- 0:00laced up let's go it's time for better with the
- 0:05boys welcome back to gridiron updates i'm roberto
- 0:17this is jacob kevin's is behind the cameras yo
- 0:22kev making us sound beautiful that's right we're
- 0:26here for a little tent It's so much easier when
- 0:31it's just the two of us. It is, totally. And
- 0:33when we just do it once, also, it's very, you
- 0:35know, it's coming. So we're talking about news,
- 0:39injuries, everything coming up to the soup or
- 0:42bowl. Yeah. What do you got for us, Jacob? Not
- 0:46a whole lot of injuries to report, thankfully.
- 0:49Yeah, I think everyone, both teams came out pretty
- 0:53healthy. Yeah, yeah. For the Super Bowl, I guess.
- 0:55Yeah. And then they've got a week off to get
- 0:57better. Yeah. Unless there's some freak accident.
- 1:00True. Fireworks. Yeah. Stay away from fireworks.
- 1:04That's right. Don't touch them. Because it's
- 1:07in California. It is. Which I'm going to assume
- 1:10that fireworks are probably illegal. But yeah,
- 1:13it's still easy to acquire. Probably. I bet.
- 1:15Actually, because I've seen a few videos over
- 1:17helicopters flying over Los Angeles over the
- 1:214th of July and they party. Yeah. So. So, yeah,
- 1:26not a lot of injury news. I have notes on a lot
- 1:29of head coaching stuff since we last spoke a
- 1:32week ago. A lot of movements. Yeah. A lot of
- 1:35new peeps. Where do we start? I guess we could
- 1:37start with my Ravens hiring Jesse Minter as their
- 1:40head coach. He was not your leading candidate.
- 1:44He was not. Where would you put him on your list?
- 1:48Two or three. I mean, I'm OK. I still think I
- 1:52would have preferred an offensive minded head
- 1:54coach over a defensive one. But the more that
- 1:59I look at it and think about it, it makes some
- 2:02sense. But it also but it's also not getting
- 2:04away from the Harbaugh because. Because he was
- 2:12with John in Baltimore, and then he went to Michigan
- 2:15with Jim, coached there with Jim, and then went
- 2:19over with Jim to the Chargers. So he's had and
- 2:24been in this Harbaugh tree. Are they considered
- 2:28the same tree? I think they have to be. Because
- 2:32they share coordinators back and forth, it seems
- 2:36like. They're like, hey, check out this guy.
- 2:38He's pretty good. And then everybody just gets
- 2:42passed around. So I don't hate it. You don't
- 2:46love it. I don't love it. Okay. Okay. All right.
- 2:50And we can stay in the AFC North. Mike McCarthy,
- 2:54surprise, signing as the head coach. Very surprised.
- 2:57Do you think Aaron Rodgers had a voice in that
- 3:01decision? No. No? I don't think so. I don't think
- 3:06the Roonies are that kind of ownership. You sure
- 3:08he wasn't somewhere in Central America, a little
- 3:12ayahuasca, and Mike McCarthy was the calling?
- 3:17No. No? Okay. I think that's a little bit of
- 3:20a stretch. Well, that's what we do here on the
- 3:22Gridiron Updates. I don't think it hurts. Bring
- 3:26in McCarthy because it's an offensive scheme
- 3:29that Aaron Rodgers is going to be familiar with.
- 3:31And if he wants to stay in Pittsburgh, it's a
- 3:34coach that he has experience with, is familiar
- 3:37with. Even though they may not necessarily have
- 3:39the best off -the -field relationship, they worked
- 3:43pretty well together for their entire tenure
- 3:47together. They did win together, so that's an
- 3:50opportunity. Why do you think Aaron Rodgers is
- 3:52done? Or do you think that's probably open that
- 3:55door open to a crack now? I think that opens
- 3:57the door some for him to come back to Pittsburgh.
- 4:01If he doesn't come back to Pittsburgh, I think
- 4:04he's done because I don't know where he would
- 4:08want to play in a brand new system somewhere
- 4:11else. No Vikings? No, I don't think so. All those
- 4:17weapons? I don't think KOC would want to do that
- 4:19to McCarthy. It's like he's already got a Ferrari,
- 4:23right? Or a Porsche, whatever you call it. But
- 4:26we've driven it for one year now. And we're done.
- 4:30No. You got minimum two years with me. Yeah.
- 4:35That's kind of my gold standard. Unless it's
- 4:38really bad. Yeah. Because it's like, where else
- 4:42would he play? Excuse me, not Buffalo. In Miami.
- 4:45Arizona possibly has an opening. The Raiders.
