- 0:43So ring that bell and open the door.
- 0:48It's onefjef, episode 24.
- 0:53This is episode 24 of onefjef.
- 0:55The number 24 has always carried a sense of completeness.
- 1:00Time itself revolves around it.
- 1:0224 hours in a day.
- 1:03A system that began with the Egyptians dividing daylight and darkness into two sets of 12.
- 1:09In numerology, its digits add to six.
- 1:12A number ruled by Venus and tied to love, harmony and domestic balance.
- 1:16That makes 24 the caretaker number.
- 1:19Dependable, protective and devoted to maintaining connection and stability.
- 1:26cousins and I were really close when we were growing up.
- 1:29We all lived in the Cleveland area and we were all pretty close in age.
- 1:34So we'd celebrate all our birthdays and holidays together.
- 1:37We'd go on vacations together.
- 1:38We'd have these amazing sleepovers at our grandmother's house.
- 1:43It was pretty magical, to be honest.
- 1:46And I remember growing up and finding out that most people didn't have such a close relationship with their cousins.
- 1:53And I realized that it was special.
- 1:55this connection we'd forged as kids.
- 2:00Now we're all in our 40s and 50s, and we've dispersed to different parts of the country.
- 2:06And some of us have husbands and wives and kids and jobs, and it's not as easy to see each other and stay in touch.
- 2:12But the connection I feel and the love I have for this group of people is still there.
- 2:17It'll always be there.
- 2:20When we were in our 20s and early 30s, my cousin started a contest, a betting pool, if you will.
- 2:27about who would be the first of us to reproduce.
- 2:31It was funny at the time, and it still is funny, frankly, because none of us seemed anywhere close to having kids, in spite of the fact that we were all in the relative age
- 2:40range of when people start to reproduce, and also because we were betting on this.
- 2:44I'm not sure our parents found it quite as funny as we did, but that was often the case.
- 2:50One Christmas, we took an empty vodka bottle.
- 2:54and filled it with water and then closed it back up and wrapped it up as a gift for my cousin Sarah, who was I think 18 at the time, maybe 17.
- 3:03And we gave it to her in front of everybody and she opened it up.
- 3:07We told her beforehand and she opened it up and she says, oh boy, I love vodka.
- 3:14And she just starts chugging it in front of everybody.
- 3:19And the look on our parents' faces.
- 3:23I mean it was...
- 3:25I'll never forget the look.
- 3:26I'll never forget it.
- 3:28Anyway, the first cousin baby was born in June of 2010 to my cousin Mike.
- 3:35My sister had hers in August of that year and then my cousin Brian had his first a year later in 2011.
- 3:41Our youngest cousin Rachel won the pool, which was about a thousand bucks, I think.
- 3:49Which brings me to my guest today...
- 3:52who is my cousin Brian's firstborn child, Mia, who is now 14 years old and a freshman in high school, which is wild.
- 4:04Mia was actually one of the first people that I booked for this podcast.
- 4:08I was at a minor league baseball game with her and her family, and I was telling her about this podcast I was planning to start.
- 4:15And she was like, can I come on?
- 4:17Can I come on?
- 4:17And I was like, of course.
- 4:19And so last Saturday,
- 4:21We made it happen.
- 4:23I really enjoy talking to young people.
- 4:26Maybe I'm just trying to maintain my relevance in this increasingly confusing world of ours, but I enjoy hearing their perspective about all the things.
- 4:37So this conversation with Mia is no exception, and I hope you'll enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed having it.
- 4:43Thank you for listening.
- 4:46Thank you for being here.
- 4:48Here is my first cousin.
- 4:50once removed.
- 4:53Mia.
- 4:56Do you remember when we first met?
- 4:58I not tell you.
- 5:00No, no do I ah I Think you were drooling a lot at that age you were a big drool Well, it's all right.
- 5:07You were very baby.
- 5:08You and Matt both drooled.
- 5:09I don't know which one was the bigger drool Yeah, well, we'll find out I'll ask your parents um So tell me about tell me about Mia
- 5:17Okay, sure.
- 5:18I'm 14.
- 5:19I'll be 15 next year.
- 5:21I like that's kind of a no-brainer.
- 5:24Yeah.
- 5:25Well, I'm in high school.
- 5:27I am a freshman.
- 5:29Let me see.
- 5:30Right now it's wrestling season, so that's like the sport I'm in.
- 5:35Yeah, I have a nice friend group.
- 5:37I have nice friends.
- 5:38I hang out with them when I'm not doing a sport or homework really.
- 5:42support to you playing.
- 5:43Well, right now I'm in wrestling season, so I'm wrestling.
- 5:46that's right.
- 5:47And in the fall I did golf.
- 5:49And these are all new sports to like I've never played them before.
- 5:52Right.
- 5:52But it's interesting, it's new.
- 5:54And it's mainly it's like the people that I do it for.
- 5:57Yeah.
- 5:58But it's also interesting to try something new and also meet new people.
- 6:02Sure, sure.
- 6:03Do you like wrestling?
- 6:04I yeah, we'll see if I do it next year but it's fun this year and I'm kind of stuck with it so I'm gonna try it.
- 6:11uh Wrestling, I never would have thought of wrestling.
- 6:14I never really wanted to wrestle when I was a kid.
- 6:16You know, me neither, but then my best friend's older sister comes up to me and she's asked me about it and she talked to me about it for a while and so did my friend.
- 6:26ah And then I convinced my other best friend to join.
- 6:30So me, my two best friends did it with one of their older siblings.
- 6:36Right, right.
- 6:37So there was a first person who wanted to do it.
- 6:40Yeah.
- 6:40And that person got everybody else wanting to do it as well.
- 6:44Do you feel like you're good at it?
- 6:52How many matches have you had?
- 6:54Three, and how have you done?
- 6:56All right.
- 6:58You're giving me a blank stare right there, Right, we'll avoid that one.
- 7:02And the golf thing hasn't started yet.
- 7:04That wasn't, how'd that go?
- 7:07Also not bad, but I was like learning, you know?
- 7:09But that was fun.
- 7:10I got to drive a Golf.
- 7:11Right and your dad likes to golf too, so that's fun.
- 7:13Yeah Right, right, right.
- 7:15Probably not a good idea He's not a big wrestler either too.
- 7:19So I don't think
- 7:20He said he did.
- 7:21Did he really?
- 7:22Yes.
- 7:22One I asked him one day he was like, yeah, I did.
- 7:25I was good.
- 7:26And I had no idea.
- 7:27I was very surprised.
- 7:29Huh, I had no idea either.
- 7:30I can't really picture your dad wrestling, but...
- 7:33Me neither.
- 7:35No.
- 7:37I guess you knew.
- 7:38Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:39So what's it like being a teenager in 2025?
- 7:43It's pretty cool, you know?
- 7:44It's also interesting because we have the internet and phones and that kind of thing.
- 7:49So it's interesting to see other people and you know, like the same.
- 7:55yeah.
- 7:55How do you feel about the social media?
- 7:57I enjoy it.
- 7:57I don't like post anything.
- 8:00Okay.
- 8:00But like I it's interesting to like see other stuff and like like TikTok and Instagram.
- 8:08TikTok.
- 8:09Yeah, that's the one that's super addictive.
- 8:11That's like, yeah.
- 8:13Yeah, that's the one that I can't have on my phone because it's too much.
- 8:17Although I did start a TikTok account for this podcast and I'm not sure what to do with it.
- 8:21I feel like I should do dancing or something, but that was some dance numbers.
- 8:25no, we'll find Matt.
- 8:28He likes the choreo- choreography.
- 8:30Right, and then they'd go to the podcast though, they'd see you and Matt dancing and maybe me as well.
- 8:35uh But then they'd go to the podcast and they'd be like, this is nothing like what I saw on TikTok.
- 8:41But it's just pulling them in, that's all you really want.
- 8:44So once you've got them.
- 8:45You got him hooked.
- 8:46I feel like the dancing, that's really neat.
- 8:48well we'll talk to Matt about that.
- 8:49See if he can do some choreography for us.
- 8:51I didn't realize your brother was also a choreographer.
- 8:55Is he really?
- 8:55I didn't know that.
- 8:57mean, according to himself.
- 8:59Of course, of course.
- 9:00But you're vouching for him here.
- 9:02I mean, I kind of have to.
- 9:05He's gonna listen to this and be like I am a good choreographer.
- 9:08I heard you Mia.
- 9:09Yeah Do you feel that social media is like ah I mean there's bad things about it, right?
- 9:16Right and how is that in high school?
- 9:18Like I can't imagine I didn't have we'd have phones of course when I was in high school or anything So I can't imagine this house how like social life works when you have all the
- 9:27social media all the time
- 9:29It is interesting and I think for me, I do so many other things that there's enough time where I'm not on social media.
- 9:38And like it's just regulated because of all the other activities I do and like the time I don't have to spend on social media.
- 9:45But it definitely does affect our generation, like my generation and like, you know, it's like, I know a lot of my friends don't have social media, which I fully understand because
- 9:56you have your parents.
- 9:59You know, like I can see both ways um and like I think that's kind of where I stand like I don't post anything because I'm like I don't want it to I Don't want myself right affected
- 10:10by like what other people think of me.
- 10:13Do you feel like, mean, have you experienced any or known anybody who's been affected negatively by like social media stuff?
- 10:22not that I can think of any of my friends That's good like any of my close friends because they just like again none of my friends.
