- 0:01Speaker 1: The Malaysian Grand Prix put on a thrilling spectacle and
- 0:04Speaker 1: over three unforgettable laps, two rivals traded the lead. Are
- 0:08Speaker 1: staggering eleven times pushing led you caddies to the absolute edge.
- 0:13Speaker 1: With the title fight going down to the final round,
- 0:15Speaker 1: who will come out on top and become this is champion.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I'm your host, Rinita Vanmilan, and of course we have
- 0:22Speaker 1: Fox Sports Moto GP guru mister Matt Clayton. Matt Malaysia
- 0:28Speaker 1: was crazy and I feel like putting the whole title
- 0:31Speaker 1: fight to the side for a second. We have to
- 0:33Speaker 1: start this pod being the Aussie Moto GP podcast about
- 0:37Speaker 1: Jack Miller's miraculous escape after that first lap collision which
- 0:41Speaker 1: led to a red flag. I still can't believe he
- 0:45Speaker 1: walked away from that one.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Unbelievable ronetta really and there's something about that sequence of corners.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I mean, let's face it, Sepang was designed to be
- 0:54Speaker 2: a car track. It was designed for Formula one. It's
- 0:56Speaker 2: obviously Formula one's moved on from there since and it's
- 0:59Speaker 2: now become a Motor GP staple with testing and what
- 1:01Speaker 2: have you. But that sequence of corters at the start
- 1:04Speaker 2: of that lap in a pack battle is the absolute
- 1:06Speaker 2: just about the worst on the calendar, quite frankly. And
- 1:10Speaker 2: one of the unfortunate things when you work in motorsport
- 1:13Speaker 2: for a very long time, which I have, is that
- 1:15Speaker 2: you occasionally have to write about fatalities. And I've done
- 1:19Speaker 2: this numerous times with bikes and cars, and whenever anyone
- 1:22Speaker 2: falls off at Malaysia, it's hard not to sort of
- 1:24Speaker 2: just instantly get a flashback to Marcosimonicelli and having been
- 1:29Speaker 2: there that day having to deal with that, and so
- 1:31Speaker 2: obviously it wasn't as bad as that in terms of
- 1:34Speaker 2: the accident on Sunday, But when you see a bunch
- 1:36Speaker 2: of riders going down in the middle of the pack
- 1:38Speaker 2: is one thing. And then when you see one of
- 1:40Speaker 2: those riders is the writer that most of our audience
- 1:44Speaker 2: engages with the most, with Jack Miller, And then when
- 1:46Speaker 2: you see him not moving and the medical car out
- 1:49Speaker 2: there for a significant period, you start to become really
- 1:51Speaker 2: really worried. I know that Jack always has family at
- 1:53Speaker 2: this race too, so look absolutely miraculous that he got
- 1:58Speaker 2: away with it. The vision, I know about you, but
- 2:00Speaker 2: the vision of him walking back under his own steam
- 2:02Speaker 2: to the pit box before the restarted race even happened,
- 2:06Speaker 2: was probably the most startled I was for the entire weekend.
- 2:09Speaker 2: I could not believe given where we saw him ten
- 2:12Speaker 2: minutes before that. He was just wandering back to the
- 2:15Speaker 2: pit box with his wife Ruby and his assistant Thomas,
- 2:17Speaker 2: just to go wash the race on a TV that
- 2:20Speaker 2: he couldn't be in, and he'd been laying on the
- 2:22Speaker 2: ground surrounded by medics ten to fifteen minutes prior. That
- 2:25Speaker 2: was incredible. I could not believe that that was happening,
- 2:28Speaker 2: But you mentioned it, how lucky was he? And we
- 2:32Speaker 2: were swapping messages at the time when everyone commented on
- 2:36Speaker 2: Jack's head hitting the back of Fabio's Yamaha, I had
- 2:39Speaker 2: spotted really quickly in the background that I saw Juan
- 2:43Speaker 2: Meir's bike sort of jump in the background, and I
- 2:46Speaker 2: roughly knew where Jack was. I was on the track,
- 2:48Speaker 2: and I thought, he's either run over Jack's head or
- 2:50Speaker 2: he's run over Jack's legs. And if you're going to
- 2:53Speaker 2: pick one or the other, legs better, not good, but
- 2:56Speaker 2: legs better. And I said to you at the time,
- 2:58Speaker 2: said I think MEA's run over his legs, because he
- 3:00Speaker 2: was almost at walking pace at that time, but he
- 3:03Speaker 2: came through the corner and there's just a pair of
- 3:05Speaker 2: legs in the way and there's nowhere to go, and
- 3:07Speaker 2: he effectively had to run over Jack's legs to not
- 3:09Speaker 2: fall off himself. And it was unbelievable how lucky Jack was.
- 3:14Speaker 2: And I think both Fabio and Joanmir went to visit
- 3:18Speaker 2: Jack immediately after the actual restarted race, and we're pretty
- 3:21Speaker 2: stunned that he was okay with Joan Miir like Jack
- 3:24Speaker 2: was cracking jokes. It's a couple of bruises to be fine,
- 3:26Speaker 2: and Joanmir is like typical Jack, Odie, he would do this,
- 3:29Speaker 2: But we dodged a ball at there, didn't.
- 3:31Speaker 1: We We dodgably even you just bringing it up like
- 3:35Speaker 1: sitting on that sofar like you said, Marcus sim and Shellie,
- 3:38Speaker 1: this is all these thoughts that we're thinking about, and
- 3:40Speaker 1: it almost brings the year, the season, what these writers
- 3:44Speaker 1: are doing back down to reality and the fact that
- 3:47Speaker 1: these writers are putting themselves on the line each and
- 3:49Speaker 1: every weekend purely for our entertainment, and it is their job. Yeah,
- 3:54Speaker 1: but when you see an accident like that, and you
- 3:56Speaker 1: see Jack laying there, and I'm so thankful that the
- 4:01Speaker 1: broadcast didn't show the crash multiple times like they have
- 4:04Speaker 1: done in the past. I felt like that was a
- 4:06Speaker 1: really positive outcome from it, because at the time, we,
- 4:08Speaker 1: like you said, we didn't know that Jack was okay.
- 4:10Speaker 1: You see the medics around, We saw the overhead helicopter shot.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I think they played the crash once and that was it,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and I thought, brilliant. If something has happened here, they're
- 4:19Speaker 1: doing the right thing about it. But then, like you said,
- 4:21Speaker 1: when we saw Jack up and walking when the warm
- 4:23Speaker 1: up lap was on, Oh that sireh, relief that I did.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Oh that was intense.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, massive too. And you know, obviously from a
- 4:31Speaker 2: journalistic perspective, and just because I've been around it for
- 4:34Speaker 2: a while, I just naturally know Jack and the family
- 4:37Speaker 2: better than any of the other writers on the Grid.
- 4:38Speaker 2: It's just because we've got a shared passport and because
- 4:41Speaker 2: I've been around for long enough, so there's a personal
- 4:43Speaker 2: you know, as much as you're being a professional in
- 4:44Speaker 2: a situation like that, there's a personal connection here too,
- 4:47Speaker 2: because I know how Sonya, Jack's mum would have reacted
- 4:51Speaker 2: to that, because she struggles to watch the races at
- 4:53Speaker 2: the best of times, and so you know, I immediately
- 4:55Speaker 2: got on the phone when it was appropriate to check
- 4:57Speaker 2: in with her, And there's all those aspects. But the
- 5:00Speaker 2: worst bit is that sort of between period where you've
- 5:03Speaker 2: seen the accident and you don't have a confirmation like
- 5:07Speaker 2: he has a broken leg, he is injured, he is
- 5:09Speaker 2: not injured. It is that middle period of not knowing.
- 5:13Speaker 2: That's the absolute worst part of all of this, because
- 5:15Speaker 2: you're not thinking. You're thinking of not for yourself, for
- 5:18Speaker 2: your professional means, but you're thinking of what's his family thinking,
- 5:21Speaker 2: like do they know more than us? Do they know anything?
- 5:23Speaker 2: I mean, you're the sister of a race eater had
- 5:26Speaker 2: this work, So no information is the absolute worst thing.
- 5:29Speaker 1: It's funny you just saying that, because it's straightway. Flashback
- 5:32Speaker 1: to my brother when he was with Kawsaki Well Superbikes
- 5:37Speaker 1: just before he retired Round one Philip Island ysh going
- 5:40Speaker 1: down Lucky Heights and at the time got his legs
- 5:43Speaker 1: stuck in the tile wall and then all that drama
- 5:46Speaker 1: which ultimately led to him retiring. But you're talking about
- 5:49Speaker 1: that unknown We didn't know what happened to Chris because
- 5:52Speaker 1: we didn't see it on the TV, or we know
- 5:54Speaker 1: that he's in the medical center. We couldn't go and
- 5:56Speaker 1: see him. It's just you're in this limbo. What is happening?
- 6:02Speaker 1: Why can't we grow?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Can we help?
- 6:03Speaker 1: What is going on? Obviously ultimately he's okay, but yeah,
- 6:07Speaker 1: it's this.
- 6:08Speaker 2: It's a lot and no information. It's just human nature
- 6:12Speaker 2: that you default to the worst possible outcome because no
- 6:15Speaker 2: one's ever like, oh, I don't know anything, but I'm
- 6:17Speaker 2: sure it'll be fine. Like most people don't do that.
- 6:19Speaker 2: In a situation like that, You default to, Oh my god,
- 6:21Speaker 2: I hope they're okay. So very very pleased to see
- 6:25Speaker 2: Jack walk away. Not surprised that brad Ben didn't take
- 6:29Speaker 2: the restart because of the point of impact. He was
- 6:31Speaker 2: a guy hit the ground the hardest on that shoulder.
- 6:33Speaker 2: But watching Fabio Couaaterero Stumbley's way to get on the
- 6:38Speaker 2: spare bike was pretty extraordinary before the race, and then
- 6:41Speaker 2: watching what Fabio did with the spare bike and the
- 6:43Speaker 2: race was pretty amazing as well. But we got super
- 6:46Speaker 2: super lucky that not knowing bit was the worst bit.
