- 0:31OK guys, so this video. I am breaking down three of the
- 0:35top tips I've got for helping with autism and food issues
- 0:40because let me tell you, there's a lot.
- 0:42OK guys, before we get started, I'd love to know, are you a
- 0:44person on the spectrum or are you a parent with a kid on the
- 0:47spectrum and you're looking to learn more about the food?
- 0:49Leave me a comment down below. Let me know which one you know
- 0:51where you're coming from, because I want to know.
- 0:53I want to have that discussion with you and I'd love to talk.
- 0:56I read and respond to every comment.
- 0:57It's never wasted. I see every single one.
- 1:00Please do that now. Oh and if this topic is of
- 1:01interest for anybody, please tag them your friends in the comment
- 1:06down below just like at them because I feel like if we do
- 1:08that and then they they see it, then they might get something
- 1:10from it. That's super cool, right guys?
- 1:12So I kind of looked through all of the things that that kind of
- 1:16you know all the issues that we have with autism and food and
- 1:18there's there's so many things that people think is the reasons
- 1:23why autistic people don't like certain foods or don't eat
- 1:25things in certain times. Right now let me put some
- 1:28perspective. Mums and dads, are you sitting
- 1:30down? If the chicken nugget could be
- 1:32the global symbol for autism, then you would have no issues
- 1:37because we all know that chicken Nuggets is kind of like the
- 1:40staple chicken Nuggets, Chicken Nuggets, Chicken Nuggets.
- 1:43I am vegan, but I do have vegan chicken Nuggets.
- 1:46So it doesn't change if you change your diet, and it doesn't
- 1:49change as you get older. You like what you like.
- 1:51But there are certain things that we need to take into
- 1:53consideration when preparing food, when we're situated for
- 1:57food and situations we put ourselves in for food with
- 2:00people on the autism spectrum. And I'm going to break each and
- 2:03every single one of those down I want to go over before we get
- 2:05into the tips. I want to go over why.
- 2:07You are probably wrong in thinking why people on the
- 2:10autism spectrum don't like eating certain foods.
- 2:12Now the current consensus is very simple.
- 2:14People think a few things that people with autism are picky
- 2:18eaters, which feels they are. People with autism are stubborn,
- 2:23so they don't want to eat certain things just because they
- 2:25just don't feel like it. I guess sometimes we all get
- 2:28like that when we don't eat certain things.
- 2:30Another one is that this is the big one.
- 2:32People think that autistic people all have sensory issues
- 2:37with food. Now, it can be said that sensory
- 2:40processing disorder does come come upwardly with almost every
- 2:43single diagnosis of autism, because it's kind of one of the
- 2:46ways that you diagnose it in a way.
- 2:48In terms of that, yes, sensory processing disorder can impact
- 2:52the way that you communicate with food and the way you
- 2:54understand food and the way an autistic person feels like
- 2:58something that they want. Maybe they don't want cold food
- 3:00on a plate. Maybe it has to be really hot.
- 3:02Maybe they want to segregate, you know, peas to one side,
- 3:05gravy in in another side and they want, like, I don't know,
- 3:08meet in the middle or what? I don't know how you want to do
- 3:10it. But maybe they want things
- 3:11segregated off. Maybe they want different balls
- 3:12with stuff like a like a tapas table just for like a Sunday
- 3:15dinner. But that isn't the main issue
- 3:20why people in the Hudson Spectrum don't like certain
- 3:22foods. Let me put a scenario to you and
- 3:24like mums and dads. I know you guys are going to
- 3:26love this. You are.
- 3:31You make food in the house, right?
- 3:33You do a pasta dish, right? So you do a pasta dish and you
- 3:35make pasta for everybody and you put it down and your child,
- 3:38who's on the special looks to the pasta dish and gets freaks
- 3:41out, right? Freaks out.
- 3:42It's just pasta. Like, you know, maybe it's
- 3:45butter noodles and some tomato and basil kind of sauce and they
- 3:49freak out. They can't have it.
- 3:50They end up just having chicken Nuggets and breadsticks or
- 3:52whatever, you know, you make that night helps them out and
- 3:55then they're cool with that, They're cool with it and that
- 3:57kind of that kind of works. Now you you guys are going to
- 4:01know this. You honestly, if you guys
- 4:03understand what I'm talking about right now, give this video
- 4:05a thumbs up, because the next thing I'm going to say is going
- 4:07to make you give this video a thumbs up.
- 4:09Then you go out to a restaurant with family and friends because
- 4:12it's somebody's birthday and you're the restaurant and
- 4:14they're serving up all the food. Now they serve up pasta with
- 4:17tomato and basil sauce and there is a butter noodle pasta, and
- 4:22then they give it to your child because everybody gets seated
- 4:25and plated. And regardless of what you know,
- 4:27you know you've got a bag full of like goodies that you're
- 4:29going to give to your kid because that's what we all do.
- 4:31But your child eats the pasta and the sauce without an issue.
- 4:40So what is going on? Initially you have thought it
- 4:43was a sensory processing disorder because the noodles are
- 4:46too slimy, the food is too cold, the I don't.
- 4:49The sauce is too hot. Thought there was sauce on the
- 4:51noodles, right? It's probably none of those
- 4:53things. And you know why?
- 4:55Because it's environmental. One of the things that people
- 4:59always forget about, and they're always wrong with autism is that
- 5:02they forget that environment is everything.
- 5:04So where a child on the spectrum or a person on the spectrum may
- 5:09like a certain meal in a certain place, they may not like that in
- 5:12another place. So it's not just a meal, it's
- 5:14the setting as well. Isn't that something
- 5:17interesting? So I'm going to go through three
- 5:19of the top tips that to help you overcome most of these issues.
