- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to College Football Addiction. Notre Dame
- 0:03Speaker 1: and Stanford, a rivalry that's been fun for a long time.
- 0:06Speaker 1: I don't know how fun it'll be this.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Week, but we will see.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We are presented by PrizePix, where all new users who
- 0:12Speaker 1: play a $ 5 lineup using code HMA and win get.
- 0:15Speaker 2: $ 150 in lineups instantly. Tom Hanif in the power, too.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Make sure you are subscribed so you can get more
- 0:20Speaker 1: of Tom's content here live twice a week and then
- 0:23Speaker 1: in the clips that we do post.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Tom, Notre Dame and Stanford.
- 0:27Speaker 1: We talked about the Notre Dame UNC game on the
- 0:29Speaker 1: live show this week, and it wasn't the most overwhelming win,
- 0:33Speaker 1: but you and Cole were pretty impressed with Notre Dame
- 0:36Speaker 1: regardless in, in the way that they went out and
- 0:38Speaker 1: got the win. Some things had gone UNC's way without
- 0:41Speaker 1: a doubt. The weather was bad, but still pretty impressed
- 0:44Speaker 1: with where Notre Dame is right now. We've talked about
- 0:45Speaker 1: complete teams. How close is Notre Dame to being one
- 0:48Speaker 1: of the five ish most complete teams in the country?
- 0:52Speaker 1: Are you, are they solidly in there for you?
- 0:54Speaker 3: I think they're solidly in there. And I, a thousand
- 0:57Speaker 3: percent understand the people that are looking at Notre Dame's
- 1:00Speaker 3: strength of schedule and who they face so far and
- 1:03Speaker 3: saying like, Hey, you know, have they really faced some
- 1:05Speaker 3: elite competition? And the answer is no. And unfortunately Stanford
- 1:09Speaker 3: is not going to present elite competition in this game,
- 1:12Speaker 3: but for Notre Dame, you want to see them continue
- 1:15Speaker 3: to do the things that they've been successful with so
- 1:17Speaker 3: far this season. You're the number three undefeated team at
- 1:20Speaker 3: home facing Stanford, who has struggled so far this year.
- 1:24Speaker 3: against some of the better teams in the ACC. Three
- 1:27Speaker 3: teams that you, myself, and Cole have said on The
- 1:29Speaker 3: Power 2 we think could wind up in Charlotte for
- 1:31Speaker 3: the ACC title. Their losses are to Miami, Duke, and
- 1:35Speaker 3: Wake Forest. All three of those teams we think will
- 1:37Speaker 3: be in the mix potentially. So no shame in those losses,
- 1:40Speaker 3: but they were ugly losses. They were losses by a
- 1:43Speaker 3: substantial gap. So I struggle to identify a way that
- 1:47Speaker 3: Stanford would be able to pull off the upset against
- 1:50Speaker 3: Notre Dame. The spread right now is 37.5 in favor
- 1:55Speaker 3: of the Fighting Irish with an over-under of 53.5. I
- 2:00Speaker 3: look at it this way. Davis Warren has had a
- 2:04Speaker 3: few instances this season where he's gone off in the
- 2:06Speaker 3: passing game. I just don't see Notre Dame allowing him
- 2:09Speaker 3: those opportunities. I think they're going to be able to
- 2:11Speaker 3: get to him. I think they're going to be able
- 2:13Speaker 3: to speed up his process. And yes, there could be
- 2:16Speaker 3: some explosives that occur here and there that maybe lead
- 2:19Speaker 3: to a score for Stanford, but nothing necessarily sustainable. Offensively
- 2:23Speaker 3: for Notre Dame, CJ Carr has been as advertised. Is
- 2:27Speaker 3: he putting up the otherworldly statistics week in and week
- 2:31Speaker 3: out that really make you say, oh, this guy should
- 2:33Speaker 3: be number one in terms of Heisman voting, something like that?
- 2:36Speaker 3: Not necessarily, but he was super efficient and consistent this
- 2:40Speaker 3: past weekend against UNC. Right now, Notre Dame is tied
- 2:44Speaker 3: for 54th in the country in passing yards per game
- 2:46Speaker 3: and 65th in the country in rushing yards per game.
