- 2:51Speaker 4: We were on our way out from the office and
- 2:52Speaker 4: it was eight fifty six am when we got to
- 2:54Speaker 4: the SNH Paper Company on Fourth Street.
- 2:56Speaker 5: The rear entrance. Where do we find it?
- 3:00Speaker 4: Joe upstairs, no main floor, So told me we'd find
- 3:03Speaker 4: her in the timekeeper's office.
- 3:04Speaker 5: He said it was near the back door entrance. We
- 3:05Speaker 5: couldn't miss it. And let's give a look on the car.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Maybe one of the workers can tell us.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Yeah, right, looks like some kind of an officerer.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Does it just be on the time clock?
- 3:17Speaker 6: H Let's see if pay master head time keep for you.
- 3:19Speaker 5: That's it. The door is locked. Head. You want to
- 3:23Speaker 5: wrap on the pay window?
- 3:24Speaker 6: Yeah, yes, police officers. Man, we have an appointment where
- 3:31Speaker 6: the miss Edith Table.
- 3:32Speaker 7: Oh yes, officers, I'm Edith Table. Just to more please
- 3:35Speaker 7: all ring the buzzer.
- 3:36Speaker 8: Just push on the door.
- 3:37Speaker 5: All right, thank you, man, go ahead, all right.
- 3:44Speaker 7: Are you the one I talked to on the phone,
- 3:45Speaker 7: Sergeant Friday.
- 3:46Speaker 5: Yes, man, that's right. Just my partner, Sergeant Jacobs.
- 3:48Speaker 4: How you do this is about your brother, Miss Tabor,
- 3:51Speaker 4: h Ralph Tabor?
- 3:52Speaker 5: Is that right?
- 3:53Speaker 7: Yes, that's right.
- 3:54Speaker 9: I know there must be something wrong or else's been
- 3:56Speaker 9: gone since Sunday. I one's seen him, No one's heard
- 3:58Speaker 9: from him. I'm worried sick about it.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Last time you saw him was on Sunday.
- 4:02Speaker 9: No, I didn't actually see him. I talked to him
- 4:04Speaker 9: on the phone, made a date for dinner. Ralph and
- 4:06Speaker 9: I always have dinner together Sunday nights. It's about the
- 4:09Speaker 9: only time in the week we do get to see
- 4:10Speaker 9: each other.
- 4:11Speaker 5: I see.
- 4:12Speaker 4: I believe you told me on the phone. You already
- 4:14Speaker 4: checked with most of his friends. The places he'd most
- 4:16Speaker 4: likely be.
- 4:16Speaker 7: Is that I called everyone I can think of No
- 4:18Speaker 7: one's seen him.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Your brother's never done anything like this, perfomance, going off
- 4:21Speaker 6: without telling.
- 4:21Speaker 7: Anyone, No, never, I'm very worried, Sergeant.
- 4:24Speaker 6: Can you think of any reason at all why I'd
- 4:26Speaker 6: want to disappear of his own free will?
- 4:27Speaker 5: I mean, no, no.
- 4:28Speaker 9: Reason in the world for it. He seemed perfectly all
- 4:30Speaker 9: right when I talked to him on the phone Sunday.
- 4:32Speaker 9: Everything was fine. He made a date for the movies
- 4:35Speaker 9: Tuesday night. That was for last night picture downtown we
- 4:39Speaker 9: wanted to see. He made a special point of it.
- 4:41Speaker 9: I just know something must have happened.
- 4:44Speaker 5: I gather you know most of your brother's friends. You've
- 4:46Speaker 5: kept in fairly close touch with him.
- 4:48Speaker 9: Yes, we get together at least once a week. As
- 4:50Speaker 9: I say, I'm four years older than Ralph. I've looked
- 4:53Speaker 9: after him since we were kids. We've always been together,
- 4:56Speaker 9: last five or six years, especially ever since Mama died.
- 4:58Speaker 6: Your brother in a pretty stable metal condition. Was he
- 5:01Speaker 6: no financial worries, nothing of.
- 5:02Speaker 7: That kind, No certain nothing I know about.
- 5:05Speaker 4: I had like to double check this information that you
- 5:08Speaker 4: gave me on the phone, miss Table, the name and
- 5:10Speaker 4: address and his descriptions. Yes, the full name Ralph Lawrence
- 5:15Speaker 4: Taber won four three one six al Maiden Street, male,
- 5:18Speaker 4: white American occupation interior.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Decorators at it.
- 5:21Speaker 7: Yes, that's right.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Height, five foot eleven hundred and fifty five pounds, dark
- 5:26Speaker 4: blonde haired, gray eyes, fair complexion, birthmark on left side
- 5:29Speaker 4: of neck.
- 5:30Speaker 7: Yes, that's all correct.
- 5:31Speaker 6: Your brother in the habit of carrying large sums of
- 5:32Speaker 6: money around with him, do you know?
- 5:34Speaker 7: No, not that I know of. He has a good job.
- 5:36Speaker 7: He's not getting rich at it, though.
- 5:38Speaker 9: I don't think I've ever seen Ralph with more than
- 5:40Speaker 9: twenty thirty dollars on him at a time.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Who was the last person to see him? Miss you
- 5:45Speaker 5: any idea?
- 5:46Speaker 8: Well?
- 5:46Speaker 9: I talked to Ralph's land lady. She told me she
- 5:48Speaker 9: saw Ralph and this friend of his, Andy Howard, going
- 5:51Speaker 9: into Ralph's apartment. That was about six o'clock Sunday night.
