- 1:22Speaker 3: And I want to thank you everyone for taking the
- 1:26Speaker 3: time and listening to my stories. And you know, when
- 1:33Speaker 3: I started this podcast, I've been hoping to not share
- 1:42Speaker 3: only my love for the paranormal and the ghost stories,
- 1:47Speaker 3: share them with you and to research and to find
- 1:53Speaker 3: what's out there as far as the paranormal and explain
- 1:58Speaker 3: some of them. I seem personal, but it's for me
- 2:04Speaker 3: to share with you that, you know, I grew up
- 2:08Speaker 3: in a very small town. Yeah it's haunted around the places,
- 2:15Speaker 3: but in that small town, you know, I went to school,
- 2:22Speaker 3: I got my diploma. Yeah, I went to some college.
- 2:25Speaker 3: But I have some learning disabilities. I have this sexia
- 2:32Speaker 3: and sometimes when I read the stories, you know, sometimes
- 2:36Speaker 3: I fumble on words. But with sharing this with you guys,
- 2:43Speaker 3: and it helps me to suppress that much as I
- 2:54Speaker 3: can and to learn and to become a better reader,
- 2:59Speaker 3: better storyteller, and with you guys listening to my stories,
- 3:04Speaker 3: I should appreciate it. And I love you guys for
- 3:08Speaker 3: it and for you guys, And I looked at my
- 3:15Speaker 3: numbers and everything, and you guys are extraordinary and I
- 3:20Speaker 3: wanted to give you, guys around my applause and from
- 3:23Speaker 3: a bottom of my heart, thank you for making Ghost
- 3:28Speaker 3: Stories and the Unusual Paranormal podcast a true thing and
- 3:37Speaker 3: you know close to my heart and make it so
- 3:40Speaker 3: real for me, and without you wouldn't be a podcast
- 3:45Speaker 3: so thanking, here's my applause to you guys, and onto
- 3:56Speaker 3: the show. You know today we're going from the White
- 4:02Speaker 3: House in Washington, d C. We're gonna jump across the
- 4:06Speaker 3: street as you would say, and we're gonna go to Virginia.
- 4:14Speaker 3: And with significant historic destinations like Colonial Williamsburg, Monticello, Jamestown,
- 4:25Speaker 3: and Mount Vernon, Virginia drugs countless visitors looking to learn
- 4:31Speaker 3: more about the Commonwealth's past each year. In addition to
- 4:37Speaker 3: these monumental landmarks, if you walk more than ten a
- 4:43Speaker 3: few feet in any direction Virginia, you're about to guarantee
- 4:49Speaker 3: to step foot into hollow grounds of American evolution, battlefields
- 4:57Speaker 3: or a Civil War Civil Wars site. But as such,
- 5:03Speaker 3: a rich history also brings the eerie sides effects. A
- 5:10Speaker 3: long list supposedly haunted sites. Virginia has more than a
- 5:17Speaker 3: share of ghost stories, and we have compiled a few
- 5:22Speaker 3: of the spookious locations that were to open to open
- 5:27Speaker 3: to you guys that experienced the truly haunted and now
- 5:34Speaker 3: come coming up folloween when you visit these ghostly grounds.
- 5:39Speaker 3: And before we start this story, I want to remind
- 5:43Speaker 3: you that October is also OUIGI Awareness months. Again, I
- 5:54Speaker 3: pour you Ouiji. Boards are not to deal with. A
- 6:02Speaker 3: lot of people like to deal with them, but if
- 6:06Speaker 3: you don't close them correctly, you will cause monumental problems.
- 6:14Speaker 3: You probably make your house more haunted than Hell, or
- 6:19Speaker 3: you would bring in the gates of Hell and you
- 6:22Speaker 3: might release a demon or two. Or you might become
- 6:28Speaker 3: like the exorses and you might become possessed. So my
- 6:34Speaker 3: ideal for the month of October, please do not play
- 6:39Speaker 3: with Luigi boards. And now onto our story. You know
- 6:49Speaker 3: we had the Gatsby's Tavern Museum, originally bill as a
- 6:53Speaker 3: tavern and inn where worrely travels rest at this Gadsby's
- 7:01Speaker 3: Tavern Museum is sight of the one of the most
- 7:05Speaker 3: curious mysteries in Virginia history. In eighteen sixteen, a young
- 7:13Speaker 3: woman traveled to Alexandria on a ship with her husband,
- 7:19Speaker 3: contracting a disease on her journey that led them to
- 7:25Speaker 3: seek rest and rehabilitation at the end. However, once brought
- 7:32Speaker 3: unto Gabby or Gadsby's, her health quickly deteriorated, and her
- 7:39Speaker 3: on her deathbed, she made all the people that attended
- 7:44Speaker 3: or sweart on old to never reveal her identity. To
- 7:49Speaker 3: this day, no one knows who she was, and she
- 7:54Speaker 3: was buried in Saint Paul's Cemetery with the graystone marked
- 7:59Speaker 3: female Stranger. Both cemetery, located near Duke Street, and Room
- 8:06Speaker 3: eight of Gatsby's Tavern is supposedly haunted by a ghost
- 8:12Speaker 3: of a young woman forever unknown, yet never forgotten. The
- 8:20Speaker 3: battleship was Constant, one of the largest battleships to have
- 8:26Speaker 3: ever been built by the US Navy. Battleship Wisconsin looms
- 8:33Speaker 3: large over nakas Nantuchtis Museum and downtown Norfolk's Waterside Drive.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Take a self guided tour of the ship or tickets
- 8:51Speaker 3: to the guided tours. There you can hear all about
- 8:55Speaker 3: the stories a former military servicemen and the ghosts that
- 9:00Speaker 3: are said to now roam the ship. Want to get
- 9:04Speaker 3: even spookier experience on this haunted vessel, museum hosts over
- 9:11Speaker 3: night stays on the ship, giving you a chance to
- 9:18Speaker 3: proportionally meet the spirits firsthand. We've got the Oak Brave
- 9:29Speaker 3: Oak Grove Cemetery in Lexton, Virginia. There's numerous historical sites.
