- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Welcome to everyone the critic.
- 0:02SPEAKER_01: This show where a guest picks a movie rated below 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Yanis Co, a formerly pretentious film school student who ten years later sees the error of his ways.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: My guest today is an improviser, an actor, an author, and a podcaster.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: Well hides.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: Thanks for having me.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: I'm excited to be here.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: Thanks for being here.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: Uh how are you doing today?
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: I'm having an alright day.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: Um an alright day.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: It's nice weather.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: Um I've had some good coffee.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: It's 1 p.m.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: where I am, so I'm about at the midpoint, and I feel pretty good.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah?
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: You're having good weather.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: So, like here we've had like ridiculously hot weather for the last week and a half, and today it finally rained, and we're also happy.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Right, right, yeah.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've heard you guys are having a heat wave, yeah.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: It's been too much.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: It's been like nearly like it's been 36 to 37 degrees, which is like, I don't know, like near on a hundred degrees there, I think.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Uh I live in Los Angeles, so even when it gets very, very hot here, which it does, there's like no humidity, it's very dry heat.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's like really never bad.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: I think last time, like I I didn't bring this up before, but like you you've been here like a bunch of times as well.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: And you came I I you you did to actually teach me a workshop once, uh, but you came in like October time.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: And uh I guess like that's that's the ideal weather for me.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: I like that kind of weather.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: I've had good luck when I visited London.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: It's been like nice weather.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: I mean I've had rainy days here, but nothing like too bad.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: And there's always some blue sky mixed in.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: So I've had I haven't I've had an unfairly good representation of London weather, I think.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: How long since you've been here?
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: It's been a while.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: I think 2018, I think I was there last.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: I'd like to go up to literally like as soon as travelling can happen again, I'm itching to get back.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you've got to come back, gotta do some more.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna do like a little UK tour.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: I want to see Dublin again, and I'd like to go up to Edinburgh, and I want to spend some time in London too.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: That'd be great.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Just definitely have to uh keep an eye out for that as well when you do.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Um I'll make noise about it on social media.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Whether people want me to or not.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: I'm sure people want you to.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: The last ones you did here were like sellouts, so.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's lovely.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: I hope that happens again.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: That'd be great.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: Um so the movie you picked today was uh you decided to go for Flashdance, which I thought was a very surprising choice.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: I was not expecting you to suggest that movie.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Um Well how why were you surprised?
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: I mean I could I could guess why, but like what it's just not a movie I think I think of anyone picking, to be honest.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: What's your what's your impression of it?
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: You've never watched it, right?
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: I'd never seen it until yesterday.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Okay, so before you watched it, what was your general did you have any impression of it at all?
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'd seen I'd seen the famous dance scene at the end.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Like I'd seen that and I'd uh I knew that she was a welder and that was about it.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: That's pretty good.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: I think that's actually pretty deep knowledge.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: But it's and then I also knew the music from it, because the music's so synonymous with it as well that you it's impossible to avoid it.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: Yes, whether you want to or not, right.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: It's a super eighties, it's like one of the most 80s soundtracks you can have.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: But it's a great soundtrack, to be honest.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: I think it's pretty great.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: I love the music.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: I still I do, I love it.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Um so what is your actual history with it then?
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: Okay, so the the reason I picked it is it's like a sentence so it came out in 1983, and I was 13 that year.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: So I think I I like this movie, and it's like just because of when I saw it.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: I I think I saw it when I was 14 or something.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: It was on cable, and it was like a bit of a naughty movie for me to watch.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: Like they talk about sex a lot.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: There's like sex jokes, and um I mean that and I was gonna say, like, it's pretty much a male fantasy movie of like hot welder who like does basically classy, well art directed strip teases for the good, almost strip club in town, as opposed to naughty, morally forbidden strip teases at the bad strip club in town.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: And but I didn't like perceiv uh I didn't perceive it that way when I was like fourteen.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: It was just like the the very mention of sex or any kind of sort of like quote unquote safe presentation of like nudity was like was like super exciting for me when I was fourteen.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: It was like, ooh, girls dancing and like sexy time.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm not I'm not I'm not really supposed to be watching this.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: So it was kind of like a thr I think I saw it like on cable or something.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: It was like a thrill.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Um it's very funny because it's so tame now.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: It's very but you can tell it's trying to be bad, you know what I mean?
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: It's like it's like trying to be like naughty, but really it's like a very lame dad's version of like of like sex stuff.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: Like there's nothing really truly intense going on.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Even when you go into the strip club, which you do at one point, it's like a very like like sort of weirdly almost rated PG sex club.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's so everybody's like well behaved and safe and and just like there's no real violence or seediness going on.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: It's like it's like what a suburban dad wants to believe the strip club world is like.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: Like everybody's kind of friendly and uh you know, guys are they're a little mischievous, but they're not such bad guys, and uh these girls they're happy to be here doing this, and uh they're making some good money or whatever.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: Like it's but um yes, it's very tame by modern standards.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: But uh and I also loved the music when I was a kid.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: I I had the soundtrack and I played it a million times.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: Um and I still I still do like all those songs.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: I mean they're incredibly cheesy, like the keyboards are in amazingly early eighties.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: Like you Yeah, you you can almost you if you listen to the music, you could almost guess what month it came out.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Not not just the not just that it came out in 1880, but that it came out in April of 1983.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: It's like really particular to that time.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: But um so I I picked it because I just have a sentimental attachment to it.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: Oh, and it was like a massive hit.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Like it was huge.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: It was a huge like everybody was doing was talking about the movie or playing the music or doing like jokes or dressing up like Jennifer Beals, the the main actress, the main character in the movie.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: The poster of it where she's kind of got her like sexy off-the-shoulder grey sweatshirt was like an iconic image that everybody would make fun of um or pay homage to or something.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: So uh the the title song, What a Feeling, was on the radio every 10 seconds for like the next five years.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: And so um, yeah, I just had like a warm feeling about it.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: When I heard that it had like such a low percentage rating, I was actually surprised.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: I was like I was shook as well.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: This is a big hit.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Like I everybody everybody watched this movie.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: So if it has 40% on rotten tomatoes, I'm like, well, then really surprised.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: But no, it has it has 34.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: Oh, good heavens.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: Well, then I watched it last night, and I had not seen it since I was a teenager.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: You know, I saw it like what when it came out, and I had not really seen it since, and I watched it last night and I was like, oh yeah, this is a bad movie.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: This is a bad movie.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: I I did not realize that when I was 14.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: It's like really stupid.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Like it's an incredibly dumb movie, everybody's an idiot.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: Um there's there's it's not reality in any way at all.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: It's just a series of music videos.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: So I can say if I was a movie critic in '83, I'd be like, I cannot give this movie a good review.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: It's too stupid.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: I've I'm I'm still kind of surprised it's that low.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: I I I agree too, because the things it does well, it does like very well.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: Like the music is great, the dance numbers in the movie are totally unrealistic, but they are like really fun and cool.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Like they are like good music videos, as it were.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're fun.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: The dances are good, like um and the director, Adrian Lynn.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I I can defend this movie.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: So I do understand why it has a low percentage, but I am also able to defend it.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: If that's yeah, that's what I've been brought here to do.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: I can do it.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: So again, you've said you said you saw only saw it when you were a teenager and then like yesterday was the first time that you've seen it again since.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: That's interesting.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Like uh it just to like to have that nostalgic feeling for it still and like too.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: It was way more tame that I remembered.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh man, here we go for the sexiest movie I ever saw.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's sort of like dad sexy, like it's it's lame sexy, and it's very guy.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: I didn't realize how guy it was.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Like when when we're first meeting, the the main character is this girl, Alex, and she's a hot welder who dances sexy dances in a bar, but wishes she were like a high-class ballet dancer.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: That's like the story of the movie.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: We first meet her and her dog, she sees her dog and she's like, Hey, did you get laid today?
