- 1:49bit later on in the show, Republican strategist Greg Thomas will be stopping bim
- 1:52interested to get his take on several things, including the fact that Senator Joe
- 1:57Manchin made the announcement last week that he will not be making to run at
- 2:00the White House We'll talk to Greg about that coming up a little bit later
- 2:04on. Plus, there's a been a lot of folks, Republican and Democrat,
- 2:07that have called this session of a legislature lackluster. That's the word that
- 2:10they use, lackluster. What does Greg Thomas think about that? We'll talk
- 2:15to him about that a little bit later on. Billie Snyder from the Shape
- 2:16Shop is here for her monthly visit. Hey, how are you, my
- 2:21dear rider? Well, how are you? Thank you? I'm doing great
- 2:23And before I do anything else, I need your help with something. This
- 2:27morning, I got to take time to wish my wife, ruth Ann a
- 2:31very happy birthday, and I second that. Now I'm not at liberty to
- 2:36say how old she is. Oh my god, you'll be killed, but
- 2:38I've had way too much fun with this. In advertising terms, she has
- 2:44entered what is known as the final demo. Now what I mean by that
- 2:47In the world of advertising and ratings and both television and radio, we have
- 2:51age demos, age groups. You know you have twelve plus is where it
- 2:53starts for ratings for your twelve plus and then it kind of varies. They'll
- 2:58break it down into eighteen to thirty five or twenty one to thirty or thirty
- 3:02to fifty four, again not giving her age. But the final demo is
- 3:07fifty five plus. And that's all I'm gonna say. Well, she's entered
- 3:13the final demo. I concur and I'm not saying any more than that.
- 3:17You've you met my wife. She's a lovely lady. She is, Yes,
- 3:21she is, I mean, way too lovely to be with me.
- 3:23I can tell you that I wasn't gonna go there. I'll go there.
- 3:27I don't care. It's a it's a. It's what it is. It
- 3:31is what it is. There are certain times you have to keep your mouth
- 3:34shuting. Yes, indeed, it's a lot of them. So there are
- 3:38things with you. Everything good, things are good. I developed something called
- 3:42vertigo. So I want you to know there's three of you this morning.
- 3:45Well, I mean, I mean, we can barely handle one of me.
- 3:47Now you've got three of me. Yeah, but it's it's getting better.
- 3:51I don't even know what brought it up. How do they treat vertigo?
- 3:53I mean, I've heard about it, but I don't know what.
- 3:55A lovely doctor and she gave me a drug just to help with the dizziness
- 4:01and it is helping, but I feel like I've just had a bottle of
- 4:05cheap wine. Not that I know how you fall out. I'm just speaking
- 4:13from experience. Somebody told me that. But anyway, and it's going to
- 4:16pass, I know. And there's a certain exercise that my daughter has helped
- 4:21me do because she also has suffered with it. And it's a weird feeling.
- 4:27Yeah, So what are the symptoms? I mean, I know it
- 4:30came from nowhere. Like I got out of bed, my bathroom was spinning,
- 4:33and then when I lie down, my bedroom was spinning. So then
- 4:38I realized, you know, I have an issue here. So I saw
- 4:43some help on Monday. I got some help, and I mean, I
- 4:46can drive, I can do all the things I do, but it's it's
- 4:50a weird feeling. I mean, is it something because I know, I
- 4:53know you're not a big proponent of medication, but this is one of those
- 4:57things that I mean, diet is not gonna go going to help in any
- 5:00way, nothing at all to do with it. And I'm happy to tell
- 5:02you I haven't missed a meal, of course, not, of course not.
- 5:06I mean, there's some things that are more important than some other things,
- 5:10right, yeah, I mean I'm eating and but definitely there's some dizzyness
- 5:15here. Okay, Well, we hope that you get better, hope you
- 5:15get over there, because I've known people that have that have suffered from vertigo
- 5:19and they say it's it's a very rough thing because it's one of those things,
- 5:23as you said, there's really there's very little treatment for it. I'll
- 5:27put it that way. I mean, it's not somebody you could take a
- 5:28pill for, not something you can you know, change your lifestyle. It
- 5:30just kind of happens sometimes, I guess. So it has happened to me,
- 5:34and I'm just gonna deal with it. But I'm not going to stop
- 5:39doing anything. And that's just speaks of you know, my whole attitude about
- 5:44life, right, keep going, keep doing, and that's what I'm That's
- 5:46what I am doing. Okay, there are three of you. Well,
- 5:51like I said, there's people trying to get rid of you know, at
- 5:53least a couple of them. So, uh so what's what's what's new?
- 5:57Had a very interesting conversation with a person I called to make an inquiry about
- 6:01something and she asked me if I could meet her on a certain day,
- 6:05and I said, well, I work. She said, what do you
- 6:08do. I said, well, I own the Shape Shop. She said
- 6:11what I said, I owned the Shape Shop. She said, where is
- 6:14it? I said, we moved to seven zero six Central Avenue back in
- 6:20twenty twenty. We closed Patrick Street twenty nineteen. She said, I love
- 6:26Patrick Street. She said, I would go to weight Watchers, but before
- 6:30I would do anything, I'd go in and give my order at Shape Shop.