- 5:54Speaker 9: Ralph was supposed to meet me at seven point thirty.
- 5:56Speaker 9: Never showed up.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Well, this friend of your brother's, miss table, this Andy Howard.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Are you acquainted with him?
- 6:01Speaker 9: Yes, but I don't know him too well. I only
- 6:03Speaker 9: met him two or three times. He lives in the
- 6:05Speaker 9: apartment house next door to Ralph's. So the two of
- 6:08Speaker 9: them were friends in the navy together during the war.
- 6:10Speaker 8: Good friends.
- 6:11Speaker 5: You try to get in touch with this Andy Hard.
- 6:13Speaker 8: Yes.
- 6:13Speaker 9: I called Ralph's apartment when he didn't show up for
- 6:15Speaker 9: our dinner date Sunday night. Wasn't any answer, so I
- 6:18Speaker 9: looked up Andy's number in the phone book and called him.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Was he at home?
- 6:22Speaker 7: Yes?
- 6:23Speaker 9: Tried to talk to him, but it didn't do much good.
- 6:26Speaker 9: Stream How's that he pretended he didn't even know me.
- 6:30Speaker 4: After we finished our interview with Edith Tabor, ed Jacobs
- 6:36Speaker 4: and I started out to double check with all unknown
- 6:38Speaker 4: friends and associates of her brother. We talked to his
- 6:40Speaker 4: employer and the people he worked with. None of them
- 6:43Speaker 4: had seen him subsequent to six o'clock Sunday night. None
- 6:46Speaker 4: of them could think of any good reason why he
- 6:48Speaker 4: suddenly would want to pick up and leave his job
- 6:49Speaker 4: and friends. The people he knew outside of his work
- 6:53Speaker 4: told us the same thing. Nobody could explain it. Along
- 6:56Speaker 4: the way, we inquired about Ralph Tabor's friend, Andy Howard.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Most of the people we talked to knew him as
- 7:02Speaker 4: a close friend of Tabor's. We checked at Howard's place
- 7:05Speaker 4: of employment, but they told us he hadn't shown up
- 7:07Speaker 4: for work since the previous Friday. We drove to Howard's apartment,
- 7:11Speaker 4: checked with a manager, and he said that Howard had
- 7:13Speaker 4: moved without notice. Late Sunday night, we crossed over to
- 7:17Speaker 4: the apartment house next door where Tabor lived and talked
- 7:19Speaker 4: to the landlady and missus Higby. She corroborated the story
- 7:22Speaker 4: we'd gotten from Tabor's sister that Andy Howard was last
- 7:25Speaker 4: seen entering Tabor's apartment at about six o'clock Sunday night.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Tabor was with him. Missus Higby was sure of that.
- 7:32Speaker 4: She showed us up to the third floor to Ralph
- 7:33Speaker 4: Tabor's apartment. The two rooms and the adjoining kitchenette were immaculate.
- 7:37Speaker 4: There wasn't a thing out of place.
- 7:38Speaker 6: I need us a pin Joe, not a thing out order.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Yeah, it's the same in the bedroom, same as Higby. Yes,
- 7:45Speaker 4: do you provide maide service with the apartments here?
- 7:47Speaker 5: No, we don't.
- 7:49Speaker 10: We've been thinking about it though, haven't made up our minds.
- 7:53Speaker 10: Such a task getting good competent health.
- 7:55Speaker 6: These days, the tenants are responsible for the entire upkeep.
- 7:58Speaker 10: Yes, everything, painting, wall, papering, things like that. Doesn't mister Taber,
- 8:04Speaker 10: keep things spotless, just spotless.
- 8:07Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am, it's just one thing I want to ask
- 8:09Speaker 5: you about. It's over here by the window.
- 8:11Speaker 4: Yes, this wire here apparently an aerial connection for a
- 8:16Speaker 4: television set, which like.
- 8:18Speaker 10: Yes, mister Taber does have a television Why.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Well, I don't notice a set anywhere in the apartment.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Would you have to recall if he sent it out
- 8:26Speaker 4: for repairs anything like that?
- 8:27Speaker 8: No, not that I know of.
- 8:30Speaker 10: Besides, this doesn't seem like mis to table at all.
- 8:33Speaker 5: What do you mean, miss Higby? He's always so.
- 8:35Speaker 10: Neat, fastidiously And that wire there looks like it was
- 8:40Speaker 10: torn off the connection, doesn't it along the window sill too,
- 8:43Speaker 10: is not terrible fastness for the wire right out of
- 8:47Speaker 10: the woodwork. That certainly doesn't seem like mister Tabor.
- 8:51Speaker 5: Anyone else besides him have access to this.
- 8:54Speaker 10: Apartment man, No one that I know of, No one
- 8:57Speaker 10: besides myself.
- 8:58Speaker 7: I mean I have duplicate keys to all the apartments.
- 9:01Speaker 10: Well, I just happened to think, yes, ma'am, if a
- 9:04Speaker 10: repair man did move to set out, it's possible my
- 9:07Speaker 10: hosboy might know about it.
- 9:09Speaker 8: Sam, that's my houseboy.
- 9:11Speaker 5: How would he know about it.
- 9:12Speaker 8: Well, it's the rule of the house.
