- 0:00Thank you, Dennis, for inviting me to share some of my story.
- 0:04It's a privilege to be able to share some of my experience,
- 0:08strength and hope my name is Toya.
- 0:11I'm a recovered alcoholic. My sobriety date is the 26th of
- 0:14March 1994. I am grateful that I have not
- 0:20needed to pick up a drink of alcohol since my first meeting
- 0:24on that day. And as I was promised at that
- 0:28meeting, you can leave this room.
- 0:30You need never drink again. If you so desire, like first
- 0:34heard about 12 step programs when I was about 14 and it was
- 0:38suggested to me that I go to alateen, I was already drinking
- 0:42by them and hiding it lying about it being secretive.
- 0:48So my parents wouldn't know, I did come home, drunk one night
- 0:52and they were very angry with me, but when it was suggested
- 0:56that I go to alateen, I was angry and said, no, he's the
- 1:00problem if he stopped drinking everything would be okay.
- 1:04And a counselor or whoever it was that visited our home said.
- 1:09No. It's not about your drinking.
- 1:11It's because your father drinks. And again I was very angry then
- 1:15and and refused to go to ality Simply believing that if my
- 1:20father stop drinking, everything would be okay.
- 1:24I had been a straight-A student when I started high school but
- 1:29by the age of 13 or 14, I was binge drinking every weekend and
- 1:34you using other substances as well.
- 1:36I left High School to work at a government agency around about
- 1:40the age of 17 and left that job. After not very long to go around
- 1:49Australia with a boyfriend, at the time, thinking it would be
- 1:52different over there. I didn't see many of the usual
- 1:56tourist, attractions, the places I went.
- 1:59Basically, what I knew about South Australia, was they drank
- 2:02Cooper's Victoria, BB, and Victoria for eggs in Queensland
- 2:08and the Darwin stubbies up in the Northern Territory and
- 2:12worked in. I wasn't a daily drinker.
- 2:15So, for many years, I didn't think I could possibly be an
- 2:18alcoholic. I had a checklist of things that
- 2:21made me different. Didn't drink in the morning.
- 2:24Didn't drink everyday. I was too smart.
- 2:27I was too young and so on. However, the period of time, I
- 2:35lived in the Northern Territory for about five months around the
- 2:38age of 18 or 19. I drank every day.
- 2:42One of my rules around alcohol was that?
- 2:45If you're on holidays, it's okay to drink every day and I was on
- 2:48a say a working holiday, I had a part-time job at the post office
- 2:52up there which I really We enjoyed and I also enjoyed
- 2:56drinking every day. I had a couple of I blacked out
- 3:02one day in the in a caravan Park I'd been out in the sun in the
- 3:08hot sun and well I've been under the shade but it was a hot day
- 3:13and I had been drinking that morning already took some other
- 3:16substances And literally collapsed and there was an old
- 3:2288 Olden, our car. And when I fell down, I came to
- 3:29with some people looking down at me, with worried, looks on their
- 3:32faces and they said, my head had only just missed the bumper bar
- 3:37of that eh old, and if I just brushed it off, as one of these
- 3:43things that happens and I always had a fear that when I went out
- 3:47to places to parties. They wouldn't be enough alcohol.
- 3:50So I would drink before I went, or I'd take my own drinks and
- 3:54made sure that I got my fair share one night.
- 3:57We've been to a party up there in Darwin and I asked, of
- 4:02course, you know, he is there going to be alcohol.
- 4:05Bear, how much alcohol do we have to bring our own?
- 4:08And they said no, no, they'll be punch there.
- 4:10That's fine. And I figured nobody ever made
- 4:13punch strong enough or there wasn't enough.
- 4:15So I took a large bottle of vodka with me me and be the kind
- 4:20of selfish greedy drunk that I was, I clung to that bottle and
- 4:24was reluctant to share it with anyone.