- 6:49Speaker 2: But Rinita one more thing before we sort of put
- 6:52Speaker 2: a bow on the Jack Miller first lap accident in Malaysia.
- 6:56Speaker 2: This is one of the sort of unintended consequences of
- 6:58Speaker 2: Dawner changing the sport for twenty twenty three in that
- 7:02Speaker 2: we now have twice the number of race starts that
- 7:04Speaker 2: we used to have because we have sprints, and given
- 7:08Speaker 2: the way modern day mortor GP is raced, the first
- 7:11Speaker 2: few laps are so critical because we're talking about spiky
- 7:13Speaker 2: tire pressure and just the inability of these riders to
- 7:17Speaker 2: really race one another because of the arrow and the machinery.
- 7:19Speaker 2: The first laps of any race now become super critical
- 7:23Speaker 2: and maybe more fraught than they used to be. And
- 7:26Speaker 2: now we've got twice a number of race starts, and
- 7:28Speaker 2: so over the course of a season, you know, you've
- 7:31Speaker 2: got forty race starts now, not twenty. So it's kind
- 7:34Speaker 2: of remarkable.
- 7:35Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:35Speaker 2: All we're doing really is increasing the percentage chance of
- 7:38Speaker 2: incidents like this happening because we're racing impacts like this now.
- 7:41Speaker 2: This track is predictably very problematic, as I mentioned before
- 7:44Speaker 2: in terms of corner layout, But it's one of the
- 7:47Speaker 2: unintended consequences of this, you know, for more entertainment and
- 7:50Speaker 2: for the fans, like you said, but the riders are
- 7:52Speaker 2: doing twice a number of starts that they used to
- 7:54Speaker 2: so things like this are probably more inevitable than they
- 7:57Speaker 2: used to be.
- 7:58Speaker 1: You just mentioned there about how so many races starts,
- 8:03Speaker 1: And one thing I did here over the weekend was
- 8:06Speaker 1: Fabri Corduo actually raced on Sunday with a used retire
- 8:10Speaker 1: and that was because he wanted to get a really
- 8:13Speaker 1: good qualifying because he knew how important it was talking
- 8:16Speaker 1: about how much those midfield battles really just chew through
- 8:20Speaker 1: everything and you can't work your way up to the front.
- 8:22Speaker 1: So that's why I thought it was really interesting, is
- 8:24Speaker 1: we don't often hear that normally. These riders they'll do
- 8:27Speaker 1: they're qualifying on new tires, and they'll do their races
- 8:30Speaker 1: on new tires. When we say new tires, they are
- 8:32Speaker 1: going out, they'll do it maybe a lap, and then
- 8:34Speaker 1: they'll probably come in and even change it when they're
- 8:36Speaker 1: sitting on that sartgrid. But for Fabrio, he went out
- 8:39Speaker 1: on a used retire, so that was big for him.
- 8:42Speaker 1: And then Sunday's Sunday's Grand Prix, he was p six
- 8:49Speaker 1: or seven YEP and then Saturday Sprint he was P. Five,
- 8:53Speaker 1: So he was the first non jew Caddie on Saturday
- 8:55Speaker 1: as well, and the first time that has been a
- 8:57Speaker 1: Japanese manufacturer all seasons, So what is really starting to
- 9:01Speaker 1: make headways here well?
- 9:03Speaker 2: And also Alex Rinz finishing in the top ten in
- 9:04Speaker 2: the Grand Prix for the first time this year as well,
- 9:06Speaker 2: so they had a really really good weekend. And it's
- 9:09Speaker 2: interesting we've talked a bit about this this year with
- 9:13Speaker 2: Yamahara and Honda sort of cast to drift at the back,
- 9:15Speaker 2: and there's been a tendency to put him in the
- 9:17Speaker 2: same basket because you know, they're both Japanese manufacturers who've
- 9:20Speaker 2: won a lot in the past, and you know they
- 9:23Speaker 2: have been well away from the fire at the front.
- 9:25Speaker 2: But my point with these two is, I think Honda
- 9:28Speaker 2: is still trying to work out how to get back.
- 9:30Speaker 2: I think Yamaha has worked out how to do it,
- 9:32Speaker 2: and it's just going to take them time to get back.
- 9:34Speaker 2: I think Yamaha has a pathway and I think Honda's
- 9:36Speaker 2: still looking for one, and I think that's the difference now.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I think look Honda to have made progress in the
- 9:41Speaker 2: back half of this year. I think shahane' Zarko has
- 9:43Speaker 2: been particularly good in the second half of this season,
- 9:46Speaker 2: but there's some way off Yamaha, and I think you
- 9:49Speaker 2: look at what Yamaha is going to do next year.
- 9:51Speaker 2: They've they're one of the few lineups that's going to
- 9:53Speaker 2: retain the same two riders, which is bizarre to think
- 9:56Speaker 2: that they're both Quaerra and Rin's back. They're also going
- 9:59Speaker 2: to have two more b on the grid next year,
- 10:01Speaker 2: will be taking obviously a big interest in that with
- 10:03Speaker 2: Jack Miller joining Pramak Yamaha Pramaha sorry box check. So yeah,
- 10:09Speaker 2: I think they're really moving forward. And so for them
- 10:12Speaker 2: to have a result like this at a track where
- 10:14Speaker 2: they went to preseason testing and massively struggled there, So
- 10:17Speaker 2: to go back there nine months later and have a
- 10:19Speaker 2: result like that, it was exceptional. And look, I know
- 10:22Speaker 2: they're paying Fabio a lot of money, but rides like Sunday,
- 10:27Speaker 2: he's still, to my mind one of the best three
- 10:30Speaker 2: four guys on the grid, and you know, yeah, you
- 10:33Speaker 2: get what you pay for. He is an exceptional rider.
- 10:35Speaker 2: We've already seen him win a World championship and if
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yamaha give him anything resembling a bike that can fight
- 10:40Speaker 2: for anything meaningful, he will be right back up there
- 10:42Speaker 2: really really quickly.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I think, oh, one hundred percent, I completely agree with you.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I think he's one of the most talented writers on
- 10:48Speaker 1: the grid, along with obviously Pecko and Jorge and Mark Marquez.
- 10:51Speaker 1: But you mentioned Zako there, and I thought was really
- 10:54Speaker 1: interesting just talking about the Japanese manufacturers. We can see
- 10:58Speaker 1: this whole new wave coming in with young I wonder
- 11:01Speaker 1: if Honda are going to start to do that, because
- 11:04Speaker 1: Honda are still very traditional in how they do things.
- 11:07Speaker 1: It's no Luca Marini and you and Mia are the
- 11:10Speaker 1: factory riders and Jon Zako and Takanakagami are the privateer team.
- 11:14Speaker 1: So there is a clear cut between them. Where what
- 11:17Speaker 1: we've heard so far from their guys at Yamaha, even
- 11:21Speaker 1: Max Bardolini and Fabrica Dero, they're going, you know, when
- 11:24Speaker 1: Pramaha come in, they are with us. We are all together,
- 11:27Speaker 1: the four of us. And I wonder if now we're
- 11:29Speaker 1: seeing these results come from Zako, is maybe our Honda
- 11:33Speaker 1: starting to change their mentality a little bit or do
- 11:35Speaker 1: they need to change that mentality a little bit?
- 11:38Speaker 2: Well, they need to. I don't think there's any doubt
- 11:40Speaker 2: about that. I mean, they have a hierarchy at Honda,
- 11:42Speaker 2: but it's a vertical hierarchy and I'm doing signs with
- 11:44Speaker 2: my hands here, which is useless for a podcast. But
- 11:46Speaker 2: Yamaha will have this more flatline hierarchy next year and
- 11:49Speaker 2: that we four bikes on one line, and yes, the
- 11:52Speaker 2: factory guys will get the newest equipment first, but it's
- 11:55Speaker 2: not going to be a case of the satellite team
- 11:57Speaker 2: running a whole bunch of hand me down stuffs. And
- 12:00Speaker 2: they've gone with that Olivera Miller rider lineup for Pramaha.
- 12:04Speaker 2: You could go with a young guy if you were
- 12:05Speaker 2: just going to sacrifice one of your seats for a young,
- 12:08Speaker 2: fast guy who might not get great results. He's bringing
- 12:11Speaker 2: some money to the team, like Somcat tantra Ela. Next year,
- 12:15Speaker 2: they're almost got an overqualified satellite team lineup in some
- 12:18Speaker 2: respects with Olivera and Miller. But there's a reason for
- 12:21Speaker 2: that because that bike needs development and they're going to
- 12:24Speaker 2: get that with two super experienced heads who've basically ridden
- 12:27Speaker 2: every other bike there is on the grid. If you're
- 12:30Speaker 2: operating in this flat line structure, I think they'll actually
- 12:33Speaker 2: get to their peak much quicker because of who they've
- 12:35Speaker 2: gotten the second team. We know that Jack's been very
- 12:37Speaker 2: instrumental with to Caddy behind the scenes, testing a lot
- 12:40Speaker 2: of the developments they had Olivera's super experience. They're about
- 12:43Speaker 2: the same age they've had the pretty similar motor GPCVS.
- 12:46Speaker 2: I actually think it's a really smart rider line up
- 12:49Speaker 2: for them. The difficulty for Jack and I am going
- 12:51Speaker 2: to sort of go deep in the weeds with this
- 12:53Speaker 2: for a piece at some point is that, because Jack's
- 12:57Speaker 2: only on a one year contract at Oliverason too, if
- 13:01Speaker 2: the bike gets demonstrably better, then Yamaha might think, oh,
- 13:05Speaker 2: it's now time to bring the fast young guy in
- 13:07Speaker 2: and the guy who'll get sacrificed will be Jack, probably
- 13:10Speaker 2: because he's on the shorter of the two contracts. But
- 13:13Speaker 2: then if Jack proves to be the best developmental and
- 13:16Speaker 2: technical rider of the two behind the scenes with Oliveria,
- 13:18Speaker 2: then you've got a problem if you're Yamaha, because you
- 13:20Speaker 2: probably shouldn't be keeping both of them for the long term.
- 13:23Speaker 2: But which one don't you keep? So that's super interesting.