- 6:35And she was so unbelievably astonished that we still exist and we are available.
- 6:43She said, I used to have the Crunchy Sunday. I said,
- 6:46well, what about the brownie Sunday and the tin roof Sunday. She said,
- 6:48just give me your address. So again, seven zero six Central Avenue,
- 6:55and it's just a block and a half west of five Corners. You
- 6:59know, when you're at five Corners you have to make a little bit of
- 7:00a maneuver to get on Central Avenue. That's why they call it five Corners.
- 7:06And we have a beautiful shop, you do, And we just want
- 7:11people to know we didn't close up. We didn't get swallowed up from the
- 7:15pandemic. Although when we opened officially February twenty four, in twenty we were
- 7:23only opened for a week and a half because gree timing. Yes, oh
- 7:27I must say yes, and we not listen to Shape Shop wasn't the only
- 7:30business that's all sure, everybody well, and you're one of the ones that
- 7:34were able to survive it because across America, a lot of people, a
- 7:40lot of businesses I'm talking about have to throw up, did not, especially
- 7:43in the restaurant in the service industry like that, because they they just couldn't
- 7:46make it. But you were able to make it. What has led to
- 7:50the success of the Shape Shop in your opinion? I think what we do,
- 7:54and that is we make things that are fresh, clean, delicious.
- 7:59Our muffins, our Dippy doos, our ice cream, the ice the ice
- 8:03cream for Dippy Doo's is low sugar. We also have an ice cream machine
- 8:07that puts out sugar free ice cream, which is just delicious. Right now,
- 8:15I think we're doing a strawberry and vanilla. You can have vanilla,
- 8:18you can have strawberry, where you can have the twist. I believe it's
- 8:22the successes because we are wanting to make things available that people love and want
- 8:28plus need, but they don't know they need it until they really alter their
- 8:33lifestyle. Eating clean, healthy food is very very important. The more we
- 8:39put preservatives in our body, the more we are asking for pain and discomfort
- 8:46because there's no provision within our chemical makeup to deal with some of these additives.
- 8:54And our wraps, our salads. If you want salmon, our staff
- 9:00makes a fresh salmon salad and you've had it a couple yod, it's excellent.
- 9:05Our soups, everything Dave is made from scratch, so we don't,
- 9:11you know, get the meat from someplace else. And you know, we
- 9:13do pizzas. We started a different kind of pizza when we opened on Central
- 9:20Avenue, so we do it on a flat bread, on a piea bread,
- 9:22but we also do it on non bread. So a serving if you
- 9:26get the non bread, is two pieces. So a lady called up one
- 9:31day and she said, in a very kind of scary voice, she said,
- 9:35I opened up my pizza box and there were two of them in there.
- 9:39He said, okay for me to eat both, because you know,
- 9:43talking from a diet standpoint, she was a weight watcher at the time,
- 9:48and so I said, I gave a permission, Yes, you can have
- 9:52both of them. And of course, you know the business that brought me
- 9:56to West Virginia weight Watchers. It's gone, but we need to stay focused.
- 10:03We need to remember that eating healthy surpasses nothing else. It's where our
- 10:09health lies. And if you happen to know where the health store is that
- 10:15I can go and buy some health directly. It's really the only thing you
- 10:18can do, though, is to watch what goes in. I mean,
- 10:22that's and you and I've talked about this in the past, and we're talking
- 10:24Millie Snyder from the Shape Shop. We've talked about this in the past.
- 10:28Over the years forty fifty years, all these diets have come and gone.
- 10:33I mean, you know you you name them. There was the Adkins,
- 10:35and there was this, and there was that, and there was no no.
- 10:39We're gonna do the Long Island Diet, and we're going to do the
- 10:41Kansas Diet, and forget about South Beach Florest, South Beach diets, Scarsdale.
