Transcript
- 0:00Quiet, numbskulls. I'm broadcasting. Hello.
- 0:03You're listening to the podcast. So there I was. This is episode 170.
- 0:09Can you believe it, Faith? 170?
- 0:12That's crazy. That's crazy talk. It is crazy.
- 0:17Look, this one is twisted balls and blaming intakes.
- 0:24One of the few times we've gotten a title right out of the gate,
- 0:28man. I I mean, he hit the ground running.
- 0:31You know, at some point in there, somebody said something about losing control,
- 0:36and I don't think we ever had control of that interview.
- 0:39No. We kind of rolled the grenade under the tent flap with the pinball,
- 0:44and these guys went at it.
- 0:47Who are these guys, you might ask? Well, we have this week Otto from Episode
- 0:533, Disco from Episode 104, for Vapor from episode 62 and Pisser from episode 160.
- 1:01And then on top of that, we were joined by strut and not this week.
- 1:06Spico couldn't get in until the second half of the show. So you'll hear Spico
- 1:10next week, but we are breaking this show into two because we had two hours and
- 1:1620 minutes with these guys.
- 1:18So couldn't shut them off. We couldn't, we couldn't shut them down.
- 1:21And they're also known as the young guns. Yeah.
- 1:28Which pisser brought up, which was the whole idea and the impetus behind this
- 1:32show back from episode 160. So really good stuff.
- 1:36Real quick announcement. July giveaway winners were Jason, Todd,
- 1:40Captain, and Kevin. And the books are on the way.
- 1:44Takeoffs and landings by Alger Pete Peterson. So thank you to Dusty Peterson
- 1:49for donating those books so we could send those out to the people who are kind
- 1:52enough to share the show.
- 1:54Yeah, and thank you for sharing the show and congratulations.
- 1:59Thank you also to the other people whose mental judgment comes into question
- 2:03on a regular basis and they crack their wallets and send us money.
- 2:07We couldn't keep doing this without your input and help and support,
- 2:11financial support. So thank you, and God bless you all for doing that,
- 2:15because we're having a ball bringing these shows to you, but we couldn't have
- 2:18kept it going on our own. Very humbling. Thank you.
- 2:22So, wow, some crazy stories this week, starting off with twisted balls, man.
- 2:30I'm the PI. Yes. Not what you're thinking, folks. Get your mind out of the gutter. That's right.
- 2:37It's a play on words, so to speak. Well, when you have a refueling probe,
- 2:42on the end of it, there's a ball that has to be pushed in in order for the fuel to flow past.
- 2:47It's basically a one-way ball valve.
- 2:51Yeah. And somebody's got twisted. And when the fuel system started to repressurize,
- 2:58it caused flaming intakes.
- 3:00Yeah. What was it? The tanker guy said, you already got your gas. Why are you back?
- 3:07Great story. May I have some more, please? Great story.
- 3:12Yeah. It was not stopping. No, it was not stopping. Then there's the wildebeest in a bar fight. Yeah.
- 3:20Let's just say what, she deadlifted lieutenants for fun? I don't know.
- 3:25Yeah, or there's the legend of the wildebeest, and then there really was a wildebeest,
- 3:31and that's a great story.
- 3:33Turned out there was. And then I think Strutt referred to this as the time to
- 3:39shit yourself, or how long is the time to shit yourself?
- 3:43Talking about dropping napalm. Yes, yes. That's right in the heart of the weapons engagement zone.
- 3:51They had to get down there, get dirty, and be in the anti-aircraft zone for
- 3:56much longer than they wanted to be.
- 3:58And their experience from Asia months prior led them to believe that this was not going to end well.
- 4:04So they wound up doing pretty good. But thinking of their months prior in Asia,
- 4:09these guys spent a year and a half to almost two years together in the same
- 4:14group of people for the most part. a very limited turnover, which is just unheard of.
- 4:19So that created a bond among these guys from, from starting in Westpac and going to war together.
- 4:25And, and you could tell that they have a special bond that they let us peek
- 4:30at a little bit this week and next year.
- 4:32That was, that was a privilege. Very unique, very special. I felt very honored
- 4:36to be led into that little group for a couple hours.
- 4:42Right, indeed. And we saw some of the text traffic afterwards.
- 4:47They're savage. These guys are brutal.
- 4:51Brutally savage.
- 4:53And they had their Deadbeat Club, which was also talked about this week.
- 5:00May have involved some, I don't know, some Scope bottles.
- 5:04Allegedly. Yeah, allegedly involved Scope bottles. And, well,
- 5:10you know, Scope has sometimes got alcohol in it, so you can keep your breath
- 5:13fresh. That's the point. Yeah, exactly. Sure.
- 5:18We aren't doing it justice, man. I think we should get out of the way and let.
- 5:22Music.
- 5:23The young guns tell it. Yeah, let's let the young guns tell it.
- 5:25Sit on the ejection seat handle. At night, in the world's smallest cockpit,
- 5:31on the tanker, through the weather.
- 5:36Oh, and to the tanker crew who did that, thanks a lot. We really appreciated that.
- 5:43I'm just kidding. No, I'm not.
- 5:54There I was in the Philippines with Strut. Tom Rutledge, Kingpin extraordinaire.
- 6:09And we are going to go do a missile shoot. And that doesn't happen very often.
- 6:13So we're actually going to get to load up, shoot sidewinder missiles.
- 6:16So we launch off and we head out. We're going to go tank and then,
- 6:21you know, pre-mission tank.
- 6:22And then we're going to drop some flares. We're going to shoot some flares.
- 6:25And it's totally cool because, you know, how often we get to shoot sidewinders.
- 6:30AIM-9, probably LEMAs, I guess.
- 6:33Anyway, so we get airborne. We get out there. We hit the tanker,
- 6:36struck, you know, in and out. And then I plug.
- 6:39And as I pull out, on the end of our refueling probe, it's kind of like a ball.
- 6:44When you plug in it, it kind of depresses the ball.
- 6:47And then the fuel flows down. Well, as I pull out, somehow the ball gets twisted.
- 6:53And so it doesn't see back. And I'm looking at it. Or an emotional twisting?
- 6:57And I'm going, yeah. And so I go to put the probe back in.
- 7:02And so what happens is when you put the probe out on a Harrier,
- 7:05your fuel system depressurizes.
- 7:07So that you don't fuel the tanker, the tanker can fuel you.
- 7:11So when it's sitting out there, I'm depressurized.
- 7:14Well, as I start to lower it, the pressurization system kicks in,
- 7:18and fuel starts pumping out the end of the fucking probe.
- 7:23Premature ejaculation there? Yeah, and it starts going down the intake.
- 7:27So Strutt and I are doing the freaking first afterburner test on a freaking
- 7:30Harrier. We've got a chip going out the back.
- 7:33And he goes, fuck vapor, what's going on? And I'm like, hey,
- 7:36dude, my ball isn't reset.
- 7:41And he's like, yeah. And he says, well, you know, try to bang it back and forth.
- 7:48I think I said, well, when I put it in, it bangs. I said, it's dumping fuel down the intake.
- 7:54He goes, oh, that's what that flame is.
- 7:57And so he's like, shit, maybe we can, let's get the tanker back here.
- 8:02So he calls back to the tanker who's already taken off.
- 8:05And he gets them to come back. And, of course, they're suspicious.
- 8:08They're like, hey, you took your fuel.
- 8:10What do you want? These are a bunch of Air Force, you know, freaking boys.
- 8:13They want to get back to freaking Clark and start playing with little freaking
- 8:16brown boys. Oh, oh. Gucci boys.
- 8:19Yeah, exactly. Yeah, Air Force boys. Anyway, so Strutt gets them to come back.
- 8:23Strutt, I don't know what you told him. He made up some shit.
- 8:26Gets them to come back and put the basket back out.
- 8:29And he's like, all right. And luckily, I think it was a KC-10, right? Right, Strutt?
- 8:35That was a long time ago, Maper. Okay, I think it's Casey. Anyway.
- 8:41It's a big freaking basket. So Strutt's like, why don't you go back in and replug
- 8:48or just try to bang it back into place?
- 8:52And I'm like, all right. Because I'm thinking to myself, we've done the math
- 8:56already. And we're like, if I can't get this in, I'm going to flame out.
- 9:01Because if you don't pressurize, people say, well, you can gravity feed.
- 9:05Well, you can't gravity feed with an anhedral wing.
- 9:08Remember that, you know, your tips are lower so the fuel doesn't flow into the
- 9:13engine because, you know, and he's doing it.