- 4:26I recall, maybe putting a little bit of it in the punch, but
- 4:32fearing that others would drink the punch.
- 4:33I continue to drink from that bottle of vodka and I came to in
- 4:39the Caravan the next morning again, people looking over me.
- 4:42Worried and my boyfriend said last night, you said you were
- 4:46never going to drink again. And I immediately backtracked on
- 4:51that and said no no no I don't think you know I wouldn't have
- 4:54said that. No no no I'll never drink Vodka
- 4:57again, that's it. And for the next four or five
- 5:01years, my drinking continued in that kind of a pattern, kind of
- 5:07came back to Perth and it was night clubs parties pubs.
- 5:13I didn't think I was an alcoholic, I thought I was a
- 5:15social Drinker because I never sat at home alone drink Aching.
- 5:20And I had asked my mother why my father drank at home alone like
- 5:25that. And she said, he did used to
- 5:27drink with people, but he had drank people out of his life
- 5:32over time and and I was fortunate in my job at that
- 5:37time. It was very difficult to get
- 5:39sacked from the place. I worked, one time I was
- 5:42overlooked for a promotion and I was most indignant about that
- 5:47when I ask for Feedback. Why didn't I get the job?
- 5:50Which I felt should have been mine?
- 5:53I was told, but I took too many sick days again in my
- 5:56entitlement and arrogance was very indignant and said, well, I
- 6:01had a doctor's note for all those times and I've got a
- 6:07transfer to a different department, So my drinking went
- 6:11on like this, lost my driver's license for drink-driving at one
- 6:16point and there was a couple of other charges related to that
- 6:19incident and I tried, I felt this increasing unhappiness and
- 6:25darkness and depression and loneliness and discontent this
- 6:28contentedness. I used to blow my boyfriend for
- 6:31that. He also was heavily into alcohol
- 6:35and other substances and and I just blamed him.
- 6:39I thought it was all his fault. I didn't realize then, but I had
- 6:42made him my higher power and made him responsible. finally,
- 6:50at the end of my drinking, I Yeah, I tried the counselors
- 6:57psychologists self-help books, joined the gym.
- 7:01Became a vegetarian. Tried to find mr.
- 7:03Right thought Matt, what if I had better Furniture, I don't
- 7:08know. But I do I knew somehow that
- 7:10none of these things were going to make any difference.
- 7:13I tried to find help through religion.
- 7:16I'd gone to a church and it just made me feel worse about myself.
- 7:20I saw all these Shiny Happy People who looked like, good and
- 7:24nice people. And I felt so terrible inside
- 7:28and I knew I wasn't living life the right way.
- 7:30Drunkenness sometimes having jekyll-and-hyde personality
- 7:35changes and so on I wasn't proud of myself and And I wanted my
- 7:41mom to be proud of me and so I hid it from her, I led a double
- 7:45life. I went to work Monday to Friday
- 7:479 to 5 immaculately dressed immaculately made up, but on the
- 7:52weekends it was a booze and drugs.
- 7:53Free-for-all and I hid that from my mum but she knew something
- 7:58was wrong, but for some reason she didn't ever confronted me
- 8:02about it, she never asked me what was wrong.
- 8:04She would lend me money to see me through to Payday and I
- 8:07always paid it back again adjusted.
- 8:10Sighing that it's not a problem. I always pay it back.
- 8:14However, when I finally hit that last Rock, Bottom on the 26th of
- 8:18March 1994, again, I'd come to out of a blackout and I was
- 8:22terrified and I realized that I can't go on like this, something
- 8:27has to happen. I didn't know what it would be,
- 8:30and I said to my mum, I I have a drinking problem.
- 8:36I think I'm an alcoholic and with that the floodgates opened,
- 8:39and I was sobbing and Howling crying because to be an
- 8:43alcoholic, was the last thing in the world, I wanted to be hated
- 8:48alcoholics. I felt contempt for them.
