengals. So they're
- 5:30ramping things up here. One of the things they lose,
- 5:33I'll say they lose they decide to trade Booker. He
- 5:36was not part of the rotation. So what's kind of
- 5:38left over? You mentioned Ojobo, Gabe Hall, Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis.
- 5:42It seems like they're pretty set at that spot now.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, they've kept a lot before.
- 5:49I probably don't need to keep more than five or six.
- 5:52But yeah, between Carter Davis, A Jomo and Tyra Robinson,
- 5:57of course, is gonna factor into the equation. He's a
- 6:00rookie they drafted in the fourth round. He's swimming a
- 6:02little bit right now, but I'm sure by the end
- 6:04of camp you'll see more. So that's four, Gabe haul five,
- 6:08and then there's a shot that by were and young.
- 6:10He's dealing with a little injury right now, but he's
- 6:12a potential guy at six. So you don't have to
- 6:16keep sixty ts. The Eagles have done that before. In fact,
- 6:19I think two years ago they kept seven, right if
- 6:21I'm not mistaken. Then they wound up trading one of
- 6:24them I can't remember his name right now to the
- 6:26Falcons in the middle of the year. But so they
- 6:30do like to go heavy at that position, but you
- 6:32still have enough bodies and young developmental guys here to
- 6:35do that.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Booker obviously heads out to Vegas and I actually
- 6:39I think you're talking about Contavious Street, by the way,
- 6:42who was traded to the Falcons. I think Booker was
- 6:44a guy that you're right, just kind of got in
- 6:46a number shuffle. What you saw from him. He flashed
- 6:48at times last year, just couldn't get on the field.
- 6:50So Bennett in Philly Booker in Vegas. We'll see how
- 6:54that works out. The defensive tackle position a deep one
- 6:57for Philadelphia. And then as you talk about that corner room,
- 6:59you got Eli Rix Ringo because a couple of years
- 7:03ago you had all these young corners Josh Joel, we
- 7:06kept hearing about Ringo and Rix kind of remain So
- 7:09we'll see how that position shakes out. Do we think
- 7:11it will shake out starting Thursday night?
- 7:15Speaker 2: Oh yeah, absolutely. You know I think that this is
- 7:17not gonna be like last year's preseason where no starters played.
- 7:22I mean it's because we don't know who starters are yet.
- 7:24Man to see me Scangelo has to figure that out.
- 7:27So he needs to see Killy Ringo compete. He needs
- 7:30to see like Jeremiah Trotter Junior get some snaps. I
- 7:33would imagine. He needs to see the young safety Sydney
- 7:36Brown mccuba, who was able to do some practicing today
- 7:39as he's coming back from that shoulder injury. He needs
- 7:43to see these guys play, and some of these guys
- 7:45could be starters.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Most good, right, it's good. It's good.
- 7:49Speaker 2: You're gonna see Burrow and Higgins, I guess, and Tamar
- 7:51Chase out there because that you're getting legit competition for them.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt. Well, and I want to get your
- 7:56take on I know, today mccooba on the field, he
- 7:59probably won't play on Thursday night, but more snaps for
- 8:04Cooper Dejene at safety. I mean we started to get
- 8:06a feel that this could be a potential, a real
- 8:10potential that he could get some legit snaps at safety.
- 8:12Or is this just like, hey, he'll be base defense only,
- 8:15maybe five to ten snaps a game in that spot.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Probably base defense only. But I will say this, I
- 8:22think as they're starting to ramp him up just to
- 8:24see what they got today. There were times in seven
- 8:27on sevens and I think even in Levens where the
- 8:30offense was in a nickel three wide receiver deployment, and
- 8:34yet you would see the Eagles in a base defense
- 8:38with Cooper to Gene at safety. So I kept saying,
- 8:41why would you want to counter a three wide formation
- 8:44with your base defense? Is that just to get Dejene
- 8:47some looks there? I mean, obviously you're not at an
- 8:49advantageous point, but maybe that's what they were doing, or
- 8:53maybe they just, you know, sometimes Johnny Wilson is one
- 8:55of those receivers, and he's kind of like a big,
- 8:57sort of extra tight end, so it looks like twelve personnel.
- 9:00But either way, the point I'm trying to make is
- 9:02that de Jene was out there in their base defense,
- 9:05but against some Nickel looks offensively, So I thought that
- 9:09was kind of interesting.
