Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The rex was not chasing the jeep. Murray, Murray, you there.
- 0:09Speaker 1: You love sandwiches. Huh, Let's go to eighty.
- 0:13Speaker 3: It was bo.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Wow that Prime Time. Maybe I had a crush on
- 0:18Speaker 1: Betty Rubbell.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 2: to a commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman
- 0:25Speaker 2: was black.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 1: the game. You're listening to to Goatson Company.
- 0:32Speaker 2: It is to Gotts and Company, presented by FanDuel and
- 0:34Speaker 2: the Fanduels Sports book Tailor is off today.
- 0:37Speaker 3: The entire day. He is off.
- 0:38Speaker 1: He is out of parade.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Tony Hawk is going to join us though, coming up
- 0:42Speaker 2: at about fifteen minutes or so. We'll see, but Tony
- 0:45Speaker 2: Hawk is going to join us on site to talk
- 0:47Speaker 2: to Tony Hawk. I love Tony Hawk. Is a You love
- 0:50Speaker 2: Tony Hawk. You're not a skateboarder.
- 0:52Speaker 1: But I am amazed at young people.
- 0:53Speaker 2: When I told my kids that Tony Hawk was coming
- 0:56Speaker 2: on the show, they were excited, and I'm like, what, yeah,
- 1:00Speaker 2: video games.
- 1:01Speaker 4: He's older than me, and yet I remember him being
- 1:03Speaker 4: the cool guy when I was a kid, and yet
- 1:06Speaker 4: he's now in his fifties and he's still the flipping
- 1:09Speaker 4: cool guy, and it just ticks me off everybody that
- 1:12Speaker 4: I like, Wow, you're talking to Tony Hawk.
- 1:14Speaker 3: That's a big deal.
- 1:14Speaker 4: I'm like, was it?
- 1:15Speaker 3: Is it a big deal? Was it a big deal
- 1:17Speaker 3: thirty years ago? No, it's still a huge deal.
- 1:19Speaker 4: And yeah, that part annoys me.
- 1:21Speaker 5: I was just gonna ask you said Tony Hawk was
- 1:23Speaker 5: the cool guy, and I'm wondering at what point he.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Stopped being the cool guy, because yes, never still is.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, No, I think at the beginning he
- 1:31Speaker 1: was a dork.
- 1:33Speaker 5: Well, no, the perception was he was a Yes, I
- 1:37Speaker 5: don't think he was right, but it was a dork
- 1:39Speaker 5: within the cool skating community.
- 1:41Speaker 4: So it's like there's levels to the dorkiness. You mentioned
- 1:44Speaker 4: that Taylor was off today. He should be on one,
- 1:47Speaker 4: not off, because he is at this parade right like
- 1:50Speaker 4: this is the peak of his fandom.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yes, they're reporting, by the way, I'm watching the parade
- 1:55Speaker 2: on television right now looking for Taylor.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I haven't seen him yet, but they are.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Reporting that more people will be in New York City
- 2:02Speaker 2: for this parade than there.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Are a New Year's Eve.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I mean, this is insane, what is going on? And yes,
- 2:09Speaker 2: Taylor is off, he's in the parade.
- 2:11Speaker 6: I have.
- 2:13Speaker 1: No desire.
- 2:14Speaker 2: As excited as I am that the Knicks have finally
- 2:17Speaker 2: won an NBA championship, and as someone who has been
- 2:20Speaker 2: in not one but two Miami Heat Championship parades on
- 2:23Speaker 2: a float, that's right, I will tell you that I
- 2:26Speaker 2: have no desire to actually attend a parade.
- 2:29Speaker 5: You know, I will tell you just mentioned two things
- 2:33Speaker 5: back to back that are on the list for me.
- 2:37Speaker 5: Of sound likely it would be a good idea, But
- 2:40Speaker 5: aren't parades and New Year's Even Manhattan both of those things.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Everybody says, oh, yeah, you gotta wait till you see
- 2:47Speaker 5: the New Year's Even Manhattan.
- 2:48Speaker 3: It's awful. I have zero desire for that.
- 2:52Speaker 4: I had this debate or long standing argument with Sarah
- 2:55Speaker 4: Spain when he used to do a radio show together.
- 2:57Speaker 4: She loves parades because it's any excuse to have fun,
- 3:00Speaker 4: and I'm like, I'm fine for an excuse to have fun.
- 3:03Speaker 4: A parade is not one of them. A bunch of
- 3:05Speaker 4: people I don't know who probably smell bad. And then
- 3:08Speaker 4: imagine in the New York City parade, I imagine there's
- 3:10Speaker 4: a whole corner of rats just feeling like entitled to
- 3:14Speaker 4: just hey, let's party. All these people are out here,
- 3:16Speaker 4: like it's got to be so disgusting and stu. I
- 3:20Speaker 4: saw something that's just absolute nightmare fuel for me. There
- 3:24Speaker 4: are people penned up inside of a subway, waiting on
- 3:28Speaker 4: the stairs more than half an hour to get out
- 3:32Speaker 4: because they can't open those doors yet.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Wait a second, what they're trying to get to the
- 3:36Speaker 2: parade or just trying to get to.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Work, trying to get to sunlight because they're underground and
- 3:42Speaker 4: they're all almost all of them are a nixt gear
- 3:44Speaker 4: and they're just standing there. It's like being stuck in
- 3:47Speaker 4: the world's largest elevator. And it would just absolutely send
- 3:51Speaker 4: me to all levels of claustrophobia.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Okay, so are we smearing all parades here? That is awful.