- 9:36Speaker 3: A few are creepy as the Oak Grove Cemetery where
- 9:40Speaker 3: numerous Confederate general has laid to rest, take it to
- 9:46Speaker 3: her Lexington and ends in the cemetery with the Haunta
- 9:50Speaker 3: tells Lexton's Ghost Tour, where entertainers dress in old fashioned
- 9:58Speaker 3: attire take you back through the history of Lexington and
- 10:02Speaker 3: chilling tales that may believe there are ghost Roman in
- 10:06Speaker 3: the region, especially during Halloween, some events where they have
- 10:12Speaker 3: seen Jackson and if you Confederate in the fellow Confederate
- 10:18Speaker 3: General Robert Elee on his horse traveler as they wandered
- 10:26Speaker 3: down now unfamiliar streets in Lexington. And we're going to
- 10:36Speaker 3: start with our first story. We're going to start at
- 10:50Speaker 3: the Saint Albans Sanitarium and Saint Albans Sanatarium in Radford,
- 11:01Speaker 3: Virginia was also or held hostages, soldiers, bullied, bullied boys,
- 11:16Speaker 3: and the mentally ill Redford Sanitarium offers ghosts aplenty. In
- 11:26Speaker 3: Saint Albans, Saturn today, where pain and torment were experienced
- 11:34Speaker 3: on a daily basis. Ghosts we are short to dwell
- 11:41Speaker 3: and a few places are as accurately stained with agony
- 11:47Speaker 3: and as an old mental hospitals just because both of
- 11:53Speaker 3: their facilities and staff left much to be desired in
- 11:59Speaker 3: eighteen hundred. It's the mentally ill were basically laborraths for
- 12:04Speaker 3: doctors who were more eager to test out experimental procedures
- 12:11Speaker 3: on them. As results, the dead usually outnumbered the living
- 12:17Speaker 3: in early and sanitariums. Those who weren't killed during some
- 12:24Speaker 3: plot pilot medical trial usually just chose to oft themselves
- 12:33Speaker 3: in suicide. So depressing were hospital environments. Thus many of
- 12:39Speaker 3: those old mental institutions are rumored to be haunted. The
- 12:45Speaker 3: only one has beaten out other types of paranormally busy
- 12:52Speaker 3: sites such as cemeteries and battlefilds to come known as
- 12:59Speaker 3: the most active location on the East Coast, and that
- 13:04Speaker 3: is Saint Alban Sanitarium. The hospital's haunted story begins before
- 13:11Speaker 3: it was even built. Saint Alban's Sanitarium is located in Redford, Virginia.
- 13:19Speaker 3: During the seventeen hundreds, the city's closed preimity to the
- 13:24Speaker 3: New River Watershed attracted Native Americans in early European settlers
- 13:31Speaker 3: alike competition over the competition over the area result in
- 13:40Speaker 3: hostilities between two groups, and July seventeen fifty five, a
- 13:46Speaker 3: group of Shawnee Indians brought tensions to a climax as
- 13:52Speaker 3: they attacked and looted the colonists of Drapers Hall by
- 13:58Speaker 3: a Draper's medal, killing at least five people and taken
- 14:03Speaker 3: others as hostage. Two survivors the Shawnee left behind Risley
- 14:12Speaker 3: reminders of the wrath. The light bought couple, for instance,
- 14:20Speaker 3: was presented to with a bag of a bag containing
- 14:28Speaker 3: the disc disccapitated head of Philip that bar Barger. Mary
- 14:39Speaker 3: Draper Ingalls was one of those held ransom by the
- 14:44Speaker 3: Shawnee town of sanat Sonato. Before she was taken prisoner,
- 14:52Speaker 3: Mary first had to witness the gruesome deaths of her
- 14:56Speaker 3: fellow colonists, including her other and sister in law's baby.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Though there were variations and what she saw, all accounts
- 15:10Speaker 3: were extremely bloody. For Eleanor Draper, she was tomahawked and skelped.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Betty Draper's infant child was brained against the side of
- 15:25Speaker 3: one of the cabins. Mary and evenually managed to flee
- 15:33Speaker 3: from the Shoshanto, but her journey back home was not
- 15:38Speaker 3: an easy one. Some sources say she was forced to
- 15:43Speaker 3: abandon the baby she had given birth during her captivity.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Others claimed that her fellow escapee, a German woman tempted
- 15:54Speaker 3: to eat her twice so Hungary, where her parents pair
- 15:59Speaker 3: during their forty three day and one thousand mile treks.