- 13:26Speaker 2: So I think what Oliver and Miller will do will
- 13:29Speaker 2: bring them up to the front, probably faster than they
- 13:31Speaker 2: would have because they're going to have double the data
- 13:33Speaker 2: and good data coming from two experienced riders. But if
- 13:36Speaker 2: they get too good too quickly, then one of them
- 13:38Speaker 2: is probably on the outer, aren't they. It's curious.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Yeah, see what next year brings, shall we But before
- 13:43Speaker 1: we do that, we still haven't finished this year. Let's
- 13:45Speaker 1: go back to the Malaysian Grand Prix, and I want
- 13:47Speaker 1: to go back to Saturday's qualifying because oh my god,
- 13:51Speaker 1: you just took the words out of my mouth. That
- 13:54Speaker 1: flying lap from Johe Martin and then they come in,
- 13:58Speaker 1: they're fresh tires, take a feel off, they go Peco
- 14:01Speaker 1: Banyaya what our lap?
- 14:05Speaker 2: It was just an it was just an encapsulation of
- 14:07Speaker 2: the entire season where both of them were in a
- 14:10Speaker 2: different category on Saturday, and where it was so awesome
- 14:14Speaker 2: to watch is that Martin went out on that first
- 14:17Speaker 2: run in Q two and just obliterated the lap record
- 14:21Speaker 2: to an extent that none of us thought possible. And
- 14:24Speaker 2: it was really putting the asset on Banyaira. Obviously knowing
- 14:27Speaker 2: that he's trailing in the championship as well, it's like, well,
- 14:30Speaker 2: here's what I can do. Can you match this? And
- 14:33Speaker 2: then watching Banyaya raise the bar even more in that
- 14:37Speaker 2: second lap in Q two and then seeing the gap
- 14:39Speaker 2: they had over everybody else. Alex Marquez was third on
- 14:42Speaker 2: the grid. He was nine tenths of a second behind Martin.
- 14:45Speaker 2: It just shows you the plane that those two were
- 14:47Speaker 2: operating on. But that was an awesome display by the
- 14:50Speaker 2: two of them, because you saw Martin really put the
- 14:54Speaker 2: test mentally on Banyaya, which I don't think anyone was
- 14:58Speaker 2: surprised about because we know how jugem teen roles, but
- 15:01Speaker 2: I don't know about you. When he set that first laptop,
- 15:03Speaker 2: I thought, well, that's it, Like, you know, there's no
- 15:05Speaker 2: way that Banyay is going to be able to make
- 15:08Speaker 2: up that much time on a second run, given that
- 15:10Speaker 2: he'd already been blown into the weeds on the first run.
- 15:13Speaker 2: To watch him dig deep on that second Q two lap,
- 15:17Speaker 2: it was pretty exhilarating to watch. And I love the
- 15:20Speaker 2: moment afterwards in part fer Me where they both sort
- 15:23Speaker 2: of looked each other and gave each other the nod like, yeah, yeah,
- 15:25Speaker 2: I know the risks you just took because I was
- 15:28Speaker 2: just taking them. And it's a conversation that only the
- 15:30Speaker 2: two of them could understand because they were the only
- 15:33Speaker 2: two capable of doing that. It was pretty compelling TV.
- 15:36Speaker 2: And I think what each of them is doing is,
- 15:39Speaker 2: you know, they're redefining the boundaries of what the other
- 15:41Speaker 2: can do now because one of them will put a
- 15:43Speaker 2: challenge out to the other and the other will respond.
- 15:45Speaker 2: And I think that's what's been so cool about this
- 15:47Speaker 2: battle through the year in that, yeah, we know that
- 15:49Speaker 2: the Michelin retire is better this year. We know they're
- 15:52Speaker 2: on an absolutely fantastic bike, but there's other dicaddies in
- 15:55Speaker 2: the field as well. They're just redefining what that bike
- 15:58Speaker 2: can do because they're challenging one another to do it.
- 16:00Speaker 1: What I thought was just so cool about this the
- 16:05Speaker 1: cherry on the top. For me, there was no towing
- 16:08Speaker 1: from either of them. They both did it on a fresh,
- 16:10Speaker 1: clean lap and normally, you know we see these lap records,
- 16:13Speaker 1: it'll be a toe, it'll be something there, or the
- 16:16Speaker 1: mind games are coming in. But it was like, no, no,
- 16:18Speaker 1: I'm going to do this, and then Pecker's like, all right,
- 16:20Speaker 1: I'm going to raise you one and I'm going to
- 16:22Speaker 1: go and do that as well. I just thought it's sportsmanship.
- 16:24Speaker 1: It's so cool, and that's the drama that we've been
- 16:27Speaker 1: needing all year. It's just a shame as coming out
- 16:30Speaker 1: the second last race.
- 16:31Speaker 2: No I know, I mean, you are the towing police
- 16:33Speaker 2: on this podcast. I know how you feel about it,
- 16:35Speaker 2: and look, I don't disagree. There's a purity to doing
- 16:38Speaker 2: it by yourself, which sometimes it isn't always practical. We
- 16:41Speaker 2: know that, but it was It was cool to see
- 16:45Speaker 2: the stakes get raised by Martin and then Banya going
- 16:49Speaker 2: all right, I don't know if I can do this,
- 16:50Speaker 2: but let's try. And even the way the two of
- 16:53Speaker 2: them go about it, like Martin's laps always look more
- 16:56Speaker 2: ragged to me because it feels like he's taking more risk,
- 16:59Speaker 2: whereas Banyay looks Vanyard visually doesn't look faster because everything's
- 17:04Speaker 2: in line, and you know, it's a bit sort of
- 17:06Speaker 2: you know, like belove watching Jorge Lorenzo in his prime,
- 17:08Speaker 2: where you'd see him do a lab and you'd look
- 17:10Speaker 2: at the stop watch and go, huh, that doesn't make
- 17:13Speaker 2: sense with what my eyes just told me, because he
- 17:15Speaker 2: was just so perfectly in line the entire time. Watching
- 17:18Speaker 2: the two of them come at this from completely different
- 17:20Speaker 2: angles and almost achieving the same result, that's kind of cool.
- 17:22Speaker 1: We got to say, but even like in the sprint,
- 17:25Speaker 1: you talk about different angles there the sprint and Sunday's
- 17:27Speaker 1: Grand Prix, the different lines that they were both taking
- 17:30Speaker 1: on the track was phenomenal. You think they're on the
- 17:33Speaker 1: same technically they're on the same bike, right, and Jorge
- 17:37Speaker 1: would come out wide, go into a corner so we
- 17:39Speaker 1: can get that drive for their eggs. That Pecker would
- 17:41Speaker 1: come in with a tighter corner entry so you can
- 17:44Speaker 1: maintain speed throughout the corner. It was fascinating to watch
- 17:47Speaker 1: both of them.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Yeah, agreed, And Spang lends itself to that as well,
- 17:51Speaker 2: because it's so wide. You know, there's so many different
- 17:54Speaker 2: lines you can take into these different corners, and this
- 17:57Speaker 2: is part of what makes Sepang what it is. And
- 17:59Speaker 2: we'll probably get into this. I Reckon's I reckon. It's
- 18:02Speaker 2: a great race track. I know that sounds a bit
- 18:03Speaker 2: contrary to what we saw in the first three laps
- 18:05Speaker 2: on Sunday. It's a really good test track because it's
- 18:07Speaker 2: got every type of corner you could probably imagine. It's
- 18:10Speaker 2: not a great race track, but what it does offer
- 18:12Speaker 2: is because of its width, because it was designed for cars.
- 18:14Speaker 2: As I was saying earlier, there's so many lines that
- 18:18Speaker 2: you can take into those very very different sequences of corners.
- 18:21Speaker 2: So it's the race looks different there, and riders and
- 18:26Speaker 2: their styles I think come out a lot more because
- 18:28Speaker 2: you'll have guys that are trying to back the bike,
- 18:30Speaker 2: watching Jack Miller up the hill and to turn four
- 18:32Speaker 2: with the right leg off the bike the Scandinavian flick,
- 18:34Speaker 2: trying to get it stopped. And there's something cool about
- 18:37Speaker 2: a contrast of styles, and these two have that, and
- 18:40Speaker 2: I think this circuit accentuated it.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Okay, Matt, important question, how loud did you scream at
- 18:47Speaker 1: the TV when Peco crashed out of Saturday's Sprint? Because
- 18:50Speaker 1: for me, I'm sure my neighbors were like, what is
- 18:53Speaker 1: going on?
- 18:54Speaker 2: I could not believe it. So I'll peel the curtain
- 18:58Speaker 2: back a little bit here, as I have a fairly
- 19:01Speaker 2: elaborate set up here in the home office where there's
- 19:05Speaker 2: multiple screens going on, and one of my screens has
- 19:08Speaker 2: the lifetiming on it, and the lifetiming is always about
- 19:11Speaker 2: twenty seconds ahead of the actual TV feed, and so
- 19:14Speaker 2: some I park it slightly out of sight because I
- 19:17Speaker 2: don't like to watch the timing and not watch the
- 19:19Speaker 2: action while I'm taking notes of what's going on, and
- 19:21Speaker 2: out of the corner of my eye, I saw something
- 19:24Speaker 2: tumbling down the time sheet out of the corner of
- 19:27Speaker 2: my eye and the timing screen, and I couldn't help myself,
- 19:30Speaker 2: so I said a glance sideways, and I just saw
- 19:31Speaker 2: Banna's name going down the timing sheet, and I've oh,
- 19:34Speaker 2: my god, he's gone. And of course, like the TV
- 19:37Speaker 2: pictures are fifteen seconds by the timing, it's just the
- 19:39Speaker 2: product of the way the timing works and the way
- 19:41Speaker 2: TV works. And so I look up and I'm going, oh,
- 19:43Speaker 2: it's going to be turned nine, isn't it, Where so
- 19:45Speaker 2: many guys have gone down in the past. He was
- 19:47Speaker 2: heading towards turn nine. You knew he was going to
- 19:49Speaker 2: tuck the front and that was the end of it.
