Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The ComCom says it won't investigate sky high airport costs
- 0:04Speaker 1: despite pressure from airlines. Instead, it'll tighten rules next year
- 0:07Speaker 1: to better monitor big airport projects in New Zealand, as
- 0:10Speaker 1: you know, has publicly had beef about this. They say
- 0:13Speaker 1: fees have more than doubled in two years in Auckland,
- 0:15Speaker 1: could cost them half a billion bucks by twenty thirty two.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Billy Moore is New Zealand Airport's Association Chief executive. Billy
- 0:21Speaker 1: good morning, good morning. So you're not you're not off
- 0:25Speaker 1: scot free here the airports. So there is going to
- 0:27Speaker 1: be a bit more monitoring, a couple of changes made,
- 0:30Speaker 1: but no investigation.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. It's not a it's a constructive outcome
- 0:35Speaker 2: to work on the information disclosure of regime. But you
- 0:38Speaker 2: know it is all about balance in the system here
- 0:43Speaker 2: in New Zealand has made that claim as you have said.
- 0:46Speaker 2: But while they say they might pay half a billion
- 0:49Speaker 2: dollars in fees, look at New Zealand, Auckland is their
- 0:53Speaker 2: biggest hubs. Are also are protected to make from that
- 0:56Speaker 2: six point five billion dollars by twenty thirty two. So
- 1:00Speaker 2: while it might be one of their biggest costs that
- 1:02Speaker 2: they're managing. It's also one of the places where they
- 1:05Speaker 2: make the most money.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Why are you charging so much? Is it just because
- 1:08Speaker 1: you're doing the upgrades and once that's done things we
- 1:10Speaker 1: back to normal or what.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Auckland Airport's fees are about where most international airport fees sits.
- 1:17Speaker 2: They're not particularly high. They've been up maybe a dollar
- 1:21Speaker 2: fifty a year over the past few years, and some
- 1:25Speaker 2: of it is about stabilizing fees after them being extremely
- 1:31Speaker 2: low for about at least a decade.
- 1:33Speaker 1: That's right, Why would they low for a decade?
- 1:38Speaker 2: Well, it's taken a long time for Aucland Airport to
- 1:41Speaker 2: get its infrastructure build progressing, and part of the reasons
- 1:45Speaker 2: for that has been resistance from the airlines over that time,
- 1:48Speaker 2: trying to delay the build and reduce it, which means
- 1:50Speaker 2: that the costs now will be a little bit steeper
- 1:54Speaker 2: than they otherwise would have been a progress I've been
- 1:56Speaker 2: made earlier.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Appreciate your time, Billy Billy Moore, New Zealand Reports are
