- 0:57It is truly appreciated, and we'll send Am access to our premium sign as
- 1:02we do with all donations of seven dollars or more. Well, we're going
- 1:06to play a somewhat different episode of Yours Truly, Johnny Dowler. This is
- 1:11not the beginning of the Bob Bailey run. Bob Bailey was not the only
- 1:15actor considered for bringing Johnny Dowler back to the air. It was canceled at
- 1:19the end of the nineteen fifty three fifty four radio season. CBS really did
- 1:26want have a adult fifteen minute daily serial mystery, and they tried a couple
- 1:34of programs. By the time that they did air Yours Truly, Johnny Dowler
- 1:40in summer of nineteen fifty four, they tried taking Mister Keene Tracer of Lost
- 1:46Persons, which begin in nineteen thirty seven as a fifteen minute a day serial,
- 1:53and trying to restore it to that format. That didn't last long,
- 1:57and later on that year they also tried it with Mister and Missus North.
- 2:04In addition, they recorded a Jack Moyles audition to bring Rocky Jordan back as
- 2:09a fifteen minute a day program. None of these efforts were successful, but
- 2:20they didn't keep they didn't stop trying, and so in addition to considering Bob
- 2:27Bailey, they also considered Gerald Moore. Radio fans will best remember Gerald Moore
- 2:32in his role as Philip Marlowe, which critics and fans alike absolutely loved from
- 2:38nineteen forty eight to fifty and then returned for a summer replacement run. In
- 2:45nineteen fifty one. Moore had turned to television. He had taken a lead
- 2:50role on the series Foreign Entry, but that had ended at the conclusion of
- 2:55the nineteen fifty four fifty five series. His work would slow down a little
- 3:00bit, and I guess that left open the possibility of doing a radio program.
- 3:05Today's episode is called the trans Pacific matter, and it's based on an
- 3:09Edmund O'Brien's script that was also done by John Lynn and back in nineteen fifty
- 3:15two, CBS had also consider doing a five part serial. What we're going
- 3:20to get is acting for part one and part five of the series. So
- 3:25you're going to miss a little bit of the plot. Nothing's being cut out.
- 3:30It just wasn't recorded. So here now and what might have been Gerald
- 3:35Moore as yours truly Johnny Doller in the Trans Pacific Matter from Hollywood. It's
- 3:40time now for Gerald Moore as Johnny Doll and Jenny. Hi, I've got
- 3:47a case here. You won't like what the commission will be good if we
- 3:51beat it. How big is a policy two thousand dollars? I'm afraid to
- 3:55tell you the risk why? Yeah, let's get me yet, Johnny.
- 4:00The policy hole is of people we've had trouble with before. I'm still not
- 4:04scared. Remember the Trans Pacific Import Export Office? Yeah, I sent flowers
- 4:12to the widow. Yeah, I still want no, but I will good
- 4:17now. Yeah, I'm scared. Tonight and every weekday night, Gerald Moore
- 4:30and the Transcrubed Adventures of the Man with the Action packed expense account America's fabulous
- 4:35freelance insurance investigator. Yeah it's truly Johnny Deller Expense Accounts submitted by special Investigator
- 4:50Johnny Doller, the Home Office Corinthian Liability and Risk Caught for Connecticut. The
- 4:56following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the trans Pacific matter,
- 5:00Adam won Plain fed to Hong Kong over the bobbing head of my rickshaw boy.
- 5:23I found Hong Kong to be a city without simplicity, olver burdened with
- 5:27the tragic complexities of war. The fill the smallest water is a difficult and
- 5:31expensive task, as a shortage of everything food water helped places to live.
- 5:36Both the island itself and the city of Kowloon Over on the mainland were loaded
- 5:41with refugees from the interior, many of them lining the streets wailing prongs as
- 5:46we made our way to the offices of the American Council. Yes, yes,
- 5:58it is true. Life is very difficulty here. Where are they all
- 6:00going? Miss easy for them to go? What do they do? How
- 6:04do they stay alive? Many of them don't, so many of them It
- 6:10is not likely sing indoor America no has it ever been. Well, it
- 6:15was a civil war once. Books say that at times it was pretty bad,
- 6:18but not like this. Never you have, mister Grover, would you
- 6:25ask mister Dollar to step in place? Yes, sir, I got it.
- 6:29Thanks well, Hartford, Connecticut, I come in, mister Dollari,
- 6:36mister Grover, down, sit down, thanks, that's all right. Insurance
- 6:40investigation. Yeah, well, now what's your errand and what can the consulate
- 6:45do for you? And I'm here to investigate acclaim filed by a Trans Pacific
- 6:47Import export company. Oh yes, yes, of course we will Meadows firm.