- 16:08Speaker 3: World lady said, I didn't want to du little Damerism. Huh.
- 16:17Speaker 3: The horrors of married draper ingles faced during the Drapers
- 16:23Speaker 3: Draper's Medal massacre. The first to contribute to Saint Albans
- 16:29Speaker 3: Santorium is scary past. Next up where the soldiers endured
- 16:35Speaker 3: during one of the Civil wars most violent battles, the
- 16:39Speaker 3: Battle of Floyd's Mountain. According to Saint Albans Union Artillery
- 16:46Speaker 3: bandit bombarded the settlement of Central Depot from the ridge
- 16:52Speaker 3: where Saint Albans stands today. This explains why many people
- 16:59Speaker 3: have visited the building. Report here in rifle shots of
- 17:03Speaker 3: smelling gun smoke and seeing a spectral miss rising up
- 17:09Speaker 3: the hospitals surrounding grounds. Saint alban Sanitarium was constructed in
- 17:16Speaker 3: eighteen ninety two, although a first function as a Lutheran
- 17:23Speaker 3: boys school. Unfortunately, for George W. Miles, a man behind
- 17:31Speaker 3: the schools and inception, students were a far cry from
- 17:37Speaker 3: the future southern gentleman we had. He had envisioned. As headmaster,
- 17:46Speaker 3: Miles demanded the boys to perform well in classrooms and
- 17:51Speaker 3: on sports fields. To meet such high expectations, many would
- 17:59Speaker 3: turn to dream methods. Saint Albans thus quickly developed a
- 18:06Speaker 3: reputation for being a rough and competitive school where bullying
- 18:13Speaker 3: was not only condoned, but it was encouraged. Seven Hated
- 18:22Speaker 3: Athletic rivalry or seven hated athletic rivalries may have allowed
- 18:32Speaker 3: Saint Albans to and sincere numerous football championships, but they
- 18:41Speaker 3: also made homicides and suicides frequent occurrences on the campus.
- 18:52Speaker 3: After Miles's death in nineteen oh three, enrollment at Saint
- 18:57Speaker 3: Albans quickly fell, and also then eight years later, in
- 19:02Speaker 3: nineteen sixteen, doctor John C. King required the property to
- 19:08Speaker 3: now fulfill his vision introducing the nation's first tap not
- 19:17Speaker 3: psychotraatic hospital. Unhappy with the conditions that the Southern Southwestern
- 19:28Speaker 3: lunatic sylum during his stint was as superintendent, doctor King
- 19:37Speaker 3: wanted to open an institution where patients would be both
- 19:41Speaker 3: well treated and well I accommodated. Thus, he made several
- 19:49Speaker 3: renovations to the school's runnuments, even adding a farm to
- 19:57Speaker 3: the property in order to get patients or place to
- 20:01Speaker 3: exercise and play. Unfortunately, just as Miles School didn't produce
- 20:08Speaker 3: that gentleman who would want it, neither would King Saint
- 20:13Speaker 3: Alban Sanitarium deliver its goal on high recoveries. The history
- 20:20Speaker 3: of the psychologic psychologic treatment methods during the nineteen hundreds
- 20:27Speaker 3: as a story of failures replacing failures. Insulin induced comas
- 20:34Speaker 3: and the bottomies would have leave patients either brain dead
- 20:40Speaker 3: or really dead. For example, these procedures are are so
- 20:47Speaker 3: very labor and Stinson and Saint Alban's staff to patient
- 20:52Speaker 3: ratio in nineteen forty five was a sad forty eight
- 20:59Speaker 3: to six thousand, five hundred and nine when cutting people's
- 21:03Speaker 3: skulls open provided in effective doctors up to supply shocked
- 21:12Speaker 3: them to their senses uh such a cycle. MORPHI six,
- 21:23Speaker 3: for instance, were given electroshock or electro consultative electroshock therapy,
- 21:32Speaker 3: which was deemed safer than insulin coma therapy. Still ect
- 21:40Speaker 3: had many possible dangerous side effects or after effects, including fractures,
- 21:49Speaker 3: severe memory loss, and spontaneous seizures. Some of the Saint
- 21:56Speaker 3: Alban sanarium most active rooms are the hydro hydro therapies
- 22:05Speaker 3: were conducted. A hydro therapy session and not always always
- 22:10Speaker 3: involved it breafed relaxed so in a bathtub. No patients weren't.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Patients weren't were modified and were modified in icy cold
- 22:27Speaker 3: towels and were stripped into steaming water vats, where they
- 22:35Speaker 3: lay immobile and confined for days. Others were blasted with
- 22:42Speaker 3: water from a fire hose.
- 22:46Speaker 1: No wonder.
- 22:46Speaker 3: One of these rooms is now known as the suicide bathroom.