- 9:14Speaker 10: All furniture heavy things like that, they have to be
- 9:16Speaker 10: taken down in the freight elevator. Dope's right onto the
- 9:19Speaker 10: alley in the back of the building. It's very handy.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am.
- 9:22Speaker 10: Sam's the only one who operates that elevator. That's why
- 9:25Speaker 10: I say it's possible he might know about it. Would
- 9:28Speaker 10: you like to have me ask him?
- 9:29Speaker 5: I wonder if you would please, surely it.
- 9:31Speaker 10: Won't take a bit a minute and I'll be.
- 9:32Speaker 8: Right back, Thank you.
- 9:36Speaker 5: Joe, you want to have a look over here? Yeah,
- 9:39Speaker 5: what do you got?
- 9:39Speaker 11: It's all bed here. I tried to pull it down
- 9:41Speaker 11: and stuck stand right here over here. See if you
- 9:47Speaker 11: notice anything?
- 9:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I do. You want to give me a hand?
- 9:50Speaker 5: See if we can't get the bed down? Yeah, push
- 9:53Speaker 5: in on your side there, Okay, that's it. Okay, it's
- 9:56Speaker 5: coming down.
- 9:56Speaker 11: There, good lad. Yeah, Tabor, you think.
- 10:05Speaker 5: All the description seems to fit. Beaten to death looks
- 10:08Speaker 5: like dinner.
- 10:09Speaker 11: Something sticking out under the bedcover is there?
- 10:13Speaker 5: Yeah? It's a clawhammer stains all over it.
- 10:16Speaker 11: Vicious guess a killer one.
- 10:18Speaker 5: To make sure it's all of the worst i've seen.
- 10:21Speaker 12: Feel sorry for the sister. She's pretty close to him.
- 10:23Speaker 12: It's gonna be tough on her, No tougher than it.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Was for him.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Two point thirty eight pm, we phoned the office, told
- 10:32Speaker 4: him what we'd found, and then we put in a
- 10:33Speaker 4: call for Lieutenant Lee Jones and the crime lab grew
- 10:36Speaker 4: While we were waiting, we questioned the landlady again, missus Higbee.
- 10:40Speaker 4: She said her houseman Sam told her he knew nothing
- 10:42Speaker 4: about a television set being moved out of.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Ralph Tabor's apartment.
- 10:45Speaker 4: However, it was possible somebody could have taken the set
- 10:48Speaker 4: down in the main elevator late at night without being seen.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Missus Higby also told us that Tabor had a car.
- 10:54Speaker 4: We checked the apartment garage, but it was gone. All
- 10:57Speaker 4: missus Higby could tell us was that it was a
- 10:59Speaker 4: late model and the table often loanded to his friend
- 11:02Speaker 4: Andy Howard. Sergeant's Al Shambra and Joe Lamonica from Homicide
- 11:07Speaker 4: arrived and together the four of us interviewed the employees
- 11:10Speaker 4: and the tenants in the apartment building.
- 11:12Speaker 5: They gave us little or nothing at all.
- 11:14Speaker 4: A few minutes before three pm, the crime lab crew
- 11:16Speaker 4: showed up and started their preliminary investigation.
- 11:19Speaker 5: We put in a call for the coroner.
- 11:21Speaker 4: From the obvious lack of fingerprints and usual places around
- 11:24Speaker 4: the apartment, it was apparent that the murderer had taken
- 11:26Speaker 4: great precautions to cover his tracks. Three point thirty five
- 11:30Speaker 4: pm the deputy coroner arrived and after the preliminary investigation
- 11:33Speaker 4: was finished, the body was removed to the county morgue
- 11:36Speaker 4: Ed and I went back to the office, checked our
- 11:38Speaker 4: DMV and got out on all points on Tabor's car
- 11:41Speaker 4: and also on the friend he was last seen with,
- 11:43Speaker 4: Andy Howard.
- 11:45Speaker 5: R and I turned up a single.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Entry for Howard's criminal record, a drunk driving charge. Five
- 11:50Speaker 4: twenty pm we met with Edith Taber and broke the
- 11:53Speaker 4: news of her brother's death. When she recovered from the shock,
- 11:56Speaker 4: we interviewed her briefly.
- 11:58Speaker 7: It was Andy Howard.
- 11:59Speaker 8: I know it was him. It had to be.
- 12:00Speaker 6: Why do you say that, miss Tavan or something about
- 12:02Speaker 6: this man? How hard You haven't.
- 12:03Speaker 9: Told us he's no good search and he's no good
- 12:05Speaker 9: at all. That's what I've been afraid of. I've been
- 12:08Speaker 9: afraid of it right along.
- 12:09Speaker 5: Well, just how do you mean, ma'am? He's no good.
- 12:11Speaker 7: He's a tramp of bum. We'll get a job. He's
- 12:14Speaker 7: been living off my brother.
- 12:15Speaker 8: He isn't normal.
- 12:16Speaker 7: There's something wrong with him.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Well, how is it your brother put up with him?
- 12:19Speaker 9: I told you he and Ralph were friends in the navy.
- 12:21Speaker 9: He did a big favor for Ralph once. He's been
- 12:23Speaker 9: living off it ever since, taking his clothes, borrowing his car, money,
- 12:27Speaker 9: never paying it back.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Why do you think he killed your brother?
- 12:30Speaker 11: Miss?
- 12:30Speaker 8: I just know it, that's all he did it.
- 12:33Speaker 5: He ever fight with your brother? Would you have to know?
