- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I am back for another episode of the Tailgate Cam podcast.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And today's episode, we are going to go through UFC 330 that took place last night.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Talk about the two title fights that occurred on that fight card.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Talk about a little matchmaking, some fights we'd like to see based off those results.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Also diving into some of the future upcoming fight cards, both fight nights.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: There's a UFC Noche event taking place in September.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And then also UFC 331.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: We have that full card announced.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And then the main card from UFC 333 and a few of the other main prelims got announced last night during the during the fight.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: So me and my guests are going to go through all those.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: But first, let's hit a few headlines.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Um, the two big ones that I want to start with, Cardinals rookie outfielder Joshua Baez did not only set a record for his own career, did not only set a record for the St.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Louis Cardinals, but set an MLB record, a game that has been played for over 120 years.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: In his debut over the weekend on Saturday, Joshua Baez hit three home runs.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Not only did he hit three home runs, he hit three home runs in his first three career MLB at bats at Wrigley Field, the Cardinals' biggest rival.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Um he was able to hit a home run on the first pitch he saw, even in the first inning, driving one to left field, right field, and center field.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And really an incredible display for that rookie starting his career in the most unforgettable way possible with three home runs.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna get to this fight in detail when I have my guests join me a little later on.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: And that is Islam Mahachev, who ended up extending his winning streak to now a UFC record, 17 consecutive fights, breaking Anderson Silva's record previously of 16.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: So two major milestones occurred over the weekend.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Joshua Baez of the St.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Louis Cardinals, Islam Mahachev from the welterweight division in the UFC.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: But let's get to a little bit of news and notes around MLB.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: We saw the Brewers and the Dodgers take on each other, and the Brewers took three of four from the Dodgers, and now suddenly the Brewers are back up two and a half games on the Dodgers for the best record in the National League, and two games up on the Rays.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, while the Brewers were doing some winning, the Rays were doing some losing, and the Rays got swept over the weekend.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Three consecutive losses to the Baltimore Orioles, who continue to find power in the form of first baseman Pete Alonzo.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Their AL East rivals, the Blue Jays and the Yankees, faced off.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: The Yankees could only manage to score one run Friday and one run Saturday.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: And if you know Yankees baseball, that's about par for the course recently.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: The Yankees lose two out of three, ended up salvaging a game in extra innings on Sunday with a two-run home run from Ben Rice to win it in extras, but ultimately lose the series.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: And Toronto now has won 13 of their last 18 games.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: They continue to stay very hot, pitching very well, despite not getting any real production from their star and highest paid player, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: A very big series in the AL Central race right now, which saw now the AL Central leaders, the Chicago White Sox sweeping the Detroit Tigers, continuing to see great power in all three games.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Miguel Vargas hit a couple home runs.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Colson Montgomery hit a few home runs.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Moneta Morkami hit another home run.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: They love hitting home runs, and they swept their AL Central rivals, Detroit Tigers, and now moved to five and a half games up for sole possession of first plays in the AL Central.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And lastly, in the AL East, we talked about the Rays, we talked about the Yankees, the Orioles, and the Blue Jays.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: That leaves us with the Red Sox, who came into this series having lost five of their last six and having dropped their last two series.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Things did not get any better from the Red Sox this weekend, losing uh the first game on Friday night, and then after a lengthy delay on Sunday, about three hours in weather delay, they dropped the series finale and lose the series to the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh, staying in Pennsylvania.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: The Phillies take a three-game sweep, but they don't start that series in Philadelphia.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: They started that series in Dyersville, Iowa for the Field of Dreams game.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: The Phillies ended up taking three straight games from the Twins.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs in the Field of Dreams game, and Philly continues to march on, and they are now seven and a half games back of their NL East rivals, the Atlanta Braves, who were thoroughly dominated.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: It was one of my what to watch for for this weekend.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: That was the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Atlanta Braves series.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Arizona shut out Atlanta Friday.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: They ended up dropping 10 runs on the Braves on Saturday.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: And then ultimately the Braves were not up for the task of fighting back on Sunday, and Arizona sweeps the Braves.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: The Braves NL East lead is down to seven and a half games.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: After they drop three straight, the Phillies take three straight from the Twins.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: And we have some tighter contested division races.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: And the in the NL Central, we talked about the Brewers.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: The team that's been hot on their heels has been the Chicago Cubs, but they ended up losing two of the three games that they had against their hated rival, the St.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: Louis Cardinals.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Alec Burleson continues to drive in runs, continues to swing a hot bat.