- 22:52Speaker 3: There are many other rooms in the sanitarium that are
- 22:57Speaker 3: apparently normally hot. Bowling Alley in the basement, for instance,
- 23:03Speaker 3: is known to be haunted by two female spirits. One
- 23:07Speaker 3: his name is Ali and the other name is Gina
- 23:11Speaker 3: Rene Hall. Ali is rumored to be the young daughter
- 23:17Speaker 3: of one of the hospital's patients, and Gina was one
- 23:24Speaker 3: of the women who was murdered on June twenty eighth,
- 23:28Speaker 3: nineteen eighty, somewhere close to Saint Alban Sanitarium along Hazel
- 23:34Speaker 3: Hollow Road. In the nineteen nineties, the Carlton Health System
- 23:42Speaker 3: required the Saint Alban Sanitarium, but vacated the property and
- 23:49Speaker 3: two thousand and three, perhaps ghosts drive them out after
- 23:54Speaker 3: a brief stint as an a bandit side of the
- 24:00Speaker 3: vandalism and late night parties, Alban's got a attention of
- 24:07Speaker 3: Tim Gregory, a previous patient at the hospital. As the
- 24:13Speaker 3: property's new owner, he made his mission to renovate its
- 24:19Speaker 3: remaining buildings and trans him to a research and the
- 24:24Speaker 3: Enlightenment Center Today. To fund these efforts is to host
- 24:31Speaker 3: a number of mascree events at Say Alban Sanitarium, between
- 24:38Speaker 3: an annual on a house Halloween extravaganza as guests for
- 24:46Speaker 3: As guests roam through the building their counter zombies and
- 24:51Speaker 3: mental patients, but can't always be sure what it's stage
- 24:57Speaker 3: or what is real. Both private and public ghost hunts
- 25:04Speaker 3: are also held at Saint Alban Sanitarium. They were They
- 25:08Speaker 3: are conducted and led by teams of paranormal experts such
- 25:13Speaker 3: as three point thirty three AM Paranormal and Seven Hills Paranormal.
- 25:21Speaker 3: During the visit in twenty eleven, three point thirty three
- 25:26Speaker 3: AM Paranormal before a ghost whispering that sounds like in
- 25:32Speaker 3: the infamous electroshock therapy room, the Black Raven Paranormal and
- 25:41Speaker 3: research a new fascinating case dropped by a Saint Alban
- 25:49Speaker 3: Sanarium in twenty thirteen, and a small bathroom located in
- 25:54Speaker 3: the women's war The infomentioned the side room. One team
- 26:02Speaker 3: member was definitely touched by something, perhaps it was one
- 26:07Speaker 3: of the ghosts of the four people rumored to have
- 26:10Speaker 3: killed themselves in the spooky laboratory. One year later, Maryland
- 26:16Speaker 3: ghost trackers but also experience a similar spirit jumping at
- 26:23Speaker 3: Saint Alvin Sanitorium burned immemorable investigation. They also recorded several
- 26:31Speaker 3: audio and a nominees and captured a strange shadow falling
- 26:38Speaker 3: down the stairs. Today, the conditions inside Saint Albans Sanitarium
- 26:45Speaker 3: are mixed of good and bad, of real and stage
- 26:49Speaker 3: damage on the walls have not been destroyed or falling apart,
- 26:55Speaker 3: graffe stains or plaster, broken wheelchairs and rusted gurnees. Light
- 27:02Speaker 3: scattered in old operation rooms and parent wards seemed more
- 27:09Speaker 3: cell blogged than dormitory staff porters are just as gloomy
- 27:16Speaker 3: as in state of disarray. Besides seeing how many terrible
- 27:21Speaker 3: things were at Saint alban Sanitarium during the nineteen hundreds,
- 27:27Speaker 3: visitors can also sense it the hospital creeks of torment
- 27:33Speaker 3: because it was it was an experience by Both patients
- 27:39Speaker 3: and staff that admitted were product and probed, abused and neglected,
- 27:48Speaker 3: and practice fires. The employed and overworked in an inexperienced
- 27:58Speaker 3: and probably became very depressed themselves. Even in death, they
- 28:03Speaker 3: cannot rest peacefully, saying Alban Sanarium thus quickly earned the
- 28:09Speaker 3: reputation for being a hotbed for paranormal activity. Much evidence
- 28:16Speaker 3: supports its nerioty. Full body apparitions have been photographed in
- 28:26Speaker 3: the old alcoholics word, for instance, to tour the tourists
- 28:32Speaker 3: and experienced ghost hunters like have heard disembodied compensations, screams
- 28:41Speaker 3: and footprints, somehow seen objects move on their own or
- 28:45Speaker 3: seen push by invisible forces themselves. The hospitals maze like
- 28:51Speaker 3: conflntation or configuration also makes it easy for visitors to
- 28:57Speaker 3: get lost, making explorations both scary and dangerous. For several
- 29:05Speaker 3: paranormal filmmakers, then Saint Alban Santorium was a perfect place
- 29:11Speaker 3: to shoot some scary scary footage. In twenty eleven, the
- 29:19Speaker 3: Rip Files featured Institution one of their web series included.
