- speaker-0: Welcome to the Mark Workman Show and thanks for joining us again. We're just so glad to have you back. This is our Well Within episodes that we do, that we just focus in on encouraging people to kind of make small choices, small swaps, and and look at what they're doing on a daily basis with their diet and really with a focus on the, you know, having the protein first and veggies and and if you're gonna have a sweet tooth that have that at the end. And as we move into this next season here, we got ninety days to the end of the year. So it it's really kind of the the way we end our years is a lot of times just a lot of a lot of extra food and and and really it can be a stressful time for a lot of people. I know for me, even when I was younger, I used to think about you know, I I always always heard the stories of you'd gain 10 pounds over Thanksgiving and those kind of things. And it used to just stress me out terrible, to be honest with you. so as we move into this holiday season, Kathy and I thought we would talk about, you know, kind of preparing yourself for this season, you know, making a plan, thinking about it, and removing the stress of this season and really finding the ability to enjoy this process of celebration. There's nothing wrong with celebration. It's absolutely necessary for life, or life would be pretty dang boring, wouldn't it not be? So celebration's important. So we we want to do that, but we want to encourage you to do it well and do do this next season with a plan and and think about that. So anyway, thanks, Kathy, and here we go. We're gonna have a good show. speaker-1: Hello. October one. Welcome to the gauntlet. You know, speaker-0: Yeah, well. speaker-1: the average American will gain 10 to 12 pounds between now and January 1st. So this is a great time to grab the reins. You can either get ready to, you know, add those 12 pounds and hit hit the 2027 feeling horrible, or we can go into 2027 feeling pretty much in control. So we've got some great tips to share today. speaker-0: Yeah, and in the in it it real we can't understate that I think it is a stressful time, you know. there's there's people that you know look forward to the food side, right? They're actually almost thinking about Thanksgiving even now. The pie my dad used to do that, you know. He'd I'm gonna make this pie, coconut cream, I'm gonna make two b pump pumpkins pies. And so he's thinking about it in October, September. speaker-1: It it's an addiction. We've been w we're addicted. We've been hijacked on so many levels. And so we hope to break it down today so people can understand. I always say if you can name the game Then you have a choice whether you want to play it or how you want to play it. So we're here to help you play your game wisely and to your advantage for your health, body, mind, and spirit. It's really you know, we have a lot of suicides during this time. And when we kind of understand how our body's working, things start making more sense and we have choices. speaker-0: Yeah, and you know, e I never think of Halloween as a holiday. a lot of the culture does. I do not even recognize it in my my way of thinking, but I was sharing with y with you the other day that I was listening to a radio program where they were having a debate on whether it was too early to celebrate start setting up for their yards and their candies and all that kind of stuff, September first. you know, Halloween's into October and the big debate was, no, it's never too early for Halloween and the focus on the candy and what candies they were gonna hand out and you know, so the sweets were just highly, highly speaker-1: That's what we're programmed for. Exactly. speaker-0: it's in the culture. And then so if you're not thinking about a plan as you go into these holidays for the idea of how you're going to handle meals, how you're going to handle different situations, then then you're kind of in what's called you know decision making in the circumstances, right? So you're just waiting till you get there to make a ch choice or a decision, which is never a good idea on anything in life. You need to think about it before you get there and already have a decision. speaker-1: Yeah. Mindsets are going to be really powerful through this season. Yeah. speaker-0: So anyway, so we're what we're gonna start with today is we're gonna we're gonna get into the show here in just a few minutes, this subject matter, because I think it's a powerful one. But we're gonna start off with the problem and go over our wheel of torture that we do just about every time. And then we'll lead into how from the wheel of torture into some of the h tips we have plus some of the Roadblocks you can run into during the holidays that you'll need to navigate. So let's talk about the problem first and we'll start there and let you rip. speaker-1: The problem is 93% of Americans are metabolically unhealthy. And we don't really even know what that word metabolic means. Metabolic is just how does your body process energy? The number one hormone of the body is insulin resistance. So I always like to think of insulin as the electrician. It's the electrician's job to get power throughout the body. And as you can see on the wheel, from obesity, type two diabetes, Strokes, heart issues, high cholesterol, neuropathy, PCOS, erectile