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: And we already talked about the history that was made with Joshua Baez.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: The Cardinals steal two out of three in Wrigley.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: The Cubs are now five games back in the NL Central.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: So when you're looking at some of these playoff standings for the National League, the closest race that we have right now is in the Central.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: The Cubs, as I mentioned, being five games back.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: The Padres have made a surgent run, having won eight of their last 10 games.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: They are seven games back, though, of the Dodgers, despite the Dodgers having lost three of four to the Brewers.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: It's like the Dodgers lead never gets closed.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: I already talked about the Phillies being seven and a half back.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: The Rangers, three games under 500, but stump somehow they're two and a half games back of the Houston Astros.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: It seems like nobody wants to win the AL West.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: That will be a one-team division, absolutely.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: As will the AL Central, while it seems like every team from the AL East, except for maybe the maybe the Orioles wants to get into the race.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: But it's a remainder to see how some of these tight division races shake out and really how this wild card race shakes out.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: So in the AL wildcard right now, we have the Yankees who are eight games up, the Red Sox who are five games up, and the Orioles who are in the last wild card spot as of today, ahead by half of a game over those Texas Rangers, and one game over their AL East foes, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Detroit Tigers.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Out of all of those teams that are kind of grouped behind the Yankees and the Red Sox, which I think both of those teams will make the playoffs, between the Orioles, the Rangers, the Blue Jays, and the Tigers, the only team out of there that I really think can make some noise is the Blue Jays.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: They still have the most experienced pitching staff.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: They have Dylan Sees, Shane Bieber.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: They traded for Jose Soriano.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Even after trading away Kevin Gossman at the trade deadline, I still think the Blue Jays out of that group of teams has the most realistic chance to make it.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Um, they have enough good hitters on that lineup to be able to get streaky if they ever can find a way to get some production from Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: The A'LEs could end up being a five-division team.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: So it it's interesting to really watch some of these races and see like how some of these could shake out because it is so close.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, we really are between three games from the Orioles, the Rangers, the Blue Jays, the Tigers, the Twins, the Guardians, all the way down to the Mariners, who are just three games back of that second wild card spot.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: So any of those teams could really really end up making it into that last wildcard spot.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: The only teams that are really a hundred percent out of it, the Kansas City Royals, the A's, and the LA Angels, who are all double digits back of that last wild card spot.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: And then in the NL, the Cubs, who are five games back of the Brewers, the Phillies and the Padres are tied for the last position.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: One game up on the Diamondbacks, three games up on the Marlins.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: And don't look now.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: The St.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Louis Cardinals embracing the youth movement.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: JJ Weatherholt has been up with the big league club all year, but now you have some of your younger guys, your Blaze Jordans, your um Joshua Baez's coming up to the big league club and starting to make a real impact.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Um, it'd be interesting to see if the Cardinals could continue to put everything together and really push for that last wild card spot.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: But from some of the trade deadline acquisitions, I would feel more confident in the Padres and the Phillies holding down those spots with a slight chance that the Diamondbacks could upset one of those teams for that position.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Now we have gotten our first full week of NFL football.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was kind of you know dumbed down version of NFL football.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: You know, nobody's really game planning, starters aren't really playing, they're definitely not playing the whole game.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: But we did have some takeaways that I think were worth mentioning, and that's their newcomers.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: My favorite thing always about preseason is seeing guys that may have, you know, been injured the year before and they're trying to come back, but mostly it's looking for those rookies.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: So we saw quite a few um pretty strong performances from some rookies across the NFL landscape over the weekend.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna start with the top end of the first round of the draft, and that is Fernando Mendoza.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: He got into the game against the Cardinals last week um and threw a touchdown.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: His first career NFL touchdown, he was 10 of 16, just under 100 yards.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: He had a scramble for like four or five yards as well, but he looked pretty good.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, it in Clint Kubak's system, I'm sure they weren't trying to throw too much against the wall in a preseason game that doesn't mean anything.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: But it was nice to see Fernando Bendoza look so comfortable, you know, looks so uh uh in control of the offense.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Um, he even audibled at one point on their first drive that he was in, and his touchdown throw, pretty nice throw.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Um, just a really good sign from a guy that um a lot of people are excited about in Vegas.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: So good, good showing there from Fernando Mendoza.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: And sticking with the top end of the draft, Jeremiah Love.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: He got the ball 14 times in their preseason game against the Raiders.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: He did not play at all in their first preseason game uh in the Hall of Fame game against the Panthers, but they made up for it.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: He played and got the ball 14 times, totaled 72 yards, had a couple nice explosive runs as well, over 10 yards.