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: That's like her joke she says to the dog.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, what a guy joke to make to a dog.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: I I don't think that's a joke that a woman would come up with.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: Hey, did you know that?
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: That's like a 50-year-old guy's joke.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: So when I was watching it last night, I was like, oh right.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: I think I thought that was really funny when I was like 14.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: And now it's like guy to Yeah, well, it worked like a charm.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: I love this movie.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Um you must have been like the perfect age.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: I I really do think so.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: It like burned into my DNA and into the chemicals of my bones to the degree where I loved it so much, and everybody my age loved it.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: Like it wasn't just every and really adults loved it.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Like it was a hit.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: Um, it just So what's the reason you didn't see it until it came on cable?
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: Because I was too young, right?
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: It was a rated R movie, and you couldn't see rated R movies unless you were with an adult.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: And my parents were like not strict, strict, but I was like a very I followed the rules, and so I I wouldn't go see a movie I wasn't supposed to see.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: But that makes sense.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Weirdly on cable we were allowed to watch rated R movies.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: I just wouldn't go to the theater.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: So when the when the rated R movies came on HBO or Showtime, I watched them.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: So it's just your parents like, I'm not gonna go see this with you.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: Yes, exactly.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: They're like, I'm not taking you to see Flashdance.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: But then when it was on Showtime, I was like, ooh, Flashdance, let's see what this is about.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: I think I watched it with my dad.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: And I think he thought it was funny, like he laughed at all the lame dad dad jokes.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: Not they're dad, they're not dad-dad jokes, classic dad jokes, but like Except for like the stand-up comedian that's in it.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, right.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: I loved him.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: He's so dumb.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: I hated it.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: I hated him in it.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: He's oh well he all he tells Polak jokes, and like lesbian jokes, yeah.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: And like and then lame puns, basically.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: That's like his repertoire.
- 11:21unknown: Yeah.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: That was But he doesn't get a laugh until until like he starts telling the like racist Polish jokes, and then like that's the only time he gets laughs.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: He breaks through with talking about the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that meant nothing to me.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: I have like no context for that.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: Well the movie takes place in Pittsburgh, so like he well, yeah, we should we gotta f we have to pause and talk about the stand-up properly.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: He's such an insane character.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: We'll come back to him, I guess.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: Like we'll we'll we'll we'll go through the movie itself and then we'll come we'll come up gloss like get back to him.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, like you said, it's it's about a an 18-year-old welder.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Yes, a female welder who who wants to become a ballet dancer or like wants to audition to become uh to at this like um for a ballet school.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: That's right, essentially.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: Um but she's like really scared to do it and everything.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Um and then she like starts, she meets this uh she's like works at this steel mill.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Sort of strip uh oh yeah, steel mills.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: At night she works at a um Yeah.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: It's a like it's supposed to be like a blue-collar guy's bar.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Everyone who goes there is like regular Joe.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: And the girls dance in alluring manners, but they're they're clothed.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: It's not a strip club, but it kind of but it feels sort of like one, like they kind of dance, it's all men in the audience kind of gawking at them.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's only men in the audience, and they're like kind of they're kind of luring, but it's it's this weird thing that exists in guy movies where, yeah, they're staring at young girls, but these are all right guys.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: These are not bad guys.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Hey, they just bad guys are the ones at the strip club.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: The bad guys are at the real strip club.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: These are like these are good Joes.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: You know, they're working their job, they want to see a pretty lady do a little dance.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Let's not be hard on these guys.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: That's that's the vibe.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: It's supposed to be a friendly, nice bar.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is the good guy bar.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: But the dances they do are not only sexually alluring, they're this super well art directed costume lighting.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: It's like a Broadway level theater is at this like working class guys bar.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: That's the and this is like the maybe the third sequence in the movie.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: And when I was watching it last night, I was like, oh yeah, this is insane.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: This is insane to think that this dance is going on in a regular bar.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: Like with strobe lights and depth perception.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: The strobe light one is crazy.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love it.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: I do not know what's going on with that one.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: I loved it.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: I loved it.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: It's a great sequence, but it's like imagine watching that in a bar.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: I I can't even imagine, and especially it's supposed to be like a dive bar where you get like a can of can of Miller and you sit down.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, the first dance we see is sort of one of the iconic dances of the movie where she like is doing like pretty intense, abstract dance, and then like sits in a chair, archers her back, pulls a string, and a bucket of water splashes on her.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: So then she does the rest of the dance soaking wet.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Which is that's what I thought was the ending.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: And so when I saw it at the start, I was very surprised.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Yes, this is like the famous dance of the film.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: She like splashes herself with a bucket of water and then dances kind of wet, so it's like, you know, sexy girl in a soaking wet outfit.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: Um, but the dancing is also really good.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: There was like a bunch of body doubles who were professional dancers who did all the dance numbers.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: And yeah, the bucket of water splashing on her has become one of those movie moments that gets like referred to like Deadpool, like does a parody of the dance where he pulls a lever and a bunch of empty bullet casings like fall on him.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: And Charlie there was like a Charlie Brown and Snoopy special where it was like called Flash Beagle, where like Snoopy does this dance.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it's like that's like a really iconic moment.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's very iconic.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Everyone knows that scene.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Uh but I just I thought it was the ending.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: I was like very surprised it came right at the beginning.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like that it was very early in the film.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: Um and and it kind of sets up the tone of the movie, which is like we're not worried about being realistic, we're just gonna show you cool music video sequences, and it's it's a good one.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Like it is a really good dance and like a cool sequence.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: There is no way that a that a bar that serves like two dollar pints of beer is featuring this kind of entertainment.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: Have you seen um the movie burlesque?
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: Yes, I have seen that.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Because it was that reminded me of this.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Like I got like a real vibe of the like because it's like the cr the clean cut ver dancing.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Clean cut sexy dancing, yeah, and at the same time they are losing money in the club because it's so clearly expensive with all these productions they're putting on it.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: It just made me think of that when I was watching this.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the art budget for Maubrey's bar is insane.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: Like it's but Maubre's is presented as the good guy bar.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: Like the girls who dance, they're happy to dance there, they're friends with each other.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: The regular Joes who are leering at all the women are nice guys, and nothing bad happens to you at Maubrey's.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: And the boss is a guy with a sense of humor.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: This is like our good guy place.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: And Alex, played by Jennifer Beals, the main character, the hot welder who wants to be a ballet dancer, her boss is like a perfect man, a like good-looking, rich dude who owns the steel mill and is like 30 years old.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: And good.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: I think he's like 40.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Oh, he's I okay.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: He looks 30.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, this is like one of these like perfect people.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: The love interest of the main character is a perfect person, like an ideal.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Um does almost nothing wrong the whole film.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: Like just like, you know, she gets mad at points, but it's like he's just a perfect object of affection.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: A lot of the things that she gets mad at are misunderstandings as well.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the men are never bad in this film.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: The men are never fully bad.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: Men are they're all staring at women, but these are good guys.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Like, that's one of the messages of the film.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: Guys, guys who lust after young, pretty girls, these are good guys.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: That's like one of the messages of the film.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: Unintentionally.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, like the one thing that really creeped me out was the age difference between her and him.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Right, he's supposed to be four.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: I think he I looked it up.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: He's supposed to be 36, and she is 36, okay, and she's 18.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: She's 18.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: First of all, 36 is pretty young to own a still mill, I want to say that.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: Yes, very young.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: Pretty pretty crazy.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: That's inherited.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: But she she is, I think she was 20 years old when she made this film, and she could look like early 20s.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: He could look like 30.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: It does not look like a little bit of a big thing.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: They could have made it.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Um they don't look that far off.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: It doesn't look like a thing where it makes your eyebrow, it doesn't look like bad.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: It doesn't look like what's this looks crazy.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: But when you when you learn, oh, she's just out of high school and he is in his late 30s and has been married once.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: That's a weird thing that nobody mentions or has a problem with in the film.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: No, it's not an issue whatsoever.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Um But they like the first time she's he sees her properly is that um when she's doing her dance at the current.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: Is it Mauber's?