- 10:46You know, we're going to do all soup. You're gonna eat nothing
- 10:48but soup, eight meals a day. Well, let me know how that
- 10:50works out for you. But at the end you'll be you'll be in a
- 10:54room. Why you'll be We won't discuss you publicly. You will be in
- 10:58the porcelain chamber for quite some time. But the thing about it is is
- 11:01all these things have come and gone, and what at the end of the
- 11:05day, what has stood the test of time has been along with exercise,
- 11:09absolutely has been healthy eating and just and you know, low, lower calorie
- 11:16fresh without all of the preservatives. It's a huge and I'm as guilty as
- 11:22anybody, but it's a proven fact from a medical standpoint that the human body
- 11:28is not designed and does not easily, if at all, digest some of
- 11:33these things that are in fast foods, and your body stores it up and
- 11:35causes many, many problems. And of course I continue to teach the Mediterranean
- 11:41lifestyle and we do it Thursday morning Thursday night. But I have good news
- 11:46and that is not this coming Saturday, but the following I'm opening up a
- 11:52group on Saturday morning at the Shapeshop location. Saturday is a time when a
- 11:56lot of people who can't get in through the week due to family, work,
- 12:01whatever. So we're going to have a fix it with foods. That's
- 12:05the name of the group on Saturday morning, not this Saturday, but follow
- 12:09the following Saturday. And what time will it mean, we're going to start
- 12:13it. We're going to begin it at nine o'clock, at nine o'clock in
- 12:16the morning. And what if you go to one of these the sessions that
- 12:20you have, what exactly happens in those Well, first of all, you'll
- 12:24sign up, and then you'll get weighed, and then we'll have wonderful group
- 12:28discussion. We will learn something every week that is powerful and empowering and instructive
- 12:37so that you can think about it and make necessary changes. And then we
- 12:45will eat three meals a day plus snacks and eat better than you've ever eaten
- 12:50because Mediterranean talks about fresh, clean food, and it's all over the internet.
- 12:56There's so much about Mediterranean. It's number six. Pardon me, it's
- 13:03the sixth year of being number one voted by US News and World Report,
- 13:09which is a pretty prestigious Yes, it is. Before we ecrite it about
- 13:15that, before we let you go, I'll do want to mention this now
- 13:16that warmer weather is on the way, they tell us, and we're not
- 13:20done with winter yet. We've had some pretty big snows in March and April,
- 13:22you know, in this part of the world. But I was looking
- 13:24at had the in the forecast temperature going to be in the seventies, possibly
- 13:28a couple days next week before it probably will fall back down again. But
- 13:31nonetheless you're going to be out and about a little bit more. We're all
- 13:35going to be out in about a little bit more so on these days when
- 13:37if you're in an office building somewhere in downtown Charleston, knau City or whatever,
- 13:41and you're thinking, what am I going to have for lunch? Do
- 13:43I want to go through the drive through? I want to. It's a
- 13:46short drive over to Central Avenue and it's a great environment to go in and
- 13:52set down a need or do the grab and go thing, because you offer
- 13:54that as well. All those grab and go meals are outstanding. And also
- 14:00know Millie that you are going to be out a about even more with your
- 14:03shape shop, with your trailer at different Lives on the Lives, Live on
- 14:09the Levee, events and different festivals as we get into the spring of summer
- 14:13months as well. And I have to say that people are booking our truck
- 14:16now all the way through September of this year, and I think that's because
- 14:22our reputation precedes us. People want to eat fresh, clean food and I
- 14:26mentioned the last time that I was with you, Tiffany. I asked her
- 14:31what the menu was on the truck. She says, we're doing salmon bites
- 14:35on a bed of quenewa. I said, what I mean, who does
- 14:39that on a food truck? Anyway, long story short, she sold out
- 14:43because people were just enamored with being able to eat real, fresh, delicious
- 14:48food. And that's what you get when you come to Shape Shop. Our
- 14:54stuff is that good? Give us the address phone number. I know you're
- 14:56on social media if you have a We're on Facebook, Base, We're on
- 15:01Instagram, all the all the things. And we're at seven six Central Avenue.
- 15:05We're a block and a half west of five Corners. We are open
- 15:11six days a week. Only one night a week we're open till six and
- 15:15that's Thursday. Every other day in the in the week, we're open till
- 15:18five. Saturday we open from ten to three, and then not this Saturday,
- 15:24but a week from Saturday, we're going to add a group for fix
- 15:28It with Foods and it'll be nine am on Saturday morning and Saturday morning,
- 15:33and yours truly is going to be the leader. Ah, the boss,
- 15:37the boss, the boss, the one that invented is now you're really invented,

- 19:29Saturday afternoon starting at three o'clock. Hooters in Kanasa City. It's been closed
- 19:33for a couple of years. It never really survived COVID to be honest with
- 19:37you, so Hooters, the building itself is going to be torn down,
- 19:41and a couple of guys that I presume were just Hooters fans the restaurant don't
- 19:45go there Dave have taken it up on themselves to plan a candlelight vigil at
- 19:52the former Hooters location in kanas City. Their names are Leonard Browning and Drew
- 19:56Cook, and I've been speaking with them Leonard. Matter of fact, I
- 20:00talked to Leonard. I have a call with him a little bit later on.
