Latest / Coaches Corner / The Dailey Recap - DePaul 1
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, your team did what they were supposed to do today.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Everybody got involved. And let's start with KK, our first
- 0:07Speaker 1: guest today. Seven points, seven assists, no turnovers. That's a
- 0:11Speaker 1: good way to manage your team.
- 0:13Speaker 2: She was terrific right from the start. Didn't play a
- 0:16Speaker 2: lot of minutes. I think she played fifteen on the
- 0:20Speaker 2: low side for her, but got a lot done in
- 0:23Speaker 2: those fifteen minutes and really set the tone defensively. She
- 0:29Speaker 2: was really good. And then you know she we did
- 0:31Speaker 2: a really good job moving the ball on the offensive end,
- 0:34Speaker 2: and that started with KK.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Talk about the defense. That seems to have been game
- 0:40Speaker 3: after game, doing what you're wanting, putting intensity on the ball,
- 0:44Speaker 3: whether it's straight on or working in computing, communicating as
- 0:48Speaker 3: a team and making the right slide and help.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah, we're just you know, I think we're just trying
- 0:52Speaker 2: to continue to get better every day, working on our pressure,
- 0:56Speaker 2: understanding a little bit more, getting smarter. I mean, I
- 0:58Speaker 2: think that's one thing that that Gino's really stressed with
- 1:03Speaker 2: these guys. Obviously there's physical improvement that you can make
- 1:08Speaker 2: and that we are making, and we're improving in specific areas,
- 1:11Speaker 2: but becoming a smarter team understanding things, seeing angles and
- 1:16Speaker 2: not really having that be determined by the opponent. Obviously today,
- 1:22Speaker 2: you know, DePaul was out matched. So that really isn't
- 1:26Speaker 2: the issue. The issue is how do we play and
- 1:28Speaker 2: how do we approach it and how are we getting better?
- 1:30Speaker 2: And I thought we approached both halves really well.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Chris. Was there a concerted effort to attack the rim
- 1:38Speaker 1: today to get to the free throw line more, especially
- 1:41Speaker 1: in the first half, it seemed that way.
- 1:44Speaker 2: No, not, We've been trying. We've been focusing on it,
- 1:48Speaker 2: just trying to say, you know, I think there was
- 1:50Speaker 2: some kind of stat that we read. We're almost at
- 1:53Speaker 2: the very bottom and the entire nca Division one women's
- 1:56Speaker 2: basketball for a number of free throws attempted per game.
- 2:01Speaker 2: So we've been talking a lot about that and I
- 2:05Speaker 2: don't know if it just the opportunity was there, but
- 2:08Speaker 2: we need to make them. Obviously that was our free
- 2:12Speaker 2: throw shooting percentage was lower than the floor and I
- 2:15Speaker 2: think the three point line at one point. I don't
- 2:17Speaker 2: know what it ended up finishing. And we're a good
- 2:20Speaker 2: shooting team. We're a better free throw shooting team than that,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and so it's disappointing when you miss those those are
- 2:25Speaker 2: easy buckets. You know, nobody's guarding you, and those are
- 2:28Speaker 2: things that you should make. And we do a thing
- 2:30Speaker 2: at practice where you know, we have to make they
- 2:33Speaker 2: each get to shoot ten and we're supposed to make
- 2:36Speaker 2: ninety percent. If we don't make ninety, they have to run.
- 2:38Speaker 2: And the other day we had our highest percentage at
- 2:41Speaker 2: ninety two. I think I'm gonna have to start checking
- 2:43Speaker 2: to make sure that they're actually counting accurately because we
- 2:48Speaker 2: went from ninety two to fifty something. So I'm not
- 2:51Speaker 2: sure how that goes, but I think it's going to
- 2:55Speaker 2: help us again. You know, when you're you're working on
- 2:57Speaker 2: things and trying to get yourself to the free throw
- 2:59Speaker 2: lining because it creates creates issues for the other team
- 3:02Speaker 2: as well.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Well, free throws aside pretty much offensively, it just seemed,
- 3:08Speaker 3: you know, not just the transition baskets that you were
- 3:10Speaker 3: able to that looked pretty you know basketball script, but
- 3:13Speaker 3: just that whether it was around the three when they
- 3:15Speaker 3: did stop the drive, or being able to get inside
- 3:18Speaker 3: with back you know, your post players were getting a
- 3:20Speaker 3: job down low, you know, one on one in the paint,
- 3:22Speaker 3: or your guards driving. It just seemed that if the
- 3:26Speaker 3: first option was taken away, which wasn't often that they
- 3:28Speaker 3: were able to work it through what you wanted the
- 3:31Speaker 3: play to be and be able to score from any facets.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought there was great balance in terms of
- 3:36Speaker 2: what how we what the shut the shots that we
- 3:38Speaker 2: did take. I thought we did a really good job
- 3:41Speaker 2: of finding aasy uh off the two or three passes.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Like I know, there was one down in the first
- 3:46Speaker 2: half where Sarah Williams didn't have anything at the high post.
- 3:49Speaker 2: She passed it to KK, then KK found k Asy.
- 3:53Speaker 2: We just did. I thought we did a really good
- 3:54Speaker 2: job of making good decisions, and that's what makes it
- 3:57Speaker 2: look pretty. You know, it's when you turn the ball
- 3:59Speaker 2: over or every other possession. If you're turning the ball over,
- 4:01Speaker 2: that makes for ugly basketball. But we were getting good
- 4:04Speaker 2: shots and not going.
- 4:05Speaker 1: To mim four straight games either high thirties or forty.
- 4:10Speaker 1: As far as points go from points from the bench,
- 4:13Speaker 1: this is clearly the deepest team that we've had in
- 4:16Speaker 1: a while, the healthiest team that Ukons had in a while.
- 4:18Speaker 1: But to see the production that you're getting from your
- 4:21Speaker 1: bench players, that says a lot. Well.
- 4:23Speaker 2: It certainly helps, you know, I think when you're able
- 4:26Speaker 2: to go to your bench, you you've always we've always
- 4:28Speaker 2: thought this way that when you go to your bench,
- 4:29Speaker 2: you want that the kids that come off the bench
- 4:32Speaker 2: to be able to change the game and to have
- 4:35Speaker 2: an impact on the game in a positive way. And
- 4:37Speaker 2: that doesn't always have to be in scoring. It can
- 4:39Speaker 2: be defensive, pressure, can be rebounding, it can be a
- 4:42Speaker 2: lot of things. But having that kind of production puts
- 4:45Speaker 2: pressure on the other team, and that's you know that
- 4:48Speaker 2: that's also you know, gives us confidence. And let's the
- 4:54Speaker 2: players that start feel good about coming out resting and
- 4:57Speaker 2: then going back in you know, ready to go.
- 5:00Speaker 1: All right, Chris, thank you as always. Uh, we'll see
- 5:03Speaker 1: on the plane Thursday. Get ready for a triple.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I will tell you that when I came out, I thought, oh,
- 5:07Speaker 2: they're already done because I looked at the old spot
- 5:10Speaker 2: he said. I literally Oh. I was like, oh, they
- 5:13Speaker 2: just they didn't need me today. And then I remember,
- 5:15Speaker 2: so you got you got. I finally remembered.
- 5:19Speaker 1: All right, thank you, sir. We'll talk to you Saturday.