- 9:15That doesn't work too well. So what kind of thing like?
- 9:18So here we are. What was I called? Scarborough Shores.
- 9:21So Strutt and I are out over Scarborough Shoals with the frick out,
- 9:24you know, off the west of the Philippines.
- 9:27And I'm like, yeah, if I can't, you know, I'm punching out and we can't make it back.
- 9:32And Strutt's, you know, you know, you know, analyzing this shit and talking
- 9:36me through. He's like, all right,
- 9:36dude, put your probe back in that basket and try to bang it back in.
- 9:41So basket comes back. I kind of pull up, put the probe inside,
- 9:46and then I just kick like right where as hard as I could and just bang it.
- 9:51And it breaks part of that basket.
- 9:55And I'm like, fuck. It didn't go down the intake. Luckily, it went over the
- 9:58wing. I'm like, well, that was lucky.
- 9:59Their basket's fucked up. But guess what? The ball's back in place.
- 10:04It's like, hey, what happened? And I go, dude, the ball's back.
- 10:06He goes, well, put your probe in.
- 10:08I did. He goes, you got pressure? I go, dude, it got pressure.
- 10:11He goes, and, you know, Strutt, Strutt is not going to miss a missile X.
- 10:16That's a story of this. He's like, let's go.
- 10:20We go right back in. The tanker leaves with a broken basket, and we just leave.
- 10:26And Strutt's like, you ready? I go, yeah. He's like, all right,
- 10:29baby, let's go shoot some fucking winders.
- 10:33That sounds like a night at you at the Oak Club.
- 10:36Well, there's that. And that's how all great aviation tales begin.
- 10:41Greetings, everyone. Repeat here listening to So There I Was.
- 10:44And I think that's a first for us, Fig, that we've got a show title,
- 10:49Twisted Balls, right in the opening story.
- 10:53Fig, where are you, brother? Well, I'm in an undisclosed location and in my
- 10:57aluminum tube on vacation. And it is my distinct pleasure to welcome...
- 11:03Holy shit let's see so we got auto disco pisser
- 11:07yeah yeah did i catch them all yeah
- 11:10so here let me let me run through it real quick so we got auto from episode
- 11:14three twos off winchester disco from episode 104 coming down like a gun safe
- 11:19with a lot of guns pisser from episode 160 young guns and vapor from episode
- 11:2462 stay in the ejection envelope spike goes running a little bit behind and is going to join us,
- 11:29which means I'm going to go to Strut,
- 11:32with whom I went to.
- 11:35PLC Senior Camp with in the summer of 1983.
- 11:40And Disco will be interested to hear that we share a common friend named Staff
- 11:45Sergeant Gladstone from that very summer.
- 11:49The Devil Spawn himself, who was our platoon sergeant.
- 11:53So real quickly, Strut, what got you into
- 11:56marine in aviation well thanks
- 12:00for having me well so there i
- 12:02was my brother took me to air shows and you know
- 12:06so we'd see the blue angels we'd see harriers we'd see the thunderbirds things
- 12:10like that and i just said well i have to do this for a living because it's cool
- 12:15right this is the coolest thing ever so when it came time to give up smoke and
- 12:21dope and getting all liquored up in high school and go to college and get serious,
- 12:25is I called the Air Force recruiter, realizing they probably had airplanes.
- 12:31So I called them on the phone, and I said, hey, I want to be a pilot in the Air Force.
- 12:37And they said, how's your calculus? And I hung up.
- 12:42What's that? That didn't last long. My cow's fine. What?
- 12:45So then I called the Navy. I went to the phone book and went to my rotary dial
- 12:50phone and called the Navy. And some guy answered and said, hey,
- 12:54I want to be a fighter pilot in the Navy.
- 12:57And he goes, hang on a second. And he's holding his hand over the phone.
- 13:01He's going, chief, chief, do we have airplanes in the Navy?
- 13:07So I hung up. So now I'm at zero.
- 13:11My dreams are shattered in two phone calls. And so I'm wandering around my community
- 13:16college in between classes in Orlando, Florida, the only college I could get into.
- 13:22And so, you know, it's in between classes. They sort of ran it like a high school.
- 13:27And so I decided, well, you know, I'll walk through building three rotunda,
- 13:31you know, maybe, maybe I'll bump into Amy or something.
- 13:35So, rotunda three is usually team...
- 13:38And so usually Rotunda 3 is just jammed up with people.
- 13:43So I walk in there and there's nobody in the Rotunda. It's like somebody threw
- 13:49a damn anthrax grenade in there.
- 13:51Okay. So I looked in there. I go, what the fuck is going on?
- 13:55And the Marine recruiters are there and they've got a nice table set up and
- 14:01nobody, everybody's hugging the walls to get to the nearest exit.
- 14:04It so i marched straight across these guys and
- 14:08they've got a damn video showing an a4 jato take
- 14:11off and all this and i go where do i sign and they
- 14:15start telling me well here's how much money you're going
- 14:18to make here's what the i go i don't need to hear any of that shit where do
- 14:22i sign and that's where it all ended and i they they signed me up for plcs i
- 14:28passed the air test on the minimum score and uh here i am if the minimum wasn't
- 14:34good enough it wouldn't be the minimum that's right,
- 14:36that's right that's right all you gotta do is just get over the finish line,
- 14:42that's right what do they call the last guy in medical school doctor doctor.
- 14:49Fantastic now if you want some more gory details i'll tell you those but that's
- 14:52the short story nice no very cool so yeah so we wound up doing plcs together
- 14:58did did you commission right away or did you have another year of school to
- 15:02go after that? You commissioned after that?
- 15:04Yeah, 84 I commissioned. Okay, yeah. Then went off to, I was a golf company, 84.
- 15:13Okay, okay. So I was Alpha 185, which started in October of 84 because of the, you know.
- 15:20So you guys were all caught up in the general baloney thing. Yep, yep.
- 15:25Go to the fleet for a few years. Yeah, they took my ass off. hey
- 15:29they drug our asses in there and said hey we
- 15:32got too many people laying on the beach down in pensacola you
- 15:36can leave you can pack your shit and leave this is
- 15:39at the end of tbs and i'm like what they
- 15:42go you can leave or or you can pick from this very long list of really great
- 15:50mos's and give up your air guarantee or you can pick from this very short list
- 15:56of shitty mos's and We'll send you to the fleet for a year, and then we'll send
- 16:00you to flight school later.
- 16:02I was an aviation supply officer, school-trained, and I ran a damn warehouse
- 16:07down in Beaufort before I went down to Pentecola to only find these honey company
- 16:13shitbirds ahead of me. Wow.
- 16:17What did you call that? Somebody said, was that General Bologna?
- 16:22What the hell is that? It was Bologna, but it was Bologna, really.
- 16:26That that's the general that came up with this great idea yeah
- 16:29pulled us all out and sent us to the fleet mistake it was
- 16:33a it was a manpower problem because then
- 16:35we finally made it down to pensacola and we
- 16:39are all mustering up there at milton drinking coffee
- 16:42and and they had an emergency meeting main side
- 16:45pensacola get your asses down here right now
- 16:48and your pt gear and we all ran down there and
- 16:51they go oh all you guys that went to the fleet that
- 16:54was all a mistake from now on
- 16:57every ai class is nothing but marines we
- 17:00got to get you caught up unbelievable so there
- 17:03was a giant bubble there really was no bubble which they popped yeah no bubble
- 17:09it's it's so it was actually a circle jerk with a piece of bread and somebody
- 17:15had to eat the bread yeah so anyway the the good news was is I went through,
- 17:21we went through flight school fairly quickly.
- 17:25Well, okay. I know these, there's a little. So Strutt, you remember,
- 17:30you know, Maloney came down and talked to us and remember the Navy all of a
- 17:34sudden showed up and said, Hey, we'll take everybody. Remember that? Yeah.
- 17:38There was a guy in my class. His name was Mark Dola.
- 17:41He was in my bootcamp, you know, cause I did OCS after college and he'd been
- 17:46a wall street stock trader you know pretty successful knew a lot of people when
- 17:52all that shit came down with maloney he wrote a letter to his congressman and his senator,
- 17:57and that's why the navy showed up and they said they won't
- 18:00take everybody i remember the marine corps said you can't have them and the
- 18:04navy said yeah we can fuck off so that's they did a bunch of guys jump ship
- 18:10oh man we had in my class we probably had 30 of people jump ship i was walking
- 18:15I was walking down the hall to go, eat me.
