- 1:23today's episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. The original air date October twenty
- 1:30ninth of nineteen forty nine, and this one is the Green Win. It's
- 1:36times she had had suns from more red sunset moves, is warm honey and
- 1:40a generous mouth that lasts without movie. It was beautiful except for her cold
- 1:46green eyes. From the pen of Raymond Transford, I'm spending author of crime
- 1:51fiction comes his most famous character in the ad Bunches of Hilla Marlow now with
- 2:07Jerald Moore says on a bottle, we bring you Tonight's exciting. Sorry the
- 2:12green wits. Once upon a time, Halloween has been a day and a
- 2:29night on which mortal man had hit stowed over the face of the earth,
- 2:31holding cold hands was here and starting of each new shadow which the harvest Moon
- 2:37casts. That's still another twisted, grotesque govern first thing to drink dry human
- 2:42soul. I read that in the book. Once read something else too.
- 2:47The Vigil of Hollow Mass is a genuine spook show had definitely started downhill with
- 2:53the Romans. It did almost everything else until now Halloween has come to mean
- 2:58gates feeling are of course the mouth practice was proping and schalking everything into side
- 3:08till today unless you're really on your clothes and under twelve, and I'm neither.
- 3:13The thirty first day of October nineteen forty nine, but easily ever,
- 3:15peer is just that and no more. Until a worried man named John Dissipate
- 3:21at my office. I said, trick a freight until he unfolded one hundred
- 3:23dollars bill and came right to the point. Morrow four days ago, and
- 3:28man I once knew, broke out of Illinois prison. My testimony in court
- 3:30here ago sent him to that prison. Now I'm afraid he's coming after me
- 3:35for revenge. The name is Dale ST's and I want you to protect me
- 3:38from him. Is he here in Lam's division here? I am not certain.
- 3:43However, this morning a friend of mine told me of a man in
- 3:45a shabby brown tweed suit who ask about me but wouldn't identify himself. That's
- 3:50all the descriptions could give me. But here, mister Morrow, here's a
- 3:53picture of a LSD. Is his master's it's a prisoner implication pictures. Will
- 3:59you say to clothes and remove the number? It doesn't leave much I know.
- 4:02Tell me, mister Bishop, what do you want me to do?
- 4:04I want you to locate this man Estes and keep him from killing police will
- 4:09do that nothing plus a lot of noisy publicity. And I don't want because
- 4:14in the first place, it won't help my real estate business any And also
- 4:15I well I as somebody who rather not have worrying about you. Maybe,
- 4:20yes, Madeline Hughes, my fan, say please, mister Marlow, will
- 4:25you try to find sts once as soon as possible before tonight. Aw what
- 4:30happens then our masquerade and the spacific Palisades Country Club is a lonely spot out
- 4:34there. Well why go to the masquerade? If I didn't, Madeline would
- 4:38know there was something wrong, should worry, and I had to keep my
- 4:41purpose. Now, mister Marlow, all I can give you to go,
- 4:44honor three things. First, Dale ST's was once enabled body and seen me.
- 4:47Second, he likes Spanish food, could eat it three time today.
- 4:50And third he'd gladly give up both to watch a prize fight. He'll kill
- 4:56me, mister Morrow, I know he will. Maybe the magic of Halloween
- 5:04night had something to do with it. I don't know, but when I
- 5:08started looking for an escape convict, it might possibly be some place in the
- 5:11sprawling city of Los Angeles with murder on his mind, things began to change.
- 5:15First, it was ten year old girls planching around in their mother's high
- 5:18heeled lipsticks and affectations. The gangling boys screaming home from school via the great
- 5:25mischief rub. That much was fun. Then it got started everywhere. The
- 5:30kids went home and took their laughter with him, and I went looking for
- 5:34day Let see, I seemed to meet people who wore everyday's faces that I
- 5:39was sure could be masks, people like the old lady w Aoran, a
- 5:42Spanish restaurant located off a crooked alley below the street level. It started with
- 5:46her at the entrance to a damp, cold cave. Yeah, I did
- 5:54not ever see him. I'm as put no further and dely face. I
- 6:04know, Americ got worse until in my imagination even the scar brute faced on
- 6:16the sweating hulk in the distant dusky corner of the surge of Nasium. I
- 6:19tribe being to the long rest of a twenty es century man, and more
- 6:24to a preostotic brute out of some jock long ago jungle. Nobody likes that.