- 3:57Speaker 2: By the way, there was no place I would less
- 4:00Speaker 2: want to be stuck than in a subway, and you're terrible.
- 4:03Speaker 4: That's absolutely terrible. And I don't hate all parades. One
- 4:06Speaker 4: time I was in a city, I want to say
- 4:08Speaker 4: in Iowa, and there was a really small parade right
- 4:11Speaker 4: behind my hotel. I went and took part, took five minutes.
- 4:15Speaker 4: It was amazing. Little short parades are fine.
- 4:18Speaker 3: That's not a parade. A little short parade is not
- 4:20Speaker 3: a parade. It's a walk. And those are fine, but
- 4:23Speaker 3: that's not a parade.
- 4:24Speaker 2: All right, put it on the pole, mikey, A is
- 4:26Speaker 2: a short parade, a parade or a walk?
- 4:29Speaker 4: Well, it's like is a pony a horse? Because if
- 4:32Speaker 4: a pony is a horse, then a short parade is
- 4:34Speaker 4: a parade. Like it's just a cuter parade.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Now I am with Izzy.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I am all for a parade down Main Street to
- 4:41Speaker 2: celebrate the youth football league.
- 4:43Speaker 1: It has to be around the kids, though, yeah yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, but once you've got too many people, like look,
- 4:49Speaker 4: I was there as a reporter in two thousand and six,
- 4:52Speaker 4: twenty and twelve, and twenty thirteen for the Miami Heat parades.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Miserable experiences. Miser absolutely hated. It got back to the
- 5:00Speaker 4: media room and even Ira Winderman smelled, and it was
- 5:02Speaker 4: just like, all right, we got to stop these parade.
- 5:04Speaker 3: You're not good. Why does he never smell?
- 5:07Speaker 4: I mean, it doesn't seem like a guy who sweats
- 5:09Speaker 4: very often, so this is gonna sound terrible, but I
- 5:12Speaker 4: was on a float.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I was I was actually on the parade route, I believe.
- 5:16Speaker 2: One year with Lebron James, another year with Mike Miller,
- 5:20Speaker 2: and I was miserable.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Both the ears are just the Mike Miller year.
- 5:25Speaker 2: If the buses were crowded, just the Mike Miller year. Yes,
- 5:28Speaker 2: down grade the Lebron here was amazing.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I bet.
- 5:32Speaker 2: This is what it's like. The parade could have gone
- 5:34Speaker 2: on for years. It was still going on. I'd be fine,
- 5:37Speaker 2: was hanging out with Lebron?
- 5:39Speaker 3: What else?
- 5:40Speaker 4: What else is something that sounds good theory that is
- 5:44Speaker 4: terrible an execution.
- 5:46Speaker 2: So mikey A, we glossed over this because I do
- 5:48Speaker 2: this all the time. It's a device in the podcasting
- 5:51Speaker 2: and radio. Oh I got a list. I don't actually
- 5:54Speaker 2: have a list. I just want to make it sound better.
- 5:56Speaker 2: My argument. Mikey A actually said he has a list
- 5:59Speaker 2: of places where it sounds good in theory until you
- 6:02Speaker 2: get there.
- 6:03Speaker 1: And so I am questioning whether or not.
- 6:05Speaker 2: He actually has a list or he just has the
- 6:07Speaker 2: two that I blurted out to start the show.
- 6:10Speaker 4: No, here's one day base by the way, Sorry day
- 6:14Speaker 4: baseball game is number one.
- 6:16Speaker 3: I'm sorry to interrupt.
- 6:17Speaker 4: If you hear a blender in the background, it's suddenly
- 6:19Speaker 4: because my partner is a vlogger, all of a sudden,
- 6:22Speaker 4: and everything in our apartment is is available for the
- 6:25Speaker 4: world to see. Jesus Christ, I'm sorry.
- 6:28Speaker 2: What is he cooking up for the for his first
- 6:31Speaker 2: followers today?
- 6:32Speaker 4: Well, he's trying to get abs and so tell I
- 6:38Speaker 4: heard blender in the background.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I'll tell me to get an AB roller. It's a
- 6:44Speaker 3: lot more quiet, isn't it.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I am such a sucker for an AB roller.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Really are those AB devices? You'll just buy them?
- 6:55Speaker 2: The one the belt that you just put around your
- 6:57Speaker 2: you turn it on. It's like, I don't know what
- 6:59Speaker 2: it has.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Just get away.
- 7:02Speaker 2: It just shakes your belly while you're watching football and
- 7:04Speaker 2: you lose fifteen pounds.
- 7:07Speaker 4: It's called the Santa Claus ad machine.
- 7:12Speaker 1: All right, let's get back to Mike.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Oood, listen, abroller sounds terrible and is terrible. Now, let's
- 7:17Speaker 4: get back to Mike. That is sound good, but not terrible.
- 7:21Speaker 4: It looks delightful. It is delightful.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Oh god.
- 7:24Speaker 5: So yeah, day baseball games, those one o'clock starts in
- 7:29Speaker 5: the middle of the summer.
- 7:30Speaker 3: They're awful. They're awful.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Can I just say this, you're talking about the heat
- 7:34Speaker 2: humidity right, because day baseball games one o'clock you could
- 7:37Speaker 2: sit wherever the hell you want.
- 7:38Speaker 5: I mean, what do you at home where it's air conditioned?