- 10:28We just don't Right.
- 10:30I mean we'll watch but like we don't you
- 10:32Yeah.
- 10:33Yeah, you know that the people who invented these products like who invented Instagram and all these tick-tock They don't let their children use them It says a lot about how
- 10:43nefarious they are uh And what was it like you've been in high school what for about?
- 10:49three four months now
- 10:50Like, three, two?
- 10:52How has that been?
- 10:53It's a big change.
- 10:54It's nice.
- 10:55mean, I definitely miss things at my middle school that like, I really just like the people and also honestly the building was kind of nicer, like the building.
- 11:03The one thing I've noticed about high school is that like grades don't really separate.
- 11:08Like the whole school is kind of just together.
- 11:10Like I have some, I'm really close with some of the seniors, but I'm also close with some of the freshmen and you know, like other grades, they all kind of mixed together, which I
- 11:18think is interesting.
- 11:19And like, I also have classes with the juniors and seniors.
- 11:22that's interesting.
- 11:23They didn't have that.
- 11:23That was not the case when I was in high school.
- 11:25We were all with the same.
- 11:27What classes do you have with upperclassmen?
- 11:29Oh, right.
- 11:31Okay.
- 11:32and then outro two and Spanish.
- 11:35Okay, yeah, I guess choir and band I had with other yeah with older kids.
- 11:40Yeah
- 11:40But it's definitely, I like that more.
- 11:43And like in middle school, I mean, we still had that, but you never had classes with any of them.
- 11:47So it's hard to see them throughout the day.
- 11:49right, Is it different or the same as you expected?
- 11:52Like when you went in, did you have expectations about it?
- 11:55I didn't really know what to expect.
- 11:57I didn't have a preset thought of what heist could be.
- 12:02I I saw this stuff in movies, but I never really expected that to be the same.
- 12:07Right, right, right.
- 12:08ah So has it been better or worse?
- 12:11um I think better.
- 12:13I think one thing I guess one expectation I had was more classes like more homework sure But that's not really how it's been like honestly interesting.
- 12:21I haven't had much like I could be wrong.
- 12:25Maybe it's coming but like I just the teachers are like more chill honestly weird so
- 12:33Huh, I don't know if your parents are gonna wanna hear that, but.
- 12:35They really will.
- 12:36It's probably the.
- 12:37I mean they know I don't I don't do any homework at home.
- 12:39I just don't have any huh.
- 12:41I do it at school
- 12:42I mean there's mixed feelings about homework these days in the sense that like, know You're at school all day and then should you really be going home and then doing school
- 12:49again?
- 12:49I mean it seems a little bit I feel like there should be a little homework But to a degree that I had it when I was in high school.
- 12:55We had a lot of homework And I hated doing it
- 12:59I don't like you either.
- 13:00can only the only homework I can understand is if you didn't finish it in class and it's just something that's like Carries over.
- 13:08Yeah, or like a project right but like they're like, hey, I need you to do this outside of school Like I really don't understand that especially since I know People who have like
- 13:17jobs and sports and like have other things going on in their lives.
- 13:21They just don't have time.
- 13:23So yeah
- 13:23Yeah.
- 13:25Are you a good student?
- 13:26I mean, yeah.
- 13:30Yeah, if I got anything below an A, I think I'd cry.
- 13:33Oh really?
- 13:34Yeah.
- 13:34Oh you're that good of a student.
- 13:35That's great.
- 13:36That's good to know.
- 13:37It's good to know what's your favorite subject.
- 13:38Oh, that's true.
- 13:40Honestly, for me to change, it's like depending on the teacher.
- 13:43Okay, that makes sense.
- 13:45But honestly, right now, one of my favorite classes is probably Spanish 3.
- 13:50Oh, It's right before lunch, which...
- 13:52Boy, no.
- 13:53Yeah.
- 13:55Sorry, I wasn't expecting that.
- 13:59And like, just like I have friends in that class and the teacher's nice, so...
- 14:03And are you learning Spanish?
- 14:05Yeah, well yeah, I guess, I guess so.
- 14:07You're getting pretty good at it.
- 14:08I'm trying to learn Spanish and it's not going well.
- 14:10I have labels all over the house as you'll see of things that I've labeled.
- 14:12Not in this room.
- 14:15Behind you there's a poster that I got in uh Columbia.
- 14:17What does it say?
- 14:18ah I also...
- 14:22Yeah.
- 14:22I also lived the life.
- 14:23Good job.
- 14:24Good job.
- 14:25Good job.
- 14:25Hey, you got an A.
- 14:27Well, la de da.
- 14:30So what's something that you feel like adults don't understand about what it's like to be a teenager right now?
- 14:40Um, I think they just forget honestly, okay I could be wrong about this, but I feel like teenagers have heightened emotions and like, you know, generally that's just kind of how
- 14:50it is I mean, I think they kind of forget that and then it's like You know, I might care a lot about something but they don't really understand that right and it's like it'll seem
- 15:00like the smallest little thing and like it doesn't make sense to them But to me, I mean, this is my whole world.
- 15:05Like I don't know anything else besides what?
- 15:08Right, high school and so forth.
- 15:11So like that's what matters most to me right now and I think No offense to my parents.
- 15:16I'm not calling them old but like they haven't been in high school for a nice chunk of time
- 15:24A nice chunk of time.
- 15:25That's a great way of putting it.
- 15:27I haven't been in high school in a larger nice chunk of time than your parents, but not that much.
- 15:34No, I don't want to go back to high school.
- 15:36High school is interesting, Mia, because it's like the only time in your life that you will be around the same group of people, your class, for all the time.
- 15:46Like you're just kind of, and it's really interesting once you get out and looking back, cause you're like, oh,
- 15:51I didn't really appreciate that when I was in it.
- 15:53I mean, it's good and bad because you don't like everybody.
- 15:56How many people are in your class?
- 15:57200 something.
- 15:58200, 300.
- 15:59Probably something around there.
- 16:01ah But yeah, it's interesting.
- 16:04Some of the people, I enjoy.
- 16:06Some other people, not so much.
- 16:08you find your people, you pick and choose.
- 16:10eh But then you'll get to go to high school reunions in like 10 years after you graduate and 20 years and you'll see how these people have grown up and that's the interesting
- 16:17part.
- 16:17That will be interesting.
- 16:18I'm I will be there.
- 16:19I will like to see that
- 16:21You'll find a lot of like the jocks because I was not athletic in high school at all.
- 16:26I was a theater nerd and uh and all and show choir as well.
- 16:30uh and a lot of the jocks like the football jocks had become fat and bald, which gave me pleasure.
- 16:37And that most of them have been through a divorce as well, which also gave me pleasure.
- 16:42But that will be interesting to see what relationship lasts.
- 16:45really is interesting, yeah.
- 16:47Because there were a few that people who met in high school were still married.
- 16:50Not very many, but a few.
- 16:52And a surprising amount of people who hadn't left the town, like Westlake.
- 16:56No, most of them had not.
- 16:57They still lived in the area, I found surprising.
- 17:01Yeah, what do you think?
- 17:02Do you think you're going to leave Columbus at some point?
- 17:03What do you think?
- 17:04I know.
- 17:05I like Glendale.
- 17:06um But like I also do want to see the world because like For me, there's not a point in staying in one place the whole time.
- 17:13That just seems like a waste of my time Exactly, so I would definitely like to see other parts of the world, but I don't know where if I'll You know come back to her and live here
- 17:26or yeah, I'll move elsewhere.
- 17:28Yeah
- 17:29I I went and lived all over and then came back to Ohio.
- 17:32Right now I'm kind of just thinking about my test next week.
- 17:34I was in band.
- 17:38you have a test in band.
- 17:39I don't think we had those.
- 17:41You have to like play a piece basically.
- 17:43Yeah.
- 17:43And that's marching band.
- 17:46All right.
- 17:48Oh, all right.
- 17:49Then what do you play?
- 17:52all right.
- 17:52Why'd you choose the alto sax?
- 17:54Not really sure, it's kind of coming back to bite me now.
- 17:58No, it's because it's heavy.
- 18:00Like the case.
- 18:02It's a big yeah.
- 18:03Yeah.
- 18:03Yeah.
- 18:04Well hindsight.
- 18:04Yeah.
- 18:05Yeah
- 18:06Really kinda should've thought one.
- 18:07Should've thought that one.
- 18:09I mean, yeah, it's fun.
- 18:10All right.
- 18:10I never could play.
- 18:11I played a like a I could play cornet like it's a small trumpet and then I a valve trombone and marching band, which I really didn't care for.
- 18:20But I never learned how to play like the reeded instruments.
- 18:23Yeah, I could play all the other instruments pretty much pianos and all that kind of thing, but never any reeded things.
- 18:28Yeah, I never tried.
- 18:30So maybe I should try sometime.
- 18:31Now think about it, I chose this in fifth grade, I don't really remember why I chose it.
- 18:37I could not tell you, but it's, I mean, I like it.
- 18:41Like it's, I feel like playing a brass instrument, I wouldn't like that, like on your lips, like that sounds...
- 18:48I know, I wouldn't.
- 18:50doesn't sound too...
- 18:51Yeah, when I got braces, I couldn't really do it as well because that makes it very hard to go...
- 18:55I know I've been through a few rounds of races and I like in middle school I had this friend and she was another Alistair Saxon and we'd sit together You know, we both like
- 19:03we're going through races and we'd be like, sorry I just got my braces tight and I can't play today
- 19:09You gotta take up my slack.