- 20:03I am planning on talking to Leonard a little bit later on in the
- 20:07coming days, maybe other show, maybe on Friday. He's also going to
- 20:10be on the Steve Animals Show. This is a big deal. It's trending
- 20:14nationwide that there's going to be a candlelight vigil at Hooters Friday night at six
- 20:18six thirty or so. We plan to be there, meaning myself, Steve
- 20:22Animal Shockley from ninetege seven to Mountain, and apparently according to the organizer's a
- 20:26lot of other people are going to be there too. Here's a fun fact
- 20:30in that laughing Here is my buddy Greg Thomas, Steve Animal Greg of the
- 20:33Mountain ninety eight seven. Steve was there doing a live broadcast the day it
- 20:38opened, which we think was around nineteen ninety six. Steve didn't have a
- 20:42lot of brain cells laught, but we think it was about nineteen ninety six
- 20:45or so. So basically Steve's going to be bookending this thing. He'll be
- 20:48there Friday night, six thirty eight, the candlelight vigil for Hooters of Cadall
- 20:55City. That's some brand loyalty. There's a lot of I don't I don't
- 21:00know. I know I know that there is one outside Beckley near Tamarack,
- 21:03but it's not there either. It's not there either, not there anymore?
- 21:07Thought it was no, No, that's a that's a Mexican restaurant. Now
- 21:11are you sure about that? But I swear it's been been a couple of
- 21:14months since I've been down that way. But okay, well, you may
- 21:15be right about that. But Greg Thomas is here. How are you man?
- 21:18Doing very well? How are you? I am doing well? Uh?
- 21:22Tex says a cadillate vigil for Hooters. Even I think that's funny text.
- 21:30Okay, another another one about keeping us abreast of situations. That's a
- 21:33text. I don't know. I'm going to leave that out. You have
- 21:36puns again, jokes man. Well, a lively group listeners here. I
- 21:42want to ask you this question. We got several things. We'll talk to
- 21:45Greg. By the way, Greg's gonna be here for the rest of the
- 21:47show. I want to start there with Senator Mansion. Senator Mansion. On
- 21:51Friday, during his speech in Morgantown, Greg announced that he would not be
- 21:56running for the White House. Uh. I'm not going to say it.
- 21:59The announcement self took a lot of people by surprise. But I will say
- 22:03that the timing of it, because, as I mean, as early as
- 22:06Thursday, he was at an event in Cleveland and he was already throwing out
- 22:08people or somebody had brought up possible vice presidents or maybe he would be a
- 22:12vice president, and it was Mitt Romney, and I think Rob Portman's name
- 22:15was mentioned up there. Your take on Senator Mansion opting not to go third
- 22:19party, Well, look, he he was really angling to get you know,
- 22:25he was never just going to go straight up independent. He was really
- 22:30angling to get that no labels sort of endorsement, right, no labels?
- 22:33Is this you know, sort of bipartisan you know, group that tries to
- 22:40find some middle ground or whatever, and they find some moderate Republicans and moderate
- 22:44Democrats to sort of be part of this coalition. To me, and I
- 22:48read a couple of different articles about his comments, and he sounded like he
- 22:53was really let down by that group had not done as much as what he'd
- 22:59hoped they would do. Now was this a group? I think Larry Hogan,
- 23:03the governor of Palin, Yeah, resigned from the group. Put correct,
- 23:06Yeah, well he did well. He resigned because then he was doing,
- 23:08uh, he's actually running for US Senate in Maryland as a Republican.
- 23:11So I think I think it was just, you know, this group had
- 23:15raised a bunch of money and was trying to get on the ballot across the
- 23:18country, you know, because the way that works, right, like the
- 23:22Democrats and Republicans always have positions on the ballot, but all those third parties
- 23:26have to either you know, have previously performed so well in an election.
- 23:32And like in West Virginia, if you're a political party here, a non
- 23:36you know, one of the minor minor minor parties, and you get one
- 23:38percent in a governor's race, you get to be like on the ballot for
- 23:42like the next four years or Yeah. It's weird. And that's why the
- 23:45Mountain Party is always on the air, you know. I know the Constitution
- 23:48Party has been trying to do that and so but if you don't do that,
- 23:52there's like other things you have to do a lot of times it's a
- 23:55petition drive or you got to do all these different things. So this no
- 23:59Labels organization had been doing that all over the country. I don't follow him,
- 24:03so I don't really know what kind of progress they made, but I
- 24:06could tell by some of senator mentions comments that he was not encouraged by the
- 24:11press. That was kind of my takeaway too. Yeah yeah, so so
- 24:17so so what do you think he does? Hopey did a commentary, you
- 24:18know, Joe Manchin and and I mean Huppy. Huppy has been his you
- 24:23know, de facto you know, media consultant for years, so he'd know
- 24:26better than me. But uh, well, here's the thing. I think
- 24:29that people kind of forget that Joe is because you know, Joe is and
- 24:36I'm assuming very good health. He's good looking guystill, but people forget Joe's
- 24:40up there in age seven. Yeah. I mean, we talked about the
- 24:42age of Biden and Trump. Uh but a lot of that has to do
- 24:47with the way you carry yourself too. And Mansion still looks like pretty much
- 24:49like he did when he was thirty five or forty, and he still got
- 24:52the energy and so on and so forth. What do you think Manchon does
- 24:55from this point on? I just don't know. You know, I'm not
- 24:56a I'm not a friend of his. You know, I don't know what
- 25:02he does. I mean I assume you know, they put in you know,
- 25:04hop he had written about it and said that, you know the uh
- 25:07you know, his wife was in that car wreck down in Alabama, and
- 25:10you know, I don't know. I mean, I look at all these
- 25:14guys, right, I look at you know, Mansion, you look at
- 25:15McConnell, Biden, and you just think, isn't there somewhere, isn't there
- 25:21like some buddy along in the family that's like calling and being like, hey,
- 25:25why don't you come home and be agree? You know what I mean,
- 25:26like like why are you still doing this right? And maybe that's you
- 25:30know, maybe that has happened. I just don't know, and maybe that's
- 25:36happened. I don't know. I mean, look, he didn't want he
- 25:37didn't run for reelection because he wasn't gonna win real now, and so that's
- 25:44that's sort of I think the main reason for that. And then he kind
- 25:47of looked at it. You know, he looked at the presidential thing.
