- 0:38you ever do the worm? Once upon a time as a young hefe rolling
- 0:42around getting to make some friends in your younger years? You ever a break

- 0:56whatever it takes, just give me the note. Just give me.
- 1:03I told you like, well, it's more of a rocket. He doesn't.
- 1:04What would be your dance? What's the go to dance? Did you
- 1:07do a little chatcha, a little shimmy? Just a white man's overbite?
- 1:11What did you have? What'd you do? Wow? Over bite? Lit
- 1:15Lawrence ballroom dancing? Wow? Look at you? He always act like I'm
- 1:22just like would you went to see Frankie Valley? What were you doing to
- 1:26dance? Dude? I'm not even gonna I'm not even dignifying you. He's
- 1:36not even suffering me today. Football, Yeah question, I'm not. I'm
- 1:45not lining up the testimonials, but I could. Let's get that, okay,
- 1:51Okay, I like that. We're gonna need you to too. Then
- 1:53I'm gonna have to gonna have to get the backs. Just wormed in the
- 1:56hallway, got there, Jeff, He wormed every buddy. He ain't gonna
- 2:00get me a dance partner. But this kid's back is working on like Lombards.
- 2:06Are you gonna be okay tomorrow? I'm gonna be just fine. This
- 2:07is all fine. I told you. It's more worried about hitting the little
- 2:10people. That's more worried about in the old gutae that starts there Jeff and
- 2:15slowly creeps up. Jeff is like, what the hell did we agree to?
- 2:22Just like, I'm out, that's just why we don't have a freezer
- 2:24to clean. I'm getting that. That's what he does, is why he
- 2:27does Monday. Yes, Tuesdays are a mess. Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 2:30now you know why you're never look Jeff that there's more interesting things going on
- 2:34and practice you wouldn't be suffering this. But Uh, it's the world you're
- 2:38living in. What do you got for me? What do you want to
- 2:42know about practice? How the secondary look today? Jeff How is this secondary?
- 2:45Is this a good secondary? Patrick Certan is good? What else is
- 2:49good? Oh? Patrick Artan hasn't been participating much that too, I will
- 2:55say, you know, people want to know, you know, Riley Moss
- 2:58is getting a lot of run, you know right now with the defensive starters.
- 3:01Well that means anything in late July and early August, we'll see,
- 3:06but it is very telling that there is an awful lot of Riley Moss to
- 3:12Mara Matthis and and j Kwan McMillan when they're in sort of that first nickel
- 3:16look, and there's no certain in the equation. All right? What about
- 3:21the safety position though, Jeffer Jones? What they're gonna miss justin miss Justice
- 3:28Simmons. You know they're really hoping PJ. Lock is ready for a big
- 3:35you know, a big jump and ready for the opportunity, you know he
- 3:38uh, you know. Caden Stearns, who actually I think we all forget
- 3:44had earned the starting gig last year, has not participated much as he comes
- 3:50back either. But I think PJ. Lock is a player they like and
- 3:54have high hopes for, and he's he's gonna have to be everything they hope
- 4:00for. I think to not have sort of, you know, some slippage
- 4:03in the secondary and in today's league, you better survive in the nickel plenty
- 4:11if you're gonna make it, and I think that'll be something I've got my
- 4:15eye on as they moved through the preseason. Break down the offense for US
- 4:19today, Jeff, I know, because here's what I think is funny is
- 4:24it's almost like Peyton. Here's what we talk about sometimes on the sideline.