- 19:11Yeah, I mean, probably could have, but you know.
- 19:14I've never been, and this is no offense, I've never been a fan of the sound of saxophones.
- 19:19That's fair.
- 19:19I think you just have to play specific piece.
- 19:22Like, I feel like saxophones, they can't play everything, but if you give them the right music, it can sound really pretty.
- 19:28Absolutely, there's definitely like, you know, you're John Coltrane and so forth, like, given the choice, I'd go with like brass.
- 19:35Like when I went to New Orleans and like the brass bands everywhere that really like gets me.
- 19:41Loud brass music, like marching, like the marching band, the Ohio State.
- 19:44I think saxons I just this could be me, you know, because I play play it but like I think they're kind of just like this left out instrument because they don't fit into a concert
- 19:53band like they're just they're never part of like a symphony orchestra or anything.
- 19:56Right.
- 19:57I mean they're a jazzy instrument.
- 19:58Yeah, you think of that when you think of jazz, but it's not like, you know, they'll be all brass bands, but you don't have a saxophone in all brass bands, right?
- 20:06You know It's a jazz
- 20:09they're trying to kind of fit it in somewhere in high school bands
- 20:12Yeah, so it's like I always do feel a little like a little left out because like we're with the woodwinds, but The woodwinds are they're an odd group like with the whole flute
- 20:23clarinet
- 20:24don't get me started on the oboe.
- 20:25I mean that's...
- 20:26Yeah, well actually I can't say much bad stuff about that life one of my best friends plays the elbow I do know
- 20:32Well, I mean, no offense to her, of course.
- 20:34I find that in general, your friend accepted.
- 20:37The oboe community is a strange one.
- 20:40I can see that.
- 20:43some would Windsor.
- 20:45I feel bad, but I feel like the stereotypes do fit a lot of the instrument.
- 20:49Well it's a strange word to oboe.
- 20:52Oboe.
- 20:53mean if you say, you know how when you say a word over and over again it loses its meaning and you're like, what are we even saying anymore?
- 20:58Oboe is one of those.
- 21:01Who thought of that?
- 21:01Like saxophone, that's a legit word, but oboe.
- 21:05I mean, generally with instruments, they're named after the person who made them.
- 21:08Bob.
- 21:10Yeah, that's probably was probably Robert.
- 21:12But yeah.
- 21:15There's Robbie.
- 21:16have to look that up after the show.
- 21:18um
- 21:19Oboes, I think they're always really good at their instrument.
- 21:21for sure.
- 21:22Never met a bad oboe.
- 21:23No, if you're gonna choose the oboe you're gonna commit to the oboe.
- 21:26You really have to want to play the oboe.
- 21:30Church is.
- 21:32And that can be beautiful depending on the piece as well.
- 21:36um I can imagine it'd be hard to listen to somebody practicing that if they're not very good though.
- 21:41A lot of squeaking.
- 21:42Yeah.
- 21:43Yeah.
- 21:43Yeah.
- 21:44Huh.
- 21:45Band.
- 21:45Yeah, I was in marching band for one year and I didn't care for it at all.
- 21:49Yeah, I was in the freshman year and I just didn't care for it so I switched to show choir.
- 21:53Singing and dancing was more my game.
- 21:55I mean it does take away a lot of Friday nights, which is right not great But I do like being there like it's a fun time and especially all the people are you know nice and
- 22:05funny, so Yeah, our football team sucks, so
- 22:11well, you know, but you're the highlight then.
- 22:13Yeah.
- 22:13No, we are.
- 22:14are.
- 22:14Yeah.
- 22:15It's the funny part, but.
- 22:17We had to do like a whole summer thing too.
- 22:19It was like weeks and weeks of practice in the summer.
- 22:21Ben camp.
- 22:21camp, yeah.
- 22:23What are your friends like?
- 22:24My friends?
- 22:25Yeah.
- 22:26Well, I do.
- 22:29They're all a little different.
- 22:30have some friends who are like really into theater, like that's their thing.
- 22:34And like I am too, but like I doubt one a little bit of.
- 22:38And I have two friends that I can think of.
- 22:40They're crazy good at sports.
- 22:41Like they are just, that's their thing.
- 22:42Like that's, mean, they do other stuff, but like they're really good at sports.
- 22:46And you know, my oboe friend, she's really good at the oboe.
- 22:49Like that's her main thing.
- 22:52But she's also one of my wrestling friends.
- 22:56So...
- 22:56Goal.
- 22:58We play a lot of the same sports.
- 23:00well that's fun.
- 23:01That's fun.
- 23:01um What do you think you're the best at?
- 23:04Um, that's hard question for me because I think personally I'm just kind of okayed everything I just do so many things that there's no I can't really be great at one thing
- 23:13because I just focus on too many things at once Which is probably that probably tells you something about me, but like ah
- 23:22I kind of the same way I relate to that.
- 23:24Yeah.
- 23:25So it's like, I don't think there's any one thing that I'm just great at, but I'm just, okay, a lot of things.
- 23:31And I think that's kind of what I've accepted.
- 23:33And that's just what I do.
- 23:35It's a good realization to have at your age uh and high school is a great place to like, know Try to do all the things because it's one of the like you won't have a chance to be
- 23:43in like a marching band when you're an adult or like, you know all these things and it's crazy because you don't think about that but then you get into older age and you're like,
- 23:50you know, found a choir here but like in general people don't go into choirs as you know, so Yeah, do all the things while you can
- 23:57That's kind of my mindset.
- 23:58good philosophy.
- 23:59Really, I've done everything.
- 24:02Yeah, I mean you're wrestling for crying out loud, which is never a thing I'd imagine you're doing so yeah and what do you do you have like a Plan do you want what do you want?
- 24:12Any ideas what you want to do after this high school scenario?
- 24:15Know I want to go to college like I that's definitely one thing I wanted to do I'm not quite sure oh what I'd want to major in There's like a lot of different things that I
- 24:25would you know, let's what I guess film that'd be Like not on the acting side, but like behind the scenes production.
- 24:34Yeah
- 24:35I can give you some background on how that life will be
- 24:37And then I thought about engineering a lot and specifically aerospace engineering.
- 24:41That's what sounds like.
- 24:44I think that's the front runner in my head right now.
- 24:46Like I'm that's my best subject is probably math and like the science sciences and stuff in school.
- 24:52So I think that would fit me well.
- 24:57I've also thought about like forensic science and stuff.
- 24:59Interesting like crime stuff.
- 25:01do you listen to crime podcast?
- 25:03uh It's weird women generally listen to those more than men like that's a very the audience for female listening to it and it's just and like who knows why that is it's
- 25:14interesting
- 25:15and more men commit the crime so...
- 25:17Right, right, right.
- 25:19What do you think is the appeal to you of listening to true crime?
- 25:22I always just find it fascinating like on how such terrible people can do such terrible things sure it's I don't know it's interesting to go into like the psychology part of it
- 25:31and like Understand why they would do that and like right?
- 25:35It's just it's crazy
- 25:36Right, I often wonder if some people are just like born bad.
- 25:40I know.
- 25:41Like, that's a question I've heard a lot of people ask.
- 25:45It's like, do people change or is it, you know, is it affected by other things or is it how they are?
- 25:51How much about how they were raised had this to do with us things like that but like it does seem like there's a certain number a small number of people who just are Bad and even
- 26:01seem to enjoy being bad.
- 26:03It's like that.
- 26:04They like it.
- 26:05Yeah
- 26:06Yeah, yeah, they find joy in that it's it's definitely interesting to see how people You know are and just like what they enjoy.
- 26:14I guess.
- 26:15Yeah certain things
- 26:16It's I watch these my latest little YouTube addiction is these They take these that you know the body cam footage from the police officers and now they're putting these videos
- 26:26You probably seen them, but they're all over the internet There's so many of them and it's like fascinating for some reason to me to watch these like police go to the crime the
- 26:34crime scene in person and see all the I don't know why but yeah, very strange
- 26:38I think my least favorite job would be a crime scene cleanup.
- 26:42yeah, that sounds terrible
- 26:43No, you're hosing down the blood and stuff.
- 26:45Yeah, no, no, no, no, no somebody though wants that job.
- 26:49It's like I want to clean up the blood
- 26:50That's what makes it interesting on how different people are and like how someone would like that job.
- 26:55That's a great job.
- 26:56I would worry about that person a little bit though.
- 26:59Like if I was a parent and you were like, I want to clean up the blood after the crimes.
- 27:03You'd be like, what have we done wrong?
- 27:05Yeah, it's like they don't even want to commit it they wanted
- 27:07No, they don't even want to research it.
- 27:08They don't know anything.
- 27:09They just want to clean up the mess which yeah, no um So where do you see yourself?
- 27:15Let's say 10 years down the road
- 27:1810 years away.
- 27:19That's a long time.
- 27:21years old just out of college.
- 27:22Right.
- 27:23Well, maybe not just out but I mean I was in college for six years, but we don't need to talk about that.
- 27:30I you know, I was I was a bit of a slacker in college and some of the classes that I couldn't decide what to major in because I thought to major in one thing would be to
- 27:39exclude like I'm a dabbler too.
- 27:41So I felt like if I major in political science say then I'm gonna be a political scientist most likely.
- 27:47Yeah.
- 27:47And what but then what if I want to do all these other things?
- 27:50Right?