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Uh, but there was some injury news that came out of this that he did hurt his ankle.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Seemingly no risk that he will miss the regular season opener, but they did say that he is out of practice in training camp for at least a week, will not play in the second week uh preseason game, but a great performance nonetheless, very encouraging sign.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: And if you are targeting Jeremiah Love in Fantasy, if you already own Jeremiah Love and Fantasy, that's gotta be an encouraging sign.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: A guy that I have to toot the horn of is Jacoby Lane.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: He caught a touchdown in his preseason debut with the Baltimore Ravens.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: If you are on Twitter, if you're not on Twitter, unless you live under a rock and you don't know who Jacoby Lane is, this guy has been catching everything in practice.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: All the beat reporters from the Baltimore Ravens.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: The biggest one is Jamison Hensley, who's been covering the Ravens since I was a child.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: He's been touting Jacoby Lane's name all training camp.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: And he shows up, plays one regul one preseason game, catches a touchdown.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: The Commanders also saw their rookie running back, Katron Allen, get 85 yards and a touchdown.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Um, Ty Simpson talking about another first-round quarterback, the only other first-round quarterback I should say, had 21, uh, went 21 of 25 for 190 yards and managed to throw two touchdowns in his uh relief effort for Stetson Bennett against the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Uh, a funny note also was Keon Coleman was the first touchdown in the Bills' brand new High Mark Stadium.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Josh Allen started the game and ended up finding Keon Coleman in the back of the end zone at the start of that game on Saturday.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Pretty funny.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: A guy that most people have penciled in to be a cut candidate has actually broke the broke the grass first at high mark stadium.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: And then the the last thing that I actually want to shout out here is Todd Muncin um gave some comments after the Browns preseason game against the Bears on Saturday, saying that he was thrilled with Deshaun Watson's performance, despite the fact that Deshaun Watson got a pretty brutal strip sack, turned the ball over on fourth down.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Um, but if Munken says he's thrilled with Deshaun Watson's performance that quickly, it's got to be a telltale sign that Deshaun Watson's gonna be their first week starter against the Jags.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: And last but not least, I can't talk about preseason football and not mention my Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Cam Little, he's the best kicker in the NFL.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: I know people will say my guy Brandon Arden will say that it's his kicker, Brandon Aubrey, but it's clearly Cam Little.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: He set the NFL record last year with his 68-yard field goal to win a game or to go into halftime against the Raiders.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: He just is so consistent.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: That guy is awesome.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: He showed up, knocked down two field goals on uh their Saturday preseason game, knocked down all of his extra points.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Shout out to Cam Little and his bleach blonde dyed hair.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Coming up, we have a special guest, my good friend Pedro Rivera, joining us to talk all things UFC.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: We cannot wait to break that down with Pedro, go through all things UFC with him, get into the fights from UFC 330, some of the upcoming fight cards, and then uh some matchmaking.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Let's do some hypothetical matchmaking with Pedro as well, get into some fights we'd like to see.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: Stick around.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: The Tailgate podcast is excited to welcome in its newest guest, a good friend of mine.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Probably, I would say, in in the people that I talk to the most, the official of UFC opinions, uh, amongst my friends.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: So that is none other than Pedrizzi.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Pedro.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Uh Pedro, go ahead and introduce yourself.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: Tell us a little bit about you, what sports you like, something fun about you.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so my name is Pedro.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, I've been watching UFC since uh I think I was like 12 years old.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: So, you know, back back in the day where like Tito Ortiz, uh Iceman Chuck Liddell, all those guys were fighting.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, but loved it ever since.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: I grew up on boxing, so it kind of led to the UFC.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: Uh but yeah, no, I think my big three sports are uh football, obviously, big Jags fan.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Um I like uh basketball, Celtics fan, and UFC.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: So those are my three sports I keep up with the most.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Um so the reason Pedro's joining us today is obviously we've already teased a little bit in the episode about UFC 330, and Pedro and I actually were able to watch 330 together last night, and maybe not before we even start a recording, maybe not the most exciting fight card of the year.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Um, but two belts are up for grabs, and I think there's a lot of fights because of this card that we can kind of look forward to.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: So let's just start with the main event Islam Mahachev versus Ian Machado Gary for the welterweight title.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Initial thoughts right away when the fight ended, or maybe like the day after now about that fight.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Like is were you more impressed with Islam or more disappointed in Ian?
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: I think I'm I'm more impressed with uh Gary and the type of fight that he put up because uh if you know Islam, he's gonna take you down, he's gonna control you, and he's he's gonna either submit you or beat you until until you give up.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: Um but Gary, I think, handled the grappling of Islam really well.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: Um I think it still wasn't enough, obviously, to get the win.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, but it was a lot closer than I thought.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: I think I think he's had a lot of tools, and I think uh he's only 28, so he's got a lot of uh you know potential moving forward.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: I think he can get back up to the top.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: What did you think?
