- 0:59is coming to visit. It's a perfect day for a picnic,
- 1:04says Vinny, so excited that he jumps on Pete's bed. What
- 1:07a great idea, says Pete. Who should we invite everyone?
- 1:12Benny yells Finny does not know how to use his
- 1:15inside voice. Right on, says Pete. Pete loves picnics. He
- 1:20jumps out of his bench and invite all of his friends.
- 1:23It's cave cat times, so Pete has to walk everywhere. First,
- 1:27Pete finds his good for an Ethel the appis Tsaurus.
- 1:31To get her attention, Pete climbs all the way up
- 1:33to the top of the tallest tree. Would you like
- 1:36to come to a picnic? Pete asks? I love to,
- 1:40says Ethel. What can I bring? How about a really
- 1:43big salad? Pete suggests, what a great idea, says Ethel.
- 1:47I love salad. I'm on it. Pete wanders along the river.
- 1:51He sees t Rex. T Rex plays guitar. T Rex
- 1:56is awesome, Hey, t Rex. Pete yells, want to come
- 1:59to picnic? Sweet, says t Rex. Can I bring my guitar? Definitely,
- 2:05says Pete. We can jam count me in, says t Rex.
- 2:10Is it okay if I bring al the alice saurs.
- 2:12She's a whiz on the drums. The more the merrier,
- 2:17says Pete. See you later, rock on, they say Pete.
- 2:22Caesar's friend Terry the terrysaurus in the sky. Hi, Pete,
- 2:26she calls. Pete invites Terry to the picnic too. Would
- 2:30you mind giving me a lift? Pete ask sure, says Terry.
- 2:33Climb aboard, Pete sees the spike tail of his main man, Skip,
- 2:38the Staegasaurus. How are you feeling today's Skip? Pete ask?
- 2:42Skip has been sick with the sniffles better, says Skip.
- 2:46Thanks for asking you up for a picnic. I think so,
- 2:50says Skip. I'd hate to miss the fun. It's almost
- 2:54time for the picnic. Cave cat Pete rushes through the forest.
- 2:58He doesn't want to be late. Well, all the dinosaurs
- 3:01talk about if I'm not there, he thinks as he runs. Whoops,
- 3:05Pete trips over Treny, the triceratops. Are you okay? Ask Pete?
- 3:11Am I okay? Ask Trenny. I'm fine, I'm a dinosaur.
- 3:15Are you okay? I'm okay, But I'm running a little.
- 3:19We're playing hide and seek, Trinny says, before Pete can finish.
- 3:22I think I hit a little too well. How long
- 3:24have you been hiding? Asks Pete. What day is it today?
- 3:28As Trenny, Pete thinks Trinny has been playing hide and
- 3:31seek a little too long. It's the day of our picnic,
- 3:34says Pete. All the dinosaurs are going to be there.
- 3:37Want to come do I ever, maybe somebody there will
- 3:41play hide and seek with me, she says. Trinny and
- 3:45Pete head to the picnic together. Pete writes on Trenny's
- 3:48forehead and holds on to her horns. When they arrive
- 3:51at the picnic ground, everyone is there. Benny and Ethel
- 3:54are setting up the picnic tables, t Rex and Al
- 3:58are warming to play some tunes. Terry and Trinny are
- 4:02playing hide and seek. Even Skip seems to be enjoying himself.
- 4:06It doesn't get any better than this, says Pete. T
- 4:10Rex comes over. Then, Hey, Pete, he asks, is there
- 4:13anything else to eat? I'm a corner of ore. I
- 4:15don't eat salad. Trnny comes over. I can't play hide
- 4:19and seek with Terry. Trenny says, she's flying around peeking.
