Andreas Utz: You are running a successful private practice
0:03
in beautiful Palm de Mallorca
0:05
George Raeber: and you give it back to the audience, which is quite amazing.
0:07
So was this from the get go like this?
0:10
Laurence Adrieans: No, I think I learned a lot and you all will agree
0:14
that by doing it you can get better.
0:16
I'm not so much a creative person, but if there's something coming up, then
0:20
I will be the one who's gonna lead that and we will get the work done.
0:39
Andreas Utz: Welcome to Straumann ProTalk.
0:41
Welcome to the Pulse of Dentistry.
0:43
Welcome to the ideas.
0:44
We are recording this episode directly from the ideas and today.
0:49
I have the pleasure with George, my co-host to welcome Dr. Laurence Adriaens
0:54
from beautiful Palma de Mayorca.
0:56
Thank you.
0:57
Welcome Laurence.
0:58
Welcome George.
0:59
Laurence Adrieans: welcome.
0:59
You too as well.
1:01
Andreas Utz: So I said we are recording this from directly the ideas and I
1:05
can tell you the excitement level here at the I Ds is super high.
1:10
And we are super pleased to have you today, Laurence.
1:14
You are running a successful private practice in beautiful Palm de Mayorca.
1:19
You are a periodontist and an implantologist by training.
1:23
And that's also the focus of your work that, that you do.
1:26
And you are very active also in, in speaking you are very
1:31
active also in communities in the ITI in the WIN community.
1:35
We come to this later, so you're a very active person, but.
1:38
Introduce yourself in one minute.
1:40
Who is Laurence audience to the audience?
1:43
Laurence Adrieans: Okay.
1:43
Thank you for the question and the nice introduction already that you gave.
1:47
If I talk about myself, I think I would like to stress the fact that I'm a very
1:51
active person as you're already stressed.
1:53
For me, activity is something that gives me also a good energy.
1:58
So sitting in the sofa as already Ronald also said in his episode is not something
2:03
that you will see me do very often.
2:06
And I am a doer.
2:07
I'm not so much a creative person, but if there is something coming up as a
2:11
creation and we know how it will go down, then I will be the one who's gonna
2:14
lead that and we will get the work done.
2:17
So this is very interesting, not only in my professional life,
2:21
but also in my personal life.
2:23
And another thing that I would like to also share with you is that I like to be
2:27
taking care of people, taking care in my own way of people around me and my, again.
2:32
Personal life, professional life, because I think when we talk about
2:36
patients who really likes to come to your practice, they don't feel
2:40
like very comfortable very often.
2:42
It's sometimes painful.
2:44
So I like to create this bond with my patient and to empathize.
2:48
I think that's very interesting and very necessary and more today that.
2:54
Sometimes our communities we're all closed up in our phones or closed up in
2:58
our iPads and our computers so that we still have this human contact with them.
3:03
We are placing and doing treatments or placing implants, doing treatments,
3:08
very complex treatments sometimes, but we are treating patients.
3:12
It's human beings that we're talking about.
3:14
So I think that this is also something that is very
3:17
important that we do every day.
3:19
And I am also a mom of two beautiful boys.
3:23
Theo and Ugo, they're almost nine and 11.
3:26
So they also give me a lot of joy and something that is also very
3:31
nice that I have as an talent is that I speak many languages.
3:35
So also in Palma we have an international community, so we
3:38
can get to a lot of patience.
3:41
Andreas Utz: Okay.
3:41
I can sense a lot of passion for, the field of dentistry for the community
3:46
also, but also for contributing.
3:49
So I think in the course of this podcast, it'll be a lot about
3:52
leadership, about achieving, it will be about mentorship, and we will speak
3:56
also about the future of dentistry.
3:58
So looking forward to this.
4:00
One thing that you did not mention in when introducing yourself is you also
4:05
learned from some really great mentors from some of the greatest, I would
4:08
say, as an example from Nicola and.
4:10
In burn, you spend quite some time with him.
4:12
So what is it that you learn from.
4:15
Him and maybe from other great mentors.
4:18
And what was the influence from these mentors to you
4:21
as a person and your career?
4:23
Okay.
4:24
Laurence Adrieans: I think the very first mentor and the very first example that
4:27
I would like to address here with this question is also the influence of my dad.
4:31
I'm a fourth generation dentist, so it comes along the genes almost, you think?
4:37
Yes.
4:38
And my dad has been.
4:39
Somebody who also helped me out.
4:41
He never pushed me to get into the field, but he helped me out and he
4:44
said, look, if you wanna do this, then just do it because you wanna do it,
4:47
not because I am already somebody in that field, but you like to have this
4:52
kind of passion that you feel about it.
4:54
And then also share it with the people around you.
4:58
And obviously Klaus for me, it's a very important person during the
5:02
master that I've been doing and burn.