- 18:18And we had a Cobra pilot. He was the SVC for, I don't know, second platoon or third or whatever.
- 18:24And he grabbed me and he pulls me to his office and, you're disloyal,
- 18:28puke, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 18:31So I go, okay, I'll stay.
- 18:37How'd that work out for you? I ended up going in the air because I kind of wanted to go to IOC.
- 18:41And IOC was freaking awesome. And then serving for a year, or it was like 10 months.
- 18:47Serving for 10 months in the infantry was one of the best times I've ever had in the Marine Corps.
- 18:53It was epic. I had such a good time. Well, how did you get infantry and Strutt got supply officer?
- 19:01How did that work? Because I finished way ahead of him in TBS.
- 19:07I wasn't going to go there. I was just curious how that worked.
- 19:12Tom, were you in a golf company?
- 19:15Yeah i was in honey man i was in honey company
- 19:18we didn't get offered the navy we didn't
- 19:21get offered the navy disco we didn't get offered that they
- 19:24dirty their dicks on you hey so hey so i got to
- 19:27throw this one out there too so vapor is talking about philippines and
- 19:30strut and strut and all that stuff i got a great story you're gonna love this
- 19:35one so and i know you'll remember this vapor and i know pisser will for sure
- 19:40i mean i don't i don't know if i will or not but anyway we're so the philippines
- 19:44back back in your game when we were young men so back back then
- 19:50we uh it looks way too real bro go down and have
- 19:53these you sit these big banquet tables in the oak club at the
- 19:55philippines it was freaking epic and you'd
- 19:58get you know you'd bring all the little you know little girls would bring
- 20:01in the menus and you'd have all this food and all this liquor and all this crap and
- 20:05we always we'd all be sitting down there you know talking trash
- 20:08and telling the stories of being idiots and vapor when
- 20:12vapor got done musking girls doing that one and and getting the skin to to regenerate
- 20:20on the top of his toes we'd go to the club and so we're eating chow and we're
- 20:26kind of watching vapor because vapor's sitting there telling stories and stuff
- 20:28and anyway vapor would grab somebody's water glass and you go.
- 20:35And he put it back down and we'd all look at the water glass because it'd be
- 20:40like in front of Turbo or it'd be in front of somebody else going I wonder if he's going to drink that,
- 20:46and they would just keep telling the story and we're just going all looking
- 20:51at the glass and there's all this food coming and all this service it was awesome,
- 20:56it was awesome service in the Philippines It was, it was the last bastion of American colonialism.
- 21:04This is the rated G version of the Philippines, but I remember that the fad became the blowguns.
- 21:11And so, you know, you had those blowguns with the feathers on them,
- 21:14and you had the plastic bead with the metal spike in it.
- 21:18And so these things were fairly impressive.
- 21:21I had a velocity of about 400 per second, and we'd go shoot them in all the
- 21:26walls at the O Club, and you could barely pull the damn dart out.
- 21:29Well, I figured out that you could pull the damn metal spike out of the dart.
- 21:34And so you were only shooting the ball so
- 21:37we'd sit there and lie in ambush and uh somebody'd walk into the damn room and
- 21:44i'd lay down this bead and i'd pump it right into the center of their chest
- 21:48and i mean we we had the best lee harvey oswald impersonations in the world
- 21:55where everybody would completely,
- 21:59fold up expecting this damn metal spike hit him.
- 22:05That's the cleanest story I can come up with. Do you guys remember,
- 22:09I'm going to tell the story of Dog Straw's interaction with the Mew Commander.
- 22:15This is right after Cope Thunder. We've just finished up Cope Thunder, big exercise.
- 22:20Which was awesome. We're all at the club and we're celebrating.
- 22:24Everybody's drinking and they've got the little band going all that type of
- 22:27stuff and if you guys remember the Mew
- 22:30commander's there and he's talking to a
- 22:34distinguished gentleman in a suit and Dog hears
- 22:37him talking and they're talking about like operations and stuff and you know
- 22:40Dog's had a couple of drinks so he walks over there with only the subtlety Dog
- 22:45could show and says and kind of starts listening to him and he says you know
- 22:49like that ain't how you fucking do it and he starts lecturing him and you know
- 22:54the distinguished gentleman says something,
- 22:56and he goes, yeah, you know what the fuck you're talking about, and blah, blah, blah.
- 22:59And the Mew commander says to the distinguished gentleman, sir,
- 23:03what the major meant to say, and that's when Dog clues in and goes,
- 23:08well, if that's the Mew commander and he called that guy, sir, Dog goes.
- 23:14You know, I know he outranks me, but it sounds like you outrank him,
- 23:18and I don't know who the fuck you are.
- 23:21So he says this to the general, and right about this time, the general's like,
- 23:30you know, major, you've, you know, about to start ripping into him,
- 23:33and Rosie was hearing this.
- 23:35And so we were kind of all standing over the drinking, and Rosie runs over to
- 23:40us and says, quick, come on.
- 23:43Everybody starts singing happy birthday to dog. And so if you remember a couple
- 23:47of, we jumped up on the stage, we sang happy birthday to dog and Rosie runs over there.
- 23:55I go, dog, sir, sir, you got to join us for your birthday celebration.
- 23:59And he said, this is right in the middle of this general's about to fricking
- 24:02rip him a new asshole. And here's that. I see.
- 24:08He goes, well, you're out of line, but I see it's your birthday.
- 24:12So why don't you just enjoy your evening and have a good time?
- 24:16And that's how we got fricking dog out of some fucking serious shit.
- 24:21And you're talking to Rosie Greer, right? Rosie Greer.
- 24:24And I forget who got up on the stage. Was it one of you guys got up on stage
- 24:28and started singing happy birthday?
- 24:30Because I remember, yeah, one of you guys, a couple of you, took the mic out
- 24:35of the singer, little Filipino band,
- 24:38and a couple of the guys ripped the mic out of their hands and just start singing
- 24:43it. I remember Rosie doing that, man.
- 24:45I remember Rosie doing that and singing the song by Axl Rose, too.
- 24:50Oh, Sweet Child of Mine. Sweet Child of Mine. Oh, yeah.
- 24:55He thought it was Axl.
- 24:58You guys remember the legend of the Wildebeest, yeah? The Wildebeest.
- 25:03Remember, we all heard about the Wildebeest.
- 25:06Well, the Wildebeest was real.
- 25:09So we landed, We ended up in the Oak Club at Okinawa, and we're all sitting
- 25:14at the big table at the Oak Club, and the Wilbur Bees is sitting at the damn bar.
- 25:17So this is the first time the young guns realized that this person actually existed, right?
- 25:24And she was a female navigator on 135s, and she was a power lifter.
- 25:29I mean, I sat there and watched her do five reps with two and a quarter in the gym.
- 25:33Well, she sits there and gets drunk at the end of the bar.
- 25:37She sits there and gets drunk at the end of the bar and we'd never
- 25:40talked to her and so she looks over at
- 25:43dog and she walks over there and reaches across
- 25:46the table and grabs him by the flight suit and snatches him out of his chair
- 25:50y'all remember that yeah i do she put his hands on him and pulled him out of
- 25:55his chair and we're all we're all up and and then we got to know her and you
- 25:59know we're all going out drinking with her and everything and she attacked me one night out in town,
- 26:05I ended up in a bar fight with the wild beast.
- 26:08Well, you remember we, Disco passed out that night. And while he was passed
- 26:12out, we borrowed some of her makeup.
- 26:16And we did Disco that night. So Disco woke up a little while later with lipstick,
- 26:22pretty little fingernails, kind of back to what he used to do back in Slowtown.
- 26:27Oh, boy. And he's like, what's going on?
- 26:30We're like, Disco, man, don't ask, don't tell, baby. and we think the Beast
- 26:35got attracted to him because I think she was so masculine, she was a dyke.
- 26:41Oh, fuck, man. I remember that chick. I saw her at the gym, man.
- 26:43The first time I saw her, I went, oh, yeah, that's her.
- 26:46I was in her room. I got to her room, just for the record.
- 26:52That's when we were getting the makeup. Oh, I saw her doing lat pulldowns of
- 26:56like 180 or 200. I'm like, goddamn, you're wrong. You're a freaking beast.
- 27:01So the Okinawa O-Club, do you remember Disco breaking up a fight where a Cobra
- 27:06guy swings at Sal? I'm trying to intervene.
- 27:09Yes, I remember that. Sal Ducks. He was a Cobra guy.