- 4:24Skip comes over. I don't feel so good, he says,
- 4:26and he sneezes. The dinosaurs all start to argue. It
- 4:30is very loud. The picnic will be ruined if Pete
- 4:33doesn't do something. He leans over to Alan says, can
- 4:37you give me a beat? Pete takes out his guitar
- 4:40and starts to sing. Before long, everyone is having a
- 4:43great time. You know, t Rex tells Ethel, I've never
- 4:47actually tried salad before. Try it, says Ethel. I bet
- 4:50you'll like it. T Rex tastes the salad. Crunch crunch,
- 4:54crunch yum, says t Rex. This is delicious. Everyone grabs
- 5:00a plate and digs in. After lunch is over, everyone
- 5:03wants to keep the picnic going a little bit longer.
- 5:06They decide to play hide and seek. Pete is happy
- 5:09that everyone is getting along. He feels lucky to have
- 5:12such great friends. Now he just has to find them.
- 5:16After the game is over, they all cheer. Pete found
- 5:19all the dinosaurs, even Trenny. This is what the best.
- 5:23This was the best picnic ever. Everyone says it was
- 5:27the best picnic because you guys are the best friends ever,
- 5:30Pete says, and no one can argue with that. Pete
- 5:35the Cat at the beach. It's a hot day. Pete
- 5:38the Cat climbs in the car with his mom and
- 5:40his brother Bob. They had snacks, a surfboard, and a
- 5:43beach ball. They're head to the beach. Pete finds the
- 5:47perfect spot in the sand for their blanket. Let's go
- 5:50in the water, Bob says, as soon as they've unpacked.
- 5:53Maybe later, says Pete. He watches as Bob swims out
- 5:57to catch the big waves. Bob likes to serve, Pete
- 6:00likes to watch. It doesn't take long for Pete to
- 6:03get hot singing in the sun. I'm hot, says Pete.
- 6:07Why don't you join your brother in the water? Asks mom?
- 6:10Maybe later, says Pete. He decides to make a sand
- 6:14castle instead. He is hot, but at least he's having fun.
- 6:18His mom helps him build the castle nice and tall.
- 6:21They're just about to put on the finishing touch when
- 6:24his mom said, here comes a big wave. Pete jumps
- 6:28out of the way. Pete's castle is washed away by
- 6:31the wave. Bummer, thinks Pete. He looks out at the
- 6:34water and watches Bob ride a big wave. Wow, says Pete.
- 6:39That looks like fun. Come on, Pete says mom, Let's
- 6:42take a walk. There's lots to see on the beach.
- 6:45They find seashells, tidepools, and a crab. It buries hisself
- 6:50in the sand to stay cool, says mom. Pete wishes
- 6:53he could be cool. He decides to get his feet
- 6:55wet ah thinks Pete. The water does feel pretty good
- 6:59on my hot feet. It's time for lunch. Bob swings
- 7:04in from the ocean to join Pete and his mom.
- 7:06They eat sandwiches and drink cool lemonade. The sun is
- 7:10very strong. Pete is dry and hot, but Bob is
- 7:13wet and cool. It is so fun out there, says Bob.
- 7:17I must have served one hundred waves. After lunch, Pete
- 7:21asks Bob to play catch with him. No thanks, says Bob.
- 7:25I want to. I'll play ball with you, says Pete's mom.
- 7:29They toss the ball back and forth. They get hotter
- 7:32and hotter in the sun. Let's get our feet wet,
- 7:35says mom. Okay, says Pete. But just our feet. The
- 7:39water's cool. It feels good. Pete gets a little brave
- 7:42and goes deeper and deeper into the water. Bob waves
- 7:46to Pete, swim out here so I can teach you
- 7:49how to serve, Bob yells. Pete thinks about saying maybe later,
- 7:53but the water feels so good. Let's do it, he says.
- 7:57Lie on the board, says Bob. Pete lies on the board.
- 8:00Paddle your paws in the water, says Bob. Pete paddles forward,
- 8:04he waits for a big wave. A big wave comes,
- 8:08Pete's wave. Stand up, says Bob. Pete stands up, but
- 8:12he wobbles. It is hard to stand up on the surfboard.
- 8:16Pete falls in the water. It was a little scary,
- 8:18but it did not hurt. He comes back onto the surfboard.
- 8:22Good job, Bob says. But I fell down, says Pete.