- 4:28But you guys are mentioning the win. And again I'll give you one of
- 4:30Gale Force win today. It wasn't knocking towers over or anything like that,
- 4:34but it was a fair that he was a noticeable wind. It wasn't a
- 4:36light breeze, and it looked like the wind affected some things. Just break
- 4:41down what you saw out of the offensive sessions. Again, it's so early
- 4:46in this process, but my sense is you've got two guys really sort of
- 4:51playing conservatively in bow Knicks and Jared Steadham and Zach Wilson the sort of far
- 4:59more will to take a look up the sideline or to take a look,
- 5:03you know, down the hash a little deeper, so we'll see how it
- 5:08plays out when it's really underway. But again, a superficial view, A
- 5:15very superficial view. I cautioned people. But it feels to me you got
- 5:20like two guys trying to play par golf to not make big mistakes, and
- 5:26the third guy is a little more willing to take a chance for a bigger
- 5:30player or two. But it's just OTA's They can't really do a whole lot
- 5:35and seven on seven. You guys know how I feel it is. It
- 5:41is not a gauge of anything substantive for me, It's just an assignment drill.
- 5:47Does everybody know their assignments. It's not to be used in my mom
- 5:55as a grading scale for anything. Jeff lake Wall to ESPN he's with us
- 5:59here and a Tuesday afternoon breaking down the OTA practice. That was Jeff joins
- 6:02us on the ramos Law hotline Car accident. You need ramos Law medical doctor
- 6:06and attorney. Visit Ramoslaw dot com. This is, I guess, more
- 6:10of a procedural question here, Jeff. But Andy and I were talking about
- 6:15this when when it comes to Bonnicks. Okay, and evaluating a player it
- 6:21was the sixth quarterback taking in a draft at twenty four years of age,
- 6:26what he was asked to do with the University of Oregon, and evaluating him
- 6:30fairly while also you know, having standards and milestones that we need to see
- 6:35him meet as a as a rookie quarterback as we go through camp in the
- 6:43preseason in August and into September, what are the little things that you,
- 6:47Jeff Legold, are going to tick off the list to be like, Okay,
- 6:51he's he's at least on a good track right now. You know,
- 6:57I think I personally look or uh. They have a little progression drill they
- 7:03do the quarterbacks off to the side. I really pay attention during that because
- 7:08it's it's a very spur of the moment, real time. It's a it's
- 7:13a really good drill. They essentially bark out the progressions to the quarterback,
- 7:19you know, as soon as he gets the ball and then they have to
- 7:23adjust. So I like to watch that. I like to watch, you
- 7:27know, the silly things people don't may not think mean much, but you
- 7:31know, how do they get in and out of the huddle? Are players
- 7:34looking back like, Okay, I didn't get the call or I don't know
- 7:39what's going on, because you saw a lot of that when things aren't going
- 7:44well in a quarterback competition with some of the guys here in the past.
- 7:49The linemen walked to the line of scrimmage and they're looking back at the quarterbacks
- 7:55still because they still aren't sure of everything, because uh, you know,
- 7:59Sean Slayton's offense is a version of the West Coast offense, and it is
- 8:03known for very wordy play calls, very long play calls. It's part of
- 8:09the offense and it is part of the challenge to a young quarterback running the
- 8:13huddle in it and that's kind of will be a big part of his early
- 8:18progression, you know, is he too deep in the play clock by the
- 8:22time they get to the line of scrimmage, because that that is a huge
- 8:26thing for people to keep an eye on. And again, turnovers, you
- 8:31know, turnovers are turnovers will lose you the job. And I don't care
- 8:35if you're turning it over on Wednesday or Sunday, it all counts huge and
- 8:41that will always be something to pay attention to. And bonicks especially, you
- 8:46know, I don't know that the it's part of the Broncos progression per se,
- 8:52but it will be. If he's the starter, he has to show
- 8:54he can challenge all parts of the field, and frankly, he has not
- 8:58done that in the they brief OTAs that we've been able to see. You
- 9:03know, a three day mini camp will be a little better next week to
- 9:07get a little bigger view. But I you know, and they haven't.