- 27:13You're pushing on his chest, and he freaking sucker punched your ass.
- 27:17No, no, he was swinging at Sal. And Sal Ducks, I was trying to get in between.
- 27:23Sal Ducks, and I got freaking nailed.
- 27:25And all you guys did was laugh.
- 27:30I'm down on the floor bleeding. Everybody's laughing. Hey, how about Vapor's
- 27:35Toes? Can we talk about Vapor's Toes?
- 27:37Yeah. Let's talk about Vapor's Mosque. not again,
- 27:42so we've got who's in that room it's Rosie Pisser Disco and Vapor yeah that
- 27:49was that place was a freaking remember we got that pallet of beer and we,
- 27:55pallet jacked it over broke it down brought the pallet in it was like $2.50
- 28:00of case and we drank all of it,
- 28:05and Vapor destroyed the top of his teeth He ruined it, man. He soiled it.
- 28:15Hey, before we get down this path too far, I was telling, repeat earlier,
- 28:19I want to give a shout out to the person who kind of really kind of built 542.
- 28:24And a lot of people don't know this, but, you know, for the audience,
- 28:28the Harrier was a brand new aircraft.
- 28:30And these stores here, we went to Westpac. We were the first full squadron to
- 28:35go to Westpac. And so before you deploy, you lock in for six months.
- 28:40And the reason we're all together right now is because of one guy and it's Strutt.
- 28:46Strutt was called by the CEO to build the squadron. And so Strutt went down to 203.
- 28:52You know and disco was already in the squadron with strut and he
- 28:55said i want you to go down there and pick out the guys
- 28:58you need like nine lieutenants or whatever and so strut went down to 203 and
- 29:03he was interviewing you know he was talking to his instructor buddies and and
- 29:07came over this and and i remember i remember strut told me this story because
- 29:10strut was the admin officer and so he went down there and was talking to guys
- 29:13he goes look i don't necessarily want the I want the best pilots.
- 29:16I want good pilots, but I want good dudes.
- 29:18And he is the reason, like me, Pisser, Rosie, Beave, Turbo, Sal.
- 29:27He's the reason we are all in 542 is to stretch the guy that built that squadron.
- 29:34And then if your audience wants to know.
- 29:37We're on a group chat right now. I mean, we've been chatting with each other
- 29:41for freaking, we've been friends for 36, and the reason we are is because Strutt
- 29:46built this team, and then we did six, so we're locked in for six months.
- 29:51We do a six-month Westpac deployment.
- 29:53We come home. We're home for two months. We're gone another eight months.
- 29:58So we were together, like, straight for, like, 22 months, you know,
- 30:03and that's why, you know, I think back on when I got to the squadron and I'm
- 30:07like, I've been friends with these guys for 36 years because Strutt put this
- 30:11freaking team together.
- 30:12So right now, here's the fucking Strutt building the fucking young guns and
- 30:17building the 542 that kicked ass in Westpac and fucking Desert Storm.
- 30:24I appreciate the accolades. However, we need to make a couple of brief corrections here.
- 30:30I was the, I was, I worked in ops at the time. I was the operations officer during the war.
- 30:37And Disco gets half the credit here. Yeah, I know it's YouTube.
- 30:41Because it was Disco and I that were entrusted by Smoke to go do this mission. Okay?
- 30:49And so it was Smoke who was unpopular with the older pilots in the squadron.
- 30:56And they remembered Cox. And so me and Disco were getting hell from Chief and Scar.
- 31:03And we realized we weren't going to survive it. And so when Smoke realized that,
- 31:07you know, he needed us to build this squadron up because he just kind of needed
- 31:13some help with some young meat, he sent me.
- 31:17And it was actually me and Disco that did that, that went down there and did those interviews.
- 31:21And it was Smoke who enabled the whole thing.
- 31:24And so the story went like this.
- 31:28Well, which ones should we take, Strut?
- 31:31And I go we should take all of them
- 31:34and so
- 31:37basically there there were there were
- 31:40no bad apples in the bunch there wasn't any
- 31:43any standouts really everybody was awesome so we took this big huge recruiting
- 31:51class out of 203 and it changed the entire complex of the squadron which at
- 31:58that time was seeded in, well, you can't do that.
- 32:01Well, why? Because you've never done it.
- 32:04And so we went to a way more aggressive command structure and trained way harder
- 32:11and did way more aggressive things after that.
- 32:14And so Disco, here's you raise a glass Disco.
- 32:18Yeah, Disco. Sorry, buddy. And that, and if I can tell one more story about
- 32:22this, cause the guy is so humble, he'll never say that.
- 32:25Not only do we have that, but then we also picked up some guys on the way.
- 32:29And the guy I want to point out right now is a guy who took,
- 32:33that actually went the first Harriers to Westpac, which was VMA 331.
- 32:38They didn't have a full squadron, though, so I don't get credit for the full
- 32:41squadron deployment. They did a partial squadron.
- 32:43He does six months in Westpac, then gets recruited and cross-decks right to 542.
- 32:50So he does 12 months straight in Westpac, comes home two months,
- 32:56stays with us, does Desert Shield, Desert Storm.
- 32:59So this gentleman does six months, six months, 12 plus eight, 20, 20 out of 22 months.
- 33:08Raise your toes to Ed Otto, the fleet green, who has the record out of 22 months deployed.
- 33:17And in the entire time I was a monitor and cut orders on people,
- 33:20I never know anybody who did that.
- 33:22So not only we did that you know with disco and freaking
- 33:25strut built we recruited guys
- 33:28in like auto who's a fucking stud who never
- 33:32said no to the fucking country or his squadron or his buddies
- 33:35and said yeah i'll fucking do that i don't give a shit how
- 33:37hard it was he would do it and then who
- 33:41went down and got like some of the two or three guys like that spiko
- 33:44who did that strut in disco who went
- 33:46and got him you know i don't really know
- 33:49i i would love to just to say that that
- 33:53i did know how that happened but i can't tell you because it
- 33:57all happened so fast that a lot of these
- 33:59experienced guys like clance and spiko i think
- 34:03that they just they probably were qualified and and i that may have happened
- 34:08at the group level somebody else may know more than i do about that but all
- 34:12I want to say is Otto it was a pleasure flying with you in that damn war and
- 34:17I was glad that we were together and you kept my ass alive and I appreciate it.
- 34:23We had some great time. I'll never forget the one.
- 34:27We used to always, we hook up with the F-18 because for people that don't know,
- 34:32for the first part of the war, they had these what they call K-boxes.
- 34:37And there may have been another box, but essentially they were kill boxes that we had on our map.
- 34:40And so our mission was, like Strut and I would get up every day and we'd fly
- 34:44out there. And we'd typically do two missions. We'd turn it in a small place called Tanajib.
- 34:48So we'd fly out there with wall-to-wall, either Rock Eye or Mark 82s,
- 34:52which are, Rock Eye is a cluster bomb and the Mark 82 is a big 500-pounders.
- 34:55And it would also have a full gun.
- 34:58So we'd go out there, we'd link it with the F-18. The F-18 would find a target.
- 35:01He would circle. We'd do the wagon wheel at, you know, 15,000 feet or whatever.
- 35:05We'd roll in, get the, he'd either laser or he'd put the Willie Pete,
- 35:09you know, the white phosphorus mark out there.
- 35:11He'd get a mark and, you know, we'd find the target. He would roll in,
- 35:15lock the angle rate bombing set on, you know, the thing in the nose there that
- 35:18was a TV camera, essentially.
- 35:20That would give us height above
- 35:21target. And then, you know, either Strutt would lead or I would lead.
- 35:25Boom, we'd drop our bombs and, you know, Shaq hit the target, whatever.
- 35:29And then we'd always stick around because we'd say, hey, we still got a gun.
- 35:33Let's see if we could find a target. So I'll never forget this one time there were these fuel dumps.
- 35:39There's this fuel dump and they were like these big, I don't know,
- 35:42oil or gasoline filled drums that were probably the size you see when you drive
- 35:47down the road, like on the highway in New Jersey or something like an oil refinery.
- 35:51And we're like, Hey, let's get that with the gun.
- 35:54So auto's in, you know, shoot off my 200. And then he's off Winchester. Oh, sorry.
- 36:04We look back over my shoulder and here's this big top on this oil can that It
- 36:08just goes off the top. Yes. We got that one.
- 36:17Well, you can't let them, let them have any gas. Can you? That's bad. Can't let them have gas.