dysfunction, Alzheimer's, all of these things on this spinny wheel actually at the core is insulin resistance. But the way the medical is set up, it's gonna pull off, it's gonna separate us into all these little body parts, and then it's gonna give you a pill to manage your symptoms. So recognizing If you have insulin resistance, are you noticing skin tags? Did you know skin tags are a sign of high insulin in the body? Belly fat, because we're putting it in our visceral or in the visceral fat around your organs. That's a very dangerous place for it. And this is something that has just come up in the last few generations, I guess I would say. Generation is a hundred years. speaker-0: No, generation is about twenty five years. speaker-1: Okay, so anyway, about the last forty years, we've just seen a total spike in a lot of these health issues and and the root cause is insulin resistance. So it's important for us to understand what that is. So today I hope you come away with some understanding of what insulin resistance is. Insulin resistance is when your cells are full. So when we keep cramming more and more energy into our cells, so your body can handle one teaspoon of sugar at a time. If you have more than one teaspoon, If you have more than one teaspoon, then your pancreas needs to fire up and make more insulin. Insulin is a growth hormone. So now we're in damage mode and storage mode. That's why you're gaining weight, you're lethargic. And so when that insulin is high, I would say the only thing I can come up to rhyme with insulin is high, you're gonna die. When insulin is low, fat can go. But insulin is also like a lighter fluid, it's causing inflammation. You know, we've been told, cut back on your salt. Salt is causing high blood pressure. It's not the salt. It's the sugar. Sugars blaming the salt. You actually have to have salt. It's what's in your bones. It's in your muscles. And when we don't have enough of it, we get osteoporosis. We get muscle cramps. All of those things. And so the marketing has done a really good job at making sugar not a big deal. And it's a huge deal. speaker-0: Yeah. And so and then we're entering into a season where actually sugar's gonna be our focus in some ways, not only with Halloween, but with Thanksgiving when we should be focusing on the proteins and the veggies first. We're literally thinking about the pies and the cakes and the treats. speaker-1: Sure. And in these days, like, okay, so October has Halloween. Well, we make it the whole month, not just a day. And that's the other big problem. And again, once you get started on the sugar, now you're talking about a chemic chemical imbalance in your body that it's not about willpower. It's about you have just opened up the cravings and the crashes and the cravings and the crashes by adding the sugar. This Is just a little bag of stuff that was thrown to my grandkids at a parade. And in when you realize that as an adult with five liters of blood, you can handle one teaspoon of sugar, and then your body has to work overtime to create more and more insulin. And again, as that insulin tries to cram too much energy into your cells, that's what insulin resistance is. Your cells are resistant and they're actually just trying to protect you from you. And your body's working very hard. So now it's gotta put that extra energy into your visceral fat, into your liver. One in four adults has fatty liver. Children are now actually being born with fatty liver because we're so overloaded with sugar. speaker-0: So what do you know I know this answer, but you we've talked about on the show before is the what's the n the typical amount of sugar teaspoons per day a person an average American is getting? speaker-1: Average American is eating 46 teaspoons of sugar a day. And a lot of times they don't even know it. So you have a couple Cokes and you're at 70 grams. And then you're adding your breads, your pastas, your fruits. A lot of those things also just convert to sugar. So they're invisible. We think we're eating well. You're gonna have a bowl of oatmeal and add some cranberries and a little bit of brown sugar. Then you're gonna have glass of orange juice and you've just poo limit you know, your limit is your body is just in high use. speaker-0: Insulin mode. One teaspoon, the body in five liters of blood can handle one teaspoon at a time. Yeah. And we're doing 46 a day. Yeah. We are how many times of a factor of how much overdoing it 46 times? 46x. Yeah. speaker-1: Our great great grandparents were not when you drink a Coke, you're drinking more sugar in one Coke than our great great grandparents would probably have in a day or a week. Yeah. Yeah. So, and the, you know, the obviously the flowers have been so modified, so our body can't handle those. Those are causing gut issues. You see a lot more gluten intolerance, and it's because our food has changed dramatically. When you put bad fuel or let's just say you put a your garden hose into your car, it isn't gonna run for very long. But we're trying to run on empty empty calories, empty fuel. Our body wants to be in this place of homeostasis and we are constantly bombarding it. Now we're talking about an adult with five teas with a teaspoon and five liters of blood. I guess I as a grandparent and a and a mother, what about the children? When our children this is