- 19:50Speaker 2: So I didn't have quite the same response as you
- 19:53Speaker 2: because I kind of knew what was going to happen
- 19:54Speaker 2: about fifteen seconds beforehand. So spoiler alert for everybody. If
- 19:59Speaker 2: you don't want your live viewing of Murdo GP to
- 20:01Speaker 2: be completely ruined while you're watching it in the time,
- 20:03Speaker 2: don't have the lifetiming on like me, park it off
- 20:06Speaker 2: to the side where you can't see it and check
- 20:07Speaker 2: it afterwards. So I kind of spoiled my own surprise.
- 20:09Speaker 1: There, didn't I Oh no, that's a shame, honestly, because
- 20:12Speaker 1: I report live for Fox Sports on the socials, and
- 20:15Speaker 1: so when that happened, I wanted to throw my laptop.
- 20:19Speaker 1: I couldn't believe it. I was just going, oh, Pecco,
- 20:23Speaker 1: what are you doing? But he was just pushing hard
- 20:26Speaker 1: and I love that. After the race, you know, Jorgesan,
- 20:29Speaker 1: you know, you know Peco was trying too hard. Blah
- 20:32Speaker 1: blah blah, pecock is I am going to send it tomorrow.
- 20:37Speaker 1: And that is what he did Sunday before we had
- 20:39Speaker 1: that red flag. Those two they must have touched going
- 20:44Speaker 1: down that straight into turn one. You could just see
- 20:46Speaker 1: them get so close, and they were like, it's like
- 20:48Speaker 1: a game of chicken. Who was going to break first?
- 20:51Speaker 2: Completely that first start, which we've kind of overlooked a
- 20:53Speaker 2: little bit because the race was red flagged on lap one,
- 20:55Speaker 2: but Banyaya dangling the right leg off Martin seeing it
- 20:59Speaker 2: have to slide, they check up on the inside to
- 21:01Speaker 2: avoid running into him. They were, yeah, it was completely
- 21:04Speaker 2: a game of chicken. It's like I'm not breaking, so
- 21:06Speaker 2: you breaking. There was a lot of that going on,
- 21:08Speaker 2: so it would have been really interesting to see how
- 21:10Speaker 2: that played out. But I think we've probably now I
- 21:13Speaker 2: don't know your run shit here, but I'm sure we're
- 21:15Speaker 2: about to talk about would you say it was eleven
- 21:17Speaker 2: overtakes in three laps or something? It felt like about
- 21:19Speaker 2: twenty one overtakes in three laps? I don't know about you.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Was that the best opening to a Grand Prix we've
- 21:26Speaker 2: seen in as long as I can remember? That was
- 21:30Speaker 2: absolutely wild, those firstly three laps. Just the sheer intensity
- 21:34Speaker 2: of it. It was pretty staggering, wasn't it.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Oh, And that's what's so exciting about MotoGP is when
- 21:40Speaker 1: we have races like this, is they are going head
- 21:44Speaker 1: to head and it's who's going to break first, who's
- 21:47Speaker 1: going to check out first, who's going to pull a
- 21:49Speaker 1: move that they didn't see coming? Keeps you on the
- 21:52Speaker 1: edge of your seat the whole race, And obviously we
- 21:55Speaker 1: know what the ultimate outcome was, but those beginning laps,
- 21:58Speaker 1: it's like, I am speechless. But the same time, I
- 22:03Speaker 1: read a quote from Mark Marquez going they were battling
- 22:06Speaker 1: like that, and they were still pulling away from me,
- 22:08Speaker 1: and he was sitting there at third, which I thought
- 22:10Speaker 1: was fascinating that these guys are going on the absolute
- 22:13Speaker 1: edge and they're still gapping.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Yeah, the performance that the two of them have got
- 22:17Speaker 2: was talking about with qualifying before. But the little subtext
- 22:21Speaker 2: to all of this, of course, is that because of
- 22:24Speaker 2: the championship position, he Martin could have won the championship
- 22:27Speaker 2: on Sunday, so he theoretically should have been risking less.
- 22:32Speaker 2: There was no need for him to be that aggressive
- 22:35Speaker 2: in the first three laps. But I think he did
- 22:38Speaker 2: it well for two reasons. I think we know the
- 22:40Speaker 2: value of racing at the front in terms of keeping
- 22:43Speaker 2: your tire temperature and pressure under control, so on and
- 22:46Speaker 2: so forth. But I think Jorge Martin's tried to ride
- 22:51Speaker 2: counter to his instincts before, and I don't reckon it
- 22:53Speaker 2: works for him, where some guys it's like, okay, if
- 22:56Speaker 2: I need to finish fifth to day, if finished fifth,
- 22:59Speaker 2: and there'll be guy that do that. Now, I think
- 23:01Speaker 2: Bagnai would be better placed, just personality wise and with
- 23:05Speaker 2: a mentality that he would have raced that race really differently.
- 23:08Speaker 2: I reckon if he was the one with the championship advantage,
- 23:11Speaker 2: whereas Martin is I'm not going to call him a
- 23:14Speaker 2: one trick pony because it sounds like I'm devaluing what
- 23:15Speaker 2: he does. But he has a very very significant advantage
- 23:18Speaker 2: is that he gets up to his best speed really
- 23:21Speaker 2: really fast, and his whole mo is about being super aggressive.
- 23:26Speaker 2: So if he has to write harder and think less,
- 23:29Speaker 2: it's probably the better for him. And so look, if
- 23:32Speaker 2: they both be n f'd on Sunday, it was going
- 23:33Speaker 2: to be to Martine's benefit because there's one fewer race
- 23:36Speaker 2: for Vanyay to catch up points. But it was so
- 23:38Speaker 2: interesting that he decided to back his instincts and be
- 23:41Speaker 2: himself even though he didn't need to, because that's when
- 23:43Speaker 2: he can be the best version of himself. So I
- 23:46Speaker 2: thought that was interesting in that had Banyai had a
- 23:49Speaker 2: twenty nine point lead over Martine, I think we would
- 23:51Speaker 2: have seen a really different race in that Banyai I
- 23:54Speaker 2: would have said, cool, go and knock yourself out, go
- 23:56Speaker 2: go for your life. I don't care because I would
- 23:58Speaker 2: just sit behind you because I've got a performance and
- 24:00Speaker 2: I'll finished second and you're already taking five points off me. Anyway,
- 24:03Speaker 2: So we got that outcome with Banyaia beating Martin, But
- 24:06Speaker 2: it was just so interesting that Martin was true to himself,
- 24:10Speaker 2: and to be fair, I think that's what's got him
- 24:13Speaker 2: to this point in the championship. In that last year,
- 24:16Speaker 2: it felt like from the outside that he might have
- 24:18Speaker 2: overthought it a bit, and this year he's like, no, no,
- 24:22Speaker 2: let's just park the brain and do what got me here.
- 24:24Speaker 2: It's probably going to see him crowd world champion in
- 24:26Speaker 2: two weeks time. But even in that fight, what made
- 24:29Speaker 2: that fight was Martin's willingness to have it because he
- 24:33Speaker 2: didn't need to, but he chose to, and I thought
- 24:35Speaker 2: that was it was fantastic for us, It was amazing TV.
- 24:38Speaker 2: But I think it was a pretty interesting insight into
- 24:40Speaker 2: his psyche this year, and that's the biggest change he's
- 24:42Speaker 2: made from twenty three to twenty four. He's now not
- 24:45Speaker 2: apologizing for being there, and he's not trying to be
- 24:47Speaker 2: someone he's not. He's now going to be authentic. This
- 24:51Speaker 2: is how I got here, this is how I'm in
- 24:52Speaker 2: the lead, this is how I'm going to win the
- 24:54Speaker 2: World Championship. I thought that was just super interesting because
- 24:58Speaker 2: psychologically there was a lot going on in that race.
- 25:00Speaker 2: The old Martin I wouldn't have trusted in a situation
- 25:03Speaker 2: like that, But I think the evolution of him this year,
- 25:05Speaker 2: I'm not surprised he raced like that because that's who
- 25:07Speaker 2: he is, but also knowing, knowing when to know that
- 25:12Speaker 2: you're beaten and not step over that line. He tried
- 25:15Speaker 2: to get the win, he didn't get it, but ultimately
- 25:17Speaker 2: it didn't hurt him because he did the next best thing.
- 25:20Speaker 2: And this is this crazy stat now and I think
- 25:22Speaker 2: I raised this every single podcast. Thirty podiums in thirty
- 25:25Speaker 2: eight races now for Martin this year, which is mad.
- 25:28Speaker 2: But also he's finished second sixteen times through Sprints and
- 25:33Speaker 2: Grand Prix, so he wins when he can win, and
- 25:36Speaker 2: on the days that he can't, he finishes second. So
- 25:38Speaker 2: Banyai's won ten Grand Prix this year, Martin's finished second
- 25:41Speaker 2: in six of those, so he's mistigated the damage in
- 25:45Speaker 2: the best way possible, and that's why he's going to
- 25:47Speaker 2: win this championship.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I was hearing something about apparently last year Joe Martin
- 25:53Speaker 1: got to this point in the championship. He couldn't sleep,
- 25:56Speaker 1: he couldn't eat, he was just nervous and stressed, and
- 25:59Speaker 1: I don't know if you saw it on the broadcast,
- 26:01Speaker 1: you could see his girlfriend and his family, especially when
- 26:04Speaker 1: the red flag and the Reselle happened, and the nerves,
- 26:08Speaker 1: and then you see Jojo Martine and he's just like
- 26:10Speaker 1: leaning back on his chair. You see him here he
- 26:12Speaker 1: visualizes a lap. You see him get into race mode,
- 26:15Speaker 1: but he looked cool, calm and collected, and you're like, okay,
- 26:19Speaker 1: what you said is hit the nail on the head?
- 26:21Speaker 1: Is that is the new jogem Martine? So he's like,
- 26:24Speaker 1: I'm going to go out there and I'm going to
- 26:26Speaker 1: race him because I know what he wants to do.
- 26:28Speaker 1: He's going to fully send it, so I'm going to
- 26:30Speaker 1: fully send it as well.