- 7:42Speaker 5: And I you know, I didn't spend thirty five dollars
- 7:45Speaker 5: on a beer.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I mean, if you go to a Marlin's one o'clock game,
- 7:49Speaker 2: as he knows this, you have your pick of seats.
- 7:51Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying.
- 7:52Speaker 4: You know, No, I don't know that. I have not
- 7:54Speaker 4: seen a game in that new stadium since it opened.
- 7:57Speaker 4: I've been a couple of times. Both times I had
- 7:59Speaker 4: to leave for the first inning ended. The second time
- 8:02Speaker 4: actually was just there for the national anthem because my
- 8:04Speaker 4: niece was in a group singing it. Have not been there.
- 8:06Speaker 4: The last time I was at a day game, Stugatz
- 8:09Speaker 4: was in Wrigly and it was okay. It was okay.
- 8:12Speaker 3: It's a little overrated.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Yes, Speaking of Wrigly, my daughter had the honor last night,
- 8:17Speaker 2: her and two of her teammates of leading the crowd
- 8:20Speaker 2: in the seventh inning stretch. It was such a great,
- 8:23Speaker 2: great night for me. Yeah, that's incredible.
- 8:25Speaker 3: You were there.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I was there.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't ask you to take part. No, the
- 8:29Speaker 2: girls didn't want me to take party. You know, they
- 8:31Speaker 2: have to sign a Cub's hat. They throw it out
- 8:33Speaker 2: to a lucky fan who catches it. I said, hey,
- 8:35Speaker 2: you guys want me to sign that hat and they
- 8:37Speaker 2: all looked at me. The three girls are like why,
- 8:40Speaker 2: and I'm like, so the hat has increased value?
- 8:43Speaker 3: What did that do for your ego? When they said no, no,
- 8:47Speaker 3: they laughed at me.
- 8:50Speaker 2: So they walked into uh to Boog's office where he
- 8:53Speaker 2: does play by play for the Cub. Boog wasn't there
- 8:55Speaker 2: last night. He does one hundred and ten games a year.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I texted him. He said, got the night off? He said,
- 9:00Speaker 2: have fun. I'll send you a video. I responded, slacker,
- 9:05Speaker 2: what a.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Night to take off.
- 9:07Speaker 4: But yes, your daughter's bigger in Chicago than you ares.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Dude, Oh no doubt.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Is that not fair? Yeah?
- 9:11Speaker 1: Very fair, very fair.
- 9:12Speaker 2: But I'm trying to explain to them they didn't know
- 9:15Speaker 2: all the words to take me out to the ballgame,
- 9:17Speaker 2: which to me, I was outraged.
- 9:19Speaker 1: It's like our national anthem, so.
- 9:21Speaker 3: They didn't know the words.
- 9:22Speaker 2: They had to rehearse it a couple of times, but
- 9:24Speaker 2: they went up there and I was trying to explain
- 9:26Speaker 2: what it is that they're doing. I'm like, this is
- 9:29Speaker 2: reserved for people like Bill Murray and Eddie Vedder, That's
- 9:32Speaker 2: who do like. But they're national champions and they're a
- 9:35Speaker 2: big deal in Chicago and they got a nice standing ovation.
- 9:38Speaker 3: It was fun not for their singing for the La
- 9:43Speaker 3: crosse play.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Yes, congratulations on the championship.
- 9:47Speaker 1: What else do you have, Mike?
- 9:49Speaker 5: Uh?
- 9:49Speaker 3: Picnics? Oh?
- 9:51Speaker 1: Yeah, great one.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Oh do you.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Know why that's such a good call, Because I don't
- 9:55Speaker 4: think I've ever actually really been on a picnic. Like
- 9:57Speaker 4: I never said to myself, Hey, gather the the food,
- 10:00Speaker 4: put it in a basket, let's go eat outside. Unless
- 10:03Speaker 4: it's like a beach day.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no Now.
- 10:06Speaker 2: It sounds delightful until you get there, right in theory,
- 10:09Speaker 2: right in your mind. It sounds great in a little sheet,
- 10:12Speaker 2: We're gonna have some, you know, nice lunch. We're going
- 10:14Speaker 2: to get some good sandwiches, until you realize you're sitting
- 10:16Speaker 2: next to a pile of dog shit and there's flies
- 10:18Speaker 2: all over your food and you have to have like
- 10:20Speaker 2: a bag with a cooler in it.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Otherwise some things are gonna just get an uncomfortable temperature.
- 10:24Speaker 7: It's just eat inside people. Everything in normal temperature. Everything
- 10:29Speaker 7: that's the same temperature. And it's not a it's not
- 10:31Speaker 7: a good temperature. It's too cold for the hot food.
- 10:34Speaker 7: It's too hot for the cold food. Yeah, picnics, they're awful.
- 10:37Speaker 7: They sound they're awful.
- 10:40Speaker 2: It takes the sting out of your sandwich. It makes
- 10:42Speaker 2: your cold warmer. It's terrible.
- 10:44Speaker 5: It's a bad idea. There you go, don't do it.
- 10:47Speaker 5: I learned this one yesterday. I officially gave it the
- 10:50Speaker 5: stamp yesterday. Aquariums awful.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Awful, Okay, he likes aquariums.
- 10:57Speaker 4: No, it doesn't sound good at all. It doesn't sound good.
- 11:00Speaker 4: It's not a good experience.
- 11:01Speaker 2: It smells like if someone says, hey, let's go spend
- 11:04Speaker 2: the nice day at the aquarium, you're out.