- 36:24We got secondary. Yeah. And kudos to the accuracy that fricking gun, huh?
- 36:30Oh, man. I was happy with it.
- 36:34Yeah. Hey, I'll tell you another thing about Otto. You know,
- 36:37like I said, Otto was fucking, you know, so operational and fleet smart that
- 36:42he got sent up to the MET for the big fucking battle plan. This is it.
- 36:48And they told me, he said, hey, go along, take notes, you know,
- 36:51whatever the fucking Otto says.
- 36:52So Otto and I get in a truck, and we hit up, like, the MET command post.
- 36:57They're going to do the big freaking brief of what's going to go on.
- 37:00And we get there, and I ought to remember what happened.
- 37:03The Marine Corps casualty estimates, people always think, oh,
- 37:06it's a big cakewalk, there's a storm. And I'm like, man, the casualty estimates were ugly.
- 37:10The Marine Corps casualty estimates were 50%, but the Brits casualty estimates
- 37:14came in at 70%. And it was politically unacceptable back in the UK for that to happen.
- 37:20So we're up there at the MEP, and what people got to remember is the Marine
- 37:23Corps, you know, we don't have that much armor.
- 37:26I mean, we've got some tanks, but, you know, nothing compared like to
- 37:29the army and so we needed some tanks so they
- 37:32assigned the brits to us because the brits you
- 37:35know these units out of germany were very heavy mech and they had
- 37:38a lot of uh tanks so we'd gone up and trained with like the scotch world
- 37:42to groom guards and stuff and uh you worked with those
- 37:44guys and so we're already we've been you know coordinated with them we're
- 37:47gonna fly closer support for the marines and the brits you know
- 37:50brits like to go to war with the marines because especially after what happened in
- 37:53korea they don't trust the fucking army but they trust the marines and
- 37:56so um we're up there at the briefing and what
- 37:59happens remember that auto they canceled it and there
- 38:02was a guy named colonel carter and he had just
- 38:05gotten word from like freaking headquarters that said
- 38:08the police aren't going through the breach with the marines cassie's too high
- 38:12and they pulled out and they were going to join the left hook with the uh with
- 38:16the army and so we go all the way up there and come back and they're like what
- 38:20you know and they're like i remember talking skipper's talking to autos what's
- 38:22what's the battle plan like we We don't know now it's changing because the Brits
- 38:26just got pulled out and we go,
- 38:27Brits got pulled out. That was all our fucking tanks.
- 38:30So you probably remember more of that stuff about what actually went on, but jump in.
- 38:36No, man, that's – honestly, I don't remember too much about it,
- 38:39but that, you know, sounds right.
- 38:42Yeah, that was fucking crazy. So we did all that work with the Scots Roll Dragoon guards and stuff.
- 38:47By the way, we learned – we had boiled egg sandwiches, shit like that,
- 38:51and we drove – remember we drove that Cintar, that little frickin' like APC
- 38:56they had, Scout vehicle. That thing was cool.
- 38:58I mean, these guys are like straight up to the desert rats kind of guys,
- 39:01a bunch of Brits whipping around and, you know, frickin' tan armored personnel
- 39:04shit. and it was pretty freaking cool.
- 39:06But anyway, yeah, so people think like it was a cakewalk, but,
- 39:09man, it was not looking real positive. It was a little bit somber.
- 39:15And, you know, before that stuff kicked out, I mean, everything turned out well
- 39:18because, you know, I think we did a great job, but, you know,
- 39:21it was not looking real good there at the beginning.
- 39:23I think I don't know. I remember we sat in our damn ready room,
- 39:28and that damn lieutenant colonel battalion commander, He sat there and cried
- 39:32and told us that we had to save his ass if we didn't wipe out this artillery,
- 39:40that they were all going to die.
- 39:41This guy begged us to save. Do you all remember that?
- 39:46He came in our ready room and sat there and begged us to save.
- 39:49I said, I was talking to somebody. I was sitting next to somebody.
- 39:53I said, is this damn grunt on his knees in front of us air wingers?
- 39:58Is this the first time in history this has ever happened?
- 40:01He's begging us to save his ass? Yeah, okay, we'll do it. Yeah, we'll do it. Let's go.
- 40:08Hey, you guys don't know. About, I don't know, nine months a year ago,
- 40:14Venom got hold of me because there was a guy, Lieutenant Colonel Kurth,
- 40:18who had a HMLA squadron over there.
- 40:20He was trying to get hold of somebody, and we got paired up,
- 40:23and we started shooting the shit.
- 40:24Somehow, we started talking a little about Desert Storm and stuff,
- 40:27and I had mentioned how I met General Myatt.
- 40:30You know it is a coc and he looks
- 40:33at me and he says you know i'm personal friends with general my
- 40:36and i'm like what in disco the guy lives in san francisco no
- 40:39shit and i was like you gotta be kidding me he said yeah he said let me talk
- 40:43to him maybe you guys get on the phone god we did a 45 hour freaking zoom call
- 40:49like this and i fucking talked to general my like you know 35 years later after meeting at the COC.
- 40:57And he told me... That was after you got shot down, right?
- 41:00Yeah, so... Yeah. Yeah, I had gotten a helo ride back because they were sending
- 41:05orders by helicopter, and so I got a helicopter ride, and I'm sitting in the helo.
- 41:10If you guys remember, there was that counterattack out of the Al-Burgon oil
- 41:13fields, and they had gotten within 300 meters of his COC, and he wouldn't leave.
- 41:18So anyway, the air officer sees me, and he's like, General Mayotte needs to
- 41:23fucking see a hairy guy shot down that's out there supporting his grunts and stuff like that.
- 41:30Anyway, he told me later, he gave me some numbers. He said like.
- 41:34We had like 48 artillery attacks on us.
- 41:39And he said, we counter-batteried like 28 of them with our organic artillery and stuff that they had.
- 41:49But the other ones, he said, everyone was taken out by Harriers.
- 41:55He said our counter battery you guys
- 41:58did like one third of the counter battery for
- 42:01the second marine division and took out every one
- 42:04of them and i wanted to tell you guys that so he was like i
- 42:07couldn't believe the guy he's got to be like i don't know how old he was but
- 42:10he's fucking old but i mean i'm like holy shit i said no i never really researched
- 42:14that but great guy and you know lives in san francisco super good dude hey disco
- 42:20what's the name of that hotel in san francisco the Marine Corps. Marine Memorial Hotel.
- 42:25Yeah, he's on the board of directors of that. Yeah, he was actually,
- 42:28he was the CEO of the Marine Memorial for... Now it's a Huey guy.
- 42:33It's the CEO, but before him was Mike Myatt.
- 42:37And yeah, he was real involved in the Bay Area.
- 42:40But yeah, it was... I remember getting talked to by, I think it was Myatt,
- 42:46or it was one of the Marine generals saying, hey, look, you guys are my long-range
- 42:50artillery. That was Boomer.
- 42:52Yeah, it's Boomer. That's right. Because you said he was basically saying,
- 42:56hey, they've got this South African, I think it was South African artillery
- 42:59that could outstick our artillery.
- 43:03Yeah, we need to get rid of this stuff because we can't, they can outrange us.
- 43:08So you guys are going to have to take this stuff out. That's your mission in
- 43:12life. I remember we were just constantly just hammering on that stuff.
- 43:16We'd go with a, I remember the strike package. We'd go with a harm shooters.
- 43:20We'd go with a strike package, all that stuff. We'd just go with all that stuff
- 43:25to just take them out. I remember that. I got some numbers for the audience.
- 43:29I can't work some of this stuff down real quick. The coalition had 38 nations.
- 43:33We had 680,000 on the Allied side.
- 43:37And Iraq had 540,000 in Kuwait. Usually you want to attack with a three-to-one advantage.
- 43:43Yeah, we didn't quite have that. The Iraqis had 4,200 tanks. We had 3,500.
- 43:48The Iraqis had 3,000 artillery and 2,800 APC.
- 43:52So that's what you're talking about, Jessica. Remember, Boomer came down and
- 43:55talked to our mag and said, hey, that's what I need you guys to do.
- 43:58Because 3,000 freaking pieces of artillery they're going to be advancing into.
- 44:03And I think we can all look back on that fact and just go, the casualties were
- 44:07light because that's all we did for freaking 30-some days is hit self-propelled
- 44:12artillery, rocket launchers, and freaking fixed artillery nonstop.
- 44:17I mean, we also were the only idiots that did it.