- 6:51It was destroyed by fire last month, or rather two hundred thousand dollars
- 6:56worth of my company. Do you know this William Meadows? Mister, Oh,
- 7:00I've met him at the American Club now and then that's about all.
- 7:03Insurance investigators are hired when the company isn't satisfied with something about the claim.
- 7:10And this when the fire was blamed on vandalism. Well, vandalism has become
- 7:14quite a popular pastime across in Kowloon, especially. Do you suspect some sort
- 7:18of fraud? Frankly we do. Trance Pacific once had a branch in Shanghai.
- 7:25When the wall closed in on them. Their warehouse was burnt to the
- 7:27ground, just like this one here. Oh, I see occurred to some
- 7:30of the people in my home office. The trans Pacific did much better by
- 7:33collecting on the insurance than if they've gone through the expensive liquidating. I suppose
- 7:39coincidence won't quite do it, will it? Well? Now, how can
- 7:44I help you? I'd appreciate some phone calls and letters. It will give
- 7:47me support from the fire department on the police, Yes, of course you
- 7:51would. I suppose my problem seems very important out here. I was thinking
- 7:58that very thing. You know. It's all always the case, mister Dollar,
- 8:01on the fringe of war, very few individual problems seem really important,
- 8:05nor the individuals themselves. I trust you will keep that in mind. I'll
- 8:09try to getting help, even time from the police or fire brigade is one
- 8:15of those individual problems. But I'll do what I can for you. Anything
- 8:18he'll help us to grow over. I won't take any more of your time.
- 8:22Oh, be sure to leave your number with my girl. I'll let
- 8:24you know about the official assistance. Now. I came right here from the
- 8:28airport. I don't have a number yet. Oh for no hotel no,
- 8:33pretty tough. As a matter of fact, almost impossible. The accidental places
- 8:37are always filled. I tell you speak with my receptionist, miss dress.
- 8:41Is that a name dress? Yes, their fathers have Portuguese into small hotel.
- 8:46He might have accommodations. Good, I'll ask her thanks again? Or
- 8:50miss the dollar just a matter of interest. Yeah, the case of transpecific
- 8:54import in Shanghai. You say your company was forced to meet the claim,
- 9:00that's right? Or was it investigated? The investigator they sent Oval was killed
- 9:05before he could build a case. This vaderous arranged for accommodations that a father's
- 9:13placed on a dingy street called singh Wang, a hill of steps along the
- 9:16waterfront, overshadowed by the plush European mansions on the top of Victoria Peak.
- 9:22I had a room that looked out on an alley, iron bed, a
- 9:26chair, a pitcher of water on a bamboo table. I was the only
- 9:28non Oriental in the building. I seem to be the only one to notice
- 9:33it. First night, I suffered from a combination of claustrophobia and loneliness feelings.
- 9:41It made me glad to find out who it was that knocked my door.
- 9:50Well, Hello, mister Grover asked me to tell you he has contacted
- 9:54a man in Hit and he's it the fire control office. Oh, mister
- 9:58Grover also asked me to tell you that Nick hurt and we'll see you tomorrow
- 10:01morning. Good, won't you come in? Come on in? Thank you?
- 10:07Are you comfortable? Thanks you? This is fine. I don't have
- 10:13much stuff for you. Say all right, Scotch, Miss Vaders. I'm
- 10:18very curious why you are here. Oh that's business, if that's what you
- 10:26mean. But it's better kept confidentially. Is it danger in this business?
- 10:31Why do you ask that? Because you were followed and you are being watched.
- 10:33How do you know I'm not seeing Wall Street. I've seen this man
- 10:37before, but not here. Where is it? Perhaps you can see him
- 10:41from the window you see that shop on the other side, for the back
- 10:43of the piloting the door. Yeah, say you've seen him? Huh where?
- 10:50I cannot remember that. I have just seen him. That It is
- 10:54only to worry. It won't be any trouble. You seem very sure of
- 10:58that. I have the advantage. He doesn't know. I know he's there.
- 11:03Thanks for telling me about him. Perhaps you know who he is?
- 11:07No, I didn't think anybody knew I was in town. You will just
- 11:11let it go on this watch it. That was not much choice. Let's
- 11:18talk about something else. What's that song? A love song about two lonely
- 11:26people who meet near a river in America, the songs are a little different.
- 11:31Yes, I know, I like them. Do you know many Americans?