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh I I I was impressed by Gary's takedown defense through most of the fight.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Like, kind of like you said, like if you fight anybody from Habib's camp, you have to expect that your legs and your arms are gonna get a workout trying to keep them off of you.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: And for the most part, like I mean, while they were in the clinch the majority of the fight, he wasn't really getting taken down or really in bad positions much, which I thought that alone was a good sign for how close the fight was.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my my other real takeaway is that it's just hard to beat those guys, like the team Habib, it it's hard to beat those guys.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: I saw a stat this morning that Habib's roster, including himself, is 109-2 in the UFC.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: So Islam lost his second fight in the UFC, which is one of those losses, and Umar Nemagamedoff is the only other one of his team that has a loss.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: I I'm just curious, like when you look at that style of fighting, is there like a style approach that people could take?
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: Or like how do you conquer the Dagestani army, if you will?
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think those are the like that whole camp, you cannot out game plan those guys.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: So if you go in, you're gonna have to take some risks.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Like you're gonna have to go for it.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: And I think that's a really good hurt Gary in this fight.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: I think if he pulled out if he pulled out you know some missions, uh maybe maybe some some more striking uh just went for it more.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, not trying to fight so much for the points, I think that would have done him really well because um like I said, I think I think the fight was a lot closer than the just had it.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: I had it uh I think I had it too going into the the fifth.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: Because uh in the fourth round when uh uh Islam had him up against the clinch, against the cage, Gary did most of the damage, even though he was being grappled.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: If you look at the uh at Islam's face at the start of round four, compared to the end, he took most of his damage in that round and he was grappling with Gary, but like the first thing you judge on is damage.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: So I I I I think I think if he would have came up a little more aggressive and threw a little more caution of a way, I think it that's how you beat those guys.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: Like you cannot uh pray to take into a decision.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: You can't you can't pray to just stick to your gameplay.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: You have to be outside your comfort zone and do those guys.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Two of the biggest Contenders to you know kind of step up now that Ian Gary has gotten his shot.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: We're both in the front row last night, and that's Carlos Protez and Michael Morales.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Do you think who I guess who do you think is more deserving of the initial shot to go after Islam between Protez and Morales?
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: I think you can't go wrong with either of them.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Um I know that Morales has to cut a lot of weight.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: That he's a big dude.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: That's that's why I would like to see him in there over Protez because uh I Islam struggled against Gary at the grappling.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: Like he got the win, but Gary's a big dude, not as big as Morales.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: Morales is easily could be a light heavyweight.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Like that guy looks for that 205, you know?
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: He cuts a ton of weight.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: So I think seeing that size matchup along with the knockout power that Morales has, I think would match up really well with Islam.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: And I think he's the type of guy that's gonna go in there and try to go for the kill and not wait for Islam to make the first move and get in his range.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: So I think I would give it to Morales um and and let Protez fight somebody else.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: Uh maybe he can do the rematch against uh Ian Gary.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: You know, um to get that number one contender spot.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: I I think that a rematch between Protest and Gary kind of sets up well right now.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: But the only other thing is last night, I don't know if you saw after the fights, Ian like went over to like congratulate Islam and the whole number Khib team, and Morales was in the alleyway of the tunnel, and he was like trying to talk to Morales, and Morales started trying to fight him in the tunnel, so maybe they were just trying to start drama for another fight or something.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: But I could see them being set up to fight and protest fighting Islam after this as well.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: But either way, I mean the Dagestanis get to keep some more gold and get in another title fight after this.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Um, there was another title on the line as well last night, the women's straw weight division, a pretty dominant fight.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: But one of the things that you and I even said during the fight is like who's gonna beat McKenzie Dern?
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Because like the straw weight division and kind of just the state of UFC women is pretty down right now.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: And some of that, like you can even tell from how interested people were to watch Rhonda Rousey come out of retirement because there is such a lack of star power in the women's class in the UFC.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: First, initial thoughts on the Dern fight, and then we'll get into like the roster side of it.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: But initial thoughts like, were you impressed with McKenzie Dern or just more disappointed with Jillian Robertson?
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: No, I think I was impressed by McKenzie Dern.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh she she went in there and knew what she had to do.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: She she grappled a good grappler, like Jillian Robertson is a really good grappler in her own right.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Um she actually tapped Rose at some like DJ J competition, like I think it was like last year or the year before.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: So wow.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's got some credentials and she's beat some good names, but yeah, Mackenzie got in there and did what she had to do.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, was it exciting?
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: No.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: Uh, but she did what she had to do.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: She she dominated and and got it done.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: You know, not much to say about it.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I completely agree.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: I think it was a you know, one of those she brought her lunch pail to work, got it done.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, kind of it almost felt like she was like doing the yawn emoji, like during the fight.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Like, oh, like I'm just here, you know, in top control for four minutes every round, and she obviously got to retain her belt.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: Um, any other like notable performances from the main card?
