- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. What should I eat?
- 0:33When should I take my meds? Do I rest now?
- 0:36Do I rest later? With Parkinson's, even small
- 0:38choices can feel like an Olympic level decisions.
- 0:41Welcome back everyone. A big shout out to my inner
- 0:44circle, private community and channel members.
- 0:46Hey, you know what? Your support means the world to
- 0:48me. And if you're new here, my name
- 0:50is Bryce and this is living with Parkinson's.
- 0:53The good, the bad and the reality.
- 0:54And you know, it's all about Parkinson's really.
- 0:58And if you're living with it or someone you love is living with
- 1:00it, or you're just trying to understand it better, you're in
- 1:02the right place. Today's episode, Parkinson's and
- 1:04decision fatigue. While even small choices can
- 1:08make like climbing can feel like climbing Mount Everest.
- 1:12And it's going to be a power punched episode.
- 1:14So let's talk about it. Decision fatigue.
- 1:17It happens when your brain just gets tired of making choices.
- 1:20And with Parkinson's that turns the dial up to like 11.
- 1:25We're not just deciding what to do, we're calculating meds.
- 1:28We're calculating symptoms, timings, energy levels, side
- 1:31effects, and whether we can physically pull it all off.
- 1:35So simple stuff like what to wear, when to eat.
- 1:40It suddenly feels like you're solving a math equation in the
- 1:43middle of a tornado right at spoiler alert, I suck at math.
- 1:48So I'll be honest, you know? Some mornings the thought of
- 1:51making any decision makes me want to crawl back right into
- 1:53bed, you know? Do I go for a walk or do I wait
- 1:55until after my meds kick in? Do I feel now or wait till I can
- 1:58smile properly without looking like a wax figure at, you know,
- 2:02at the museum, right? Even replying to messages can
- 2:05feel overwhelming for me. Not because I don't care, but
- 2:08because my brain is in a slow motion and my motivation is
- 2:12somewhere under the couch with the TV, with the lost remote
- 2:15control. So let's talk about solutions.
- 2:19Like not magic ones, the behind that make you climb feel a
- 2:23little bit more manageable. So first of all, you need to
- 2:27reduce the number of choices. I mean, sounds pretty simple,
- 2:29right? Well, how do you do that?
- 2:31Well, for me, I set a routine so I don't think so I don't have to
- 2:35think. I just do, right?
- 2:37Same breakfast, same meds, same cup of coffee.
- 2:39Boring, maybe. Life saving, Absolutely right.
- 2:44You just have to set yourself up for success.
- 2:48Another really big thing that I do, and I've been doing this
- 2:50most of my life, but it's even, it's greater importance now with
- 2:54Parkinson's, is I make important decisions really early, right?
- 2:58I try to tackle anything major in the morning before my brain
- 3:01starts to buffer. Now, I don't mean first thing in
- 3:04the morning. I mean I need my meds to kick
- 3:06in, but I need to get to that really optimal place where my
- 3:08brain is working, what I feel is the absolute smoothest.
- 3:12And to be honest with you, if I don't do those big decisions in
- 3:15the morning, I'm going to get really overwhelmed because I'm
- 3:17going to be thinking about them all through the day.
- 3:19No matter what I'm doing. I'm doing small tasks.
- 3:20I'm trying to ignore it. I'm, you know, trying to
- 3:22procrastinate. I'm trying to put it on the back
- 3:24on the back shelf just for now, but it's it's there and it's
- 3:26just weighing on me, Weighing on me.
- 3:28And you know how many have been like me?
- 3:30Have you ever procrastinated right until the next day, right?
- 3:33I mean, that happens, it happens all the time.
- 3:34So I, I read a book years and years and years and years and
- 3:37years ago and I can't remember even who wrote it, but I think
- 3:41what they called it was eat the frog.
- 3:43Eat that frog, right? You know, this the big decision
- 3:46of the day. So the quicker you eat that
- 3:48frog, the quicker it's over. You don't have to think about it
- 3:51anymore. So make your decisions and big
- 3:53decisions and like calculate like do them at your prime when
- 3:57you're the Primus, when you're most alert, most awake, most
- 4:00every meds are kicking in. And for me, that's I got 2
- 4:03choices that's like rated early in the morning.
- 4:05It'd be probably an hour after I took my first dose of meds.
- 4:09It's probably a really good time for me.
- 4:11My optimum time is after my second dose, about 30 minutes
- 4:16after my second dose. So probably about, you know, six
- 4:19hours into my day, that's my optimum time.
- 4:21So that's where I try to schedule my big decisions or
- 4:24think about my big decisions or decide right in those moments.
- 4:27And it's a very, very smart thing to do.
- 4:29So think about that. Figured out what?
- 4:31Figure out what what it is for you.
- 4:33And yeah. And I'd like to know.
- 4:34Let's start a conversation, I mean, in the comments, you know,
- 4:38when do you make big decisions? Are you like me or actually not?