- 44:24I think it was Strut that came up with
- 44:27the tactic because we had it's like okay you have
- 44:30to go in there and take this you have to slow down you have to go low
- 44:33get shot at and drop this shit you have
- 44:36to wave at the iraqis in the trenches we're like are you fucking are you fucking
- 44:41out of your mind and i think tom was the one that came up with his tactics that
- 44:45we use well all i was telling you disco all i was telling you disco is that
- 44:51the weapon actually had carriage and release limits.
- 44:56It did? So you don't kill yourself. That had to be adhered to.
- 45:00And they were low and slow without much dive angle, and that was the hand we were dealt. Yeah.
- 45:07What was that? You and I had one of the first videos.
- 45:11Remember, we did a 45 or 60 degree dive that we pulled out to do a 5 to 10 degree,
- 45:18because the shit was designed to get spread.
- 45:21If you come down vertically, they just hit in a spot.
- 45:25Yeah, we had to go slow and low. Yeah, you got to scrape them.
- 45:30Guys, let's go back three spaces. We really need to go back three spaces because
- 45:36we're missing a lot of the whole desert storm thing if we don't at least say this.
- 45:42We had just come out of Asia. We had just come out of to Crow Valley and they
- 45:49shot our asses off in the Crow Valley.
- 45:54I mean, let's face it. It took us a while to figure that shit out.
- 45:58And in the Crow Valley, we had all kind of terrain to hide behind.
- 46:02Well, out in the desert, we didn't have shit to hide behind. No, we didn't.
- 46:05And so all I knew was when they put those fire cannon flap wheel shit linked
- 46:11up with that 57 millimeter gun, they're going to shred our asses.
- 46:16Oh, yeah. That's what we all thought.
- 46:18We were sure of it. And so I remember me and Otto are sitting there briefing
- 46:22and, you know, it's the, you know, we're talking about what's going to happen out there.
- 46:27And I go, Otto, and we termed it, how much shit yourself time was there going to be?
- 46:32And that was the metric of coasting in to coasting out.
- 46:36And that was a measurable amount of time called shit yourself time. Remember that, Otto?
- 46:43No, man. So that's what we termed it. so we knew we knew and you know what those
- 46:50son of a bitches never never fucking tied up their,
- 46:56acquisition and fire control radars to those 57 millimeter guns and thank god
- 47:02they didn't because a lot of us wouldn't be sitting here right now,
- 47:06that's 100% true,
- 47:09that's freaking nuts.
- 47:11Holy shit yeah we were lucky We had a good campaign.
- 47:15I mean, you can just tell, like, you know, the whole process,
- 47:18right, I think worked really well.
- 47:19And, you know, the way that we fought the war was really very effective.
- 47:24Right. I mean, getting you know, we had a good rollback plan.
- 47:27I would say you could see it actually on hold.
- 47:28If you go fast forward to modern times, like look at what Israel did in Iran.
- 47:32I mean, you know, not to tell too many secrets, but I mean, taking down the
- 47:36integrated air defense, the struts point, you've got to take out the long range radar.
- 47:40Then you've got to take out the other, you know, sort of some of the fire control
- 47:44radars that are controlling some of those pieces.
- 47:46And there's some key pieces to those surface terror missiles and the other guns.
- 47:52Right, that if you take those out, they're essentially firing blind, right?
- 47:56They can still shoot, but it's a lot less accurate.
- 47:59So I think once, you know, tribute to like what we did in Desert Storm and then
- 48:03later in OEF, you know, we had great tactics as, you know, the U.S.
- 48:07And allied forces. And really, that's a tribute to, you know,
- 48:11how we ended up with this few casualties, even in our squadron,
- 48:15you know, as we did and and other squadrons and then on the on the Marine Corps
- 48:20and, you know, any any of the ground forces. Right.
- 48:22I think we really had some of the things, like you say, we learned from the
- 48:26Crow Valley was how to do that. Right.
- 48:29You know how not to get yourself in that situation.
- 48:32It all comes down to lethality and vulnerability. Yeah, there's another thing
- 48:36that the audience needs to hear.
- 48:38This is important for the audience to hear. Let me finish up on the napalm stuff,
- 48:43because what people need to understand is that thing was designed for jungle warfare.
- 48:47And so when these guys are talking about, when Strutt and Otto are talking about
- 48:51it, so the audience knows, when you drop napalm, you've got to come in very shallow.
- 48:57I mean, so we're coming in like 1,000 feet. Here they are!
- 49:01They're not even going to fucking fly below 10,000 feet.
- 49:05Yet we're delivering a weapon that has to be delivered, but like under 1,500
- 49:10feet and like a 5 or 10 degree dive.
- 49:13So we were the only aircraft that dropped napalm.
- 49:16And the frickin', for whatever reason, the stupid PR, they didn't want to say we were burning them.
- 49:21So they said, oh, they're lighting off the oil trenches.
- 49:25And I'm like, shit, none of us lit off a fucking oil trench.
- 49:28We lit up in infantry trenches.
- 49:31And for three days straight, the biggest balls in that fucking theater were
- 49:35the Harrier pilots who came in at 20 some thousand feet.
- 49:39Did a 60 degree dive, did a fucking high G pullout to get into a five degree
- 49:45dive going over infantry trenches with all the fucking triple A still there,
- 49:50dropping napalm across to kill
- 49:53these guys, suffocate them in their bunkers and hit a big psyops thing.
- 49:57That they think that God is throwing fire on them. Nobody else was fucking asked to do that.
- 50:02The only other community that I respect that really put their balls on the line
- 50:06were the Brent Tornado guys who delivered the Dorendale runway cratering bomb,
- 50:12and they had to go down that runway at a few hundred feet,
- 50:15and they're the only other guys that flew a profile like us did.
- 50:18So people say, oh, fucking Harry's, you weren't so well, I got shot.
- 50:21And I'm like, nobody else fucking flew the profiles we did.
- 50:25That's what I'm talking about, baby. That's what I'm fucking talking about.
- 50:29Rosie and I dropped napalm on T-72. There's more to that story, Vapor.
- 50:35Wait a minute. Who else flew napalm? There's more to that story, Vapor.
- 50:39All right, Strut. Roll in. Not everybody, not every Harrier squadron dropped computed deliveries.
- 50:45You know, that's another thing that we did operationally. We dropped computed deliveries.
- 50:51Hey, Tom, who else flew napalm besides us? They were freaking stupid enough
- 50:55to. I don't think there was any other, there was any other Harrier squatters that flew besides us?
- 51:01Napal? I thought we all did it. 331 didn't, but I thought we all did it.
- 51:08Yeah, it went on for a couple of days.
- 51:12It's like three days. I got three days of napalm strikes.
- 51:16It was like three days. Now, you remember the software problem we had with the cluster munitions?
- 51:22You remember you'd come in for the dive and there was no sight.
- 51:25Remember, nothing came up until 10,000 feet. We didn't even know that, so we hit there.
- 51:33Yeah, you're just like hanging in and going, Hey, it's going to come up any second.
- 51:39Yeah, and so what we had to do is 542 made the difficult decision to drop computed
- 51:48with the shit that wasn't working right because we knew we were going to have
- 51:53to go low to get the right amount of density with the cluster bombs.
- 51:57And not every squadron did that.
- 51:59There were guys that, there were squadrons, Harrier squadrons that dropped DSL.
- 52:04Oh no shit that's bullshit yes yeah
- 52:09you know that thing you know i'm really proud of
- 52:11the fact i actually look this shit up too you know the the one
- 52:14thing about the harrier is we not only were the
- 52:17only freaking tack air that never used a tanker we also
- 52:20didn't have a dump target that bullshit like they'd
- 52:23go out well it's two thread or this and they just had like
- 52:26a dump target and you know which is like drop your bombs
- 52:29from 25 000 fucking feet we never did that shit
- 52:32if we weren't down in there with a fucking target id we didn't
- 52:35drop and that's part of being a fucking professional attack pilot because don't
- 52:39fucking forget fire pilots make fucking movies attack pilots make history god
- 52:44bless america i am i got a question when you're done fix say that again.
- 52:53Fighter pilots make faggot fucking movies and
- 52:57attack pilots make history look at i'm gonna
- 52:59move my f18 i know right hold on
- 53:03torpedo planes at midway think about it those fucking
- 53:06torpedo planes how much fighter cover did all those torpedo squadrons have at
- 53:09midway none and they all got fucking shot down but they threw the fucking japanese
- 53:15fighters down to the water so the dive bombers came in there no fucking fighter
- 53:19cover there and they sunk the hear you the Kaga,
- 53:23the Soryu, and the Akagi.