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he sees her for the first I I don't I didn't write the name of the club.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: Um, it's love at first sight or lust at first sight at least.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Lust definitely lust at first sight.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: And uh he makes some like kind of bet bet with his best friend, I guess.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: Like Yeah, his friend is trying to make him bet on the Pittsburgh Steelers Pittsburgh Steelers game.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: That's the football team of Pittsburgh, and um and the guy wants the our rich young love interest boss to give him favorable odds.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: And I don't understand odds, but it's like give me three, give me uh three.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: I'll give you three for the Cowboys.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: No, three and a half.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: Oh no, yeah, I really did not understand what there was.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: I want three and a half, give me three.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Then they see Alex do her um sexy dance, yeah.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: And the guy's like, what if I give you information on her?
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: He's like, I'll give you six, which whatever that means.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: I guess it's like a good six to one, maybe?
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: I think it means like you can win by six points.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: I can win by six points and I still have to pay you money or something.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: I forget how it works.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: But um the guy's like, Oh, I know her, she works for you, she's your employee.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: So this is a movie about that says sexual harassment is good.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: Uh 36-year-olds should date 18-year-olds, and it would be really good for the 18-year-old to date the 36-year-old.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: But things work out if you do that.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he can teach us so much.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: And she should really be sexy all the time.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: And show off her body a lot of the time.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: And um 13-year-old me was like, Yes, this is a good movie.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: I love this.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: This is I'm on board.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: You're like, I'm 18 in five years, I can date a 36-year-old.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is gonna work out for me.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: I'll be super sexy and just pick up a rich 36-year-old.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: But he yeah, he got he approaches her at work and says hi to her uh for the first time.
- 20:15SPEAKER_02: She won't do it because she has moral.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: She's like, No, I don't date the boss.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: So Which is also logical.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Don't date the boss of a steel mill.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: Uh your boss.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: That's double your age.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: Um, but then she he wears her down by um just being persistent and following her home, being really interested.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he f yeah, he follows her home.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: He follows her home and like talks to her at her doorstep.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Uh things that are like super creepy, but the movie presents them as like cute and romantic.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: Like we're it, they're not the energy is not malicious.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: What we're watching and like smart enough to be like, that's this guy's bad news, this is bad behavior.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: But the movie it's like it's cute and romantic.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: He loves her, he's just he's got the best of intentions.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: He's a super rich, good-looking dude.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: What's her problem?
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: Um also her room her home is huge.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: She has a huge place.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Every location in the movie is beautiful.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: Um, and she lives like in a warehouse place that she's she's supposed to be super poor, right?
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: She like lives in a warehouse, she bicycles everywhere because she doesn't have a car.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: But her place is beautiful.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: Like I would love to live there.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: A dot a Silicon Valley millionaire would be happy to live in this loft that she set up by herself.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: Um but that is one of the I mean, strengths of the movie is that it's beautiful.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: Like everything looks really cool.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: Like But it's made to look in a rundown like the whole thing.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: Rundown cool, run down shit.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: Like rundown shake, I mean.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: Like it's like it's it's that poor, it's that like working class energy throughout the whole movie that they try and present, but it makes it still looks nice at the same time.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: Well, this is the weird thing about the director, Adrian.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: About this movie.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: So, like, yeah, the movie's unrealistic.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: He's twice her age.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Lots of dudes leering at young women, and it's presented as just regular Joes being nice guys.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: The logic of the movie is insane and dumb.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: Um But then I think the two there's like three basically big strengths.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: One is the music and the accompanying music sequences are great.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: That's like the strength of the movie.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: The second thing is like the whole movie looks good.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: Like Pittsburgh looks cool, her apartment looks cool.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: They they show scenery of her bicycling to work is really it just looks beautiful.
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: Um then the other thing that's really nice that I did not remember, and I only remembered when I watched it yesterday, is is there's lots of like nice little human moments like that have good sense of humor done by like really good character actors.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: Like when she tries to get an application, she picks up an application from the ballet school, and the secretary is sort of condescendingly going through the requirements, like, please write down all of your previous ballet training, starting with this.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: And then she leaves, and the rich boyfriend has followed her there and asks what was going on.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: The secretary in that in the interim has started to eat a sandwich, and her mouth is like full of food, and she's like embarrassed at this good-looking man walking up to the but it's like truly funny.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: It's like real a genuinely funny moment where she's like trying to finish this mouthful and talk to him.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: There's that interaction that Alex and her best friend uh Sonny have with a traffic cop in Pittsburgh who's directing traffic.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: That's great.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: That's so I really enjoyed all those moments.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: I think that was like a real guy in Pittsburgh who did all this who would like direct traffic in a very jokey way and pretend to trip the buses as they drove by and play violins and solemnly salute police cars when they went by.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: So, like there's just a silent sequence of Alex and Sonny interacting with this guy that's like really fun and warm and cool.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: There's like a lot of those moments in this movie.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: I think I what I really enjoy as well is that the way they set up so they set up a lot of her like dance moves, her picking everything up throughout the whole movie.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: Yes, she watches a guy do break dancing, yeah.
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: There's a big sequence, and that in itself is a cool sequence of these two guys doing breakdancing, but yeah, but then she's incorporated those moves into her final dance.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: That's pretty that's fun.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: I thought it I think it works really well.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Um so like you first like once she goes to her home, she finds you uh you see her like watching ballet on TV.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: We know that she's obsessed with ballet.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so we get it immediately.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: And then we see that she's trying to kind of mimic it.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's imitating the moves at home.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: Uh and then we see her mentor, she meets Hannah, who's this old woman, like a grandmother type that she somehow is friends with, who used to be a dancer when she's young, and this woman is like encouraging Alex to be a dancer and apply to the school and dream her dreams.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: And it's I I really enjoy all the scenes with Hannah.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there was a I really like them.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: In addition to all these kind of just like sexy time for dads, you know, weird, overproduced music videos, there's all these like really nice human moments that kind of stand up on you.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it's really heartwarming to see that connection between the two of them and like to see the m the mentorship.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: I think this is what the critics don't give it credit for.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: The critics are basically coming down hard on for how stupid the main story is, uh how I think just like shallow the love is of the main characters.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: But they're not giving it credit for like all these moments, like the conversations between Alex and Hannah are like good.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: They're like really moving and sweet and nice, and these actors are really good.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: I think Jennifer Bills is is decent in this.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: I don't have an issue with her in it.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: Uh she's well cast, I think.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: Uh she she does her job really well.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: I don't get the yeah, actually I I I'm I'm I'm being unfairly reserved.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: She she's good in this film.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: I think her main job is like be beautiful, but yeah, she also has to like get mad at her boyfriend for no reason and then forgive him right away and be scared to apply at the ballet school and then be very sweet to everybody because she's the good guy.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she she does a lot of turns.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: She does yeah, she has she does well with what she's given, I feel like.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, that's true.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: So we see that she wants to be a ballet dancer.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: We we meet her mentor, Hannah, who's encouraging her to be a real dancer, but then we see her go to the ballet school in in an effort to pick up the application, and she's so intimidated by how rich and rarefied and well trained everybody is that she's it's the training.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: I think really don't I notice that with her.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: She's like when when everyone's when whenever she said about the training and let write down all the schools you've trained at and everything, that's when it really clicks with her.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm not prepared for this.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: And she's like, without even getting an application.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: Um, and so that's like the central struggle.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: She doesn't think she's good enough, but she thinks she's good, she thinks she's only good enough to be uh to dance at this like halfway strip club sort of situation.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: And so the theme of this movie is like, do you follow your dreams?