- 11:06Speaker 1: You're terrible.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Yeah, unless like if I'm having I mean I used
- 11:11Speaker 4: to have these. If I'm having like a bad hair day,
- 11:13Speaker 4: or I just don't want people to see me, yeah,
- 11:14Speaker 4: I'll go to a dark place or something like that.
- 11:16Speaker 4: But that doesn't happen. Look at me, fishy. Yeah, I'm
- 11:23Speaker 4: not a fan of aquarium. That's good on the list Packed.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Bars, Jesus.
- 11:29Speaker 2: So wait, hold on a second, So, so what at
- 11:32Speaker 2: what point in your life does a pack bar seem
- 11:35Speaker 2: like a good idea in theory when you're in college,
- 11:37Speaker 2: I guess my twenties.
- 11:39Speaker 5: My twenties, my college and twenties, I was like, Oh,
- 11:43Speaker 5: everybody's going to this bar, let's go.
- 11:45Speaker 3: And then you get in there and it's like this
- 11:47Speaker 3: is awful, right.
- 11:48Speaker 2: But now, if you tell me I'm going to a
- 11:50Speaker 2: pack bar, I'm like, yeah, I don't want to. If
- 11:53Speaker 2: you tell me I'm going to an empty bar and dive,
- 11:55Speaker 2: I'm in you know, yeah, I lovely.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Yeah, just give me a good bartender. Oh my goodness,
- 12:00Speaker 4: give me a jukebox that I can control, and like
- 12:03Speaker 4: five or six other people in there so I can
- 12:05Speaker 4: see their reaction when the song comes on.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Did they like it?
- 12:07Speaker 6: Oh?
- 12:08Speaker 1: Yeah, they like to give me another drake? Five or
- 12:09Speaker 1: six people spread out like every third.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Seat, yes, yes, maybe a pool table or a dartboard
- 12:15Speaker 4: in there. Doesn't have to be both one or the other.
- 12:18Speaker 5: My buddy, there's the app where you can control the jukebox.
- 12:22Speaker 3: You pay like monthly for it.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Well, he found out that I was going to a
- 12:26Speaker 5: bar and he put the same like two songs on repeat.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Yeah, we're not for that place. What a move? Yeah
- 12:34Speaker 3: it was, and he just and it.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Was a while before You're like, why do they keep
- 12:37Speaker 5: playing the macarena?
- 12:39Speaker 3: And then he just texts me, are you doing it yet? Yeah?
- 12:43Speaker 3: I was like because he wasn't with us, I was.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Like, you have a bitch, I love to play on
- 12:48Speaker 4: my way out of a pool bar. That is just
- 12:51Speaker 4: a bunch of dudes in there playing pool, most of
- 12:53Speaker 4: them bringing their own stick. Six consecutive. Lady Gaga was
- 13:00Speaker 4: the other one. It might cost me fifteen dollars that
- 13:02Speaker 4: I'll never actually experience, but.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Damn it in my mind amazing.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Yes, But the thought as you're driving home of those
- 13:07Speaker 2: six people poolblayers, men who are smoking listening.
- 13:13Speaker 1: To Lady Gaga is enough for you.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Creesmoking don't look good, they're actually smoking cigarette.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Yes, I don't know how we got here, but Buggy,
- 13:22Speaker 2: you have more.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Of course I have more. Uh this might be an
- 13:26Speaker 5: East Coast thing. Uh, beaches north of Georgia. They're terrible.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Really, I can't say I can relate. What's wrong with
- 13:34Speaker 4: them up there.
- 13:34Speaker 5: Well, there's not beaches, They're sure there. There's shoreline, there's
- 13:39Speaker 5: a different there's no the water is ice.
- 13:42Speaker 1: There's no beach that leads to the ocean. Is what
- 13:43Speaker 1: you're saying.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I would say Newport Beach is nice, and Rhode Island
- 13:46Speaker 2: I would tell you that.
- 13:47Speaker 5: No, I would tell you that it's a nice shore
- 13:49Speaker 5: It's exactly, it's not nice.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Put it on the pole.
- 13:54Speaker 1: If your beach has gravel, is it a beach?
- 13:56Speaker 3: No, it was a shoreline.
- 13:58Speaker 4: I was on a cruise with my family not too
- 14:01Speaker 4: long ago, and my niece had an amazing experience because
- 14:04Speaker 4: she every time she runs into somebody with an accent
- 14:06Speaker 4: and she's like wow. And then she ran into somebody
- 14:09Speaker 4: with a British accent and they said, do you have
- 14:11Speaker 4: beaches have rocks or sand on them? And she was
- 14:14Speaker 4: just like wow, she was so enamored by the accent.
- 14:17Speaker 4: I don't think she answered the question, but it's just like,
- 14:19Speaker 4: what's just like rocks on the beach?
- 14:21Speaker 3: What are you talking about?
- 14:22Speaker 4: And she's like, yeah, there's sand on our beaches and
- 14:24Speaker 4: she's like no, we have rocks in ours. And it's like, oh,
- 14:26Speaker 4: that sucks.
- 14:27Speaker 3: That's terrible, So it's.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Kind of like what you're talking about, Mike, all right, I.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Like it all right. Last two maybe a little controversial,
- 14:34Speaker 3: maybe just me.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Hikes terrible.
- 14:39Speaker 4: Awful, well Marcus Aldridg's levels of awful terrible.