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: I obviously Edson Barboza retiring kind of stood out.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Um and then Stolfoots uh upset in in that fourth fight.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Anything like really stand out to you from the main card or any of the other fights on that card last night?
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: From the main card, uh specifically, I think the feature fight, Jalen Turner, uh coming in and beating you know Kyle Fernandez, uh just knocking him out.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: I think it was like in what 39 seconds, um, ran right through that man.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: And I think going into it, uh he was either an underdog or a take-em fight.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Uh that was really impressive to me because he's been through a lot of things in his career.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: He he retired at one point after losing to Waikano, saying he didn't want to fight anymore, comes back, has a couple fights, you know, up and down, but he came in and looked like a brand new fighter.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: So I I I think he's gonna be on a good track, and I like to see what he does going forward.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he definitely I don't know if he did he get the fight of the night bonus.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: I didn't see if he did or not, but that knockout that he had was so impressive, so fast.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: It definitely felt like it was the younger the we were joking about the younger prospect version of Jalen Turner.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um by what 32 years old or something.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: Crazy, crazy.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I think the bonuses went to, if I remember correctly, they went to Jeremiah Wells, um, who opened up the uh the the fight night with uh insane submission on Mural Tech Orobai.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: Um that guy was uh Orbai was a minus 1200.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Like that is insane.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: So for him to come in and he was getting beat, he was down two rounds.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Comes up and gets a sneaky little anaconda choke on him, chokes the man out, lays him out in the middle of the octagon.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: It was insane in front of his hometown, by the way.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: He's from Philly, so uh he's like 40 years old, so all the odds were against him, but he got it done, so he deserves that bonus.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: Uh Charles Johnson, uh he got a really he got a hundred K bonus as well.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: So he he got a bonus.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: He stepped up against uh Chapeline.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: Uh I didn't really know much about Chaplin, but he looks like a little boy.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: Like he's built like a 12-year-old.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: So I was like, oh, this guy, like this, I'm not taking this guy seriously, but uh he was throwing some haymakers, like he rocked Charles Johnson a couple of times, and uh he earned my respect, but Charles Johnson got it, you know, pulled pulled uh pulled the win out.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: So he that was another submission.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: It was a twister.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Uh so crazy.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: Seeing those, like, I don't know how they work, honestly.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: I've been watching UFC for so many years.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: I don't know how those twisters work, but yeah, uh it's so impressive when you you can just pull that out on another professional fighter.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: So shout out to Charles Johnson.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: But those are the two that stuck out the most to me.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that Charles Johnson uh submission is a great call out.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: I completely forgot about that.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: Um that's a that's a great call out.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: Any any anything else stand out to you before we just chat real quick about some of the upcoming events?
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: Anything else stand out to you that you want to mention on this fight card from last night?
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: Um no.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think it was a great fight night card.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: I I think the coming and main event kind of like you know put a little dent in it.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: But yeah, um, I I I think the supporting fights uh in the card like just completely carry the card.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: So um I think I gave it like a solid seven.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: The crowd was was into it the whole time.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: So it was it was a lot of fun.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Honestly, like I think both from like a fan perspective and and I'm talking about fans that are in the building, but also from like the UFC's perspective for Dana and Hunter.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: I don't think that they really care if the main event and the co-main event aren't as exciting, if all the other fights are great, because they're in the fight business, they just want the fights to be good.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: They're not really that's worried about them once you're there enjoying the fights, the fights kind of go how they may.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: And he says that all the time like guys get hurt, like things happen, fights can end quick or go long.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: So I I completely agree.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Like there were the the opening fights on the main event or the main card, excuse me, were tremendous.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: Um, and there were some great performances on the other undercard, too.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: Um, just another another great night in the UFC.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: So we have a few good headliners coming up in UFC fight nights.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: Next week we have Anthony Hernandez fighting Gregory Rodriguez and the week after, a fight that I am very excited for.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: Umar Namagamedov, who we just talked about, is fighting Songgy Dong in Shanghai.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Um, before we talk about Noche 331 or 333, either of those draw your eyes?
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I think uh Anthony Hernandez and uh Gregory Rodriguez, Robocop as they call him.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, I think it's gonna be a great fight.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: I I think uh it's gonna be a knockout.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: So if you like fireworks, stay tuned for that one.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: Uh they're both coming off of losses.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: Uh no, no.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: Rodriguez won his last fight.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Uh Bluffy Hernandez lost his last fight against uh Sean Strickland.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: Uh Strickland went to the body, got him down, but uh they're both they're both like all gas, no breaks.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: So I definitely tune into that one.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: So after those two uh fight night events, the traditional UFC you know filler events between our pay-per-views, we have uh an event that the UFC's been doing for I think five, I think this is the fifth iteration of the UFC Noche.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: And that card, if you haven't looked at it yet, for anybody listening, it is a pretty stacked card.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: The main event we have Gene Silva and Yair Rodriguez, uh Co Maine, Brandon Marino, Joseph Morales.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: We also have Manon Farreau and Alexa Grasso fighting on that card, Waldo Cortez Acosta, Curtis Blades, Dan Ige is on this card as well.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's a lot of good even Bajamundes, a guy we were talking about last night, is on the prelims.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, for UFC Noche, like that is a really exciting card.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: Um, anything there that you're particularly keeping your eyes on for UFC Noche?