- 27:50What if I want to do films?
- 27:51So I couldn't, I had trouble choosing a major and then, you know, it's a long story.
- 27:56And then I was having too much fun and so I just, six years, yeah.
- 27:58And I'm not a doctor.
- 28:00No.
- 28:00No.
- 28:00No.
- 28:0124 years let me or 10 years.
- 28:03Um, well, I'll probably be broke.
- 28:05I feel like that's It is a great stuff.
- 28:08Yeah, I'm just trying to accept that I can yeah, but like you know the job and like all that debt from college Yeah, I've heard
- 28:18Yeah, no, I still have student loan debt.
- 28:21Yeah, it's a real, don't get me started.
- 28:23Don't get me started.
- 28:25Yeah.
- 28:26Just don't go to like film school for grad school.
- 28:29And also don't go to the most expensive art school in the country as well.
- 28:32would just like to just.
- 28:34Yeah, don't do that.
- 28:35Yeah.
- 28:37No, no, I would not recommend that.
- 28:39I mean, they give scholarships, but yeah.
- 28:41I would really hope to get a scholarship.
- 28:43That's kind of, that's kind of why.
- 28:45That's not why I'm doing all that I'm doing in high school, but I think it helps having a lot of stuff in.
- 28:51Yeah, it like you'll have a very well-rounded uh college application essay.
- 28:56That's, I would like to be well rounded.
- 28:57That's my goal.
- 29:01That's what I think.
- 29:02Yeah, so I don't know exactly what I'd be doing, but I think probably something in science.
- 29:07Okay, okay, let's say 20 years.
- 29:11in one year, so I'll be thirty-
- 29:1334 years old it'll be it'll be it'll be 2045
- 29:20Don't say that!
- 29:21Don't say that!
- 29:22crazy to me ah I'll be 71.
- 29:26Oh, so we be married with kids
- 29:30Probably yeah, maybe I don't you don't know.
- 29:32I don't know.
- 29:33I definitely want to travel I do want a family like this.
- 29:36I enjoy kids
- 29:38Yeah, I do too.
- 29:41Yeah, not really young kids, but like, you know, I've always liked talking to younger people It's like my jam any boys.
- 29:47No, no interest in boys
- 29:49I not right now.
- 29:50No.
- 29:52I'm more focused on other things.
- 29:55I mean, yeah.
- 29:56Yeah, I mean, that started like middle school.
- 29:58It's it's getting more serious now, but.
- 30:02Yeah, I didn't have a girlfriend I think I could take a sophomore or something.
- 30:05Yeah.
- 30:06Yeah, and she didn't even go to my school She was from theater stuff.
- 30:08Okay.
- 30:09Yeah, you want to have kids though?
- 30:11Yeah.
- 30:11Yeah
- 30:13I think everyone's kind of goal is to be rich.
- 30:15So that'd be kind of cool, but.
- 30:17thing is that money doesn't it's true what they say.
- 30:19It doesn't it doesn't give you happiness It just gives you like at a certain point some comfort, but really like if you want to live your life, it's a balance for me really and
- 30:31I've always kind of leaned towards like experience and fun opposed as opposed to You know accumulating wealth because then you don't what are you gonna do something with the money?
- 30:41Like if you do get rich, what are you gonna do with that money?
- 30:43So you have all the money.
- 30:43What do you get all the money?
- 30:45all the money.
- 30:45Well, I'd want to travel.
- 30:47That's definitely one thing I'd want.
- 30:48are we gonna go?
- 30:49Where's the first place we're gonna go?
- 30:52Europe, any particular country?
- 30:54this came up at dinner last night and grandpa he just started talking about his like heritage and stuff right and I guess he's a half Finnish but I right no one ever told me
- 31:03that so I mean I guess I'd be go that'd be interesting go to Finland and like he has all the places like where his family was from and stuff so it'd be interesting to go there and
- 31:13like see that absolutely more Germany yeah you know also we're German yeah
- 31:20Yeah, good sausages there.
- 31:23Yeah, if like sausage, sauerkraut, probably not at your age sauerkraut's fine.
- 31:26Not quite here.
- 31:27You'll like it as you get older.
- 31:28in I heard they have good waffles.
- 31:30Yeah, I'm not sure if Like I've been I think I've been through Belgium and I don't think that I had a waffle but I don't know that They have better waffles than any other places,
- 31:40but I don't know maybe maybe they do Yeah, and there's only one way to find out by going well or asking the internet really yeah, but right You don't say The internet can be dodgy
- 31:54by Mia Bifus, that's a great one.
- 31:56It's that's a great one.
- 31:58What's yeah.
- 31:59Yeah
- 32:00um Is there something that you're excited about in the future?
- 32:03Um, well, one thing I'm doing is I'm doing history day.
- 32:06It's like this thing where, there's a theme every year and then you like, you can do it by yourself or like with a small group.
- 32:14Um, and you like pick a topic that fits the theme and you like make this whole big project about it.
- 32:19There's like multiple different entries, entry styles that you can do.
- 32:23You can do like an exhibit board, a documentary, a performance.
- 32:28Like there's more, think there's something there's like five.
- 32:31Right.
- 32:32Um,
- 32:33Anyways, but my friends and I were doing, we're gonna do it.
- 32:37I mean, it's required for humanities, but like, we're gonna enter in the competition and like.
- 32:43Well, the theme this year is revolution, reaction, reform.
- 32:48And so our plan, it could change.
- 32:51But I think we were gonna do like the Code Girls.
- 32:54were like this group of women during World War II who like were hired to be code breakers.
- 33:01It's really interesting that they like couldn't tell their families is very secret.
- 33:04They were like teenagers, like they were young adult women.
- 33:08um So we thought that would be really interesting.
- 33:12Something we're interested.
- 33:13Sure, sure, Like what would you make?
- 33:16Like a documentary or like a...
- 33:18do an exhibit board.
- 33:20exhibit So it's like a trifold.
- 33:22Yeah, it's a good one because I think it's a thing people don't a lot of people don't know about Yeah, yeah, and I think I'd heard something about something like that, but I didn't
- 33:28know that that was just a big thing back then
- 33:31Yeah, so we'll see how that goes.
- 33:35Well, I guess the men were in the war,
- 33:37Right, right, right that makes sense.
- 33:38Yeah.
- 33:39Yeah, you know women were the first side note but like women the first people who were the big film editors back in the day when you were actually cutting film were almost all women
- 33:48because they thought it was like knitting like sewing ah So some of the earliest like big editors were women, which I always thought was interesting, isn't it?
- 33:57Yeah.
- 33:58Yeah What's your favorite song right now
- 34:03favorite song?
- 34:04ah That's a good question.
- 34:07Can I really come back to that?
- 34:09I need to like think about that.
- 34:11Alright, you don't have to come up with favorite.
- 34:13You can just be like one of the big ones on your playlist.
- 34:16Something on rotate.
- 34:17Okay, well, this is gonna sound really really odd.
- 34:21Okay No, well, you know, we'll see um, but that one song from phantom of the opera is like really sick Uh the one
- 34:33Not the Phantom of the upper That's the main one.
- 34:36Yeah inside my mind
- 34:38It's like been stuck in my head for a while because it was like went viral.
- 34:41I was like, it's cool.
- 34:43You know viral like recently I'm don't know why huh, but it's really interesting and it's like been really stuck in my head
- 34:51That's crazy because that musical was huge when I was in high school like all the theater kids knew all of that.
- 34:56Yeah
- 34:57Yeah, it's kind of died down.
- 34:58It has.
- 34:59Is it still?
- 35:00I don't think so.
- 35:01I think it closed just last year and year before yeah, it's one of the longest running things I didn't see it on Broadway.
- 35:06I saw it in Toronto.
- 35:09Yeah, have you seen it?
- 35:11I mean, I've seen bits and pieces.
- 35:12right.
- 35:13Never I've never sat down and watched the full thing, but I've seen
- 35:16Yeah, it's a spectacle.
- 35:17Yeah, you know, it's been chandelier come all that kind of things.
- 35:19yeah, yeah How do you feel about your parents?
- 35:25What's your relationship like with your parents?
- 35:27I enjoy them.
- 35:27They are my favorite people.
- 35:32If you decide, you know, you don't want to talk about it, we don't have to talk about it.
- 35:35Mean I I think I have a good relationship with my parents.
- 35:38Yeah.
- 35:39Yeah, I value them.
- 35:41Yeah
- 35:42Yeah, yeah, it's hard being parents.
- 35:44I think I have no idea of course Yeah Yeah, and how are things with your brother?
- 35:51Oh, that thing.
- 35:56It's a tricky one.
- 35:57Yeah, it's not like a love hate relationship.
- 35:58I think that's how most siblings are.
- 36:02He's also at the age where it's like, I don't I feel bad because I'm always mad at him, but it's just like he's just like at an annoying age right now.
- 36:09He's just annoying.
- 36:10Yeah, he's just really wants attention and uh he's got such a big heart that one
- 36:16He's very sensitive and it's like that's not a bad thing, but it's just like it can
- 36:20Yeah.
- 36:21Yeah.
- 36:22Like I'm sensitive and like I think he's sensitive.
- 36:25So that's saying quite a bit.
- 36:26Yeah.
- 36:26It's like, it's nothing bad, he just, he just can be a lot sometimes.
- 36:30It's like, you know, I think he'll, it'll get better as he gets older, but he's just, he's young right now.