- 29:27Speaker 3: After that sci Fi's Hanic Collector team took a trip
- 29:33Speaker 3: to a hospital it hopes to give it much needed
- 29:37Speaker 3: spiritual Ado at alban Sanorium also star started in the
- 29:48Speaker 3: travel channels the Dead Files. They show about the psychic
- 29:53Speaker 3: medium who turned whose teams up with the homicide detective
- 29:59Speaker 3: to the investigate places rumored to behind it. Finally, in
- 30:05Speaker 3: the Ghost Silent episode which aired on March May third,
- 30:12Speaker 3: twenty fifteen, the Tennessee Wraith Chasers conducts a successful investigation
- 30:21Speaker 3: on the property. So if you're passing through Redford, Virginia,
- 30:26Speaker 3: make sure to take a tour of Saint Albans Sanitarium.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Want to see a chair rock on its own. Stop
- 30:34Speaker 3: by the hospital's rocker room looking for exchange for some
- 30:40Speaker 3: friendly whistles with the ghost. Check out the whistle room,
- 30:46Speaker 3: hoping to encounter more hostile intenate and hostile intenity. The
- 30:53Speaker 3: boiler room would wouldn't leave you disappointed, and that one's
- 31:03Speaker 3: pretty good for the sanitarium, so check that out too.
- 31:10Speaker 3: And we're going to go to a inn or hotel.
- 31:16Speaker 3: The Martha Washington Inn per Se is a historic hotel
- 31:21Speaker 3: located in Abington, Virginia, Originally built in eighteen thirty two
- 31:27Speaker 3: by General Francis President, Hero of the War of eighteen twelve,
- 31:33Speaker 3: only for his family of nine children. Over the course
- 31:38Speaker 3: at least one hundred and seventy four years, the building
- 31:41Speaker 3: has served as an upscale women's college, a Civil War
- 31:47Speaker 3: hospital and barracks, and as a residence for visiting actors
- 31:52Speaker 3: at the Bartar Theater. In addition to hotel services, the
- 31:58Speaker 3: inn now suffers a spot as SPA treatments. I would
- 32:03Speaker 3: like to go to this spa treatment. The Martha Washington
- 32:06Speaker 3: Hotel and Spa is a member of the Historic Hotels
- 32:11Speaker 3: of America, the official program of the National Trust of
- 32:15Speaker 3: Historic Preservation. In eighteen thirty two, General Francis Preston built
- 32:24Speaker 3: the brick residence for his family at a cost of
- 32:28Speaker 3: fifteen thousand dollars. The mansion redeemed in President's family possession
- 32:38Speaker 3: until eighteen fifty eight, when it was sold at the
- 32:42Speaker 3: cost of twenty one thousand dollars to founders of Martha
- 32:46Speaker 3: Washington College. College was devoted to entirely to women, operated
- 32:54Speaker 3: for seventy years until finally succumbing to the Great Depression.
- 33:00Speaker 3: At the time of the Civil War, the college served
- 33:03Speaker 3: as a training ground for the Confederate Unit and Washington
- 33:08Speaker 3: Mounted Rifles. After various spirmishures between the United States and
- 33:14Speaker 3: the Confederate Forces. Wounded were brought into the school for treatment.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Was also during this time period that the building attended
- 33:24Speaker 3: the nickname the Martha. Along the post war alumni was
- 33:31Speaker 3: the vallec Victorian with a class of eighteen eighty, Natalie
- 33:38Speaker 3: Nugent Summer, a Summer Bill who would go to become
- 33:45Speaker 3: the first woman elected the Mississippi Legislator. The atcultural integrity
- 33:55Speaker 3: of Martha I'd been preserved for over one hundred and
- 33:59Speaker 3: fifty years. The original living room of the President family
- 34:03Speaker 3: is now the main lobby of the Inn. One of
- 34:07Speaker 3: the original items owned by the President family is a
- 34:12Speaker 3: Dutch barbecue grandfather clock which measures over nine feet tall.
- 34:23Speaker 3: That's a big clock. This beautiful clock, which is shipped
- 34:28Speaker 3: was shipped from England by one of the president daughters,
- 34:32Speaker 3: now takes his rightful place in the east parlor of
- 34:35Speaker 3: the Inn. After passing through the various hands over the
- 34:41Speaker 3: next three years, in nineteen thirty five, the Martha Washington
- 34:44Speaker 3: Inn opened. The inn had operated ever since the capacity
- 34:51Speaker 3: of a hotel. Nineteen eighty four, the United Group Invested
- 34:56Speaker 3: group of businessmen purchased the inn and paid for an
- 35:01Speaker 3: eight million dollar renovation. That's pretty cool. Even even eleven
- 35:10Speaker 3: years later, the property was admitted to the Cambery Collection
- 35:19Speaker 3: of Historic Places. Today, marth Washington Inn serves as both
- 35:25Speaker 3: a hotel and spa. Many famous guests have spent the
- 35:30Speaker 3: night at Martha Washington Inn, including Eleanor Roosevelt, President and
- 35:37Speaker 3: we As Truman, Lady Bird Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and Elizabeth Taylor.