- 9:11They haven't obviously unveiled anything. But today they did a red zone period and
- 9:18they only challenged the end zone on two throws, and one of them was
- 9:22a throwaway. So I don't know that you can live that way in the
- 9:26real world once the regular season starts. I thought it was interesting. I
- 9:31want to go back to your comment and then the last answer. You felt
- 9:35like Stidhaman Knicks are playing par golf for Zach Wilson's not afraid to let it
- 9:39rip a little bit. You think some of that is out of Zach Wilson
- 9:43knows he's got to do something pretty great to earn the starting job, and
- 9:46the other two feel like they're battling for it, or do you just think
- 9:48that shows us the natures of these QBS. I think some of it is
- 9:54the part we don't think about. Jack Wilson started more games than the other
- 9:58guys have. I mean, he he instead has been around the longest.
- 10:01But Zach Wilson is the most experienced quarterback in real games of the three.
- 10:09So I think that's some of it. I think some of it's just his
- 10:13nature as a player, and some of it is what you're saying. I
- 10:16think he knows now. He also made the biggest mistake today as well,
- 10:22so that's the part he's going to have to temper. But again it's just
- 10:26my early read is I see two guys playing it really close to the vest
- 10:31because they want to win the job and believe mistakes will be the separating factor,
- 10:37whereas Zach Wilson may feel like, hey, I was I'm not the
- 10:41first round pick and I'm not the guy who was here last year, so
- 10:46I might as well show off what I can do that the other two guys
- 10:50can't do as well, and that is push the ball, you know,
- 10:54down the field with some velocity, going to be fairy. Zach Wilson he
- 10:58only knows mistakes, So it's it all sort of fits the profile right there.
- 11:03You know what I'm saying exactly. I think he knows he's the most
- 11:05physically gifted quarterback. Yeah, you know, you might as well show what
- 11:11you can show. But you know, again, he did make the big
- 11:13mistake today, and that's that doesn't count much. Now. A little bit
- 11:18you get yelled at and all that, and you'll see it in the in
- 11:22the review. But you know, he throws that same ball in the second
- 11:26week of August and that's gonna sting a lot, you know, in terms
- 11:31of your evaluation. All right, So Jeff Lakewall of ESPN today, Sean
- 11:37Payton was asked if Courtland Sutton's attendance is to be expected at mandatory mini camp.
- 11:43I want to play the audio of Shawn's answer to that question right here,
- 11:48and then I want to ask you a little bit about motive behind this
- 11:52answer. Yeah, I think he'll be here for a mini camp. I
- 11:54mean, it's mandatory. And what when I've been asked about Courtland, I'm
- 12:01going to say this, man, I just know his work ethic, I
- 12:05know the player, and you know there's there's a list of things that race
- 12:13through your mind this time in the offseason as a head coach, and respectfully
- 12:18when I say this to him, because he and I have talked, I
- 12:22think that'll work itself out. So I think he'll be here, Yeah,
- 12:26but I don't know that for sure. Interesting answer right there. I believe
- 12:31he'll be there. I don't know for sure. It is mandatory, which
- 12:35he can, you know, fall back on the CBA if he needs to.
- 12:39Right there. What's going on with that answer right there, jeffle Sean
- 12:43Payton speaking out of pocket? Was he trying to speak it into existence?
- 12:48Was he trying to put some pressure on Courtland Sutton? What did you make
- 12:52of that answer? I don't think they're putting pressure, but I do think
- 12:56they expect him to be here and you and it'll hest Courtland one hundred grand
- 13:01if he's not one hundred and one grand and change to be exact, but
- 13:07and that's real money, even if you're Courtland Sutton. So I think they
- 13:11fully expect him to be there. Now. He hasn't been here for any
- 13:16of the conditioning, for any of the ohas, so I doubt he would
- 13:20do very much, if anything, in drills. But if he comes,
- 13:26but I think they would like him here and are very nicely telling him it
- 13:31is mandatory and we can and likely will find you for not being here.