- 26:32Speaker 2: And isn't sports so much more interesting at this level
- 26:34Speaker 2: when you've got different ways of trying to achieve the
- 26:38Speaker 2: same goal, different personalities, different nationalities, different tactics, different mindset.
- 26:43Speaker 2: That's what makes you know, what's the saying in boxing?
- 26:45Speaker 2: Styles make fights? You know, it's one of those things
- 26:48Speaker 2: that you know, if everyone did the same thing, it'd
- 26:49Speaker 2: be pretty boring. And it's really interesting watching Martine now
- 26:53Speaker 2: with the visualization. They love doing that, but he has
- 26:56Speaker 2: admitted he's dot a lot of work on the mental
- 26:58Speaker 2: side of things. But these guys are smart, like they
- 27:01Speaker 2: know where the cameras are. He knows there's going to
- 27:04Speaker 2: be a camera on him in the garage, and if
- 27:06Speaker 2: he's panicky and jumpy and fraught and you know, pretty
- 27:09Speaker 2: similar to like his dad and his girlfriend and the
- 27:11Speaker 2: other people in his entourage, the camera is going to
- 27:15Speaker 2: stay there and focus on that, keep chipping away at that.
- 27:18Speaker 2: If he presents this sort of outer sheet of no, no,
- 27:20Speaker 2: I'm good, you know, I'm ready to go. I'm doing
- 27:22Speaker 2: a visualization, I'm all fine. It's not amazing TV for daughter.
- 27:26Speaker 2: They just move on to the next person. So he's
- 27:29Speaker 2: actually playing that aspect of it really really well. Probably
- 27:33Speaker 2: wore his heart a little bit overly much on his
- 27:36Speaker 2: sleeve publicly last year. Other about you. But what's interesting
- 27:39Speaker 2: for me is, I'm look, he's going to win the championship.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Let's be honest. Here, will that sort of facade of
- 27:46Speaker 2: calm and everything once he wins it, will that just
- 27:48Speaker 2: completely crack and he'll go crazier than any crazy person's
- 27:52Speaker 2: gone before because he's been bottling all this all up
- 27:55Speaker 2: for the entire year. Trying to make up for what
- 27:57Speaker 2: happened last year. Is that raw emotion you're going to
- 28:00Speaker 2: come out when there's an outcome, Because I keep thinking
- 28:03Speaker 2: back to Valencia last year. He was so sort of
- 28:07Speaker 2: adamant and belligerent the whole year. Last year, when he
- 28:09Speaker 2: crashed at Valencia and lost the championship, there was this
- 28:12Speaker 2: amazing video that was going around on Dorner that you
- 28:14Speaker 2: probably saw. Once he got back to the box with
- 28:16Speaker 2: his team and his mechanics and his people, and the
- 28:21Speaker 2: facade just broke. He just completely broke down, and he
- 28:24Speaker 2: was publicly really really emotional, and I think he'd repressed
- 28:28Speaker 2: that quite a bit. So it was nice to see
- 28:30Speaker 2: how much he cared for one, but it also showed
- 28:33Speaker 2: you how tightly wound up he'd been for the second
- 28:35Speaker 2: half of last year, and when it was really over,
- 28:38Speaker 2: he let himself go. And there's almost been this feeling
- 28:43Speaker 2: with him. I've since this year that I never want
- 28:45Speaker 2: to feel like that again, And so the whole way
- 28:48Speaker 2: he's gone about twenty twenty four has been I know
- 28:51Speaker 2: how bad that felt. I have no intention of going
- 28:54Speaker 2: back there. So even if I lose, I'm not going
- 28:56Speaker 2: to go down that path. Again. But when I win,
- 28:59Speaker 2: I think this celebrations of the emotion will be pretty
- 29:02Speaker 2: extreme because I reckon he's just been holding it, holding it,
- 29:05Speaker 2: holding it for the entire year. And more power to
- 29:08Speaker 2: him if he's able to overcome that and make himself
- 29:10Speaker 2: a better writer. And with the World Championship against a
- 29:12Speaker 2: guy who's having quite frankly, one of the best seasons
- 29:15Speaker 2: historically in Grand Prix we've ever seen championship very very
- 29:18Speaker 2: well earned because he completely deserves it.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Isn't it fascinating though, that Pekubo is having one of
- 29:24Speaker 1: the best championships seasons ever and he's second in the
- 29:27Speaker 1: World Championship.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Yeah, unreal. So I am going to write something about
- 29:32Speaker 2: this spoiler my own story here in the next couple
- 29:34Speaker 2: of days. But so, Martin's leading the World Championship is
- 29:38Speaker 2: twenty four points with one round to go. So Martin
- 29:41Speaker 2: has outscored Baannyai by forty eight points in sprints, Bangnai
- 29:46Speaker 2: has outscored Martin by twenty four points in Grand Prix.
- 29:49Speaker 2: So the margin that Martin has over Banyora in the
- 29:52Speaker 2: entire World Championship is exactly the same margin that Bangnai
- 29:56Speaker 2: has over Martin in the Sunday races twenty four points.
- 30:00Speaker 2: It shows you, you know, Vanyai has won ten races.
- 30:02Speaker 2: There's only three other riders who've won more than ten
- 30:06Speaker 2: races in a season in Motor GP history, and they've
- 30:08Speaker 2: all won the World Championship Valentino Rossi twice, Casey Stona twice,
- 30:12Speaker 2: Mark Marquez twice. Vanyai's won ten, could be eleven by
- 30:16Speaker 2: the end of the season, and he's probably not winning
- 30:18Speaker 2: the World Championship. So it shows you how good he's
- 30:21Speaker 2: been on Sundays. And the whole thing comes down to
- 30:24Speaker 2: the fact that he's still after two years, hasn't got
- 30:26Speaker 2: the sprints right, and last year Martin led him off
- 30:30Speaker 2: the hook by making too many mistakes. This year, Martin
- 30:32Speaker 2: hasn't made the mistakes and it's going to come back
- 30:34Speaker 2: to bite him. But it's just so interesting that you
- 30:38Speaker 2: always refer to Banyoro as the professor, and I love
- 30:40Speaker 2: that too for him, because the more time he has
- 30:43Speaker 2: to get a weekend right, the better he's going to be.
- 30:46Speaker 2: I think he builds slowly to his ceiling and his potential.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Martin gets out there and just goes bang first lap
- 30:52Speaker 2: when it actually matters, and he's there. I don't reckon
- 30:55Speaker 2: he has as much room to grow after that, because
- 30:57Speaker 2: he gets closer to his ceiling much quicker than Banyai does.
- 31:00Speaker 2: And that's how the sprints work. Because the sprints, you've
- 31:02Speaker 2: got to be on it because it's a shorter distance
- 31:04Speaker 2: and you've got to go in the early parts of
- 31:06Speaker 2: those races. It goes against Spanya's methodical way of working.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Martin just gets out there and just let's go, and
- 31:12Speaker 2: he's on it. And that's the difference in this World Championship.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Martin's been so good in the sprints. Bano's helping him
- 31:18Speaker 2: by falling offtivity times. But that's where this championship is
- 31:20Speaker 2: going to be decided and why in the history books
- 31:23Speaker 2: in the years to come, we'll look back and go,
- 31:25Speaker 2: how did this guy win ten or eleven Grand Prix
- 31:27Speaker 2: and not win the championship? How does that work? But
- 31:30Speaker 2: very specific set of circumstances because we've got sprint races now.
- 31:34Speaker 1: It's just this year, this season, we knew it was
- 31:36Speaker 1: going to be a battle between Juge and Peko, but
- 31:39Speaker 1: I didn't expect to come down to what we've just
- 31:42Speaker 1: discussed in this last half an hour. On this pod
- 31:44Speaker 1: is the difference in the personality. Is the difference in
- 31:47Speaker 1: the mentality. They're on the exact same bikes and talking
- 31:51Speaker 1: about writing styles and everything that's so different. And that's
- 31:53Speaker 1: what makes Moto GP just phenomena. I know I've said
- 31:56Speaker 1: that so many times in this pod, but you know,
- 31:58Speaker 1: we talk about a lot of different motors's at Fox
- 32:00Speaker 1: Sports and from Memoto GP is just it is a
- 32:04Speaker 1: cut above the rest because we're experiencing this.
- 32:07Speaker 2: I've got a question for you. I'm going to put
- 32:09Speaker 2: you out of the host chair for a minute here
- 32:11Speaker 2: take over. Do you find it What do you think
- 32:14Speaker 2: about the whole Dukatti thing in terms of the fact
- 32:16Speaker 2: that they know that the rider that's probably going to
- 32:20Speaker 2: win the World Championship and the team that he rides
- 32:23Speaker 2: for are both leaving Dakadi at the end of the season.
- 32:25Speaker 2: So Martine's off to a Prillier, Prama's off to Yamaha.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Are you surprised that Dacadi hasn't got more involved here
- 32:32Speaker 2: and tried to I don't know. It's hard to manipulate
- 32:35Speaker 2: a result towards Vannaya, but clearly Ducaddi would like the
- 32:38Speaker 2: World Championship crowd and the number one to stay in
- 32:40Speaker 2: the factory team. That's probably not going to happen. Are
- 32:43Speaker 2: you a little bit surprised that Dacadi hasn't got more
- 32:45Speaker 2: involved here, because it's commendable that they have let them race.
- 32:48Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, Motor GP is
- 32:50Speaker 2: a marketing exercise, and it's a branding exercise. And so
- 32:53Speaker 2: every time you hear Martin's name next season, should he
- 32:56Speaker 2: convert this in Barcelona, it'll be world champion hale hay
- 33:00Speaker 2: Martin and they'll cut to a picture of him and
- 33:02Speaker 2: he'll be writing in a prillier. You know. So I
- 33:05Speaker 2: do wonder about it, like, what do you think? Are
- 33:07Speaker 2: you surprised that Katie hasn't got involved yet?
- 33:09Speaker 1: Look, I got into mindsets, I go, yeah, I am
- 33:13Speaker 1: surprised exactly for the reasons that you said. It's too Catti.
