- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, and welcome back to Conversations Live. I'm your host,
- 0:02Speaker 1: Cyrus Webb. Glad you all could join us once again
- 0:04Speaker 1: for a radio audience tuning in at WYED 94.1 FM
- 0:08Speaker 1: and WYEDonline.com, where you all can be with us. Also,
- 0:11Speaker 1: join us online worldwide via our podcast at iHeartRadio and
- 0:14Speaker 1: Amazon Music, as well as the Conversations Radio Network. Glad
- 0:17Speaker 1: you all could be with us as well. This is
- 0:20Speaker 1: part of a music and news segment here at WYED,
- 0:22Speaker 1: and today we're talking about something a little bit different.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We're talking about love and travel and the stresses that
- 0:26Speaker 1: can sometimes come Traveling with someone can reveal a lot
- 0:30Speaker 1: about a relationship, from how you handle money and compromise
- 0:34Speaker 1: to how you deal with travel mishaps. Newbooking.com research shows
- 0:38Speaker 1: that one in five travelers have abandoned a trip because
- 0:41Speaker 1: of their companion. Here to tell us more is relationship
- 0:45Speaker 1: expert and sociologist, Dr. Jess Carbono.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Dr.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Carbono, thank you so much for the time. I really
- 0:50Speaker 1: appreciate it. Hi, Cyrus.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Well, look, this is such an interesting topic, and as
- 0:55Speaker 1: a happily single guy, this is kind of amusing to
- 0:58Speaker 1: me in a sense, that my travel plans could be
- 1:02Speaker 1: interrupted because of relationships. But I think this is so interesting.
- 1:05Speaker 1: How can travel reveal whether two people are compatible, though?
- 1:09Speaker 2: It truly is, and I think it translates to both
- 1:11Speaker 2: friends and romantic partners. I am very excited to team
- 1:15Speaker 2: on this with Booking.com. They're inviting travelers to test their
- 1:19Speaker 2: compatibility through the turbulence test. These are experiences at nine
- 1:23Speaker 2: partner hotels across the U.S. because travel really acts as
- 1:27Speaker 2: a relationship accelerator. In everyday life, couples and friends can
- 1:31Speaker 2: avoid certain conversations or move around each other's habits. But
- 1:35Speaker 2: when you're navigating an airport or sharing a hotel room,
- 1:37Speaker 2: those differences become so much harder to avoid.
- 1:40Speaker 1: That's a really good point. And I love the fact
- 1:43Speaker 1: that you did mention even for friends, it can be
- 1:46Speaker 1: definitely an issue as well. How many people see travel, though,
- 1:49Speaker 1: as a way to test a relationship?
- 1:51Speaker 2: So many. Booking.com found that 69% of travelers would take
- 1:56Speaker 2: a trip to test their relationship compatibility, which shows that
- 2:00Speaker 2: many people recognize how revealing travel can be. The stakes
- 2:04Speaker 2: can also become very real very quickly. 35% of travelers
- 2:09Speaker 2: say they have discovered a companion was incompatible with them
- 2:12Speaker 2: after a trip, and 21% say they've abandoned a trip
- 2:16Speaker 2: mid-trip because of their companion. So That doesn't mean every
- 2:19Speaker 2: travel disagreement signals the end of a relationship, but it
- 2:23Speaker 2: does show how quickly a vacation can expose those underlying incompatibilities.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I love that. Well, communication is so important, I think,
- 2:31Speaker 1: for either a romantic relationship or even for friendships. What
- 2:35Speaker 1: should people discuss before they book a trip together?
- 2:39Speaker 2: Absolutely. Discuss the issues that are likely to create the
- 2:42Speaker 2: most tension, the pace of the itinerary, sleeping arrangements, and
- 2:46Speaker 2: how they want to handle unexpected expenses. Money is particularly important.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Nearly 6 in 10 travelers would hesitate to travel again
- 2:55Speaker 2: with someone who expects everyone else to pay. And 42%
- 2:59Speaker 2: say that surprise upgrades or activities create the most tension.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Money conflicts during travel are often really not about the money.
- 3:09Speaker 2: They're about whether people feel respected and everyone's boundaries are
- 3:13Speaker 2: being considered.
- 3:14Speaker 1: This is such good information, especially this time of year
- 3:17Speaker 1: where some people are traveling and preparing for travel, even
- 3:20Speaker 1: around the holidays of the carbon era. So what advice
- 3:23Speaker 1: do you have for someone who is about to take
- 3:25Speaker 1: their first trip, either with a partner or a friend?
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yes, the holiday season is right upon us and especially
- 3:30Speaker 2: ripe for these types of conversations, which are really important
- 3:33Speaker 2: to start before you leave. Talk about your budget, your priorities,
- 3:38Speaker 2: and what a successful trip looks like to each of you.
- 3:40Speaker 2: And build in flexibility. You don't need to spend every
- 3:44Speaker 2: minute together or follow the itinerary perfectly. And pay attention
- 3:48Speaker 2: to how you handle small problems. A delayed flight or
- 3:52Speaker 2: a missed reservation does not need to define the trip.
- 3:55Speaker 2: The real question is whether you can solve the problem
- 3:58Speaker 2: together in a respectful way.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Again, great information. I'm so glad to have you on
- 4:02Speaker 1: and be able to share this with our audience. Where
- 4:04Speaker 1: can travelers experience the turbulent test stays and find out
- 4:07Speaker 1: more information?
- 4:08Speaker 2: Booking.com is offering limited-time turbulence test packages at nine partner
- 4:13Speaker 2: hotels across the U.S. Each stay is designed to put
- 4:17Speaker 2: travel compatibility to the test in a fun and low-stakes way.
- 4:21Speaker 2: The experience is distinct because the prompts and games are
- 4:24Speaker 2: built around the actual travel behaviors U.S. travelers flagged as
- 4:28Speaker 2: the most polarizing, from in-flight etiquette and hotel hygiene habits
- 4:32Speaker 2: to money disagreements and road trip flashpoints. So guests are
- 4:36Speaker 2: working through real compatibility tension points in a setting where
- 4:39Speaker 2: it's fun rather than frustrating. Travelers can go to booking.com
- 4:44Speaker 2: slash turbulence test, for more information.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Well, make sure they link that up as well. Thank
- 4:49Speaker 1: you again, Dr.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Jess.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Really appreciate this information for sharing it with our audience.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to having you back on the program again.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Thank you so much for having me, and me too.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Hey, thank you. I appreciate that. And we thank your
- 4:59Speaker 1: audience for tuning in to another great segment of Conversations Live. Again,
- 5:02Speaker 1: part of our music and news segment here at WYAD.