- 14:43Speaker 6: No.
- 14:43Speaker 1: I like hikes. I like hike.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I figured as.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Long as everybody we're with can physically do everything necessary.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Because we were on a hike in San Diego and
- 14:53Speaker 4: I had my niece with me, who was twenty years
- 14:55Speaker 4: old at the time, and I was like, ooh, this
- 14:57Speaker 4: might be a little sketchy for you, and it made
- 14:58Speaker 4: me nervous every step of the way. But outside of that,
- 15:00Speaker 4: love hikes.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Is this a hike, like an actual I'm putting on
- 15:03Speaker 2: boots and I'm hiking or just hike hike?
- 15:07Speaker 3: Oh my hot all right. Last one on my list cruises.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Oh I'm so with you on this sounds so good
- 15:18Speaker 2: and well, it depends on it depends on the cruise.
- 15:22Speaker 2: When the kids were younger and you know, we decided
- 15:25Speaker 2: to go on a cruise, it sounded fantastic until I
- 15:28Speaker 2: got in the cruise.
- 15:30Speaker 4: I've only been on one, two, three, I think three cruises,
- 15:33Speaker 4: maybe four. Two of them were adults only love that
- 15:38Speaker 4: love that those are way better than the non adults
- 15:41Speaker 4: only one. There was one with my family, and you know,
- 15:44Speaker 4: obviously a regular old family cruise line where we were
- 15:48Speaker 4: basically following a hurricane, right, so we weren't actually in
- 15:51Speaker 4: the hurricane. It was just the back end of it
- 15:53Speaker 4: and the entire time, and there's people vomiting everywhere. That's
- 15:57Speaker 4: just like, and this is the first cruise for like
- 16:00Speaker 4: half of my family, and I was just like, oh no,
- 16:02Speaker 4: they're gonna.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Hate They're gonna hate this.
- 16:04Speaker 4: But they all survived at the back end of the
- 16:06Speaker 4: cruise was great. Now they want to go in another one.
- 16:08Speaker 4: So I was like, Aha, you gotta go through the
- 16:09Speaker 4: terrible times before you get to the good ones. But yeah,
- 16:12Speaker 4: that's that's one of those where a lot of people
- 16:14Speaker 4: can't stand the cruises, especially now that you got the
- 16:16Speaker 4: poop cruise Duck and you had the other one with
- 16:18Speaker 4: the virus in Spain. It's like, I get me off
- 16:20Speaker 4: this thing.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Whenever we got to ports, I would stay on the boat, yeah,
- 16:24Speaker 2: because you have the whole boat to yourself.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Finally, Yeah, what my favorite is when you get off
- 16:31Speaker 4: on a stop like I did this one cruise in
- 16:33Speaker 4: Europe where you get off on a stop and the
- 16:34Speaker 4: people have no idea what to expect. We got to
- 16:37Speaker 4: Santorini and there's just like eighty year old women climbing
- 16:41Speaker 4: these steps for two miles and they look like they're dying,
- 16:43Speaker 4: and they're like poop all in their shoes and they stink,
- 16:46Speaker 4: and I was just like, you guys didn't know this
- 16:47Speaker 4: was coming, did you?
- 16:52Speaker 3: Is that it? My key? Is that all you have?
- 16:53Speaker 3: I would nominate.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I would say the Super Bowl. It's kind of like
- 16:59Speaker 1: a pack bar.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I don't hate it.
- 17:03Speaker 5: I watch every football game all year, and then I
- 17:06Speaker 5: get put in a room with somebody who's like, why
- 17:09Speaker 5: is that a penalty? And I'm like no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 17:11Speaker 5: no no no no, I'm not explaining the game to you.
- 17:14Speaker 3: You can't be Johnny Come Lately. No no, no, no, no,
- 17:16Speaker 3: we're not.
- 17:17Speaker 4: Mikey is saying, that's the actual super Bowl. Even watching
- 17:19Speaker 4: the Super Bowl as an overrated experience because the Johnny
- 17:23Speaker 4: Come Lately they're asking you all these questions, why are
- 17:25Speaker 4: the flags?
- 17:26Speaker 3: Yell? Yes, you watch commercial, Yet.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Every Sunday you're watching it without interruption, with no questions
- 17:33Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden, there's just one Sunday
- 17:35Speaker 2: where everyone wants to be a part of your.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Sunday and they ruin it. I'm with them on that.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Plus, there's a sadness that comes with the Super Bowl.
- 17:42Speaker 2: There's no more football after the game, you.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Know, kind of how I feel now with no more basketball,
- 17:48Speaker 4: very sad. I feel like I have to learn something
- 17:50Speaker 4: this summer because usually I avoid sports in the summer
- 17:52Speaker 4: and take as many vacation days as possible. But this year,
- 17:55Speaker 4: I feel like I got to consume more sports.
- 17:57Speaker 2: All right, let's learn about skateboarding with the greatest to
- 18:00Speaker 2: ever do it, Tony Hawk.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Next.
- 18:13Speaker 3: We're very excited about this.
- 18:15Speaker 2: He was a world champion twelve years in a row
- 18:17Speaker 2: and is a sixteen time X Games medalist. Joining us
- 18:21Speaker 2: now with skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. Tony, how are you.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Today, good man?
- 18:26Speaker 6: Thank you? Thanks for having me.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Tell us what you're doing with visit Anaheim? What are
- 18:30Speaker 1: you doing there?