- 12:34Speaker 5: Did he ever threaten him?
- 12:36Speaker 9: They had a big fight one about two weeks ago.
- 12:38Speaker 9: I think Andy kept sponging until Ralph got good and
- 12:41Speaker 9: sick of it, told Andy to go out and get
- 12:44Speaker 9: a job. That's when the fight started.
- 12:46Speaker 5: You saw it, did you?
- 12:47Speaker 9: Ralph told me about it. Fist fight in the alley
- 12:50Speaker 9: back of the apartment. Ralph knocked Andy down, and he
- 12:53Speaker 9: said he'd never forget it. He'd pay Ralph back. A
- 12:56Speaker 9: couple of days after that, my brother said the two
- 12:58Speaker 9: of them made up everything all right. Ralph should have
- 13:03Speaker 9: known better. He should have known better.
- 13:06Speaker 6: Just a few more questions, Miss Taborn, Can you tell
- 13:08Speaker 6: us anything about Andy, Howard's background, where he's from, whose
- 13:11Speaker 6: friends are places he usually goes?
- 13:13Speaker 9: No, I didn't know much about him. It's from the South,
- 13:16Speaker 9: I think Alabama. Ralph's friends can tell you more about
- 13:20Speaker 9: him than I can.
- 13:22Speaker 5: Had you heard anything lately about Howard planning to move
- 13:24Speaker 5: out of his apartment?
- 13:25Speaker 7: Nothing?
- 13:27Speaker 8: When I heard that he didn't move when Ralph was missing,
- 13:29Speaker 8: I knew something was wrong. That's why I called you.
- 13:35Speaker 8: I only know him before, poor Ralph.
- 13:38Speaker 5: If I only knew, well, I'll try to take it easy, man.
- 13:40Speaker 5: We'll arrange for a car to drive you home, all right.
- 13:43Speaker 8: It's so hard to understand. Hard for anyone to kill
- 13:48Speaker 8: Ralph like that? Horrible? It was so good. It was
- 13:52Speaker 8: my brother.
- 13:53Speaker 7: Yes, What do you say to a man who kills
- 13:56Speaker 7: your brother?
- 13:57Speaker 8: How do you understand him? What do you tell? Well?
- 14:01Speaker 5: Why even try?
- 14:02Speaker 8: What?
- 14:03Speaker 5: Let the jury tell him?
- 14:08Speaker 4: Before we had the victim's sister, Edith Tabor, driven to
- 14:11Speaker 4: her home. We asked her about the television set in
- 14:13Speaker 4: her brother's apartment, but she was unable to explain its absence.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Burglary detail had already been notified about the case, and
- 14:19Speaker 4: the pawnshop detail alerted. An APB had been gotten out,
- 14:22Speaker 4: containing a complete description of the TV set along with
- 14:25Speaker 4: the serial numbers. A few minutes after we got back
- 14:28Speaker 4: from dinner that night, we had an answer on it.
- 14:30Speaker 4: A pawnshop operator on West Seventh Street called in with
- 14:33Speaker 4: the information that he'd taken in a television set with
- 14:35Speaker 4: identical description and serial numbers as that of Tabor's. Ed
- 14:39Speaker 4: and I drove out to the pawnshop and checked the
- 14:41Speaker 4: operator's buy book. The set had been pawned the day
- 14:44Speaker 4: after the murder. The serial numbers and description matched in
- 14:47Speaker 4: every detail. The description and signature of the man who
- 14:50Speaker 4: pawned it matched perfectly with that of Ralph Taber's friend
- 14:52Speaker 4: Andy Howard. The set was impounded, and just on a chance,
- 14:56Speaker 4: we had Dean Bergmann dusted for latent fingerprints.
- 14:59Speaker 5: Dean, Oh, hi Eddy, how are you making out anyway?
- 15:02Speaker 2: Not bad?
- 15:02Speaker 13: Have a look here, Yeah, I picked up four sets
- 15:05Speaker 13: of Prince off at all told he's here, the dead
- 15:07Speaker 13: man's he's here. They belonged to the paunch op operator.
- 15:11Speaker 13: He's born to his son helps him in the shop. Huh,
- 15:14Speaker 13: I guess this is the one you're looking for. Too
- 15:16Speaker 13: clean index Prince to classify him, checked him against Prince
- 15:19Speaker 13: from Andrew Howard's package.
- 15:20Speaker 5: You know they match.
- 15:25Speaker 4: When we checked in for work the following morning, we
- 15:27Speaker 4: got the coroner's report on Ralph Tabor. Cause of death
- 15:30Speaker 4: was listed as cerebral hemorrhage and multiple fractures of the
- 15:32Speaker 4: skull caused by blows from a heavy blunt object. The
- 15:35Speaker 4: other reports from the crime lab didn't give us much help.
- 15:39Speaker 5: The better part of.
- 15:39Speaker 4: The next three days, ED and I, along with Al
- 15:41Speaker 4: Shambra and Joe Lamonica, held detailed interviews with the known
- 15:45Speaker 4: friends and associates of the murder victim, Ralph Tabor and
- 15:48Speaker 4: the number one suspect, Andy Howard. The information we picked
- 15:51Speaker 4: up was incorporated in a supplementary All Points bulletin and
- 15:54Speaker 4: gotten out immediately. We found out that Andy Howard had
- 15:57Speaker 4: a sailor's uniform in his possession and though authorized, he
- 16:00Speaker 4: wore it frequently. It bore the insignia of a Quartermaster
- 16:04Speaker 4: first class on the sleeve. We also found out Howard
- 16:07Speaker 4: had identical tattoos on each forearm, the picture of an
- 16:10Speaker 4: unfrilled American flag with a name Betty D below it.