- 13:37So I think that's where it is. I think they expect him to be
- 13:39here. I think they'll be slightly disappointed if he's not. But I still
- 13:45get no sense any real contract adjustment, any significant contract adjustment, is on
- 13:52the horizon there. And you know, again, he's his base salary is
- 13:58thirteen million, two million of it's already guaranteed because he was on the roster
- 14:03through March. There just isn't a lot of wiggle room in the contract too,
- 14:11and they don't have the cap space frankly to up it in a in
- 14:16a even a bookworking sort of way. So not a lot of options on
- 14:22either side of this. So it's really weird to me that it both sides
- 14:26let it get to this point without some kind of definitive answer like no,
- 14:31we're not going to adjust your deal, you know, move on, or
- 14:35you know, just whatever they're going to do, and maybe they throw some
- 14:39incentives out there and everybody calls it a compromise and he comes in. But
- 14:43I would guess he would be here next week and not do very much on
- 14:48the field. But I will tell you the red zone drills I have seen
- 14:52He's the only finisher right now among the receivers. Again, in balls that
- 14:58go to the end zone, and they only threw two today in an entire
- 15:03red zone period, they threw two balls to the end zone. One of
- 15:07them was a throwaway, the other one is to a player who likely would
- 15:11not be on the field, Michael in a game this season. Yeah,
- 15:16okay, So the simple question, although I feel like you're answering it,
- 15:20has Courtland gained any leverage in this thing after OTAs? Has he gained any
- 15:24leverage? I don't think either side has much leverage other than they both need
- 15:30each other. Courtland needs to a crew a season to get closer, they
- 15:33get into the market, and you know, I think seven hundred and seventy
- 15:41yards isn't going to inspire them to do something. You know, if he
- 15:46had a twelve hundred yard season, maybe we're having a different discussion. Now.
- 15:50Ten touchdowns, He's tied for fourth last year in the league, which
- 15:54is damn good. And again right now, I have a hard time seeing
- 15:58where the ten touchdowns come from if he's not on the field. But you
- 16:04know, there's a lot of time between now and games and all of that.
- 16:07But they you know, it's been glaring in the practices so far with
- 16:12the young receivers. Josh Reynolds will have an impact in this offense, but
- 16:18they they aren't full of finishers all over the place in terms of who can
- 16:23win a contested catch other than Courtland and Tim Patrick and possibly Josh Renels.
- 16:30I thought Tim Patrick looked good. What's been your evaluation of the the legs
- 16:34of Tim Patrick? How's he looking right now? You know he's moving well,
- 16:40I guess we haven't seen you know, we haven't sort of seen the
- 16:44all go plays yet where there's been a lot of catch and run, a
- 16:48lot of underneath and that's that's pretty standard procedure when you're in this level of
- 16:53an install in the offseason. So he will be a guy see in camp
- 17:00because they need him in a lot of ways, you know, on the
- 17:03field, in the offense, in the locker room. He brings a toughness
- 17:07to them along with his play, of course, but they need him to
- 17:12be around and be productive and be involved. All right, Well, Jeff
- 17:17legwell breaking it down as only he can. Jeff, go practice the worm.
- 17:21You got a lot of catching up to do to get to Andy's level,
- 17:25right, now, but we appreciate it as always. Thank you for
- 17:26joining us on a Tuesday. Or he has a lot of catching up to
- 17:30get to me. Wow, well yeah it is. Next time you're in
- 17:34studio, we're dancing it off, worm off, worm off, Leggy,
- 17:40that's a good challenge. Guys like twenty years older than you are. Oh
- 17:45now he's oh no, nobody can do anything. You're still nimble black like
- 17:52you're some I know what you do in your free time, all right,
- 17:57I know I can keep yourself limber lock like you're some wretched old, frozen
- 18:02old man. You're not. I gotta put my walker aside. Yeah,
- 18:07the work Yoda out there, and then Leggy, go have go, have
- 18:12some warm milk and settle into the recliner. Okay, thanks man, watch
- 18:18some matt Lock and have a quiet afternoon. That's what I'll do, the
- 18:27great Jeff Legwald, everybody from ESPN, what is right there. I will
- 18:32never do it Tuesday again. On a Tuesday. Tuesdays are a mistake.
- 18:36You never desk Bradlets. You never want to come out this show on a Tuesday.