- 4:41Even when you make big decisions, when do you feel that
- 4:44you're most alert in the day? When is that time?
- 4:47Is it, you know, before your second dose, before your third
- 4:49dose, before or whenever? But when is that that optimum
- 4:52time? You really need to think about
- 4:54it because if you don't know, then start thinking about it,
- 4:58right? But if you do know, that's when
- 4:59you should schedule yourself for your biggest task of the day or
- 5:02your biggest decisions of the day.
- 5:03So when is your best time? I'd love to know.
- 5:05Let's start a conversation in the comments.
- 5:07OK, so tip #3 is use tools, right?
- 5:10I use reminders, timers, and even digital sticky notes.
- 5:14Because if I have, if I have to remember one more thing on my
- 5:17own, my head might explode. I mean, how many things can your
- 5:21brain remember? Now pre Parkinson's, I could
- 5:25multitask like crazy. I mean, I could handle multitude
- 5:29of things at the same time, make tons of decisions, you know,
- 5:31left, right and center. And since Parkinson's and you
- 5:33know, and you, if you don't know, then know this, that with
- 5:37Parkinson's multitasking is very difficult.
- 5:40It's extremely difficult for me. It's almost impossible.
- 5:43I have to focus in on one thing at a time and that's why I have
- 5:47to write everything down and have my to do notes on my to do
- 5:50lists and everything to remind me to and I check them off.
- 5:52That was done, move on. That was done, move on.
- 5:55Trying to balance remembering one thing and trying to do
- 5:57another thing. It just doesn't work anymore.
- 5:59And you need to accept that, right?
- 6:01It's not maybe not the same as it used to be for you.
- 6:03You need to accept that and you need to just work within that.
- 6:06You need to work with what you have to the best that you can,
- 6:10right? So work with what you have to
- 6:12the best degree that you can. And to me, that's scheduling
- 6:15out, writing things down and knowing when those prime times
- 6:18are to really get into things. And then what do you need to do?
- 6:22Here's another tip. This is, this is a big tip,
- 6:24right? And this is hard.
- 6:25This one's really hard for me as well, but here it is.
- 6:28Let go of perfection. Not every choice has to be the
- 6:32best 1. You know, sometimes the OK
- 6:33choice is the win. Parkinson's already, Parkinson's
- 6:36already takes enough and we don't need to beat ourselves up
- 6:39over pizza or salad. What am I going to have for
- 6:41dinner? You know, is it really going to
- 6:43impact you that much? Right.
- 6:44And, and you know what? What's the worst thing you do
- 6:46when you're trying to make a decision or you're trying to, to
- 6:49formulate what you know of the plan or the best way to run in
- 6:52this decision? You know, you think about this,
- 6:54what's the worst that's going to happen?
- 6:55So you make the wrong decision, right?
- 6:58Pivot, move on, start again, try again.
- 7:02You know you're not going to get to the answer unless you make
- 7:04some mistakes. That's all the way that that's
- 7:06the only way there is to it. And you know, here's what,
- 7:10here's what people don't always get.
- 7:12Decision fatigues. It isn't just mental, it's
- 7:14emotional. It makes you feel lazy,
- 7:16indecisive, procrastinative. It makes you even feel ashamed.
- 7:20But here's your reminder. This is your reminder today.
- 7:23This is for you today. This is why you made it this far
- 7:25in the in the in the podcast. And if you're still here right
- 7:28now in the podcast, could you give me a like, please, maybe
- 7:31before there's somebody that you, that you, that you know,
- 7:34might need this today. But don't worry, like I mean,
- 7:37after right, right now, let's focus on you.
- 7:39Here's your reminder, OK, You're doing your best.
- 7:44You're making choices while your brain and body are fighting a
- 7:46battle behind the scenes. Think about that.
- 7:49You're making choices. You chose to listen or watch
- 7:52this podcast. That was a choice you made and
- 7:54you know what? That was the best decision you
- 7:56made today. And I, I say that humbly, but it
- 7:59was the best decision you made today.
- 8:00Why? You're investing in yourself,
- 8:03right? You're trying to learn, you're
- 8:04trying to grow, you're trying to live, you're trying to do your
- 8:06best and making decisions that are adding things into your life
- 8:10and positivity into your life and maybe some encouragement
- 8:13into your life and maybe something to reach for and
- 8:15stretch for and maybe you learn something that's an amazing
- 8:18accomplishment for you today. So remember, you're doing your
- 8:22best, you're making choices and the whole time, right?
- 8:25If you have Parkinson's or your loved one has Parkinson's, that
- 8:28entire time you're making those choices while your brain and
- 8:32your body are fighting a battle behind the scenes.
- 8:35Imagine that. Just think about that, and if
- 8:39you choose to shower today, you won.
- 8:41If you choose to rest today, you won.
- 8:44If you decided anything, you're doing better than you think, and
- 8:48that's the bottom line. So you've been staring at the
- 8:51fridge for 20 minutes trying to choose between soup or toast.
- 8:54You're not alone. You're not alone.
