[upbeat music] Yada, yada, yada- Woo... and what not-a. Full Spectrum Cycling
• 0:17
show number 68 here, folks. Ooh. Woo. It's, uh, a little toasty in the- [laughs] Toasty in the Everyday Cycles River West, uh, studio today. All is moist. All is moist. It's moist. Sven here. Uh, JK's back from his trip.
• 0:33
Yes. Gallivanting. Yes, yes. Of course, across the table, Tony Burger, as always. Hey. And joining us this week, after a four-hour and eight-minute drive- Roughly. [laughs] Ron Moffett.
• 0:46
Better known to you folks as Chewy, probably. Chewy. That might make more sense. [laughs] Good to have you, man. Thanks. I'm glad I made it down. You, you, you understand why I came down?
• 0:57
I, I have a general clue- Yeah... about why you came down. Actually, actually, I just kinda overshot 'cause I was supposed to stop in Madison to pick up, uh, popcorn from Clary's Downtown for my wife.
• 1:07
That was, that was my get-outta-house-free pass. And it's just a little bit further, so. Yeah, it's like, "Oh, I'm almost there anyway, so I might as well just keep right on going." [laughs] Good on you.
• 1:14
I'm glad you made it over. Yeah. You know, it's, uh, actually, once, once you step outside right now, the wind just started blowing off the lake and it's- It's gonna be nice... cooling off out there a little bit. Yeah.
• 1:22
Yeah, it'll be nice. So, it'll be a good night for riding. I'm looking forward to it. Uh, I haven't... Last time I rode here, I was in a Santa suit. Nice. That was, uh, how long ago? Uh, three years ago. Yeah.
• 1:35
Because it was really nice. It was, uh, like 50 degrees and, uh, there was ch- they estimated 2,500- Yeah, that... It, it's just gotten so huge. Mm-hmm. Yeah. How's it going in Rochester for the Santa Rampage?
• 1:48
Um, the first one... Uh, we, we've been about 45... Uh, nobody rides the whole thing. Everybody kind of jumps in and out, but 45, 50 people. Yeah, the one here is now basically citywide- Mm...
• 1:59
so you just kind of go where you feel like, and you meet up with other folks here and there and- And, and this one's kinda... I...
• 2:06
We did the, uh, we have a starting point, and we ride out to LTS Brewery, and then that's the midpoint. And then on the way back, we hit wherever, and then it's up to you where you wanna go.
• 2:14
It's- We're gonna be doing this a lot today, I think. [laughs] Speaking of that, man. [glasses clink] Top of the hill since we just mentioned LTS Brewery. A lot of hills today. Yeah, a lot of hills today.
• 2:22
Yeah, it's good. Um, our, our first beer out of the, out of the chute here is, uh- Right out of the gate... is an LTS Brewing, uh, blood orange, uh, something something. Sour.
• 2:30
Yeah, it's, uh, on the can b- back behind you there. On the, on the- On the, on the vice... on the vice. If anybody can reach it. Oh, yonder that way. Ah. Sorry. We'll figure out what it is. Sorry. It's, it's- I'm new.
• 2:40
I don't know Don't worry, listener. You'll find out. Yeah. Cool. Our, our listener is anxiously awaiting the, uh- The one listener... the talking of the- Mm-hmm...
• 2:48
Pome Blood Orange Fruchet or Fruchet or Fru- I think it's Fruchet... Fruchet. Does that mean fruit? I don't know what it means. Beer liner, Weiss with- What it means is freaking delicious...
• 2:58
Beer liner, Weiss with pomegranate and blood orange. 5.4% ABV. 5 IBUs. Ah. It's very sweet, yeah? Yeah. Uh, this was filled on 5/13, so it hasn't been around that long. No, no.
• 3:12
Um, and this is a 750-milliliter can these things come in, so- They, uh, are not-... it goes around the table pretty well... they're not doing, uh, growlers in Rochester yet. Oh, okay.
• 3:23
Since, since the, since March, nobody's been able to do a growler. So, is a growler... s- that's 64 ounces, right? Yeah. Yeah, a half gallon. Yeah. Yeah.
• 3:30
The people around here are still doing them some, and crawlers, too- Mm... which I guess is a half-sized growler. Well- Yeah, that's about- And this w- uh, yeah, and these are called crawlers. Okay. Yeah. Right.
• 3:38
Or, or if you go to PEVO in, uh, uh... They're meowlers. Meowlers. [laughs] Tell me about that right meow. [laughs] No, not the meows. We're not starting with the meows. [laughs] Meow. Had my guard down.
• 3:53
Meow, meow, meow. No armor. Yeah. [laughs] Just got me. [laughs] So, how... JK, how was your roll around the lake? Oh, very relaxing. In the Mercedes, mind you. Yes. Not, not on two wheels. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah.
• 4:04
Well, if you're driving a Mercedes, right, you could be on two wheels. Yeah, yeah. It worked out nicely. I mean, did, did, like, half of the, uh, Lake Michigan circle tour but by car, you know. Nice. Whatever.
• 4:16
Did you do the ferry? Yeah, the Badger. Doing. Is that you? What'd you do? [laughs] Start booming. I don't know. Um, somebody calling in? Maybe. Don't know.
• 4:29
That's a- You have a, you have a- That's a noise, that's a noise I'm not familiar with... you have a r- [laughs] Look. Maybe you have a new caller, like- It's a noise I am familiar with...
• 4:35
I'm al- I'm bummed because I always thought this b- you always said that music at the beginning- Yeah... was a real band, and I walk in and it's just you with a button.
• 4:41
[laughs] It's the same button everyone gets on- [laughs]... the Road P- the Roadcaster Pro, so if- Oh, is that- That's, like, the default sound.
• 4:50
It's like, you know, everybody else is gonna put their own jingle on, so it- Sure... sounds different, but that's just the one that comes with it. [laughs] I always kind of like it.
• 4:56
And we just, we liked it, so we just kept using it. It's all right. I think some of these other ones are, uh... Here's, here's one from our friends at Blueberry.
• 5:05
Better known as coronavirus, has spread throughout the world. There are a few ways to help lower the spread of this respiratory disease.
• 5:12
Wash your hands, avoid touching your face, including mouth, nose, and eyes, cover your coughs and sneezes, monitor your symptoms and consult with your doctor, stay at home and away from other sick people except for medical care.
• 5:26
Sicko. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces. For more information, please visit cdc.gov/covid19. Thank you. Bye. Thank you, lady. Um- That was very interesting... so how much of that advice do you think is still good?
• 5:42
I, I don't know. I know. Y- so you know where I live, and it's just... And, and, and, and my, and our second house is in Iowa, so it's two different places and... But Decorah follows Rochester pretty close, you know?
• 5:54
And it's, I, it's... I'm not even sure I wanna get into it 'cause it's m- it just makes your head spin. You get one doctor saying this and then- Yeah... another one from someplace else saying that. Oh, yeah. And it's,
• 6:04
it's, uh- Yeah, I just had my yearly physical yesterday after being put off for three times because of the COVID. They weren't, didn't, weren't doing routine stuff, and now they are. And
• 6:14
this thing is basically just live your life. You're, it likely not gonna be a problem for you if you're not stupid. Yeah. Well, that's, that's- That, that's, that's pretty much what he said... that's, yeah.
• 6:22
I, you know, and, and what varying stages have you consider that is the bigger thing. It's- Yeah... you know, the, um, um, I think- He licked every door handle leaving... yeah.
• 6:31
I'm, I am not swapping spit with any of you today, uh- [laughs]... today, right now. Ah, fuck. Oh, gosh. I, I forgot to mention that we have a couple out in the peanut gallery, too. Zito and, and Puck are outside.
• 6:42
Ah, probably making faces and shit. They probably are swapping spit. Uh- So why did you really come here, though? Welcome, welcome, welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line? Puck. Puck.
• 6:53
[laughs] What's going on? [laughs] I just, I just said we got, we got Puck and, and Zito in the peanut gallery. Yeah, we're just sitting out here.
• 7:01
I just figured we'd listen in while you guys are yick-yacking in, inside in the air conditioning and we're outside. Yeah, there's no air conditioning. It's nicer out there, so- Yeah, yeah...
• 7:08
be happy you're standing out on the sidewalk. Oh, yeah. Jackass. [laughs] Yeah, we got some beers out here. We're just chilling out on the sidewalk. Go Brewers. Yeah. [laughs] Jesus Christ. And now you're done.
