- 0:00Hey everybody, this is your GM, your back row,
- 0:02Dom, it's your GM, who currently is not on the
- 0:03team right now, but don't you worry about it,
- 0:05Kale, here to bring you episode 9 of the Stack
- 0:07and Shed series. Now, in this series, we're covering
- 0:09all 32 teams, so everybody gets a chance to be
- 0:12talked about, alright? Now, in this series, we're
- 0:14covering a few different topics, and they include
- 0:16what went wrong, what do they need, Stack or
- 0:19Shed, their draft picks, one move I would do
- 0:23in their cap space. Now in this episode, we're
- 0:25talking about the Cowboys, all right? So all
- 0:27my Cowboys fans, wipe those tears from your eyes.
- 0:29Everything's going to be all right. And just
- 0:31know you guys are not going to the Super Bowl
- 0:32anytime soon. But how about them Cowboys? All
- 0:43right, let's get into it. So what went wrong
- 0:45in the Cowboys season? And I will venture to
- 0:47say it was a lack of defensive production. In
- 0:50the past few years, the defense has become an
- 0:52eyesore that Jerry Jones can no longer ignore.
- 0:55Although the Cowboys acquired Kenny Clark and
- 0:57Quentin Williams via trade, I was never under
- 1:00the impression that this team was going to go
- 1:01anywhere because the secondary was still a major
- 1:04problem. And here you have a defense that wasn't
- 1:06able to create turnovers, stop explosive plays,
- 1:09create pressure on the quarterback, or stop the
- 1:12run. According to NFL Pro, The Cowboys' defense
- 1:16last year ranked 30th in the league, and they
- 1:18allowed 30 .1 points per game, 377 yards per
- 1:22game, 6 .1 yards per play, and 59 touchdowns.
- 1:27They were dead last in pass defense and they
- 1:29allowed 251 .5 passing yards per game, 7 .2 passing
- 1:33yards per play, and 35 passing touchdowns. They
- 1:36were 23rd in run defense and they allowed 125
- 1:40.5 rushing yards per game, 4 .7 rushing yards
- 1:43per play, and 24 rushing touchdowns. Now we can
- 1:46blame the players on missed assignments, missed
- 1:48tackles, missed interceptions, bad block shedding,
- 1:52all those different areas. You know that Matt
- 1:55Iberflues isn't a good coach. So why would you
- 1:57go out your way to hire him when you know that
- 2:00in recent years, he hasn't done a good job? According
- 2:03to Sumer Sports and Matt Iberflues' first year
- 2:07as the head coach for the Chicago Bears, they
- 2:09were 29th in total defense and they allowed 375
- 2:13.9 yards per game. They were 32nd in scoring
- 2:17defense and they allowed 27 .2 points per game.
- 2:20His second year with the Bears. They were 20th
- 2:23in total defense, and they allowed 350 .4 yards
- 2:27per game. They were 20th in scoring defense,
- 2:30and they allowed 23 .9 points per game. His third
- 2:33year with the Bears, they were 13th in total
- 2:36defense, and they allowed 330 .5 yards per game.
- 2:40And they were 13th in scoring defense, and they
- 2:42allowed 21 .8 points per game. Now, of course,
- 2:46when we look at his tenure with the Cowboys,
- 2:48they were 30th in total defense, and they allowed
- 2:50377 yards per game. And they were dead last in
- 2:54scoring defense, and they allowed 30 .1 points
- 2:57per game. Now, does that sound like a successful
- 2:59defensive mind? No. Now, Jerry Jones deserved
- 3:02a majority of the blame because you give the
- 3:04thumbs up or thumbs down to any person that's
- 3:07on this team. And how is it that you can go this
- 3:10long without properly investing into this defense?
- 3:13You have opportunities just as everybody else
- 3:16does to fix your problems on your team, but you
- 3:19choose not to. You choose to neglect it and say,
- 3:22we have this high -powered offense. That's all
- 3:24we need to win games. That's what's going to
- 3:26get us to the Super Bowl. And that's not going
- 3:28to work because defense still wins championships.