- 6:30I ain't been watching me today. Nobody ain't been watching me at all
- 6:33for as long as I can remember it. And finally, after two hours
- 6:44along the Santa Monica fishing piers, one hundred withered pounds of ancient manners tearing
- 6:48out the sea and more to say yes, yes, I know it.
- 6:54This Druce was spending next to me when the boiler exploded that night. We
- 6:59few talks. He was kid, but I told the skipper all about that
- 7:04one story. His name was SB two and so was the first mate Dale
- 7:12sc everybody's name. Hello, Allow, mister Bishop, I haven't run across
- 7:30and listen. He's been seen again. Yes, or at least a man
- 7:33in a heavy brown tweet this time near in my office. A model.
- 7:38Get over to thirty one thirty North Havenhurst Drive as soon as you can.
- 7:42Yes, it's a costumer shop. Alberta was in Garrol. I'll meet you
- 7:46there. Bye bye. Alberta's and Garral customer had at least a tangible name
- 7:53and occupation. The shop was cut it on and grabbed me. Windows and
- 7:57card wooden't go all immodestly marketed required his name and handsome twelve inch high goal
- 8:01leaded with a card dangling from the front door and now reading back. In
- 8:05ten minutes, mister Alberto is in go. There was nothing left for me
- 8:11to do but wait until from some place with an arms breach the conversation with
- 8:13the clat opening. You have a match please, yeah, I get so
- 8:18here when I raised the cup flames for a smiling face supporting a midsualized sunburn
- 8:26top by blonde crew cut hair. I got ready for trouble. It never
- 8:30came, thank you, yeah morrow, yeah, tomorrow. That mister going
- 8:39Offah, just the guy out of matches. Oh oh well, I wonder
- 8:43where was in? Girl is? He said everything to be ready and waiting
- 8:46for both of this. Me is, methistopoles. You just a minute.
- 8:50We've said nothing about me going to that mass. Great, mister Bishop.
- 8:52Not a word, mister marlow Please, I'm sure Este's is going to try
- 8:56to get me to night. Yeah, I know, but when you want.
- 9:00I'm sorry to be late, but there was a costume that mister Marlowe
- 9:03they gentleman to call about. You'll be able to fear him, all right,
- 9:07I don't know. It depends and whether or not our sands pillow.
- 9:11You know I'll pay you, I know, right, Okay, I'm wonderful.
- 9:18Opened the door. I am? I am? Where is that light
- 9:22twitch? Oh? Yeah yes? And now here is your costume? This?
- 9:31This is in my costume? Yes, yes, you like it?
- 9:35You do. It's pretty grotesque even for Mephistopheles. The winds my finest creation.
- 9:43It will surely bring you the first prize of the masquerade. If piorry
- 9:46bear's head hold and all it is a spouse to the devil, the lord
- 9:50of darkness. And look, hunch high on your back, a black wing.