• 7:19
Uh, we're- All right I did not come here to hear that shit. Right? Yeah. All right. And you're done. [laughs] And you can listen.
• 7:25
Um, the Brewers were selling, for 50 bucks you can get a cutout of yourself that they will put into the seats- Yep... at count, at, uh, whatever. It's not- Gamblin got one, didn't he?... Country Stadium.
• 7:35
What is it called now? Matt Brewers something. Um, whatever. The Brewer Hole. Taxpayer money, something. Miller, Miller Park for now. Bend over and grab your ankles every time you- Oh, right. Yeah... score.
• 7:45
I think it's, like, next year is, that expires. And it becomes Coors. Uh, probably. Budweiser. Yeah. Yeah, or Coors or something. Which would be- Whoever's got the money-... kind of... Yeah... to put a new sign up.
• 7:53
It would be very difficult for my head to wrap- Maybe American Family will just-... like a secondary Coors Field... put their names on everything in Milwaukee now. Coors, Coors Field number two. Yeah.
• 8:00
[laughs] So yeah, Tony was just saying before I rudely interrupted him with the Puck call, uh, you didn't drive all the way four hours just to sit here and talk about beer. Beer? Well- I'm out of beer... well, we could.
• 8:14
[laughs] No, I came down to bitch about E, E-bikes 'cause I- So this is how dedicated Ron is- Yeah... to E-bike bitching. I, yes. It's, it's- He drove four hours to bitch about it- To come down here because-...
• 8:24
and eight minutes... because you guys seem to be, like, the epicenter and it's gotta come to a halt. [laughs] It's not coming to a halt, Ron. You bought popcorn. He bought popcorn.
• 8:32
It's not running, it's not coming to a halt, Ron. Is that pickle popcorn? Yes, it is. carrying it over in my own fucker. You are disgusting but you make yourself better. [laughs] Oh, yeah.
• 8:40
We'll talk, w- can we just, can we do this tomorrow instead? Yeah. 'Cause I'm eating pickle popcorn right now. Oh. It even smells great, callers. You would not believe this. This is so much better than pickle chips.
• 8:51
[laughs] This is, this is incredible. Oh my God. Where did you- Where did you, yeah. Where did you get this? Trader Joe's. Oh, I'm getting those. Oh, yeah. They're fucking awesome. That's fantastic. Oh, anyway, so
• 9:03
you guys all... No, it's, yes, it's going away because I'm gonna, I'm gonna start lighting fires. [laughs] And I, and it's horrible to say. E- maybe what do you li- don't like about them? Everything.
• 9:14
I've, I've j- Well- You, you know how I don't like carbon? Yeah. Oh, I agree with you there completely. Just E-bikes, E-bikes are a step above carbon. It, it's just... And I, and I... Okay.
• 9:24
I don't know, I think I kinda know why I don't like them, because my wife despises them. Huh. Um, have you ridden the Trout Run Trail? Uh, i- in, uh- In Decorah... in Decorah? Yeah. Yeah.
• 9:36
So it's got s- a little bit of climbing to it. Sure. And we're on our tandem and we're not fast, and some prick will always come by in an E-bike.
• 9:45
And the latest incident was a guy came by us, and as we were climbing to the last, to the peak let's say, um, he comes by and he's giving us shit about dropping the brake and, you know, let go of the brake and stuff, and it just pisses Sue off to no end.
• 9:59
So we get to the top and there's a bit of a drop, and then there's a, there's a, s- bunch of switchbacks that go down. And we literally caught him before he got to the switchbacks. [laughs] Not trying to.
• 10:07
We're just carrying on a conversation, and we caught him and we, and we, and my brakes on my, uh, tandem are squeaky, so I squeaked all the way behind him. Not intentionally, it just happened.
• 10:16
[laughs] So we, we, we passed him. We passed him on the flats, and I'm like, "We're a little faster on the flats, and downhill we're way faster, as you can tell." And he just kinda mumbled something.
• 10:25
We passed him, and then he followed us in and we got to the trout hatchery and had to stop, and, um, we took off from there and he was right on our tail then. He was drafting us, and Sue was so fucking mad.
• 10:40
[laughs] She's like, she's like, "I'm not gonna let him see that I'm working hard, but get fucking going." [laughs] Okay. But to be fair, about tandem drafting, that is how,
• 10:54
uh, Scott Dixon won Paris-Brest-Paris, was drafting the tandems for- Was it really?... a good chunk of the race.
• 11:00
It's, i- it's, it's bec- it's, to a point it's bec- well, you're on a fucking E-bike and you're drafting anybody? [laughs] And then he called, and then- Okay. Okay. Yeah...
• 11:07
and then, and then, and then, okay, before we got to that point, he had already called me fatty, which he's not wrong, but at the same time, we just passed you, you know?
• 11:16
And, and the best was is he started drafting us and we actually dusted him. Was it Deke? No. [laughs] No. Deke won't ride the trail because there would be people out there. [laughs] Yeah. I, well, I d- You know, I-...
• 11:26
I think that there's spots for E-bikes and spots for not E-bikes. Yeah. You're, you're picking one specific- No, no, no, no... you know? No. And, and it's, and it's, and it, so it's the...
• 11:35
I kinda understand why they're around. Okay, Sav rides an E-bike. Because if you've ever been to his house, he lives at the top of the steepest freaking hill in- See?...
• 11:44
northern Minnesota, or northern Minne- Iowa, I think, you know? And so I kinda get it 'cause it's his transportation- Right... and he runs back to work. I get that.
• 11:51
So that means that Deke is smarter than Sav because he sold Sav the house- Exactly... and moved down onto the flats. Moved down to the flats. Yeah. Right. Sure. [laughs] Sav did.
• 11:58
Um, and, and I think that might be Sav's only bike right now. Huh. Is a, is a long-haul trucker with, uh- With the e-assistant. Yeah. Motor electric.
• 12:05
And then, okay, and then, and then there's my next bitch about E-bikes. So- I have friends that have e-bikes. Yeah. And I try not to talk to them if I can help it. I know. But, um- Fuck you. [laughs] Oh, I'm sorry.
• 12:16
I'm out loud voice again. You should have let him ride the shitty route here instead of giving him the nice- Yeah, no shit... the, the nice route here. I would have been fine with that. I'm sure you would have.
• 12:23
I, but it... So it's, um... So yeah, you got a ton of stuff on your bike and you use it for commuting. I really don't have a problem.
• 12:31
There was, you know, years ago, Deke built a wheel for a, a doctor, or not doctor, a professor at Luther that had quit riding bikes because he was in his 70s and he couldn't get up over the hill. Right. And now he can.
• 12:42
I totally get it. Um, I don't agree with the fact that I'm gonna get an e-bike, and there's a couple people that we've talked to about that,
• 12:50
um, that have bought e-bikes and say, "I'm gonna ride this until I get into shape," and then they just ride their e-bikes. And I don't, I'm not gonna get in the argument about you gotta get in better shape than that.
• 13:02
I just can't do it. Like throttle only or pedal assist? Pedal assist. Thr- I, I don't know. See, pedal assist you're still working? Yeah. Yeah. I, I, I don't know.
• 13:11
So, you know, I mean, you're, this is the f- I did not know this is the first time you've been inside the shop here, but, um, you see how much room we have, and I can't really stock even a line of Surly Long Haul Truckers in here just 'cause there's no room.
• 13:24
Mm. So as much as, I mean, there's 35 frames on the wall, so if somebody wants something custom built, we got that covered.
• 13:30
But the e-bike thing, getting people commuting and going to work and not getting sweaty and all that stuff, and hopefully taking a bike they already own and upgrading it with a relatively inexpensive system would be something that the shop can do that other shops are not doing well in Milwaukee.
• 13:48
Well, no, and I understand that. And in fact, um, I... So my,
• 13:54
the guy that I give the most shit to, Jeff Lucy, 'cause he, he'll probably [laughs] fucking listen since I said his name, um, is a, is a nurse for Olmsted Medical, and him and his wife, I believe is also a nurse there, um, live at the top of a hill.
• 14:08
So when they put in a 10-hour day and they w- they're working the testing sites, so they- Oh, boy... they've got kind of stressful long days. Sure. And then at the end of their ride- No activity well...
• 14:17
it's straight uphill to their house. I don't remember how far it is, but it's a climb. So they both... So Jeff bought an, a, a, a, uh, a specialized, um, I don't remember which model it was. It's unimportant.
