- 0:09Speaker 1: What is going on?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Everyone, Welcome into another episode of to check O Daily.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Andrew de Checko, Eagles beat reporter for insidethebirds dot Com.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We're gonna have a little fun today because I am
- 0:20Speaker 2: about to give you my way too early Eagles fifty
- 0:23Speaker 2: three man roster projection.
- 0:25Speaker 1: But just the offense.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I'm gonna break this up into two podcasts, Offense today,
- 0:30Speaker 2: Defense tomorrow, and then you could read the full story
- 0:33Speaker 2: on Wednesday on Inside the Birds dot Com. By the way,
- 0:37Speaker 2: speaking of Inside the Birds dot Com, I hope everybody
- 0:39Speaker 2: had an opportunity to check out the story that I
- 0:42Speaker 2: wrote on fifth round quarterback Cole Peyton. I spoke to
- 0:46Speaker 2: his position coach from North Dakota State, and he provided
- 0:50Speaker 2: a lot of insight as to Cole Payton the person.
- 0:54Speaker 2: We know what he accomplished at North Dakota State. You
- 0:57Speaker 2: can see the stats and the highlights. But I thought
- 1:01Speaker 2: that the story, my whole, my whole, you know, idea
- 1:07Speaker 2: of the story.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Was to to really, you.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Know, take readers behind the curtain as to who Cole
- 1:12Speaker 2: Payton is as a person and his character, and I think,
- 1:16Speaker 2: I hope I did a good job in doing that. Okay,
- 1:21Speaker 2: some housekeeping news before we get to my offensive breakdown
- 1:25Speaker 2: for the Eagles. The Eagles have extended the contracts of
- 1:30Speaker 2: both assistant general manager John Ferrari and senior Advisor to
- 1:34Speaker 2: the General Manager, chief Security Officer and head of game
- 1:37Speaker 2: day coaching operations, Dom Desandro. Big news for the Eagles
- 1:42Speaker 2: as they keep two mainstays in house for the foreseeable future.
- 1:48Speaker 2: With that, let's take a look at my way too
- 1:51Speaker 2: early Eagles fifty three man roster projection on the offensive side.
- 1:58Speaker 2: At quarterback, Howie Roseman said in his post draft availability
- 2:03Speaker 2: that he would be open to carrying four quarterbacks.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And while that.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Sounds good and well at the time April when he
- 2:11Speaker 2: said it, sometimes training camp and circumstances have a way
- 2:16Speaker 2: of playing out certain scenarios, and I'm looking at possible
- 2:22Speaker 2: injuries in training camps around the NFL that may entice
- 2:27Speaker 2: a team to pursue a backup quarterback on the Eagles
- 2:32Speaker 2: right now, so I have them keeping Jayalen Hurts, Andy Dalton,
- 2:40Speaker 2: Cole Payton. I do not have Tanner McKee on my
- 2:47Speaker 2: initial fifty three here on May fourth, and my thought
- 2:52Speaker 2: process is looking at the roster. It's really hard knowing
- 2:56Speaker 2: how much talent that they have throughout to maybe justify
- 3:00Speaker 2: caring four quarterbacks. That's a luxury that I'm not sure
- 3:03Speaker 2: most teams have. The Eagles probably don't have that luxury.
- 3:06Speaker 2: As I mentioned, they have a lot of talent, and
- 3:08Speaker 2: they may have to go heavier elsewhere, which would make
- 3:12Speaker 2: that a little tougher to envision, at least before training camp. Again,
- 3:16Speaker 2: this is way too early, and there's a lot that
- 3:19Speaker 2: can transpire between now and then, But I just believe
- 3:22Speaker 2: that you might have. All it takes is one team.