- 53:25One moment like that, attack pilots changed the fucking history trajectory of the world.
- 53:32They dirtied their dick. Goddamn right, baby.
- 53:35Of the world. Okay. Something you said triggered this. And I want to get either something Pisser said.
- 53:43I don't know if it was the ex-o or the CO that said, you guys at one point had
- 53:49fired I don't know, like 9,000 rounds in four days of 25 millimeter.
- 53:57And the skipper said, or whoever was asking, well, what are you guys shooting at? Everything.
- 54:05Anything. Can you add any flavor to that, the specific?
- 54:11Because anything, I remember shooting at what it was, a BTR-60,
- 54:15some faggot was shooting, and then I saw the little, you know,
- 54:19you see that it's the, it looks like a camera shoot. You go,
- 54:21hey, they're going to take my picture.
- 54:22No, those are the muzzle shooting at your ass. So I turned on and I shot,
- 54:25I mean, we shot everything.
- 54:31Hey, what? Can I talk about this?
- 54:36Yeah, we never came back with bullets, and I know Turbo challenged the number
- 54:41that I threw out there, but Turbo was flying with dogs, so those guys probably
- 54:44weren't shooting and everything.
- 54:46But Strut, I think, introduced the concept of the hot gun, where while we were
- 54:50in our dive run for the bombs, we would uncork the gun before and after the pickle.
- 54:57So, track, track, pickle, and we never came back with bullets.
- 55:04If Rosie and I ever came back with bullets, it was something weird happened. Because the gun jammed?
- 55:11Yeah. I can't have a good story on that one. Go.
- 55:14And this is pretty funny. So I was with Clance one morning, and it was – I can't think of the name.
- 55:18It was like a dock complex on the coast in Kuwait, south of Kuwait City.
- 55:24And so Clance and I were flying in there. We dive on this thing,
- 55:28and I lock it up with my ARBS TV at the end of the dock.
- 55:32You know, and I could see all these AAA pieces out there. I'm like, this is going to be epic.
- 55:38So I squeezed. So I got locked up. I squeezed the trigger. And all of a sudden, my RTV goes.
- 55:45So the bullets are going all over the fucking place. And then the ground just opens up.
- 55:50And both plants and I are like, you know, one of the, like, bug.
- 55:55So we both just, you kind of level up, peel out that way and head toward Iran.
- 55:59We're just going across the street.
- 56:01First of the golfer going, holy shit, look at all the guns shooting at us.
- 56:07I mean, there's flak blowing up all around us. I'm like, and we just got to
- 56:10go away. I'm like, that was really a freaking brilliant move on my part.
- 56:15Well, do you guys remember Mongoose in an all-pilots meeting holding a piece
- 56:22of paper in front of his, and he was just shocked by how much 25 millimeter
- 56:26we'd shot. Do you guys remember that? Yeah, I do.
- 56:31He's like, what are you shooting at? We're like fucking everything.
- 56:35That's right before we got,
- 56:38snatchers lecture on no more brown star loving and tadpole soup and all that shit.
- 56:44You're asking me to be professional. Yeah.
- 56:51I'm going to tell he's not here, but Wade Straw, Dog Straw,
- 56:55we actually finally got him to tell the story of
- 56:58his silver star and i think that's where we kind of got that
- 57:01i mean we we kind of you know mongoose you know was a great
- 57:03ceo and so on but we also took on a lot of the character of
- 57:07our opso operations officers major wade straw and i remember it was like pisser
- 57:12and me and and just you know a couple guys we're all at the bar we finally we're
- 57:17finally you know kind of cornered dog we're like you got to tell us how you
- 57:20got your silver star in vietnam and he's like well Well, you know,
- 57:25we had to suppress an LZ and, you know, we had to shoot a lot of shit.
- 57:28And he stops talking. We're like, there's got to be more to it.
- 57:32And he says, well, you know, we shot till we fired everything.
- 57:36And we're like, okay, that can't be it. And he looks at us and he goes, I mean, everything.
- 57:44And we're like, define everything.
- 57:48And he's like, the rockets, the cannon.
- 57:54They're N16 carbines. They're 38 caliber service revolvers.
- 58:01And he said they used to go to the club, get the highball glasses.
- 58:06You stuck your grip. You pulled the pin up your grenade, stuck them in there, threw them out.
- 58:11They broke and the glass would break and the boom would pull and they would go off.
- 58:16So they were over the VC canopy open when they were fricking Winchester.
- 58:22Emptied their freaking M16 carbines
- 58:25had their 38 revolvers and were throwing grenades that's why he got a silver
- 58:31star remember him telling they only got a silver star for that remember him
- 58:35telling the time he was shit faced and he got called for a mission he jumped
- 58:39in the helicopter and he goes I was baked,
- 58:43they're out there just shooting everything,
- 58:47that guy that's why we emptied our guns because he was a 30-inch service revolver. He was a cool dude.
- 58:54Hey, you guys would know this, but when I was working for Coca-Cola,
- 58:57I was in Honolulu, and I saw Tiger Tail server going, huh.
- 59:03So I ran him down. His dog was the CEO.
- 59:06He had, I can't think of his name, Cubby and Anacarico, Chico.
- 59:12And he was doing what Pitzer never did, which was lose money to dogs.
- 59:21He was cleaning those two fuckers out so he was wiping them out and I'm sitting
- 59:25there talking to him I'm like hey so this is classic dog I love that he was
- 59:29so awesome he was like hey you stupid fucker what are you doing,
- 59:35he had that voice so I go hey sir I got a question for you what the fuck do
- 59:39you want to talk to me about,
- 59:42I go how do you like being a lieutenant colonel he goes you know what disco
- 59:45the thing I like best about being a lieutenant colonel is there that many more
- 59:49people I can rub my balls all over his face.
- 59:56That was classic. Oh, shit, boy.
- 59:59That guy was a great American, man. He was awesome. Every time he got drunk,
- 1:00:04he said, where's Pisser? I need my money. Yeah.
- 1:00:09I would clean him out. He owed me like thousands of dollars.
- 1:00:16Hold on a second. Were you playing cards? Where you rolling dice What were you
- 1:00:20doing Poker And I'm going to kick his ass Hey listen You remember Colt Lake What's that Oh yeah Yeah,
- 1:00:32So we went up there. It was more expensive than it should have been.
- 1:00:36We come back, and all this money's like disappeared.
- 1:00:39So, you know, Sue Dooley, the group calls me up and goes, hey,
- 1:00:42because I was an S4. Thank God.
- 1:00:44Favorite job in the world. So I go over there. I'm like, hey,
- 1:00:47what's up? She goes, hey, you guys are missing about $500.
- 1:00:51No, it was like $2,000. It was all the rental car money. It was a lot.
- 1:00:55A lot. A lot. And I'm going, what? So I'm trying to figure all this stuff out.
- 1:01:00And then finally I figured out what it was so Dog had taken his vacation money
- 1:01:05with Elaine and he'd spent it to cover his gambling debts with the urinator and I'm going I can't,
- 1:01:13there's no freaking way I'm going to take the hit for this because I can't afford two grand.
- 1:01:17So I go over there I go back to the squad and go hey sir you didn't have to pony up.
- 1:01:22My wife would fucking kill me but that's not my problem You got to back up I
- 1:01:29got it. I got to set it up for you.
- 1:01:31So what happened is we're going to Cold Lake, Canada, and the skipper told dog.
- 1:01:36Hey, take like seven planes, meet us there and get this many flight hours.
- 1:01:40So it's dog, six pack, scar, me, pisser.
- 1:01:47And so we're going to head there, but we go.
- 1:01:50I remember they said, hey, we'll go there via freaking Salt Lake City.
- 1:01:53We go, fuck, why don't we go to Hill Air Force Base? Let's go to fucking Reno and go to Tahoe.
- 1:01:57So we go there via there well while we're in tahoe we
- 1:02:00get in this fucking you know shitty little hotel and we're hanging
- 1:02:03out there and i remember the next morning we're sitting out so we
- 1:02:05all go out that night the next morning we're all meeting by the pool you
- 1:02:09know it's one of those little motel pools you know shitty place and dog
- 1:02:12comes walking out and he comes down and he's in those dolphin shorts
- 1:02:15he used to wear those like remember those like blue ones and he walks down and
- 1:02:19there's a freaking ashtray and he digs around finds like a cigarette butt and
- 1:02:24like lights it and starts smoking it and we're like hey sir how'd you do with
- 1:02:29the casinos last night well let me tell you.