5:05
He is a very generous person, a very generous person in the way that he likes
5:11
to create a family feeling in his team.
5:14
And again, also stressing the importance of being a team.
5:18
A team is respecting.
5:20
The other ones is growing with the other ones, and it's
5:22
learning from the other ones.
5:24
He didn't only do that on a professional level with us in the university, but he
5:28
took us also outside of the university to get this team building going on
5:33
in activities outdoors weekend long.
5:36
So it was really nice to feel that.
5:39
When you get into a new area, because it's burn.
5:42
I'm from Belgium originally.
5:43
I moved to a new place as so many other ones that were in that master just as me.
5:49
We left home, we left friends, we left family behind, but then
5:53
he creates this kind of family feeling so that you feel good and
5:56
this is then much easier to go on.
6:00
Yes.
6:01
Andreas Utz: So you said you, you were born and raised in beautiful Belgium.
6:05
You ended up now in beautiful Palma.
6:09
If you look back in your career, what was the most magic or defining moment
6:14
in your career that changed everything?
6:17
Laurence Adrieans: I think I have to go back there.
6:19
When I finished dental school.
6:21
And go back a little bit again to my dad, to my father.
6:25
He gave me the opportunity because at the time when I finished dental
6:28
school, I was not really sure I wanted to get into Periodontology.
6:31
So he gave me the opportunity for two months to leave the country to
6:35
go to New York and spend some time in New York and private practices
6:39
of friends, of his colleagues of his, and also had the opportunity to
6:43
visit three different universities.
6:47
So with this kind of context and this kind of.
6:51
Experience that I got there.
6:53
I then came back home and I told him, look, I really want to get into
6:57
a master of periodontology now to get into a master of periodontology.
7:01
It's not just knock and I wanna start.
7:03
You just have to go through a certain pathway.
7:06
They ask you also professional experience.
7:08
So I worked for one year in between two practices, the practice
7:12
of my dad and one in Holland.
7:13
And then I left off and I had this amazing experience with Sandra
7:17
Cortini for one year in Florence.
7:19
He is a very nice person, a very dedicated person, inspired me a lot and these two
7:26
years with different experiences gave me then the possibility to get into the
7:30
program that Klaus Slung at the time was directing at the University of Bern.
7:34
And then my journey starts.
7:37
Andreas Utz: So it's a really broad and deep education, learning from
7:40
a lot of great people in the field and all starting with your dad.
7:45
That's a great story.
7:47
So you said, you have, you're running a practice, you are active as a speaker,
7:51
you are passionate about the community.
7:52
You have two boys, you have a husband, you're very busy.
7:56
How do you manage your energy?
7:57
Where do you get your energy from?
7:59
Laurence Adrieans: I think it's something innate.
8:01
It's who I am.
8:03
But I am also very positive person, so I think the energy.
8:07
That I find around me in positive experiences and
8:10
positive connections with people.
8:12
Could be people that I've known for a long time, friends for a lifetime.
8:16
New friends could be also new colleagues in the field.
8:19
And I think this gives me this kind of energy that pushes me up.
8:22
And also my patients.
8:24
My patients who are.
8:26
So happy and show their gratitudes when, for example, their periodontal
8:31
status has completely changed.
8:33
And they really tell me, look, this, I did not know that this could happen.
8:37
So this shift and this wellbeing that you can give to your patients,
8:42
that gives me also a lot of energy.
8:44
I.
8:45
Andreas Utz: I can relate to this.
8:46
I think it's a beautiful purpose that, this profession has, to doing good for
8:50
patients and to really change the life of patients and to exactly improve
8:54
the quality of life for your patients.
8:56
That's really beautiful.
8:58
A new thing that we wanna do is we have a question.
9:00
We got a question from our followers on Instagram.
9:03
And it's actually, I think someone that, it's Dr. Kra and she asked
9:07
the question, I have to read it.
9:09
How is it to be a lecturer, woman on the field of implant dentistry?
9:14
Can you share an anecdote?
9:15
And I think she's probably referring to the fact that it's a quite male dominated
9:20
world, especially if it comes to speakers.
9:21
So it's very refreshing to have you on stage.
9:24
Yeah.
9:24
How is this,
9:25
Laurence Adrieans: so the experiences of speaking in front of a public, and
9:30
especially in this male dominating field, which is implantology,
9:35
which is related to surgery.
9:37
It can be very intimidating, but I think you have your story to tell and
9:44
you have your experiences to share.
9:46
So don't think too much about what's going on around you.
9:50
Just go for what you want to show and.
9:54
It's very nice to be up there and to be a kind of example for other women to
10:00
be a kind of role model that we still not have enough to maybe insight these
10:05
ladies because there's plenty of female dentists studying dentists that will
10:10
become then graduating dentists, licensed dentists who can then start to search
10:16
for a new pathway, go into a kind of specialty, and I would love them to choose
10:21
this implantology direction because.