- 11:35Oh? Yes, they count Let office, I see them all the
- 11:37time. I want to marry. When I'd say it was a very lucky
- 11:43American. No, no, you don't understand. I don't mean there is
- 11:46only one I want to marry, then American who will take me away from
- 11:50vagina? There is no other way. Do they hate it that much?
- 11:54There's nothing else to do but hate it. There's no good here. Always.
- 12:01The Chinese are a patient people, But I am about Chinese, and
- 12:05I cannot make myself be patient any longer. I want to go to America,
- 12:09where people thrive on in patience. Do you know I think from what
- 12:13I have seen that Americans are the most impatient people in all the world.
- 12:18That's right. Let's say we kill ourselves that way, heart and stomach.
- 12:20No, you live longer and in better. What about your Portuguese people?
- 12:26They are gone. You you think I'm wrong to be this way? No,
- 12:35I didn't say that. I hope you find your American most fatress.
- 12:41Sure. Do you want me to go now? I think you're better.
- 12:46I'll see you tomorrow. Yes, good night. Three things interfered with sleep
- 12:58that night, fleeting in the eyes of the girl, the smells and sounds
- 13:03that drifted into my room from the restless, crowded city. The watcher was
- 13:07still at his station across the street when I turned off my life, and
- 13:13the toughest part of his case was a failure in Shanghai, where the agent
- 13:16had been killed. It was a pretty sobering memory, and for that reason,
- 13:22every face in sing Wong Street was a suspicious one, every group of
- 13:26Hong Kong Chinese with potential assessments. With my watcher across the street the first
- 13:31to be reckoned, with gun in hand, eyes on the streets. I
- 13:37fell asleep that night watching him. In the morning, there was a different
- 13:46man in his place. I was followed to the office of Harrison, chief
- 13:50of the fire Brigade, who had developed couldn't see me after all. So
- 13:54with time on my hands, I decided to talk to William Meadows ahead of
- 13:56trans Pacific the firm. I'd come to an that's the game. Oh yes,
- 14:13miss the Meadows at home? Oh yes, sir, you keep name
- 14:16please? Oh malcome gentlemen, my name is Dolla, mist to Meadows and
- 14:20from Corinthian Liability, Hartford office. You call me please? Would you say
- 14:30your name was Dollar? What's the matter with that company anyway? Didn't the
- 14:33adjustice sent in his report? What are you doing? Wait a minute,
- 14:35mister Meadows, this doesn't have to be on ages. In fact, they're
- 14:37in Hartford with nothing to worry about the Sunday's golf game. They don't know
- 14:39a thing about the conditions we're working on there. I like to know your
- 14:43fire here pretty much follows a pattern of the one in Shanghai does. The
- 14:46conditions are the same, including the quote starving refugees unquote who killed and robbed
- 14:52the investigator? Careless people are dying here every day. It can happen pretty
- 14:56easy. I'll say what you have to say and get out of here.
- 15:00That's very little, mister Meadows. That came here mainly to get my reaction
- 15:03to you. I have you jumped to the conclusion you were on a suspicion
- 15:07before I got through that door. You're on the defensive, so you gotta
- 15:11have a reason to be shure. I'm out come. Wait a minute.
- 15:16More important, you're having me followed. You gotta be afraid of me.
- 15:22I am not afraid of your dollar or what you might find or what you
- 15:26might try to do. My warehouse burnt down here, and that dandy little
- 15:30company of yours is going to pay the claim true. I don't like your
- 15:33snooping around. I don't like you coming here like this, and you know
- 15:35it, no man would. And that's the biggest parcel of information you will
- 15:41get from me, and I'll go elsewhere. Good idea. Have your dreams,
- 15:48dollar, but have them someplace else. Go snoop through the ashes.
- 15:52Mainly, just get out of here the door. Two things came out of
- 16:02that conversation with William Meadows. First, or reasonable platform to build a strong
- 16:07suspicion on. Second, what Meadows was really saying was this is my town,
- 16:11and I run things, and anybody who gets in my awake and get
- 16:12hurt. A real nice situation. I'd been threatened and I was being followed.
- 16:23Spencer count item two seven dollars for a bottle of scotch I Rick showed
- 16:29back to my hotel, locked myself in and took up my vigil by the
- 16:32window. Yeah, same man watching him across the street. Same kind of
- 16:41nights in a city where life was supposedly so cheap, mine began to grow
- 16:47expensive. Now here is our star, Gerald Moore will tell you about tomorrow's
- 17:07episode. Thanks Tomorrow night, a complicated lesson in how to get shot at
- 17:11by your best friend and like it. Join us, won't you Yours Truly

- 18:26Yeah, I got a burden. My room was ready to sing sing
- 18:29are you holding some one prisoner? I just kept that two bit thugged that
- 18:30William Meadows head on me. The next one on my list is Meadows himself.