- 25:49Uh so look, I look, I'm obviously elected. Office is not on
- 25:52the table. So I don't know. I mean, you know, look,
- 25:56if if the Democrats were to hold it, I mean maybe he could.
- 26:00I mean, he would obviously could get some kind of ambassadorship or something
- 26:03like that if he wanted it, or you know, I'm sure he could
- 26:04get a job. Well, there's been people that I can't imagine he's looking
- 26:07for a job. Well, there's been people that's flowed the idea because Gordon
- 26:10Gee is going to be resigning at WVU. And but here's the thing and
- 26:14hot and I agree with Hopey. He talked about this on the show.
- 26:17WVU fancies itself as an and it is. It's an academic institution. They're
- 26:22not going to put a non academic in that role as president. They did
- 26:26it one time and it didn't go so well. It didn't go sowhere now.
- 26:27And I'm not saying that as a slam against Joe Mansion by any strategy
- 26:32imagination, but they're like somebody from the world of academia that has spent their
- 26:36entire career in that realm, and that's he's not Joe may or at least
- 26:40had more of a focus on it than right. I mean, I think
- 26:42I could see that. I mean, do you do you foresee a time
- 26:45that Joe Mansion could because I've heard all these conspiracy theories. People have said,
- 26:51well, he cut a deal with this this party of that party that
- 26:56he's not going to run. He's going to be a cabinet level so an
- 26:59energy secretary. Do you see that happen? I don't know. I mean,
- 27:02he could certainly get it if he wanted one. I mean, it's
- 27:06not like they have a you know, It's not like they have an over
- 27:08abundance of talent on the Democratic Party nationally, you know what I mean.
- 27:12You know, it's not like there's and let's face it, I know Joe
- 27:15Manchin has its detractors, Greg, but I will say, if we're going
- 27:19to have somebody in a cabinet level position as an energy secretary for West Virginia
- 27:25and cold producing states, we could do a lot worse than Joe Manchaw.
- 27:29He's not it totally insane like most of the national Democrats. Not totally insane,
- 27:34not totally insane. I don't think he's insane at all. I'll be
- 27:37honest with you, I mean in juxtaposition with them, No, yeah,
- 27:42comparison. But Dave Allen showing five any lives brought to part by Bridge Valley.

- 27:56to fifty salary match. Bridge Valley can also supplies to gold graduates and apprenticeships
- 28:00or your company. There's a Bridge Valley dot edu slash apprenticeships. Today,
- 28:03Tex says, is it too late for Joe to run for governor? Yeah?
- 28:07Oh yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, it's not that's not going to
- 28:08happen. I don't know. I mean, with all due respect to Senator
- 28:12Mansion, I had him on the show last week. I don't know that
- 28:17Senator Mansion could win at this point any office in West Virginia, not a
- 28:25state wide one, don't not a state wide one. I don't think so.
- 28:26I think any of the Republicans that are running now, if if in
- 28:30a a in a dream scenario, if Senator Mansion is running against Mac Corner,
- 28:37Pat Morrissey Miller Capitol, I think he loses. I think he all
- 28:42right, I want to get into this with you, Greg. I've heard
- 28:47some say, including a friend of mine in the media that I was talking
- 28:49to earlier this morning, that this session has been forgive me for saying this
- 28:53term lackluster at best. You wanted to speak to that, and you even
- 29:00went as far, sir as to go all David Letterman and send me a
- 29:03top ten list, top ten reasons this was a lackluster session. We can
- 29:08get into that, but overall, and we'll get into specifics and we'll go
- 29:11to break. I mean, why is your opinion, what is your opinion
- 29:15of this has been a lacklusterre session. Look, there's just there's It's not
- 29:19that they're not doing anything right. I hear all these people are like,
- 29:22oh, it's an election year. I don't I don't think this is Some
- 29:25of this is because it it's an election year. But I don't think the
- 29:27election year thing is why they're not doing it. I think these guys had
- 29:32a huge to do list. Right, anytime a state turns Republican, you
- 29:37have this to do list of conservative principles, right, school choice, tax
- 29:41cuts, to reform, legal reform, cut some you know, bureaucratic stuff,
- 29:48rights of work, prevailing wage. There's just sort of this list of
- 29:52things you're supposed to do. And after we did the largest tax cut in
- 29:57history state history last year, that was the last on like that sort of
- 30:02big agenda. Right, So you kind of have this to do list and
- 30:06all of your major items were done, but your whole list isn't done.