- 35:45Speaker 3: The hotels also played host to actors performing the Bartard Theater,
- 35:50Speaker 3: which adjacent to the Inn, but now the actors usually
- 35:54Speaker 3: stay at the Partner in this story is about a
- 36:01Speaker 3: tragic globe affair between a student and Martha Washington College
- 36:07Speaker 3: and their Yankee sweetheart. Although still at girls college, Martha
- 36:12Speaker 3: Washington College served as a hospital during World War Two.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Several of the girls did not return home during the war,
- 36:23Speaker 3: but bravely volunteer stayed at the school as nurses. Captain
- 36:30Speaker 3: John Stoves, a Yankee officer, was severely wounded and captured
- 36:36Speaker 3: in town. Soldiers carried Captain Stoves through the case system
- 36:41Speaker 3: under the Abington and up the secret stairway to the
- 36:47Speaker 3: third floor of the building. Captain Stoves they gravely bravely
- 36:52Speaker 3: wounded in what is now roomed four or three for weeks.
- 36:58Speaker 3: A young student named Beth nurse and cared for him.
- 37:02Speaker 3: She found herself falling in love with this brave captain
- 37:08Speaker 3: and returned to her statements often. Both often Beth would
- 37:18Speaker 3: lovely played the violin to ease his pain and suffering.
- 37:23Speaker 3: But their love was not to last for very long
- 37:27Speaker 3: as they As he was laying dying, he called play something, Beth,
- 37:34Speaker 3: I'm going Unfortunately, Beth was too late to escort him
- 37:40Speaker 3: out with a song, because he died suddenly. Beth tearfully
- 37:47Speaker 3: played sweet Southern Melody as a tribute to them. When
- 37:53Speaker 3: a Confederate soldier entered the room and explained that he
- 37:57Speaker 3: was taking Captain Stoves as a prisoner, Beth faced him
- 38:01Speaker 3: triumphantly and said he had been pardoned by an officer
- 38:08Speaker 3: higher than General Robert E.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Lee.
- 38:12Speaker 3: Captain Stoves is dead. Beth died a few weeks later
- 38:18Speaker 3: from typhloid fever. Many of the female students who later
- 38:23Speaker 3: attended the college, as well as the unemployees and guests,
- 38:28Speaker 3: of her best sweet violin music at night. Others report
- 38:33Speaker 3: that Beth visits Wing four oh three to comfort her
- 38:37Speaker 3: Yankee soldier. A young Confederate soldier in Abington was assigned
- 38:45Speaker 3: to carry important papers about the location of the Union
- 38:49Speaker 3: army to General Robert E.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Lee.
- 38:52Speaker 3: He was reportedly in love with a young woman at
- 38:55Speaker 3: the college. Now on the risk he was facing, the
- 39:00Speaker 3: brave soldier felt he must say parewell to his lady love.
- 39:07Speaker 3: His lady love before leaving. The soldier traveled through the
- 39:12Speaker 3: cave system underlying the alban and used it as a
- 39:18Speaker 3: secret stairway to early enter the college. As the soldier
- 39:24Speaker 3: saying as goodbye to his love, two Union officers came
- 39:28Speaker 3: upstairs and found them with no way to escape. The
- 39:32Speaker 3: young Confederate soldier was shot in front of his sweetheart,
- 39:37Speaker 3: and then he fell as his blood stained. That his
- 39:43Speaker 3: blood stained the floor. The strange thing that through the
- 39:48Speaker 3: years the bloodstain continues to appear. Carpets over the area
- 39:53Speaker 3: seemed to develop mysterious oles over the stains. Even after
- 39:59Speaker 3: the floors have been referred to or finished, the sting
- 40:03Speaker 3: continues to reappear, a sad reminder of the tragedy of
- 40:09Speaker 3: the Civil War. A phantom horse waits for its master.
- 40:14Speaker 3: I'll say the front steps a Union soldier that was
- 40:18Speaker 3: shot in front of the house in eighteen sixty four,
- 40:22Speaker 3: on moonless nights, the horse had been seen roam in
- 40:27Speaker 3: the grounds, searching for his owner and waiting to call
- 40:32Speaker 3: the ride home. Basement of the Saint Martha Inn holds
- 40:39Speaker 3: the spirits of black slaves. They are kept in an
- 40:42Speaker 3: underground chamber and somewhere buried within the stone walls. Numerous
- 40:50Speaker 3: accounts of the soldier hobbling with the help of a
- 40:54Speaker 3: crutch and leaving the trail of mud in his way
- 40:59Speaker 3: up and reported in the hallway of the Inn, Last long,
- 41:06Speaker 3: last medical help. There are only separate speculation why they
- 41:11Speaker 3: were there at the old hospital, a ball leaving only
- 41:18Speaker 3: a ball, leaving only a hinderous manacle of a bone
- 41:24Speaker 3: and sprouse flesh split its head. The tunnel once connected
- 41:33Speaker 3: the Martha Washington Inn with the Barber Theater. The entrance
- 41:39Speaker 3: to the inns set to close for the several years,
- 41:45Speaker 3: but section below the theater still runs electric cables. Actors
- 41:53Speaker 3: who used the tunnel to walk between the Inn and
- 41:57Speaker 3: theater in nineteen thirties and forty is reported counting the
- 42:02Speaker 3: Monstus spirit. The specter have never seen by it since
- 42:07Speaker 3: as a strong evil presence. The spirit we believed to
- 42:11Speaker 3: have a other than man who killed then tunnel collapsed
- 42:15Speaker 3: in eighteen ninety or a Confederate soldiers who used the
- 42:19Speaker 3: tunnel smoke ammunition until the basements during the Civil War.