- 33:17Speaker 1: They've worked so hard. Remember years ago we'd be talking
- 33:19Speaker 1: about oh Ju Caddia back down where Yamaha and Honda
- 33:22Speaker 1: are now. Yeah, so they've done a full three sixty
- 33:25Speaker 1: and of course they want to take as much of
- 33:27Speaker 1: the wins and the celebration as they can one hundred percent.
- 33:30Speaker 1: But then the other mindset that I go into is
- 33:33Speaker 1: if du Caddi interfere, or if it looks like at
- 33:37Speaker 1: any point they are interfering, that's going to look so
- 33:40Speaker 1: bad and reflect on them that you know they did that.
- 33:43Speaker 1: They didn't let joorhe win. He clearly was the better writer,
- 33:47Speaker 1: or whatever the situation may be, they're not. I think
- 33:51Speaker 1: if they interfere, it's gonna reflect badly on them. So
- 33:54Speaker 1: I think that's why they're stepping back and listening to
- 33:59Speaker 1: Shea Baddie or I've just lost his name, the man
- 34:03Speaker 1: with the eyebrows and g Catti course with the eyebrows, Digitalia,
- 34:10Speaker 1: the man with the eyebrows. I'm so sorry, sorry Gig.
- 34:13Speaker 1: But you hear them in the interviews and they're like, no, no, no,
- 34:16Speaker 1: we respect Jorge, respect what he does. We respect Peker
- 34:19Speaker 1: and what he does. And these are our two best riders,
- 34:22Speaker 1: and they're battling at From what they're saying is like,
- 34:25Speaker 1: we're going to take that step back and we're going
- 34:27Speaker 1: to let them decide.
- 34:29Speaker 2: I think it's kind of a lesser of it's kind
- 34:30Speaker 2: of lesser of two evils.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Right, because yeah, yeah, I mean way better than I did.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Like Neither of them are great outcomes, but
- 34:38Speaker 2: there's one that's worse than the other. And I think
- 34:40Speaker 2: that's kind of the way they've looked at it. But
- 34:42Speaker 2: I guess a wider picture this might be an off
- 34:44Speaker 2: season podcast. Are they going to live to regret letting
- 34:48Speaker 2: Martin go? Because effectively they have they've forced him into
- 34:51Speaker 2: a position to leave. He's younger than Peco for one
- 34:55Speaker 2: season at least, he's going to be better than Pecko. Now,
- 34:58Speaker 2: if you've got the chance to sign Mark Cares, I
- 35:01Speaker 2: don't think you go, Oh maybe not. I think you
- 35:03Speaker 2: probably do. But it comes at the expense of possibly
- 35:06Speaker 2: losing the generation's fastest writer. So it looks a lovely
- 35:10Speaker 2: problem to have. But I don't think there's any right
- 35:12Speaker 2: answers in this. But man, what a conundrum. When they
- 35:15Speaker 2: made that decision back in June, they probably made it thinking, well,
- 35:19Speaker 2: this might be the end of Martine's World Championship contender.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Now we'll probably be fine. It's kind of their doomsday
- 35:25Speaker 2: scenario coming back to bite them here, because they were
- 35:27Speaker 2: damned if they didn't Damned if they didn't. Right, if
- 35:30Speaker 2: you've got a chance to sign marquees and you don't
- 35:32Speaker 2: and he goes somewhere else and beats you. That's the
- 35:34Speaker 2: ultimate egg on your face. He's signing a six time
- 35:37Speaker 2: Boo GP world champion, but at the cost of watching
- 35:40Speaker 2: Martine walk out the door like that's really tough. So yeah,
- 35:44Speaker 2: interesting with Dicadie. They've had such an awesome year. They
- 35:46Speaker 2: win everything every weekend, and yet there might be a
- 35:48Speaker 2: slightly bitter taste to all of this because they're going
- 35:52Speaker 2: to be losing. They were going to lose something at
- 35:55Speaker 2: the end of it, regardless, and you know, it's an
- 35:58Speaker 2: amazing achievement. They've got the best bike on the grid.
- 36:00Speaker 2: We've seen that the whole year, except for that random
- 36:03Speaker 2: Maverick Videalo is a brilliant winning at Kosher. But yeah,
- 36:06Speaker 2: they are going to lose a little bit even though
- 36:08Speaker 2: they win.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Right, Well, you're just talking about Mark Marquez going to
- 36:12Speaker 1: the factory to Caddy and I guess it's too early
- 36:14Speaker 1: to tell. But you see all these signs, You see
- 36:17Speaker 1: the fans, you hear people talking what Mark's done this
- 36:20Speaker 1: year on a GP twenty three is phenomenal. When you
- 36:23Speaker 1: look at Frankie Morbidelli, who's on a GP twenty four,
- 36:27Speaker 1: factory bike, and he's down the field and Abashanin is
- 36:30Speaker 1: not always up the front, right, he's further down the
- 36:32Speaker 1: field sometimes. And then we see Mark Marquez and what
- 36:35Speaker 1: he's done the second half of the year. So I
- 36:37Speaker 1: get what you're saying about JJ Martine leaving, but if
- 36:39Speaker 1: you look at what Mark Marquez has done, I think
- 36:41Speaker 1: they're like, look, we're going to give away Hey Martin,
- 36:45Speaker 1: but look what we can.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Have with Mark Martin.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Yeah, Mark and Peco battling for the Germanship and guarantee
- 36:51Speaker 1: one of them is going to win.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Well, Mark and Peco and all the marketing and the
- 36:55Speaker 2: attention and the oxygen that comes with Mark because he's
- 36:58Speaker 2: still the biggest star in the sport, even though he
- 36:59Speaker 2: hasn't won achampionship now since twenty nineteen, and we all
- 37:02Speaker 2: know why that is. But I think this year for
- 37:04Speaker 2: me was you have to have your doubts with Mark
- 37:07Speaker 2: to an extent because it's been a long time since
- 37:09Speaker 2: he's won, and his body's gone through so much. There
- 37:12Speaker 2: had to be the questions like, well, has this guy
- 37:14Speaker 2: still got it or is it the bike? When he
- 37:16Speaker 2: was at Hondi, you had to ask the question because
- 37:18Speaker 2: you know he's it's funny to think, I think you'll
- 37:20Speaker 2: be the second oldest guy on the grid now, now
- 37:22Speaker 2: that for next year, after Alasias Barger advertise, I think
- 37:25Speaker 2: it's only Jean Zarko that's older, if I'm reading that correctly.
- 37:28Speaker 2: It's funny to think of Mark as one of the
- 37:30Speaker 2: seasoned veterans now, but you've got to ask questions of
- 37:33Speaker 2: a guy in his early thirties. He's had four shoulder surgeries,
- 37:36Speaker 2: like well, do you still have it or not? And
- 37:38Speaker 2: I think this year has emphatically answered that question. And
- 37:42Speaker 2: I know I keep looking forward to next year, like
- 37:44Speaker 2: I'm talking about this year's already over. But man Bagnaia
- 37:47Speaker 2: and Marquez in the same factory to caddy box, like
- 37:51Speaker 2: let's get the pop called out, that's going to be massive.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Let's just touch a little bit more on the Malaysian
- 37:58Speaker 1: Grand Prix because after Mark marquees and know we're praising
- 38:01Speaker 1: him here, but he did crash out of Sunday's crand
- 38:04Speaker 1: Prix and Neyvashanini was third, and he was ten point
- 38:08Speaker 1: four seconds behind our leaders talking about.
- 38:13Speaker 2: He barely saw him. Now, we barely saw him on
- 38:15Speaker 2: the coverage because he was in a different He was
- 38:17Speaker 2: in a different category to the front two, like the
- 38:19Speaker 2: rest of the worthy entire weekend, and he wasn't super
- 38:22Speaker 2: happy about it either, was he. An Aya, He's just
- 38:24Speaker 2: disappointed with the way the whole weekend had gone. So look,
- 38:27Speaker 2: the GP twenty four is so good that he was
- 38:28Speaker 2: able to still get on the podium with it. And
- 38:31Speaker 2: you've got this battle going on between Marques and Bastianini
- 38:35Speaker 2: for third World championship, which you know it's not first,
- 38:38Speaker 2: but they'll be happy to win it over the other,
- 38:41Speaker 2: particularly given that Mark is taking an a seat at
- 38:44Speaker 2: the Factory Tea for next year. But yeah, he was
- 38:47Speaker 2: Bastianini was best of the rest, but the rest were
- 38:50Speaker 2: in a different sport pretty much, weren't they on the
- 38:52Speaker 2: work end.
- 38:53Speaker 1: I'm just looking at the race results, so we know
- 38:55Speaker 1: Alex Marquez, we know that this this track seems to
- 38:58Speaker 1: somehow suit him. So he was on the front road
- 39:00Speaker 1: for qualifying. But even he was twelve seconds behind our
- 39:03Speaker 1: leader Pedro Cossa thirteen point six seconds if we go
- 39:06Speaker 1: all the way down to Augusto Fernandez who finished tenth.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Now that I feel like that must have been one
- 39:12Speaker 1: of his highest results this year, it was twenty two
- 39:16Speaker 1: seconds behind our leaders.
- 39:18Speaker 2: That's phenomenal, right over a second a lap, you know,
- 39:21Speaker 2: nineteen lap race after they restarted at twenty two seconds behind.
- 39:24Speaker 2: So you're shipping one and a bit seconds a lap
- 39:27Speaker 2: to the guys at the front, and then by the
- 39:29Speaker 2: end of it, you don't know how hard beanyo. I
- 39:31Speaker 2: was pushing anyway, because he had a pretty comfortable lead
- 39:33Speaker 2: those last five laps. So they'll show you the gap
- 39:36Speaker 2: that the rest of them have to make it up,
- 39:37Speaker 2: doesn't it well?
- 39:38Speaker 1: Sorry, So you just touched then on Peko, and I
- 39:40Speaker 1: wanted to say I read in an interview that he
- 39:43Speaker 1: we've seen previously where there will be times if a
- 39:46Speaker 1: World championship with the title fight, they're out in the
- 39:49Speaker 1: front and they know that they're fighter, the battle is
- 39:53Speaker 1: behind them, they'll actually slow down to try and create more.