- 30:10Right. You still have a whole bunch of like smaller items. You know,
- 30:12it's you know, you go to the grocery store. You know you
- 30:15got to go get ten things, and then there's two or three like little
- 30:18things that you are still on the list, but then you forgot it and
- 30:21you're just like should I go back and get them or do I just leave?
- 30:23That's what this session is. This was like the two or three things
- 30:26left on the thing, and you're like, we do we start a new
- 30:30list and go or do we go back and get these things? These guys
- 30:33decided to go back and get the things right, so they're you know,
- 30:36you've got you know, you had this huge of this big, big agenda.
- 30:40And I'm not trying to be critical of them overall. I'm being critical
- 30:45of the session. I think they've done a great job in passing the most
- 30:48conservative legislative agenda in the country over the last five to seven years. I
- 30:53think this session, though a little bit of complacency, a little bit of
- 30:59it is just sort of they got this other to do list that I was
- 31:02talking about, of all these little things, and then you have, you
- 31:07know, probably one of the biggest reasons too, Right, you got a
- 31:08lame duck governor. You know, not that that's his fault, right,
- 31:11it's the last year of his term limited out, and he's running for Senate.
- 31:17So you've got people within the party that don't you know, they they're
- 31:19like, because of politics, aren't going along with the agenda and whatever.
- 31:23So he was just in a position where he couldn't really have a huge agenda.
- 31:29And then you also have, right, you got the I mean,
- 31:33look at how many of the other state wides are running for something else.
- 31:34Right, you got auditor, attorney, general, treasure or Secretary of State,
- 31:38both your judiciary chairman in the Senate and the House. Because you know
- 31:41more Capitol was House Judiciary chair, he's running for governor. Charlie Trump was
- 31:47Senate Judiciary chair, he's running for State Supreme Court, you know, and
- 31:49those are really really key positions in the legislature, you know. So you
- 31:55have those people sort of running for other stuff too, and so I think
- 32:00those are some of the just logistical things that have kind of held up.
- 32:05Uh, you've got a very very high turnover in the House of Elegance.
- 32:09I mean, I think you're talking about anymore. I mean you're talking about
- 32:14but every not every cycle, but it will be on this one. You're
- 32:17probably talking about a third of the legislators in the House of Delegates being brand
- 32:22new right, So you've got this huge turnover of a lot of new people,
- 32:27and the new people a brand new person isn't isn't exactly the most effective
- 32:31legislator told me the first first year, you're setting back trying to learn where
- 32:37the restrooms are. And that's and I think a little bit of that is
- 32:39what's going on here. I think, you know, you've had a ton
- 32:45of party switchers, right, You've had a bunch of Democrats that have kind
- 32:47of come republican, and I think that you know, they sort of they're
- 32:52they're republican and and some of these people, like I like them personally,
- 32:57but I think some of these people they they still have even if they're like
- 33:00voting with us most of the time, sort of their core a lot of
- 33:04their core beliefs are still not exactly long held conservative beliefs, right. So
- 33:07I think I think that that's kind of a part of the problem too,
- 33:13as we just have so many of them and we're trying to figure it out.
- 33:16And also hold that thought because I want to continue this, because there's
- 33:20a couple of other things on the top ten list that you send me that
- 33:22I want to go over and we'll get to that in just a moment.

- 36:17Thomas is here, Tex says. Greg says say the Dems don't have much
- 36:22talent on the national level. I've never heard heard more of an instance of
- 36:25a pot calling the kettle black. He's not wrong. I mean I think
- 36:32that. I mean, really, look, I mean, if you look
- 36:36at the Republicans on the national level right now, I mean I think there's
- 36:38I think there's more on the Republican side than the Democrats side, but I
- 36:43certainly think there's I mean, I mean, look at the struggle there was
- 36:46to get a Speaker of the House that was like, yeah, you know,
- 36:50so, I don't I think the Republicans are in a better position than
- 36:52the Democrats there, but I don't. That guy's not totally wrong. Tex
- 36:55says the Conservative agenda of removing child work permits their employer buddies have access to
- 37:00cheap labor. This goes back to yesterday. There's discussion in the House that
- 37:05fourteen year olds would be allowed to work. But that's with parental consent.
- 37:09Uh, it's not they're going to put fourteen year olds in sweatshomps. That's
- 37:13if there's a there's a whole lot the go along with them. Some people
- 37:15are just against employment, you know, Tex says, w I just caught
- 37:21what you said there. So people were just against employment. Okay, Tex
- 37:23says, w VU fancies itself as an academic institution. Dave, did you
- 37:29mean to say it this way? It didn't come out right. It's a
- 37:31it's a university. Yes, it's a university. Of course, that's what
- 37:34they're going to fancy themself. What I said was they tend to be people
- 37:37that, like, you know, the larger universities. You know, you're
- 37:40not going to see a guy that maybe was ahead of a fortune five hundred
- 37:44company suddenly be named president of you know, Kansas University, Kansas or whatever.