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: Because we meet all these characters who are young people trying to decide to get the courage to pursue their dreams.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: So there's her, Alex, the welder who wants to be a ballet dancer, or I should say the art dancer in a dive bar who wants to be a ballet dancer in a ballet school.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: Then there's her friend Summer, who is a waitress at the bar or Sunny, who's a waitress at the bar that but she wants to be an ice skater, a figure skater.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and she's like well on her way to being one as well.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we see her in an exhibition, but she fails and does badly.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: And she has this big public humiliation where she falls on the ice and can't get up, or won't get up, because she she falls a couple times, and she refuses to get up, and so Alex watches her fail, and it's this huge public humiliation.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: It's like in front of her parents, in front of her boyfriend, in front of her best friend, yeah.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: Like she felt and and in front of all the judges and everything.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: So it's like a huge deal to have failed in front of everyone.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: It scares Alex, like, oh, this is what happens when you go for your dreams, you humiliate yourself.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Then there's the stand-up comic, his name is Richie, boy, boyfriend of Sonny.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: And he's whether he's wondering whether he should try to go to LA to be a real stand-up, which there's no way he should, right?
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: He's he is so bad.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: He has a almost a learning disability level of what he thinks his sense of humor is.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: Like he tells He's the only person laughing at his jokes.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: Uh this was like a type of character in 80s movies, the wannabe stand-up comic, where they all looked like Howie Mandel and they had like funny hats, and they're often like the harmless best friend of the main character.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: Um, stand-up comedy was like a thing that everybody was like fascinated with.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: Maybe still, but I I just remembered at that time, like the movie Fame, which came out a couple years before.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: There's a wannabe stand-up comic.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: There's often there's all these these guys you like want to make it in comedy or whatever.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, but he's so bad that but the what the movie presents him as is a sweet kid is doing his best, even though all his jokes are like Polak jokes or whatever.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I do I like I don't I don't know why there's so many of those in this movie, and it it made me really uncomforta that's the one thing that made me like really uncomfortable.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: I think it's the same way, like what would it what is sexy in a safe way to dads in the suburbs?
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: What are like naughty, edgy jokes to like dads in the suburbs, and it's like Polish jokes.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think it's supposed to be that this guy's edgy and raw, but really he's complete complete idiot.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: He is yeah, there's there's something really wrong with him.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: And I think he's great.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: I think he's great, and I want to see a DVD of his full routine.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: I think there should be a deleted scene where we get to see 45 minutes of Richie's n Netflix special.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: I would like to see his performance when he went to LA for the first time, just to see the LA crowd reacting to him.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: But I guess the theme of the movie is should these people pursue their dreams, right?
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: Like, and they're all scared to do it.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: He absolutely should not pursue that dream.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: Um everyone else, yeah, sure, you can pursue that dream.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: Sonny's a good figure skater.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: And Alex is a great dancer.
- 30:36unknown: Yeah.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: But that's it, right?
- 30:37SPEAKER_02: There's nobody else who's like really pursuing.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: I guess the um everybody else's dream is to have sex with young pretty girls.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: Like there's the owner of the strip club.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he wants to date Sonny.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: Ugh.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: And um He's so like over the top.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: Nick wants to date Alex, right.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: Nick, the owner of the steel belt one, but there's the owner of the strip club who wants to date Richie's girlfriend.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and he's so over the top.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: Right, he's a complete bad guy.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: Every time he opens his mouth, he says something sexist or sexual, mean or bullying, and throwing his management.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: He's like, Oh, I'm just kidding around, I'm just joking.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: Um but he wants the both of them to join.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: He also wants like Sonny, Sonny and Alex to join the strip club as well.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: There's a rival, there's a rivalry between good guy mobbies, where they do these art-directed music videos, and whatever his name is, strip club, where it's just show your tits, ladies.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: Make some real make some real money.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: It's uh Johnny.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: Johnny's his name.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: Johnny and uh Cecil, Cecil.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: Uh like his little assistant, like his little friend guy.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: His sil his silent little thug.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: Who ends up uh beating up uh Richie.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: Uh Richie later.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: He attacks Alex and they attack Alex and Richie and uh and then like Richie gets punched in the face and like his nose breaks, and then Nick is just standing off to the side, is like, cut it out.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: Nick just shows up and by saying cut it out, Johnny C backs off.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: And then she's like, Oh, thank you so much, Nick, and then Richie just walks off.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sorry about your nose.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: See you later, dude.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: Uh thanks for saving the day, good looking dude.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: Which is that made me laugh.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: Literally he's leaning on his car and he's like, cut it out.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's all he does.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: Um and then he immediately follows her home.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: Right, this is where he follows her home and in a sweet romantic gesture stalks her.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's very stalker.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: And is rewarded.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: It works.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because uh She agrees to a date with him.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she goes on a date with him, and they go to um they the the date is gonna be pizza at at uh at her place.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then they sleep together.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: And um I mean the move is only 90 minutes.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: We gotta we gotta move, you know, we can't like waste time on nuance.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: No, of course not.
- 33:04SPEAKER_02: They fall in love.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: Um There's a montage, yeah.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: There's a montage of them dating and being in love and stuff, and the love theme to flash dance plays.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: That's the name of the song, love theme to flash dance.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: Love theme to flash dance, okay.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: Which is an instrumental synthesizer number that I very 80s.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: I thought you were gonna say that you learned.
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: I've never learned that lesson.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: With the music, it still holds its spell over me.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, so you haven't learned to play it though.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Oh no, I wish.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: I should.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: It can't be that hard to play the synthesizer synthesizer.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll figure it out.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: I'm sure you have one as well, you're very musical.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: I'm super musical.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: There's two guitars behind you, I can say.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: I can't really play either of those well, but I I'm good at owning musical instruments, so although the first time I I remember the first time I saw you was on uh Chris Gethard's show, and you were like doing some kind of like bad thing.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: You bought like a trumpet and did it.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: French horn, yes.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: And it was one of the funniest things I'd say.
- 34:08SPEAKER_02: Yes, I played Song in the Clowns.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: Um I'm bad at the French horn too.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: Uh but yeah, like um Johnny C.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Johnny C.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: Is there two Johnny's?
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: Or you just want to like it?
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: I just like that Johnny C is too.
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: I just like that that's his name.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: That's always the bad guy, he's like always got like an initial for their last name.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: So Johnny C tips uh Sonny.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Sonny uh hundred dollars, yeah.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: Uh because he's like trying to work Yeah, and it's like basically almost almost as though he's like paying her off for for beating up his her boyfriend as well.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: Um and she takes the money.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: She takes the money and she like gets wooed by him.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: Um and then there's uh then there's the like strobe lighting dance, and I wrote down at this point, is this the flash dance of the title?
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: Because up until this point, what is flash dance?
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, I don't know what flash dance means.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: I think like I don't know.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: I yeah, it's never defined.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: So I was like, is is the strobe lighting dance the flash dance that you're talking about?