- 8:50I thought they were nasty stupid, weak people, and I can't
- 8:54be in that category. My mum said, I can't help you.
- 8:58If you want help, you have to get help for yourself.
- 9:00She gave me the phone book gave me the number of a telephone
- 9:04Alcohol and drug counseling line.
- 9:06I rang that number. It was a Saturday.
- 9:09I was hungover and I said, I think I'm an alcoholic and I was
- 9:14terrified because I didn't want to be an alcoholic.
- 9:17And he said, don't be too quick to label yourself and that
- 9:20struck fear into me. If I'm not an alcoholic, then
- 9:23what's wrong with me? He said, perhaps you'd better
- 9:28give a or call. I was getting a bit short with
- 9:30him. I was very, very sick, very
- 9:32hungover and frightened terrified. if I'd what might be
- 9:36wrong with me, Necesito got to my first meeting of Alcoholics
- 9:41Anonymous, that night 26th of March 1994.
- 9:44I have not needed to drink since such as the power of this
- 9:47program. And so much has been given to me
- 9:50since then. By the grace of God.
- 9:53And I say, the grace of God, meaning the god of my
- 9:57understanding, my own higher power, not a god of religion but
- 10:01my very own personal belief in a power greater than myself and a
- 10:06week or two before I'd arrived at that meeting.
- 10:09I had prayed to something someone whatever's out there.
- 10:13Why am I here? If I'm on this Earth just to
- 10:17work to earn money to back to pay bills and buy material
- 10:21Goods. If That's it, I'm out.
- 10:23I'm not doing it, that's not good enough.
- 10:25I was really searching for meaning and purpose in my life
- 10:29and I was very disconnected alone lonely.
- 10:34Despairing full of self-pity. I didn't see that at the time.
- 10:39I didn't know this was my poisons.
- 10:41Self-pity selfishness self-centeredness.
- 10:43I've only learned that since coming to the rooms of
- 10:47Alcoholics Anonymous and I've heard that the truth will set
- 10:50you free, so it's not a negative thing for me to have a look at
- 10:55myself to take a good, long hard, look in the mirror and to
- 10:58clear away that wreckage of the past to see where I've been at
- 11:02fault and to quit playing the blame game.
- 11:04I was blamed my parents, I blamed other people.
- 11:08I blame the teachers blade. My boyfriend blaming my friends,
- 11:11but in the end there was no one left for me.
- 11:14My world had shrunk down to just me, thank God my mum had stuck
- 11:18in there with me and so I've caught a bus into train to cross
- 11:22to the other side of the city to attend that first meeting of
- 11:24Alcoholics Anonymous. I didn't want anyone to see me
- 11:27walking into an AA meeting, but I had been in a blackout on the
- 11:32streets of Perth and I before, and No one could have seen me
- 11:35and my bad behavior. And so it was a relief to find
- 11:38out in Alcoholics Anonymous. That I'm not a bad person.
- 11:42I'm a sick person. And I have an allergy to
- 11:45alcohol. Once I start, I can't stop it.
- 11:48Sets off the phenomenon of craving, so if I don't pick up
- 11:52that first drink I can't get drunk but what precedes that
- 11:55first drink because I'm sober all dry if you like before.
- 12:01I take that first drink. So with these binges, I might go
- 12:04For two or three with that weeks without drinking functioning
- 12:07seemingly like other people showing up for work, paying my
- 12:11bills and so on. But inside, I was dying
- 12:16mentally, emotionally, and spiritually bankrupt.
- 12:18I have? No, I had nothing to give anyone
- 12:20and I thought everyone had to give to me.
- 12:24And so it isn't really a self-help program, it's a self
- 12:28help others program. And it was suggested to me to do
- 12:3290 meetings, in 90 days in the beginning.
- 12:34And I thought that sounded extreme.