- 37:51I manators do it though, And you know that Governor Mitch Daniels from
- 37:54Indiana went on to lead Purdue. But Ben what was that guy's Ben sass
- 38:00or whatever, and and and I'll say that at my alma mater, Brad
- 38:04Smith's killing it at Marshall right now. But yeah, what a what an
- 38:07absolute I mean, we're sitting here talking about not having talents in the parties.
- 38:13What an absolute superstar? That guy? Yes, amazing, he's the
- 38:16amazing. He's the probably the most impressive guy in West Virginia right now.
- 38:22Next time, Well, what that goes without saying? Tex says lackluster session,
- 38:28lackluster legislature to say the least, as the state suffers under the super
- 38:31duper go op majority. Let them drink raw milk. So we'll use that
- 38:37as a segue to get into what you were talking about, what we were
- 38:40talking about at the break here. But uh, the reason that you see
- 38:45some of these uh unique bills crazy and insane I'll say some some could say
- 38:52crazy and insane bills. I'm gonna make a point that I'm gonna make like
- 38:58sort of a balancing point to it. But there's no leadership on the social
- 39:02conservative side, right there isn't There isn't like one group that's the clearing house
- 39:07for social conservative bills, right there isn't like somebody you got to go to
- 39:12and be like Okay, here's the five social conservative bills we have this year.
- 39:16We're gonna have one that addresses the you know, the trans issues.
- 39:21We're going to have one that addresses abortion. We're gonna have one that addresses
- 39:23whatever else. Right. What So, because you don't have any leadership there,
- 39:30because you don't have one organization with one sort of executive director that really
- 39:34runs it, that's doing a great job, you get all these legislators that
- 39:38have their own ideas, right, and so if you don't have like a
- 39:42clearinghouse and somebody you're supposed to call to be like, hey, you know,
- 39:45what's the agenda this year? Can I get my bill on there?
- 39:47What do I do? They just all do it, right, So they
- 39:51all do it and like and for some reason, they all think there's like
- 39:54value and like having like, well, my bill that I sponsored got passed
- 40:00the House Judiciary Committee. And so what happens is instead of having like five
- 40:06of those that are bills that have been professionally runt like written by a real
- 40:12you know lawyer that's a constitutional lawyer that understands these stuff, there's no there's
- 40:20no like, well, hey, here's how other states do it, you
- 40:22know, nobody's done any research on it, uh, and you end up
- 40:25with instead of having five of those bills, you end up with like five
- 40:30hundred of those bills, right. And that's the problem is if you have
- 40:34five hundred of them, twenty of them are going to get through. Right
- 40:37in this year, probably forty of them have gotten through. And so I
- 40:42that's I think that's a huge problem. I mean, when I go,
- 40:44you know, and I'm a lobbyist for a tort reform stuff, I'm,
- 40:46you know, a lobbyist for the American Tort Reform Association, and we pass
- 40:50TOWRT reform bills, legal reform stuff. But when I go to pass a
- 40:52bill, it's been written by a real lawyer who's like gone and done this,
- 40:57and you know. And then and then I do we what's called a
- 41:00fifty state survey. So I literally have a sheet of paper that has here's
- 41:04how all other fifty states handle this particular issue. And then we do like
- 41:07a you know, page page and a half white paper that's like here's the
- 41:12reason we're supposed to we need to do this here. Right, So you've
- 41:14got you know, I got a little folder and I go talk to a
- 41:16legislator, and it's like, hey, here's a professionally written bill. Here's
- 41:21this stuff. If you want to talk to somebody about it in more detail,
- 41:24I can get you on the phone with an expert. You know,
- 41:28we put a lot of time and energy into doing these big time things.
- 41:30That's what needs to be done on four or five bills, right, but
- 41:36we don't do it. They don't do it on any of those bills.
- 41:37They they're you know, they're writing some thoughts down on the back of an
- 41:40Applebee's cocktail napkin and taking it down to bill drafting and it's popping up and
- 41:45they're voting on it two days later. And honestly, it's unprofessional, it's
- 41:51disorganized. Uh, and it's it's a problem. It's a legitimate problem.
- 41:55And then what happens is rather than addressing the four or five things that really
- 42:00and look, and I'm a social conservative, man, I mean I'm you
- 42:02know, I I've most of these concepts I'm supportive of. But then you
- 42:08look at these bills. I don't know, I mean, I'm not there,
- 42:13so I don't know how i'd vote on them. But a lot of
- 42:15them, man, I'd have to say, you got to go back to
- 42:16the drawing You know, I'm for this, right, I'm for this stuff.