- 36:37He's a very interesting kid.
- 36:39And I'm very curious to see what he'll be like in like 10 or 15 years.
- 36:43I'm dying to know.
- 36:44um Like it's so, more than almost any of my friends or relatives' kids, he's the one I'm like, I wanna know what that kid's doing in 10 or
- 36:56True he's so complicated Yeah, yeah, but you were very emotional and sensitive when you were like five years ago I remember like you were like, uh, were like an open raw nerve,
- 37:05but you really kind of yeah It really has and i'm and it's really been fun to see actually because I remember when I first moved here Which was now six seven years ago.
- 37:15um What?
- 37:22did say that um, but not on purpose
- 37:25Does make me legit?
- 37:26Am I cool now?
- 37:27Yeah.
- 37:27Yeah.
- 37:29No cap, bro.
- 37:30Oh, that's the perfect word.
- 37:33Fire no cap.
- 37:34yeah.
- 37:35That's...
- 37:35I'm doing it right.
- 37:36Doing it right.
- 37:36You're...
- 37:38It's like if you didn't see me here, you'd be like, is there another teenager here?
- 37:41Anyway, yeah.
- 37:46ah
- 37:49So when I moved here, you were having a very difficult time at the time and you were very emotional.
- 37:55And I was worried about you.
- 37:56was, because whenever I'd see you, you'd be very either happy or sad, but usually not the happiest.
- 38:01No.
- 38:02But yeah, it's been great to see you kind of grow out of that phase.
- 38:05I think one thing that affected my generation at least a lot was covid like I mean you met me like
- 38:12Right before COVID.
- 38:13Yeah.
- 38:13Well, I met you when you were a toddler.
- 38:15yeah, I moved like 2018.
- 38:17Yeah, so like I was you know, definitely affected me a lot and just like not being by anybody I didn't know like what was like socially I I just didn't know I didn't learn
- 38:28because like that was kind of like third and fourth grade for me like a little bit of fifth too That was all like COVID.
- 38:36So like I didn't I saw nobody I saw my neighbors and that was it
- 38:40Right, and you saw your aunt and uncle.
- 38:43Yeah, and just like family.
- 38:44Like I would see family and then like my neighbors.
- 38:46Like there were like two neighbors that that was the only people I would see.
- 38:49Yeah.
- 38:50family.
- 38:51um So that was like, I, that took a while to grow out of.
- 38:56Yeah, yeah, yeah I can imagine I mean I can't imagine actually but um Did you learn a lot during those periods when you're No, no, no, no Did your parents lose their minds having
- 39:07you?
- 39:07Yeah I can't imagine having kids during that age and having to like do a job at home and then have to make sure your kids are doing school and like, you know, blah blah blah blah
- 39:16blah
- 39:16is we're also like trying to find a bigger like another house to So that was also
- 39:22right, guys were in that small house during covid which is insane.
- 39:25was, it was rough, it was rough.
- 39:27Or else now it's a lot better, but.
- 39:29For sure.
- 39:29Yeah, that was a rough time and you guys moved right around the time I moved in here.
- 39:32like 2021 wasn't it?
- 39:33Yeah, we've been in our house for probably three or four years, I think.
- 39:36yeah now you got all sorts of room.
- 39:38Yeah.
- 39:38Yeah.
- 39:39Yeah, but your dad said your room is an uh incredible mess
- 39:43He needs to shut up because I fixed it.
- 39:48I'll send you a picture.
- 39:49don't have to send me a picture.
- 39:50I had a messy bedroom when I was a kid and I said that to him I was like, you know, I had a messy bedroom when I was a kid and he's like no, no, no, you don't understand.
- 39:58You don't stand it's like
- 40:00bad.
- 40:00But I just don't...
- 40:02it doesn't bother me.
- 40:05I just don't care.
- 40:06I mean it's better when it's clean but like I just don't really care if it's messy.
- 40:09And it's better now I cleaned it.
- 40:11He said that it was even hard for them to find a place to sleep on the bed.
- 40:15Okay, that's stretchy.
- 40:16oh
- 40:16Okay, I assumed there was a little exaggeration going on there.
- 40:23I'm sure he does.
- 40:23Yeah, I mean, he's your daughter.
- 40:24My parents had very strong opinions about my filthy bedroom when I was a kid,
- 40:28But also just my dad, like he's just very structured and organized.
- 40:32like, if I could describe with one word, it'd be spotless.
- 40:35If you could describe your dad with one word, would be spotless.
- 40:39Interesting.
- 40:40Because he just, he's not a clean freak, but like, he likes structure and order.
- 40:45Uh-huh, that's interesting.
- 40:47I never thought about that with your dad.
- 40:49Like I obviously see a different side of your dad than you do.
- 40:52Yeah.
- 40:53What about your mom?
- 40:53What's the one word?
- 40:56Heart felt.
- 40:58Oh, that's nice.
- 40:59Yeah, because I think that's this again.
- 41:01This isn't a bad thing, but she also has a lot of emotions like my dad He tends to bottle things up So I've which I've noticed but my mom she is very she's more open about her
- 41:13emotions.
- 41:13Um, so that's
- 41:15Yeah, that's the thing that i'm trying to change about I think growing up in the midwest.
- 41:19It's a lot of people we don't do well with I mean at least in our family too like even the extended family.
- 41:25We don't do a lot of like talking about our feelings.
- 41:27No, no Yeah, and I don't love that about it but um, and i've tried to you know Change myself and that's all you can do really because people are either going to come to you and
- 41:38that's part of the reason i'm doing this podcast is because like I feel like not even not even talking about feelings just talking about
- 41:45You I've never sat down and talked to you like this.
- 41:47You know, it's learning new things about you.
- 41:50You have any questions for me?
- 41:52Well, what was it like starting the podcast?
- 41:54Like how is this?
- 41:55Oh, that's an interesting question.
- 41:58It's been good.
- 41:59It's you know, I started it in early June.
- 42:01In fact, I remember when I was about to start it.
- 42:03Remember we were at that baseball game.
- 42:05Oh, we were.
- 42:05And we were talking about when the thunderstorm came in and we had to run for you.
- 42:09And I told you, you could be on the podcast.
- 42:10And here we are.
- 42:13But yeah, I started early June.
- 42:14And so it's been five months now and it's been good, you know.
- 42:19It's been good for my brain to have a creative thing to work on because it's been a while.
- 42:24Since I had a creative project.
- 42:25So that's been really good and it's really like the best part is like getting to like have excuses to like get people like friends and family in here to have interesting
- 42:33conversations and get to know them because you don't often do that, right?
- 42:36It's not right.
- 42:38It's not often, right?
- 42:39I mean I'll sit down with my friends and have a good conversation But like I'm not gonna do that with like my brother
- 42:44But even then it's like when the conversation ends with your friends, you're just like, okay if the conversation starts to die out You're like, all right.
- 42:50I see you later.
- 42:51Yeah with this we got to keep it going.
- 42:52Yeah, you know what mean?
- 42:53Yeah, we got to keep talking.
- 42:55Yeah So but yeah, it's been good I just need to keep my dabbling brain from wanting to do something else or pull whatever it is Maybe I'll start playing music on this because you
- 43:04know, knows start doing a song and dance or the tick-tock videos your career play brother.
- 43:09Yeah What makes you
- 43:13Genuinely happy.
- 43:14What's the thing that makes you like joy genuinely happy, whatever
- 43:17This is gonna sound odd, when the setting is just right.
- 43:21when it's like falling into, it actually feels like fall.
- 43:24There's like, maybe like jazz in the background and like all the leaves are falling and it's like evening.
- 43:29when the vibe is right.
- 43:30Yes.
- 43:31Right.
- 43:31When's the last time you had that?
- 43:34Well, we were like on the bus to one of the football games it was an away football game our last away football game and that was like I feel like right now we're kind of just
- 43:44getting over but it was like peak fall, you know, and like I could like smell a fire There's like a like a cookout or like something going on There's like the kids behind me
- 43:53like talking on the bus and I was looking out the window and we're like passing all these like leaves It was like evening time like the Sun hadn't fully set
- 44:01And I just like knowing where we were going and it was just like, it was very fall.
- 44:04Like the perfect moment.
- 44:05Yeah.
- 44:06I love that.
- 44:07I love that It also like speaks to like being present in the moment as well, which is a good thing.
- 44:12Yeah.
- 44:12Yeah
- 44:13Another thing I like is when the food just tastes so good.
- 44:16Like, it could be the s-
- 44:17hate that.
- 44:18I hate when food tastes good.
- 44:19I'm kidding.
- 44:21I'm I'm kidding.
- 44:22It just seems like that's a pie.
- 44:24think that most people would say yes good tasting food
- 44:26That's what saying, it can be the simplest, but when it just hits right.
- 44:29When's the last time?
- 44:30When's the last thing you ate where you were like, my god, this is...
- 44:34was a few days ago that tasted really good.
- 44:36I think I had the same, some from the same batch because I think they were from Halloween.
- 44:40Yeah.
- 44:41Yeah.
- 44:42You're a Twizzler fan then.
- 44:43Yeah.
- 44:44Yeah.
- 44:44Yeah.
- 44:45What's your favorite candy?
- 44:46Do you have a favorite?
- 44:47I do like twizzers.
- 44:48Those are one of my favorites.
- 44:50One I get hate for a lot is peeps.
- 44:52I like peeps.
- 44:53I'm sorry.