- 2:49Speaker 3: 266 and 161, respectively. Now, you might look at those
- 2:53Speaker 3: and be like, ah, those aren't really elite numbers, and
- 2:55Speaker 3: you would like them to be doing better, I guess,
- 2:57Speaker 3: against lesser competition. But there's balance there. They can kill
- 3:01Speaker 3: you in so many different ways. Notre Dame has enough
- 3:04Speaker 3: playmakers in terms of pass catchers that you can't just
- 3:07Speaker 3: focus on one guy, nor are they average enough to
- 3:10Speaker 3: the point that you can blanket cover them. There are
- 3:12Speaker 3: enough options in the passing game for C.J. Carr to
- 3:15Speaker 3: work through his progressions and just work to.
- 3:18Speaker 2: The open man.
- 3:19Speaker 3: It's not like you have to work to an alpha
- 3:21Speaker 3: wide receiver that you have to feed a la Jeremiah Smith.
- 3:24Speaker 3: He's got options everywhere he looks. And the encouraging thing
- 3:27Speaker 3: that we have talked about on The Power 2 is
- 3:29Speaker 3: that week over week, the Notre Dame rushing attack gets better.
- 3:34Speaker 3: They understand what their identity is. They have multiple tailbacks
- 3:37Speaker 3: in that room that can hurt you. But it's not
- 3:40Speaker 3: like the Judkins-Henderson days where they had some really explosive
- 3:44Speaker 3: guys back there. It's relying on the skill of that
- 3:47Speaker 3: offensive line to take advantage and salt away some of
- 3:49Speaker 3: these games. Yeah, I just expect this one to be
- 3:52Speaker 3: a little bit ugly if you're a Stanford Cardinal fan.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Notre Dame, you talked about CJ Carr. I think his
- 3:57Speaker 1: talent is off the charts, but you are right. I
- 4:01Speaker 1: kind of expected them to just go crazy this year.
- 4:04Speaker 1: And now they've played, I don't say down, but they've
- 4:06Speaker 1: played closer in a few games than I think we
- 4:08Speaker 1: may be expected. UNC, Wisconsin to open the year up.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Their running game has certainly impacted them. some of his
- 4:16Speaker 1: numbers as well. And I do, when I look at
- 4:20Speaker 1: CJ Carr, you're right, man, the perfect word is efficient
- 4:24Speaker 1: because he's not pulling the, I mean, Mince has been
- 4:26Speaker 1: incredibly efficient too, but I think those guys got linked
- 4:29Speaker 1: in Heisman conversations early in the year because we all
- 4:31Speaker 1: kind of thought, well, they're going to win a lot
- 4:32Speaker 1: of games, which is going to help both of their
- 4:34Speaker 1: stock tremendously for the Heisman. And then one of them
- 4:37Speaker 1: is going to beat the other one, one way or
- 4:38Speaker 1: the other, like when they play each other in South Bend,
- 4:41Speaker 1: and that'll give one of them a leg up in
- 4:42Speaker 1: the Heisman. And you're talking about the winner of that game,
- 4:45Speaker 1: most likely sitting at 12 and Oh, when the regular
- 4:47Speaker 1: season is done.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:49Speaker 1: And so a 12 and Oh quarterback is always going
- 4:51Speaker 1: to be considered for New York, whether he goes or not,
- 4:53Speaker 1: we'll see, but always going to be considered there. And
- 4:56Speaker 1: so that is where I think about, okay, has he,
- 5:00Speaker 1: has he done enough to not be considered at all?
- 5:03Speaker 1: Or if things pick up a little bit and his
- 5:05Speaker 1: numbers pick up, you know, then he maybe could be
- 5:08Speaker 1: considered with a big win against Miami, which is kind
- 5:09Speaker 1: of a Heisman moment. It, it ebbs and flows, right?
- 5:12Speaker 1: You have guys, I mean, Jaden ball.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Was in it last week. He's, not into this week.
- 5:15Speaker 1: So certainly can move around quite a bit, but I
- 5:18Speaker 1: do think the consistency that car has played with has
- 5:21Speaker 1: been really, really impressive this year. He's a good quarterback
- 5:24Speaker 1: and he just doesn't have the eye popping stats of
- 5:28Speaker 1: blowing teams out like Miami's done or throw into a
- 5:31Speaker 1: Jeremiah Smith, like saying is done or, you know, doing
- 5:34Speaker 1: what Jeremiah is doing himself or, just whomever Austin Simmons
- 5:37Speaker 1: is up there too. So just more, a couple more
- 5:40Speaker 1: thoughts on, uh, on CJ car and just Notre Dame's up.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Is it a Notre Dame approach thing?
- 5:45Speaker 1: Is it that they just haven't played as well as
- 5:46Speaker 1: maybe we thought from the beginning of the year as
- 5:48Speaker 1: a team?