• 14:31
Is it the- One of the middle ones... commuter-ish ones or the- Yeah, the commu-... not the downhill mountain bike one? No, no, no, the, the, the commuter one. Yeah. And, and- The Rover or something?...
• 14:37
you know, he's like, he's like, "I, I ride to work and then when I come home," and, and it's, it's a l- it's a pedal assist only. Mm-hmm. So when he's pedaling, he has to pedal.
• 14:44
And, you know, and he's very gracious when he rides with our group rides and we go drinking beer and stuff. He doesn't jump in front and make fun of us, unless I start giving him shit, and then he will.
• 14:52
But, um, then, then his wife did not want to buy another bike 'cause she had plenty, so she bought a kit out of a company out of Chicago, and I'm not gonna say the name, but they suck dog shit. Yeah.
• 15:08
And I- There's lots of those out there. And, and, and it- Yeah, that's unfortunate... it was a front wheel. Uh, she, well, she put it on the front wheel.
• 15:12
They put the front wheel on, so I didn't do that, but it took me forever to mount everything. It's made to go on- Snap the fork? No, it's made to go on a Walmart bike. You, like the- Yeah...
• 15:20
the, the pedal assist piece, you literally have to cut it and super glue it or wire tie it. That, yeah, that we know. You know which one I'm talking about?
• 15:28
I think that's kind of, that's kind of the system on that one, which has been the bane of my existence. Yeah. But, uh- And- Oh, yeah... and then the crank arm's so close you can't do it. That, that...
• 15:34
Yeah, and that's, that's the guy, that's customer-supplied parts. Yeah, but she- So-... bought the kit. Right, and that's- Well, I believe in kits, but you gotta get the right kit from the right place. Yeah.
• 15:44
And that, that's- I agree... where we've done the research to know what- Right... the stuff that actually works is, and- And we're, we're doing- And we, I'm, I have a philosophy.
• 15:51
You know, part of my philosophy is if you're gonna buy one, buy the batteries we suggest, and then any time you ride by you can swap a battery, get a charged one. Yep.
• 16:00
And they're modular, so if you have two batteries because that's all you need to get to- Sorry, I couldn't pass it up. [laughs]... two, that's, that's all you need to get to work and back.
• 16:10
Normally you're gonna use just two, but if you're gonna go on a longer trip and you wanna rent a couple, you can get more batteries because you can just increase your capacity by buying additional batteries.
• 16:18
But, but there a- there again- Or renting... what are you, what are you ta- what, what does the battery go for? 100 bucks. Buck 40. Really? That's not- Wait, yeah, I'm sorry. Buck 40. Buck 40.
• 16:25
I mean, some of these batteries are $400 to $600. Yeah, the, but they're also- That's why the modular batteries are so much cooler. Yeah, they're also not very, uh, there's not very much capacity to them.
• 16:32
They're only two and a half amp hours, but- Uh, which is why you have to have more than one... 2.71. Which is why you need... So okay, so you need two of them. You, you- 2.95... you have to have two to run.
• 16:41
Can't run on one. You have to use two. Unfortunate but true. I have never used more than two of them, and I've never run out of batteries. Um, I used three and it was silly.
• 16:48
[laughs] And, well, I basically never use it 'cause mine's got a throttle only. And I love that. The only time I use it is when I'm tired at the end of the day and nobody's around and I wanna get somewhere quick.
• 16:56
[laughs] I, I actually thought- It's like-... I actually thought throttle only was stupid. I thought pedal assist makes more sense, but you might be right. A throttle only might be the way to go.
• 17:06
Not that I, I agree that you still should have the stupid fucking things, however, it makes more sense to me to just do the throttle only. But one of the- When you need it. So go ahead.
• 17:13
I need to be on a relatively- But you have to be a relatively, you have to be a relatively good cyclist to do a throttle only I think. The pedal assist is, like, basically for anyone. Right.
• 17:22
And the problem, the main problem I have with them is that you can turn them up to 30 miles an hour or 28 miles an hour, and people are not used to riding bikes that fast. Right. Well- They can get into trouble.
• 17:32
So- So if, if you're not a seasoned cyclist, it may not be for you. Um, um- Going, going back to the one that I built for this girl, it w- or that sh- I put together for her.
• 17:39
She bought it and I bought, I put the kit together for her. Uh, there's several problems. First of all, she's- But you hate e-bikes. I know, and I did it for her grudgingly. [bell rings] All right.
• 17:47
Okay, what's the next one? All right. Okay, I- Interrupted the segment. That, that, that, we're- Top of the hill once again... what's that one now? Uh- Trump's the Con.
• 17:52
Well, this one is, this one is, um- That one's gone... Hallucination. Hazy DIPA. It's a double IPA by the way. Yeah, it, it tastes like a double IPA. It's delicious. 9.3% ABV. Ooh. [laughs] That's danger.
• 18:05
72- Going to be falling down- Hey... criminal. Give me my damn popcorn. 72 IBUs. I got a watch running this. This was bottled or canned just a few days ago on 6/29. Wow.
• 18:16
Um, this is super tasty That's delicious Yeah, this is dangerous- Yeah, that, that-... because it doesn't taste to me- Yeah... like as big a beer as it is I, and I'm not a double IPA guy, but I really do like that one.
• 18:24
Yeah, that's easy drinking. Yeah. It's been a hot day. Got a little bit of, uh, roastiness to it. Mm-hmm. Uh, Brandon's a very good brewer, I think. He's, he, he prides him- I'd say, so far so good. Yeah. Yeah.
• 18:34
Well, you know, with Kitty Corner to us- No... we've got Black Husky, which is one of our favorites What the hell did you just open now, Nick?
• 18:38
Uh, the one I just opened now is Inspiration, which is an American IPA, and I can't read the rest of it 'cause it's too small.
• 18:43
You know, we, we gotta figure out how to get Chewy here more often 'cause- Oh, with this shit?... this shit is- Oh no, wait till it... God damn So we are...
• 18:49
W- I'm just trying to rifle through this shit because we wanna get to the last one, which is the, uh- [laughs] Why are you laughing? 'Cause we're all gonna die. For the name. The name itself. So, okay.
• 19:01
So I'm gonna- It's reminding me of the Old Old Nick, if you remember Old Nick that was like a barley wine that was- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah That was like, oh.
• 19:09
We'll, uh, we'll, we'll bring that one up when we hit that one 'cause that's gonna- Ugh... make an early night for everybody. [laughs] But,
• 19:18
so, so it- So it sounds like you're kind of on the fence about these No, I, uh, there are plenty of the others-...
• 19:21
you came here to bitch about them, but there's certain situations where maybe an e-bike- And where there are cases... No, I...
• 19:26
No, because all you guys in the bike shop business are too freaking busy to do anything, so I agreed to build it up for her. And, and, and, you know, and she came across with very good reasons.
• 19:35
I, the reasons that I would agree that person should have an e-bike. Okay. Right? Uh, I don't agree with any e-bike that takes you off road. Hmm. Sorry, I don't agree with any of them at all. I m- Hmm...
• 19:46
and, and mostly, again, because the people I know that are riding them and riding them off road- Are douchey... yes. And they, oh, no, no, not gonna say- Wait, wait, wait a second...
• 19:53
they're douchey, but, but- To be fair, I th- I don't know if Colin couldn't call in, but I'll tell you Colin's point about what you just said. Okay. Yeah. Let me hear it Colin's... and I agree with Colin 100%- Totally...
• 20:02
'cause I've done this in Vegas at Bootleg Canyon. You use the e-bike to go up the hill,
• 20:06
which you would normally be shuttled up the hill in a diesel pickup truck with five other guys with their bikes hanging off the back- Yep, yep... so that you can bomb the bike park.
• 20:14
But with, uh, with one of Jeff from, uh, uh, All Mountain in, uh, Boulder, Nevada there, Boulder City or whatever the hell that place is called right by Bootleg Canyon, you can get up to the top at 35 miles an hour, turn the motor off, and blast down the hill on a full suspension bike that- That's genius...
• 20:30
yeah. No. [laughs] No. No. Otherwise, you're shuttling or you're spending two hours riding up to the top of that thing to get a 10-minute run in. So earn your fucking ride, I don't care.