- 39:56Speaker 1: And I read that Peco was like, I'm not doing that,
- 40:00Speaker 1: and how interesting, because I think it was. I feel
- 40:05Speaker 1: like Valentino's definitely done it at some stage. I'm also
- 40:09Speaker 1: thinking back to like the late nineties, where it might
- 40:11Speaker 1: have been like a Marco Milandry or so.
- 40:14Speaker 2: My favorite one in this particular category, I do you're
- 40:17Speaker 2: going to go here? So talking about marquees, but one
- 40:20Speaker 2: of the older guys these days. It was twenty thirteen
- 40:22Speaker 2: Mark's rookie season when he was going to win the
- 40:25Speaker 2: World championship. In the last round of Valencia. The only
- 40:28Speaker 2: I think he Jorge Lorenzo needed Mark to finish something
- 40:31Speaker 2: like fifth or less to beat him, so it was
- 40:33Speaker 2: a log shot. Lorenzo got to the front of that
- 40:36Speaker 2: race and then slowed the pace down so ridiculously that
- 40:39Speaker 2: the entire field were climbing all over Marquez who was
- 40:42Speaker 2: coming behind him. And then I ripso Holda had Danny
- 40:45Speaker 2: Pedroza at that time, so Pedrosa would pass Lorenzo because
- 40:48Speaker 2: Lorenzo was literally go so slowly. Lorenzo would go back
- 40:51Speaker 2: past Padroza and then back everybody up again, and it
- 40:54Speaker 2: was ridiculous. The first half of the race. It's like
- 40:56Speaker 2: they were having a walking pace where Lorenzo just kept
- 40:58Speaker 2: looking over his shoulder to make sure there were still
- 41:00Speaker 2: eight guys in the front pack because he was slowing
- 41:02Speaker 2: down so much. When he then realized that the rest
- 41:06Speaker 2: of the pack didn't have enough pace to trouble Marquez,
- 41:08Speaker 2: he just decided, oh well, I'm just going to go
- 41:10Speaker 2: and then just completely cleared off and won the race
- 41:13Speaker 2: and thought, well, whatever happens to Mark happens to Mark.
- 41:15Speaker 2: And I think Marks finished third that day, so he
- 41:18Speaker 2: won the world title. But it was the just most
- 41:22Speaker 2: cunning display of just complete bastardry by Lareze. I loved
- 41:25Speaker 2: it because he was so trying to mess with Marquez's head.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Mark is a twenty year old rookie about to win
- 41:30Speaker 2: the world championship, and he's like, I'm going to make
- 41:32Speaker 2: you sweat for this. It was just so brilliant to
- 41:35Speaker 2: watch because Jorge had the rest of them just on
- 41:37Speaker 2: puppet streets. He knew exactly what he was doing. But
- 41:40Speaker 2: Baniel's point. I did hear that on Sunday and thought
- 41:42Speaker 2: that was interesting too, because it was two things. There's
- 41:46Speaker 2: a purity to the way that Banyai likes to win. Now,
- 41:49Speaker 2: whether that's practical or not most of the time, who knows,
- 41:51Speaker 2: but he's like, no, no, I'm not going to resource
- 41:53Speaker 2: to that. The other part about it is it would
- 41:56Speaker 2: be useless if you were going to resort to that,
- 41:59Speaker 2: because the two of them just too fast for everybody.
- 42:01Speaker 2: And this is the problem. Even if he was to
- 42:03Speaker 2: back Martine up, which is hard to do on a tracklight.
- 42:06Speaker 2: So pang anyway, because it's so wide, where's the rest
- 42:08Speaker 2: of the pack anyway? You're mentioning that guys, you know,
- 42:11Speaker 2: finishing fourth or twelve seconds behind. It wasn't like you
- 42:14Speaker 2: had a whole cluster of them within three seconds of
- 42:16Speaker 2: each other, where it becomes practical. You can slow it
- 42:18Speaker 2: up all you like, you can't slow it up enough
- 42:20Speaker 2: for those guys to get in the fight. So it's
- 42:22Speaker 2: kind of a moot point, Like, even if he wanted to,
- 42:25Speaker 2: I don't know if it's practical to do that because
- 42:27Speaker 2: the rest of the feel is just not quick enough.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head.
- 42:31Speaker 1: I just thought it was funny when they bought that up,
- 42:34Speaker 1: and I'm thinking about the amount of times that it
- 42:35Speaker 1: has happened in the past, where yeah, it's just like
- 42:37Speaker 1: I'm going to do whatever I can to make sure
- 42:39Speaker 1: I'm in the right position and they're in the right position.
- 42:42Speaker 1: And Pecko's like, nah, I'm good, I'm good. But let's
- 42:45Speaker 1: think we've I think we've done all of Moto GP.
- 42:47Speaker 1: I don't know what else we can talk about other
- 42:49Speaker 1: than just go and watch those first three laps and
- 42:52Speaker 1: go and watch qualifying because if you haven't seen it, oh,
- 42:54Speaker 1: it is so good. Let's move on to Moto too.
- 42:59Speaker 1: I just have to say, Jake Dixon, oh my god,
- 43:04Speaker 1: he did an alasiaus spargo catalunya. If you don't know
- 43:08Speaker 1: what we're talking about, he thought the race finished a
- 43:10Speaker 1: lap early. Now he's gone on socials and said it
- 43:14Speaker 1: was a technical error on his dash. He's not blaming
- 43:17Speaker 1: his team, it's just it is what it is. But man, like,
- 43:21Speaker 1: don't they have pitboards. There's multiple ways of communicating this.
- 43:25Speaker 1: I swear there's even a screen on that sign that
- 43:28Speaker 1: goes There's got to be so many ways that he
- 43:30Speaker 1: could see that there's still one more lap to go.
- 43:34Speaker 2: See, this is where we need I'm saying this very
- 43:36Speaker 2: tongue in cheek here, this is where we need a
- 43:38Speaker 2: Pitza rider radio, which is going to happen in the future.
- 43:41Speaker 2: It's like, Jake, you're on the second last lap. Don't stop. No,
- 43:43Speaker 2: I'm joking, that's that might be coming dad of the tracks.
- 43:46Speaker 2: You gotta be careful what you wish for. But when
- 43:48Speaker 2: you saw him come out of that last quarter and
- 43:51Speaker 2: I'm thinking, why is he pushing for the finish light
- 43:52Speaker 2: here that he crosses the line and sort of slightly
- 43:54Speaker 2: sits up in Cocotte though he's done the Elasian Catalonia
- 43:58Speaker 2: a couple of years ago, so he at least got
- 44:01Speaker 2: back on it, but chucked a podium away because of it.
- 44:04Speaker 2: And as you say, it was more message on his
- 44:06Speaker 2: dash because a lot of the dashboards on these bikes
- 44:10Speaker 2: and even the circuits timing tower where there'll be a
- 44:12Speaker 2: countdown with how many laps there are to go, and
- 44:16Speaker 2: it sounded like the dash was incorrect the entire race,
- 44:21Speaker 2: so it was probably one lap ahead of itself, so
- 44:23Speaker 2: super unlucky for him. But this is more than I
- 44:27Speaker 2: expected to talk about Moto two on this week's podcast.
- 44:30Speaker 2: I must admit because once center Ageus and Harry Voy
- 44:34Speaker 2: were both out on the first lap, I must admit
- 44:36Speaker 2: I did kind of push the chair out and went
- 44:39Speaker 2: put the kettle on and did a few errands and
- 44:41Speaker 2: stuff and just tried to half watch what was going
- 44:43Speaker 2: on for the rest of that race and came back
- 44:44Speaker 2: for the end. Because the Aussie involvement was significantly shorter
- 44:49Speaker 2: than the last sentence.
- 44:50Speaker 1: I've just said, let's just say that, you know, it
- 44:52Speaker 1: was such a shame for both of those guys, and
- 44:56Speaker 1: I heard after the race center was not obviously happy
- 44:59Speaker 1: as expected to be. But if you are just speaking
- 45:03Speaker 1: of Cener, if you wanted to know what a dash
- 45:05Speaker 1: looks like on a Moto two bike, head to our
- 45:07Speaker 1: YouTube channel because we did a behind the scenes garage
- 45:10Speaker 1: tour with Senna and you can see the size of
- 45:12Speaker 1: this thing. I'm doing the hand signals now is well
- 45:16Speaker 1: smaller than an iPhone. And you think the riding on
- 45:18Speaker 1: there is they've got I mean, Moto GP bikes are
- 45:21Speaker 1: even different. But they'll have tire temperature, bike temperature, they'll
- 45:24Speaker 1: have their uppm, they'll have gears, they'll have all these
- 45:26Speaker 1: little messages on there, and then somewhere on there's meant
- 45:29Speaker 1: to fit in how many laps they've got. So obviously
- 45:32Speaker 1: it's easy to understand how this error can be made
- 45:34Speaker 1: and how we don't see it more often. But well,
- 45:37Speaker 1: there's little dashes that they have on their bikes are tiny.
- 45:41Speaker 1: But yes, I agree with you, there was some battles
- 45:43Speaker 1: up the front, but look, it wasn't It wasn't the
- 45:47Speaker 1: most exciting race called a Cpny get the win, and
- 45:50Speaker 1: obviously Navarro and then Jake's teammate Gervera got third place
- 45:55Speaker 1: and obviously ultimately put him on the podium. I think
- 45:57Speaker 1: is also his first World championship. Proto sighting for Aspar
- 46:02Speaker 1: and everything that's going on in Valencia, we know that
- 46:04Speaker 1: there's a big connection as the team of base there.
- 46:07Speaker 1: So a good weekend for Aspar in that sense that
- 46:10Speaker 1: they had one of their riders in Moto two and
- 46:12Speaker 1: then obviously in Moto three, that really beautiful sentimental statement
- 46:18Speaker 1: from David Alonso after where he said he's going to
- 46:20Speaker 1: donate all his bonuses from winning this weekend. Who's obviously
- 46:25Speaker 1: achieved another goal of winning basically every round this year
- 46:29Speaker 1: in Moto three, but that was really nice I thought
- 46:33Speaker 1: of him to do that. At the end, they took
- 46:36Speaker 1: the oath of not celebrating in honor of Valencia. But
- 46:39Speaker 1: the battle with Frosato, you could just see him in
- 46:43Speaker 1: park firm mate. At the end, he was like, mate, mate.