10:24
We can do this, we can.
10:28
If you really believe in yourself, you can do this.
10:31
And it's very nice because I think we have a community and we will talk
10:35
about this community that is growing and that can give support to women who
10:39
want to get more and more involved.
10:41
So it's demanding.
10:43
Yes.
10:44
Because you have to be a kind of example, but you have to be a reachable example.
10:49
I know maybe not everybody.
10:51
Has the same energy and has the same motivation and the same passion, but I
10:56
think they can pick up something from who you are and then maybe work further with
11:01
that and then get into the next level.
11:05
Andreas Utz: It's a really great question.
11:06
I love this question because and you said it, I agree.
11:09
You are a great MO role model for female speakers in implant industry,
11:13
and I would like the community to learn a little bit from you.
11:15
So how did you start?
11:17
What was your first step?
11:20
Laurence Adrieans: The very first step was during my master still.
11:23
And then you do some presentations in front of the students that
11:26
you're studying together with.
11:28
But then we had to go to the 2005 in Madrid.
11:32
I was doing a research project and our professor told us, look, the ones who
11:36
are in this, their research product, they should give some explanation in
11:39
front of all the other EFP program introduced students this was the first
11:45
time that I had a public in front of me that I did not really know.
11:49
That was not familiar.
11:51
And then from there, it's true that in 2008 I moved to Palma.
11:55
We started a private practice and then I got involved little by little.
11:59
Also, for example, next talk I did was in a oped 2009 in front of
12:04
the dental hygienist Community was a very nice experience as well.
12:08
Big audience, very impressive.
12:11
But it worked out fine.
12:12
Little by little also in the national community from Spain.
12:16
I got introduced because I'm not from Spain originally, but they
12:19
really supported me and the first one who supported me was Fernando.
12:23
He got the contacts he got already in sepa, for example.
12:27
He got contacts already in the Straumann area as well of Spain.
12:31
So little by little he introduced me there.
12:34
And I could also be part of that community.
12:36
And then it was a very nice moment.
12:38
Also in 2009 we did with, together with Stroman and Klaus Lung in
12:42
Palma, a first kind of symposium.
12:46
And there I spoke for the first time also in my new native language or my new, yeah.
12:52
I dunno.
12:53
Adopted with adopted language.
12:54
Yes, exactly.
12:55
And I was Spanish and that was really a challenge for me.
12:58
George Raeber: Wow.
12:58
I can imagine.
12:58
Yeah.
12:59
We spoke about, what gives you energy and seeing you on stage.
13:02
I think it's fair to say that this is also something that gives you energy actually.
13:05
And you give it back to the audience, which is quite amazing.
13:08
So was this from the get go like this, or did you actually grow
13:12
into, being very present on stage and be comfortable on stage?
13:17
Laurence Adrieans: No, I think I learned a lot, and you all will agree
13:20
that by doing it, you can get better.
13:23
Okay.
13:24
And also this community that we will then talk a little bit more about.
13:28
They offered me possibilities to.
13:31
Do some workshops around how to present in public.
13:35
So you take little tips with you along the road that you get from people around you.
13:39
Others also presenting.
13:42
You get some ideas and then you start to make your own kind of product.
13:45
And that's how it works for me.
13:47
George Raeber: And I think that's also an important message.
13:48
So this is something that can be learned to a certain extent.
13:51
I think it needs a basic level of confidence, but then
13:54
also, the tips and tricks.
13:55
They can make a difference.
13:56
So
13:56
Laurence Adrieans: Yes they can.
13:57
And it's very small things.
13:59
It's maybe knowing that you can move your, with the hands, that you can contact
14:03
with the people, that you have this eye contact, that you can smile, that you
14:08
can make a joke, that you can just be who you are and give at a personal touch.
14:15
Andreas Utz: The first time I saw you on stage was at young Professional,
14:18
European Young Professional Symposium.
14:20
I still remember in Amsterdam.
14:21
I think that was 2017.
14:23
And by that time I thought you've been a quite complete speaker already,
14:27
so I think it's about what you said.
14:29
It's about getting started and have the courage to, to do
14:32
so and to find your own way.
14:33
So I hope that's very inspiring for the people listening to this podcast.
14:38
Another thing that I see you're doing is you are very active on social
14:41
media, so you try to extend your reach with your social media profile.
14:45
How do you look at this channel?
14:46
What is your recommendation to the young opinion leaders out there?
14:49
Laurence Adrieans: I'm happy that you asked this question because
14:52
I am a person who got really late into those kind of channels.
14:56
I was not at all into Facebook.
14:58
I was not at all into Instagram until 2018, the end of 2018.