- 3:31Now, with that being said, what do the Cowboys
- 3:33need? And that is better defensive players and
- 3:35scheme. Now, they've already accomplished one
- 3:37of their needs in hiring Christian Parker as
- 3:40their new defensive coordinator, which I think
- 3:41that could be a really... good hire, but only
- 3:43time will tell. The other part is going to require
- 3:46a huge investment to this defense in both free
- 3:49agency and in the draft. Now, with that being
- 3:52said, the question we all need to ask ourselves
- 3:54is stack or shed? And I will eventually say stack.
- 3:57And the reason why I say that is because the
- 3:59offense is in a really good space. All you need
- 4:01is just this defense to hold up their end of
- 4:03the bargain. When we look at their draft picks,
- 4:05they have two first round picks, a fourth, three
- 4:08fifth round picks, and two seventh round picks,
- 4:10which isn't bad. But the question is this, is
- 4:13Jerry Jones going to use one or both of those
- 4:15first round picks to acquire a high end defensive
- 4:18talent? And if so, who's it going to be? Because
- 4:21the first person that comes to mind is Max Crosby.
- 4:23Now, the one move that I would do is double dip
- 4:25at defensive back. And that's solely because
- 4:28this secondary has been lacking talent for a
- 4:31very long time. Having the 12th and 20th pick
- 4:34in the first round is a really good spot to be
- 4:36in because you're not too high, you're not too
- 4:38low. But the question is this, Are you going
- 4:41to attack corner or safety first? If you can
- 4:44get someone like an Emmanuel McNeil Warren, if
- 4:46you get someone like an Adam Thielman, I think
- 4:49that's a really good selection. Now, corner is
- 4:52tricky because there's a limited amount of prospects
- 4:54with true first round grades. The only people
- 4:57that come to mind is Avion Terrell, Mansour Delane,
- 5:00Colton Hood, and Gerard McCoy. Now, the best
- 5:03place to get a corner is in the second round.
- 5:05As I've said before in previous episodes in this
- 5:08series, I believe that the second and third round
- 5:11is the sweet spot in this draft. If you can pluck
- 5:14Chris Johnson in the second round, I think that's
- 5:16a great pick. because I think he has all the
- 5:19intangibles to be a true dominant outside corner.
- 5:22When we look at the Cowboys cap situation, they
- 5:24have negative 31 .1 million, which we all know
- 5:27that's going to change because Jerry just announced
- 5:29a couple of days ago that they're going to restructure
- 5:31Dak, CeeDee Lambs, and one of our offensive linemen's
- 5:34contract to create 66 million in cap space. I
- 5:37expect for them to do something with Quentin
- 5:39Williams and Kenny Clark's contract, which is
- 5:42interesting because according to Spoltrak, Kenny
- 5:46Clark has an $11 million roster bonus that kicks
- 5:48in on the third day of the new league year, but
- 5:51he carries a $21 .5 million cap hit this year.
- 5:55However, when we look at Quentin Williams' contract,
- 5:58he has a $20 .7 million base salary this year
- 6:01and is carrying a $21 .6 million cap hit. Now,
- 6:05I would give a longer term extension to Quinton
- 6:08Williams and a short term extension to Kenny
- 6:10Clark. So that way you can bring down their cap
- 6:13hits while at the same time keeping them on the
- 6:15team for the foreseeable future. Now, my impression
- 6:18is that the Cowboys won't be as active in that
- 6:20first wave of free agency because they're going
- 6:23to try to hash out a deal with George Pickens.
- 6:25But I do expect for the Cowboys to pick things
- 6:27up in that second and third wave of free agency.
- 6:30Now, could Jerry surprise us? Sure. But I don't
- 6:33think the Cowboys are going to go after. Trey
- 6:35Hendrickson or Boye Mafi or Tyreek Woolen or
- 6:38Kobe Bryant or Khalil Mack or, I don't know,
- 6:40Adafia Way or Devin Lloyd, just to name a few.
- 6:43I think at best, they're probably going to get
- 6:45some people that are probably familiar with the
- 6:47Cowboys or familiar with the coaching staff,
- 6:50and they're just going to say, oh, these are
- 6:52the big splashy moves that we made. but only
- 6:54time will tell. But I'm going to end this episode