- 4:52Well, the Raiders will have Fernando. True. Or
- 4:57if you want to believe rumors that they're going
- 4:59to trade for Lamar, I think that's kind of a
- 5:02harebrained idea. I could see something interesting.
- 5:06Now that Harbaugh's gone, I mean, I won't be
- 5:10totally surprised if something happened with
- 5:11Lamar. Because how old is he now? 28. All right.
- 5:17That'd be interesting. But there definitely has
- 5:20to be a restructure because how does his contract
- 5:22look? There's a lot of dollars there. Restructuring
- 5:26his contract is one of Eric DaCosta's priorities
- 5:29this offseason. I mean, they have a decent amount
- 5:32of salary cap space as it is, but to restructure
- 5:36Lamar's contract to free up some additional dollars
- 5:38now and push it out would be beneficial for the
- 5:42team. Yeah, and I don't know. I still think you
- 5:44guys are kind of still in your window. Lamar
- 5:47still has a window available, and there's a lot
- 5:49of pieces and everything because there's not
- 5:50really much changing on the roster aspect other
- 5:53than his availability was the worst attribute
- 5:56for the Ravens. But that's how it happens in
- 6:00the NFL in the old game of tackle football. That's
- 6:04right. People get hurt, unfortunately. What else
- 6:06do we got? So we got McCarthy up there. We also
- 6:09have Brady. Yeah, Joe Brady. That got announced
- 6:12late yesterday or early today. So in -house,
- 6:17which is, I always like to see in -house hire.
- 6:21I think, yeah, there's benefits to that. And
- 6:24I think that goes, like, shares a similar aspect
- 6:26to Jesse Minter getting hired. Like, there's
- 6:31some kind of... And I was talking about this.
- 6:34There's some kind of culture that's there that
- 6:36you want to keep or continue to grow and develop.
- 6:38Because culture, I think, does wonders for a
- 6:42lot of these locker rooms nowadays in getting
- 6:46players to buy into a system and actually perform
- 6:49or fill a specific role. And that's the nice
- 6:53thing about in -house. He already knows the facility,
- 6:57knows all the players, all the players know him.
- 6:59He's been running the offense. So nothing on
- 7:02that aspect. It's just going to be a defensive
- 7:03coordinator they're going to have to pick up
- 7:05and maybe get a wide receiver one. I don't know
- 7:11if Coleman. I mean, he's a rookie, so like I
- 7:13say, for all rookies, I give him a second year
- 7:15before I make a decision with the overall value
- 7:20or where he fits in the team. But, yeah, what
- 7:24else? For coaching movers. So we still have openings,
- 7:29obviously, for the Raiders, Cardinals, and Browns.
- 7:31Those are the only three still left to open.
- 7:33Nobody wants to be at the Browns. Everyone's
- 7:35saying no currently that we know about in the
- 7:38public. So that also makes me think that all
- 7:42three of these teams are waiting for Patriots
- 7:46and or Seahawks to finally wrap things up. Well,
- 7:52it's happened in the past before we're coaches.
- 7:55I mean, I guess with KOC, did we announce it
- 7:59or we already kind of knew that he was coming
- 8:01here before the Super Bowl? I can't remember.
- 8:05But either way, yeah. Well, and that stuff might
- 8:08leak in the next week. That's true. You know,
- 8:10so that'll be something to stay tuned with on
- 8:14that aspect. And I bet you the rumors will be
- 8:16flying because the conversations will be getting
- 8:19very repetitive and you got to find some new
- 8:20stuff. That's right. During media week. Broncos
- 8:24canned their offensive coordinator, Joe Lombardi,
- 8:28today. Bye. Yeah. And Brian Dable is taking the
- 8:34role of offensive coordinator for the Tennessee
- 8:36Titans. Interesting. I think so, too. I mean,
- 8:40that's where he made his bread and butter in
- 8:43the NFL. And I think Cam Ward is a version of
- 8:48Josh Allen. And that's kind of how Dable was.
- 8:53the second offensive coordinator for Josh Allen.
- 8:56We saw a tremendous amount of growth for him.
- 8:58So I think that could be good for Cam Ward in
- 9:01the coming years as long as they're able to at
- 9:04least stay or keep that in place. Yeah, sometimes
- 9:07the players will make your career. You become
- 9:10a really good offensive coordinator for some
- 9:12reason. Oh, so we got those three left wide open.
- 9:17Oh, let's talk about something here that I just,
- 9:20oops, I got to open it up. What'd you find? A
- 9:23little mock draft, kind of where we're sitting
- 9:25at now. Since everyone's kind of in their positions,
- 9:28at least we got the top 10. Raiders. Yeah. Looks
- 9:33like probably they're going Fernando. Mendoza.