- 12:37I didn't even drink. Everyday, why should I do a
- 12:39meeting every day? But something told me that my
- 12:42thinking wasn't to be trusted and all my efforts my throughout
- 12:47my 12-year drinking career. At brought me to Ground, Zero
- 12:51had had a mounted in nothing. Nothing of any substance or
- 12:55Worth or meaning beyond the material.
- 12:59So I became teachable and open-minded and I started
- 13:04attending meetings every day. I found a sponsor just like, in
- 13:08other areas of life, in business, or education people
- 13:12have mentors coaches. And in Alcoholics Anonymous, we
- 13:16have a sponsor someone who will take the time to pass on to me
- 13:21freely. What was given to them?
- 13:22And take me through this 12-step recovery program.
- 13:26So, I had done, step one completed, step, one on that.
- 13:29First day, I've given up the fight.
- 13:31Ended this many paradoxes in a. And that first Paradox happens
- 13:35happens as step one surrender to win and then find a connection
- 13:41to a power greater than myself through the steps.
- 13:45And someone said once that the unexamined life is not worth
- 13:48living, how fortunate I am. I through no virtue of my own to
- 13:52be brought into this beautiful way of life, which involves
- 13:56daily examination of my life and myself.
- 14:00And my attitudes, it's and seeking correction through a
- 14:03power greater than myself and application of spiritual
- 14:06principles. Such as love.
- 14:08Patience, tolerance, forgiveness, kindness,
- 14:11understanding service, to others.
- 14:16And so initially I booked it this house cleaning his personal
- 14:20house, cleaning this inventory, taking I balked at that, I
- 14:23feared what I would find would be too ugly.
- 14:26I can't possibly face it. And there were some in the rooms
- 14:30who suggested taking your time, don't go rushing into the steps
- 14:33but that doesn't make sense to me.
- 14:35Because if I'm at step one, I have a mess.
- 14:38I need to get out of this mess. How do I get out of this mess?
- 14:41Firstly my cleaning up that wreckage from the past, so I
- 14:45took that inventory. There's a warning in that you
- 14:48know, basic text. The Big Book of Alcoholics
- 14:50Anonymous. There's a warning in there that
- 14:52says, if I don't do this house cleaning and share it with
- 14:55another, I may not overcome drinking.
- 14:58And the thought of going back to that hello came from terrified
- 15:01me. So I did a first inventory and
- 15:04shared it with an alcoholic priest.
- 15:07There was a priest in the rooms at the time.
- 15:09Father Dan. I shared my first step 5 with
- 15:12him. And I made amends to the people,
- 15:16I had harmed. And and now today I leave in a
- 15:21relapse prevention, steps 10 11 and 12. 10 step 10.
- 15:26I continue to take inventory, continue to have a look at
- 15:30myself and try to weed out those deficiencies or problems that
- 15:36could lead me back to drinking things like, resentment
- 15:39selfishness Envy jealousy, fear anger.
- 15:44If these things are left to Fester within me, they can lead
- 15:50me back to drinking. It was really a revelation for
- 15:52me to find out. That alcohol is not my problem.
- 15:56My problem are all those poisons.
- 15:58I just mentioned, and I can't afford to Foster or dwell on
- 16:03these poisons because they can lead me back to drinking.
- 16:06So through the step, 10 inventory process, I can see
- 16:09these things. When they crop up I can ask my
- 16:12higher power to remove the But I can also take active steps to
- 16:18practice the opposite. If I am experiencing Envy, I can
- 16:22practice gratitude for what I have rather than looking at what
- 16:25I don't have. And rather than comparing myself
- 16:28to others and to seeing what they have anger, we have anger
- 16:33for a purpose, it's an energy. If I need to take action on some
- 16:37injustice, then I need to do that.
- 16:39However I can't hold grudges, I can't brood on things.