- 9:10Speaker 1: All right, let's go through some of you guys talked
- 9:12about it on the Inside of the Birds podcast, which
- 9:14you can get on all podcasting platforms just search Inside
- 9:17the Birds, Jeff. Let's go through some of the battles
- 9:19getting ready for Thursday night. It sounded today from Nick Sirianni.
- 9:23He didn't say Tyler Steen, but it sounded like he
- 9:25got a pretty good vote of confidence there.
- 9:28Speaker 2: I mean, the vote of confidence is that Tyler Steen
- 9:31has taken all the right card t reps since OTA's began,
- 9:35and even here in training camp, he's really not being
- 9:38pushed for the job. And if you were, I mean,
- 9:42if you want to take it a step further, I
- 9:44don't think Kenyan Green is really, you know, quitting himself
- 9:48really well here training camp. So Matt, prior to me,
- 9:52would be.
- 9:52Speaker 1: The Kenny on Green's over Kenyon Green seemingly is over
- 9:55to left guard at this point.
- 9:56Speaker 2: It seems like, right, yeah, yeah, he's practicing the left
- 9:59guard buddy struggle a little bit. In the one on
- 10:01one yesterday he had got sick on the field. Though
- 10:04it just hasn't been I think some people expected it
- 10:07would be just another reclamation projects that one miracle which
- 10:12you know I pointed out to other guys in the past,
- 10:14like a Chance Warmack. It's not like an automatic that
- 10:17somebody's someone's gonna come here and just be an all
- 10:20pro or provo caliber lineman because they're coached by Jeff Stellin,
- 10:24and this seems to be the case.
- 10:25Speaker 1: All right, let's look at Ojomo. Looks like he's the
- 10:28definite guy who's going to get the Milton Williams snaps.
- 10:31Who gets the Ojomo snaps from last year?
- 10:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think that that'll be determined. I think,
- 10:37you know, once Ty Robinson gets his feet under him
- 10:39as a rookie, he's going to get in there and
- 10:41get some time. And of course I mentioned Gabe Hall.
- 10:43I think Gave Hall's had a really nice camp. Really
- 10:46interested to see how he does in the preseason because
- 10:49I think he's a guy who the athleticism is not
- 10:53the question that really translates. Well, he was a tree,
- 10:56he should have been drafted. There obviously were some knocks
- 10:58on him coming outaler people told me they felt he
- 11:02just needed some good coaching and you know, maybe there's
- 11:04somebody that I kind of get into him and wake
- 11:07them up a little bit and then maybe that's happened here.
- 11:09So if and if that does, you got a pretty
- 11:11disruptive three technique type tackle who can probably play multiple
- 11:15spots on the line. So if you're an Eagles fan,
- 11:18you're watching these games the next three weeks looking for
- 11:20something to keep your eye on. That's one of the
- 11:23guys you have to have.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Circle uh the others even to keep an eye on
- 11:26Josh use Oz's Ozlari. Will they play in these games?
- 11:30And can they factor in?
- 11:32Speaker 2: And I think they should and back her into what
- 11:35the equations for the season.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Well, yeah, they have some sort of rotation or role
- 11:40or is this just basically Jaylen Spunt's going to get
- 11:42the Josh sweat amount of snaps.
- 11:45Speaker 2: No, I don't. I don't think that that's something they
- 11:46can rely on. I mean, I I'm not pushing any
- 11:49paddic buttons Mike, it's a little early, but in fairness,
- 11:52this is the time last year where we're like, hey,
- 11:55you know, Bryce Souff's kind of invisible, and I would
- 11:58say a worry to me has been one of him employees.
- 12:03You just haven't seen that really good edge rush from
- 12:07this team outside of some flashes from Uch. So it's
- 12:10good for ut that he's sort of resurrecting his career
- 12:14or on the way to doing that. But overall, the
- 12:15pass rush to me right now is a little bit
- 12:18behind where we've seen it in the past, and that
- 12:20makes a lot of sense given the youth, the inexperience
- 12:22that we've talked about all off season.
- 12:25Speaker 1: A couple others real quick with Jeff Boscher for Football
- 12:27at four here getting ready for the first preseason game,
- 12:30and obviously linebacker. Yesterday Jeremiah Trotter Junior was listed there
- 12:35as the starter Jahad Campbell. Do you anticipate he plays
- 12:38Thursday night? Probably not right.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not sure about that, only because although he's
- 12:44not been limited at all, that's a tough one. Sometimes
- 12:49I have a good feel for whether a guy is
- 12:51gonna play or not play. He's certainly someone that needs
- 12:54a reps, but obviously they don't want to get him hurt.