15:02
And the reason that I got into those channels was due to win the
15:08
women in Planetology network because I understood that if I wanted
15:11
to reach kind of community that was out there at a global level.
15:15
Then I needed to be visible and I needed to be somebody that they could relate
15:20
to and that they could follow or see how I was working and how I was doing
15:24
things so that they also could learn.
15:27
So this was, for me, the bigger step, but I think it's a good tool to use,
15:33
but it's not the only tool to use.
15:36
Okay.
15:37
And being part of the ITI, which is a really amazing community.
15:42
I think young people should also invest in a community that can
15:45
support them, not only at the level of education, but also with an amazing
15:50
network and amazing professionals.
15:52
So combining those two, I think this can get you as an opinion leader very far.
16:02
Andreas Utz: Do you think a young opinion leader could work
16:04
without a social media account?
16:08
Laurence Adrieans: I think not so much anymore.
16:10
Nowadays, I think it's really necessary.
16:12
We need to reach and the reachability that we get with this kind of media is amazing.
16:20
Andreas Utz: In your last answer, you mentioned in, in the beginning, you
16:22
mentioned a woman in Implantology Network.
16:25
You've been a founding member.
16:27
Of this, and you are still very active there.
16:29
You are leading the Spanish group as an example, and you're mentoring
16:34
a lot of females in this network.
16:36
What is, tell us more, what is the network about and how do young female
16:40
clinicAdriaenss benefit from it?
16:42
Laurence Adrieans: Women in Implantology network, it all started in 2016 in Zurich.
16:46
We were invited different women from international backgrounds, also from
16:50
different continents to start to.
16:54
Get together and grow, kind of network, a network where we could support
16:59
women and to get those women also much more in the spotlight, get more
17:05
visibility, and to create a kind of role model in different countries.
17:12
So then I became this kind of role model in Spain and we started to look
17:19
for women who could be interested.
17:21
Who could feel that they could be supported by this network
17:25
and grow with this network.
17:27
So now we have I think 10 to 15 ambassadors in the Wind Spain community.
17:34
And we are very active again using social media.
17:39
And on the other hand side.
17:40
Now, recently we introduced a kind of wind circle community.
17:44
The wind circle community is to attract on a local.
17:48
Base, the women that are in the area.
17:50
For example, I have colleagues who are in Madrid.
17:52
I have colleagues who are in Bilbao.
17:53
I have colleagues in the south of Spain that in those local areas,
17:58
women who would be interested to get together to get to know more
18:02
about implants, to get to know more.
18:04
More about how we can maybe present a case, how we document a case
18:09
and so on, that they can have the small community to fall back onto.
18:13
And to feel comfortable moving in that circle because I think a lot of us as
18:18
women, and I am the first one when I was sitting there in that first meeting in
18:24
2016 in Zurich thinking, how is it that I have this feeling that I cannot do this?
18:31
Why do I feel this feeling that I am not capable of some things?
18:37
I think we.
18:38
It's put sometimes too much stress on ourselves and we
18:42
underestimate what we are able of.
18:45
It's true that we like to have support and I am the first one who
18:49
likes to have support around me.
18:51
I had it in the beginning from my father and I got it from my
18:54
mentors and now I have it also with my partner, Fernando Frank.
18:58
In the in, in our clinic.
18:59
Both of us.
19:00
It's nice to have the support and you can.
19:04
Get that there from, I also get my energy.
19:06
Yeah.
19:07
And you grow together, huh?
19:08
Yes.
19:08
And you grow together?
19:09
Andreas Utz: Yes.
19:09
So to close this section, what is your message to young female talented
19:15
clinicAdriaenss that would like to lecture, share, and to be on stage?
19:19
Okay.
19:21
Laurence Adrieans: I think the most important thing is just go for it.
19:25
Try it.
19:26
If in the end it's nothing that you feel like.
19:30
It makes you happy, then let it be.
19:32
But if you don't try it, you will never know.
19:36
And this WIN community is there to support you, is there to help you.
19:40
If you need maybe some more experience how to present into
19:43
pub in a public or in front of a public, then you can talk to us.
19:47
Do you need to know more about how constructing a keynote
19:51
or a PowerPoint presentation?
19:52
You can fall back on us.
19:53
You can contact us.
19:55
We are there.
19:55
We are physically there.
19:57
And we give an answer back, even though if you're on the other side of the planet,
20:01
we have a global community as well.
20:03
So this is the nice thing about it.
20:05
But just try.
20:06
Don't be scared.
20:08
I would say if you don't try, you will never know.
20:11
Yeah.
20:11
Andreas Utz: No, I like that.
20:13
Maybe for the ones that are not knowing the wind network, and I think
20:16
you can be very proud of this laws.
20:18
Thank you.
20:18
The Wind Network became a movement of thousands of females in implant industry.