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think uh, you know, heavyweight, the I think the heavyweight division right now has been probably at its lowest, uh, you know, talent-wise, but uh it's coming back up now.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: Uh Lonos, Ortez, uh Cortez Acosta, and Curtis Blades, I think it's gonna be a really high-level fight.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: Um they both like to box.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: Curtis is a great grappler, but he's been leaning on his boxing a lot more.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: Um but Cortez Acosta has got a uh kind of a tear, so um, I think that'll be the fight to watch, the one I'll be you know definitely tuned into, other than the main event, obviously.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: Uh Yeri Rodriguez has been gone a minute.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: So uh I'm interested to see how he looks uh against John Silva.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: You everybody knows John Silva, that guy's a psycho.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Um he's he's all out that action.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: So um when you got a guy with a barcode tattoo on the back of his neck, you do not want to fight that guy.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited to see how that goes.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: But yeah, you're right, the card's stacked.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: And speaking of stacked cards, uh one one other thing I want to get to with you while we have some more time is the two numbered events that we've gotten kind of rounded out.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: So we got the full card the other day for 331, and then during 330 last night, we got the main card for UFC 333 in a few of the prelims as well.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: So we can start with 331, um, which is taking place in Crypto Arena in LA.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: And they have not UFC has not had an event in LA since 2018.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: Um, and this event 331 will be September 19th at Crypto.com Arena, headlining Joshua Van and Alexander Pantoja, who are rematching after they fought a couple years ago.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: Pantoja broke his arm in the beginning moments of the second round.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: Um, Arman is taking on Mauricio Ruffy after his wild knockout of the UFC White House event.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: Um, Patricio Pitbull and Doho Choi are on this card.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Brian Ortega is even on this card.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: Um Marlon Vera, Charles Jordain.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's even your boy Shuey is on this uh 331 card.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: Um anything that you're you're really interested to see here, like from a fight perspective or like how it could shake up a division.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, first of all, I think I think top to bottom, this is probably the most stat card of the year.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: Not just off the main card alone, but even the prelims and the early prelims.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: You got you got you got fighters that can headline fight nights on e on the early prelims, like you know, the the Marlin Vera and Tall Zerning fight.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: I could see that being a fight night main event, you know, oh for sure on a random ass like Saturday.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, but yeah, I I I think uh this is gonna be one you want to clear your calendar for.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm it's I'm excited to see Joshua Van get in there and Two of Pantoja looks like because Pantoja's reign over the flyweight division has been probably you know one of the best I've seen in history.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, the way the way that fight ended, uh this just wasn't good.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: But Joshua Van has defended the title since Pantoja's been gone.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, so he he he's already put it up against uh I think it was Tatsuro Tyra.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: Uh he defended his dog against Tatsuro Tyra, and that was a really good uh fight.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: So I I I'm leaning Van.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: What do you what do you think about that fight?
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm I'm really excited to see that.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: Um I you know, I I was a big fan of Pantoja before the arm injury.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: I was just trying, has he fought since that injury?
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Is this his first fight?
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, first fight back.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: That's crazy.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: I was thinking that, and then for a second, I was like, there's no way he's just jumping right back into Joshua Van, but it seems like that is the case.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, first off, I guess I'm most excited now, realizing that that I'm I just want to see what Pantoja looks like off of that much of a layoff.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: Um but those are two of like in terms of the amount of strikes per round that they unleash on their opponent, two of the best in that division, and really all the UFC.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: Um, I just want to see some wild exchanges point down to the mat and let's get it on, which both of those guys are very capable of.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: Um and and the other fight that I am excited about, we talked I mentioned it in the intro to the card, is Ruff.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: Um I I was super impressed by Ruffy at the White House event.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: Um, he it just seems like he has that kind of you know swagger, that aura about him that the UFC really gravitates to and likes to put those guys towards the end of big fight cards.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: And it feels like a good spot for him where he could almost have the performance of the night under a Van and Pantoja fight.