what's thrown at them at a parade and they wake up in the morning and they have a bowl of cereal, their insulin spikes. Then they have crashes and then they're hungry, they're irritable, they're they're crabby, the behavior issues. So when we start talking about, you know, you talk to any school teacher and they'll say, my gosh, the kids' behavior is horrible. Well, we're we're talking about a bunch of little addicts because we hit get that dopamine rush every time we have the sugar. And so those are some big things to be aware of. speaker-0: So when you think about the holidays for you, ten years ago as you thought about the holidays, what was what was your first thought as we'd go into the holidays? speaker-1: My first thought was I am gonna get those candy corns and I'm gonna mix them with a thing of peanuts and I just love that sugar high. And literally the when I'd get up in the morning, the balls on my feet would hurt, my joints would hurt. And when I started making that connection, that's when I could name the game, then I could change the game. So I don't even think about those things anymore. when I think about the holidays and of course you wanna make it special for the grandkids. But I've totally gotten away from using candy as a as a tool. speaker-0: Yeah. And for me, the the as the holidays approached, I just remember the conversations. They were so clear as day. grandma and owen would talk about coconut cream pie. Dad talked about lemon meringue and chocolate and pies were a big deal. Th they never th thought about the turkey as much as they thought about the pies. Sure. You know, and then grandma would make I wanna say it's everything cake or Better than whatever yeah. I I can't remember what it was, but she speaker-1: Better than everything, Kate. Yeah. speaker-0: but anyway, they that was the focus and I'm talking September. speaker-1: Why wouldn't it be? I mean, we're programmed. We watch the television. You see all the family sitting around eating. And so yes, all of those holidays have been hijacked by food and we've been marketed to, and it's working beautifully. And when you understand the food industry is owned by the pharmaceuticals, you can see the spinny wheel that we just talked about, that wheel of torture. We're we're on that spinny wheel. And if you want to get off the spinny wheel, you have to understand. And and it's difficult to get the sugar out of our system. And that's why I love the Unicity, because Unicity is an amazing tool that helps boost your natural GLP one. So now I'm not hungry and I can make better choices. Yeah. speaker-0: So let's start with some of the ideas and tips we may have today. What would be the what would be your first starting tip going into the holidays for anybody who's kind of because I never I know people are concerned, they think about it, I don't want to put on 10 pounds, but I sure want to have a good time. speaker-1: Well, and you hear a lot of people say, Okay, w I I don't wanna I would I don't wanna do any program or whatever until after the holidays because they have every intention of of of gluttony, of overdoing it, because that's what we're programmed for. So there's almost this fear and and I can understand that. Like when I first heard about intermittent fasting and you know, people were fasting through their breakfast, I'm like, Well, I don't wanna give up my breakfast. So there is a fear, and I just wanna encourage people that You don't have to do things dramatically. Start with where you're at and do some swaps. Do some simple swaps. If you're like, I could never give that up. Well, find out some ways that you can change it. Like for bread. I hear people say, I could never give up bread. Well, we've swapped over to low carb tortilla shells. And, you know, that was a really good swap. You can have your sandwiches in it. You can, you know, have those. And I find that we don't even really use those as much anymore. But find something that works. All this sugar that we're doing, another great swap that we've found is Chalk Zero. So in the the difference with the Chalk Zero is it's got a lot of fiber in it. So you're getting you're getting your, and and of course we're talking about 92% cacao, one little square satisfies that sweet tooth, but it doesn't leave you craving more and more where this, you're not gonna be able to stop. It's designed to keep you coming back for more and more and more. That's what sugar does. So speaker-0: Yeah, so the Chalk Zero has carbohydrates in it, but the offset with the fiber, I think it's one net carb or two. One or two. speaker-1: It's it's on here, it's seven carbs and seven fiber. So yeah. And that's the other part when when they started processing our food, they've pulled all the fiber out because fiber makes you feel fuller faster, and they don't want you full. They want you eating the whole thing. And fiber is also very, very important. And we have a simple little protocol here. This has seven different fibers. in soluble and insoluble. And what it does is actually healing and feeding that gut biome. we're finding that our gut biome for most people is very messed up because of medications and the food that we're eating. And so by adding fiber back in, you're going to feel fuller longer. You're not going to have the the cravings and the crashes. And so these simple little