20:23
And we are very happy to see.
20:25
Evolving a lot of young talents in this network.
20:28
So a very exciting network to join.
20:30
Laurence Adrieans: Yes.
20:31
Yes.
20:31
Because I think there are a lot of, like we tell them, you're hidden gems.
20:36
You are working every day.
20:38
You're producing really nice things, but then we need to get it out there
20:42
and we need to get it in front of the public that you can share your
20:45
experiences, that they can learn from you.
20:49
But the thing, and the nice thing of being on stage as well that I like
20:52
is that I learn so much from them.
20:55
So this is
20:56
George Raeber: you get back a win-win.
20:57
Laurence Adrieans: Yeah.
20:57
George Raeber: The
20:58
Laurence Adrieans: win-win situation.
20:59
Win-win.
21:00
George Raeber: Great.
21:01
So beyond win let's go to another topic that I think is a big passion of yours.
21:05
It's implantology.
21:06
Yeah.
21:07
And particularly, we're here at ideas and at ideas.
21:09
There's always the news about technological advancements.
21:12
Maybe let's talk a bit about your.
21:15
Adoption of digital technology for your workflows.
21:18
Can you share a bit, what was your journey and how did you start?
21:23
And maybe also in hindsight, what would you have done differently if
21:26
you had to start all over again?
21:28
Laurence Adrieans: Okay.
21:29
So I think here I have to give a lot of credit to Fernando.
21:34
Fernando is a creative person is somebody who comes up with ideas, who looks around,
21:40
who sees things, who captures things.
21:44
He goes through a time of pros and contrasts and why would I do it?
21:48
Why would I not do it?
21:50
And then there is a decision made.
21:52
So he then decides, he obviously talks to me.
21:56
We, both of us are A team, but the idea very often comes from him.
22:01
So then it comes into the practice, and that's the digital journey
22:05
for us started five years ago, and we did it in a gradual way.
22:09
So what happened is that.
22:11
From a specialist practice, Periodontology.
22:13
Implantology, we had to make a turnover and go much more into a multidisciplinary
22:18
treatment kind of practice.
22:20
Concept.
22:21
So we started to treat also our patients using orthodontics, working
22:26
with orthodontists in our own practice.
22:29
And especially when we saw that the aligners were coming into play, also
22:34
the obtaining the information and.
22:39
The registers of the patients was much more comfortable with an intraoral
22:43
scanner, so it was cleaner, it was faster, it was more comfortable.
22:50
So we took that in the practice.
22:51
They started to work with us, or the orthodontists started to work
22:55
in the first place with that tool.
22:57
And then we started to see things that we liked about this new tool.
23:01
It's a very visual tool.
23:03
You can show the patient.
23:04
It's as if the patient is sitting on his own tongue and they can look
23:08
inside, outside on top of their teeth.
23:11
If you show it in the models that you make, they understand what's going
23:13
George Raeber: to happen With them.
23:13
Laurence Adrieans: Exactly.
23:14
They are feeling much more part of their treatments.
23:17
Exactly.
23:18
So the next thing is that Fernando sees, okay, now maybe also those
23:23
traditional walk subs that we're doing, we can maybe use some digital planning.
23:28
Then also.
23:29
Use some softwares, introduce there also the tools that we have to design
23:36
and then do those chairside treatments with, for example, mild reconstructions.
23:41
So there we'd get another move going on.
23:44
And then obviously lately, I think a very big move has been in the last two years
23:50
is that we've been seeing that there is software out there that can give.
23:55
An even more visual way of the end result of a treatment.
23:59
And then I'm talking obviously about Smile Cloud.
24:01
Smile Cloud is amazing.
24:03
It's amazing to show what we can get from a final result.
24:10
And on the other hand side, it's an amazing platform because you can put
24:13
all the information together and you can communicate with the different
24:16
specialists, the different professionals.
24:18
Even the patients can get onto that platform and see what's going on, if
24:22
he really wants to be part of this.
24:25
Planning software.
24:27
Obviously co diagnostics is something that we cannot live anymore without.
24:31
So the last five years, gradually we've been moving and we've introduced all those
24:37
tools, and I think we now almost can say that we are fully digital in the practice.
24:44
Andreas Utz: What is the next step you envision now that you
24:46
said the last five years evolved?
24:48
What is the natural next step for you?
24:50
Laurence Adrieans: That's a funny question that you ask and, I talked a
24:53
little bit about that with Fernando as well, so we were there like, yeah, what
24:57
would be the, what is it all about?
24:59
This robotics and the Falcon and, but then again, you have to understand that
25:05
we at some point also still rely on the fact that freehand is also okay.
25:11
So now the combination what we've learned in the past with
25:14
the new technologies involved.