- 12:57I you know what, I think he's gonna wind up playing.
- 13:00It may not be a lot, but I think he's
- 13:01gonna wind up getting some reps.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Do you look at him as more linebacker edge rusher?
- 13:07They're gonna get both out of it. How's that gonna work?
- 13:10Speaker 2: I mean, right now, it's linebacker. And you know, that's
- 13:13something that I sort of got puzzled around the draft
- 13:16time when they drafted him, and it seemed like certain
- 13:20reporters or something in the feel the vibe out of
- 13:22the media was like, forget the fact that this guy
- 13:24played inside linebacker. He can rushed the edge and they
- 13:26can rush the edge, and that's all you need to know.
- 13:28And I couldn't figure out why someone would have that
- 13:31sentiment because I knew he was gonna start off at
- 13:34inside linebacker and that's the position he was playing last
- 13:38at Alabama. It is definitely a perk and a benefit
- 13:41and a bonus that he can move to the edge
- 13:43and rush from the edge, but Dick can't. Just so
- 13:46the other day, you know, it's not like you know,
- 13:48he's got a system, he's you don't just get to
- 13:51rush the passer. You play a lot of line games
- 13:53in his defense. If you lot of dropping, you have
- 13:55to have discipline when you're facing quarterbacks and get out
- 13:58of the pocket. It's not just get to the edges
- 14:00and rush the passer in his system. And right now
- 14:02he's just not getting a ton of reps at that
- 14:05and learning that part of the defense because he's playing
- 14:08so much inside linebacker so well, the idea of him
- 14:11is that edge rusher is it's there. I'm not saying
- 14:14it's not a thing. It certainly is. And that's a
- 14:16big part of why the Eagles drafted him in the
- 14:19first round to eventually be but with the Kobe Dan out,
- 14:23they need him an inside linebacker. That's his more natural position,
- 14:26and that's what he's playing mostly right now.
- 14:28Speaker 1: All right, mos Aj Dillon, will Shipley, No Shipley caught
- 14:32you know, wow, a running back caught a touchdown of
- 14:34the backfield on Sunday. So Dylan and Shipley, yes, do
- 14:39they have bigger roles than the backup running back had
- 14:42last year?
- 14:44Speaker 2: Was it with you that I said last Like, sometimes
- 14:47I forget who I say these things with. But you know,
- 14:49Mike Tyson's famous for saying everybody's got a plan until
- 14:52they get punched in the mouth. Right, So I'm sure
- 14:55the Eagles have a grand plan to try to get
- 14:57the ball more to Will Shipley and a Dylan. But
- 15:00what happens when like they started off last year, when
- 15:03you need to give the ball to sake one barking,
- 15:05guess what you're giving the ball to Saquon Barkley, And
- 15:08two you're in sa kind of position to be able
- 15:11to spread out the carries and the workload more. Right,
- 15:14we've seen that if the offense is going to struggle,
- 15:17gets who the ball is going to go to.
- 15:19Speaker 1: And Saikwad looks pretty good too, right, I mean it's
- 15:21not like other Yeah, yeah, all.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, he's cut a nice little wheel today for
- 15:26I think for a touchdown too. So ah, he's always
- 15:29looked goodell.
- 15:30Speaker 1: New layer to the offense.
- 15:32Speaker 2: The wheel it might have been, it might have been
- 15:33more like a slant or a Texas rout. I just
- 15:35know that he got matched up, got a got behind
- 15:38Shodder Junior, who's had a really nice campus is just
- 15:41one play in the red zone, caught a touchdown and
- 15:44you know that was good to say.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Jeff Boscher from the Inside of the Birds podcast, Football
- 15:48four pitch hitting for Adam Kaplan today and of course
- 15:51the Eagles are back on the field Thursday night and
- 15:53you can listen to all the action right here on
- 15:55ninety seven to three ESPN. All right, most great job
- 15:58in the pitch hitting role there. You're a real uh well,
- 16:00not Max nefflicker, not Max how a master. You would
- 16:05be into the night, into the night. Alright, man, see you,
- 16:11all right, Jeff Boscher, Everybody, Sports Past Live, ninety seven
- 16:14three ESPN,