- 8:25That's okay, says Bob. You'll stay on next time. Try
- 8:28again later, but Pete doesn't want to wait. Let's try
- 8:32again now, he says. Pete lies down again. He paddles
- 8:36out and waits. Here comes a big wave. He shouts,
- 8:40I know what to do. Pete thinks. He stands up
- 8:42on the board. It's a little easier this time, and
- 8:45he rides the big wave. Wow, says Bob. Way, cool
- 8:50little brother. For the rest of the day, Pete and
- 8:53Bob share the surfboard. It's okay to be afraid, says Bob. Yeah,
- 8:58agrees Pete. It's it, but it is more fun to surf.
- 9:05Pete the cat Pete's big lunch. It is lunchtime and
- 9:09Pete is ready to eat. What should Peat eat? A
- 9:12sandwich might be nice, yes, Pete wants a sandwich. Pete
- 9:19opens the fridge. He makes out a load. He takes
- 9:22out a loaf of bread. He finds the yummy fish.
- 9:25He adds tomato and mao. Pete looks at the sandwich.
- 9:28Pretty good, he thinks, but something is missing. He wants
- 9:31to add something sweet. Pete knows what he needs an apple.
- 9:35Pete loves apples. Pete sandwich needs something else, crackers. Every
- 9:41meal needs crackers. They are crunchy and delicious. Pete thinks
- 9:45he uses a hoe box. Pete looks at his sandwich again.
- 9:49It is still too small. I wonder how much food
- 9:52I need to eat. Pete thinks, my stomach feels very empty.
- 9:57Pete adds a pickle, cheese, an egg, hot dog, a banina,
- 10:00and a can of beans. Then to top it all off,
- 10:03Pete adds ice cream. He can't decide if he wants
- 10:06a scoop of chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry, so he bounces
- 10:09all three on top of the sandwich. Pete looks at
- 10:12his sandwich is bigger than him. How will I ever
- 10:15eat that? Thinks Pete. Maybe I need a ladder or finnel,
- 10:19or maybe something to squish it. Down so I can
- 10:22take a bite. I've got it, thinks Pete. He takes
- 10:26out his phone and calls his friends. He'd asks all
- 10:29of them to come over right away. Everyone goes over
- 10:33to Pete's house. I hope they're hungry, thinks Pete. Hey Pete,
- 10:36they say, do you have any snacks? I sure do,
- 10:40he says, come on in. Everyone takes a piece of
- 10:44the sandwich. There is plenty to go around. They each
- 10:47get the part they like the best. Now there's no
- 10:50more giant sandwich. Sharing is cool, says Pete. Pete the
- 10:55cat robo Pete, what a great sunny morning. Pete can't
- 11:00way to play baseball with his friends. Do you want
- 11:03to play catch? Pete asks Larry. I can't, says Larry.
- 11:06I'm going to the library. Do you want to play catch?
- 11:09Pete asked Kelly. I was about to go for a
- 11:12bike ride. Maybe later, says Kelly. Do you want to
- 11:15play catch? Pete asks John. I can't right now, says John,
- 11:19I have to paint the fence. All of Pete's friends
- 11:22are busy doing other things. Pete wishes his friends would
- 11:25do what he wants to do. It's no fun fun
- 11:29playing catch y'all by himself. If only I knew another me,
- 11:33Pete thinks, and just like that, Pete gets a great idea.
- 11:37Pete builds a robot. He programs it to be just
- 11:41like him. Welcome to the world, robo Pete, he says
- 11:45to the robot, You're my new best friend. We'll do
- 11:48everything together. Want to play catch? Great idea, says robo
- 11:54Pete in his robotic voice. Pete and robo Pete play catch, Wow,
- 11:59says Pete. Run after the ball. You sure can throw far.