• 20:40
[laughs] I'm t- I, I'm not giving in on that one. I don't care. Yeah, yeah. And I, I... The commuting one, it bugs m- okay, so the other reason it bugs me, here's how bad it is. So we were in Texas a couple weeks ago.
• 20:53
We went to my kid's house, and- COVID central? Yeah. Yeah. [laughs] We were, we were there for that shit when they shut the town down again.
• 20:59
And, um, but we're hanging out at my kid's house, and he's gone away from the bike industry 'cause he used to work at QBP, and now he's into Harleys, and he has a Harley.
• 21:07
But, uh, we walk in the garage and there sits a... Ever- Yeah... sorry. Ever seen a Honda Monkey? M- a pit bike kind of thing? K- kind of. It's, it's reminiscent of the old, uh- Scater... Trail 90s. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
• 21:18
Yeah. Scat- but it's a 125. Yeah. And I jumped on it and I rode it, and it's like, "This is awesome. I need to buy one of these," you know? And I was...
• 21:25
And he lined me up with one, and I was all ready to go, and then I got to thinking, it's like, "So what am I gonna use this for? Everything I would use it for I ride my bicycle to." That's really funny.
• 21:35
"So I really don't need it." I mean, it's still... I would just use it for, just for racing around on, but I don't need it, which brought me back to, "Oh, what about an e-bike?"
• 21:44
Oh, fuck e-bikes, 'cause it's the same thing. I don't fucking need it. What if you made that an e-bike? No, I still wouldn't ride it because I, I have a bicycle. I have, I have a couple bicycles- [laughs]...
• 21:52
and I can kind of figure out how to get someplace without anybody helping me. I mean, if somebody wants to push me on the back going really bad- Oh, I bet that iPhone now sucks... no. Yeah, the other- Don't-...
• 22:01
iPod makes me ride faster as I get away from it. Tony's an iPod hater, or an iPhone hater. Why? Even though there's one sitting right there. 'Cause he d- didn't drink the Kool-Aid. And I'm an Android guy.
• 22:10
Drink the am- apple juice? Someone's got an opener for that, young man. Oh. So I, I don't really think you've made too much of a hate argument for, for e-bikes. Well, okay, so, so here's- I was expecting a brawl...
• 22:22
so, no, no, no, so here's my point. Point. Counter point. So what is, what is, is my hate the people that ride them? Well, you know, there's pe- there- Maybe some of the douchey ones...
• 22:30
yeah, there's douchey people everywhere No, just anybody. I mean, I see somebody on an e... Okay, I'm riding into work one day. No, it was, I was just riding into town to go drink beer probably one day. And- You?
• 22:40
Tomato, tomato- Possibly. Yeah... you know, it's all- So this guy rides by. They come acro- we're on bike, city bike trails, right? And he comes by me, and he's on one, and this is the weirdest fucking thing ever.
• 22:50
He's on one. He's got a helmet on. The two kids sitting on the back of it do not. Hmm. And I don't know which one was the cargo one, right? [laughs] She, she had a, she had a light blue one, he had an orange one.
• 23:01
I don't know what kind- Like a Yuba or something? Black- They look like Yubas, but I don't know if Yuba does that Xtracycle does it, too, though. So- Yeah. Xtra makes an orange and light blue.
• 23:07
No, it wasn't an Xtra 'cause I think I'd have recognized that. With the little 20-inch rear wheel and- Yeah. No, it wasn't an Xtra. Oh, okay. Yeah, this was, this was like two 24-inch wheels on it, I think. Huh.
• 23:14
But anyway- Huh... so they come by- Almost...
• 23:16
and they cross the bridge, and they get ahead of me, and I'm like riding along on my single speed, and I'm like, "Well, I should be passing those guys by now with those kids on there," and then I, 'cause I didn't realize there were...
• 23:26
So she had one on the back of hers. He had two in the back of theirs. And I finally caught him at fucking 17 miles an hour 'cause I hadn't, for some reason I didn't know.
• 23:34
[laughs] And I'm like, and I passed him, and when I passed him the guy's like, he goes, "Yeah, sorry, I'm cheating." 'Cause I see him on the trail riding his regular bike all the time, and I'm like...
• 23:42
He goes, "It's the only way I can get my wife to ride a bike." And I go, "No, it's not." Sure it is. [laughs] Fucking you haul three kids and her ride her own bike then. You don't need to... I don't- That's...
• 23:51
Tony's got that plan going on... okay, here's the thing. Maybe here there's places where you live, where you live that you need it. There's no place in fucking Rochester- There's no need involved here. It's want...
• 24:01
no, it's fucking lazy. No, it is not. Yes, it is. It's not. I mean, if you put in... Okay. [laughs] If you put in a 16-hour day, if you put in a 16-hour day
• 24:12
pounding rocks someplace, fine, and, and you had to ride your bike home. That's not the case. People are buy, people buy e-bikes, and then they don't fucking do anything else but-... cruise around.
• 24:24
They, they maybe go to work and they don't wanna get sweaty. Well, you know what? Get fucking sweaty because eventually you won't get sweaty on that ride in. You'll get faster- Well, but, but-...
• 24:32
and you still won't get sweaty... but you also will, maybe they wanna get sweaty but ride twice as far. Then ride twice as far. But you'll, but you get there in half the time. Maybe they can without the e-bike.
• 24:43
Or they get there in half the time. [laughs] No. Just because I'm old and almost retiring doesn't mean that I have, like, oodles of time to do shit.
• 24:51
I still have places I need to be because the bars will close before I get there otherwise. And I still- See, that's another reason to have an e-bike. No. Get there fast, goddammit. I can still...
• 24:59
There's beer controls- All right, but they're motorized- Yes... and you may be able to get more, more, uh- Sue and-... in trouble... Sue and I, Sue, Sue and I on a tandem can beat a guy on his, on his e-bike.
• 25:07
Well, that's your wife being a machine and you just, you know, sitting around drinking beer. Have you ever seen my wife? This cable is bigger around on the legs than my wife is. Don't insult her like that.
• 25:16
She, she's a skinny little thing. She's, I... It's nice having her on the back of the tandem because there's not a lot of weight back there to drag with. So, so she cap- do you captain, she stokes? Yes.
• 25:24
She- That means she's the power. Yeah. There's no power there. That's exactly how that works. It's like dragging your, it's like dragging- Why would you have a stoker without any power?
• 25:31
She, she's gonna listen to this and wanna die. She's gonna kill me. [laughs] But it, it's, it's so- She, she, she let you come here. G- she did. Because I bought her popcorn on the way here.
• 25:41
A- a- and by the way- Was it, was it Trader Joe's pickled popcorn? Pickled... No, I'm buying that for myself on the way back. [laughs] I'll eat, I'll eat six bags.
• 25:47
I got four, I got four hours to polish off a case of that shit. Yeah, no problem. [laughs] That's pretty delicious. [laughs] Who knew that the Trader, the Trader Joe- Oh... there was some bounty in that damn store.
• 25:57
No, because, because the pickled chips are God awful. I love them. Oh, yeah. Well, I hate pickles in general. Yeah, he doesn't do pickles. Oh, no. I love the chips.
• 26:03
I didn't think about that until I- Let me try one of those. I, I'm gonna try some-... until I got here. Holy crap... pickle flavored Pringles. Hold on, hold on. Da, da, da, da, da, da.
• 26:10
If, if it's, if it's like anything else pickle, I know I'm gonna hate it, but... I hate it. [laughs] So that means it's good. If you liked it, it would be no good. There'd be no flavor to it, right? Right.
• 26:20
Right, it wouldn't taste like pickles. Yeah. That's funny, though. I like relish- Yeah... and other pickle-oriented things, but- So let me ask you a question. And, and, and, and I think this is the evil part of e-bikes.
• 26:32
The E. That's why they're called E. Yeah. Ah. Got that? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like on Blade, the evil bike. Okay. Oh. This is- Evil. This is the- Did, did we talk to each other this morning when we dressed?
• 26:41
Because- Oh, isn't that cute. Aw. That was serendipity, baby. [laughs] I, uh- Evil socks. Yeah. Get over there. But, so the inter- Getting all emotional... the inter- [laughs] That pickle's going straight to your head.
• 26:54
[laughs] Don't... I've never seen a pickle affect anybody like that before. Well, that's a male, anyway. Well, right. Exactly. [laughs] But so it helps your business, right? Well, it hasn't yet.
• 27:06
I'm working on a model that it may. It will. Because this whole thing- So you're one of the better shops, then... this is, this is more of a hobby because I used to have a job where I made a lot of money- B-...