- 16:13Speaker 4: We had the city covered for the suspect. Four days passed,
- 16:17Speaker 4: no trace of him. Saturday, November twenty fourth, we got
- 16:19Speaker 4: an urgent call from homicide Commander Lieutenant mort Gear in
- 16:22Speaker 4: San Diego.
- 16:24Speaker 6: On the highway. Uhh when was that? May I see, hey, Joe,
- 16:29Speaker 6: you've got a pencil there.
- 16:30Speaker 5: Yeah, there you go.
- 16:31Speaker 6: Thanks, And I was pretty sure huh huh oh, yeah,
- 16:36Speaker 6: it seems to tie in.
- 16:37Speaker 11: All right, how's that? Well, I don't know for sure.
- 16:41Speaker 11: We'll check Captain Norman right now.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Let you know.
- 16:44Speaker 11: Yeah, thanks Mark, goodbye, good break.
- 16:47Speaker 5: What do you have to say?
- 16:48Speaker 6: One of their trafficmen down there felt about the name
- 16:50Speaker 6: of Jack Flad stuffed car on the highway going out
- 16:52Speaker 6: of town speeding. Yeah, that says a man, answers Andy
- 16:55Speaker 6: Howard's description perfectly, right down to the tattoo on the forearm.
- 16:59Speaker 6: No doubt about the car I was driving was Tabor's description.
- 17:01Speaker 6: License number even used Tabor's identification.
- 17:04Speaker 5: When do all this happened?
- 17:05Speaker 6: Day after the murder? Hell them, man, they didn't have
- 17:07Speaker 6: the information at the time.
- 17:09Speaker 5: It's a bumm break. Which way was Howard going? They
- 17:11Speaker 5: tell you? Yeah?
- 17:11Speaker 4: And of town?
- 17:12Speaker 5: I figure you're still there someplace? What mean? Finally, car
- 17:15Speaker 5: an hour ago abandoned.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Ten minutes after the phone call from San Diego. Captain
- 17:21Speaker 4: Norman checked back in at the office and Ed and
- 17:23Speaker 4: I met with him. We told him about the information
- 17:25Speaker 4: san Diego had phoned in, and he gave Ed and
- 17:27Speaker 4: I an immediate OK for the trip south. We went
- 17:30Speaker 4: down to the garage, picked up a car, and six
- 17:32Speaker 4: hours later we checked in with Sergeant Russ ormsby San
- 17:35Speaker 4: Diego Homicide.
- 17:36Speaker 14: What's this another fishing tripp? Or are we doing business
- 17:38Speaker 14: this time?
- 17:38Speaker 5: Great?
- 17:39Speaker 6: It's all business, Russ, Andy Howard thing walk here around.
- 17:42Speaker 14: No, I won't be back till later. I can brief
- 17:44Speaker 14: you on it though. McGuire and I have been working
- 17:45Speaker 14: it on this end.
- 17:46Speaker 5: Well, how about Tabor's car? You still got to stake down?
- 17:48Speaker 14: Yeah, no, nibble chip. What do you figure if nothing happens,
- 17:52Speaker 14: pull it in tomorrow, process it for Prince. Yeah, we've
- 17:55Speaker 14: had something warmer nuts since mort Get called it looks
- 17:57Speaker 14: pretty good. Yeah, what you got when I came up
- 17:59Speaker 14: with it a couple of hours ago. Field interrogation card
- 18:02Speaker 14: made out last night West end of town. Beat officer
- 18:05Speaker 14: by the name of Driscoll questioned a man and a
- 18:07Speaker 14: girl parked in a car out that way last night
- 18:10Speaker 14: there's a description.
- 18:11Speaker 2: On the man.
- 18:11Speaker 5: Thanks Roy, Yeah, Fitz Howard all the way in here.
- 18:17Speaker 5: Couldn't get much closer, huh.
- 18:18Speaker 14: They checked out the car they were and belongs to
- 18:20Speaker 14: the girl.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Yeah look here, and he's still using Tabor's identification.
- 18:24Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, where's it go from here? Russ? You
- 18:27Speaker 5: got this? Andy Howard spotted.
- 18:29Speaker 14: No beat man Driscoll. He didn't know the guy from Adam.
- 18:32Speaker 5: You know where's that Leavis?
- 18:33Speaker 14: The girl Howard was with, Driscoll knew her.
- 18:38Speaker 5: We contacted the beat officer Driscoll.
- 18:40Speaker 4: The girl who had been spotted sitting in a parked
- 18:42Speaker 4: car the night before with murder suspect Andy Howard was
- 18:45Speaker 4: identified as Helen McClung, a waitress in a downtown cocktail bar.
- 18:49Speaker 4: A stakeout was placed in her apartment and she was
- 18:51Speaker 4: brought in for interrogation.
- 18:52Speaker 15: He's not a good friend of mine. I don't know
- 18:54Speaker 15: where he lives, don't know what he does.
- 18:55Speaker 6: I had even knowing, Siry, You're out for a drive
- 18:57Speaker 6: with him like before.
- 18:58Speaker 5: Lat's that right?