- 12:04Robo Pete throws farther and farther until Pete needs to
- 12:07catch his breath. Time out, says Pete. I'm tired. Let's
- 12:11play something else. I want to play whatever you want
- 12:17to play, robo Pete says proudly. How about we play
- 12:23hide and seek? Says Pete. That will be fun, says
- 12:27robo Pete. Pete finds the best hiding place ever. He
- 12:31sure robo Pete will never find him. Ten nine, eight, seven, six, five,
- 12:42four three to one, shouts robo Pete. Red tea or
- 12:49not here? I come gotcha, shouts robo Pete. Taking Pete,
- 12:55how did you find me? Asked Pete. With my home,
- 13:00mean device, says robo Pete. You gave it to me.
- 13:05I can find anyone anywhere. Oh yeah, says Pete, a
- 13:10little disappointed. It's no fun playing hide and seek with
- 13:14someone who doesn't even have to try to find you. Okay,
- 13:18enough hide and seek, Let's play some guitar. Pete teaches
- 13:23robo Pete how to play a song he made up.
- 13:27You have to feel the music, Pete explained. Okay, the
- 13:31louder I played, the more I feel it, he shouts
- 13:34over the noise. Pete tries to stop robo Pete, but
- 13:38robo Pete can hear him. Robo Pete plays on and on.
- 13:41Pete goes outside to write a skateboard. Robo Pete follows him.
- 13:46That looks like fun, says robo Pete, as his feet
- 13:50transform him into a motorized skateboard and a jetpie comes
- 13:54out of his back. Thanks for the super speedy wills,
- 14:01he shouts as he takes off down the path. Wait,
- 14:04calls Pete. Pete chases after robo Pete. He has no
- 14:08idea well robo Pete is going until crash. Robo Pete
- 14:13slamps into the sandbox of the playground. Are you okay,
- 14:17Pete asks robot. I am a robot. I am indestructible,
- 14:24says robot Pete. What is this strange place? It's a playground,
- 14:31says Pete. My friends are here, says Pete. CALLI Larry John,
- 14:36and this is robo Pete. I made him myself cool,
- 14:40says Larry. We are going to help John finish painting,
- 14:43says Kelly. And then we are going on a bike ride.
- 14:47I want to go on that. Thing interrupts robo Pete.
- 14:52Thing asks Pete as robo Pete zooms up the slide.
- 14:56Robo Pete, I want to help my friends paint to
- 14:59the fin us, paint the fence. That sounds great, Robot
- 15:06Pete says, I am programmed to paint faster than any one.
- 15:12Pete and his friends try to help, but robo paint
- 15:15paints too fast, so instead they ride bikes, and they
- 15:19read books, and after robo Pete is done painting, they
- 15:23help him clean the brushes. Pete realizes that it doesn't
- 15:27matter what they do, just being with his friends is
- 15:31what makes it fun. Pete the cat construction destruction recess,
- 15:38Pete shouts, says. The bell rings when Pete gets outside,
- 15:41to play. Oh no, the playground is a disaster. The
- 15:45swings are broken, the slight is rusty, and the sandbox
- 15:49is full of weeds. How can we play out here?
- 15:52Ask Pete. Somebody should clean this up. That gives Pete
- 15:56an idea. Pete will build a new playground. He draws
- 15:59the play for the new slides, tunnels and swings. Wow,
- 16:03says Principal Nancy. Can you really build that? Not by myself,
- 16:08says Pete. I'm going to need some help. Whatever you need, Pete,
- 16:12it yours. The next day, Pete arrives at the playground
- 16:15before school. The construction crew is already there. He gives
- 16:19them the go ahead to tear down the old playground.
- 16:23Creek crash down goes the slide clink clank, down goes
- 16:28the swings bang boom, down goes the tower. Hong Kong.
- 16:33A truck arrives to recycle the middle. The new playground
- 16:37equipment arrives. It's time to get to work. The cement
- 16:40mixerfords concrete. The dump truck brings sand and dirt. The
- 16:45back ho digs. The whole team gets the job done.
- 16:48Building a playground is hard work. The new playground is cool.
- 16:53But it's not cool enough. What do you think, Pete asked,
- 16:56holding up his laziest plans. It will be too hard
- 16:59to build, says one of the workers. And everything is
- 17:02almost finished, says another. But we'll make this the best
- 17:05playground ever. Pete says. Then let's do it. The workers say.