- 9:38Mendoza from the National Championship. Indiana
- 9:41Hoosiers. I mean, he looks like the real deal.
- 9:45Yeah. Big dude. Got arm talent. He does look
- 9:50like Kirk Cousins in my eyes. But I also think
- 9:54he's a bigger, more athletic Kirk Cousins. Yeah.
- 9:58Even though Kirk was pretty athletic in college.
- 10:01But I think he's just a different athletic. But,
- 10:06oh, I don't know if he did see the play of the
- 10:08championship game. where he did the famous run
- 10:12for the touchdown to win it. Well, when he was
- 10:15back in Cal, there was a play where they were
- 10:18playing Miami, and 31 came up and just stuck
- 10:21him. Oh, yeah. And then the game was over on
- 10:23a fourth down play. Oh, I didn't see that. So
- 10:25this was the same play. 31, I forgot his last,
- 10:28starts with a B. was the guy that exact same
- 10:31guy exact same guy that he trucked that he spun
- 10:34out of and then scored dove into the end zone
- 10:36so sorry about that we're just talking about
- 10:38college and made me think of that also so we
- 10:41got jets number two uh arville raw reese kind
- 10:46of from ohio state is projected right in here
- 10:50The Jets could always use a little more defense,
- 10:52especially with Aaron Glenn there. I could definitely
- 10:55see a position there. Yeah, Cardinals, they got
- 10:58Reuben Bain going there. You did see him play
- 11:02in the national championship game and saw his
- 11:04versatility. Also, Titans are in four, and that's
- 11:08Mangola, if I'm saying that right. I don't know.
- 11:12So, yeah, Miami, oh, tackle. Yeah. Was he the
- 11:17dude with, I think he had the, yeah. Big neck
- 11:19roll? Yeah. After that, you got Giants. It looks
- 11:23like David Bailey out of Texas Tech that kind
- 11:26of pictured there. Cleveland Browns followed
- 11:29up with Carnell Tate from Ohio State, the receiver,
- 11:33which would be really the first, other than the
- 11:37quarterback, skilled position out of the top
- 11:40five. And then the commanders with Jeremiah Love
- 11:43out of Notre Dame. I think he could definitely,
- 11:46because after losing Brian Thomas Jr. Yes. To
- 11:55the 49ers. So they traded him. And then they
- 11:57had Eckler, and then Eckler went down right away.
- 11:59And then Merritt, the rookie, stepped up nicely.
- 12:01But if you pass up a talent line, that'd be a
- 12:04spot where I could see them taking a position
- 12:06for Washington. Yeah. They need a thing. They
- 12:12need a healthy, strong running game to help keep
- 12:15some of the pressure off of Jaden Daniels for
- 12:17sure. Yeah, and when Thomas was rolling for that
- 12:22rookie year, and that's what they thought. He
- 12:27was electric for sure. He was definitely so.
- 12:29We're getting down later, Saints. They got Makai
- 12:34Lemon from USC because there's been talks with
- 12:38Chris Alave maybe departing there or getting
- 12:42traded. So I can see why they're projecting a
- 12:45receiver there. That's interesting. I guess I
- 12:48kind of see it because Alave surprisingly is
- 12:51an older receiver than I think we take for granted
- 12:55or think of. He's still in his rookie case. I
- 13:00don't think he's still in his rookie deal. and
- 13:03they maybe did sign same year as jefferson then
- 13:06because the uh because he's maybe he's a year
- 13:08older than jefferson and then there's he's had
- 13:12the injury like he's see it feels like he's always
- 13:15getting hurt every year which is unfortunate
- 13:17some of it like early on was like concussions
- 13:20and uh and things like that so yeah he's been
- 13:24pretty injury prone so i think also the fans
- 13:26have kind of you know like but when he's healthy
- 13:29he's been pretty decent right yeah the availability
- 13:33is the best ability yeah the old bud grant sign
- 13:35there uh also ninth uh kansas city chiefs probably
- 13:39was the last time they've drafted in the top
- 13:4110 uh cornerback may soar delane of virginia
- 13:46tech on this projection That's a lot of defense
- 13:51going in that top 10. Well, that's kind of the
- 13:56strong point of it. This year, into the draft,
- 14:00it's elite Ed Rusher class, weak on the QB outside
- 14:04of Mendoza, strong receiver and D -line depth.