- 9:56You pull this cord here in the wi and just for you, mister
- 10:03Marlowe, let me speak something I can whip up quickly. Girl. Look,
- 10:07marlow I appreciate it if you'd stop on your way to the club and
- 10:11pick up Madelon. It's here's your fiance saying yes, pick her up at
- 10:13my place twenty three forty one, twenty three forty miles. Gentlemen, I
- 10:18have just be seen today, mister Marlowe to night, Count Alessandro Canostro,
- 10:28eighteenth century impostor, criminals and lover part et alone. That's me all in
- 10:39all. It was another hour and I was just about rid of the afterclad
- 10:41day's goblin when I finally pulled up and parked in front of John Bishop's meet,
- 10:46Redwood and Glass Square in suburban Pacific Salad Days. When I was out
- 10:52of my car and walking toward the thin stream of light that leaked out of
- 10:54the front door, which was open, interest. Halloween goblin started coming back
- 10:58back. They whispered to me, of what I might find a cross of
- 11:03threshold a head. It took on me a finger tips to weave the door
- 11:07open. Then inside, in the middle of the living room floor, a
- 11:11framed picture of a girl takes up a glass over smashed into a huge starburst
- 11:16and around the edge, and a trickle of blood. Ah but the girl
- 11:22with bootool hair spun from a red pant skin. This smooth, there's warm
- 11:28honey. The generous mouth that laughs without moving beautiful, that's arise. It
- 11:37were green, a green then moves clear and white and deep. They laughed
- 11:43too. But the sounds yourself somehow wasn't nice? It was cool, mister
- 11:48Marla, mister Marla. He oh, don't forgive me. It's the first
- 11:56time I've seen the green witch. Well its women. Yeah, of course
- 12:01I know I'm missing the black eyed peas in the yard. Oh it's probably
- 12:07the wind. But if I may count Alexandro Taliostro, awaits your pleasures of
- 12:16Oh, oh that's you, Yeah, that's me. Oh nice, and
- 12:22how handsome to so that A man a n said, was your one old
- 12:26friend your arm? Please can the green Richard ready, did we drive or
- 12:33flock Statan himself couldn't have done a better job. In the West Palisade country
- 12:43Club, the building, which was long and tasted too close to the edge
- 12:46of the cliffs that plumbed the two hundred abrupt fleets of the churning sea below,
- 12:50was flooded in a sickly green light, while skeletons in the trees hanging
- 12:54in the restless wind by the narrow necks dance the shadowy jig to the accustoment
- 12:58of the rushing search. A long narrow path which ran along the quick side
- 13:03leading to the country club entrance was labeled dead Man's Walk, and every fifty
- 13:07feet a life guise dummy of an infamous man, first on the balustrade and
- 13:11sad blindly out to sea. Somehow you couldn't quite last. However, inside
- 13:20life was more pleasant. The light swere brighter, the costumes firepots on the
- 13:24reach fox here, and Madeleine was a little prettier than possible. And when
- 13:30she watched me up to a grand dame who was dressed as money antoinette,
- 13:33but who was wide enough to have also passed for four of the ladies in
- 13:35waiting, I couldn't make my eyes let go sall. Now, your excellency,
- 13:46I wilted you to our clubs. I did. I opened you talk
- 13:52clove. No excuse me, I mean thank you. I mean I'm sorry.
- 13:56I was looking for a friend. A beast was wis O that one
- 14:01jombs over there? I need the punch gold. As we have said,
- 14:03there was there a glass size thumb bottle for a costume. Quite appropriate,
- 14:09my DearS, the only team and the gentleman on the inside knows who's mom
- 14:13believe me? And the only who station when the Marie Antoinette rejected cut him
- 14:22that none and mor the one with the humph on his back heading for the
- 14:24veranda. He's here they too, Uh gentleman, the notorious juke of lost
- 14:31the historical hue. He looks perfectly ridiculous with that beach boy complexion. Yeah
- 14:37and crew cut, Madeline, you haven't part of your nose yet. But
- 14:43it doesn't mean. Oh yes it does, and that funny decide. I
- 14:46need a breath of fresh air. I feel faint all along fall It's five
- 14:56falls on workmark fi bet I ever spilled his off. The guy's a rying,
- 15:03how are you? It is not I just thought I broke my car,
- 15:09but they do. Yah, Duke, I'd like to talk to you
- 15:20a moment. Please talk to me for you. Uh, I can't tell
- 15:28you. Man, it's pretty good, but that's yeah, Well maybe I
- 15:31can help you. The one thing, I'm an international villain of thought,
- 15:33but another just a nice run of a middle guy. I kind of never
- 15:37refused the stranger of life. Remember why? Oh you're the guy, Yeah,
- 15:43the guy you asked for a light when he was standing in front of
- 15:45Albert Zingaro's costume shops. Before you can start talking about a smaller world we
- 15:50live in or start lying about a natural your appearance was there? Let's have
- 15:52the truth. Come on, ten pants. Was it because of their lestis
- 15:56delestices? You slipped? All right? What's the difference? Yes, it
- 16:03was because of that dude. I know that he's an escaped convict. I
- 16:07also know he's the one way I can get mettling away from that worthless mister.
- 16:11Shall I say Bishop or do you prefer the full name? John Essey?