- 18:59Speaker 8: Sure?
- 18:59Speaker 15: I don't deny that we went out for a ride.
- 19:01Speaker 16: That's all there is to it.
- 19:02Speaker 14: Be sure you don't know where this man lives, Helen,
- 19:03Speaker 14: Not exactly.
- 19:04Speaker 15: No, he's staying at a hotel downtown. I think we
- 19:07Speaker 15: went for a ride and I dropped him off the
- 19:08Speaker 15: bus line. That's all it was to it.
- 19:10Speaker 5: You expect see him again? You have any dates with
- 19:11Speaker 5: him the next couple of days?
- 19:13Speaker 7: No, tell you the truth.
- 19:14Speaker 16: I thought I had a date.
- 19:15Speaker 15: Didn't work out.
- 19:16Speaker 7: Nothing ever works out, but on this morning called it off.
- 19:19Speaker 16: Tell you why I gave some lame excuse. I found
- 19:22Speaker 16: out the real reason though?
- 19:23Speaker 14: What's that?
- 19:24Speaker 5: Do you mind telling us?
- 19:24Speaker 7: I don't mind.
- 19:25Speaker 15: He's got a date with my girlfriend instead, Claire Peterson.
- 19:29Speaker 15: Burn me up a little bit, I don't mind.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Where's your girlfriend live, Helen?
- 19:32Speaker 15: You mean Claire an on Rose Avenue fifteen hundred block.
- 19:34Speaker 15: I'm not sure though.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Is he going to pick her up there?
- 19:37Speaker 8: I guess?
- 19:37Speaker 5: So?
- 19:37Speaker 8: Who I?
- 19:37Speaker 5: When's the date? Fort? You know?
- 19:39Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 19:39Speaker 3: Nine, you are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your
- 19:54Speaker 3: police force in action.
- 20:02Speaker 4: Monday November twenty sixth ten am. After checking her name
- 20:05Speaker 4: through San Diego R and I, we finally located the
- 20:08Speaker 4: address of the girl, Claire Peterson, who was supposed to
- 20:10Speaker 4: have a date with our murders suspect Andy Howard that night.
- 20:13Speaker 4: She lived in a small apartment house in the southeast
- 20:16Speaker 4: end of town. The manager told us that she'd already
- 20:18Speaker 4: left for work. We ran it down.
- 20:20Speaker 5: The Peterson girl was employed.
- 20:21Speaker 4: As a cutter and a shirt factory down in the
- 20:23Speaker 4: industrial district.
- 20:24Speaker 5: We questioned her at her work. A tall, attractive.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Girl, blonde, blue eyes, a small scar in her chin.
- 20:30Speaker 4: She kept working while we talked to her.
- 20:33Speaker 16: Yeah, I have a date with Ralph tabored night. Something
- 20:36Speaker 16: the matter great.
- 20:36Speaker 5: Saw Miss Peterson the first place. His name isn't Ralph.
- 20:39Speaker 17: Table No, I'm sorry, you must be wrong, Officer. I
- 20:41Speaker 17: was out him just last Monday. I know it's his
- 20:44Speaker 17: names on everything. He has, his cars, wallet.
- 20:46Speaker 16: All his business papers. She must have made a mistake.
- 20:49Speaker 5: No, it's no mistake, man. We checked it out pretty thoroughly.
- 20:51Speaker 5: We'd like to talking about it if we could.
- 20:52Speaker 14: Please.
- 20:53Speaker 17: Well, there's not too much to tell. I just met
- 20:55Speaker 17: him Monday night. It was with my girlfriend, Helen, who
- 20:58Speaker 17: wanted to go out with me, so I made a date.
- 21:00Speaker 17: I don't think there's anything wrong.
- 21:01Speaker 5: He said he's to meet you at your apartment.
- 21:02Speaker 6: Miss Peterson, did you give any specific time when.
- 21:04Speaker 16: He'd be there eight or eight thirty. He said, hey,
- 21:07Speaker 16: what's wrong? You know there's something wrong with him?
- 21:10Speaker 5: Man, I know.
- 21:10Speaker 16: Don't you think we want him?
- 21:11Speaker 5: For questioning? Ma'am? You any idea where he lives?
- 21:14Speaker 17: No, No, I happened one of the hotels downtown. I
- 21:16Speaker 17: think Fifth Street or sixth Street. I wouldn't know for sure.
- 21:20Speaker 16: What do you want him? Can't you tell me?
- 21:22Speaker 8: Please?
- 21:23Speaker 6: We believe he's committed a murder, Miss Peterson, a matter
- 21:25Speaker 6: of fact, we're sure of it.
- 21:27Speaker 7: What do you want me to do?
- 21:28Speaker 1: He calls up.
- 21:28Speaker 6: Before your date tonight, don't do anything to discourage him.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Tell him to meet you.
- 21:32Speaker 6: If he wants to postpone the date, try and make
- 21:34Speaker 6: him come tonight.
- 21:34Speaker 5: You can't do that. Try and find out where he's staying.
- 21:36Speaker 5: Don't let him know we talked to you.
- 21:38Speaker 16: Well, all right, I can't try. You'll be there when
- 21:41Speaker 16: he comes to my apartment.
- 21:42Speaker 5: I mean, best man who will be there. He'll be
- 21:44Speaker 5: protected all the way. Well, what do you do, ma'am?
- 21:47Speaker 18: What do you do?
