- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to KFI AM 640, the Bill Handel Show
- 0:04Speaker 1: on demand on the iHeartRadio app.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Some really important stuff is going on. A big issue
- 0:12Speaker 2: is First Amendment and the president's ability to toss out
- 0:16Speaker 2: news reporters from covering the White House. And here is
- 0:19Speaker 2: what the president did. Earlier this week, the— President said
- 0:25Speaker 2: that the three news outlets, CNN, MS Now and Politico,
- 0:30Speaker 2: could no longer cover the White House, literally couldn't even
- 0:34Speaker 2: go on the White House grounds, which you notice that
- 0:39Speaker 2: all the other news outlets do when they do reporting.
- 0:42Speaker 2: And he said outright in Truth Social, and he also
- 0:46Speaker 2: said in person, I'm throwing them out because it's fake
- 0:50Speaker 2: news that they produce. And they report bad things about me,
- 0:56Speaker 2: which is not true. And therefore, they're gone. Effectively, I
- 1:02Speaker 2: don't like what they're reporting about me. Therefore, I'm going
- 1:06Speaker 2: to make sure, and I am, I'm ordering that they
- 1:08Speaker 2: not be allowed to on the White House, at the
- 1:11Speaker 2: White House, in the White House, even on the grounds. Well,
- 1:14Speaker 2: as you would imagine, they immediately filed a lawsuit saying, oh, no,
- 1:19Speaker 2: we need to be able to broadcast. This is a
- 1:23Speaker 2: First Amendment issue, which means you can't stop news outlets
- 1:27Speaker 2: from broadcasting. That just doesn't work that way, not in America.
- 1:32Speaker 2: And the president doesn't have the right to curtail, in
- 1:36Speaker 2: this case, MSNBC, CNN broadcast. or Political MS Now and CNN.
- 1:44Speaker 2: And so a couple of issues. The court came down
- 1:46Speaker 2: and there's a really, really scary outcome that just happened.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Just the news broke a few minutes ago. So let
- 1:53Speaker 2: me go through, first of all, what happened because this
- 1:55Speaker 2: is a little bit wonky. And the decision here that
- 1:59Speaker 2: the judge made by telling the White House, you've got
- 2:02Speaker 2: to let these people in right now. It's a 14-day
- 2:07Speaker 2: reprieve because this is a judgment from a federal district
- 2:12Speaker 2: court judge in Washington. and it does not really establish
- 2:16Speaker 2: the rights. That's going to go up to the appeals
- 2:19Speaker 2: court and maybe the Supreme Court if the Supreme Court
- 2:22Speaker 2: wants to hear it. Okay, so the argument was, and
- 2:26Speaker 2: here's the big argument which the judge actually ruled on,
- 2:30Speaker 2: is that due process was not given to the various
- 2:35Speaker 2: news outlets. What does due process mean in this case? Well,
- 2:39Speaker 2: the government barred the news outlets from reporting or being
- 2:43Speaker 2: on the White House, and did not give them the
- 2:47Speaker 2: ability to contest it. Did not give them the ability
- 2:51Speaker 2: to say, no, you're wrong, your rationale is wrong. And
- 2:56Speaker 2: because the procedure and the policy, and I think the law,
- 3:03Speaker 2: says if under these circumstances there is a revocation of
- 3:07Speaker 2: credentials to defend, report on the White House. And it
- 3:11Speaker 2: doesn't get more important than reporting what the president does.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I mean, you tell me that's not of national interest.
- 3:17Speaker 2: You tell me that's not important to the people. And
- 3:20Speaker 2: you tell me that they don't have the news outlets
- 3:24Speaker 2: don't have the right to do this. Of course they do.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I mean, this is a fundamental, fundamental question. OK, so
- 3:30Speaker 2: what the judge ruled is this temporary stay. that the
- 3:34Speaker 2: White House has to reinstate these news organizations straight out
- 3:43Speaker 2: is based on this due process argument. Not the First
- 3:47Speaker 2: Amendment argument, not the other arguments that were established. Now,
- 3:53Speaker 2: the judge was asking questions of both the attorneys, one
- 3:58Speaker 2: on the government side, as well as the attorneys representing
- 4:04Speaker 2: the media outlets. And the government side said, and this
- 4:10Speaker 2: is just this, I just don't get it. I just
- 4:13Speaker 2: don't understand. Well, I do understand where the Trump administration
- 4:17Speaker 2: is going, and that is it was for national security reasons.
- 4:21Speaker 2: That's why the president banned these outlets. And when the
- 4:25Speaker 2: judge asked, what national security are we talking about? because
- 4:30Speaker 2: this had to do with what's going on with the arch,
- 4:34Speaker 2: reporting on that crazy ass arch between the Lincoln Memorial
- 4:37Speaker 2: and Arlington Cemetery. The White House said that it is
- 4:44Speaker 2: national security. But here was the problem that the president had.