- 5:49Speaker 2: Is it both those things?
- 5:50Speaker 1: Just before we go on, I will give some love
- 5:52Speaker 1: to our new top 25 poll.
- 5:55Speaker 2: A lot of you are like me and you hate
- 5:56Speaker 2: the AP poll. So I created a better.
- 5:59Speaker 1: One that you can log in right now and for
- 6:02Speaker 1: free go create your own top 25 poll.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I'm setting up reminders.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I'm working on aggregating national college football analysts that we
- 6:11Speaker 1: all know and love and respect, or maybe even hate
- 6:13Speaker 1: just to get theirs in there as well. It's super slick.
- 6:17Speaker 1: The user interface is really, really easy to use. You
- 6:20Speaker 1: log in one time with your Google account and you
- 6:22Speaker 1: are all set. I'm not going to spam your email.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I'm not trying to sell you anything. There's no ads
- 6:27Speaker 1: on here. If somebody would like to put an ad
- 6:29Speaker 1: on there, please let me know. But it's just a
- 6:31Speaker 1: place where we can go collectively as fans vote on
- 6:36Speaker 1: the poll, the top 25 in college football. We're going
- 6:38Speaker 1: to work on a college football playoff one. Once we
- 6:39Speaker 1: get closer to November, but go check this out. It's
- 6:42Speaker 1: CFA top 25.com link is in the description.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I'll pin the comment, go check it out right now.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Well, here's the sneaky truth. I think about Notre Dame
- 6:53Speaker 3: is that this is a run first team. They're running
- 6:55Speaker 3: the ball about 60% of the time. So they're not
- 6:58Speaker 3: putting it all on CJ car. He's yet to crack
- 7:00Speaker 3: 300 yards passing this game. this season, excuse me, and
- 7:04Speaker 3: I know people can say, oh, I want to see
- 7:05Speaker 3: the video game numbers for the elite quarterback. Well, he's
- 7:08Speaker 3: going to do that when it comes to touchdowns and
- 7:11Speaker 3: completion percentage. He has three games of three passing touchdowns
- 7:14Speaker 3: or more so far this season, and he's got 71%
- 7:17Speaker 3: completion percentage. If you're a head coach and an offensive coordinator,
- 7:21Speaker 3: you're like, sounds good. Sign me up for that every
- 7:24Speaker 3: single week. That's fantastic. So C.J. Carr's not been put
- 7:28Speaker 3: in a position where he has to put Notre Dame
- 7:30Speaker 3: on his back and win it through the air. That
- 7:33Speaker 3: remains to be seen. For him to be in Heisman contention,
- 7:36Speaker 3: the quote-unquote Heisman moments, he's going to have to deal
- 7:39Speaker 3: with BYU and Provo. He's going to have to deal
- 7:42Speaker 3: with Miami later on this season. Those are the games
- 7:45Speaker 3: where we're really going to learn who is CJ Carr
- 7:48Speaker 3: when the chips are down and Notre Dame is potentially
- 7:51Speaker 3: struggling to run the football effectively. But right now, you're
- 7:55Speaker 3: confident lining up Williams, James Jr., and Walton and getting
- 7:59Speaker 3: a good amount on the ground. As a team, you're
- 8:01Speaker 3: averaging 4.5 yards per carry. You've got to be ecstatic
- 8:05Speaker 3: about what you're doing as a running team game. I mean,
- 8:08Speaker 3: is it blowing people away? Is it 300, 400 yards
- 8:11Speaker 3: per game? No, but it's effective and it's efficient. You're
- 8:15Speaker 3: able to hurt the defense in multiple ways, and it
- 8:18Speaker 3: makes it very difficult to stop. So I think if
- 8:20Speaker 3: you're Marcus Freeman and company, you're real happy with what
- 8:23Speaker 3: you got, and it's just working on this week over week.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Talk about working on this week over week. What do
- 8:29Speaker 2: you want to see?
- 8:30Speaker 1: Notre Dame emphasize in a, in a game where they're
- 8:33Speaker 1: a massive favorite, but with a trip to Provo on
- 8:37Speaker 1: the horizon, just next week, a night game on ABC
- 8:42Speaker 1: that got announced today here on Monday afternoon, as we
- 8:45Speaker 1: record this, is there, are there specific things you want
- 8:47Speaker 1: to see them work on that you would like to
- 8:49Speaker 1: see a little bit cleaner in this game where you
- 8:52Speaker 1: probably have an opportunity to work on it against an
- 8:55Speaker 1: inferior opponent?