• 27:15
until the freaking COVID came. Now, this shop actually has to support itself. You know, I mean, when I was doing my real thing, this was like, I'm doing this because I like doing it.
• 27:26
Now, it needs to start supporting itself. [laughs] Well, and that's- Which, which is where some of this other-... which is, which is not why you buy a bike shop, right? Well, no. Just bike shop. But when you, when- No.
• 27:35
You wanna make a million dollars in a bike shop- You know what? Our- Yeah. Start with two million, right? Yeah...
• 27:39
our, our industry will not come back until September of 2021 at the earliest, which is, we do the Super Bowl, we do rock concerts. Right. We do the biggest trade shows in Las Vegas.
• 27:49
Those are not coming back anytime soon- No... because of the amount of people there. And, and, but at the same time, who do you think is gonna come back faster? Somebody like you that, that supports casual riding.
• 28:01
Um, I, I don't mean casual by that you ride around the block and drink beer, but I mean more an average rider, um, that wants a nice bike, 'cause you have nice bikes in here.
• 28:11
Or, or the guys that are, the shops that are race or- oriented. I don't think they're gonna come back as fast. I think you have a better chance of making go... I mean, so- Well, yeah, well-...
• 28:20
so a general shop in town, in town here now, what's their wait time? If you took a bike to them today, how long before it'd be fixed? Two months. I, yeah. Usually. Yeah. Four to six weeks? Yeah.
• 28:29
Yeah, that's what they're, that's what they are advertising too. Something like that. Yeah. Ri- which is why,
• 28:33
I don't know if I dare say this, um, my little shop in the back of my garage, I have never been this fucking busy before. It's ridiculous.
• 28:39
And I, and I have, and I've always been the guy that's, "Yeah, you bought the Walmart bike. Let me see what I can do with it, and that's fine."
• 28:44
[laughs] I've turned them away now because I can't st- I can't work on another one. Well, I pretty much- I-...
• 28:49
w- first we w- I was normally on a we service what we sell model, meaning if you have a brand I sell, I'll service it. I'm working on any kind of basically bike shop quality bike. I don't work on- Right. Right. No, I-...
• 29:01
run-of-the-mill crap, unless the guy is just so destitute that he needs my help and I'll help him out, but. And, and, and sadly,
• 29:07
and n- not to anybody's fault, um, had the industry s- be able to see this coming, they could've stocked up on bikes and you could've, you could've, you could've driven the, uh, the, uh, Walmart bike business out of, out of there if you'd had bikes to sell.
• 29:21
  Possible. Mm-hmm. I, I just think this is, like, pent-up demand. I don't know if it's pent-up demand.
• 29:27
It, everybody that bought a bike during this thing and why the bike shops are all really busy right now, when things, quote-unquote, "get back to normal", are, are 20% of the people gonna keep riding the bikes? Yeah.
• 29:39
And are 80% of them gonna go for sale? Yeah. Right. You brought- And then the bike shops are not gonna be selling jack shit- Right... for the next 18 months. 'Cause they're gonna be all Craigslist bikes.
• 29:47
You brought, you brought that up a couple podcasts ago. And, and- Right. Which, and, and what I do here is much, a much different model. So hopefully people will still wanna upgrade from the bike they bought, the 20%.
• 29:57
Right. So- Or the, or the 2% of the 20. The- So what, what- I'm, I'm a 1%-er, dammit... so let's, let's say the bike industry jumped, business-wise you jumped, um, 150%. Just throwing a number out there, just so...
• 30:11
What, what percentage of that do you think is gonna keep riding, th- those people that came in? I, uh, people that come in here, all of them. All of them, right.
• 30:19
But people that went to a normal shop and bought their kids bikes 'cause- Yeah... the gym was closed- 5%. Right... 20%. Maybe 15. Do you think it's that high? I bet you it's lower than that. You think... Yeah.
• 30:25
I, I hope- Maybe it's 5% to 10%... I hope it's 20%. That's what, that's what the bike indus- I would love that. Yeah. That, that's what the bike industry as a whole hopes. They hope it's 20%. Oh, okay.
• 30:33
Because that's 20% more bikes that are gonna need service every year or every other year. Right, right, right. Yeah. And service is- But-... service is the thing. You know- Yeah, that's where you make your money...
• 30:40
I've got, I had bikes coming in here...
• 30:42
that ha- that are 20 years old that were never ridden, and now they wanna ride them again, so they need new tires, and they need new brake pads, and they need the, the wear- Bearings and-...
• 30:49
items replaced because it's been sitting. But you can tell it wasn't ridden back then. Yeah, they were immaculate.
• 30:55
So, it's gonna be ridden now while they can't, you know, do whatever other activity they would be doing, and then it's gonna sit in the garage again and- Well, and that's the sad part... I'm gonna buy it for cheap.
• 31:04
Here's a, here's an interesting story about bikes... so, so, so the reason I brought this up was there's no fucking way you're selling those people an e-bike. [laughs] Am I right?
• 31:17
Um- Tony, Tony's- Most of them, yeah, I hear that... Tony is still on my side. No, I'm not. [laughs] You guys are still on the loser side. Well, oh, no, no, JK was- Oh, I'm just, I'm just in the popcorn gallery.
• 31:26
[laughs] Yeah. [laughs] And also- I'm not an e-bike guy at all... JK would, JK doesn't have e-bike, e-bike blood.
• 31:30
You know, I think that a certain percentage of those people- Oh, no, JK's got, he's got, he's got me looking at... What the fuck are those things you sent me the picture of? The what?
• 31:38
The last bike you sent me after, you, that you wanted to build. The, what the hell is that thing called? Oh, a green, like a green machine? Green machine. Is it the green machine? Maybe it was. Like a Hot Wheel?
• 31:50
Or not Hot Wheel. Like, not the Big Wheel- No. Yeah... but the green machine? The green machine. Yeah. You use your arms. Yeah. I think that was gonna be the next thing anyway. That'd be fun.
• 31:57
[laughs] Do you know, do you know- They make them, and you drift them. They're awesome. Why not? I, that's- You can e-assist them too. Do you know that? So you can sh- sh- get the fuck outta here. I've had it.
• 32:05
[laughs] What about the e- e-assist recumbent? Like, we- Oh, yeah... there, there was a guy riding an e-assist recumbent, and- Really? I, no, I was just making that up... Black Lives Matter- I didn't fucking know this...
• 32:15
he was riding a Black Lives Matter- Excuse me... um- You could put that shit motor on anything you wanted to... excuse me. Uh, excuse me. Welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line? Hello.
• 32:27
[laughs] You may know me. Well, that sounded cold. My name's Colin. [laughs] You, [laughs] you, "My name's Colin. You may know me." [laughs] Nope, never heard of you. You, did you ever read The Drink? I drank you.
• 32:37
Did you ever... Oh, never mind. I'm gonna go into a P- Patrick Rothfuss book because that's the opening- Anyways... line of one of the, the books. I'm in the bathroom while I'm at dinner with my girlfriend.
• 32:45
Oh, is that why it took you so long to- And, uh, I didn't know you guys were gonna start. [laughs] Yeah. Well, you're the star. Hey, we've, we've been talking about e-bikes for the last 33 minutes, man.
• 32:52
I know you're the star. I know you're gonna talk e-bikes, too. Honest to God, you spend more time in the bathroom than anybody I know. Uh, yeah. [laughs] You know, you get it out all at once.
• 33:00
Don't, don't have to go back, you know, the rest of the day. [laughs] Uh, so you guys talking about e-bikes here, or what? Yeah, yeah, we are. Yeah. Let's, let's see here your poor excuse. [laughs] Okay.
• 33:13
So here's my, here's my, here's my corkscrew of why e-bikes can be a good thing. For trails that are generally only accessible by a shuttle in very mountainous regions of the country,
• 33:33
uh, the e-bike, you can just go ride those trails by yourself with an e-bike and just self-shuttle up the dirt road, up the four-by-four road, up whatever, you know, trails that are too steep to ride up.
• 33:48
But they have, like, a four-by-four- You couldn't take your VW camper up there? Is that what you're saying? You can't, you can't get your- No... your, your camper van up those trails? No.
• 33:56
Dude, you, you could not get a stock Tacoma up those trails. Uh, but yeah, I mean, like, for, for stuff that's just way beyond steep like that, and especially trails that, you know, like, it's either
• 34:14
drive up for 20 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour, whatever, you know, or pedal up for a little bit longer, um, some guys- Oh, just a little bit longer to pedal up?