25:16
I think what we really want to do in the next couple of years is to improve
25:20
and optimize our workflows that we have nowadays, that we still can refine and
25:25
that we even can get better outcomes and even better treatment results.
25:30
And then I talk, and I really like to talk it in that way that over
25:33
time will last because for us, long time, long term, long time matters.
25:37
It matters a lot to us.
25:39
Okay.
25:40
George Raeber: Now, what would you advise to a practice that is just
25:43
about to start their transformation?
25:45
Okay.
25:46
What's a good entry point that they could, get easy into and Okay.
25:50
Not be overwhelmed with all the possibilities.
25:52
Laurence Adrieans: Yes.
25:53
I think there are basically two things that you cannot start anymore to use.
25:59
As a new private practice owner, you have to obviously have CBCT.
26:05
Scan because you find so much more relevant information, you can avoid
26:11
so many things that you might not have seen on the traditional 2D kind of
26:15
radiographs that we had before, and in combination with an intraoral scanner.
26:20
I think these two tools, if you want to start to get into the digitalization for
26:25
your own practice, are the most important ones to start off with because then.
26:30
If you do have this idea of going a step further, for example, into guided
26:35
surgery, then you have this really nice concept, the smile in the box concept.
26:39
With these two tools, you can get one step further.
26:43
It's the entry door, basically.
26:43
Yes.
26:43
And you don't necessarily have to from the start, also invest in the softwares
26:49
that go along with the planning, the designing, and the executing of those
26:53
surgical treatments that are guided.
26:55
Yeah,
26:56
George Raeber: We talked before about, your experience, how important the team
27:00
is that with Klau long, you also, learned how important it's to, to get along with
27:05
each other and to build on each other.
27:07
Now with digital transformation, it also has a lot to do with the team work.
27:11
So how do you manage that?
27:12
You bring your team along and that it's not just about you being at
27:16
the forerunner, basically, but you also depend on the whole.
27:20
Practice to transform.
27:21
How do you do this?
27:22
Laurence Adrieans: Yes.
27:23
I think we are very darn down to earth.
27:25
We're very down to earth in our practice.
27:27
And when we introduce something new, we are learning just as much
27:32
as we are asking them to learn.
27:34
We introduced the team from the start.
27:37
It's not that we are going to do all the details and get all
27:40
the little things figured out.
27:42
We will figure it out together.
27:43
And I think that makes that, the team sees that, oh, you make this failure.
27:47
Oh, because I made the same failure, but we, from our failures,
27:50
we then get again into an a positive kind of flow that we can.
27:57
Build on top of each other.
27:59
So I think even though some of our team players are maybe a little bit like,
28:03
Ooh, scared that we have something new and you have now we have to learn again
28:06
a new protocol, and we have already so many things going on in the practice.
28:10
I think as we do it all together, it doesn't feel that difficult.
28:15
And there is a kind of learning curve.
28:18
I'm not gonna say that there is not, and you lose time and you are then
28:21
suddenly late for a next patient.
28:22
But it's worth it.
28:23
Yeah.
28:24
And we explain it as well to them that they're part of this.
28:27
And then the very nice thing is that we see also that they are
28:30
eager to then learn even more.
28:33
Or that they say, you know what?
28:35
I wanna get a little bit more involved in the digital printing.
28:38
So I'll take that for me.
28:39
I will investigate a little bit and then if I need some help bring
28:42
it back to the team to discuss it.
28:44
Exactly.
28:44
That's great.
28:45
Yeah.
28:45
So this is really nice
28:46
George Raeber: now.
28:47
This technology is not there for technology's sake, so it's supposed
28:51
to actually solve problems.
28:53
And, going back or looking a bit into the future, what do you think is one
28:57
of the most underestimated challenges still to be solved in Implantology?
29:01
And how could technology actually help to do this?
29:04
Laurence Adrieans: So for me if I think when I'm thinking of my own practice, the
29:08
challenges that we meet on almost daily basis are sometimes complications that.
29:15
Are happening.
29:16
Could be around implants, could be also around teeth.
29:19
We have boat constructions in the mouth.
29:23
And what I really would like to join, or that people would join me
29:28
in this kind of thinking is that over time what we would like to do
29:32
is to reduce these complications.
29:35
So when you get into implant dentistry, I would ask people
29:40
to do it in a responsible way.
29:42
To get a proper training, to get proper support from people
29:48
around them that have experience.
29:50
You don't need to always try it out yourself.
29:53
We have other people who have done that for us.
29:55
So you can maybe skip those steps in the learning process and go
30:00
a little bit faster, but then more in a direct way to then.
30:05
Avoids overtime problems.
30:07
And I would say it in that way that I think with all the digital tools that
30:10
we have out there now and explicitly the fact that there is such a nice
30:16
way to plan everything, I know that in the end, okay, we can have a plan
30:21
and you can go through all the steps before you sit down and do the surgery.