- 16:15Bishop? And Essie's a related liking brothers. Thanks, duke, how
- 16:19much your brother hold on? What do you think your doll? Keep your
- 16:22hands off iron man, your face is hanging out. You know you'll not
- 16:26end up fear not. I my hand hop I dropped a duke of gloster.
- 16:38His face twisted and hurt surprise, and his pseuit of pony armor landed
- 16:41on a flight stone pass like a truckload of tin cans, with him in
- 16:45the middle, who was still clanking as I left him and went back to
- 16:48the ballroom, where I spotted my client, a beast with wings with a
- 16:52punch bowl, again making himself even more hideous looking by pouring punch down a
- 16:56slip in his neck a long taper machet chin. When I got close enough
- 17:00to speak his name, he's fun, taught me like I stuck a pin
- 17:03in him. What do you want? You're getting pretty jumpy, bishop you,
- 17:07but I take it easy. I'll say, you're getting a little picked
- 17:11pune. Don't you think you're riding the punch bowl too? Hunt? It's
- 17:12really none of your business decision. Certainly is this is my business too?
- 17:18You hired me to pertect you against the less, but you didn't say one
- 17:22word about sd as being your brother. How about it? Well, I
- 17:26didn't think it was necessary. How'd you find up your sunburned friend with a
- 17:30crew cut, a hunchback in armor. I've been checking up on you because
- 17:34he doesn't think you're worthy of meddling. Oh that's so. Where's Madeline?
- 17:38Now? I think a broom's saddle. Maybe I don't know a room.
- 17:41Oh oh yeah, I'll bet you go find her. I listen. I
- 17:45think things are going to be all right. You can take it easier from
- 17:48now on. It gives you that idea. Bishop. Nothing has happened so
- 17:51far, maybe nothing will check with you both tell you just what's your funny
- 18:02bone? Marine was sorry? There the bottle? You know it? Even
- 18:06he just told me that what about wax statues? Out of the fair is
- 18:08bleeding that I saw? Nobody really is a box anyway, it's bleeding real
- 18:18blood too, And that's that's too much. It's all right to have decorations,
- 18:22but usually real brothers behind too far, too far. You mightn't even
- 18:29that gets nobody believe me. I just hey, you'll you'll bring them pelt
- 18:37a white gummy bleeding not really harry you because I saw the one ways and
- 18:41by the fair the white is the brown sweet too. Bleeding real blood out
- 18:47of aggression is dead pool. They just play brown sweet Bob, and I
- 18:52saw brother Brown clay shoulder. But that's nothing. The real blood is the
- 18:56important. Hey, yeah, come on, okay, it's going. It's
- 19:03right over there, pal behind those bushes over there. Come on, youn't
- 19:07say no for me when I do. Well, where is it? Hey,
- 19:12it's gone, somebody run, I'm moving on there. No. Oh
- 19:15yeah, was right here, pops up against the railing, and I had
- 19:19bulled off over his face, but I could see the gash neck from the
- 19:23lights down on the top of the stairs. Come on, Harry, let's
- 19:26get Hey, wait a minute, bottle, you can be right you right
- 19:30here on the rail well, coming to those heads all the way down the
- 19:33water. Oh yeah, yeah, but you an awful crime better than two
- 19:37hundred feet because a little boat running down there, I guess there. There's
- 19:40more than that down there. Now, Harry boy out of the patrols and
- 19:45his label and the light cat it down. Then he interested un following the
- 19:48stairs chopped and stardid rock along the natural path that wound over the pace of
- 19:52the cliff was steep and rough and slick, from which the fog that moved
- 19:56me sly across them, like what nervous fingers, but behind me was enchanted
- 20:00just enough to slip of the kid with every step and still managed to keep
- 20:03us putting. Half way down, we saw a trumple attacks when we had
- 20:07teeth it or what we found us about him, and a wook and yellow
- 20:10light of the lamp it struck on his face. After bringing down two hundred
- 20:15battering feet of jagged cliffs, all there was less of a man in a
- 20:18brown squeed suit a rum bottle costume. Beside me was still intact, but
- 20:22the little man inside of it was wearing thin was beginning to come apart.