- 8:57Speaker 3: I think you want to see, like I mentioned, maybe
- 8:59Speaker 3: the running game be a little bit more explosive than
- 9:02Speaker 3: they've been thus far. If you're Notre Dame, you want
- 9:05Speaker 3: to have a little bit more separation from your opponent
- 9:08Speaker 3: than you did, for instance, against UNC, where that was
- 9:11Speaker 3: 21-14 at half. UNC was able to make that 21-20
- 9:15Speaker 3: in the third quarter, and then they got a late
- 9:16Speaker 3: touchdown when they were down 15. you know, 37 to
- 9:19Speaker 3: 20 to make it 37, 26. So I think you'd
- 9:21Speaker 3: like to see that gap be a little bit more,
- 9:23Speaker 3: maybe a little faster start offensively, but I still think
- 9:27Speaker 3: the defense is really what you're looking at and saying, Hey,
- 9:29Speaker 3: if we're going to be going to BYU, we're going
- 9:32Speaker 3: to have to play the proverbial four quarters of football.
- 9:36Speaker 3: And we can't give them any opportunities to come back
- 9:38Speaker 3: at home with a team that likes to run the football.
- 9:41Speaker 3: You've got to be able to get the early lead
- 9:43Speaker 3: against a team like that. You've got to be able
- 9:44Speaker 3: to play defense consistently throughout the game. And I'd say
- 9:47Speaker 3: the same thing when they play Miami. We've seen Miami's firepower, granted,
- 9:51Speaker 3: against some lesser competition. They're going to be able to
- 9:54Speaker 3: put points on the board. But does Notre Dame have
- 9:56Speaker 3: the ability offensively to put one, two, maybe three scores?
- 10:00Speaker 3: on the board early in the game and make the
- 10:03Speaker 3: other team play from behind? And then defensively, can you
- 10:06Speaker 3: prevent those lapses and prevent the other team from coming
- 10:09Speaker 3: back in what would be considered garbage time and making
- 10:12Speaker 3: something competitive? That's what you've got to worry about with
- 10:14Speaker 3: your two biggest opponents later on this season. So you're
- 10:17Speaker 3: just preparing yourself for that. And then you're preparing yourself
- 10:20Speaker 3: mentally and physically for the heavyweight slugfest that you could
- 10:24Speaker 3: deal with in the college football playoff because that's what
- 10:26Speaker 3: this season is all about for Notre Dame. It's the
- 10:29Speaker 3: vindication tour.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Nearly a 40-point spread. Is this one they cover if
- 10:33Speaker 2: they want to? Yeah, yeah.
- 10:36Speaker 3: I am going to take the under because Notre Dame
- 10:38Speaker 3: is not trying to put points on the board just
- 10:42Speaker 3: to run up the score by any means. They're playing
- 10:44Speaker 3: within the offense. They're playing effective football offensively. great in
- 10:48Speaker 3: all three phases, but I don't expect them to try
- 10:52Speaker 3: and hang 60 on Stanford for any reason. I think
- 10:55Speaker 3: this is a game where they could wind up leaving,
- 10:58Speaker 3: it's 42 to 10, something like that, or even in
- 11:01Speaker 3: the 30s, because they don't need a ton to beat Stanford.
- 11:06Speaker 3: I think Stanford, if they get lucky, they get a
- 11:08Speaker 3: couple of instances where if there's a lapse and a
- 11:11Speaker 3: turnover or something like that, can you turn that into
- 11:14Speaker 3: a fumble return for a touchdown or a pick six.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Can you get a special team score? Can Davis Warren
- 11:18Speaker 3: come up with an explosive? Somebody slips a tackle. Like
- 11:21Speaker 3: you're going to need some, you know, no pun intended,
- 11:23Speaker 3: some luck against the Irish. If you're Stanford, meanwhile, Notre Dame,
- 11:27Speaker 3: take care of business. That's all this is. That's all
- 11:29Speaker 3: this is about. This is a maintenance game.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Cannot wait until we get past this game for Notre Dame.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I'm not wishing the college football weeks away, but I
- 11:36Speaker 1: can't wait till we get past this game and see
- 11:37Speaker 1: Notre Dame BYU next week. Cause That's where I think
- 11:39Speaker 1: we get a lot more fun.
- 11:40Speaker 2: So Tom Haniff in the power too.
- 11:42Speaker 1: We appreciate you for your time and hanging out again,