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: Um, I'd like to see him get another knockout against a very capable competitor in Armin.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: Um I I would say that that's probably the fight that I'm most excited about on the card, but I'm really interested to see the the way Pantoja responds, the way he looks after a layoff.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: Um the UFC just pulls me in with these numbered events, man.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Like I'm I'm in.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: Like, if there was a ticket that I had to buy, I'd be buying it.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Thank God we don't have to do that anymore.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Um I'm I'm excited for the event as a whole.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: And then that gets us to our newest piece of news, and that is UFC 333, which they and dropped on us last night during the main card.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: One of the greatest UFC fighters of all time in the featherweight class, and that is Alexander Volkanovsky fighting Molsar.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: We also have Peter Jan in the Bantamweight division fighting Mirab Dava Shili, uh Lanier Kavanaugh.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen this guy that he's fighting before.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Timorov, do you know much about him?
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: Timorov, no, I don't know a ton about him.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: I know he's funny, UFC before, but um, I I don't I don't know too much about him.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: Well, Kavanaugh, another guy that's kind of riding this momentum that he has right now, um, just had a pretty electric knockout and like a celebration, like a whole you know, social media storm that he put on after his last fight.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: Um and then Dominic Rez, Grant Dawson, um, and we also see uh Aaron Pico, Arnold Allen on this card, Nikita Krylov.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: There's a ton of big names on this fight card, but it's got the heavy at the top with uh Volk and Mavzar and Jan and Marab.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: Between those two um championship fights, is there one that you are more interested to see than the other?
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: Just a quick note.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: Uh Loner is coming off the loss to Brandon Ray While.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: Um that was his last fight.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he he got choked out uh round three, but um loaner was riding a lot of um a lot of momentum coming into that fight.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, good call.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: Good call.
- 38:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I think for 333, uh one of my favorite fighters of all time is Wolf.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Um and and the fact that he's still doing it at this age, um, especially after those two Islam Bakach losses coming off those, and then coming back and getting your title back.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: Like that that that's one of my goats right there.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: So um I'll be rooting for him, but uh I honestly the fight I'm more excited for is uh Peter Yan and Murab.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: Um we seen him fight before the first time, it wasn't too exciting.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of Murab holding Yan down.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: We saw him get the rematch, Peter Young got it back against them, and it was a really exciting fight, so I'm hoping it's uh same deal.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: But um Morab and Peter are are two great fighters, some of my favorite fighters.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: So if I had to pick one, it's my favorite poly Peter Yan just because of the striking, but uh Morab doesn't get tired, man.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: So yeah, they call him they call him the machine for a reason, but uh those are those are gonna be the those two fights are there, you know, will carry the card alone.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, that that's a great call out.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: Um I I was I think I told you this last night.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Jan was one of my favorite fighters, and I feel like he probably had one of the hardest losses to recover from when he suffered that disqualification against Algernon Sterling.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Um I think it just really set his career back.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: You know, when you get taken out of that main event spotlight and you have to really work your way back up, it just really, you know, put him in some unfavorable matchups, and then he had to take some fights that I don't think he would have had to take um had he been the champion.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: Um and it and it really put him in a in a bad spot.
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: So I I completely agree.
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: I'm very excited to see Jan back defending his belt again against a world-class fighter in Mirav.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: I think the fight that I'm most excited about, like if I'm not looking at the two main fights, is Aaron Pico and Arnold Allen.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: Arnold Allen is a guy that's been doing it for quite a while in that, you know.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: I think he's mostly always been a featherweight, but um, between the featherweight and bantamweight divisions and Aaron Pico, a younger guy, a guy with a wrestling background, um, both very, very skilled, capable of striking and takedowns.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think Aaron Pico might be one of those guys that's trying to move up the rankings and end up challenging for a title pretty soon himself in that featherweight division.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, I I'm excited to see that Arnold Allen, Aaron Pico fight.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: Besides the two main fights, is there anybody in particular you're excited to see?
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think the uh one that sticks out to me is the uh Dominic Reyes and Azumat Rizana fight.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Um, those are two guys that just like knocking people out.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: You know, Dominic Reyes uh challenge for the belt against John Jones, and he arguably won that fight.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: Um he's been up and down since then, suffered some pretty bad knockout losses, and also won too.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: So um Azamat's coming off a loss too to uh Hollow Costa, if I'm not mistaken.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, I they're both they're both uh really exciting knockout artists, so that's one that's just gonna be fun.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: Not I don't know if there's a lot as far as like titles go, but uh that's just why you know drink a couple beers and watch that one.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: Either way, the UFC is gonna make sure that we don't have nothing to watch on Saturday nights for the rest of the year.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: There's clearly good card after good card lined up.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: I'm excited about Noche.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: I'm excited about 331.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: I'm really excited about 333.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: Um, we'll probably try to have you back in the tailgate to discuss one of those events.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: Um any other thoughts you want to leave us with about either last night or just any fights in general recently?