• 34:29
[laughs] Is that what you're telling me, it's only a little bit longer to pedal up it? You lazy bastard. Ouch. [laughs] Well, I mean, I don't have an e-bike.
• 34:40
I don't work at a bike shop where I get to borrow one, but friends of mine do, and they, they agree that it's super fun.
• 34:46
I did g- [laughs] I did ride an e-bike in, uh, in Moab on Slickrock Trail 'cause it's like the only trail you can ride it on. And? And I was going up this hill.
• 34:56
It was a demo, it was a demo program thing, and I was going up this hill, and this k- [laughs] this guy shouts at me, "Learn how to pedal!" [laughs] And- I think that was Mosshead.
• 35:07
He was standing on the side of the trail... because you used to know how to pedal. Yeah. [laughs] Oh, no, I used to, yeah, then I completely forgot since I moved to Colorado, so. Brown ambrose.
• 35:16
Hey, uh, shout out, shout out to Milwaukee here 'cause Colin is at, uh, one of the- Mader's... one of the best restaurants that's been around the longest- Right now? Yeah... in Milwaukee.
• 35:26
Are you in the bathroom at Mader's? He's in the ma-bathroom at Mader's, which is- Yeah, I'm sitting in a shitter. Nobody else is in here, so I can speak loud. Are you having schnitzel? That's cool.
• 35:33
'Cause they're using Schnauzer. Uh, yeah, I'm getting the, I'm getting the Tour of Germany plate for two. It's schnitzel, ribs, sauerkrauten, um, cabbage, and I believe knockwurst or rice perhaps.
• 35:47
Ah, we'll be right there. And I'm sitting here with you guys? Right? We'll be right there, dude. So, hey, did you get to see- You have to go upstairs to the Hummel and get a, to the, uh, little Hummel, uh, gift shop...
• 35:55
no, so we just got, we just got drinks, and I'm gonna try to take some time and walk around the restaurant with, uh, my girlfriend who hasn't been here before- So, uh-... and show her all the cool shit that's in here...
• 36:03
well, see Baron von Richthofen's table because that is kickass. Uh, it's right in the front. Yeah, I know. It's right there. Oh, is it really? Right when you walk... Yeah.
• 36:10
The, the bloody red baron's table is at Ma- Is it really? Is at Mader's. I asked, I asked the waitress. I said, like, "Hey- How did you guys never show me that before?... I'll ask about it."
• 36:17
So Colin, I have two questions. Yeah. First of all- Yes... how did you get a girlfriend? Ouch. And second- Uh-... are we going out for breakfast tomorrow?... she's mine. [laughs] Are we going out for breakfast tomorrow?
• 36:31
What's that? What's the last thing? You, you wanna go out for breakfast tomorrow before I go back to Rochester? No. Breakfast. [laughs] What do you mean no? Dick. [laughs] Breakfast, breakfast with Chewy.
• 36:42
I couldn't, I couldn't, I couldn't hear you, but- He wants, he wants to go to breakfast, dude. Do you wanna go to breakfast tomorrow? Oh. Yeah. [laughs] What time? I don't care. You call me, we'll go.
• 36:54
We'll go- I'll call you? Yeah. All right. Give me a call and we'll go for breakfast whenever you get up. All right. I got nothing going until I go back to town tomorrow, so. Go have fun. Okay. All right.
• 37:01
Say hi to- Okay... your girlfriend and your ma. Yeah, yeah. Liar, you don't have a girlfriend. Yeah, I will. And, uh, don't worry, Chewy- Be happy. E-bikes still suck... uh, [laughs] e-bi- e-bikes still s- [laughs] yeah.
• 37:16
So there has been instances where- See... you do blow past me on the final part of the trail on an e-bike. See, everybody's got that story, but that doesn't matter. It does too. Colin, you're right.
• 37:24
See, you, all you're doing is sticking up for your friend. Stop it. [laughs] Right. Did you just flush the toilet? And also wipe your butt. Yeah. Thanks, buddy.
• 37:35
I need, I need a good excuse to call the radio sto- the radio show. I love it. I think it's fantastic. [laughs] Right on. And man up, tell her what you're really doing. Yeah. Uh, take it easy, fuckers. Right.
• 37:45
Drink more beer. Fuck you. Love you. Bye. Copy that. [laughs] All right, Colin. Peace. Talk to you tomorrow, Colin.
• 37:50
So, uh, I don't know if everybody knows, Colin lives in Denver area, so they got some mountain things out there. Yeah, they do. And, and, and he's a- He rides a lot of mountain biking type things...
• 37:58
and he's a really good downhill rider too. Oh, yeah. He's, I mean, don't get me wrong- He's very technical...
• 38:02
he's a, yeah, he's, he- I gotta dig up some photos of him hucking an ice cream truck because that is really [laughs]... Oh, yeah... he's, he's getting mega. But it's fun to pick on him because he's such a nice guy.
• 38:10
Well, and he weighs like, what, eight pounds? So yeah, so him having an e-bike makes sense because there's not enough meat there to fucking pedal anything up a hill.
• 38:17
[laughs] He, he, he looks like two rubber bands- So again-... and a watermelon... so again, if you're, if you're handicapped [laughs] like Colin- Like, like Craig Smith...
• 38:26
or Craig Smith or Colin or Tony or whoever, you should probably have an e-bike. Did you just flick me off with both fingers? Oh, dick. Is that, is, is that your final- Oh, now I did it with both fingers...
• 38:36
is that your final thought on e-bikes? I mean, we've been, we've been going- But-... we've been going for a while here. You wanna- Yeah, it's been pretty good. It's been pretty good. I know.
• 38:43
I, and this, and this'll never die. That's the problem because- [laughs] Oh, no, they're here to stay- No... and they're just gonna keep growing.
• 38:47
And because the industry wants them to stay because it's what's saving certain bike shops. Right. And certain, I, I don't know, I- Well, okay...
• 38:55
I'm just, I'm just guessing, but- I'm, we're not gonna even start that conversation because every freaking year there's a new thing that's saving bike shops. Yeah. Well, exactly. Yeah. Yes, as well as skate.
• 39:04
How, how long, how long have gravel bikes been saving? How long did fat bikes save bike shops for? Oh, do you, do you really think- How long ago did the baby fats? Do you think gravel bikes saved bike shops?
• 39:10
I don't think so. No. I think- I think gravel bikes have been made since 1842 or whatever- Yeah... bikes were started... everybody does a gravel bike now. 'Cause they called them gravel bikes all of a sudden.
• 39:17
Well, they were called all road bikes back when I rode gravel bikes in the '70s. Back in my day. Back in the olden times. Ring the bell. Ring the bell because we're gonna get ugly here. All right, here we go. Oh, shit.
• 39:26
Oh, this is the final. [bell ringing] Yes. Bring, bring that guy into the mix. Oh, there might be one in there for Sam too. Yeah. Yeah, there's- Yep. There we go, guys. Sam's got a beer. Get happy, Sam.
• 39:34
So, so this beer that we're drinking now is called Tretyak's Revenge. It's, it's a sour Russian Imperial stout. Um- Jesus Christ...
• 39:43
it's made by a guy that played, um, junior hockey in Rochester, Minnesota and moved up and played, I think he played in Fairbanks in D1 and just never less, left Alaska. And he now owns, uh, a, uh- No, he plays for us...
• 39:57
a microbrew up there called, um, Odd Man Rush. And he makes awesome beer, and he sends it down to me. And he sent me a fucking awesome hockey jersey, so we- From- Nice... from where?
• 40:08
He, he lives south of, of, um, or was it north of, um... I think he's in Eagle River. South of Heaven. Oh, in, in Wiscenze. No, no, no, no. In Alaska. In, in, in Alaska. Oh, Eagle River, Alaska.
• 40:19
Yeah, so I think it's- There's an Eagle River in Wisconsin... it's north of Anchorage. Oh, okay. Oh, so he lived near Letterkenny? To be fair. Letterkenny's in- To be fair... Canada. Yeah. That's fair.
• 40:29
I know, so you're close. Oh my- I saw Canadia. Oh my God, it looks like coffee. Oh, I'd sip of that. Oh. It looks like coffee. Jesus Christ. Looks like cweffee. No, no, just call me, just call me Chewy.