- 18:31Speaker 8: I partner up with Anaheim to talk about nostalgis travel
- 18:35Speaker 8: because that's huge this year especially, and I grew up
- 18:39Speaker 8: in San Diego, so I spent a lot of time
- 18:41Speaker 8: in Anaheim going to the theme parks, going to skate parks.
- 18:45Speaker 8: One of my best friends actually live there growing up,
- 18:48Speaker 8: so I would stay with him quite a bit and
- 18:50Speaker 8: we would go skate, we would go to the beach.
- 18:53Speaker 8: And now being a father and a grandfather, I get
- 18:57Speaker 8: to share, especially the theme park with the new generation.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Tony, hearing you say grandfather is shocking to me because
- 19:06Speaker 4: you are somebody totally shocked by that. Yes, you're somebody
- 19:10Speaker 4: whose popularity never ages, you know what I mean in
- 19:14Speaker 4: terms of the minds of people, at least to me.
- 19:16Speaker 4: I'm curious, do you find that your popularity never ages,
- 19:19Speaker 4: or are there times or you're just like, yeah, no,
- 19:22Speaker 4: I'm a little older than I used to be.
- 19:25Speaker 6: Oh well, I definitely feel like I'm a little older
- 19:27Speaker 6: and I used to be.
- 19:28Speaker 8: I mean just in terms of how my body feels
- 19:31Speaker 8: and what I'm capable of on a skateboard. But I
- 19:34Speaker 8: embrace it. I mean, I love that I'm able to
- 19:36Speaker 8: skate into my fifties and still do it at a
- 19:39Speaker 8: pretty high level. But also to see just how far
- 19:42Speaker 8: a skateboarding has come, the evolution of it and the
- 19:45Speaker 8: idea that kids are encouraged to skate their parents support it,
- 19:50Speaker 8: that just didn't happen in my era. And so yeah,
- 19:55Speaker 8: it's amazing. I mean I definitely I get recognized quite
- 19:58Speaker 8: a bit. But I think that's not just about skateboarding.
- 20:01Speaker 8: That's more about video games.
- 20:03Speaker 4: It doesn't matter if they're in their forties or in
- 20:04Speaker 4: their teens, you are still have that level of fandom
- 20:08Speaker 4: around you. Right, that's got to feel youthful for you even, right.
- 20:11Speaker 6: It's incredible.
- 20:12Speaker 8: I never imagined, well, I mean when I started skating,
- 20:15Speaker 8: you could not be famous from skateboarding.
- 20:19Speaker 6: Yes, if anything you were, you were you were.
- 20:22Speaker 8: Ostracized because you skated. So to have any sort of
- 20:26Speaker 8: level of fame, it has been amazing. And you know,
- 20:28Speaker 8: it's definitely afforded us incredible opportunities just in terms of
- 20:32Speaker 8: family events, family trips, you know.
- 20:36Speaker 6: And that's not lost on me. I don't take it
- 20:37Speaker 6: for granted, Tony.
- 20:39Speaker 9: When you turned professional in skateboarding, what was the best
- 20:42Speaker 9: case scenario in your mind?
- 20:46Speaker 6: I'll tell you.
- 20:46Speaker 1: I can tell you.
- 20:47Speaker 8: The moment I turned pro was I had reached the
- 20:50Speaker 8: top of the amateur ranks and there was an event.
- 20:53Speaker 6: It was in.
- 20:53Speaker 8: Wittier, which is actually really close to here, and I
- 20:56Speaker 8: was filling out the entry form with my name and address,
- 20:59Speaker 8: and there was a box that said amateur in a
- 21:02Speaker 8: box that said pro, and then I ticked the pro.
- 21:04Speaker 6: Box and that made me a pro skater. Wow moment.
- 21:09Speaker 8: And then I was competing for one hundred dollars first
- 21:12Speaker 8: place prize money and seventy five per second, fifty for
- 21:17Speaker 8: third and I got fourth.
- 21:23Speaker 4: That must have ticked you off out of the money.
- 21:25Speaker 6: So no, I mean fourth place. My first pro event
- 21:28Speaker 6: was a pretty good showing.
- 21:29Speaker 3: So I was that bad? Yes?
- 21:31Speaker 2: Was there a moment when you told your parents, Hey,
- 21:34Speaker 2: I'm going to be a professional skateboarder And if so,
- 21:36Speaker 2: what was their reaction to it?
- 21:38Speaker 6: Well, luckily that my parents were supportive.
- 21:41Speaker 8: In fact, my dad drove me to that event, so
- 21:44Speaker 8: I had their support. I think that the time where
- 21:47Speaker 8: it was actually a decision to be made is when
- 21:50Speaker 8: I was graduating in high school and my parents were very.
- 21:55Speaker 6: Very strong about education.
- 21:57Speaker 8: All my siblings had gone to college, and when I
- 22:00Speaker 8: told them that I just wanted to chase skateboarding, they said, well,
- 22:03Speaker 8: maybe you should go to take some classes at community
- 22:05Speaker 8: college as well. And by that time I was touring
- 22:09Speaker 8: the world. I got an offer for a movie part
- 22:13Speaker 8: for a Gleaming the Cube. In fact, Gleaming the Cube
- 22:16Speaker 8: saved me from.
- 22:16Speaker 6: College's true wow, because.
- 22:18Speaker 8: Then I had to I had to move to la
- 22:20Speaker 8: for a few months and I couldn't enroll in college.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Well, congratulations to you.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Yeah, this is a college so overrated, very expensive too.