- 3:24Speaker 2: You may have a team in the summer they're not
- 3:27Speaker 2: overly enthused with their quarterbacks in camp. Maybe there's an
- 3:30Speaker 2: injury and they get desperate and kind of like what
- 3:34Speaker 2: you saw with the Eagles and Jacoran Bennett when they
- 3:37Speaker 2: acquired him last August. Maybe you see a team that says, okay,
- 3:41Speaker 2: we will give you fair compensation for Tanner McKee, and
- 3:45Speaker 2: fair is relative, but the Eagles value Tanner McKee in
- 3:48Speaker 2: that building, and he might be.
- 3:53Speaker 1: He might just be.
- 3:54Speaker 2: One of the better number two quarterbacks when you look
- 3:56Speaker 2: across the NFL, So he carries a lot of value,
- 4:00Speaker 2: has more value in the Eagles building than he may
- 4:02Speaker 2: have somewhere else, knowing that he has been a good
- 4:05Speaker 2: story of development.
- 4:07Speaker 1: They have an idea of what they have. He can keep.
- 4:11Speaker 2: He can run the offense, and you've seen him have
- 4:13Speaker 2: some bright moments, and the Eagles value the backup quarterback
- 4:17Speaker 2: position perhaps more than any other team. But they also
- 4:20Speaker 2: have Andy Dalton. And Andy Dalton, he's entering his sixteenth season.
- 4:24Speaker 2: He has a lot of experience, and as a number two,
- 4:27Speaker 2: you're still having that veteran presence there who has seen
- 4:31Speaker 2: a lot. He can be sort of a coach on
- 4:33Speaker 2: the sideline, an extra coach on the sideline for a
- 4:36Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts. And then Cole Payton being drafted in the
- 4:39Speaker 2: fifth round, even though he is a bit of a
- 4:41Speaker 2: developmental project. He needs to refine his mechanics and enhance
- 4:46Speaker 2: his pocket presence and things like that. You don't ordinarily
- 4:49Speaker 2: see a fifth round pick get cut loose before he
- 4:53Speaker 2: really has a chance to see what he can become. Now,
- 4:57Speaker 2: Clayton Thorson was a different story, worry, but it was
- 5:00Speaker 2: very evident early on that Clayton Thorson didn't have it.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Cole Payton's a little different. He has a lot of
- 5:05Speaker 2: athleticism and when he was drafted, it was of the understanding,
- 5:09Speaker 2: or at least the widespread perception is that he needs
- 5:12Speaker 2: a little seasoning. But he is a talented player, and
- 5:15Speaker 2: I believe that in a year or so you can
- 5:18Speaker 2: count on him to be a viable backup quarterback. That
- 5:22Speaker 2: being said, if you wave a Cole Payton, knowing how
- 5:28Speaker 2: highly regarded he was throughout the pre draft process, you're
- 5:30Speaker 2: probably not getting him back on your practice squad. So
- 5:33Speaker 2: I have Cole Payton as the third quarterback and Tanner
- 5:36Speaker 2: McKee being moved for this exercise. Running back running back's
- 5:41Speaker 2: kind of simple for me. I went with Saquon Barkley,
- 5:44Speaker 2: Tank Bigsby, and Will Shipley. I do not have Damian
- 5:48Speaker 2: Pierce or Carson Steel. Carson Steele is more in the
- 5:52Speaker 2: mold of a fullback. I'm not even exactly sure if
- 5:55Speaker 2: the Eagles are going to implement a fullback in this offense.
- 5:58Speaker 2: When you look at the backs that Sean Mannion's coming
- 6:02Speaker 2: from in Green Bay, Lafleur didn't use a full back
- 6:06Speaker 2: and McVeigh doesn't traditionally use a fullback.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Or anything to that extent.