- 44:53I mean, I like a peep maybe two peeps, but too many peeps
- 44:58I'm not just gonna like spam peeps, but I do enjoy them.
- 45:02It's funny the name of my last episode was peeps.
- 45:04Really?
- 45:04Yeah, but it was about no it was about people was called peeping because I was talking about how I hate the term leaf peeping.
- 45:09Oh, okay.
- 45:10Yeah, I don't like it.
- 45:11You know, it seemed leaf peeping leaf peeping.
- 45:14I don't like it.
- 45:15don't like it.
- 45:16No, I mean, I like looking at the leaves.
- 45:17Yeah, and I'll go out and take a walk and look at the leaves, but I'm not gonna call it leaf peeping.
- 45:22It is and it didn't it wasn't a thing when I was a kid.
- 45:25It's a newer thing.
- 45:26I've never heard this until right now.
- 45:28I've leaf peeping?
- 45:28No.
- 45:29that's great actually.
- 45:30Maybe it's going away.
- 45:32What does your generation have a term?
- 45:33Of course your generation doesn't have a term for leaf looking at.
- 45:37Leaf checking out leaves, brah, bro.
- 45:39No.
- 45:40No, no, it's pretty bad.
- 45:42Fire, no cap.
- 45:43uh Yeah.
- 45:46Is there any like specific things that you really dislike?
- 45:48I'll give you an example from my life that I was thinking about.
- 45:51I don't like sticky.
- 45:53I don't like when my hands are sticky.
- 45:55I don't like if there's a sticky spot on the floor and I walk over it all the time, like all day, it drives me nuts.
- 46:00And it's always been like that, like eating syrupy things and I get the sticky stuff.
- 46:05I don't like it.
- 46:05What do you got?
- 46:06I get that.
- 46:07Hmm.
- 46:08Oh, I hate loud chewing.
- 46:10And it's like really bad.
- 46:12oh
- 46:13condition though, there's a term for that even.
- 46:15I a friend who hates- I can't even meet in front of him because he drives me crazy.
- 46:18not good and like i've gotten better like not saying anything because like I know it bothers people like when i'm like commenting on their chewing um But no, it's bad and it's
- 46:28like I just I genuinely feel bad like for the people when i'm like, like can you chew quieter but Because i'm like i'm sorry like
- 46:36I have a condition, I can't chew any quieter.
- 46:39My jaw's broken.
- 46:42Some people do chew really loudly though.
- 46:45Yeah, and like sometimes it is like, okay, you actually need to shut your mouth.
- 46:48Right.
- 46:49But
- 46:49Yeah, chewing with your mouth open at this time period like were we still doing that?
- 46:53Yeah, we kind of stopped with that
- 46:54No, I feel bad because my mom and my brother are like the biggest victims to my...
- 46:59there's their loud shivers in your life.
- 47:01Well, okay, that's how I hear them.
- 47:02They probably aren't to other people, right?
- 47:05Like it's probably just me and I'm like
- 47:07Yeah, I've never noticed them chewing loudly, but there's a word for that.
- 47:11There's definitely a word for people who can't deal with the sound of mouth sounds.
- 47:16All mouth sounds like that's probably what I should add like yeah lip smacking
- 47:20Yeah, yeah, no, I don't nobody wants to hear that uh but your dad's not allowed to
- 47:26He also doesn't like loud chewing, so his is better.
- 47:30I've noticed people who don't like loud chewing tend to be really quiet.
- 47:38Yeah, Aunt Tara, she doesn't like it either, um but she's quiet.
- 47:43Right, right, Interesting, it's like a thing that runs through your family.
- 47:46It really does.
- 47:48Something with the bifis bloodline.
- 47:50Yeah, I never uh, ever thought that I don't think I have an issue with that I've never I mean certainly some people when it's really loud that's a lot but um What about like
- 47:59you're reading pretzels?
- 48:00Is that also problematic?
- 48:02It just depends on like, cause like if someone's just eating chips really loudly it's gonna bother me but it's not gonna like-
- 48:08I mean it's hard to eat chips quietly to be clear
- 48:11and like that won't bother me too much.
- 48:12It's really just like the bath sounds like I think go with it, you know, Like I hate when people like are sucking on a lollipop loudly
- 48:20Right, or popsicle.
- 48:21Yeah.
- 48:21um
- 48:23Yeah, but like it's more just like crunching.
- 48:26It's gonna annoy me but not like it's not gonna bother me.
- 48:29Right, right,
- 48:30Like if you're eating a steak and slapping your lips.
- 48:34Yeah, that's a good one.
- 48:35What are you worried about?
- 48:37What am I worried about?
- 48:39Like even on the small level or like really on a big level like about your future or whatever it is.
- 48:45Well, there's something I've noticed and it's like something that bothers me or not bothers but worries me.
- 48:51uh And it's like, it's kind of just like a self-conscious thing.
- 48:55But I worry about like saying the right thing, you know?
- 48:57Cause I feel like sometimes I am not the best picking up social cues or like understanding what is the right thing to say and what's not the right thing to say.
- 49:07And it's sometimes it's interesting cause like it all is the same in my head, but sometimes I'll say one thing and people will be like kind of quiet after I say it.
- 49:14then I'll say another thing, and then they think it's funny, they'll laugh and stuff.
- 49:18But it's it's the same in my head.
- 49:20So what I'm kind of trying to learn right now is like how to pick up on that, and like what is good to say and what's bad to say, you know?
- 49:28Yeah, I would say don't I mean certainly there's a definitely a very strong line in some way but also in a smaller way I wouldn't overthink it because uh
- 49:37But I also tend to overthink things.
- 49:39That's it.
- 49:40You gotta control that mind.
- 49:42Yeah.
- 49:43Yeah, your dad has that ruminating mind as well Yeah, but he doesn't talk about it, but he just thinks but his brains always go He's like Batman.
- 49:52How is your dad like Batman?
- 49:54Well have you not seen LEGO Batman?
- 49:57Oh, nevermind.
- 49:58But I mean explain still I'm dying to know what I mean, so he's not like Batman.
- 50:02He's like Lego Batman.
- 50:03Yes.
- 50:04wow I'll be surprised
- 50:07I don't care about other Batman a Lego Batman is very like monotone does not share his feelings not monotone but like Because my dad he'll have a good laugh but like it's like
- 50:17Bothering him on like a very deep level.
- 50:19He's not gonna tell anybody.
- 50:20Yeah, but like he'll tell you if Again, if my room's messy, he'll tell me if he doesn't like that but like he's not gonna tell me if something else is wrong like on an emotional
- 50:33level
- 50:33Yeah, I mean, that's a Midwestern thing.
- 50:35You my dad didn't really talk about his emotions, you know.
- 50:38So, yeah, interesting.
- 50:40Lego Batman.
- 50:41That was just my first thought.
- 50:43No, it's a good one.
- 50:45what other there's no other um like giant fears or anxieties about, you know, the future or whatever.
- 50:53It's like doing well, um and I hate I like been but like it's kind of a love-hate thing there because I Despise I hate playing my saxophone alone Like in front of people it's my
- 51:06worst.
- 51:07It's genuinely my worst fear.
- 51:08Um, but like You know taking a test in math.
- 51:13I don't care
- 51:14Why do think the saxophone thing is such a big fear?
- 51:17I don't know, because like I I'm fine.
- 51:21It's like moderate.
- 51:22Yeah.
- 51:24But like it's kind of public speaking as well.
- 51:27Like I've had a fear of public speaking, but it's only gotten better.
- 51:30Yeah.
- 51:31Like it used to be a lot worse.
- 51:32But like that thing, that's kind of.
- 51:34that's the biggest fear for everybody.
- 51:35I think it's public speaking.
- 51:36Yeah.
- 51:37And like it depends on what I'm doing.
- 51:38Like if it's something, if I'm talking about something that I know well, it's fine.
- 51:42But if it's like, I have to make something up on the spot, you know, but that fluctuates.
- 51:48playing my saxophone, it's like I can have the piece of music right in front of me, but it's just like, I'm scared of like criticism for it.
- 51:55And just like, I don't know.
- 51:57It is just my worst fear.
- 51:58And I remember my middle school band director, was sitting down, I was doing this test.
- 52:04And I was like, but he would make us play in front of the whole class.
- 52:08Like the whole class, was like 50 kids.
- 52:10And I broke down in tears playing.
- 52:13Like I was sobbing, I was crying, it was not good.
- 52:16I somehow finished the test, I'm not really sure.
- 52:19My friends were like comforting me, but like the whole class was comforting me, which was nice, also bad.
- 52:25Anyway, so he's like, stay after class, I need to talk to you.
- 52:28So I'm like, okay, this is just getting worse.
- 52:30And he comes up to me, he's like, hey, you know, I got nervous.
- 52:34When I was a kid, you know, playing too, it's like, don't worry, but I wouldn't get as worried as you.
- 52:40And then he kind of just sent me off to class.
- 52:41I was like.
- 52:42Great speech.
- 52:42What did you say?
- 52:43Thanks for
- 52:45okay.
- 52:47So I have a story about that I took piano lessons when I was a kid and then we had to have a recital and The recital was like, you know in front of about you know, I don't know 30
- 52:5840 people whatever it was and at this point I've been doing theater and stuff.
- 53:02So it wasn't like I wasn't comfortable on stage or whatever.