- 20:29Some joke on the rest of him all because that's the worst stuff. Oh
- 20:37that's the real man. It was a man. I mean, up together
- 20:41and give me a match, Yeah boy, yeah, or like that can
- 20:47do a lot of a man's face. Hey, hey, this guy looks
- 20:49familiar to me from the back here. He looks like John Bishop. He
- 20:55shot it's his brother. I wonder the Bishop figured things to be okay from
- 20:57now on. Huh? Why somebody coming down the stairs, get over there,
- 21:04out of sight and keep quiet. As I made the support of the
- 21:08stairs, I looked up in time to see a hunch bike monthster and I'm
- 21:11a half hidden in the arriving yellow miss stuff back from the edge down the
- 21:15stairs with the Duke of Glossa again asking for another punch on his sun tan
- 21:19Jaw. I took the slippery steps so at the time as far as the
- 21:22first blind corner. When I found out that he beat me to it even
- 21:29not along but next time, I know you're in trouble. Now I know
- 21:33what gone. I turned out how to use tant sail gune. I know
- 21:37you don't chiller sudden lunch. My dog caught me off God and my thirty
- 21:44eight went spinning away into the night. He turned the right. The fog
- 21:48in the night covered with a useless creamingute. Touch my gun was all they
- 21:49needed. By the time I got up to the clubhouse service again, the
- 21:52Duke was gone. I was met to, said by the ever marry Marie,
- 21:56answering that only this time without giggles. It's just going on anyway,
- 22:00honey, baby, did you see that phony hunchback to Duke of rotting me
- 22:07ran over me shopping something about a phone call, but he got ready go
- 22:11I'm trying, don't you boys know? It's dant later, baby, later,
- 22:14right now? I want to know. Wait a minute, that place
- 22:15put there on your list? Where'd you get it? It's the dand the
- 22:18Bnadies Objailary is the best place. Minute. Then what this club look?
- 22:23Do all members have anything like that? Of course he's got the club,
- 22:26Chris. The movies have brieches and the men. I know what the man
- 22:30wear. I just saw one. If it means anything like I think it
- 22:33does, I better find Madeline Hues. But fast have you seen her?
- 22:37If she's a witch? The witch to Greenwich? Well it was the last
- 22:41time I saw her. She was walking down toward the fountains. Horrible metisop.
- 22:45She and John Bishopper, perfect couple tonight. But I think right now
- 22:51it's your CROSSI said, But thanks for the tip, I'll see it.
- 22:57Ran test the little black school out in the terrace railing and over the gate
- 23:00where the flagstone pass cut him, and I walked the past as I could
- 23:03without staying. I think. Down into the little sheltered outcove where the fountain
- 23:07was there something standing close together beside a pale marble bench, half hidden in
- 23:12the shadow. A beautiful green eyed witch and a hard knifemare with huge leathery
- 23:18wings hulking over if I've got reasons days here in town right now? Yes,
- 23:27that means one thing he's found out about us. He knows what we
- 23:33did to him. Wait a minute, I didn't lie in quart about aim,
- 23:36you dude, but you didn't object when you found out. Instead,
- 23:37you're celebrated by getting engaged to me. Oh, John, You're sorry,
- 23:42way I saw it. I've got me to worry about, Bud. He
- 23:45went to prison with the idea that you loved him, Madaline. In fact,
- 23:48he was trying to get his hands on enough money to keep you happy
- 23:52with a cups column. Okay, I'm extensive. If he couldn't afford me,
- 23:56that's his cable and his love medal. And who's problem is that?
- 24:02Well, what are you doing? Yeah? When I'm not John Ladlin,
- 24:06I've already taken care of John un Dale and you liliaro, which my one.
- 24:12So I'm gonna stragle the life over you like you did me. I'll
- 24:19stay back, you take one more step and I'll pudget. That's the laugh
- 24:22that is, because it won't they any good. You're trapped here. I'm
- 24:26gonna get you nosy and then hurry not to that all I got to do
- 24:30is walk across the dance floor, in there and out the front door,
- 24:33and in this week I won't even be noticed. It won't make it suck.
- 24:37Naha, fop for you your gun? Damn Now what Surrey lousy here?
- 24:51Take it out. I shouldered. Now I'm when I'm from a bullet.