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: Seems like it could be.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: That's a pretty good guess.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: But um that's a really good sequence.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: I really enjoyed that sequence.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: Uh although it's it's it's tough to watch because it's so uh Epileptic should not watch it.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: It's like legit strobe light crazy.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: But um I loved it.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: There's no warning for it either.
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: MTV was like brand new when this movie came out.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: MTV was like a year old or something.
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: Oh like there were no music videos.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: So just like using strobe light and like cameras zooming in and out and like fast cuts were like it felt young and cool.
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: It it does not look that quick now to our modern eyes, but Flashdance when it came out, a lot of people were like, so many cuts.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: It moves so fast.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, now it looks kind of glacial, but like at the time.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: But that's the other thing, it got like editing nominations, didn't it?
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: Yes, uh, because it was sort of a new approach in in big budget movies.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: Because I watch it now and I'm like, yeah, editing's fine, it's nothing special.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: Well, it doesn't seem anything.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: The editing is for the music, the the dance performances, I think.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: Like outside of that, it's it's pretty straightforward editing.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: Um yeah.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: But yeah, so Alex goes to the ballet again.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: We see her at the ballet and with her mentor, Hannah.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: With the mentor Hannah, yeah.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: And see how much she's filled up with it and how much she loves it.
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: But then she sees her boyfriend with another woman at the ballet.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: And she immediately bikes to his house and throws up throws the one rock on the ground through his window.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well placed, art-directed rock.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: Shining in the streetlight.
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: She just picks it up and hurls it one perfect throw through his window.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he's got a mansion.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: He's got a huge place.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: Uh so he obviously lives in a very good area of this like Right, she's in the poor area, he's in the rich area.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Um bikes back to her house and her radiator's broken.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: Right, by contrast.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: And then uh R Richie shows up and tells her he's leaving for LA.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: And then she's like, But also he's leaving Sonny behind.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: He's got this devoted girlfriend that he's abandoning.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: They have like no connection, these two, like the the relationship.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: There's like no connection with this with their relationship.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: Uh Sonny and uh Sonny and Richie.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: Um, but and they but the weird thing is like they she goes to him, oh what will Sonny uh how will Sonny feel?
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: And she's like, he's like, she'll understand.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: And he's like, and then uh she goes, Oh, okay, bye.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: Just like give him a hug and like take care.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, don't try to talk him out of it.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: Just like, oh no, I guess that's that.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: He goes to LA.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: And then two minutes later he's back.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: He's back very soon.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: Like there's like two sequences, and he's back from LA.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: I'm like, wow, that was cool.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: I guess that makes sense.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, that is comedy.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: Because he definitely does he he says to her, like, oh, I got offered a job, but it's like a um what kind of job?
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: It's like some kind of like uh a waiter.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: Wait, yeah, a waiter job.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: And he's like, I d I can't be a waiter, I'm a chef or something.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: That's a joke, right?
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: He's pretending to be insulted at being offered a waiter because he's a cook, which is the job he hated back in Pittsburgh.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: But in in in the middle of that, um Nick's Nick and Alex argue in front of everyone at the steel mill and um make up.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: She's yeah, they make up immediately because he's like, No, that's my ex-wife, I have to take her out once a year to this place.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, men never do anything wrong.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: Whatever that uh never does anything wrong.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: Uh the older men they have they're rich, and the lesson is just do what these guys say, Alex.
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: They're just trying to help you.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: He's being considerate.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: He's taking out his ex-wife once a year.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: What's wrong with that?
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: There's nothing suspicious about that at all.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: Um then they go to a fancy restaurant and she's like sucking down lobster, I guess.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: She's like playing it with it seductively and eating it.
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: She very sexily eats a bunch of lobster.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: His ex-wife walks up to try to like intimidate Alex, and then she takes off her blazer, and instead of a she looks like she's wearing a tuxedo with a dress shirt, but when she takes off the coat, it's just like the front bib of a dress shirt, and otherwise she's topless in the restaurant.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: It's like the most 80s-looking outfit you can imagine, as well.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: That was like another iconic scene, was like the sex sexy scene where she's like basically topless in a French restaurant.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: And she's like rubbing him with her foot as well.
- 39:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: Dad fantasies galore.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: Um while his while his ex-wife watches.
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and he's done nothing wrong.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: He's a really nice guy.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: His super hot ex-wife, his super hot 18-year-old girlfriend, he's the good guy.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: Um the ex-wife gets intimid, like gets starts making like sly comments, and then uh Alex is like, oh, well, I've I fucked his brains out.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: The ex-wife is sort of trying to say, like, oh, I've heard a lot about you.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: You're just like a pretty little thing.
- 40:11SPEAKER_02: You're nothing but a trophy to him, and then he's like, Yeah, I fucked his brains out.
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: She like owns the fact that they have a sexual relationship, which I remember being like a big moment in the movie, like a big laugh.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: But there's a thing they set up in the at the beginning of the movie where she goes and makes makes a confession, and she says, like, she says, Oh, I've been thinking about sex, and she's like really embarrassed ashamed of it.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: So to like have that later on, it shows like she's kind of like moving to she's kind of uh growing up essentially, I think.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: She's going to embrace that fucking an older dude is a sign of freedom.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: She's growing up.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: Stop feeling ashamed of sex.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: What you should be doing is going to fuck older dudes who follow you home and have money, even if they're still seeing their ex-wives now and then.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: But um if Nick in the Nick's found out when when she went to the audition, uh, he found out what she wanted, and she like called he called in a favour to the place because he has he happens to have a connection there.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: Um to give her an audition even though she has no qualifications.
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: And so she gets mad.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Well, she gets the audition papers initially and she doesn't think she's yeah, she doesn't she doesn't realise that he's got them, but then he like they're going to celebrate in the car and he's like, Oh, I um I called the Yeah, and because he says he made the reservation the night before, she knows, oh, you arranged this and she's mad.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: And then she gets out, she she like immediately gets out of the car on under the on like the highway or whatever it is, and they like in the tunnel, and she like um and they mention basically cause like a huge commotion.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: I mean girls are crazy.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: Nobody seems to care.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what's to care.
- 41:53SPEAKER_02: That's what's cool about young girls.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: They'll go to French restaurants topless, but they're also gonna get out of the car on the highway.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: That's like what's you gotta appreciate both sides.
- 42:02SPEAKER_02: That's how you know this character has depth.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: She dances around in wet t-shirts on stage, but it's a good place.
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: And she'll fuck your brains up, but she still goes to confession.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: And she's got personality because she'll throw a tantrum and get out of your car in the middle of a highway.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: But uh then they they I guess they do like a time jump because it's they cut to Halloween, and that's when Richie's back.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:31SPEAKER_02: And she's quit dancing at at uh Mobbies, she's not dancing there anymore.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: She's quit dancing totally.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: And what you find out is also that uh um Sonny's uh quit as well.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: And she's working at the bad guy strip club and dating the bad guy.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: She's dating Johnny, Johnny C.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: He had worked his hundred dollar tip.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: Got the girl.