• 40:37
That's good enough. [laughs] That was the one thing I forgot on my trip, was my passport. And your beer. I was, I was literally staring, I was in Sault Ste Marie, and I was literally staring at Canadia.
• 40:48
I'm like, "Literally." I'll come around again. I'm just gonna get- A... everybody kind of set up. Get the f- get the flavors. Oh my God, this smells awesome. Oh my God. That's one way to sit. Wait, what?
• 40:58
You're such, you're such a fucking e-bike rider. I know. [laughs] For life. What? Like a barley wine is what it is. I think that's what this is. No, it's a, it's a, it's a sour- Look at how it-... Imperial Russian-...
• 41:09
take, look at how long it takes to go down the side- Ooh... of the glass after you move it. It's got some, uh- What?... it's got some major- [laughs]... it, it's got some alcohol-hoosey in there.
• 41:16
I just- And so, like- I, o- once I get everybody filled up you can read the bottle 'cause I'm not- Oh, yeah, this totally reminds me of that Old Nick. Oh. Sure. Oh, look at- God almighty... look who likes this. Really.
• 41:27
You need to make this get cold. And the best part, and- You wanna serve this at room temperature, man... m- more than likely. That's enough. That's enough. Take, take- [laughs]... this is gonna damn near kill me.
• 41:36
You're gonna get on your e-bike and you're gonna- No... go too fast- Yeah... and there's gonna be a bus in front of you. I'm going the distance. Da, da, da, da, da, da. I'm going for speed.
• 41:42
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da. So here you go. If, if somebody wants to read this- Oh, yeah... da, da, da, da, da... you might wanna wipe that off. Odd Man Rush Brewing. Just go in with your s- Tretak's, Tretak?
• 41:52
Yeah, Tretak, yeah. Tretak's Revenge started out as the- Oh, no, Tretyak. Sorry, Tretyak...
• 41:56
Tretyak's Revenge started out as the Red Army Russian Imperial Stout, aged three months in Woodenville bourbon barrels and soured. [laughs] Vladislav, the guy, was the Soviet- Vladislav, yeah...
• 42:09
goaltender during the '70s and '80s. You're a goaltender. You're a goalie coach, aren't you? Yes. And, and my kids actually, he actually, Tretyak actually trained both of my boys. Oh, well there you go. Wow.
• 42:19
During the '70s and '80s- Yeah... when the Red Army was the most dominant hockey team in the world. However, we imagine he is still sour with the Miracle on Ice in 1980 loss to Americans. When he was- Goddamn 'Merica...
• 42:31
when he was pulled. Nine ABV, 98 IBUs. So he was pulled out of the game? Yes. I, that's vaguely familiar that a guy was. If you, if you- I did not know it was him...
• 42:42
if you, if you watch Miracle on Ice, he was the goalie that started the game and was, and he, and he's their guy, and was pulled, and then, and then, uh, they put in the backup.
• 42:50
I don't think he'd ever played hardly a game, and they still lost anyway, and it was, um, you never saw anything from the coach again. And Tretyak, Tretyak was coaching in, in the United States for quite a while.
• 43:02
So the coach of the Russian team in, in 1980 is, is, is he still in? He's probably in Siberia someplace now. Is he? No, no, no, no. He was done- Gulag... coaching after that. He's dead. Yeah. Um- He's in Vladivostok.
• 43:13
Gulag. And, and, and where, where we met Tretiak was- 17... you know, in, after that when he started coaching. Th- that dude is in such fantastic shape. He would go to Detroit, Lakes- Kind of like me...
• 43:23
Minnesota, little, little thing. And he would, he would run goalie camp- That's all e-bike actually [laughs]...
• 43:28
up there, it was a fantastic goalie camp, and he would do e- he was in his 40s and he could do everything that the kids were supposed to do and couldn't, and he could do...
• 43:36
So he could do like, you know, the Russian little, we would call them Russian kicks, but the little- The flies... while he's juggling tennis balls off the wall. I mean, this guy...
• 43:43
And then, and then we would see him, we would see him later in the evening, like swimming laps out on the lake. He was just incredible shape.
• 43:49
But could he put himself into a little doll that was into a littler doll that was into a littler doll? He could. Oh, yes. That was ama- that was probably the most amazing thing about him. Yeah. Most amazing thing.
• 43:59
Mature scout. Oh, I forgot to mention Sam's here, too. That's a nice ramp on your shirt. That is a great T-shirt. That is a cool shirt. That's a fantastic beer, too. Yeah. Yeah, that's- That is a good beer...
• 44:09
that's actually way more drinkable than I was expecting it to be for how hard it's gonna punch you in the face. Well, I suppose the sour part of it smooths out a bit the Russian Imperial.
• 44:20
It's not as sour as some sours I've had. It's not, no. No, no, but, but a Russian Imperial, a true Russian Imperial Stout is- It's brutal... harsh. Yeah. Yeah. It's harsh. Oh, yeah, yeah.
• 44:27
I don't know how else to describe it, it's, but it's harsh. Yeah. It does re- it does remind me of that Old Nick. But so- It, that was kind of a barley wine type thing...
• 44:34
so if you want to, um- And that was a crazy bastard... you know, so Surly Beer's, uh, Russian Imperial Stout is, um, Darkness, right? And they do a small run every year, and I think I have
• 44:49
like 15 bottles of it still in my basement. [laughs] So it's kept cold. Scarcity. It's kept cool. Yeah. No. And then everybody went- Yeah, no [laughs]... yeah, yeah. I, I'll come here.
• 44:57
I'm not bringing you fuckers to my house. [laughs] Well, wait, maybe- But in my, hey- Why don't, hey... why don't we just rendezvous in Decorah? We could. I know there's a house there. It's your other house. Yeah.
• 45:06
And, yeah. And I, and I might, and I might own a second place there, so we've got plenty of room for everybody now. What are you buying another place for?
• 45:13
Because we don't want to put an eightplex in, so Captain and I and the neighbors are thinking about buying it. Oh, nice. He moved down into town, too, huh? Yeah. So he... You haven't been there for a while, have you?
• 45:24
Uh, three years or better. He, he bought a place. He, he has his mom's house and he remodeled it, right?
• 45:31
And then, um, the long story is, is that Sue and I were going camping, and we were camping down in Decorah, and she loved camping down there, and she loved Decorah, and- Who doesn't? Yeah.
• 45:41
And so she says, "We should buy a house down here."
• 45:43
So we're, Captain and I and Sue are sitting at the campgrounds a couple years ago, and we're just like, she's like doing Zillow thing, and she's finding places, and it was really fun 'cause she's rode the bike trails and stuff and been downtown but never really been through Decorah.
• 45:55
So, um, we're, we're riding around. She goes, "I wanna look at this house, look at this house." There's one at the top, I think it's Frank Street, and she goes, "I wanna look at this one." I go, "Uh-uh.
• 46:04
We're not going up there." I'm like... She's like, "We are going to look at all these houses. We are going there." I'm like, "Okay."
• 46:10
So I'm riding my single speed handsome, and she's got geared bike, and the next thing I hear is, "Fuck that place" [laughs] [laughs] 'Cause she's walking her geared bike up the hill, and she's like, "Done.
• 46:19
Don't wanna see it. Don't care." The one- So-... the, there, there's houses there that I've wanted to buy.
• 46:24
When I first got married, which has been 20 plus years now, I tried to get my wife to move out there 'cause I was working on the wholesale side of the bike industry, and I'm like, "Well, that's pretty centrally located to Milwaukee, Chicago, Minneapolis, uh, Des Moines- Sure...
• 46:39
and, you know, it's just like it's in the middle of everything." I said, "This would be a great spot to be a, a rep out of."
• 46:44
And it, you know, they've got some of the best bike trails, mountain biking trails in the Midwest by far. Yeah. And she's like, "I'm pretty well set where I am for now."
• 46:57
But now we're gonna get, she's getting ready to retire. I'm like, "Wanna think about Decorah again?" Yeah. [laughs] I, a- and you know, and it's, um, it's, the, the problem with Decorah, that's what it's all becoming.
• 47:07
And, and they're- Old folks like you?... and they're, yeah, yeah. [laughs] And they're concerned about that, but we have a really good time down there. I mean, it's, I mean, what other town the size of what?
• 47:14
It's 8,000 with the college students maybe. And, um- Wow... you have two microbreweries.