- 24:59I could feel my shirt getting warm and thinking, I tried to follow
- 25:02him. A flight stone passed was ten miles long, and my legs were
- 25:07melting him. I saw him go to the ballroom door, and I made
- 25:11it over to the side of the building but support, but I knew I'd
- 25:15never catch him. I looked in the window and I saw him hot across
- 25:18the floor, a garish horned beast with wings shoving his way to flee him.
- 25:23I saw a milling mob of France and heapings. I was flashing out.
- 25:29I knew it. I tried to yell I stop it, but the
- 25:33crowd inside was going crazy, laughing and comporting around the beast with the wave
- 25:37and flying at him, holding and shoving him back to the door. I
- 25:42saw him fighting and then so town as the heart of pleasing creatures blows over
- 25:48him, and then everything went black. Wow are you awake, Model,
- 26:03I won't stay long. I just want to thank you for saving Madeline's life.
- 26:07The group of Gluton. Well I really just Bruce Wiley, the doctor
- 26:12said, doctor Dantamnica Hospital, Model, you were shocked. Remember four hours
- 26:18ago at the Halloween party. Oh yeah, yeah, let's see he got
- 26:22away. He got away, No he didn't. I just came from police
- 26:26headquarters where as he's confessed. Want me to tell you about it as far
- 26:29as I dreamed it. Well, as he's killed his brother John Bishop out
- 26:33in the terrace before the dance team traded his run swite suits for Bishop's Memphisophiles
- 26:37costome so we could move around inside. Yeah, that's right. Almost was
- 26:41caught there by little Harry the rum bottle. Remember but when the coast was
- 26:45clear, as he threw the body over the cliff and went into dancing Bishop's
- 26:49Mephistopheles. Look, I know this already, but after he shot me,
- 26:55he was as sent to escape. That's where it gets puggy. What happened
- 26:57then? Brother? It's handsome a piece of irony as I've ever seen.
- 27:02The Mephistopheles got them that Bishop would all tell me. Yeah, well,
- 27:07first pride that's all. The club wouldn't let us he's leave until he received
- 27:11the award and unmad. Oh it's quite a scene at police. I called
- 27:14when I thought you were a killer, showed up to take him away.
- 27:17Then we found you on meddling out on the terrace and brought you here.
- 27:19And a happy Halloween to you tube. How's meddling fine? Thanks to your
- 27:23efforts. He's waiting outside now I'll send her in. He's working on Okay,
- 27:34Hello, hello, beautiful throat. Food could have been loose. He
- 27:40could have left just in time, even had new food. His voice is
- 27:42so good. The cups was wearing a wristwatch band from the Palisades Minute Men
- 27:48Club. Gave me the switch. I knew it was Dayling the customer.
- 27:52I think it is the only reason for impersonating his brother and didn't even have
- 27:56a gun. You cut in on him. I took a lot of mood.
- 28:00Okay, don't mention that. Would you get the lights as you leave?
- 28:06You had some pretty bad things about me tonight and probably thought up the
- 28:08se was very ill. Matter of fact, I didn't get that kind of
- 28:14faith. Okay, so that'll be careful with a day. Now we can
- 28:18catch the lights on your way out for you in a minute. I'm the
- 28:22maturity something too. I haven't since good into me to night, and I've
- 28:26been thinking things are going to be distance from a Yeah, those next Swanny,
- 28:32I haven't decided. But whoever he is model, he'll be the only
- 28:36one, and he's no exact way. I'll have to see it happened first,
- 28:41daty, Okay, I'm going to wait for a while, but i'll
- 28:45be black watch the next time. Yeah, would you put your way out?
- 28:57M Madlin left sleep left with it. I got out of bed,
- 29:03went over the window and looked out the sky, and the ocean was killed
- 29:08k but over meeath the first glow of gong was starting on the horizon.
- 29:15The goblins flew screaming into the mist until next Halloween. At that moment,
- 29:22Okay moved across the pitting moon something that looked very much like a beautiful witch
- 29:30with hair sunset the cool green eyes, and I saw something else in the
- 29:38white sand of the beach, the scotted witch's custom and green and beyond it
- 29:45just grew over. I thought I saw Madalin leaning against the rock looking out
- 29:49the sea. I never found out if it was Madelon or not, because
- 29:56then the sun came out and she costume and a well God. The Adventures
- 30:15of Philip Marlowe Bringing You Raymond, Chandler's most famous character, star Gerald Moore
- 30:21and are produced and directed by Norman McDonald. Script is by Robert Mitchell and
- 30:26Gene Levitt. Feature and the cast were Eve McVeigh, John Danner, Paul
- 30:30Please welcome back. All things considered, this is an incredibly good episode.