- 22:30Speaker 4: I've always been curious about this because I've actually looked
- 22:32Speaker 4: this up in the past, like multiple times, because I
- 22:34Speaker 4: couldn't remember if it was actually your real name, Tony Hawk,
- 22:37Speaker 4: And of course is your real name. Did you know
- 22:39Speaker 4: back then that my name might actually help me out?
- 22:42Speaker 4: Because obviously your ability is ridiculous, but you're never as
- 22:45Speaker 4: a bonus sounds also.
- 22:47Speaker 6: Not at all.
- 22:47Speaker 8: No, I mean, when you're in sixth grade and people
- 22:51Speaker 8: are calling you Bonnie Cow, doesn't seem like it's a
- 22:53Speaker 8: god sense of a name.
- 22:57Speaker 6: That's true?
- 22:58Speaker 1: Oh my god, to kids do he's so proud of
- 23:01Speaker 1: that joke.
- 23:02Speaker 8: I mean, it was the seventies and eighties, like we
- 23:05Speaker 8: didn't you know, they didn't even call it bullying.
- 23:08Speaker 6: He just got picked on and being a skateboarder was
- 23:11Speaker 6: extra hard.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Yes, No, he's right, is he?
- 23:14Speaker 2: If you remember growing up I skateboarded growing up, I
- 23:17Speaker 2: mean I did it was here the worst.
- 23:19Speaker 6: They were the lowest on the total pool of cool.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Yeah I should see not in my view, but look
- 23:26Speaker 4: at you now, Tony, I can't complain.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Tony.
- 23:31Speaker 9: How much of skateboarding's explosion in popularity do you attribute
- 23:34Speaker 9: to people discovering the video game series.
- 23:39Speaker 8: I've definitely heard people say that they got into skateboarding
- 23:42Speaker 8: because of the game. I think what's what's more interesting
- 23:45Speaker 8: to me is that there is a generation of skaters
- 23:48Speaker 8: now that played the game and thought every trick was
- 23:53Speaker 8: based on a real life trick, even though we had
- 23:56Speaker 8: all these impossible, fantastical combos you could do, and so
- 24:00Speaker 8: they as they as they learned to skate, and then
- 24:03Speaker 8: as they became really good at it, they learned how
- 24:05Speaker 8: to do those combos in real life. That's what I
- 24:07Speaker 8: think is the most fascinating aspect of our game is
- 24:09Speaker 8: that it inspired real life skating that I thought was impossible.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Tony, you had an IQ of one.
- 24:17Speaker 6: I mean, I like how you said in past tense.
- 24:22Speaker 6: Probably a good thing.
- 24:24Speaker 4: You know, people get shorter in life, they're at que
- 24:27Speaker 4: gets smaller.
- 24:27Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Yeah, what's the uh, what's the most impressive thing you've
- 24:32Speaker 2: ever seen done on a skateboard.
- 24:36Speaker 6: Oh wow, well I am.
- 24:39Speaker 8: I am a vert skater, pool skater by nature. That's
- 24:43Speaker 8: where I started. And when I saw Mitchie Brusko do
- 24:47Speaker 8: a twelve sixty about ten years ago, that was amazing
- 24:53Speaker 8: to me. I mean, you know, at the time, a
- 24:55Speaker 8: nine hundred was rare, a ten eighty was even more rare.
- 24:59Speaker 6: And then he just said, and still no one has
- 25:01Speaker 6: been able to do that since.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Wow, it must be so hard to impress you. It's
- 25:05Speaker 2: like impressing Michael Jordan playing basketball.
- 25:07Speaker 8: I mean, seriously, I'm not really, I mean, I'm just
- 25:10Speaker 8: impressed that skating has come so far that there are
- 25:13Speaker 8: kids that out of the gate learned how to do kickflip.
- 25:15Speaker 8: I mean I kickflip wasn't invented until I was seventeen.
- 25:19Speaker 9: Yes, Tony, As you kept climbing levels of fame, did
- 25:24Speaker 9: you ever have a celebrity encounter where you were like,
- 25:26Speaker 9: I can't believe this person knows who I am.
- 25:32Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll tell you that.
- 25:35Speaker 8: The most surprising one was Jack Black, because Jack Black
- 25:39Speaker 8: told me that he used to skate a park that
- 25:41Speaker 8: was actually in Riverside County, and he told me that
- 25:46Speaker 8: he was there this is like a deep cut.
- 25:48Speaker 6: It was called upland Pipeline.
- 25:50Speaker 8: He told me he was there one time and he
- 25:53Speaker 8: saw me show up, and he said he stopped skating
- 25:56Speaker 8: and sat down.
- 25:56Speaker 6: To watch when he was a kid. That was while
- 26:00Speaker 6: to me.
- 26:00Speaker 8: Then he was well for one, such a hardcore skater,
- 26:03Speaker 8: and then he still knew who I was.
- 26:05Speaker 2: What do you remember about You're You're the only person
- 26:07Speaker 2: I believe to arrive at the White House and be
- 26:12Speaker 2: granted access to bring in a skateboard to the White House.
- 26:16Speaker 2: You were invited to Barack Obama's Father's Day celebration. What
- 26:20Speaker 2: do you remember about that? That's pretty cool.
- 26:22Speaker 6: I wasn't really approved to have the skateboard.
- 26:25Speaker 3: I just brought it.
