- 0:00Speaker 1: Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher, once said,
- 0:05Speaker 1: at the end of each day, reflect on how you
- 0:08Speaker 1: have lived it. The Stoics were some of the most
- 0:14Speaker 1: resilient and wise people in history. They faced many challenges
- 0:18Speaker 1: in their lives, from exile to imprisonment to death, but
- 0:22Speaker 1: they always managed to find inner peace and serenity. One
- 0:28Speaker 1: secret to the stoics resilience was their nightly routine. Every night,
- 0:32Speaker 1: before bed, they would take time to reflect on their day,
- 0:36Speaker 1: express gratitude, and prepare for the next day. These simple
- 0:41Speaker 1: habits helped the Stoics to stay calm, focused, and in
- 0:45Speaker 1: control of their lives. When you rise in the morning,
- 0:52Speaker 1: tell yourself, I will meet with people today who are meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, envious,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and surly. All of these things have happened to them before,
- 1:05Speaker 1: and they will happen to them again because they cannot
- 1:08Speaker 1: see the truth and understand the nature of things. I
- 1:13Speaker 1: have studied the nature of the good and the bad,
- 1:16Speaker 1: and I know that the bad man does nothing good,
- 1:18Speaker 1: either intentionally or unintentionally. The good man, on the other hand,
- 1:24Speaker 1: does nothing bad, either intentionally or unintentionally. Marcus Aurelius used
- 1:33Speaker 1: his knightly routine to remind himself of the things that
- 1:36Speaker 1: he could not control the behavior of others and the
- 1:39Speaker 1: things that he could control his own thoughts and actions.
- 1:43Speaker 1: This helped him to stay calm and centered even in
- 1:46Speaker 1: the face of difficult challenges. Stoicism is an ancient philosophy
- 1:56Speaker 1: that teaches us how to live a good and meaningful
- 1:59Speaker 1: life regard wardless of our circumstances. The Stoics believed that
- 2:04Speaker 1: we should focus on what we can control and accept
- 2:07Speaker 1: what we cannot control. They also taught that we should
- 2:11Speaker 1: live in accordance with nature and that we should be
- 2:14Speaker 1: grateful for the good things in our lives. One of
- 2:20Speaker 1: the best ways to incorporate stoicism into your life is
- 2:24Speaker 1: to establish a knightly routine. A stoic nightly routine is
- 2:29Speaker 1: a set of habits that you can do every night
- 2:32Speaker 1: before bed to help you relax, reflect and prepare for
- 2:36Speaker 1: the next day. There are many benefits to having a
- 2:41Speaker 1: stoic nightly routine. First, it can help you to reduce
- 2:46Speaker 1: stress and anxiety. When you have a routine, you know
- 2:51Speaker 1: what to expect and you feel more in control. This
- 2:54Speaker 1: can help you to relax and unwind at the end
- 2:56Speaker 1: of the day. Second, a stoic nightly routine can help
- 3:03Speaker 1: you to reflect on your day and learn from your experiences.
- 3:08Speaker 1: By reflecting on your day, you can identify what went
- 3:11Speaker 1: well and what you could have done better. This information
- 3:15Speaker 1: can help you to make better choices in the future. Third,
- 3:22Speaker 1: a stoic nightly routine can help you to cultivate gratitude.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can improve your overall
- 3:31Speaker 1: well being. By taking some time each night to reflect
- 3:34Speaker 1: on the things you are grateful for, you can train
- 3:37Speaker 1: your mind to focus on the positive. Finally, a stoic
- 3:44Speaker 1: nightly routine can help you to prepare for the next day.
- 3:48Speaker 1: By taking some time to plan and reflect before bed,
- 3:52Speaker 1: you can wake up feeling refreshed and focused. If you
- 3:58Speaker 1: are interested in improving your life, I encourage you to
- 4:01Speaker 1: try establishing a stoic nightly routine. In the following sections,
- 4:06Speaker 1: we will discuss nine stoic habits that you can do
- 4:09Speaker 1: every night before bed. One. Disconnect from external stimuli. One
- 4:27Speaker 1: of the most important things you can do to prepare
- 4:29Speaker 1: for a good night's sleep is to disconnect from external stimuli.
- 4:34Speaker 1: This means turning off your phone, computer, and TV and
- 4:38Speaker 1: finding a quiet place to relax. The blue light emitted
- 4:43Speaker 1: from electronic devices can interfere with sleep, so it's important
- 4:46Speaker 1: to avoid using them in the hour before bed. Instead,
- 4:49Speaker 1: try reading a book, listening to calming music, or taking
- 4:52Speaker 1: a warm bath. Two. Reflect on your day. Taking some
- 5:01Speaker 1: time each night to reflect on your day can help
- 5:03Speaker 1: you to learn from your experiences and cultivate gratitude. It
- 5:07Speaker 1: can also help you to identify any areas where you
- 5:09Speaker 1: need to improve. To reflect on your day, simply sit
- 5:14Speaker 1: down in a quiet place and think about the events
- 5:17Speaker 1: of the day, both positive and negative. What went well,
- 5:24Speaker 1: What could you have done better? What are you grateful for? Three?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Express gratitude. Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can improve
- 5:38Speaker 1: your overall well being. By taking some time each night
- 5:42Speaker 1: to reflect on the things you are grateful for, you
- 5:45Speaker 1: can train your mind to focus on the positive. To
- 5:50Speaker 1: express gratitude, simply make a list of three things you
- 5:53Speaker 1: are grateful for from the day. This could be anything
- 5:56Speaker 1: from your health, to your loved ones to a delicious meal.