- 42:51SPEAKER_01: Because it shows how much money she could be making.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, Richie's like upset, but doesn't seem that bothered by it as well.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: So I like I don't know, he's already kind of past it at that point.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he seems only mildly upset that his girlfriend has dated his main rival who broke his nose and is dancing in a strip club.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: Um he's probably more upset that he had to come back from LA and like give up his dream of being a stand-up.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: Um but then like Alex gets her letter for the audition and um she tells Hannah uh she goes to yeah, she goes to tell Hannah about it.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: And but Hannah has died.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: Hannah's died, and she goes like Hannah's got a really nice house, and she's like trying to find every room, and then she eventually finds someone who says, Oh no, she died last night in like the calmest way.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: But no, sorry, she died last night.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: She died.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: And that's the there's no yeah, they don't give any context for it.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: It's just she died.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: And then yeah, and then she runs, she like bikes away, upset.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: But that convinces her to do the audition, like life is short.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: So uh and then she finds out that Sonny's uh working at the strip club now and drags her out of there.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: Saves her.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: Saves her from her life of sin.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:14SPEAKER_02: Come back to the good sexy dancing place, not the bad sexy dancing place.
- 44:19SPEAKER_01: And of course it's raining while she drags her out.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: Very dramatic.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: Pretty much topless.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: Barely covered.
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: Barely covered, yeah.
- 44:27SPEAKER_02: Uh just drops all her money in the water.
- 44:29SPEAKER_02: It's dirty money.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: It's dirty money she got from doing sexy dancing in the bad place.
- 44:34SPEAKER_02: She doesn't need that money.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: Only look that she's gonna we're all gonna be sexy dancers, one way or the other.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: But we're either gonna do it at a strip club or the nice guy bar or a ballet school.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: But we're doing sexy dancing one way or another.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's they're living their dreams.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: They're all living their dreams somehow.
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: They can't give it up.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: Um but Nick's go Nick goes to Alex's, they fight, and he's like, um, he tells her, if you give up on your dreams, you die.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: Right, that's the theme of the movie.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: If you give up on your dreams, which it's like it's not a bad, it's not necessarily a bad thing that he's saying, it's just the he's saying it in a bad way.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: He's not saying it in a correct way.
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: No.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: It's not the most well-worded phrase.
- 45:19SPEAKER_02: And then she agrees with him, right?
- 45:20SPEAKER_02: And she goes and does the audition.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: And she um who's I've I've written down that uh Tina tells her about her past.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: I don't remember who Tina is now.
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: Tina is the older dancer at the Good Guy Club.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: She goes back to Mobbies for some reason, and it's like, oh, what are you doing in here?
- 45:41SPEAKER_02: I thought you left.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: And she basically says that she used to have a dream, and her and basically she used to really care and try to do good dances at Mobbies, but now she doesn't do good dances at Mobbies.
- 45:52SPEAKER_02: She gave up on her dreams also.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: All around Alex are people who did not follow their dreams.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: But I I actually like, yeah, now I'm reminded of that scene.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: I actually like that scene because it it's very, it's very like.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: It's it's nice because it comes, it it's like very true to life as well.
- 46:20SPEAKER_01: I feel like that that that whole thing of like, oh, there's that you always find that older person that's kind of been involved sort of in the scene, but like does something slightly different to it but has kind of given up on it, and they're trying to mentor people now, or they're just like just getting on with their lives.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: And I think that's really nice to see that and to see uh Alex kind of take that on and take that into oh, I can't give up my dreams now, I have to keep I have to pursue it.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: Um and then she goes to confess just to like clear herself of any sin before she goes to audition.
- 46:52SPEAKER_02: Right, no sinning.
- 46:53SPEAKER_02: You gotta get rid of all the sex the bad sexiness, so you can only have good sexiness.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: And she goes to audition, and this is the famous scene of her in that giant uh very stuff it's it's stuff a stuffy room because of like everyone smoking so many cigars and everyone's like really uptight.
- 47:12SPEAKER_02: It feels like stodgy tweed jackets and sticks up their asses, and she blows them away with her breakdancing and diving through the air and sexual.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: Well, the first time the first time she slipped and she's like, Can I start again?
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: Oh right.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: Which there's there's no way they would allow that at that place.
- 47:28SPEAKER_02: But I guess she's trying to learn a lesson from her friend who fell on the ice and wouldn't get up.
- 47:32SPEAKER_02: That's I I didn't even put that together.
- 47:34SPEAKER_02: She's like, I'm not I'm gonna get up.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not gonna give up once I fall.
- 47:37SPEAKER_01: That's a yeah, that's a good thing.
- 47:38SPEAKER_02: So she's learning all the lessons of everybody.
- 47:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: And uh so they've got like but what I found funny was each one of them had their own their own like little uh personality tick that they had like so one of them had like the cigar, one of them had like a was like trying to grab a cigarette, one of them was blowing his nose constantly.
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: They all had one different individual thing just to differentiate each other.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: And then they all like look up one at a time, like shocked by her, and really start getting into it.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: And the um she dives into a break dance, which was like Yeah.
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: That was that was really good.
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: I like that.
- 48:17SPEAKER_02: I love that sequence, I think it's great.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: It's three it's three different dancers.
- 48:21SPEAKER_02: Three different dances?
- 48:23SPEAKER_02: Three different people did the dancing in that.
- 48:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, four if you can't Jennifer Beals.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like she's obviously just like any.
- 48:30SPEAKER_02: One person did the breakdancing moves, one person did the dive through the air into the summer song.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: That makes sense, and then somebody else did most of the other dancing, and then that's the close-up shots, it's Jennifer Beals.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: So did Jennifer was Jennifer Beals not able to do any of the dancing really, then for the most part?
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: Not really.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think she could.
- 48:50SPEAKER_02: No.
- 48:52SPEAKER_02: There was a French woman who did like 90% of the dancing.
- 48:55SPEAKER_02: That's interesting.
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: I'm sure there are some shots where it's Jennifer.
- 48:58SPEAKER_02: I'm sure she was a fine dancer, but she wasn't like at this intensely perfect level that they needed for all these like crazy artistic moves.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: No, I always assumed like the most the most tricky parts of dancing were other people, but I just didn't I thought they hired her because she was a dancer and able to do these things.
- 49:14SPEAKER_02: I don't think so.
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, interesting.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: Um, but then yeah, she just she runs out the building, um, and Nick's standing at his car with a like a bouquet of roses, he hands he hands them to her.
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: She like takes one out and hands it back, and there's a freeze frame, and it ends.
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: And that's the end of the movie.
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: She's she's got style.
- 49:36SPEAKER_02: She'll take your roses, but she's gonna give you one back.
- 49:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you get one.
- 49:39SPEAKER_02: You get one for helping out.
- 49:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:42SPEAKER_02: And the moral is she should have slept with this guy right away and just let him do whatever he wanted, and her life her life got better.
- 49:49SPEAKER_01: So, what you assume from this from what you assume from the ending is like she got in, they stay together forever, they have the perfect relationship, she goes on to become a ballet dancer.
- 49:58SPEAKER_01: That's what you're gonna assume.
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: She's gonna get her dream.
- 50:01SPEAKER_01: She gets her dream, he gets his dream.
- 50:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:03SPEAKER_01: Uh she'll bring Sonny along eventually.
- 50:06SPEAKER_01: Uh hire her to be her like a secretary and give her orders.
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: Uh the other guy can go and be a stand-up at at the place somehow.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: He'll yeah, he'll be the MC at Mobbies.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he'll definitely that's that's the height of his career being at an EMC there.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: Like that's gonna that's all he'll end up doing.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: You know that.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: Maybe he'll buy Mobby someday.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: We'll save it up from his uh from being a cook there.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: Um But yeah, what I like about it is that it's I like the working class themes of like pursuing your dreams and like really going for them.
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: I I I like that's that part of it.
- 50:44SPEAKER_01: Um it's interesting that you like the dancing and the music so much.
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: I like the music, I don't think the dancing holds up as well.
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, again, I might be just sentimental attachment, you know.
- 50:58SPEAKER_02: Just I just remember being thrilled by those sequences when I was younger, so that might still be holding sway over me.