- 6:13Speaker 2: So with that, and they didn't resign Ben Van sumer
- 6:16Speaker 2: and so all signs. I mean, it leaves it up
- 6:19Speaker 2: in the era. Let's say, and I thought that Carson
- 6:22Speaker 2: Steele would be on the bubble anyway, I don't have him.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Damian Pierce signed as a free agent, was a bright
- 6:28Speaker 2: young player at one point in time. Then he sort
- 6:31Speaker 2: of tailed off a little bit in terms of production,
- 6:34Speaker 2: was banged up, And I just don't know if you
- 6:38Speaker 2: can justify keeping someone like Damian Pierce, who kind of
- 6:42Speaker 2: has a redundancy in terms of skill set relative to
- 6:45Speaker 2: that of Tank Bigsby in that he can be between
- 6:49Speaker 2: the tackles type of runner. Will Shipley, at least in theory,
- 6:52Speaker 2: gives you a pass catching option.
- 6:54Speaker 1: He can return kick, so can Damien Pierce.
- 6:57Speaker 2: But Will Shipley is a Corps special teamer, and perhaps
- 7:00Speaker 2: in this offense, with this run, with these run designs
- 7:04Speaker 2: that are expected to be implemented, maybe it favors him
- 7:07Speaker 2: a little bit more. Maybe Sean Mannion will value the
- 7:10Speaker 2: receiving aspect of Will Shipley's game that really hasn't been
- 7:13Speaker 2: tapped into since he's been drafted. But it was a
- 7:17Speaker 2: kind of an easy decision for me to go that route.
- 7:19Speaker 2: With the three running backs there wide receiver Davonte Smith,
- 7:25Speaker 2: McKay Lemon, Dontavian Wicks, Hollywood Brown, Darius Cooper and Johnny Wilson.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I do not have Elijah Moore, Ques Watkins, Danny Gray
- 7:39Speaker 2: or Britton Covey. And AJ Brown has been noticeably omitted,
- 7:43Speaker 2: as I expect him to be moved at some point
- 7:46Speaker 2: in June or thereafter. So for the sake of this exercise,
- 7:50Speaker 2: I have them keeping six wide receivers and I'll break
- 7:53Speaker 2: it down for you.
- 7:54Speaker 1: The top two are pretty cut and dried.
- 7:56Speaker 2: With Devonte Smith and McKay lemon, that's a really good tandem.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I believe McKayle Lemon's going to get off to a
- 8:01Speaker 1: fast start.
- 8:02Speaker 2: He has a skill set that to me suggests it's
- 8:05Speaker 2: going to be translatable early.
- 8:07Speaker 1: To the NFL level.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Good route runner, refined skill set, will go up there
- 8:12Speaker 2: and be competitive at the catch point, good after the catch,
- 8:15Speaker 2: strong hands. Dontavian Wicks is a player that the Eagles
- 8:20Speaker 2: traded for. He gives you a bigger body at six
- 8:23Speaker 2: foot one, two hundred and six pounds. He's more of
- 8:25Speaker 2: an underneath type of receiver. He's not a burner, but
- 8:28Speaker 2: he will attack the football he's got to clean up
- 8:30Speaker 2: his drops, but he gives you a different body type
- 8:33Speaker 2: compared to Devonte Smith and mckaye Lemon, and the Eagles
- 8:37Speaker 2: seem to be pretty high on him. He never saw
- 8:39Speaker 2: a high volume of targets in Green Bay. A lot
- 8:42Speaker 2: of that was they spread the football round. He was
- 8:44Speaker 2: the fourth receiver for most of his time there, and
- 8:47Speaker 2: he should be able to hover around the thirty five
- 8:50Speaker 2: reception mark. I would imagine they're going to spread the
- 8:53Speaker 2: ball round as well. Hollywood Brown gives you a vertical
- 8:57Speaker 2: threat in theory. He hasn't really been in that fashion
- 9:01Speaker 2: throughout his career. Just look at his yards per catch,
- 9:04Speaker 2: but he does give you something different in terms of
- 9:07Speaker 2: what he's able to provide.
- 9:08Speaker 1: He can give you some juice.