tools with unity are giving you that what I say, the willpower in a bottle. speaker-0: Right. So s going into the holidays, plan would be you know, simple things like don't arrive starving. Yeah. You know, you know, hoping to stuff yourself, you know. I know that that was a thought is to kind of arrive and I'm gonna eat as much as I can. speaker-1: Well I used to have a lot of my clients that through the weight loss industry to say, Well, I'm just gonna fast all day. Well, then you go in there starving. So you never wanna show up at a food event hungry. I always encourage you have some protein before you go, have your balance before you go, and and get there satisfied and not starving. And by all means don't stand by the tables. speaker-0: Right. That's right, exactly. So w what you have some h helpful hints. What speaker-1: some of the other ones are focus on the people and the conversations. because the food hijacks the event a lot of times. and if you hear it says follow the one plate rule, you know, focus on when you go to something like for me personally, I love a good pecan pie. So I know that's gonna be my one thing I'm gonna have. And so all the other is just off the list. also the one plate rule. You know, and I you've seen plates that have they're huge. The plates are huge now and they are high. But choose wisely what you want to put on that plate. Start with your protein, start with your fiber, and that's gonna give you the self-control to not have to eat all the other stuff. But when we start, usually when you show up in an event, there's a lot of different snack things. What that does is it boom shoots your dopamine. Dopamine then shuts off the leptin. Leptin's the hormone that says you're full. And now you can just Eat and eat and eat till you're miserable. So those are some of the tips I would recommend. speaker-0: I saw one in here, limit liquid calories from soda. We we we go to a Thanksgiving joint place, a family that has treated us very kindly for many years, and they always ask, Mark, would you like an Italian soda? Yeah. You know, I'm sure it's loaded with syrups and sugars and creams and this and that. You know. So I think a lot of times we do not we do ignore the liquid sometimes. speaker-1: Well, think of eggnog. Yes. You know, just the Cokes and all of those things are gonna spike again, that dopamine rush, and you you just that now you just can't stop. It really is an addiction. We can all look at the alcoholic, but it it's no different. And that's why we're seeing so much fatty liver. It used to be just for alcoholics, and it's not just for alcoholics anymore. Like I said, one in four adults has a fatty liver. the other things you can do again, prioritize your protein and And and just go in with a a mindset of how do I wanna come out? Because you're gonna come out, like I remember coming out like you have to unbutton your pants, you know, and and you're just miserable. You're bloated, you're gassy, you're lethargic. And so Thanksgiving generally and Christmas are those like who gets the couch? speaker-0: Yeah. I think it's a powerful point actually is a lot of times we don't feel good after, you know, you know, you've mentioned sometimes people say I'm gonna start my program after after my vacation. I'm going two weeks and I'm really gonna party like Hardy and I'll be back and I'll do it then. Right. but the after and how you feel, I've had those experiences where I was even in beyond there's shame involved a little bit. Like my gosh, what did I just do to myself and I didn't feel good and my pants didn't button. after just a couple days of overindulging because your body reacts to that, right? It probably swells up actually. Yeah. Who knows what happens. But I think the after is needs to be considered as much as the before. We don't think about that very much. I think that's a good point. speaker-1: You know, another good thing you can do after a meal is just standing and doing calf raises, taking a walk, because your muscles are the number one glucose sucking. So if you eat a big meal and you lay down on the couch, that glucose is trying to figure out where to go. But if you get up and you walk, you do some calf raises, that sucks those glucose and it gets your body processing it. And keeps that blood sugar from spiking. So you're not having the cravings. And again, when you you your blood sugar spikes, insulin comes up, your blood sugar drops. Now you feel low energy, like, my gosh, I just need to eat again. And your insulin is still high, trying to clean up the mess from the last one. And you can have high insulin for 10 to 15 years before it ever shows up on your blood work. And I thought that was really fascinating. I'm like, well, how does that work? Well, because your body is so amazingly made, it it's always trying to adjust, again, to keep us from killing ourselves. So your pancreas is going to make more and more insulin. So your blood sugars look good. And with the more insulin, insulin becomes this bully and it starts trying to cram the energy into the cells or cramming it in places that doesn't belong. And then we have the neuropathy, we have the brain fog. We have all of these things because energy is not getting up to the attic. It's not getting down to the basement. And we're having a lot of these other all these health issues that