- 14:09So that's why they're projecting a lot of trades,
- 14:13a lot of trade -outs in this draft. So that kind
- 14:16of wraps up. Oh, yeah, the Bengals coming in
- 14:19at 10th, and they had Walter Nolan from Ole Miss,
- 14:22the old D -tackle. Um, so, and definitely the
- 14:27Bengals need some help on that defensive line,
- 14:29um, just on that defensive side. And so that
- 14:32is kind of your top 10 mock draft. Something
- 14:35to start thinking about because after this next
- 14:38game, uh, that's all we'll be talking about is
- 14:41draft. Yeah. So yeah. Mock drafts, keeping your
- 14:46fingers crossed that, uh, and free agency. That's,
- 14:49that's going to be a whirlwind is a whirlwind
- 14:52too. Yeah, the free agency is fun for a little
- 14:55bit. You get those little spikes here and there.
- 14:57You hear about a guy or then they decide. And
- 15:00then there's like a lull for a moment where,
- 15:03you know, the top ten get signed. And then it's
- 15:06just kind of, you know, oh, that's a nice pick.
- 15:09You know, like Jason Hargrave or Alan we picked
- 15:11up. You know, actually those are big signings
- 15:14for us. So for the Super Bowl, just kind of a
- 15:20little fun facts we're looking at here. Youngest
- 15:25duel of quarterbacks, Sam Darnold and Drake Mays,
- 15:29since Garoppolo versus Mahomes. So, you know,
- 15:35year that Super Bowl was. San Francisco. Four
- 15:39years ago? Okay. Was it, I think? Maybe five.
- 15:43Set in records. Lowest AFC title game in decades,
- 15:47almost, since like 82. Oh, points scored? Points
- 15:50scored on that aspect. Oh, what else did we have
- 15:54fun? It's kind of interesting on the Super Bowl
- 15:56part of it, though, is it's two defensive -minded
- 15:58coaches, which especially in today's NFL, everyone
- 16:01going offense. I have offense wins in the NFL.
- 16:04They've totally switched. To see two defensive
- 16:06-minded coaches make it kind of adds a little
- 16:09interesting twist. Do you think the NFL is shifting
- 16:11now back to defense as the thing, or is the rule
- 16:15makers not going to allow that? We're going to
- 16:19put rules in place to limit. Yeah, to limit head
- 16:25coaching candidacy for defensive coordinators.
- 16:27Yeah, make some kind of quote on that or something
- 16:30like that. But yeah, so... Super Bowl is in a
- 16:36couple weeks from now. We're going to do another
- 16:39show next week. We'll get in depth with all the
- 16:42X's and O's and get all our picks and stuff.
- 16:45So any other final thoughts here before we kind
- 16:48of wrap up today? Yeah, actually something crazy
- 16:51that came through the news line late this afternoon.
- 16:55I wrote it down because that's how late it came
- 16:58through. Bill Belichick was eligible for Hall
- 17:02of Fame induction and he went through voting
- 17:04and he did not get the votes required to be inducted
- 17:09into the Hall of Fame. He ain't going. Bill Belichick
- 17:14is not a first ballot Hall of Fame head coach.
- 17:17Let that sink in. Yeah. What the heck? How many
- 17:21Super Bowls do you think? Does that raise the
- 17:23bar of how many Super Bowls you need to win before?
- 17:25It's got to because he's six Super Bowls, 302
- 17:29regular season wins. 31 playoff wins. He went
- 17:3331 -13 in the playoffs. We talked a little bit
- 17:37before we got on the show of this, of the writers,
- 17:39the ones who determined a lot of this. The writers
- 17:42are probably the ones who wrote about Spygate
- 17:44and Deflategate and like that. They have more
- 17:48of a vendetta against Bill than anything else.
- 17:52This is them showing by not electing by far the
- 17:58best statistic. Coach Everett. I'm curious to
- 18:02know the writers that didn't vote for it. Our
- 18:06local guy didn't. Who? LaValle. Oh, really? Yeah.
- 18:13He talked about it, and that was one of the things.
- 18:16Save the pettiness for the Major League Baseball
- 18:19Hall of Fame voting, please. There we can go
- 18:22there and your PEDs. Yeah. All right, well, for
- 18:27Roberto, we've got Jacob. Thanks for joining
- 18:30us, buddy. Thanks for having me. Kevin behind
- 18:32the camera and the production aspects. That's
- 18:37right. Follow us on all the internets. I think
- 18:41that's like Apple Podcasts or Applecasts, YouTube,
- 18:44Spotify, Facebook, and there may be some other
- 18:48ones wherever you get your podcasts and listen
- 18:51to our great voices. Others like ours. Exactly.
- 18:55So thanks again until the Super Bowl. We out.