- 16:44I I can't manufacture it manufacture and enlarge these
- 16:47things in myself. They're dangerous and self-pity
- 16:52again for me. The antidote of that is
- 16:54gratitude. I can't afford self-pity and I
- 16:56avoid it like the plague. Today, I simply won't allow any
- 17:00self-pity into my life and in fact, when I look at the life
- 17:04that I have today, it's a absolutely laughable to imagine
- 17:08that I could even experienced any self-pity that education of
- 17:13mine. That was Corrupted by my
- 17:15alcoholism at a young age. I I was able to go to university
- 17:21for the first time. I had a baby doll baby.
- 17:24By that time she was two years old.
- 17:26I was eight years sober and I went to University I didn't know
- 17:29if I could do it or not and in fact when I first started
- 17:32reading a big book, I was scared, I might have done
- 17:35permanent damage to myself to my brain.
- 17:37I had I couldn't concentrate. I couldn't read more than one or
- 17:40two paragraphs and I'd get lost and have to go back to the
- 17:43beginning and read it again. But a a has taught me that one
- 17:47day at a time. One step, at a time.
- 17:49Anything. Is achievable.
- 17:50So I started out at University and thought, well, I'll give it
- 17:54a go and see what happens. And if it doesn't work out, at
- 17:57least I tried. And and I remember sitting at
- 18:01the very front of that large lecture hall with my baby in the
- 18:05pram and I had tears in my eyes, finally, I'm here.
- 18:08I'm actually at University, it was a big, big deal for me.
- 18:13And from start to finish, I did a bachelor's degree, post
- 18:17graduate diploma and a master's degree.
- 18:19University from start to finish it, took 17 years and that's
- 18:23fine. It's okay.
- 18:25One day at a time, anything is achievable.
- 18:27If I just keeps showing up and so I have a career today that
- 18:33I'm very, very grateful to Alcoholics Anonymous for because
- 18:36when I went to UNI, I got a mental, I thought.
- 18:39Wow, they were offering new students mentorship and I AAA
- 18:44has taught me. Yeah, I don't do anything by
- 18:46myself. I get I take advantage of all
- 18:49the help that's offered to me whether it's at Uni at
- 18:52Alcoholics Anonymous work anywhere.
- 18:55My pride doesn't get in the way false Pride can kill me.
- 19:00I'm not scared to ask for help today.
- 19:02Still even at 29 years sober, I don't hesitate if I need help,
- 19:06I'll ask for it. I will share with my sponsor and
- 19:10sponsee these and fellows. My beautiful daughter who's 23
- 19:14years old and also has been sober for three and a half years
- 19:18now has never seen me. Drink and we have this beautiful
- 19:21program of recovery that we can share together and I'm grateful
- 19:24for that. I'm grateful that AAA has taught
- 19:28me to live. And I life that life is about so
- 19:33much more than not drinking. If this was just about not
- 19:36drinking and having that same life that I had back, then it's
- 19:40not what I wanted. I had to have something
- 19:42different and it has been given to me in Alcoholics Anonymous.
- 19:46So when I had cried out to God, why have you put me here Within
- 19:51a week or two, I'd found myself in the meeting of Alcoholics
- 19:54Anonymous and somewhere within those first few days, it's a
- 19:59portion out of our basic text read at each meeting, how it
- 20:03works, and step 12 of how it works is having had a spiritual
- 20:08awakening as the result of these steps.
- 20:11We tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice
- 20:14these principles in all our Affairs.
- 20:17And there was the answer to my crying out.
- 20:20Out to God. Why have you put me here?
- 20:22I saw it get sober. Stay sober.
- 20:25Help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
- 20:28That's my purpose in life. There's my meaning, that's my
- 20:31mission and it's something I feel very, very passionate
- 20:34about. I love Alcoholics Anonymous and
- 20:37I try to carry this message today in any way I possibly can.
- 20:41And so it's my hope today, that by my sharing, some of my story,
- 20:46some of my experience strength and hope it might help someone
- 20:49somewhere. Thank you for listening.
- 20:50Thank you for listening.