- 18:34I warned you a dollar. Any illegal action will be answer here Headquarters
- 18:38does that work all the way around. Send out a wagon and pick this
- 18:41baby up. He was carrying a knife and a gun when I bought to
- 18:45me. Try to kill me all right with the dollar, I'll come at
- 18:48once to night and every weeknight. Gerald Moore in the French dribed Adventure of
- 19:00the Man with the Action Facts. Expense account America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator.
- 19:04Yeah it's truly Johnny Dollar, fifth day in Hong Kong Expense Accounts submitted by
- 19:18Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, the Home Office Corinthian Liability and Risk Card for Connecticut.
- 19:23Following is an account of additional expenses during my investigation of the Trance Pacific
- 19:27arson case. And it is awesome, I'm sure of it. Adam fourteen
- 19:33seven dollars wreckage, wreckage of bamboo curtains in my hotel room during scuffle with
- 19:37thug Wood and murder in his eye. That's self looking oriental in a suit
- 19:41that was too big in the shoulders. Not so tough without his killing equipment.
- 19:51Fat funny, We got business, Okay, who sent you meadows?
- 20:03That's better. Let's have the rest of it, including burning down a warehouse
- 20:06to collect it. Just one moment. What's going on here? I'm trying
- 20:10to find out, mister Clyde. That's enough, Wilson, take mister Dollar's
- 20:12gone, not mine his. I took it from him, nevertheless. All
- 20:17right here, Well this is the man you apprehend him Penloo. You know
- 20:22I've seen him. You know his name, and I know he works for
- 20:26Meadows and he's been following me and tried to kill me. It ought to
- 20:29be enough for you to go to work on one thing at the time.
- 20:30Mister Dollon, are you sure this man is in the employer of William Meadows?
- 20:34He just told me and Durst sure. I'd arrest him, arrest anybody
- 20:40with that kind of equipment, wouldn't you? Now, calm Donald Boyn.
- 20:42A warehouse is burned to the ground, a girl is killed as an attempt
- 20:45at murder, and you say calm down. I repeated, calm down.
- 20:49All right, man, you're taking the headquarters. Let's see what he has
- 20:52to say about all this. Why don't we say right here? Then if
- 20:55you can throw any light on the matter, we'll proceed further. I don't
- 21:00get you the department and I have stood for all of the badgering we were
- 21:03from you, mister Dollon, You're a case of us and against William Meadows.
- 21:07Consists of nothing but notorized statements from people who could have said almost anything.
- 21:12Their accusations with regard to the murder that poor girl to bear consideration,
- 21:17But they are also very inconclusive, and you haven't done anything about it either.
- 21:22We do things our way, mister Dollon, in spite of your insurance
- 21:25compan what about him at that Penn Lou Well, he'll be questioned most thoroughly.
- 21:29Then we shall proceed h PLoP the whole matter really well, I'm proceeding
- 21:33right now. Yes, I heard you on the phone who said you are
- 21:34going to get the Meadow. I'm going to get a confession from him.
- 21:37Mister Dallan. I checked on you as an investigator quite thoroughly. Thank you.
- 21:42You have a reputation in your United States, an enviable one. I
- 21:47can't disregard that. But I cannot disregard either the fact that this case is
- 21:51very complex and must be investigated cautiously. We'll question this man in our way
- 21:56and for our reasons. Then I'll let you know the results or what about
- 21:59my case that would come out eventually? I didn't have to call you,
- 22:03but I did because I thought at least you'd be convinced. Now's the time
- 22:06to get meadows and help me. I can see I was wrong. Wait
- 22:08one moment, Where are you going out, mister dollar? I have no
- 22:14reason to arrest you right now, I'm but I will if you do anything
- 22:18out of line, I will be contacting you, and I suggest that you
- 22:22wait here. I didn't wait. Expense account item fifteen forty eight dollars American
- 22:32for rental in nineteen thirty five. Packet I got tired of rickshaws, had
- 22:41a hard time driving through the Hong Kong streets. Anybody would It was still
- 22:45jammed with humanity, humanity on the verge of panic, humanity living on the
- 22:49edge of a war. I'll say this for the old packet LAHRN worked beautifully,
- 22:56hardly anybody paid any attention to it. It took me a solid out
- 23:00to get to the south part of town. When meadows lap meadows heados opening
- 23:22up? Somebody opening up, I'll shut the lock off. Who open this
- 23:26door? Hurry it up? Wa? Wait, oh, hollow? Miss?