- 21:48Speaker 16: You say he's a murder, He must be desperate. What
- 21:51Speaker 16: do you do? How you arrest him?
- 21:53Speaker 5: This choice? Ma'am?
- 21:53Speaker 4: Anyway he wants it. As soon as we left the
- 21:59Speaker 4: plan with him, Peterson Girl worked. We called Sergeant Tony
- 22:01Speaker 4: McGuire at San Diego Homicide Detail and he made arrangements
- 22:04Speaker 4: for an immediate stakeout at the girl's apartment. At seven pm,
- 22:08Speaker 4: Ed and I, along with Russ Armsby and Tony McGuire,
- 22:11Speaker 4: drove out to supplement the men on steak out at
- 22:13Speaker 4: the girl's apartment eight o'clock nine nine thirty ten PM,
- 22:18Speaker 4: still no sign of the suspect. At midnight, our relief
- 22:21Speaker 4: team showed up and we headed back for the office.
- 22:24Speaker 4: When we got there, there was a bulletin from the
- 22:25Speaker 4: Highway Patrol reporting that earlier that night, a man partially
- 22:29Speaker 4: identified as Andy Howard had been seen heading north from
- 22:31Speaker 4: San Diego on US Highway one oh one toward Los Angeles.
- 22:35Speaker 5: We got Captain Lorman.
- 22:36Speaker 4: On a phone, briefed him on the latest developments, and
- 22:38Speaker 4: told him that photographs of the suspect had been distributed
- 22:40Speaker 4: to all officers. The next ten hours failed to turn
- 22:43Speaker 4: up anything new. San Diego officers continued to cover their end.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Eleven fifteen pm the next day, we drove back to
- 22:51Speaker 4: Los Angeles and reported in a homicide there was a
- 22:53Speaker 4: note in the book from Lormon asking us to check
- 22:55Speaker 4: in early the following morning.
- 22:56Speaker 5: So Ed and I signed out and went home to
- 22:58Speaker 5: get some sleep.
- 22:59Speaker 4: The next morning, one am.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Hello Friday talking, Sorry to wake you up, Friday. This
- 23:11Speaker 5: is Hawkins down the business office. Oh yeah, Hawkins, what
- 23:13Speaker 5: do you got?
- 23:14Speaker 6: Beat officer on.
- 23:15Speaker 17: In Wheelshair called in two or three minutes ago.
- 23:17Speaker 14: He figures he has your murder suspect for you, Andy Howard.
- 23:19Speaker 5: Bring him in now, Well, what about identification? He checked
- 23:22Speaker 5: that over.
- 23:22Speaker 11: Oh, no identification. He's wearing a sailor's you have.
- 23:25Speaker 5: For what about insignia?
- 23:26Speaker 14: His ratings first class.
- 23:32Speaker 4: After I hung up, I phoned Ed, got him out
- 23:34Speaker 4: of bed, and the two of us drove down to
- 23:35Speaker 4: the office where we picked up the suspect and took
- 23:37Speaker 4: him to the interrogation room. During the interrogation we found
- 23:40Speaker 4: a wallet concealed on his person. It contained a driver's license,
- 23:44Speaker 4: credit card, and half a dozen other means of identification,
- 23:47Speaker 4: All of them were made out to Ralph Tabor. After
- 23:49Speaker 4: an hour of questioning, he'd still admit nothing. He sat
- 23:51Speaker 4: hunched over in his chair, tearing an old envelope in
- 23:54Speaker 4: the small pieces and dropping them on the floor in
- 23:56Speaker 4: front of him.
- 24:00Speaker 19: I'll make the tenth time I told you I don't
- 24:02Speaker 19: know what happened to Ralph. I didn't take his car
- 24:04Speaker 19: or his television set. I didn't leave the city. I
- 24:06Speaker 19: wasn't in San Diego last week. Now, if you don't
- 24:09Speaker 19: believe me, you'll prove I'm lying.
- 24:11Speaker 5: We didn't put in on them. Guess Andy, we'll prove it.
- 24:13Speaker 11: Do you mind telling me how we.
- 24:15Speaker 5: Got three people on their way in here right now?
- 24:17Speaker 4: Ralph Tabor's sister is Landlady, a man with a name
- 24:19Speaker 4: of Sims, pawn shop dealer.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Mean anything to you?
- 24:23Speaker 6: My word against there three to one, mister, I got
- 24:26Speaker 6: the odds in their favoring. Look, why don't we straighten
- 24:28Speaker 6: this out once and for all. You think I killed
- 24:30Speaker 6: my friend Ralph? Why explain it to me? Why should
- 24:32Speaker 6: I kill him?
- 24:33Speaker 4: Look, I wouldn't know, Andy. Maybe you'd like to tell us.
- 24:36Speaker 4: His sister says he was pretty good to you, She
- 24:38Speaker 4: was good to me. I guess she didn't tell you
- 24:41Speaker 4: what I did for him overseas when we were in
- 24:43Speaker 4: the Navy together.
- 24:44Speaker 5: No, she didn't tell us.
- 24:46Speaker 19: She wouldn't. Stupid women. I haven't found one of them
- 24:48Speaker 19: worth anything. Frustrated she needs a husband, that's her trouble.
- 24:52Speaker 4: She claims her brother was paying the bills for you, Andy,
- 24:55Speaker 4: He gave you clothes, money, his car.
- 24:57Speaker 5: She says, you were living off them.