- 1:02:33The lights ain't gonna be going out in fucking reno
- 1:02:36tonight if you know what i mean they can pay their electric
- 1:02:39bill he lost all the
- 1:02:42money for the rental cars so no old lake
- 1:02:45we're walking from the barracks to
- 1:02:48the squadron and smoke is driving by or you
- 1:02:51know he's like why are these guys walking everywhere and i remember he
- 1:02:54stops by oh what and he remember he's joking he says uh
- 1:02:57did you guys miss the van again and we're a lot
- 1:03:00looking like what van and then and it's like by the third day he finally stops
- 1:03:04his car and goes why do you guys keep missing the van we're like sir we don't
- 1:03:07we don't know what you're talking about he goes there's supposed to be a shuttle
- 1:03:09van and that's when he found out we didn't have the shuttle van and that there
- 1:03:13was money was missing and that's when he called disco and then said where's
- 1:03:17the freaking money and how come there's not vans,
- 1:03:20It was in Westpac and Dugent Storm when I kicked his ass in poker to the tune of thousands.
- 1:03:27Holy shit. There he is, man. That guy's a fucking great American, man.
- 1:03:32Sticks is in the background doing magic.
- 1:03:37Fucking dog. What a guy.
- 1:03:41Hey, I gotta tell you guys. Do you realize how lucky we were to have that guy as our opso?
- 1:03:47How lucky were we to have that guy? Unbelievable.
- 1:03:51It's freaking awesome. The thing was, I remember when you were talking about
- 1:03:54Strut, because I vaguely remember
- 1:03:56you going down the street and kind of grabbing some guys out at 203.
- 1:03:59But I remember what we would do is they'd come in in the squadron because that
- 1:04:02place was a freaking shit show.
- 1:04:05Because I don't know if you remember when we all got caught,
- 1:04:07because I remember it was Sal.
- 1:04:10Because Sharon went to Gustafson and said, hey, is there any way you can keep
- 1:04:15my fiancee from going to 542? And he went, what's going on at 542?
- 1:04:20So the ship kind of rolled downhill, got to smoke. He called us all in,
- 1:04:24and Strutt took a – I mean, Lyman, me, Vern, Strutt.
- 1:04:30It was like five or six JOs. And we're kind of, you know, just kind of going
- 1:04:34back and forth. And then I remember Tom throwing a couple fucking hand grenades.
- 1:04:39It was beautiful. And I said, well, hey, since he's doing it.
- 1:04:45So I started throwing them. And after we're all done, he goes,
- 1:04:48okay, you guys can go. He goes, hey, Disco, can you stick around for a minute?
- 1:04:51And, I mean, we had a moment, me and Smoke.
- 1:04:56It got pretty messy. But the thing was, as we started getting new guys coming,
- 1:05:02because that place was a freaking hot mess, the culture was a disaster in 542.
- 1:05:07Because I remember when I went to the city. Well, the older guys were loyal to the old skippers.
- 1:05:13Yeah. I mean, it was the culture. And they weren't loyal to smoke. Yeah.
- 1:05:18It was just a mess. I remember, yeah, because I remember Bubbles hated smoke.
- 1:05:21And there was a lot of shit going on there.
- 1:05:25And basically, I mean, I remember that we would get new guys in the squad and
- 1:05:28we'd pull them aside and say, you know, I remember you grabbing them at 203
- 1:05:31and we were going out and we're talking to people.
- 1:05:33And it's like, okay, here's what we're trying to do here.
- 1:05:36We're trying to create a culture and create a great place to be.
- 1:05:41And it ended up being that 542 was the only squadron that you wanted to go to.
- 1:05:46It was the coolest place with the coolest people that had the most fun.
- 1:05:54Now, what grenade did I throw? I don't remember this. How much trouble did I get in?
- 1:06:00Oh, you didn't get in a lot of trouble. I got in more trouble than you did.
- 1:06:05But I was starting going, I was kind of going, this is getting awesome.
- 1:06:13I remember you saying this because he said something about Spud Winkle and you
- 1:06:18go, Spud, he's a fat ass shit bird. And then it just,
- 1:06:25escalated from there. I'm like going, this is going to be fucking awesome. I love this, man.
- 1:06:33Hey, I guess what the audience to understand is it's all about morale and the
- 1:06:40intangibles of combat power.
- 1:06:41And there's a disco, you know, he reads a lot.
- 1:06:45We read a lot. There's a guy named Lord Moran who wrote a book called The Anatomy
- 1:06:49of Courage. It took place the world, the trenches of World War One.
- 1:06:52And he said that and he's looking at, you know, the courage,
- 1:06:56you know, go over the frickin top over and over and trying to keep morale up,
- 1:07:00which is the true level of combat effectiveness is not counting tanks and shit
- 1:07:05like that. Otherwise the Iraqis would have kicked our culture.
- 1:07:08It's culture. It's fucking all those intangibles. And so he talked about in
- 1:07:12there, he said the person that was loved in the trenches was the person who
- 1:07:17did their job and had a positive complexion and outlook.
- 1:07:22And so I was so fortunate to go into
- 1:07:25five 42 with pisser and all the
- 1:07:27young guys like this because we had guys like you
- 1:07:30guys the audience has picked up on the fact Disco is
- 1:07:34just a character and I don't give a shit how lousy crap
- 1:07:37was you had these guys like
- 1:07:40Disco and Strut who always could put a positive spin on things could smile and
- 1:07:47laugh no matter how shitty stuff got whether we're in a mud soaked trench in
- 1:07:51Korea or we're sweating our ass off in a fucking tent in Saudi Arabia that's
- 1:07:56what makes the difference and there's been great things written on this.
- 1:08:00It's the intangibles of combat power. It's morale.
- 1:08:03And I was fortunate enough to go into a squadron. Like Disco said, best fucking squadron.
- 1:08:08Strutt and Disco built this thing and I've been lucky enough.
- 1:08:11And to this day for the audience to know, there's what, 15 of us still left
- 1:08:15on that 542 chat that we had and we text each other every day.
- 1:08:20We know each other 36 fucking years.
- 1:08:23Thank you guys. Greatest squadron ever, man.
- 1:08:26Best group ever.
- 1:08:31Well, one thing just to add to that. One of the great morale things we had,
- 1:08:38if you remember this, when we were in Desert Storm, was we created the Deadbeat
- 1:08:42Club. And I still have that picture.
- 1:08:44That was in the tent that struck in Turbo and, you know, Disco.
- 1:08:50I think you were in that tent, maybe Vapor. We were right next door. I slept next door.
- 1:08:55But we set up the Deadbeat Club and we we would periodically before the war,
- 1:09:00you know, they didn't have any booze in Saudi Arabia.
- 1:09:02But it may or may not have been the case that we would take the squadron vehicle and drive to Bahrain.
- 1:09:10And we did actually start off in Bahrain before we moved the squadron up to Saudi Arabia.
- 1:09:14And it may or may not have been the case that we would drive to Bahrain across
- 1:09:18the causeway, which did have booze.
- 1:09:20And we may or may not have pulled up the squadron vehicle with booze after visiting
- 1:09:25with the nurses who were still in Bahrain, in the big city, and then come back
- 1:09:29to Saudi Arabia to stock our supply.
- 1:09:34And it may or may not have happened that every one of our relatives in the United
- 1:09:40States sent us booze and scope bottles with food coloring.
- 1:09:46And it may or may not have happened that we might have known the nurses.
- 1:09:52Well, it may or may not have happened that we didn't drink really before when
- 1:09:57the war was getting ready to kick off.
- 1:09:59We probably didn't drink much at all. But after the war ended, we sure as hell did.
- 1:10:04Yeah, I remember that. I remember we getting chewed out by Snatcher and Mongoose.
- 1:10:09Like, where did you guys get all this stuff? Like, what stuff?
- 1:10:12Talking about. Yeah, what are you talking about?
- 1:10:16We had a visitor from a fellow squadron who came to the Deadbeat Club after the war.
- 1:10:21And we had to drag him back. And unfortunately, we drug him on the tops of his
- 1:10:26boots and literally wore off. I don't know if you remember this.
- 1:10:30Wore off the tops of his boots down to the steel toes.
- 1:10:33So that was quite a problem the next day for him.
- 1:10:40We got Hobsing. We got Calvin Klein. The guys we grabbed in,
- 1:10:47because I remember Hobsing got kind of like shit can by 311.