- 53:06Yeah, but like I Got up there and I was so nervous and I like completely had practiced so many it's furlies, you know And I had practiced it so many times
- 53:17And uh I just completely, once it got off the rails, it just went way off the rails.
- 53:22And like, I had a meltdown.
- 53:23Like I was like crying hysterically.
- 53:25I was crying and I was like, so yeah, I can relate to that.
- 53:29I will never forget that.
- 53:30And then my parents pulled me out of the piano lessons.
- 53:32Did you think of your favorite song?
- 53:34Oh, well I was kinda still thinking the family opera thing.
- 53:37the Phantom of the Opera, that was it?
- 53:39Phantom of the Opera.
- 53:41No, that's a good one.
- 53:42That's a good one.
- 53:42I forgot about that.
- 53:43But it's not my favorite song.
- 53:45mean, I don't think I have a favorite song of all time.
- 53:47me one of these songs that's like a favorite that I would not probably know about.
- 53:51Or maybe I would, I don't know.
- 53:53I'm trying to stay hip.
- 53:54Another one it's not my favorite song.
- 53:56It's like Taylor Swift's new album.
- 53:58I don't think it's your best one.
- 53:59I don't know
- 54:00She's kind of she's kind of just kind of drifting along doing the same kind of thing over and over
- 54:04I think, okay, this could be a hot take, but I think what she needs to do is she needs to act her age.
- 54:10And that sounds odd, but I feel like she's trying to act younger, like stay hip or whatever, but I feel like she would be more popular if she played music that was her age,
- 54:21that was like fit her.
- 54:22And what kind of music do you think fits her?
- 54:24Like she's about 30, 35 or something?
- 54:26oh And like she's like still in the pop genre, which I think is good, but she also doweled in country, you know I Think was good.
- 54:34But like, know Adele.
- 54:36Yeah, I feel like Adele.
- 54:37It's a perfect example of people playing music.
- 54:39That's their age.
- 54:41Does that make sense?
- 54:42It does.
- 54:42Yeah.
- 54:43Yeah.
- 54:44It's the topics, I think more than anything that she's singing about.
- 54:47And just like the way the the music is written and like, you know
- 54:50I mean, she's trying to have a wide appeal and all these kind of things.
- 54:53ah
- 54:54I think it would be better if she played.
- 54:56What's your favorite album of Taylor Swift?
- 54:58oh That is a good question.
- 54:59Yeah, I it changes I think I just like specific songs of hers rather than like the entire album
- 55:05agree.
- 55:06I'm a song person and not an album person.
- 55:08think there's two kinds of people in this world, which maybe your generation isn't as much.
- 55:11I think your generation is probably more much more song related because of way music is distributed.
- 55:16But like, yeah, I've always been more of like a highlight, you know, I'll watch baseball highlights, but I won't watch the whole game.
- 55:22I'll listen to one song, you know, uh, watch.
- 55:26Right.
- 55:27know you Yeah.
- 55:28Um, but favorite, but I would go with 1989.
- 55:32That's that's
- 55:33was my entry point to her that was when I was like, this is good stuff
- 55:37Yeah, um, I think her newer stuff has drifted a little bit.
- 55:40Yeah, so I don't think it's her best quite boring But I do like folklore and ever more they're like twin albums essentially those two albums I think those two are probably my
- 55:49favorite
- 55:49Huh, interesting.
- 55:50Yeah, I think I like folklore.
- 55:51think if that's the one with the song the one on it, which I think it is I think so there's another version of that whole album that she recorded during kovat in like a
- 56:00cabin.
- 56:01just Yeah, yeah, that's really good um That I really like that's like maybe my favorite thing because I think her music is a little overproduced sometimes and I feel like pairing
- 56:10the songs down because some of the songs are well written It's just like they're overproduced.
- 56:14And anyway, yeah, we don't need to go down that I don't think Taylor's quisp and talk about in podcasts enough.
- 56:18So I think
- 56:19Good we got it.
- 56:22Now then we talks about Taylor Swift nearly enough Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what she's doing when she's like 80 or something You know still singing shake it off or
- 56:30something at that point on the stage barely able to walk and yeah
- 56:33No, because like I'm gonna add on to what I said earlier with music that's more her age I think she did was doing really well with like a word folklore like that slower more like
- 56:41piano Yeah centered music.
- 56:43I think that would be really good now and especially since like I don't think we're gonna hear another breakup album soon like
- 56:49Well, who knows?
- 56:50don't know.
- 56:50It's gonna be hard to be dating a football player.
- 56:52We're right, but I mean, who knows how long?
- 56:56Well, we'll see.
- 56:56I hope for them the best.
- 56:59I don't know much about Travis Kelce.
- 57:02That's pretty much where I'm at, yeah.
- 57:04And he's from Ohio, like Cleveland.
- 57:06yeah.
- 57:07I think he's a fan of the Guardians, I'm pretty sure.
- 57:11He doesn't.
- 57:12Yeah, and they have a podcast.
- 57:13They do.
- 57:15Who doesn't?
- 57:15Everybody's got a podcast now.
- 57:17um We're coming for you though.
- 57:19We are Jeff is coming for you.
- 57:20this is gonna, yeah.
- 57:23We'll get Taylor Swift on here and that will make them get divorced.
- 57:26then maybe I marry Taylor Swift.
- 57:29Wouldn't that be a weird twist?
- 57:30Yeah.
- 57:30And then I bring Taylor Swift home for Christmas or something.
- 57:34Yeah, she's tall too.
- 57:36She's like my height.
- 57:38Sure, I mean, I would hope so.
- 57:39She's probably like mean about it.
- 57:41She's probably like, um I don't sing when I'm not getting paid.
- 57:45I'll
- 57:47Right.
- 57:47It's Christmas.
- 57:48Can't you just sing a few Christmas songs, Taylor?
- 57:50No.
- 57:50No, I will not.
- 57:51Who knows?
- 57:52eh Hopefully she would.
- 57:54Yeah, I never know what to think about slowries, because I never know which ones are like genuine.
- 57:58uh I think most of it is kind of uh like you can kind of guess but I feel like Yeah, it's yeah
- 58:06You know, I hate to be a celebrity.
- 58:09Because like, there's a lot of attention, but like I don't want people making false, like, assumptions about me.
- 58:16Right and that's gonna happen.
- 58:17I mean there's some celebrities out there who just don't really talk to the press or anything and just avoid it Which I'd probably what I would do frankly because some people
- 58:25really some people like, you know I think everybody's got like a Like something that they're trying to fill in their in their soul, you know Some people are trying to fill it
- 58:35with money.
- 58:35Some people think if they get famous, they'll be happy some people blah blah blah blah But ultimately, I don't think that any of these things will make you happy.
- 58:43You got to work on yourself.
- 58:44Yeah
- 58:44That's my little mindfulness lesson for today.
- 58:48C.
- 58:48should make this podcast about mindfulness.
- 58:51is quite a bit actually, if you've listened.
- 58:52There's a lot of, I kind of interspersed and I've interviewed like yoga teachers and stuff.
- 58:56far so good.
- 58:57Yeah.
- 58:57Do you ever meditate?
- 58:59I've mentioned probably once my
- 59:00That's more than I had done it by your age.
- 59:02So Yeah, but the overthinking brain Mia I recommend it, you know What just saying or yoga you can do yoga too.
- 59:12It's not good for me before have you?
- 59:14Good for you Well, I mean if you've done it then you know what it is and you can go back to it when you get older because I feel like maybe it's the thing that older people
- 59:22be more like early 20s things for me.
- 59:25uh
- 59:27Yeah.
- 59:27Well, it's more yoga than I had done at your age We didn't even really have I mean there was it In general
- 59:34Yeah, just like what?
- 59:35I don't know.
- 59:36sure.
- 59:37Well, in school, I was very much an outcast.
- 59:41Like middle school was terrible for me because I was very much like the nerd of the nerds.
- 59:47Yeah, because I was in theater and there'd be pictures of me in the paper as dressed as like Pinocchio, which was just not good for a social life.
- 59:53um I had great friends at the theater.
- 59:57You those are my those are my friends.
- 59:58Yeah.
- 59:59um
- 1:00:00But yeah, I was doing theater stuff and then high school started off bad.
- 1:00:03But then as I started to find my people and like mostly the theater crowd and the show choir crowd, I really started to kind of fall into myself.
- 1:00:11And by the end of high school, was like, I was the person that kind of everybody knew who I was because I'd been in all the plays and blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:00:20So nobody, yeah, so everybody was kind of, everybody was kind of nice to me and like me.
- 1:00:24I was voted most likely to be, what was it?
- 1:00:28I don't know it was rich and famous or if it was something else, but I was one of those and I was voted wittiest Like funniest because I was yeah um Yeah, and beyond that like I
- 1:00:39played some sports, but I never was very good sports.
- 1:00:42I played soccer um And mostly because I think I mean I did enjoy it I think but mostly it was my father's encouragement
- 1:00:50sport you'd be rock climbing.
- 1:00:52If I was a sport, I'd be rock climbing.
- 1:00:57Interesting.
- 1:00:57What would you be?
- 1:00:59I don't know.
- 1:01:00You tell me.
- 1:01:01I don't know what that even means though.
- 1:01:04Cause I have rock climbed.
- 1:01:05Yeah.
- 1:01:06Yeah.
- 1:01:08It's like bouldering.
- 1:01:10Do you know that that one thing in the Olympics last year where they just like try to go at the Wallace Festival?
- 1:01:16right, right, right.