- 42:34Speaker 3: That's pretty cool. Yeah, oh see.
- 42:45Speaker 1: That.
- 42:46Speaker 3: There have been reports on the tour hauntings on the
- 42:50Speaker 3: on the tours while leading a ghost tour, wills or
- 43:00Speaker 3: sometimes strange happened. To this day, I still have no
- 43:06Speaker 3: explanation for it. I have found anyone else with this
- 43:12Speaker 3: significant explanation for us. Earlier, I've taken my four group
- 43:19Speaker 3: to a place where the horrible crimes once happened, the
- 43:29Speaker 3: steam tunnels. I shine my flashlight through the tunnels. Great
- 43:35Speaker 3: to my group. Good, try to see down the bottom
- 43:39Speaker 3: of the tunnel. I told my group not to expect
- 43:42Speaker 3: to see much because the heavy rain. The downpour made
- 43:47Speaker 3: it to see. I couldn't see much of the helps
- 43:50Speaker 3: to a walkway at the bottom of the tunnel. Well,
- 43:53Speaker 3: we walked down anyway. Suddenly, through the rain, we all
- 43:58Speaker 3: watched the three foot appear. Whoa and look down it
- 44:09Speaker 3: Suddenly the rain three footprints appear one other one after another.
- 44:16Speaker 3: The footprints seemed to slowly walking through the water. There
- 44:20Speaker 3: was nothing else moving in or out of the water.
- 44:24Speaker 3: There were no frogs, rats, or any other animal making
- 44:28Speaker 3: these shapes. No one dropped anything through the gates. Are
- 44:33Speaker 3: the great to make the water move like that. Brain
- 44:36Speaker 3: wasn't making those footsteps. It couldn't do that. We're no
- 44:41Speaker 3: clear explanations for the footsteps in sight. My group's frogs,
- 44:47Speaker 3: so did I. We are terrified. My groups looked at
- 44:52Speaker 3: me and measure of fear and denial, as if we
- 44:56Speaker 3: could just possibly be real. I've never seen some kind
- 45:02Speaker 3: of special effects or to fake it, you know. I
- 45:07Speaker 3: was scared and surprised that they were from the terror
- 45:10Speaker 3: in my face. We all realized that these foot footsteps
- 45:16Speaker 3: have been real. They knew that we had witnessed something
- 45:20Speaker 3: paranormal the sighting. The sighting changed us and all bonded
- 45:28Speaker 3: over the sharing that are experience. I cannot speak to
- 45:33Speaker 3: you over the tour group, I know it never forgot
- 45:36Speaker 3: those footsteps. Most are we host a wide variety of
- 45:44Speaker 3: people the tours Waynesburg. This includes those believed ghosts who
- 45:51Speaker 3: had chanced to encounter steam tunnel changed the mind of
- 45:55Speaker 3: the spectacle. Guess yes, sure ghosts were when we went
- 46:01Speaker 3: on tour steam Tunnel, guest groups heard the history of
- 46:06Speaker 3: hauntings at the site. As the tour groups walked through
- 46:10Speaker 3: the steam tunnel, great heard a horrible laugh echoing from below.
- 46:16Speaker 3: She stumbled ahead shakily and asked the rest of the
- 46:20Speaker 3: group toward the iveryone had heard that we will play
- 46:24Speaker 3: that we hadn't heard anything. The guests started to cry
- 46:28Speaker 3: until tremline told us to laughter. And twenty fourteen, The
- 46:34Speaker 3: Ghosts of Winsburg, a guest reportedly a creepy brush with
- 46:40Speaker 3: the paranormal taking our tour group on path of Death,
- 46:45Speaker 3: a dark honored pathway. A guests walked through the with
- 46:49Speaker 3: the group as assumed as she was the last person
- 46:53Speaker 3: out of the night. During the rest of the group,
- 46:56Speaker 3: she saw our friends ahead of her. In fused, she
- 46:59Speaker 3: looked back your path, I guess where him belonged to
- 47:03Speaker 3: One of her friends were behind her, but no one
- 47:06Speaker 3: was there. She screamed and ran up to her friends
- 47:11Speaker 3: inside the town hall group about the hand and there's
- 47:16Speaker 3: plenty of a lot of experiences about the photographs of
- 47:22Speaker 3: Williamsburg and the historic Captain Captain Timothy Hill's House. The
- 47:44Speaker 3: historic home was known that Captain Timothy Hill House can
- 47:48Speaker 3: be found on Tinanoke Island. Historic site dates back to
- 47:54Speaker 3: eighteen hundreds and that's considered to be the oldest remaining
- 47:58Speaker 3: building on the island. The house was moved nineteen eighty
- 48:04Speaker 3: after threat demolition, yet to still offers a window at
- 48:11Speaker 3: different time. What may occur appear the lonely home inside
- 48:18Speaker 3: outside seems to have a tangle hunted quality as soon
- 48:23Speaker 3: as one steps inside. When the house stood here near
- 48:29Speaker 3: the water, the children who loved the plane inside would