- 24:59Speaker 19: I say, and that's all the thanks I get. After
- 25:02Speaker 19: all I did for Ralph. I brought a few dollars. Yeah,
- 25:05Speaker 19: that's all. Kept throwing it up to me, him and
- 25:08Speaker 19: his sister. After all I did for him.
- 25:10Speaker 5: What are you trying to say? Andy? Could have been
- 25:12Speaker 5: different Ralph than me?
- 25:15Speaker 19: What do you want me to say?
- 25:18Speaker 5: Did you kill him? Did you kill him?
- 25:20Speaker 11: Andy?
- 25:21Speaker 19: You can't explain it that way. It's not as simple
- 25:23Speaker 19: as that. Didn't No, it's all mixed up together. It's complicated,
- 25:28Speaker 19: not simple at all. I mean with your best friend, especially,
- 25:33Speaker 19: it's more of a mistake. I mean, Marley, I didn't
- 25:36Speaker 19: mean to kill him.
- 25:37Speaker 5: I just did. It's a mistake, terrible mistake.
- 25:45Speaker 12: You want to give us a statement? Hard Smaga, pril
- 25:47Speaker 12: take it down? Oh yeah, all right, in a minute.
- 25:52Speaker 12: I just want to make sure you understand I mean
- 25:54Speaker 12: about Ralph and all I did for him. Yeah, no gratitude,
- 26:00Speaker 12: gratitude at all.
- 26:02Speaker 5: You blame me.
- 26:02Speaker 11: I mean after all I did for him.
- 26:04Speaker 4: You blame me, Well, you should have remembered Andy about gratitude. Yeah,
- 26:08Speaker 4: doesn't mean much when you have to ask for it.
- 26:17Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:21Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:23Speaker 3: On February fourth, trial was held in Superior Court Department
- 26:26Speaker 3: eighty nine, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:29Speaker 3: In a moment the results of that trial, Andrew Thomas
- 26:40Speaker 3: Howard was tried and convicted of murder in the second degree.
- 26:43Speaker 3: He is now serving his term in the State Penitentiary
- 26:45Speaker 3: San Quentin, California. Second degree murder is punishable by imprisonment
- 26:49Speaker 3: from five years to life.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, right now, inflation is America's number one
- 26:56Speaker 2: menace on the home front. It's the one enemy that
- 26:59Speaker 2: can lick America. We can help prevent this by working harder,
- 27:03Speaker 2: working better. The fight against inflation will succeed only if
- 27:07Speaker 2: all of us get behind it.
- 27:18Speaker 3: You have just heard Dragnet a series of authentic cases
- 27:21Speaker 3: from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 27:25Speaker 3: Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Heard tonight were Barney Phillips, Joyce McCluskey and Virginia Gregg.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Script by Jim Moser, music by Walter Schumann, hell Given speaking.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Next, it's David Harding and Pounder Spy on NBC.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, a solid missing person's case. This is
- 27:59Speaker 1: why where the title raises questions to me, because like
- 28:05Speaker 1: the Big LIGHTE Scrap, this feels like a title that's
- 28:10Speaker 1: based on some production circumstances and the idea that you
- 28:14Speaker 1: would almost not end up recordings Ragnet, particularly when they
- 28:19Speaker 1: were doing so much of the series by transcription, seems
- 28:24Speaker 1: very odd. I mean, in nineteen fifty two, it was
- 28:29Speaker 1: one of the network's premiere programs. It was a show
- 28:33Speaker 1: that had a sponsor, so them missing an episode would
- 28:38Speaker 1: be kind of a big deal. So I don't know
- 28:41Speaker 1: why they almost missed it, or if somebody was, I
- 28:44Speaker 1: don't know, maybe just a little bit anxious and exaggerating
- 28:48Speaker 1: and picking that title. It is also one of those
- 28:51Speaker 1: titles that can make it challenging when it comes to
- 28:56Speaker 1: matching radio programs to the TV episodes they were adapted from.
- 29:02Speaker 1: There were a handful of TV episodes from the seventh
- 29:08Speaker 1: season of Dragnet that started to circulate online, and I
- 29:13Speaker 1: watched one, and I thought that episode was an original
- 29:19Speaker 1: to TV program, but it wasn't. It was this story
- 29:24Speaker 1: adapted to television. Now, I haven't watched it in a while,
- 29:29Speaker 1: and I didn't know if it would be particularly useful
- 29:34Speaker 1: to go through it like seen by Seeing to see
- 29:39Speaker 1: where it differs. But I think it actually tracked pretty close.
- 29:43Speaker 1: It was during the point that Frank Smith was Friday's
- 29:49Speaker 1: partner and they were both actually up for promotion, which
- 29:53Speaker 1: they'd end up getting, and so there's a little bit
- 29:56Speaker 1: of that in the plot, but other than that, it's
- 29:59Speaker 1: very much the same story for me. It was noteworthy
- 30:04Speaker 1: because the actor who played the San Diego police officer
- 30:11Speaker 1: was William Boyett, and if you know your Jack Web television,
- 30:16Speaker 1: he played Sergeant MacDonald on Adam twelve, so that was
- 30:21Speaker 1: a bit of a treat. Now, the episode was not
- 30:24Speaker 1: titled The Big Almost No Show. On YouTube, you can
- 30:29Speaker 1: find it as The Big Bit. Well, now it's time
- 30:35Speaker 1: to thank our Patreon supporter of the day. Thank you