30:25
Then the day of the surgery comes, you have all the tools that you need.
30:29
There's still sometimes, but it's still different unaffected
30:32
things that can happen.
30:34
And you need to have the basic backgrounds and the biological
30:38
concepts in your mind as well.
30:39
So I think basic concepts are still very important to then solve this.
30:44
But I think we already have less possibility to encounter very
30:50
complicated situations that we have not beforehand, maybe thought of.
30:54
So due to those tools.
30:57
We will be able to reduce a lot more situations that now we sometimes see that
31:01
the implant has been placed completely in a way that it should not be there.
31:05
That then you have to think, okay, what do I do?
31:08
Do I take the implant out?
31:09
What are the risks of daily implant out?
31:10
Especially if I am near and vital other anatomic structures, if I
31:15
leave the implant, what is the pro and contra to leave the implant?
31:18
It's a lot of things that I think we can just, if we step back with all these new
31:23
tools and go through a nice planning and take the time and support ourselves and
31:28
surround ourselves also with people who know how these things work, I think we
31:31
can do a much better job even now, from now on up to 10 years down the road.
31:37
George Raeber: Excellent.
31:37
That makes a lot of sense.
31:39
Planning for the future and helping to avoid exactly.
31:41
Complications, I think.
31:42
The digital mistake can really have a big positive impact.
31:45
Now to close that part of the session maybe looking 10 years into the future,
31:50
how do you envision Dental Implantology to be done in 10 years from now?
31:55
What are the biggest changes and what are you looking forward to?
31:59
Laurence Adrieans: I think at some point the latest changes for me that have been
32:03
very important is the fact that, for example, there is this one connection,
32:09
one kind of instrument that can be used for different kind of designs of
32:14
implants that will make it much easier for us to work to have it all much
32:18
more protocolized and not to have this.
32:23
Big portfolio that is sometimes a little bit complex.
32:26
And I can tell you that when I started off with the implants that were mostly
32:29
the tissue level implants, then to go on to the bone level implants.
32:33
And then now, you talked about, or you talked about it with Daniel Buser,
32:37
he talks about the hybrid implant.
32:39
So there's a lot of things going on.
32:41
Okay.
32:41
And there's a lot of things that have been changing and we needed to adapt.
32:45
And happily enough, I think people, and we as a human kind, we are.
32:50
Able to adapt and we have to adapt if we want to evolve.
32:54
So maybe some structures around our implants will, I don't know if it's
33:02
possible, but at the surface, for example, that we can again, avoid
33:07
complications over time, such as infections around these kind of
33:12
structures that then are very difficult to cleanse and maybe to keep in them out.
33:18
It is true that we, in our practice, we are pretty drastic about if an implant
33:25
gets infected, we prefer to take the implant out and start over again.
33:29
You cannot do that with a tooth.
33:31
You take out a tooth, you cannot put the tooth in again, can you, an implant
33:34
that has been infected, you can take out the implant, wait for the human
33:38
body to recuperate and almost, and
33:41
George Raeber: restart a treatment,
33:41
Laurence Adrieans: start the treatment again from zero.
33:43
So I think it's also very important that.
33:46
People understand that is possible.
33:49
We can do procedures to regenerate maybe around it, but I still
33:53
don't see exactly how it works.
33:58
It's true that now there's a new instrument coming and I'm very
34:01
eager and I, at the end of the week, I will be for the first time in
34:04
contact with it as the galvas search.
34:06
So let's see if this is really something that can give us some hope because it's
34:11
a preoccupation and I would like to.
34:14
And the development of implants, maybe over time to even be
34:17
able to tackle that part.
34:19
George Raeber: So you would really like to solve the challenge of implant
34:22
complications in different ways.
34:23
So you already did first steps with better planning, but now it's
34:26
also about, probably you get a lot of complicated cases referred.
34:29
And you're confronted with, okay, how do I solve this problem?
34:32
And is it still acceptable for patients to, restart the treatment
34:36
Laurence Adrieans: because these treatments are costly.
34:38
People.
34:39
And they're also time cost also.
34:40
It's a surgery cost.
34:41
Yeah, it's a surgery.
34:41
It's not just in and out.
34:43
It's a surgery.
34:45
It's already much less invasive than maybe in the past, but it's still a surgery.
34:50
Andreas Utz: Thanks a lot, Lauren.
34:51
So we have a new let's say habit that we want to create.
34:55
That's also, that our guests can ask a question to us.
34:58
Okay.
34:58
Not only us asking questions to the guests, and I know laws you
35:01
have prepared a question for us.
35:02
Laurence Adrieans: I have one for you.
35:04
Yes.
35:04
So my question to you would be what is the strategy of the company to evolve
35:11
as a premium product provider and then also not only on the local basis, but
35:16
also globally obviously, and in which kind of fields of implant industry
35:22
would you direct this evolution?