- 51:04SPEAKER_01: I don't think any of the so I like the dancing from her in in Morbies.
- 51:09SPEAKER_01: I don't like any of the other dances in there.
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: I don't think they're just finger skating?
- 51:13SPEAKER_02: Or the other dancers.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: The other dancers in the in Morbies.
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: I don't think they're I don't think they're you don't like Manhunt?
- 51:20SPEAKER_02: No going on a man.
- 51:23SPEAKER_02: That song is insane.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: That song is not good.
- 51:28SPEAKER_02: Uh um, yeah, yeah.
- 51:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 51:33SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 51:33SPEAKER_01: It's just yeah, but I guess like what so what is it that you uh you've can't you've touched on it a lot throughout, but like what is it that you love about the movie itself?
- 51:42SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: Well, I do like the dance sequences.
- 51:45SPEAKER_02: I think all like the music video parts are fun and and they're very dated, but I still think they're fun and cool.
- 51:52SPEAKER_02: And I do think there are these like a pretty fairly high number of like human moments that get snuck in.
- 51:58SPEAKER_02: There's one fight that Nick and Alex have where there's a woman at the food truck who's just like watching them yell at each other.
- 52:04SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 52:05SPEAKER_02: And like when she's like, Why don't you go to your ex-wife and do uh you gotta do this and go fuck some blonde?
- 52:11SPEAKER_02: And then it cuts to the food truck woman just like making a face like whoa, look at this.
- 52:15SPEAKER_02: I think that's like legit funny.
- 52:17SPEAKER_02: Um when they later make up, I think it's even later in that same sequence when they make up at the end of that fight, all the other guys at the stool meal are having lunch, who they all applaud.
- 52:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's kind of sweet.
- 52:30SPEAKER_02: The um when Sonny's doing figure skating, her dad and mom are watching in the stands, and the dad goes when she's she starts off, great.
- 52:39SPEAKER_02: And the dad goes, Whoa, and then he says to his wife, There's you 20 years ago, look at that.
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: And it's kind of a sweet little moment where he's reminiscing.
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: There's like there's like there's a fair number of these like legit, nice human things that counteract a lot of the kind of boorish stuff.
- 52:56SPEAKER_02: So I think that's why the movie worked.
- 52:59SPEAKER_02: The video the music videos, these little human moments, and even though the story is dumb, it's a formula that people like.
- 53:06SPEAKER_02: The poor kid gets the confidence to believe in her dreams and gets them.
- 53:11SPEAKER_02: You know it's a very common formula, but it's also like Yeah, but it's also like back then it wasn't an old formula necessarily.
- 53:18SPEAKER_01: It was kind of a newer sort of formula.
- 53:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Flash Dance is one of the ones that cemented it.
- 53:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Rocky, like like you say, Rocky, but like that's only a few years prior.
- 53:25SPEAKER_02: Well, Rocky was 75, this is 83.
- 53:28SPEAKER_02: Um, but there weren't a lot of movies that like would successfully pull it off to become like the iconic poor kid makes it big.
- 53:35SPEAKER_02: Uh and Flashdance was one of them.
- 53:37SPEAKER_01: Especially like including it uh like dancing within it as well.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: That's that's something that's like a new edition that you don't that you didn't get around that time, I feel like.
- 53:45SPEAKER_02: I mean Dirty Dancing came out four years later, I think, or five at the most.
- 53:51SPEAKER_02: A much better movie, but a similar like poor kid who's lost uses dance to like find herself.
- 53:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:58SPEAKER_01: So the most common one that like the one from where I would have been around the same age as you were were for uh when I saw it for the first time was uh Save the Last Dance.
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: That's like a that's very similar to this.
- 54:09SPEAKER_02: Yes, I think that's a pretty good movie.
- 54:10SPEAKER_02: I saw that.
- 54:11SPEAKER_02: Isn't it alright?
- 54:12SPEAKER_02: I enjoy it.
- 54:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I enjoy it.
- 54:13SPEAKER_02: It's probably the same as Flash Dance, there's probably a lot of dumb parts, but yeah, it's probably not a lot of horror.
- 54:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:23SPEAKER_02: Her dancing is like the stage come out around the same time, there's like a number of and then step up.
- 54:27SPEAKER_02: Oh, I don't even know what that is.
- 54:28SPEAKER_02: I don't even know what sentence that is.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: So it's been done a lot since then, but I guess, but like, yeah, this is one of the originals, and it it it does it, I think it does it well.
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: I think it does the whole film.
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: I think it's a good film.
- 54:44SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's a bad film.
- 54:45SPEAKER_02: Save the last dance or flash dance.
- 54:46SPEAKER_02: Oh, flash dance.
- 54:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think there's more good than bad.
- 54:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:51SPEAKER_02: And a lot of it is the look.
- 54:52SPEAKER_02: Like, I think the director does it looks good, and and even though things like, oh, his he's twice her age, it doesn't look like that.
- 54:59SPEAKER_02: Like it you you are not hit over the head with that.
- 55:01SPEAKER_02: Because later he would direct Lolita, you know.
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: He did a movie version of the Lolita, which is about a literal child molester and his victim.
- 55:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:12SPEAKER_02: And so he was criticized then because he made a really sexy Lolita, like a really sexy 14-year-old.
- 55:18SPEAKER_02: Um I haven't I haven't seen it.
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: And I've heard that like Seven Day Says actually is a well-made movie.
- 55:23SPEAKER_02: So like and he did Nine and a Half Weeks, was like a really like sexual movie with Kim Basing and Mickey Rourke.
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: He did Fatal Attraction, were like, you know, he's like into like he's into that style, like uh forbidden sex as perceived by these suburbs.
- 55:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:39SPEAKER_02: And um it's like a voyeuristic uh yeah, like this is this is how the nasty people live.
- 55:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: Um compared to all those, Flashdance is quite tame.
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: It's very tame.
- 55:50SPEAKER_01: Even like like you said, it's but it is tame now, like watching it.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: It's a tame movie for for an R-rating as well.
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: I it's barely an R rating.
- 55:59SPEAKER_01: Like there's a couple of swear words in it.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: Um you you see look you say it's breasts briefly, but like very, very, very briefly.
- 56:08SPEAKER_01: If you take those two things out of it, it's not an R rating, it's like a PG.
- 56:12SPEAKER_02: That's right, yeah.
- 56:14SPEAKER_02: If she doesn't say I fuck his brains out, and we just don't show the breasts in the strip club, probably could have been PG thirty, probably could have been PG or PG 13 or whatever.
- 56:22SPEAKER_02: They didn't have PG thirteen at that time, but whatever.
- 56:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 56:25SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, that's true.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: It would definitely have been PG then.
- 56:28SPEAKER_02: Uh it's probably it's yeah, it's very I think it's alright.
- 56:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I and also it's short.
- 56:32SPEAKER_02: It's 90 minutes.
- 56:33SPEAKER_02: Like this movie is very fast.
- 56:35SPEAKER_02: So it's not a bad thing.
- 56:38SPEAKER_02: Like I think it's movies don't need to be that long.
- 56:41SPEAKER_02: If you're willing to see, if you're willing to laugh at how chauvinistic this movie is, and just enjoy the music and enjoy these like nice little side characters who are really quite nice.
- 56:50SPEAKER_02: This is a this is a fun movie.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 56:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: Uh do you have anything else you want to say about it?
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, actually, I want to I like the song Maniac.
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: Maniac, yeah, that's a great song.
- 57:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:04SPEAKER_01: I really enjoy that sequence, actually.
- 57:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's great.