• 47:20
And then the cool thing is, is, is that there's one called Dixie's now that was, uh, Top and Goliath's Tap House until they built the big place up on top of the hill. Huh.
• 47:29
And so that, his, his sister, sister-in-law owns it now, and she has- Whippy Dip still there? Whippy Dip is still there. Oh, yeah. And they still T-shirts. What... So it's good ice cream, but is it that good really?
• 47:40
I don't eat ice cream 'cause, you know, I'm old and- My dogs love it... shouldn't be eating all that sugary shit except for beer. Yeah. But, um, you know, I can't have beer and ice cream. But it's- I can...
• 47:49
but I can have beer. It's a cool, it's, it is a really cool one- [laughs]... to talk about. You know, and oddly- Pickle lane. [laughs]... maybe because of e-bikes- He doesn't like pickles...
• 47:58
I think I'm blaming this on e-bikes. Way to, way to bring it back. Yeah.
• 48:00
So I think e-bikes are the problem with that everybody's out riding the paved trails and gravel now instead of riding the mountain bike trails, so the trails are getting a little overgrown.
• 48:09
I mean, they're out there cutting weeds and stuff 'cause they're not- Connor's out there every day... Oh, Jesus Christ. Now you're blaming trail maintenance on electric bikes? Fuck yeah.
• 48:15
Well, their, their trail around town on the- Fucking A... their paved trails are really nice. Everything in the world can be blamed on electric bikes if you want to. Oh, in a long enough timeline. [laughs] You know?
• 48:22
I, have you, have you rode the Prairie, uh, Prairie Farmer Trail yet? Yeah. I tried to, but because I didn't have an e-bike, I couldn't get through. Honest to God.
• 48:28
That- See, that, there, there goes, and there's your problem right there. You have turned into a weak piece of shit because if you- No, I haven't turned into that. I've always been fragile [laughs] Oh, God. We're back.
• 48:36
Because, because the elevation on the Pra- Prairie Trail is like- Two feet? Um, I was gonna say a foot and a half maybe. [laughs] And there, and that's, and that's only because I think there's a sinkhole.
• 48:48
[laughs] [laughs] No, I, th- there's a lot of good rides out of there. The thing about getting out of Decorah is it's a two-mile climb to get out of Decorah. Not unless you ride with Captain.
• 48:58
Well- There- What, what does he do, pull you up with the truck? No. Br- Captain will take you on a 15-mile ride that never goes uphill It's called the path of least resistance. [laughs] Nice, nice, nice.
• 49:08
Didn't Dave take us on one of these paths one time? Oh, I just- Yeah... I, I like go, I like going to Bluffton. That's a great ride. Oh, yeah, Bluff- And, and once you get on top, it's all rolling, which is great- Yes...
• 49:17
'cause you can carry speed really well. And you have to sprint past the, you know, the farmhouse dogs and all sorts- G- yeah... of fun stuff. But it, and it, but it's, but it's, it's...
• 49:27
And it, and now it's gotten to the point where everybody, there's always a shuttle to get you back into town if you can't only make it out there. But it's only 12 and a half miles out there. Right.
• 49:34
So- But then you get hammered out there, and then it's a little harder to ride back...
• 49:37
that's the problem, because it's a dive- That's why I have an e-bike So my favorite thing ever coming back from Bluffton was going down into Decorah with Gunner, riding a tandem with whatever the blind guy's name is on the back, and he's going about 40 drifting around corners, and the guy on the back is just, just having the- [laughs]...
• 49:53
best time of his life. And Gunner is the master. Gunner is, Gunner's the guy who- Hey, you're a stoker. You can't see anything anyway, might as well- Yeah, but when he's-... go for it...
• 50:03
when he's drifting around gravel- Yeah... road corners at 40 or whatever, I mean, w- it was hard to keep up with him, put it that way.
• 50:10
Gunner, Gunner's like a, I don't know what you call it, h- he's, his body's like this and, and his lower part, the bike is dancing all over the place, but his u- upper torso doesn't move. Just never moves.
• 50:18
No, no, he's just like s- he's like this, and everything else is, like, sketchy as shit, and then he's just like- And he's always ridden sketchy-as-shit bikes with goofy parts on them- Oh...
• 50:26
like Girvin freaking stems and weird stuff. Oh, anything that anybody will give him.
• 50:30
He, we finally had to change his rear derailleur one time, the, the pulleys on it, because I po- they were so sharp 'cause it had wore down so much, I poked, I b- drew blood- Bro, on your skin [laughs] Like a, like a freaking throwing star...
• 50:43
yeah, I th- I drew blood on my finger just w- w- whizzing around Ah, it's time to change those out. Yeah, no, he's like 10 years beyond before changing them out, which is crazy. Right on, right on.
• 50:53
Well, any final thoughts on e-bikes? Because, uh, owing- Ooh, I'm out of popcorn... owing to the fact that- [laughs] Yeah, we just ran out of popcorn. We have to go buy more- [laughs]... pickled popcorn. Yeah.
• 51:02
And Zita wants to go swimming. Yeah, Zita wants to go swimming, 'cause it's still- I don't wanna see naked Zita... it's still 84 degrees or whatever. That's where we're going swimming.
• 51:10
It's not that hot right now, but it's, it's hot in the p- you know, eh, whatever. Well- It's humid. Humid... if I, if I do, I ca- I suppose if I didn't change anybody's mind, I'll have to fucking come back again. Yeah.
• 51:19
[laughs] Well, I'm gonna tell you right now, you haven't changed my mind at all, so... Oh. Oh. Oh. That sounds like a challenge. The challenge is on. I can see the challenge right now.
• 51:28
All right, bring it on, motherfucker. Yeah. If you're gonna dr- if you're gonna drive four hours, we're gonna do, we're gonna do- An eight minute show... close to an hour show, you know?
• 51:32
I mean, we're not gonna mess around- Maybe, you know what we should do?... with the 30 minutes or anything. All right, wait, maybe we should do something new. No.
• 51:38
Depending on how far the guest travels determines how long the podcast is. So if we don't have- So next time he comes back, we do a four hour and eight minute motherfucking podcast.
• 51:47
No, I'm gl- How about if we don't have any guests, then we don't do any shows, though? No, that doesn't work. I, I, I like it. That's the default. [laughs] I li- I, I like this idea better.
• 51:54
I think I come down and we go for a fucking ride, and then we'll have a podcast afterwards to determine how fucking weak you really are. I'm back. That sounds like a plan. And I'll let you lead the ride. No.
• 52:03
I'll ride, I'll ride the Tripper. The Daaaay Tripper. See? Okay, I'll do that. I'll ride the Tripper, and you find, and you find the path. You ride the city. Yeah.
• 52:11
The, the, the, the, the, the new- Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da... the, the Raleigh Tripper. Yeah. Yeah.
• 52:17
And I'll bring this mini with 29ers- We should measure that so we can sell that thing, you know, to somebody that can actually... 'Cause it's got a CC post. Oh, fuck, I'll give it to somebody. [laughs] A Raleigh Tripper.
• 52:26
We'll, we'll, we'll do that... Reynolds 525. It's a nice bike. That's a nice bike. It is a nice bike. But, uh- We'll raffle it off to the first person that can convince me that e-bikes are worth of shit.
• 52:34
[laughs] [laughs] That's gonna take some doing, folks. Yeah. [laughs] Good luck to y'all. So thanks for wasting another good portion of your time with us, and, uh- It's gotta be good hypnosis...
• 52:44
thanks for- Thanks for coming, man... I hope it was worth it- [laughs]... because it, I entertained the shit out of me. I was pretty stoked. And that's not easy. Uh, uh, yeah, it is. I'm, I'm pretty jaded that way.
• 52:54
Yeah, right. So. Well, thanks for having me, you guys. Absolutely. Thanks for coming. Thanks for coming. It was a totally good time. Gosh, you're ugly.
• 52:58
Especially for something that got put together about a day and a half ago, so. Yeah. Yeah, Monday, right? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That worked out great. Yeah. Well, five days ago, 'cause it's Friday. Oh, yeah.
• 53:08
Oh, yeah, we had a- Earlier this week- Where's, where's occasional Mike with the freaking time warp thing? Ah. Ah. I don't know. I wanna see the, I wanna see the- I'm in a, I'm in a popcorn coma...
• 53:17
I wanna see the band play the closing. Otherwise, I'm fucking pissed. Popcorn coma.
• 53:22
  [upbeat music]