35:27
Andreas Utz: I can take this, George.
35:28
Yeah.
35:28
It's
35:28
George Raeber: he will take two hours, but it's a very good question.
35:30
So it's a
35:30
Andreas Utz: very good question, and obviously a question
35:32
that we, we think about a lot
35:34
George Raeber: every day.
35:34
Yeah.
35:35
Andreas Utz: The way we look at this is implant dentistry is a demanding
35:39
yet very successful treatment option for practice, and patients deserve
35:45
a responsible approach to it, and they deserve a long term outcome.
35:49
As I think you, you alluded.
35:51
To this.
35:51
So for us to achieve this, there, I think there are three pillars that
35:55
are really key and close to our heart.
35:57
The first one, there's no doubt, is innovation.
36:00
We still believe that there's a lot of stuff that we can innovate and
36:04
we can still improve the treatments the treatment quality, the treatment
36:09
efficiency, the treatment speed for patients, but also for clinicAdriaenss.
36:14
So there is.
36:15
Innovation and technology that we can still do in material
36:17
and implant componentry.
36:19
We still have a lot of ideas more ideas than we can work on George,
36:22
fortunately, that we can do.
36:23
But there's also innovation in the field, of workflows applying a lot of
36:28
digital tools for planification and making implant workflows more convenient
36:32
and efficient for patients, but also ultimately for our clinicAdriaenss.
36:36
So innovation is really key in all of this and really that's a strong belief.
36:40
All of this based on scientific evidence.
36:43
We are not doing innovation without proving that ultimately,
36:47
the new product is a better product than what we had before.
36:49
So scientific evidence is still something that, that we invest a lot into.
36:53
Yeah.
36:54
The second pillar I think that is very important is really education.
36:57
As you said it before, we really need to make sure that everybody has the chance to
37:01
provide the best possible care to patient.
37:04
And this requires.
37:06
Great products, but it requires also amazing clinical skills.
37:10
And I imagine it's really difficult to approach a new
37:13
patient to identify his problem.
37:15
What is the best strategy to solve this and then applying
37:19
it clinically in the field.
37:20
So education is really I would say the second key pillar that, that we see.
37:24
And then the third pillar that is we are very passionate about is service
37:29
and support, really helping practices.
37:33
To be service and support, to be there when there are issues, when there
37:36
are problems that that we can help.
37:38
Because we know also for practices, implant industry is demanding.
37:42
One of the most demanding treatments you do every day in practice
37:45
for you, but also for your team.
37:46
So that's something that we feel is very important.
37:49
And you mentioned also the geography dimension.
37:52
Of course, implant industry is evolving globally, we see
37:55
a lot of geographies evolving.
37:57
And then this is, where in new geographies and developing geographies,
38:01
of course we bring in great products based on science, but there we realize
38:05
education and also service is key to, to really make sure we are starting
38:10
on the right foot with infants.
38:12
So you, I think we could spend two days on this topic and maybe
38:15
we do at one point, but thanks.
38:18
For the great question Lauren, so you're welcome.
38:20
This already brings us a bit to the end of this podcast, so really enjoyed it.
38:24
And a question to George.
38:25
For the last 30 to 40 minutes, what stood out for you with Laurence?
38:29
George Raeber: What stood out for me, Laurence, is really your personality
38:32
and how you combine your energy and your drive with the desire to meet patients'
38:39
demands, needs, and expectations.
38:41
So I think you're a great role model that really stood out for
38:44
me in the sense that you're.
38:46
You're upfront, you're, let's say, very modern in terms of technology,
38:50
but also being present in social media.
38:53
But at the same time I feel that your heart is with, you want to provide
38:57
the best possible care to patients.
38:59
And that Andres stood really out for me.
39:01
Andreas Utz: Super, super good summary.
39:03
I would wish, you a great role model and that you inspire a lot of young,
39:06
talented clinicAdriaenss, be it female or male to follow your example.
39:11
And this brings us to the end.
39:13
Of this Pro Talk series with Dr. Lauren Adriaenss.
39:16
So thanks for listening in.
39:18
Follow us and subscribe the podcast on Spotify or Apple Podcast or on YouTube.

39:30
This is best done on our Instagram account from Stroman Global.
39:34
So whenever we have future guests.
39:36
We try to engage you, we want to let you know and please post your
39:39
question and maybe your question will make it to the next podcast.
39:43
Thanks for listening in.
39:44
Thanks, George.
39:45
Thanks, Laurence.
39:46
George Raeber: Thanks Andreas.
39:47
Thanks Laura.
39:48
Laurence Adrieans: Thanks Andreas.
39:48
And thanks George.
39:49
It was a pleasure.
39:50
Thank you.