- 57:07SPEAKER_01: But so there's one thing there there is one thing where I noticed where every time she dances, except for the ending, every time she dances, there's some kind of like water sequence involved in it.
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, is that right?
- 57:19SPEAKER_01: So she's like really sweating in that one, and it's like it's water spraying everywhere while she's doing that.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: In many.
- 57:25SPEAKER_01: So like, yeah, so like every time you see it, until the last one, you don't really sit, you don't see like any kind of water in that.
- 57:30SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
- 57:31SPEAKER_01: It's just strange.
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: I wish she pulled the rope in the middle of the audition one and somehow she'd had a bucket of water ready to go.
- 57:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: I never really thought about it until until the end of it.
- 57:41SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh yeah, she obviously this is not the one lesson she forgot to take with her.
- 57:47SPEAKER_01: Okay, so let's move on to the final segment, which is um just a brief segment that's I want to know a well-reviewed movie that you don't think is a good movie.
- 57:57SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 57:58SPEAKER_02: Um I wasn't ready for this.
- 57:59SPEAKER_02: You probably warned me and I forgot to think of it.
- 58:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's in the email.
- 58:03SPEAKER_02: But uh give me a second and I will tell you one.
- 58:08SPEAKER_02: Okay, um, I got one.
- 58:10SPEAKER_02: Um uh Dunkirk by Christopher Nolan.
- 58:15SPEAKER_02: Oh uh very well regarded movie, and I just think it's boring.
- 58:20SPEAKER_02: Um I couldn't tell any of the characters apart, so I didn't really know what was going on.
- 58:25SPEAKER_02: And I mean, it's obviously a super well-made movie, and Nolan is an excellent film director.
- 58:32SPEAKER_02: People really love this movie, but um but just my own personal experience of it.
- 58:35SPEAKER_02: I found myself bored, and I think it's because I couldn't tell the people apart.
- 58:38SPEAKER_02: And also, I do get tired of movies that are like this is just an intellectual problem.
- 58:45SPEAKER_02: It's not fair, maybe for me to blame the movie for this.
- 58:49SPEAKER_02: But like uh if the film is both glorifying war, but also saying how horrible it is, it feels like cheating.
- 58:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it's kind of like look how glorious these young boys are who gave their lives, but it isn't war horrible.
- 59:03SPEAKER_02: And I'm kind of like in an in a way that's unfair to say this movie's part of the problem.
- 59:09SPEAKER_02: You are glorifying the sacrifice, and I know you mean well, but I think the net effect is bad and just makes people wave their flags a little harder, and that's bad for everybody.
- 59:23SPEAKER_02: But I know that's not totally fair to hold Dunkirk responsible for that.
- 59:27SPEAKER_02: But I was thinking while I was watching, I was like, I'm sick of these war movies.
- 59:29SPEAKER_02: Who's this?
- 59:30SPEAKER_02: Who's this guy?
- 59:31SPEAKER_02: What's going on?
- 59:32SPEAKER_02: I hate this.
- 59:33SPEAKER_02: And then I read all the reviews, and it's like, what a masterpiece.
- 59:35SPEAKER_02: And I was like, a masterpiece?
- 59:36SPEAKER_02: I'll never watch that movie again.
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: I I actually agree with you.
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: I didn't enjoy it as well.
- 59:41SPEAKER_01: Like I for the same reasons.
- 59:43SPEAKER_01: Um Did you see 1917?
- 59:46SPEAKER_02: I did.
- 59:47SPEAKER_01: Do you think that's any better?
- 59:49SPEAKER_02: Yes, I mean that movie's a thrill.
- 59:51SPEAKER_02: Like it was completely thrilling to watch.
- 59:54SPEAKER_02: Um I think it does not glorify Wara.
- 59:58SPEAKER_02: These two kids are stuck in a situation they don't want to be, and they're just trying to like save other I don't know, it's it felt different to me.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_02: It felt much more individual and personal, and it was I don't think it was trying to make a statement about World War One in general or even war in general.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_02: It's just like it's about the these two kids and how they respond to an insanely high-stakes situation.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then the actual just like energy of the chase sequences, the movie, is yeah, exciting.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_02: So I I love 1917.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_02: But I think I think I don't think it's like a grand statement.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_02: I think it's just an awesome thrill.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_01: I think the two that actually do it best are um Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_01: I think they're the two that kind of show you walk out of what it really is war.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_02: You're like, war is insane, and why do we do it?
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_02: And so that feels I like that message better, at least.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I completely agree.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_02: I don't think you have to agree with a movie to respect it, so that is a I'm I don't necessarily You just don't enjoy it.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you just might not enjoy it, and so that's fair, yeah.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_01: But that's all this is.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_01: This is just like, well, look, the critics think one thing, we think another thing, so just compare it, just see what Yeah.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, okay.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_01: Well, this was great.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_01: You gave a very great answer for Flash Dance, and you like summed it up why it's actually a decent movie.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_01: Um do you have any plug, anything you want to plug, or how can we find you online?
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: Can I plug a series of things?
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_01: Go for it.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_01: I'll keep it.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_02: No, no, go for it.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: I'll do it quickly.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_02: I have a podcast uh called I Will Write Your Book.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_02: I will write your book.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_02: And it's improvised, and I play a guy who writes books for other people, and the podcast is me meeting with the people who want books written, and they're all insane characters that my comedian friends play.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_02: And so I think that's a fun podcast.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_02: So I was a new podcast.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_02: It's pretty new, yeah.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_02: Just pass.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say, because I I've seen like some of your other books.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_01: I've heard some of your other podcasts, I haven't heard that one before.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I will write your book.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_02: It's new.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'm gonna have to check that one out, definitely.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_02: Um and um, yeah, there was just an episode with Jason Manzucas that I think is incredibly funny.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, nice.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_02: And I think people really like it.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_02: And then the other thing I'm gonna plug is a really boring thing, but my friend and I made a band and we released an album, and I would like to plug that album.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_02: And the band is called Wayne and Rodney, even though the members are Will and Joel.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_02: And we have an album and it's called Turn It Up, and it's like on Spotify and Apple Music, and it's just they're just songs, they're not comedy songs.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_02: It's just two guys having a very sweet midlife crisis where they just decide they want to be in a band and they make an album, and it's me and my friend, and he's quite musical, and I have hubris, and so we made an album.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_02: And it kind of sounds like um they might be giants meet REM, I think.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's cool.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_02: Um, but not as good as either of those bands.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_02: But that's that's our pretty sure I know that, but um But uh yeah, so I will write your book, the podcast, and Turn It Up, the album by me and my friend.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: Well everyone go and check those out, please.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: Uh do you have any uh how can we find you online as well?
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_02: Oh my Twitter account, W I L L H I N E S.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_02: And an Instagram account.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_02: Um I have an Instagram account, Willie B.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_02: Hines, W I L L I E B H I N E S.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_02: Those are that that's where my public life is demonstrated.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_01: Could you not get Will Hines on Instagram or you wanted to just go different?
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_02: I couldn't get it.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_01: Uh I I'm the side I couldn't get Yanis Cove on Twitter somehow.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_02: Surprised.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_01: I know, it's it's some like old Greek man that took it.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_02: Ah, my sympathies.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_01: But anyway, thanks so much for coming on, Will.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_02: Uh you're welcome, Yannis.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_02: Thanks for having me.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_01: That's the end of the podcast.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: You can find me on Twitter with the username at YCo or at Yannis Cove on Instagram.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_01: Please remember to rate and review us on iTunes if you enjoyed this so I can end up making more.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_01: And I'll see you next week for more movies that critics got wrong.