- 9:10Speaker 2: He can provide those explosive plays that the Eagles so
- 9:13Speaker 2: sorely lacked for last year in the year before. And
- 9:17Speaker 2: he's not going to be a volume guy by all accounts,
- 9:20Speaker 2: but he does give you someone who's been productive in
- 9:23Speaker 2: this league and a different dimension.
- 9:26Speaker 1: That could unlock another facet of the offense.
- 9:29Speaker 2: So Hollywood Brown stays and the final two spots really
- 9:36Speaker 2: and this goes for across the NFL when you're doing
- 9:39Speaker 2: your fifty three, you have to keep this in mind.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Special teams.
- 9:43Speaker 2: If you're going to be active on game day as
- 9:47Speaker 2: a fifth or six wide receiver, you have to have
- 9:50Speaker 2: third phase value because you're not going to see enough
- 9:52Speaker 2: snaps to warrant a roster spot or a game day
- 9:57Speaker 2: spot for that matter, if you can't help on special teams.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Darius Cooper Ken he can also help as a blocker.
- 10:03Speaker 2: He's a tough, physical kid and in a pinch, he
- 10:08Speaker 2: could return kicks. He can help you as a gunner.
- 10:11Speaker 2: He can run down the field on kickoffs. Johnny Wilson,
- 10:14Speaker 2: he played special teams in his rookie season, was hurt
- 10:17Speaker 2: last year the knee ankle injury.
- 10:19Speaker 1: But he gives you.
- 10:20Speaker 2: A big bodied option who's a good blocker and can
- 10:23Speaker 2: also help in the kick return game as a blocker.
- 10:27Speaker 2: He can run down the field on kickoffs and give
- 10:30Speaker 2: you some value there. That's what it comes down to
- 10:33Speaker 2: when you're the fifth or sixth receiver or you're.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Vying for that spot.
- 10:37Speaker 2: It doesn't come down to more often than not, who
- 10:40Speaker 2: the better receiver is. It comes down to how can
- 10:44Speaker 2: they help us on game day? If you're thinking through
- 10:47Speaker 2: the You know, if you're thinking through the thought process
- 10:49Speaker 2: of a coach or a decision maker, if they're active
- 10:52Speaker 2: on game day, how can they help us? And that
- 10:55Speaker 2: factor into my process here. So those are the receivers.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Offensive line Jordan Mylotta, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen,
- 11:06Speaker 2: Lane Johnson. There's your starters. Then I have Fred Johnson,
- 11:11Speaker 2: Drew Kendall, Mark kel Bell, Micah Morris, and Cameron Williams.
- 11:17Speaker 2: So that gives you ten offensive linemen. There, let's break
- 11:20Speaker 2: it down. Fred Johnson one of the better backup tackles
- 11:23Speaker 2: in the league, likely to be the Eagles swing tackle
- 11:27Speaker 2: to start. I think markel Bell, who they drafted in
- 11:30Speaker 2: the third round, is more of a developmental type of
- 11:34Speaker 2: player who will help the team a year down the line, perhaps,
- 11:37Speaker 2: but someone who has a really bright future. He's obviously
- 11:41Speaker 2: going to be on the team. Drew Kendall, there's your
- 11:44Speaker 2: backup center. He might be able to help you at
- 11:47Speaker 2: guard in a pinch if you need him to, but
- 11:49Speaker 2: he's highly thought of in the building.
- 11:51Speaker 1: They drafted him last year.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I mentioned that he was my favorite Day three pick
- 11:55Speaker 2: for the team and one that I believed offered the
- 11:58Speaker 2: highest upside.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I liked him coming out of college.
- 12:00Speaker 2: He'll be your backup center and perhaps give you some
- 12:03Speaker 2: guard versatility, so he'll have a lot of game day value.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Michael Morris, the rookie guard drafted at pick two oh
- 12:11Speaker 2: seven in the sixth round out of Georgia. He sticks,
- 12:15Speaker 2: this is a player coming out at Georgia. He had
- 12:19Speaker 2: some draft buzz. He went a little lower than I expected.