are connected to that. And again, you go into your doctor and like I just don't have any energy. I don't feel good. And they'll say, you're probably depressed. Let's get you on an antidepressant. when our guts are messed up, you you're Your guts make 90% of your serotonin that goes to your brain. So we're seeing a lot more anxiety and depression. but if you think about what's in the schools, again, for the kids, the foods they're eating, they go to the lunch program and they're gonna have a bowl of cereal or they're gonna have a maple bar for breakfast, and then they're gonna have a crash. So they're gonna go to the Coke machine and get a Coke. And then at lunch, they're gonna have a lot of carbohydrates, whether it's the pizzas, the tacos, the Burgers, whatever, with all the extra carbohydrates. And so seeing our younger people is what kind of breaks my heart. And why this to me is such a cool protocol. It's just simple, it's safe enough for pregnant women, nursing women, children, everybody. So it has no side effects that are negative. It's only the positive side effects that's going to give you some self control. you're gonna drink a drink that's it's a natural herbal tea that actually gonna boost, like I said, your natural GLP one so you're not hungry and you can make good choices. Right. speaker-0: Well we always hear about this season is it it's such a tough time. This time of season for people, they just you know, they just really struggle at Christmas and they struggle at Thanksgiving and whatever that loneliness feeling comes from and you know, and what if if all the time it's been, it's been from the food. You know what I mean? Like we've just eating so poorly that we don't feel good and it leads us into this next few stages of getting in our own head and thinking certain ways or nobody likes me, or whatever goes on in people's brains, right? What if it What's the other speaker-1: It's that, it's less sunlight. We're not getting the sunlight. We have darker days. We're not getting outside. We're not getting into nature. I just feel like going out and standing on the grass is so is such a reset and we're so bombarded with information, our telephones, technology, all of those things are coming against us. But the food, we know too much now to not be able to look at some of the obvious things that we're we're doing to ourselves. speaker-0: Yeah. I have here one of the things I wrote down on my list was to I I feel like we should be thinking about the holidays way before we get to So we decide before we get to the table what we're gonna do. I believe we should decide that's how I see it, you know. speaker-1: Yeah, you never want to make a plan in the middle of crisis. You want to have a plan. speaker-0: Yeah, I wrote down here plan indulgences indulgences rather than eating impulsively. Sure. Meaning you talked about the pecan pie and I can't think of one that I dream about, but you know, I probably think about mashed potatoes to be honest with you. Yeah. as the add on that is overdone, you know. Right. But I do think just Plenty you can have an you can have something really nice. It's okay. They're treats, they're wonderful actually. You just don't need ten pounds of it. Well speaker-1: The other thing is there's other other tricks with that too. You know, you can have mashed cauliflower. People say, it tastes just like potatoes. Or cook up your potatoes the day before and chill them and then make mashed potatoes the next day. That keeps that sugar starch from spiking. It it changes the starch in it. So there's a lot of little things you can do and we never want people to feel I don't want to preach deprivation. I wanna I wanna talk mind shifts in in swaps. And so you're in control. You're not so many people and I know I was in this place of feeling out of control. Things in my freezer were talking to me. And then you'd just get this, hey, okay, you y you know, you y you fat chick, just go eat it all. So almost like an abusive thing, you would eat the rest of it so you didn't have to look at it. So I became the garbage disposal. speaker-0: It's something I talk about quite a bit on the show here is that I I think we should be moving from a situation where we're doing things out of habit. An automatic a habit is an automatic decision in in every situation with a certain behavior that I'm gonna overeat, that I'm gonna overindulge or whatever. And we should be leading to maturity in our thinking and the way we do behaviors to self-control. Right. The ability to choose something and have self-control over or over what I do in the moment at all Also affects the outcome that we just chatted about a few minutes ago, the but on inability to button your pants, right? That's the outcome. So we're we we're always wanting to encourage people to lead to this idea of having self-control. You do have control over the outcomes and during the process, and it you don't have to just act out of maybe cultural pressure from your family because that's how they do it. They all we we overdo the food, the tables, we actually have three tables of food and everyone goes crazy, right? That's the big celebration when really it should be about conversations, relationships. If you turn the focuses and start thinking differently, it'd be it'll become a habit to have self-control. Well self-control can