- 46:46Speaker 2: Just give me one win. He he just ticks every box.
- 46:52Speaker 2: This kid, doesn't he a lot. So like he's got
- 46:54Speaker 2: the speed, he's got the charisma, he's got the wisdom
- 46:57Speaker 2: of someone much older than he actually he's eighteen years old,
- 47:01Speaker 2: and you you know, he's doing all these post race
- 47:03Speaker 2: interviews and what have you not in his native language.
- 47:06Speaker 2: There's just a world sort of wise aspect to him
- 47:09Speaker 2: that I really like to go with the talent. But yeah,
- 47:12Speaker 2: you're right about him winning nearly everything, six wins in
- 47:15Speaker 2: a row in Moto three, which is almost silly to
- 47:17Speaker 2: say because of how crazily impossible that series is. Thirteen
- 47:21Speaker 2: winners for the season. Like, he's the next guy. I'm
- 47:23Speaker 2: absolutely convinced of it. But there's a combination of personality
- 47:27Speaker 2: and talent and just I don't know, I don't know
- 47:30Speaker 2: about you watching him, but he doesn't come across as
- 47:32Speaker 2: your standard eighteen year old, does he He he's much
- 47:34Speaker 2: much wiser than that, and I think it's going to
- 47:36Speaker 2: really really help him as he moves up the food chain.
- 47:39Speaker 1: It's like I feel like I've said this on a
- 47:40Speaker 1: previous podcast, It's like, with the visor open, he's this happy,
- 47:44Speaker 1: go lucky kid, really bubbly and vibrant. He puts the
- 47:48Speaker 1: visor down and he just turns into.
- 47:52Speaker 2: Animal animal.
- 47:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so cool to see, right, And like you said,
- 47:57Speaker 1: he's the next Pedro Costa, Mark Marquez. I think if
- 48:01Speaker 1: he goes well in seasons, doesn't get too many injuries,
- 48:05Speaker 1: maintains this progression that he's going through, it won't be
- 48:08Speaker 1: long and we'll be seeing him in MotoGP and hopefully
- 48:11Speaker 1: it's still at a time where Mark Marquez is there
- 48:13Speaker 1: and Pedio Acosta's fighting for the world championship and then
- 48:15Speaker 1: we have this young rookie come in. Talk about Fabio's
- 48:18Speaker 1: back at front. Oh, it's going to be exciting in
- 48:21Speaker 1: the years to come, but sure it is. Let's talk
- 48:24Speaker 1: about Joe kelsorry because he got P six which is good,
- 48:28Speaker 1: and then Jacob rules in twelve. So a weekend where
- 48:31Speaker 1: Jacob finally scored some points. So I feel like that's
- 48:34Speaker 1: the confidence he needs to finish off this year on
- 48:36Speaker 1: a bit more of a high.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Yeah, agreed. I mean, it was good to see him
- 48:40Speaker 2: do reasonably well in Australia and he's kind of righted
- 48:43Speaker 2: the ship a little bit because it was getting a
- 48:44Speaker 2: bit rocky for him after Germany when he'd had that
- 48:46Speaker 2: accident mid season. So we know that he's back there
- 48:49Speaker 2: next season again and has got the continuity in the stability.
- 48:52Speaker 2: So finishing off with a good couple of results is
- 48:55Speaker 2: key for him. Still not doing a great job in qualifying.
- 48:58Speaker 2: I have to say, it's twentieth on the grid, so
- 49:00Speaker 2: gave himself a fair bit to do, but got through
- 49:02Speaker 2: to twelfth. And it was another very Joel Kelso race,
- 49:05Speaker 2: wasn't it really qualifying the front two rows lead for
- 49:08Speaker 2: a bit, fight at the front, drop back a little
- 49:10Speaker 2: bit in the last couple of laps and bank another
- 49:12Speaker 2: top six, which just feels like pretty much every race.
- 49:15Speaker 2: So look, it's it'd be frustrating for him that he
- 49:18Speaker 2: can't take that next step. And it's not even a
- 49:19Speaker 2: big step, it's a small step. He's right there, but
- 49:23Speaker 2: he Now it's funny, isn't it perceptions with Joel, Like
- 49:26Speaker 2: in the past you go, oh, Joel Kelso's up the front,
- 49:28Speaker 2: that's good, and now it's like Joel Kelsop's up at
- 49:31Speaker 2: the front because of course Joel Kelso's up the front.
- 49:33Speaker 2: We just expect that. So you know, he has raised
- 49:36Speaker 2: the expectations of what we think he can do on
- 49:39Speaker 2: a week to week basis. He's so close just to
- 49:41Speaker 2: getting that next big breakthrough result. He's had a poll.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Now he's been right at the front most of the season,
- 49:46Speaker 2: So let's hope the Errata doesn't need to progress too much.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Just a little bit, just just a little bit.
- 49:51Speaker 1: We'd like to see Joel take his maiden Moto three victory.
- 49:54Speaker 1: I mean, he could do that a Valencia. We know
- 49:56Speaker 1: he's strong there, but it could be next year with
- 49:58Speaker 1: a new team as well. But what I thought was
- 50:00Speaker 1: interesting before we finalized our Malaysian recap was in Moto
- 50:04Speaker 1: III those Hondas, was there a problem with them overheating
- 50:07Speaker 1: or the engines blowing? And then I saw on socials
- 50:11Speaker 1: Alisha Spargo struggling with the heat on the Apillius, which
- 50:14Speaker 1: we know, so it's got to be so challenging for
- 50:17Speaker 1: these riders, and obviously the Bianks who come from phillip
- 50:20Speaker 1: Island where it's freezing down then and they go back
- 50:23Speaker 1: into Asia where it's hot and humid. Just the equipment
- 50:28Speaker 1: and what they're dealing with, and these writers and the
- 50:30Speaker 1: because the track temperature for a Moto GP was something
- 50:33Speaker 1: like fifty or sixty degrees, right, fifty.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Four degrees started degrees.
- 50:37Speaker 1: That's freaking hot.
- 50:39Speaker 2: Yeah, it's crazy, isn't it you think? And they kind
- 50:41Speaker 2: of got away with it. At burram On Race takes
- 50:43Speaker 2: it rained right, so we didn't get that super hot
- 50:45Speaker 2: race in Thailand. What was weird about Sunday at Sepang
- 50:49Speaker 2: was you know that the ambient there is going to
- 50:51Speaker 2: be really high, but you normally get that afternoon cloud
- 50:53Speaker 2: cover that takes some of the edge off it. You
- 50:55Speaker 2: think of TV pictures of Sipang, Normally it's dry and
- 50:58Speaker 2: it's hot, but it's not super bright because you don't
- 51:01Speaker 2: often get that crazy sun light there because the clouds
- 51:03Speaker 2: are starting to roll in. Sunday was the brightest day
- 51:06Speaker 2: of the weekend. And that also might be the hottest
- 51:09Speaker 2: pit laid in the history of mankind because it's all
- 51:11Speaker 2: that white, polished concrete. And I've stood out there through
- 51:14Speaker 2: pre season testing a few times and I'm not even
- 51:16Speaker 2: doing anything. I'm not riding wearing leathers and riding motorbikes,
- 51:19Speaker 2: And after about twenty minutes, I'm like, yeah, I think
- 51:21Speaker 2: that's enough of that. I'll go back in the air con.
- 51:24Speaker 2: So God knows what those guys were going through on Sunday,
- 51:27Speaker 2: and that Aprillier does run hot, and yeah, by the
- 51:29Speaker 2: end of it, Alisia Spargo, we know he's retiring. In
- 51:33Speaker 2: one raceist time. I think if someone had said the
- 51:35Speaker 2: offensive retiring like now that exact moment, he probably would
- 51:38Speaker 2: have said, yeah, I'll be up for that, because he
- 51:40Speaker 2: looked absolutely shot after the race, and he's one of
- 51:43Speaker 2: the fitter guys with he's cycling at what have you.
- 51:45Speaker 2: So yeah, super big test of those guys.
- 51:47Speaker 1: I just thought, then, how cool is it that motor
- 51:50Speaker 1: GP is going back to Catalonia, his home track. He's
- 51:56Speaker 1: literally borne the town next to it, that's where he
- 51:58Speaker 1: grew up, and that's going to be his final race.
- 52:00Speaker 1: I just thought of that. I thought, Wow, that's got to.
- 52:03Speaker 2: Be cool for a lash right full circle moment, And
- 52:06Speaker 2: funnily enough, he's actually, well, maybe not funnier, he's really
- 52:10Speaker 2: really good there. You know, he's won Sprint Series, one
- 52:12Speaker 2: Grand Prix there, he won Sprint there this year, so
- 52:15Speaker 2: you know, Priory is kind of in nowhere for the
- 52:17Speaker 2: back half of the season. But the change of venue
- 52:19Speaker 2: for Barcelona for this final round, his final round in
- 52:22Speaker 2: the World Championship, it might see him and Maverick Vidale,
- 52:26Speaker 2: they're both pretty good there. We might see a bit
- 52:28Speaker 2: of a return to see Exibit Prilli as up towards
- 52:30Speaker 2: the front again, because we've not said that very often
- 52:32Speaker 2: in the back half of this year, have we well
- 52:34Speaker 2: fingers crossed.
- 52:35Speaker 1: But we're going to keep you guys up to date
- 52:37Speaker 1: as soon as we get confirmation, the official confirmation from
- 52:40Speaker 1: Donna as to when the exact dates are for the
- 52:44Speaker 1: final Moto GP round, So keep an eye out on
- 52:47Speaker 1: our Fox socials for that at Fox Motorsport, or you
- 52:51Speaker 1: can keep up to date with all the latest news
- 52:53Speaker 1: on our website at foxsports dot com to au forward

- 53:10Speaker 1: Clayton and myself Ronita vmillen. We're going to be back
- 53:13Speaker 1: soon with more Moto GP Pittock