- 12:22Speaker 2: You don't want to part with a player like that
- 12:24Speaker 2: because in all likelihood they don't make it through waivers unscathed,
- 12:28Speaker 2: and all of a sudden, if you're the Eagles, you've
- 12:30Speaker 2: lost your pick that you were hoping to get to
- 12:33Speaker 2: the practice squad and develop. I don't think that that
- 12:36Speaker 2: becomes even a conversation. Again, we're doing this month's out
- 12:40Speaker 2: without having so much as a training camp practice, but
- 12:43Speaker 2: just looking at it through the lens of upside, Michael
- 12:47Speaker 2: Morris stays. Cameron Williams and Miles Hinton are an interesting
- 12:52Speaker 2: They're an interesting pair because they were both drafted on
- 12:56Speaker 2: Day three last year. They both played tackle, and when
- 13:00Speaker 2: Miles Hinton came out, he was the more polished product.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Cameron Williams was raw.
- 13:06Speaker 2: And had he went into the draft this year, he
- 13:09Speaker 2: probably goes a little bit earlier. He has athleticism, He's
- 13:12Speaker 2: got to develop his play strength. But I thought that
- 13:14Speaker 2: when he stepped in in the season finale, I personally
- 13:18Speaker 2: was expecting it to be a little rough and.
- 13:23Speaker 1: I expected some turbulence.
- 13:24Speaker 2: But I thought he acquitted himself fairly well and checked
- 13:27Speaker 2: off some boxes there. He has the greater upside, and
- 13:32Speaker 2: I think that's the reason why I have him on here.
- 13:34Speaker 2: He stays as the final piece on the offensive line,
- 13:37Speaker 2: and Miles Hinton goes.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I also have.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Out Jake Majors, Willie Lampkin, Willie Lampkin, who I believe
- 13:46Speaker 2: is going to be a training camp star.
- 13:50Speaker 1: He's out, and.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Jaden Roberts the undrafted free agent offensive lineman. And we'll see,
- 14:00Speaker 2: We'll see where else it goes. We'll see how the
- 14:04Speaker 2: offensive lines sort of shakes up. Maybe they add a
- 14:06Speaker 2: veteran guard. They had Michael Jordan, who's seventh year pro
- 14:11Speaker 2: out of Ohio State that was there for tryouts.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Maybe and they do need a.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Veteran guard, but maybe he or somebody of that ILK
- 14:21Speaker 2: is signed for training camp and all of a sudden,
- 14:24Speaker 2: it has a different complexion that offensive line, it has
- 14:27Speaker 2: a different look to it, and so yeah, out I
- 14:32Speaker 2: have Miles Hinton, Willie Lampkin, Jake Majors, Jaden Roberts, and
- 14:38Speaker 2: John Ojuku who you may forget, but the Eagles signed
- 14:41Speaker 2: him a little bit.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Fairly early in the in the off season, but he
- 14:48Speaker 1: has some experience tight end.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I gave this some thoughts, and I have the Eagles
- 14:56Speaker 2: going with Dallas Goddard, Eli Stours, the rookie.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Cameron lat two and de Kwon Wright, the.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Undrafted free agent tight end out of Ole Miss. I
- 15:11Speaker 2: have Johnny Munt, who the Eagles signed in free agency,
- 15:14Speaker 2: and he's gotten a lot of hype with regard to
- 15:16Speaker 2: his blocking, though he's not a player that I expect
- 15:19Speaker 2: to be in high demand, and for those reasons, I
- 15:21Speaker 2: think you can get him on the practice squad, elevate
- 15:24Speaker 2: him for a few weeks as needed, and then make
- 15:27Speaker 2: a decision on what you want to do. He's an
- 15:29Speaker 2: older player, like I mentioned, he's a blocking specialist, doesn't
- 15:34Speaker 2: have a lot of receiving upside, and players like that,
- 15:37Speaker 2: I think you can feel sort of comfortable parting with
- 15:40Speaker 2: them and then getting them back on your practice squad.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Whereas someone like a Cameron latu Is a few years
- 15:48Speaker 2: removed from being a third round pick.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 15:55Speaker 3: long lines, We've all been there, But when it comes
- 15:58Speaker 3: to your cannabis, Camden a Pothecary makes it easy. This
- 16:02Speaker 3: is the dispensary for sports fans, just minutes outside of Philly,
- 16:06Speaker 3: with plenty of free parking.