- 48:32Speaker 3: each sea of the ships passed by and would car
- 48:36Speaker 3: their image into the wood. Remnants of the early graffiti
- 48:40Speaker 3: can still be visible today on the family whose history
- 48:45Speaker 3: left an equal mark on the house that Captain Timothy
- 48:49Speaker 3: Hill himself. Captain Hill had many children, yet favored her
- 48:55Speaker 3: his daughter Jenny the most. He was a ban a
- 49:00Speaker 3: dominant about his daughter marying someone well educated and wealthy,
- 49:06Speaker 3: and therefore refused to allow the marriage between Jenny and
- 49:11Speaker 3: one of her childhood friends, Tom Freeman. The news such
- 49:16Speaker 3: rejection absolutely devastated Tom, who snapped and killed Jenny in
- 49:25Speaker 3: an ambush before killing himself. Knowing the tragedy history of
- 49:31Speaker 3: the family who once lived there, it comes to no
- 49:34Speaker 3: surprise that the house was quite harmed. Many believe that
- 49:38Speaker 3: the ghosts of Jenny still haunts billing today, seeking remains
- 49:43Speaker 3: for the wrong was done to her. It's hard to
- 49:47Speaker 3: deny the baffling nature of the story. Tom had truly
- 49:51Speaker 3: loved Jenny, why would he have sought to farmer in
- 49:56Speaker 3: any way? Perhaps will never understand. The building still remains
- 50:01Speaker 3: today for those curious step inside, and that's pretty cool.
- 50:13Speaker 3: I mean, there's a there's one. It's Barkley General Store,
- 50:22Speaker 3: as one of the earliest general stores in the area.
- 50:27Speaker 3: Originally opened in nineteen hundred's, Barkley General Store brought locals
- 50:31Speaker 3: and all sorts of goods and hostile items, even carrying
- 50:36Speaker 3: coffins and more. Unfortunately, occasions attention to bracy residents book
- 50:45Speaker 3: the stock up to those home supplies. The general store
- 50:50Speaker 3: was frequently pursued by travelers passing through town as stores
- 50:55Speaker 3: located near the train depot. While no one Pacific tragedies
- 51:01Speaker 3: were credit for the hauntings, current townsfolks say the restless
- 51:06Speaker 3: traveling spirits can be seen walking briskly into the general Store,
- 51:12Speaker 3: and owner and property claims to have captured many strange sightings.
- 51:17Speaker 3: On security Campras you got the Colonel Williamsburg. As early
- 51:27Speaker 3: American settlement. Numerous historic houses the Colonial Williamsburg is believed
- 51:32Speaker 3: be haunted by past residents. One such property the Peyton
- 51:37Speaker 3: Randolph House house Peachey family, who rented the property of
- 51:43Speaker 3: many guests during the residency, including young unnamed unnamed soldier
- 51:49Speaker 3: attending nearby college Willom and Mary. Unfortunately, young men fall
- 51:54Speaker 3: during his stay. In ever recover, he died in the home,
- 51:59Speaker 3: and today there have been multiple accounts that the visitor
- 52:03Speaker 3: spining young man walking sidely through the house or hearing
- 52:08Speaker 3: heavy footsteps of their heads even though no one upstairs.
- 52:14Speaker 3: I take a complete tour of the Colonel Williamsburg. Previous
- 52:19Speaker 3: locations on the tour constructed grounds on which the Ferry
- 52:28Speaker 3: Plank Plantation House were insides. Back in sixteen forty two,
- 52:34Speaker 3: in the second Ferry Service, Hampton Roads began carrying passengers
- 52:38Speaker 3: across the Leading Heaven River to the plantations at County
- 52:47Speaker 3: Courthouse along the old waterways. After Fairiy closed, several buildings
- 52:53Speaker 3: were erected in succession, only torn down or stride eventually
- 53:00Speaker 3: at the last buildings to fall. It's the fear all
- 53:04Speaker 3: about forgotten a living by the living, but previous residents
- 53:09Speaker 3: said there never truly left the grounds. Eleven spirits have
- 53:14Speaker 3: been reported haunting this house, including victims of a shipwreck
- 53:20Speaker 3: that occurred in eighteen ten. After CEE completed extensive renovations
- 53:26Speaker 3: in the house, was added to the Virginia Landmark Trister
- 53:30Speaker 3: now services a museum allow people to visit the grounds.
- 53:42Speaker 3: But yeah, that's that's pretty much it. I mean, it's
- 53:47Speaker 3: Virginia is pretty good. And if you guys want to
- 53:52Speaker 3: check that out and leave me a note and how
- 53:57Speaker 3: everything is, I appreciate it. And that's our story for today.
- 54:05Speaker 3: Hope you enjoy it and until next time, stay spooky,
- 54:10Speaker 3: my friends. Thanks until then, adios my friends.