- 42:20You got to go back to the drawing board. I mean, this
- 42:22is just it's amateur hour and we need to do better. We need to
- 42:27do better. But Dave Allen, Schell and five any live bright to part

- 46:27Tex says, the way the session is going on social conservatism, the
- 46:30people of West Virginia better enjoy their cold beer while we can. Next year
- 46:34we may have to buy warm beer and get it cold ourselves. Tex says.
- 46:38Dave. Ask Greg who he supports for governor and other offices. I
- 46:44don't support I support anybody but Patrick Morrissey for governor. And I don't you
- 46:51know, man, That's the thing. I mean, I'm just I'm buddies
- 46:53with so many of these different folks that I like. I just don't.
- 46:57I just because I you know, I do this for a living, right,
- 47:00So I mean for the callers to say, hey, you know what,
- 47:01like, I literally do this for a living. So I run campaigns,
- 47:05you know, I run a bunch of state Senate races, you know,
- 47:07involved in circuit court races and stuff this year and some other stuff.
- 47:12So I just you know, typically I don't know a lot of times I
- 47:15get involved, but some of these primaries, I don't know. There's really
- 47:20no difference. I mean, there's differences, and I've got you know,
- 47:23there's people that I probably like a little bit better than others. But in
- 47:28most cases I just I like them both, or like all three of them
- 47:30or whatever. So but I don't like more c so that you know,
- 47:32kind of anybody think you stated that? But Dave Islands showing five any line
- 47:37bright to you parted by Meeks Realty Group or Trust and efficiency are the cornerstones
- 47:40of their service. Give them a call today three zero four four four zero
- 47:44one one zero wander Business Meeks Dot in US, Texas. Dave. Some
- 47:47may say the session is lackluster. In reality, that's a win for the
- 47:51people to West Virginia. Less legislative action means less opportunity for government to screw
- 47:55up people's lives. I've I've heard that more than one and I certainly appreciate
- 48:02that sentiment for certain Are you wanted to say something about the business Well,
- 48:07you know, look I went on sort of my comments about the disorganization of
- 48:10the social conservative kind of cause the other thing too. You know, another
- 48:15reason I think the session has been lackluster is, you know, the business
- 48:19community had so many wins, right, I mean, they had a lot
- 48:22of wins, a lot of stuff going the right way. I had a
- 48:27lot of significant policy changes. Those policy changes are why this economy is going
- 48:31so much better and why we have these budget surpluses. So it's like they,
- 48:35you know, look, the social conservatives and the business groups and the
- 48:38job kind of creators had a lot of success early on with this Republican majority,
- 48:45and I think they've got a little bit of complacent, and I think
- 48:46I think a couple of things on the on the business side, they sort
- 48:50of because they got so many big policy changes made. Now they're like,
- 48:54you know, you see the business communities agendas and it's like all these like
- 48:58favors right, it's you know what I mean, it's like they're just not
- 49:00big. It's not it's not like what they call that, like small ball
- 49:05and like but you know, it's all this like small ball type stuff.
- 49:07Right, It's just it's not that it doesn't matter, it's just not really
- 49:10significant. And so I think that's something that it's got to be done too.
- 49:15And I think the other side or the other aspect of this, the
- 49:19business groups used to go in and like want big changes made that would lower
- 49:22the cost of doing business in West Virginia. That would then turn around and
- 49:25help businesses, right the investors. The businesses could reinvest, they could hire
- 49:30new people, they could increase wages, you know, whatever it is that
- 49:31they needed to do. We've gotten away from that, and now because we
- 49:37have these like huge pots of economic development money, everybody just wants a handout.
- 49:40You know. The government's gotten involved in kind of picking winners and losers
- 49:44in business, and now everybody instead of being like, hey, we need
- 49:47to go past legal reform or we need to go tackle some more regulatory stuff,
- 49:52everybody's just trying to figure out how to angle for a hand out.
- 49:53And so I think that's something that we've got to get away from too,
- 49:58and something that we you know, you hear about all, you know,
- 50:00we're sitting here talking about these Republican primaries. To me, that's one of
- 50:05the biggest issues I think that the Republican Party in West Virginia is gonna do.
- 50:07I mean, you have to do some of that economic development. I
- 50:10mean, if you didn't do that, you wouldn't have a new core,
- 50:12a new course. Obviously, like the one of the biggest thing that's going
- 50:15to happen to the state, you know, from a job's perspective. So
- 50:20you have to do that sometimes. But how much of that do you do
- 50:22right? And so that to me, that's I hope that's a debate we
- 50:25have during this primary season, and I hope that's something that we see kind
- 50:30of moving forward with upcoming legislators. But Dave on the show and five VideA

- 51:24You know, I've rattled off a bunch of things of sort of on
- 51:28the Republicans of why I think the session is sort of bordering on lackluster and
- 51:32disappointing. But let's not overlook the fact that the Democrats are the reason that
- 51:38we were in this hole that we've are now having to work triple over time