- 6:00Speaker 1: You can also write a gratitude journal or keep a
- 6:03Speaker 1: gratitude jar. Four plan for tomorrow. Taking some time to
- 6:12Speaker 1: plan and reflect before bed can help you to wake
- 6:15Speaker 1: up feeling refreshed and focused. It can also help you
- 6:18Speaker 1: to reduce stress and anxiety, as you will know what
- 6:21Speaker 1: to expect and feel more in control. To plan for tomorrow,
- 6:28Speaker 1: simply take a few minutes to think about what you
- 6:30Speaker 1: need to do. This could include making a to do list,
- 6:33Speaker 1: packing your lunch, or setting your clothes out for the
- 6:35Speaker 1: next day. Five. Prepare for sleep. Create a relax in
- 6:44Speaker 1: bedtime routine that will help you to wind down and
- 6:47Speaker 1: fall asleep more easily. This could include taking a warm bath,
- 6:51Speaker 1: reading a book, or listening to calming music. It's also
- 6:56Speaker 1: important to establish a regular sleep schedule and stick to
- 7:00Speaker 1: do it as much as possible, even on weekends. This
- 7:03Speaker 1: will help to regulate your body's natural sleep wake cycle. Six.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Review your goals. Taking some time each night to review
- 7:18Speaker 1: your goals can help you to stay motivated and on track.
- 7:22Speaker 1: It can also help you to identify any areas where
- 7:25Speaker 1: you need to make adjustments. To review your goals, simply
- 7:31Speaker 1: take a few minutes to think about your long term
- 7:33Speaker 1: and short term goals. What do you want to achieve
- 7:37Speaker 1: in the next year. In the next five years in
- 7:43Speaker 1: the next ten years. Once you have reviewed your goals,
- 7:49Speaker 1: identify any areas where you need to make adjustments. For example,
- 7:53Speaker 1: if you want to get in shape, you may need
- 7:55Speaker 1: to start exercising more regularly, or if you want to
- 7:59Speaker 1: get ahead at work, you may need to start coming
- 8:01Speaker 1: in early or staying late. Seven Forgive yourself. Everyone makes mistakes.
- 8:13Speaker 1: If you did something you regret today, forgive yourself and
- 8:16Speaker 1: move on. Dwelling on your mistakes will only make you
- 8:20Speaker 1: feel worse. To forgive yourself, simply acknowledge your mistake and
- 8:26Speaker 1: then let it go. Remind yourself that you are human
- 8:30Speaker 1: and that everyone makes mistakes. Then focus on learning from
- 8:34Speaker 1: your mistake and moving on. Eight Reflect on death. The
- 8:44Speaker 1: Stoics believed that meditating on death could help us live
- 8:47Speaker 1: more fully and appreciate each day. To reflect on death,
- 8:53Speaker 1: simply take a few minutes to think about your own mortality.
- 8:57Speaker 1: What does it mean to you that you will eventually
- 9:01Speaker 1: How do you want to spend your time before you die.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Reflecting on death can help you to prioritize what is
- 9:08Speaker 1: truly important in life and to let go of the
- 9:11Speaker 1: things that are not. Nine Practice mindfulness meditation Mindfulness meditation
- 9:21Speaker 1: is a powerful practice that can help you to reduce stress,
- 9:24Speaker 1: improve sleep, and cultivate inner peace. To practice mindfulness meditation,
- 9:32Speaker 1: simply sit in a comfortable position and focus on your breath.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Notice the rise and fall of your chest as you
- 9:39Speaker 1: inhale and exhale. If your mind wanders, gently bring it
- 9:45Speaker 1: back to your breath. Start by meditating for just a
- 9:50Speaker 1: few minutes each night. As you become more comfortable with meditation,
- 9:55Speaker 1: you can gradually increase the amount of time you spend meditating.
- 10:08Speaker 1: These are just nine stoic habits that you can do
- 10:11Speaker 1: every night before bed to improve your life. By following
- 10:15Speaker 1: these habits, you can reduce stress, improve sleep, cultivate gratitude,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and live a more fulfilling life. It is important to
- 10:26Speaker 1: note that you do not have to do all of
- 10:28Speaker 1: these habits every night. Start by doing a few of
- 10:32Speaker 1: the habits that you are most interested in. As you
- 10:35Speaker 1: become more consistent with your routine, you can gradually add
- 10:39Speaker 1: more habits. Here are some tips for incorporating a stoic
- 10:45Speaker 1: nightly routine into your life. Start small. Don't try to
- 10:51Speaker 1: do all of these habits every night at first. Start
- 10:54Speaker 1: by doing one or two habits that you are most
- 10:56Speaker 1: interested in. Be consistent. Try to do your nightly routine
- 11:03Speaker 1: at the same time each night. This will help you
- 11:06Speaker 1: to develop a habit. Find a quiet place to relax.
- 11:12Speaker 1: It is important to find a quiet and relaxing place
- 11:15Speaker 1: to practice your nightly routine. This could be your bedroom,