- 16:08Speaker 4: You'll be in and out.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Fast, no hassle, no waiting, and they don't just care
- 16:12Speaker 3: about convenience.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Cam Den Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their
- 16:17Speaker 4: staff makes sure you feel taken care of every time

- 16:40Speaker 4: service members, and healthcare pros. Camed din Apothecary top quality cannabis,
- 16:46Speaker 4: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Twenty one on penn Up.
- 16:50Speaker 2: He did some good things last season in the blocking game.
- 16:54Speaker 2: He also is a standout special teams performer when you're
- 16:59Speaker 2: looking at the final spots on the roster, kind of
- 17:02Speaker 2: like I mentioned, with wide receiver depth that comes into play.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Who can help Michael Clay and provide third phase contributions
- 17:10Speaker 2: and Cameron Latsu prove that he can do that. And
- 17:13Speaker 2: he does help you as a blocker as a tight end,
- 17:16Speaker 2: so it's not like he's deficient in that area. You
- 17:20Speaker 2: still have a blocking tight end on the fifty three.
- 17:23Speaker 2: It's just not Johnny Muntz at least in this scenario.
- 17:26Speaker 2: And then rounding out the group is Daykwon Wright, who
- 17:29Speaker 2: may surprise some as he's an undrafted free agent out
- 17:33Speaker 2: of Ole Miss, but I had a draftable grade on him.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I had a six round grade to be exact on
- 17:39Speaker 2: day Kwon Wright. He can catch the football. He was
- 17:43Speaker 2: an explosive player in that offense last season. He has
- 17:47Speaker 2: a little bit of a blocking upside, not that he's
- 17:50Speaker 2: super proficient in it, but I saw enough in his
- 17:54Speaker 2: time at Cowags that suggests to me that he can
- 17:56Speaker 2: be competent in that area.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And he's younger.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Sure, if he has a good training camp, in a
- 18:03Speaker 2: good preseason and puts that on tape, it could be
- 18:06Speaker 2: hard to get him through waivers, knowing that he was
- 18:09Speaker 2: someone who had some appeal as at late day three
- 18:14Speaker 2: selection and I was actually surprised that he didn't get drafted.
- 18:18Speaker 2: All that and taking all that into consideration, I think
- 18:21Speaker 2: you keep the player that you're worried about losing, and
- 18:23Speaker 2: then you try to get someone like a Johnny Munt
- 18:25Speaker 2: on the practice squad and figure out how you want
- 18:28Speaker 2: to maneuver things from.
- 18:30Speaker 1: There on out.
- 18:32Speaker 2: But that's the offensive side of the ball. Where will
- 18:34Speaker 2: I go on defense? Well, I have some interesting decisions
- 18:37Speaker 2: on that side of the ball to make, and I'll
- 18:39Speaker 2: have that podcast for you tomorrow, so keep an eye
- 18:41Speaker 2: out for that, keep an eye out for my story
- 18:44Speaker 2: on Eli Stours.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I spoke to his position coach.
- 18:47Speaker 2: From Vanderbilt, and I look forward to bringing that to
- 18:50Speaker 2: you on Inside the Birds dot com and then of
- 18:53Speaker 2: course to fifty three and its entirety.
