Sam: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about Falling Upward by Richard Rohr, which is this beautiful, kind of unsettling book about why the worst things that happen to us might actually be the doorway to the best things. Sophie, I have to ask, because you're the one who pushed this book on me, what made you pick it up in the first place?
• 0:22
Sophie: Hey there Sam. So this is Richard Rohr, he's a Franciscan priest, and Falling Upward is basically his map of what he calls the two halves of life. The reason it matters is that most of us are taught to treat failure and loss as things to avoid or fix. Rohr says they're the actual curriculum. And once you hear it framed that way, you can't unhear it.
• 0:44
Sam: Okay, so the two halves. I want to make sure I've got this right, because when I first heard the phrase I thought he meant young and old. And that's not it at all, is it?
• 0:55
Sophie: No, it's not about age. It's about consciousness. The first half is where you build what he calls the container. You construct an identity, a career, a set of beliefs, a clear sense of right and wrong. And that's not a bad thing. He's really insistent on that.
• 1:13
Sam: Right, because without a container, you've got nothing to hold the wine. That image stuck with me. You need a strong self before you can even begin to let go of it.
• 1:24
Sophie: Exactly. The problem isn't the container. The problem is when you mistake the container for the goal. That's when you become rigid, morally certain, attached to your own particular way of seeing everything.
• 1:37
Sam: And then life cracks it open. Which is the falling part. And this is where I actually pushed back on him a bit when I was reading, because he makes it sound almost inevitable. Like, everybody's container is going to break at some point.
• 1:50
Sophie: I think that's fair, and he'd probably say yes, that's the point. He calls it a spiritual curriculum. The fall can be a divorce, an illness, a betrayal, an addiction, a public failure, or just this slow erosion of meaning that shows up around midlife. Whatever form it takes, the old rules stop working.
• 2:11
Sam: And he has this phrase for that in-between place. Liminal space, right? Where the old is gone and the new hasn't arrived yet.
• 2:19
Sophie: Liminal space, yes. And he's honest that it's uncomfortable. You're not standing on anything solid. But he also says that's where the real transformation happens. It's the threshold.
• 2:32
Sam: Okay, here's the part I really want to get into, because it's the part that got me. He draws a line between good pain and bad pain. And I remember thinking, that sounds like something a monk would say to make suffering sound noble.
• 2:46
Sophie: I know that reaction. But his distinction is actually pretty sharp. Bad pain is the suffering we create through our own denial, our ego, our refusal to grow. It's the pain of fighting reality.
• 3:00
Sam: And good pain, or necessary suffering, is the pain you willingly take on as a teacher. Letting go. Surrendering the need to be right. Letting an old version of yourself die.
• 3:13
Sophie: Yes, and he's careful here. He says it's not masochism. It's just the recognition that transformation always involves a kind of death. The seed has to fall into the ground and die before it can bear fruit.
• 3:27
Sam: That's the line the title comes from, isn't it? The falling isn't down into nothing. It's falling upward into something bigger.
• 3:34
Sophie: That's it. And the second half of life is what you find on the other side. It's a shift from the ego to the soul. From doing to being. From control to surrender. From certainty to mystery.
• 3:48
Sam: And the question changes too. In the first half you're asking, what do I need to do to be safe and successful and loved. In the second half, the question becomes, what is life asking of me?
• 4:00
Sophie: Right. And that's not a question you can answer with a five-year plan. Which is exactly why it terrifies people who are good at five-year plans.
• 4:09
Sam: Yeah, that landed a little close to home. Okay, there's one more concept I want to make sure we hit, because I think it's the most useful thing in the whole book. The shadow self.
• 4:21
Sophie: Oh, the shadow is huge. In the first half, you build your identity by choosing what to include and what to hide. You present the polished version, and you shove down the anger, the envy, the fear, and the weakness.
• 4:37
Sam: And then the fall is often just the shadow erupting. An addiction comes back. A rage surfaces out of nowhere. You betray a value you swear you believe in.
• 4:48
Sophie: And Rohr says that's not a catastrophe. It's an invitation to integrate the shadow. To admit you're not just your good self. You're a complex, contradictory, flawed human being.
• 5:00
Sam: Which is what makes real compassion possible, right? Because once you've seen your own mess, you can't look down on anybody else's.
• 5:08
Sophie: Exactly. He says that's the heart of the whole second-half journey. You can no longer judge others for the sins you've now found in yourself.
• 5:17
Sam: Okay, and then there's the morality piece, because this one surprised me. He basically says the first half is about order, clear rules, right and wrong. And the second half is about something else entirely.
• 5:30
Sophie: He calls it disorder and then reorder. It's a morality of wisdom instead of law. Not about following the rules perfectly, but about being in right relationship with reality.
• 5:42
Sam: Which is why he points to Jesus and Buddha and Rumi as second-half thinkers. They broke the rules when the rules got in the way of love.
• 5:50
Sophie: Yes, and that connects to his idea of non-dual thinking. The first half runs on dualistic thinking. Good and bad, us and them, success and failure. That mind is useful for survival, but it's a terrible tool for understanding depth.
• 6:08
Sam: Non-dual thinking is holding the paradox. Seeing that two contradictory things can both be true. Looking at someone who hurt you and seeing their suffering, not just their sin.
• 6:20
Sophie: And looking at your own failure and seeing not just the shame, but the opening. That's the mind that lets you fall upward, because it doesn't read the fall as a catastrophe.
• 6:30
Sam: There's also this shift in how you relate to God, or to whatever you call the larger thing. First half is kind of transactional. You follow the rules, you pray for favors, you try to earn it.
• 6:43
Sophie: And the fall shatters that image. When your prayers go unanswered and your theology collapses, that's a painful disillusionment. But Rohr says it moves you from believing in God to actually experiencing God.
• 6:57
Sam: A God who's present in the failure and the darkness, not just the good stuff. A God who doesn't love you because you're good, but loves you into goodness.
• 7:06
Sophie: That's the line that stopped me. And he's careful not to romanticize any of this. He says the fall is disorienting and often terrifying. He's just convinced it's the only real door.
• 7:19
Sam: And he gives examples. Mandela walking out of twenty-seven years of prison without bitterness. A recovering addict using their story to help someone else get sober. A parent who lost a child and found a compassion they never knew they had.
• 7:35
Sophie: People who didn't just survive the fall. They were transformed by it. That's the whole thesis in a sentence.
• 7:42
Sam: So here's my takeaway. I think I've spent a lot of my life treating my failures as evidence that something's wrong with me. And Rohr's saying the opposite. The crack isn't the flaw. The crack is where the light gets in, and it might be the most important thing that ever happened to me.
• 7:59
Sophie: And honestly, if you want to sit with these ideas a little longer, the whole library's over on 7minutebooks.com/app, with over six thousand fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language. It's $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 once for lifetime access.
• 8:23
Sam: That's a lot of wisdom for the price of a coffee, honestly.
• 8:27
Sophie: It really is. So the whole point of Falling Upward is that the fall isn't the end of your story. It's the beginning of the real one. We'll see you in the next one.