- 30:37It was probably a lot more rare it was for programs to have Halloween based
- 30:45episodes. The Adventures of Sam Spade approached Halloween story by just going, you
- 30:52know, totally over the top sort of comedy, sort of feel what Marlowe
- 30:56does in this program, without going to any sort of weird, strange happenings
- 31:03or literal ghost or witches or anything like that, he creates It's a great
- 31:08atmosphere and mood. You get a sense that Marlowe is not a fan of
- 31:15Halloween. I get the sense it's because he's dealt with so much real death
- 31:21and darkness and so really just cannot get into this holiday at all. His
- 31:26feelings, you know, somewhat mixed and other parts he just absolutely didn't care
- 31:32for at all. It really creates just a great backdrop to the story.
- 31:37I will say that the writing for the revelation of the murderer and his motive
- 31:41was a bit melodramatic, but you had John Dayner delivering the lines, and
- 31:48so I think it came off pretty well. Actually, so this was a
- 31:52really intriguing and interesting episode. I thought it was kind of an interesting contrast
- 31:57with Crime and Peter Change, because Marlowe was a lot more hesitant about putting
- 32:04on a costume than Peter Chambers was. But then again, Peter Chambers was
- 32:08just going to a normal masquerade ball, and I think kind of Marlowe's mixed
- 32:15feelings on Halloween may have contributed a little bit to is reluctance. Anyway,
- 32:21listener comments and feedback, and I know we just finished Man from Homicide yesterday,
- 32:24but since we're not going to have any more episodes, I did receive
- 32:29an email from Christy who writes in regarding the second episode we played of Man
- 32:36from Homicide. If we were still playing the show, I would have waited
- 32:39until it's stay in the rotation, but since we're done with it after this
- 32:44week, we'll go ahead and address it now. She says, I've been
- 32:49mostly listening to Sherlock Holmes, but catch up every few days on the rest
- 32:52of it. Today I heard the third episode of Men from Homicide, and
- 32:58Wow, it was dark, like really dark. I can handle most of
- 33:02it, but this was almost too much. How he handled each He's dead
- 33:07felt overly cold and almost cruel. I can definitely see that Lieutenant Dana was
- 33:15a very cold character and will really the show ended up being a summer replacement.
- 33:22You can definitely see reasons why it wasn't picked up. You know,
- 33:29this is the type of thing, you know, I think might have gone
- 33:34over, Say if we had a radio in the nineteen seventies when you had
- 33:39the Death Wish movies and Dirty Harry really didn't work too well in the nineteen
- 33:45fifties, And I definitely would not probably enjoy old time radio detectives if they
- 33:52were all like Lieutenant Dana. But if there's a spectrum from nicest detective to
- 33:58meanest detective, Lieutenant Dana over on the mean side, with probably mister Keen
- 34:05Tracer of lost Persons his polar opposite. And I guess one reason I do
- 34:10answer this on Philip Marlowe is I think that Marlow really, you know,
- 34:15I find it fascinating. You know, we played Pat Novac for Hire right,
- 34:22you know, before this, and also opposite Philip Marlowe on Wednesday.
- 34:30To me, it does create kind of a contrast. I mean, I
- 34:34think that both Pat Novak for Hire and Man from Homicide have merits, but
- 34:43they don't get the hard boiled detective genre exactly right. And I think Philip
- 34:47Marlowe comes as close as any show does to that, because it deals with
- 34:53a seedier side of life, and with some dark moments, and with a
- 35:00he who is capable of unleashing righteous fury on you. Nevertheless, there's also
- 35:07a certain touch of kindness, compassion, humanity, and even some wistfulness that
- 35:14you'll find in Philip marlow that you won't find in heroes. While perhaps entertaining,
- 35:21may be a bit too hardcore for a lot of us. All Right,
- 35:24well, that will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with
- 35:29Nick Carter, and join us next Wednesday for another episode of the Adventures of
- 35:34Philip Marlow. In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great