- 17:10Screwdrivers twist and screws. Wrenches tighten the nuts. The workers
- 17:15try to make everything perfect. Hooray, the new playground is ready.
- 17:20Everyone is amazed until smash crunch. Thud oh no, says
- 17:27Principal Nancy as the new playground crashes to the ground.
- 17:31The pieces are all mixed up. Everyone is disappointed, except
- 17:35for Pete. They rebuild the playground. It's not how we
- 17:39planned it, Pete shouts, It's even better. This playground is
- 17:42still with surprises and places to explore. The school playground
- 17:47is the most amazing playground ever. Sometimes you got to
- 17:52dare to dream big. The next the stories we'll be
- 17:56reading will be on women's history since marches Women History Month,

- 19:20I wasn't afraid to be powerful. I hope other girls
- 19:23can feel strong too. What would you like to ask me?
- 19:28Our next story is called Michelle Mama, First Lady and
- 19:31Superhero and it was published by HarperCollins Publishers. It has
- 19:37a copyright year of twenty nineteen and it was written
- 19:40by Sarah Holden. I was standing in front of the
- 19:44White House, it looked like a castle. Imagine living here,
- 19:48I said to myself. Earth to Darlene, said my friend Sam.
- 19:52She giggled. Let's pitch her tent. Sam said, I want
- 19:57to help the group. Our girl scout troop was busy
- 20:00getting ready. Missus Obama had invited us to camp out
- 20:03on the lawn. Our troop leader was Miss Williams. Good job, girls,
- 20:08she said. When our tent was finally up, Missus Obama
- 20:12will be so proud. Miss Williams said, with a smile.
- 20:15Don't forget we will be showing her more of our skills.
- 20:19Miss Williams turned to me, darlinge, will you show missus
- 20:22Obama how to tie a square knot? My stomach flipped
- 20:26like a pancake. Then it flopped like a fish. No,
- 20:29thank you, I said. Miss Williams looked at me. Will
- 20:32you think about it, she said, then she walked away
- 20:35to help some girls out. I don't get it, Sam says,
- 20:39you're great with notts usually I am, I said, but
- 20:42I don't want to mess up in front of missus Obama.
- 20:45Sam shrugged. I can't wait to meet the first lady,
- 20:49Sam said. My mom said, She's why I have free
- 20:52lunches at school, So now my stomach isn't grumbling through
- 20:55science class. Sam grinned. I heard missus Obama's helping girls
- 21:00around the world stay in school, I said, and that
- 21:03she met Elma from Sesame Street. Obama's like a superhero.
- 21:08Sam said, it's time girls called Miss Williams. My stomach
- 21:13flipped again. We all went to sit in a circle.
- 21:16Then Missus Obama arrived. I thought she looked like a queen.
- 21:20Missus Obama sat down on a bait Hey bill, Welcome
- 21:24to all of you, she said. I am so excited
- 21:27you're here. This is the first time anyone has camped
- 21:30on this long. Missus Obama said, you're making history. We
- 21:35all cheered. I remember when I was a kid. Missus
- 21:38Obama said. I was smart and I always try my best,
- 21:42but I worried a lot. I worried about missing things up.
- 21:45Sam looked over at me. Some people told me I
- 21:48wasn't good enough. That didn't help. Missus Obama said, I
- 21:52wish I could tell that little girl to have faith
- 21:55in herself. Missus Obama said, and that it's okay to
- 21:59make mistakes. Now I'm looking forward to meeting each of you.
- 22:02Missus Obama said, you can show me your stuff. Sam
- 22:06reached over and squeezed my hand. You should have faith
- 22:09in yourself too, she said, will you come with me?
- 22:13I asked, Sam nodded. Miss Williams, I said, can I
- 22:18still show missus Obama my square? Knot? Come with me?
- 22:22She said, I didn't get it right at first, but
- 22:25that was okay. Missus Obama gave me a high five.
- 22:29She knew I tried my very best. Our next book
