- 0:01In Paradise Lost, John Milton describes at great length the
- 0:06intentions and motivations of the fallen angels as described
- 0:10by the Christian tradition and their attempt and need to
- 0:14influence and control the human world, and thereby to defeat
- 0:19God's intention and plan for humanity.
- 0:23This story is in fact, not unique to the Christian
- 0:26tradition. Each culture, each tradition,
- 0:30addresses the fight between those forces that have a vested
- 0:34interest in maintaining and perpetuating darkness,
- 0:38ignorance, and death, and opposing the advent and growth
- 0:42of light, knowledge, and life. These universal tales arise from
- 0:48actual experiences that occurred to individuals who clothe these
- 0:53experiences in the symbols and images of their own background.
- 1:00An example occurred in the mid 1970s, as privately reported and
- 1:04memorialized in writing contemporaneously with the
- 1:07event. An individual, a spiritual
- 1:11seeker dedicated to practice of yoga and focused on the growth
- 1:15of consciousness in the light, awoke from a vivid real dream
- 1:22experience in a cold sweat and in a state of utter exhaustion.
- 1:28He recounted how he had been confronted in what was more than
- 1:32a dream but a real experience by a being who took the shape and
- 1:36form and image of Adolf Hitler. The being apparently was not
- 1:42destroyed by Hitler's demise, but simply abandoned Hitler and
- 1:46migrated into new forms and took up its project in new places,
- 1:51primarily in the United States, the victor in the Second World
- 1:56War. They had a dispute and a long
- 2:00battle ensued. Eventually the battle was won
- 2:05and the formation was defeated. That experience was so vivid
- 2:10that it stayed with the seeker for decades afterwards, and he
- 2:14recognized that it was a transcription of an ongoing
- 2:17battle that would take place in his lifetime, and of which he
- 2:21would necessarily be a participant to confront the
- 2:25force of darkness that was appearing in that form.
- 2:29He in fact sees corresponding elements in the Hitler force
- 2:34working still in today's world, and feels like this battle is
- 2:38still ongoing. Forces seeking domination, which
- 2:42use intimidation, bullying, tactics, falsehood and
- 2:47propaganda to gain ascendancy, are active in many parts of the
- 2:51world, seeking to undermine and control the world's resources
- 2:57regardless of the impact on huge numbers of people and the
- 3:01environment itself, and revelling in the creation of
- 3:05suffering, fear and pain, Shriorobindo notes quote.
- 3:11The theory of this traditional knowledge is perfectly rational
- 3:14and verifiable by inner experience, and it imposes
- 3:18itself if we admit the supra physical and do not cabin
- 3:23ourselves in the acceptation of material being as the only
- 3:26reality. As there is a Cosmic Self and
- 3:30spirit pervading and upholding the universe and its beings, so
- 3:34too there is a cosmic force that moves all things, and on this
- 3:40original Cosmic force depend enact many cosmic forces that
- 3:44are its powers or arise as forms of its universal action.
- 3:50Whatever is formulated in the universe, has a force or forces
- 3:55that support it, seek to fulfill or further it, find their
- 4:00foundation in its functioning, their account of success in its
- 4:04success and growth and domination, their self
- 4:08fulfillment, or their prolongation of being in its
- 4:11victory or survival. As there are powers of knowledge
- 4:16or forces of the light, so there are powers of ignorance and
- 4:21tenebrous forces of the darkness whose work is to prolong the
- 4:25reign of ignorance. And in conscience.
- 4:29As there are forces of truth, so there are forces that live by
- 4:33the falsehood and support it and work for its victory.
- 4:38As there are powers whose life is intimately bound up with the
- 4:41existence, the idea, and the impulse of good, so there are
- 4:47forces whose life is bound up with the existence and the idea
- 4:52and the impulse of evil. It is this truth of the cosmic
- 4:56invisible that was symbolized by the ancient belief of a struggle
- 5:01between the powers of light and darkness, good and evil, for the
- 5:05possession of the world and the government of the life of man.
- 5:09This was the significance of the contest between the Vedic gods
- 5:14and their opponents. Sons of darkness and division
- 5:17figured in a later tradition as Titan and Jayan and demon Asura
- 5:23Rakshasa Pisacha. The same tradition is found in
- 5:27the Zoroastrian double principle and the later Semitic opposition
- 5:32of God and his angels on the one side and Satan and his hosts on
- 5:36the other. Invisible personalities and
- 5:40powers that draw man to the divine light and truth and good,
- 5:44or lure him into subjection to the undivined principle of
- 5:49darkness and falsehood and evil. Modern thought is aware of no
- 5:54invisible forces other than those revealed or constructed by
- 5:58science. It does not believe that nature
- 6:01is capable of creating any other beings than those around us in
- 6:05the physical world, men, beasts, birds, reptiles, fishes,
- 6:09insects, germs, and animalculi. But if there are invisible
- 6:16cosmic forces physical in their nature, that act upon the body
- 6:21of inanimate objects, there is no valid reason why there should
- 6:26not be invisible cosmic forces, mental and vital in their
- 6:29nature, that act upon his mind and his life force.
- 6:34And if mind and life impersonal forces form conscious beings, or
- 6:40use persons to embody them in physical forms and in a physical
- 6:45world, and can act upon matter and through matter, it is not
- 6:51impossible that on their own planes they should form
- 6:55conscious beings whose subtler substance is invisible to us, or
- 7:00that they should be able to act from those planes on beings in
- 7:05physical nature, whatever reality or mythical unreality we
- 7:09may attach to the traditional figures of past human belief or
- 7:14experience, they would then be representations of things that
- 7:18are true in principle. In that case the first source of
- 7:23good and evil would be not in terrestrial life or in the
- 7:27evolution from the inconscience, but in life itself.
- 7:32Their source would be supra physical, and they would be
- 7:36reflected here from a large supra physical nature.