- 26:27Speaker 8: It was more like ask forgiveness, not permission. And at
- 26:31Speaker 8: one point found myself in a hallway like, I guess
- 26:33Speaker 8: I could probably put my skateboard down, and I asked
- 26:36Speaker 8: one of the other athletes. There was a bunch of
- 26:38Speaker 8: basketball players there too. I asked one of them to
- 26:40Speaker 8: shoot a photo of me skating, because you know, you're
- 26:43Speaker 8: you're You're appointed an escort mostly for security, and I
- 26:48Speaker 8: tried to hit him the phone.
- 26:49Speaker 6: He's like, no, I'm not shooting.
- 26:51Speaker 1: That crazy lose my job.
- 26:55Speaker 4: You had to get through security with it, so somebody
- 26:58Speaker 4: allowed it at some point, So I think.
- 27:00Speaker 8: It was more just turning a blind eye. But I
- 27:02Speaker 8: mean I was to you know, that was like a
- 27:04Speaker 8: bucket list.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Yeah, if anybody's allowed to bring a skateboard, it's this
- 27:07Speaker 4: guy Tony curious, like, you're still somebody who will try
- 27:11Speaker 4: new tricks at this age. I'm somebody who still plays
- 27:14Speaker 4: like a lot of sports at my age at forty
- 27:15Speaker 4: eight and trying to, you know, be as good as
- 27:18Speaker 4: I can be at this age. What are you still
- 27:20Speaker 4: trying to challenge yourself to do at this age? And
- 27:23Speaker 4: also what other sort of athletes out there that are
- 27:26Speaker 4: you know, in some people's mind, past their prime, still
- 27:29Speaker 4: impressing the heck out of you.
- 27:31Speaker 8: Oh wow, Well, I still try new tricks, but they're
- 27:35Speaker 8: just sort of more more technical and more like spinning
- 27:40Speaker 8: the board this way, grinding this way. It's not it's
- 27:43Speaker 8: not some big aerial maneuver or spinning maneuver. I just
- 27:47Speaker 8: I just don't want the high impact obviously, so it's
- 27:50Speaker 8: just more self. It's history interesting to me, Like if
- 27:52Speaker 8: I were to tell you I did a shove it
- 27:55Speaker 8: to all you people to faky. It's it's not going
- 27:58Speaker 8: to move the needle, but it it's fun, you know,
- 28:01Speaker 8: it keeps me creative. But I will say that in
- 28:04Speaker 8: terms of progression, and the most impressive is Kelly Slater.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 28:09Speaker 6: I mean he's in his fifties, he's still winning the
- 28:12Speaker 6: world titles.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 28:14Speaker 6: And he can still surf any way, is amazing.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Yeah, Tony, what's the worst injury. I'm sorry to bring
- 28:19Speaker 2: up bad stuff. What's the worst injury you've suffered because
- 28:22Speaker 2: you were skateboarding?
- 28:24Speaker 8: I broke my femur four years ago, Jesus. And when
- 28:28Speaker 8: you're slitting down the ramp and your your leg is
- 28:30Speaker 8: pointing in an unnatural direction, that's when she gets real.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:36Speaker 4: I've always wondered about those, Tony. Is it like, is
- 28:39Speaker 4: the pain so bad that you don't even feel that
- 28:41Speaker 4: your numb or is the pain actually because you see
- 28:44Speaker 4: what you know, direction or how.
- 28:47Speaker 8: In the moment, it just feels more like it's fake
- 28:51Speaker 8: because it's you know, like my leg was literally pointing
- 28:53Speaker 8: the wrong direction, but it felt I think I think
- 28:56Speaker 8: the most the most intense feeling was that it was disconnected.
- 29:02Speaker 4: Right, you couldn't control it in any way.
- 29:04Speaker 8: Yeah, so I literally grabbed it and tried to put
- 29:06Speaker 8: it back and play it, which was idiotic, but desperate times.
- 29:11Speaker 8: The most pain that I felt in that whole episode
- 29:13Speaker 8: was when they tried to put me onto a stretcher.
- 29:15Speaker 8: Because they put me, they lifted me up, but my
- 29:17Speaker 8: leg is not connected, so they couldn't lift my leg
- 29:21Speaker 8: in the same cadence as my body, and it's just dangling.
- 29:24Speaker 6: And that was Yeah. I think I blocked all that out.
- 29:27Speaker 3: I'm almost sorry. I asked.
- 29:32Speaker 2: How difficult, like skateboarding came so naturally to you. A
- 29:35Speaker 2: lot of things I believe come naturally to you. Did
- 29:37Speaker 2: acting become Was that? Was that a natural fit for you? No?
- 29:41Speaker 3: No, not at all.
- 29:43Speaker 6: No, I mean I kind of had to figure out.
- 29:45Speaker 6: I had to ease my way into it.
- 29:47Speaker 8: I think the easiest version of that is just that
- 29:50Speaker 8: I get to play myself usually, so that is much
- 29:54Speaker 8: easier than trying to play some sinister villain or you know,
- 29:59Speaker 8: some romant of interest.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Tony.
- 30:02Speaker 9: The other thing, you look like you were a naturn
- 30:04Speaker 9: celebrity wheel fortune. You you absolutely dominant.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Very much.
- 30:09Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, we're nervous sir, I was, yes, very much.
- 30:13Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a lot. You don't get a NORQ, Tony.
- 30:18Speaker 4: I mean, what was the prep like for that? Did
- 30:19Speaker 4: you actually prep for it or did you just go?
- 30:21Speaker 6: I played? I played their U their phone game.