- 5:23When you're trying to prepare meals, when you're trying to get
- 5:25people to eat and when you're trying to just try different
- 5:28things out really with autism and food issues because food
- 5:31aversion and autism goes hand in hand, right?
- 5:34Let's do it right now. Okay situational connection.
- 5:38So try situating and understanding the situation.
- 5:42So if you're at home and they like a meal at home, but then
- 5:46you take them to school or you go to work, don't like that meal
- 5:49in work or in school, then think about it.
- 5:52Make that list. Make that connection.
- 5:54Understand, like, OK, well, you know, I know that they'll eat
- 5:57pasta here, but they won't eat pasta there.
- 5:59I know that they'll eat kind of like, you know, rice crispy
- 6:02cakes here. They want rice crispy cakes over
- 6:03there. When you do that, when you know,
- 6:06when you make those notes, when you complete that kind of
- 6:08calendar that you know, OK, they'll eat this there.
- 6:12So I'm safe. You are going to then be able to
- 6:15make your life a lot easier because by knowing what and what
- 6:19you cannot eat at certain restaurants with your kid or
- 6:22yourself, I mean that in itself just a lot of stress, a lot of
- 6:27anxiety just gets taken off mom and dad and they can just enjoy
- 6:30the time out. So #2 reduced sensory issues.
- 6:34Now there are sensory issues, right?
- 6:36That I can said at the beginning, it's not saying that
- 6:38sensory issues aren't a thing, sensory issues are a thing, but
- 6:40it's not the only thing. Now something I'd say about
- 6:42sensory issues and what we need to do here is we need to reduce
- 6:45the triggers. So when you're making a meal and
- 6:48like you know, maybe your kid touches the pasta or touches the
- 6:52meal and then they get a trigger and a century overload and they
- 6:56like freak out and then it starts to meltdown.
- 6:58Make a note in that same diary book, make a note saying pasta
- 7:02in the house whilst touching causes meltdown because you have
- 7:05to make a complete guideline to a persons needs because but why
- 7:11wouldn't you? You're trying to help them
- 7:13understand and eat nutritious food.
- 7:15So you have to understand and appreciate the fact that some
- 7:18foods are going to be triggering.
- 7:19Like for me, for instance, I can't touch a plate that has
- 7:22cold gravy on it and I can't have gravy on a plate that's
- 7:25cold. I can eat the food when it's
- 7:26hot, but I can't eat the food once it's cooled down.
- 7:28When food cools down, it freaks me out.
- 7:32And the same is when I've got hot and cold things on the plate
- 7:35together. Like, you know, say you have
- 7:36like a piece of grilled chicken and then a salad that freaks me
- 7:40out because the salad is really cold and then the chicken is
- 7:42really hot. I don't eat chicken.
- 7:43I'm just saying as an example and you know, so I can't do
- 7:47that. It has to be cold or it has to
- 7:48be hot. So just make a note of those
- 7:51things and those changes and those requirements because those
- 7:53things are going to save you a lot of stress and a lot of
- 7:56issues because you won't be able to dish something up then that
- 7:57is going to cause an autism meltdown, let alone a lack of
- 8:01eating right. Because you're going to be
- 8:02wanting to, to obviously have them calm in in the chair or
- 8:06whatever you're sitting to eat and also enjoy the food and
- 8:09actually eat the food. So yeah, this is diary idea.
- 8:13It's your new Bible. OK, so #3 is environmental calm.
- 8:17And what I mean by this right, is the setting in which you
- 8:22place on to eat food. And this could relate back to
- 8:25the the situational connection is having you know it's so why?
- 8:30Why would they eat food in a certain place and not in another
- 8:33place, but it's the same meal but in different locations?
- 8:35And it could be down to environmental factors.
- 8:37It could be too many bright lights in your house and not in
- 8:39the restaurant, or vice versa. There could be certain smells
- 8:42that the the the chair sitting on could be triggering the
- 8:46tablecloth could be triggering the knife and fork, the plate
- 8:49could be triggering. It could be a whole host of
- 8:51things. It could be the smell.
- 8:51Maybe they're sitting too close, Maybe they're too hot, Maybe
- 8:53they're too cold. Environmental changes can create
- 8:58issues with sensory processing and food perversion.
- 9:02Now my tip for this is to create a calming environment.
- 9:06Find out what calms your child or the person that you're with
- 9:09on the spectrum. What what do they like?
- 9:11What is calming for them? And create that environment when
- 9:14you're creating food. But don't make it too chills
- 9:19only because then they won't eat food.
- 9:20They'll just want to play games and comic books and watch TV.
- 9:23What you want to do is make it a food area, but a calming
- 9:27environment food area, so that they can enjoy the food, they
- 9:30can enjoy that meal, they can interact with the food because
- 9:33you've already done you know, you reduced sensory issues,
- 9:35you've already, you know, situated the connection and then
- 9:39now you've made environmental calm.
- 9:41So by doing those you then have the best possible chance of
- 9:46creating an environment and a meal that the person is going to
- 9:49enjoy, eat and actually feel calm.
- 9:51And if all else fails, you can always put those chicken Nuggets
- 9:53in the oven or just drive to McDonald's and get some chicken
- 9:55Nuggets. But at the end of the day, this
- 9:58is designed to make sure that you guys can get the best out of
- 10:01your eating experience. And if you think that anybody
- 10:03else can benefit from these tips, please share this video