be speaker-1: Yeah. Right. Self control well, it's a it's a fruit of the spirit. Exactly. but we've been programmed, and this is where I think you need to think about what you're thinking about. And we've been programmed by design, by marketing specialists. They know exactly what the bliss point is to get you coming back for more, take the fiber out so you're never full or never satisfied. you know, really it I I used to think about 'cause I used to really like Diet Coke and salt and vinegar chips. And then when you heard when I realized that okay, the first two bites are the best because that's the dopamine, I'm not gonna get any more satisfaction eating it all. So even those great big sipper cups, if you just take two sips, you're you're satisfied. That's it's never going to get any better. So changing those mindsets and understanding what's going on under the hood in the body, that was huge for me because I was doing all external things, you know, like eat less, move more. Okay, I'm just gonna, you know, go through these holidays and I'll deal with the mess later. And I guess I really wanna encourage people, we have a lot more power going through it if you choose to educate yourself because there's like I said, by design we're being marketed to and we're pushed down the the gauntlet, so to speak. speaker-0: Yeah. Yeah. So what would be a trigger? Any triggers you can think of that as you go into the hall like a trigger would be something that kinda causes behavior in you that you kinda lose self control, you know? I was just I was just trying to think of something that is an example from that I can remember as a as our household was very competitive. and I remember when I started changing my diet and eating and thinking about these things ten years ago or more. And I remember the idea of I would take a limited plate. I had my turkey, some veggies and stuff, and I didn't fill it. And I remember I can remember being told, that's all you're gonna have. speaker-1: Yeah. Because Misery loves company. They were speaker-0: Pressuring me to actually join their club of comp and it was a competition who could eat the most in some ways. Yeah. And I think those are all real little things you need to think about. You don't re you don't think about that, you know, beforehand, but yeah, you know, my family likes to do this and they're you know, they're gonna fill their plate and go back for a second, fill it again, and it's a competition in some ways, you know. Yeah, there are there's a lot of subtleties to this. speaker-1: A lot of societal things that are definitely, you know, people just say, I've gone to other countries and, you know, they they actually lost weight or we have exchange students that come here that put on a automatic twenty five pounds because there are societal things and even for me personally, as we were changing our habits, you know, we used to have a lot of people over to our house and you think about all the different things you have to have. Well, we eat so simply now, I'm like, I don't know if anybody else would be satisfied on what we eat, but Now I've gotten to where I've I've got some recipes that I would be confident with and you can have a whole meal and people will go, Wow, and we didn't have any carbs. So, but it takes time to make those shifts. And I wouldn't want to put it on anybody to have to change everything, but if you can change a few things and again go into it knowing there is a game, knowing that we've been programmed. And like for me, I have changed, like when you think, it's comfort food. That's the big thing. We're going into comfort food season. No, it's uncomfortable to be able to get in your pants. It's uncomfortable to not be able to go do the things you want to do. It's uncomfortable to be bloated, gassy, miserable, low energy. So we have to rewire what we think is comfort. We have to rewire what we think is a treat. If I I'll look at things now, and I know I might sound a little over dramatic, but I'm like, poison, poison, poison. And then you know, I it it just again, I'm naming the game. This is poison to me. It might not you know, you you you do you, but I'm gonna do me and I know I feel a whole lot better. I love being this consistent weight. I love my clothes fitting, I love having good energy. speaker-0: Okay, well as we we're gonna move to close down here, but we're gonna go over the solution and with that, and and and and and in the solution we're gonna reference this some of the tips we've given, some going into the holiday season and how unicity can be a big help to that. So let's just talk about the solution and and we'll finish up with that. speaker-1: The solution that I've found, and again, after being in the weight loss industry, counting calories, tracking, all of that stuff gets to be a bondage. And I used to tell my clients, we don't want to trade one bondage for another bondage. And this is why I love the unicity, because it's affordable, it's simple. I'm not adding something, I'm replacing. We were already buying drinks that we were drinking and that, you know, we went to the low calorie or the no calorie drinks. And But this is a dollar seventy-four a packet. I was in the gas station the other day walking through the aisle and aisle and aisle of drinks, and you couldn't get anything for less than three to four bucks.