- 1:01:16Yeah, wall climbing.
- 1:01:17Yeah.
- 1:01:17Yeah, with the harness and everything.
- 1:01:18Yeah.
- 1:01:18Yeah, I've tried that.
- 1:01:20Yeah, it's kind of fun, but it's kind of scary,
- 1:01:22I did that but then I got to the top and I looked down and that wasn't a good idea.
- 1:01:26Yeah.
- 1:01:26It's so high.
- 1:01:27Yeah, it is.
- 1:01:28If I was a sport, I'd be rock climbing.
- 1:01:29Interesting.
- 1:01:31Yeah.
- 1:01:31I mean, I bike more.
- 1:01:32I'm a big biker.
- 1:01:32So that's kind of a sport.
- 1:01:34Yeah.
- 1:01:34Or is that like a leisure activity in your mind?
- 1:01:36Yeah, um, why they can pet like what level you're doing it at?
- 1:01:40Hmm, you know cuz like you were just going through a stroll Going for a stroll through the neighborhood.
- 1:01:46I don't know.
- 1:01:47That's just like a hobby But like if you're actually biking multiple miles and like yeah pushing yourself.
- 1:01:52Yeah, so I'm sporting I did 1,500 miles last year.
- 1:01:56Yeah, this sure not so many but last year Yeah, I've been falling off the rocker off the rocker.
- 1:02:01What does that mean?
- 1:02:01I don't know what that means.
- 1:02:03We're just gonna disregard that Okay, I can edit that out.
- 1:02:06Is there anything you wish people would ask you about that nobody ever asks you about?
- 1:02:11I don't know, but I feel like I know a lot of people, but there are certain things that people just don't know about me.
- 1:02:18It's not something you're like, hey, do you do this?
- 1:02:21That's not a question that you'd ask normal people.
- 1:02:23a lot of people don't know I'm a figure skater, or yeah, or a lot of people don't know that I am a huge baseball fan.
- 1:02:31But it's not a question you'd ask.
- 1:02:34how often do figure skates?
- 1:02:36I've kind of lost it recently, oh but like, yeah.
- 1:02:41I mean, it would be like world's first week.
- 1:02:43wow.
- 1:02:44Yeah, you know my sister did that was a big figure skater.
- 1:02:47should tell her that next time we'll see Mitch at the clan bay because she'll be interested in that
- 1:02:51did not know that about her like you just don't know if someone's a figure skater unless is there cuz like that's the thing figure skating is hard for me because You have to
- 1:02:59devote yourself to it generally like you have to You have to put in the work and do it or else you just kind of stall yours at this Yeah, that's where I was for a while and now I'm
- 1:03:10taking break from it I hopes you go back to it soon, but
- 1:03:12I feel like it's the kind of thing you can go back to whenever you want, in a way.
- 1:03:15Cause if you're not doing it constantly, you lose procs.
- 1:03:18Right and there's no figure skating team at your school now.
- 1:03:21No.
- 1:03:23Yeah.
- 1:03:24Yeah.
- 1:03:25And what about the um the baseball?
- 1:03:28How did that happen?
- 1:03:29I mean just like growing up, you know my dad always having it on I just
- 1:03:33When did you first start to really get into it?
- 1:03:35would you remember?
- 1:03:35Like a year or two ago, three years ago?
- 1:03:38Yeah.
- 1:03:39It's like, don't really enjoy watching any other sports, unless like the Olympics.
- 1:03:43I love the Olympics.
- 1:03:45But like, I don't really watch any other sports, just baseball.
- 1:03:48Yeah, baseball, I don't really watch much of it unless it's like an important game because it kind of is a very long boring game in my mind.
- 1:03:56Yeah.
- 1:03:57But your dad, of course, is the biggest baseball fan of anybody I think I ever know or will know.
- 1:04:04Yeah.
- 1:04:04He really likes the baseball.
- 1:04:06I definitely get that from him and we both enjoy it.
- 1:04:08um
- 1:04:10Well, he probably helps you understand it better so you can appreciate it more.
- 1:04:13But it's like I'm trying to get my friends into it.
- 1:04:15Like it's a tough one.
- 1:04:17But I, they definitely have latched on a little bit.
- 1:04:21Like my one friend, I got her to watch the world series.
- 1:04:23um Or she did it all on her own.
- 1:04:28mean her dad is also a baseball fan.
- 1:04:31And Guardians are your team, I would imagine.
- 1:04:33Yes.
- 1:04:35Yeah, I've never been a fan.
- 1:04:37Never been a fan of the Reds.
- 1:04:38But I know, I feel like a lot of people from the club are Reds fans.
- 1:04:42But it's big crowd.
- 1:04:43Yeah, I think mostly it's an Ohio State University thing.
- 1:04:48Really just love and I don't you know, I root for the team, you know, but it's not exciting because they win every game.
- 1:04:54So what what where's the excitement in that to me?
- 1:04:57I'm just because like like my mom's deep family history with Ohio State.
- 1:05:01Yeah
- 1:05:02Yeah, and my dad went here there and my sister went there.
- 1:05:07Yeah, so,
- 1:05:08My uncle has a national championship ring.
- 1:05:10Right, right, that's crazy.
- 1:05:12And your great, your grandfather, think, was the marching band guy?
- 1:05:16Yeah.
- 1:05:17Yeah.
- 1:05:19There's a lot of connections to it.
- 1:05:20Yeah, your mom said the family's real connected to that school.
- 1:05:22Yeah.
- 1:05:22Yeah.
- 1:05:22oh
- 1:05:23Mike grandpa he was on the one of the teams that won the national championship.
- 1:05:28wow for baseball.
- 1:05:29So wow I
- 1:05:31Wow.
- 1:05:32Wow.
- 1:05:33Yeah.
- 1:05:33I wonder, they playing?
- 1:05:34I think they're playing right now, aren't they?
- 1:05:36oh, yeah.
- 1:05:38I'm sure they're winning, I mean...
- 1:05:40There was a 97 % chance they won.
- 1:05:44Yeah, they win every game until towards the end then they start to lose a game or two.
- 1:05:47uh Yeah, yeah Yeah, and people really like I remember When they if they lose a big game the entire town feels like it's deflated.
- 1:06:00It's really strange
- 1:06:01Especially Living Beer Ohio State.
- 1:06:04It's like you see it a lot.
- 1:06:06The X's over the L's.
- 1:06:08man.
- 1:06:09Yeah, it's very, I didn't even know what that X over the thing was for my first two years here and I would see it everywhere and I'd be like, what's going on here?
- 1:06:15And then I'd be like, oh, then I saw it in the news and I was like, my goodness, people are really putting effort into this.
- 1:06:20Gonna cross up all the M's.
- 1:06:22It's like a grade into us.
- 1:06:23Like if you're born here or just like, you know, go to Ohio State.
- 1:06:26Right.
- 1:06:26It's a big thing.
- 1:06:27Yeah, it's unusual.
- 1:06:29Yeah.
- 1:06:30I like the band.
- 1:06:31always keep wanting to go see one of those skull sessions just because I love the loud, but I haven't done it.
- 1:06:37But I do enjoy the band.
- 1:06:38One of the best marching bands in the entire world.
- 1:06:40They're very good.
- 1:06:41I know a bunch of people who've been in the band.
- 1:06:44Yeah, it's very hard to get into that band.
- 1:06:45There's a documentary on YouTube about how to get in, how to get like about getting into the band.
- 1:06:51was really interesting.
- 1:06:52crazy, I know like four people who've been in the van.
- 1:06:54Right.
- 1:06:55It was also like rehearsals for the guy who like has to do the baton thing.
- 1:06:59Yeah, which was a big one because they have to do all sorts of crazy stuff with that baton.
- 1:07:03Yeah.
- 1:07:04Yeah.
- 1:07:04We had a good drum major for our high school.
- 1:07:07I mean, he would use like fire.
- 1:07:08Oh they would let them do that at the high school?
- 1:07:11That's crazy.
- 1:07:13Wow, that's pretty cool.
- 1:07:14They should do that all the time.
- 1:07:15I that's exciting.
- 1:07:16I know, it is cool.
- 1:07:17I would go see more sports if they had fire, you know?
- 1:07:21Flaming baseballs, I see all sorts of great ideas here.
- 1:07:24Yeah, I guess I never really thought about that.
- 1:07:26you could do all sorts of things.
- 1:07:28Yeah.
- 1:07:29All right, Mia.
- 1:07:29Well, do you have anything else to say to to my audience here?
- 1:07:35I think so.
- 1:07:35Before we wrap it up?
- 1:07:37No.
- 1:07:37I I'm good, I just think I should say that I should come back again.
- 1:07:41Okay, yes, you can come back again for sure.
- 1:07:43I might try to get your brother on too.
- 1:07:46I think that would be interesting.
- 1:07:47I think it'd be interesting, He'd be asking all the questions.
- 1:07:51I would I'd be very interested to yeah, I like coffee.
- 1:07:54I just like sit no
- 1:07:56No, that's that's why that's why I want to do it cuz I can't know you can't you can hear it afterwards You can't sit in the room.

- 1:09:49I said, what about my eyes?

- 1:09:54I said, what about my passion?
- 1:09:56He said, keep it burning.
- 1:09:58I said, what about my heart?
- 1:09:59He said, tell me what you hold inside it.
- 1:10:03I said, pain and sorrow.
- 1:10:06He said, stay with it.