- 23:37Why's meadows? Miss some meadows? He not here? You come back
- 23:41down? Please? Please wait? Wait, Miss middles are not here.
- 23:45I can't you, mister Middle he not here? Us Meadows mhm not here.
- 23:55You come back? He said come back next week. You come back
- 23:59think week. He's sealed in. No, you go for him. You
- 24:02know where he is? Tell me you come back next week. I listen.
- 24:04I don't want to hurt you. Do you understand? No? No,
- 24:07not what? But I will hurt ploody if I don't find out where
- 24:11he is. It's important not tell me where is he he? Anybody tell
- 24:18me? Oh he got colon colon? Yes, you'll find him there and
- 24:29you go with me. And if he's not there, then I hurt.
- 24:33Oh, I'll try again. Where is he hold? I'll tell you repulsibly
- 24:45what you say, repulse b that's on the other side of the island where
- 24:51the big hotel is. Yes, yes, he can. I call him
- 24:55on the telephone. Yes, you're cool. Is he at the hotel?
- 24:59He go to college? No? Moost seven? Last one? Where's the
- 25:03telephone? You're not telling how you learned? Hi? There? Prise?
- 25:07Where is that telephone? Here? Tell forth all the number. I'll talk
- 25:17now, go ahead, mister Meadow college you prease one moment, Okay,
- 25:33give it me. Oh, oh, hello, you see I tell truth?
- 25:44Hi there they're fine. You go see yeah, no no, no,
- 25:48no, tell no tell. But it won't make any difference now,
- 25:55not on a stands dollar you will. The old packet got me there in
- 26:02forty minutes. I was already in front of the Cottage seven when the police
- 26:06cars slid to a quiet stop. Superintendent Clyde spotted me just a moment on.
- 26:15We came here not because of what you was said, but to see
- 26:18to it if nothing happens, it might better be prevented. Thank you.
- 26:22You tentified that house boy of Meadows. He called us and said that truth
- 26:25been there. You are hot headed in pitch with now this time you happen
- 26:30to be right about pen Lou. Huh. Pen Lou admitted that he'd been
- 26:33hired by Meadows to kill him. We took time to check his gun,
- 26:37although he didn't admit that part. It's the same gun that killed Louisa.
- 26:40Badres Louisa. But it isn't clear why would Meadows have her killed? I
- 26:45want to see they killed her thinking it was me what h Louisa and I
- 26:49got to know each other pretty well during the first days I was here.
- 26:52There's been a bad job for the nerves, what with the murder of the
- 26:56man who investigated Meadows in Shanghai. And she got me a room at her
- 27:00father's had tell she was there when I came back after a pretty bad day.
- 27:04I knew somebody was following me, and I guess I needed somebody to
- 27:08be with me, so she stayed awhile she was there the next night waiting
- 27:12for me in the room, and she was waiting for me to come back
- 27:17the night she was killed. No, no, that answers me. And
- 27:22this is for my own information. I'm not police with Are you here to
- 27:26get Meadows for your company or because of Louisian? She was a lovely girl,
- 27:33all right. He's a difficult Manne what you can Why your turn,
- 27:37Dolla? You waited a long time, Boughton, make your play. Try
- 27:41to clear up what you have to for the insurance company. It'll be difficult
- 27:44to have to. We've arrested him. Good luck, Thanks dollar, oh
- 27:52Dler. You know I'm still alive. Meadows. You know that girl was
- 27:56shot at the hotel room instead of me? Are you crazy? I stopped
- 28:00the man you had following me. A statement will put you in plenty of
- 28:03hot water. How are you coming down? Shall I come in? Come
- 28:08on in, we'll talk about it all right. I'm coming in, okay,
- 28:21Bhows, come on down, Meadows. I told you you shouldn't have
- 28:42known. You wouldn't take me. Oh I hit you didn't just the arm.
- 28:49It'll be all right. Should have been your stomach cashing in, Meadows.
- 28:55How about it a statement? No salad, Meadows? How you fired
- 28:59the warehouse and about a girl. I can't hurt you now? Oh,
- 29:03tell nothing, Meadows. You should have should have got you, all right,
- 29:15Darlanlet I have that arm taken care of Spencer. Count at him sixteen
- 29:26forty three dollars even medical fees and hospital charges. And I suppose it could
- 29:32be called hewing with the niceties of jurisprudence. Since Meadows was dead and he
- 29:37refused before dying to speak or write his confession. But there were two police