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: Uh no, I mean I I think uh, you know, with the Paramount deal came through, we were all kind of worried as far as like the you know the quality of the flight cards, and some of it was kind of shaky, but I think they're in a good groove now.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: So now's the time to, you know, if you're not a fan, if you don't watch it uh too often, now's the time to tune in.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of great fights being put out, and I think uh it's definitely on an upswing.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: And it's accessible.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: All you need to do is have Paramount Plus, and you can watch every pay-per-view.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: Game changer, yeah.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: Everybody that was a diehard UFC fan was dropping 70, sometimes 140 bucks a month to make sure you could watch all the pay-per-views every every month.
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's a game changer, like Pedro said.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: So uh the last thing I always ask everybody that comes in the tailgate did you have a good time in the tailgate?
- 43:03SPEAKER_00: Was it warm?
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: Was it hospitable?
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: You didn't get any drinks in your hands, but did you have fun?
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: I might say this might be the best tailgate I've ever been a part of.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: And I've been plenty.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: Don't tell that to the slab.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having me on, Cam.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's fun as always uh chopping it up with you.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: So uh thank you for having me on, man.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: I appreciate it.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: Appreciate you, Pedro.
- 43:25SPEAKER_00: I I appreciate the time, the the insight, and the UFC fandom that we share.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: Of course, brother.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: We'll talk to you next time.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: All right, man.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: Well, that was awesome.
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: Having Pedro in here, chopping it up, talking a little fighting.
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: We're definitely excited to have Pedro join the podcast again at some point.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: That leaves us with our gold star and our what to watch for.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: So our gold star, gonna go to go go.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go in a little bit of a different direction this time.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: I'm going to give my gold star to a coach.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: And that is not even going to a head coach.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: Bears wide receiver coach, Antoine Randall L.
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: A guy, if you have been watching football for a while, you would be familiar with.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: Antoine Randall L was a former uh college quarterback, actually, but ended up playing receiver in the NFL for many years.
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: Played with the Washington franchise with the Redskins and the Commanders, played with the Steelers and won a Super Bowl on a trick play where he threw a long touchdown.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: Well, he's been in the NFL.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: He's been a wide receiver coach for the Lions for several years.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: Um, and now he went over last year with Ben Johnson and has been with the Bears.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: Well, Ben Johnson, notorious play caller, head coach of the Chicago Bears, in their preseason game against the Browns on set on Saturday, handed over his play calling duties to Antoine Randleau, gave him the headset, gave him the play sheet, and said, You got it, boss, go from here.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: And they went on a 24-0 run to end the game.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: That's gotta earn you a gold star.
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: That's pretty awesome.
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: I know that feels good, like just within coaching circles, that a guy that's never called plays before could could step up, even if it's in a preseason environment.
- 45:17SPEAKER_00: I really like that.
- 45:18SPEAKER_00: Love seeing that.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: I love when head coaches give their assistants a chance to shine a little bit.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: And Antoine Randall and sort of Ben Johnson, you guys are my gold stars of the weekend.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: And my what to watch for.
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: A couple things.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: The Cubs and the White Sox, two teams we talked quite a bit about when we talked about our baseball headlines.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: They start a series tomorrow.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: The Chicago series.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: The Cubs and the White Sox begin playing on Monday.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: I am very excited to see how that series shakes out.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: And then the English Premier League comes back Friday.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: Friday, um, August 21st.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: We're gonna see our first game.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: There's only one standalone game on Friday afternoon.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: That's Arsenal taking on a newcomer who is promoted into the EPL Coventry City, and then we're gonna get a full slate of games on Saturday, full slate of games on Sunday, and there will be even a couple games on Monday.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: So English Premier League back in a week.
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: La Liga kicked off this past weekend.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: Um Bundesliga in Germany is starting, um, League One in France.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: We are getting our international soccer, our professional soccer back after our glorious run at the World Cup.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: Um, so if you're still trying to scratch that soccer itch, this is a good time.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: You know, go out, look at the teams in the English Premier League.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: Maybe you want to follow a different league, maybe you, you know, based on your heritage or you know, where you have family around the world, you know, pick a team, you know, try to try to find a team that you know makes sense for you, whether it's based on their colors, a player that you like, uh, maybe if you want to follow an American like Christian Polisic at AC Milan or um Gio Giorena and see about his move to Strasbourg in France.
- 47:10SPEAKER_00: It it's a fun time to get into soccer.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: You know, we've been talking about MLS on this podcast.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: So with EPL starting up next week, good time to pick a team and figure out who you're gonna root for for the the 2026-27 season.
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: And then coming up the next episode of the Tailgate podcast, um, we're gonna break down some results in the Major League Baseball Association and then preview the AFC West, the Chiefs, the Chargers, the Raiders, as we talked about with Fernando Mendoza and the reigning champion Denver Broncos.