- 4:49Speaker 2: And unfortunately, he screwed himself on this. When he first
- 4:52Speaker 2: banned those reporters, he did not mention national security at all.
- 4:56Speaker 2: He said outright, the reason I'm doing this because they're
- 4:59Speaker 2: reporting negatively on me, period.
- 5:02Speaker 3: That's it. You report negatively on me.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I have the right to toss you out because what
- 5:08Speaker 2: you report is fake news. And what he is arguing,
- 5:12Speaker 2: he will determine what's fake and what's true. And the
- 5:17Speaker 2: Justice Department, I don't know how a Justice Department lawyer
- 5:20Speaker 2: can look at anybody in the face and say this.
- 5:23Speaker 2: The president has the absolute right to determine what.
- 5:27Speaker 3: National security is. That's it. Nobody else.
- 5:31Speaker 2: The president decides what national security is. And if national security,
- 5:37Speaker 2: for example, that ARCH, which was to be the biggest,
- 5:40Speaker 2: the greatest arch in the world. Now it's a national
- 5:43Speaker 2: security issue because he's putting drones on top and it's
- 5:46Speaker 2: going to be an ammunition dump.
- 5:47Speaker 3: I'm not exaggerating, by the way.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And it's going to be snipers on top and it's
- 5:52Speaker 2: all national security. And the judge went, what are you
- 5:55Speaker 2: talking about? Nope. If the president says it's national security,
- 5:59Speaker 2: it's national security.
- 6:01Speaker 4: And you can't... Didn't Obama try to exclude Fox News
- 6:07Speaker 4: at one point from the press pool?
- 6:10Speaker 3: I don't think so. We can look that up.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I do not believe that he tried to exclude Fox News.
- 6:15Speaker 2: There's something vaguely that I remember that he had some
- 6:18Speaker 2: issue with Fox. I don't think he banned Fox from
- 6:22Speaker 2: showing up. I mean, he bitched and complained. Presidents do that.
- 6:26Speaker 2: And they hate it when reporters report on things negatively. But, hey,
- 6:30Speaker 2: that's the cost of doing business when you're president. You're
- 6:32Speaker 2: going to have you're going to have negative reporting. And
- 6:35Speaker 2: so the judge reinstates the news outlets. And one of
- 6:41Speaker 2: the things that they were banned from eating part of
- 6:45Speaker 2: the pool that reports the way it works in the
- 6:48Speaker 2: White House at the Oval Office. They can't put all
- 6:51Speaker 2: the cameras in, of course, so they can't have all
- 6:53Speaker 2: the networks. So what they do is one network and
- 6:56Speaker 2: they rotate is the camera is theirs and that's shared
- 6:59Speaker 2: with the other networks. And he said these three or
- 7:03Speaker 2: especially CNN cannot be part of it. And the lawsuit
- 7:06Speaker 2: hit and all the other networks. stood up with CNN.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Even Fox. Even Fox.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Well, they should.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Of course they should. But you'd think that the Fox
- 7:20Speaker 2: would go the other way.
- 7:20Speaker 3: They didn't. So we'll see what happens. Now, here's the
- 7:24Speaker 3: scary one. Here is the scary one.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Is that the judge ordered the reinstatement of CNN and
- 7:31Speaker 2: Politico and MSNOW, and the White House still denies it.
- 7:38Speaker 2: in complete contravention to a legal order. That is scary.
- 7:42Speaker 2: That's the White House saying, we don't care what the
- 7:44Speaker 2: judges say. We're going to do what we're going to do.
- 7:47Speaker 2: That is a real constitutional problem.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Is it true that Trump wants the press pool to
- 7:53Speaker 4: be painted American flag blue?
- 7:56Speaker 3: Probably.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Anyway, we're going to follow that up. That's really scary
- 8:01Speaker 2: stuff as far as I'm concerned. OK, coming up, President
- 8:06Speaker 2: Xi Jinping at the airport and a very rare appearance
- 8:11Speaker 2: where the president meets a head of state at the airport.
- 8:15Speaker 2: We'll talk about that coming up.
- 8:17Speaker 5: You're listening to Bill Handel on demand from KFI AM 640.
- 8:23Speaker 2: In the story about the president banning CNN from reporting
- 8:28Speaker 2: at the White House, I've been told was true. I
- 8:32Speaker 2: remember now that Fox had been banned. There was an
- 8:37Speaker 2: interview being done with an official and it was a
- 8:40Speaker 2: pool interview with the official and the president basically threw
- 8:45Speaker 2: out Fox. But it was that one interview and that
- 8:49Speaker 2: was it. President Obama.
- 8:51Speaker 4: I didn't know that you– I don't know if you clarified.
- 8:53Speaker 3: That at what? You keep saying the president. Yeah, I
- 8:57Speaker 3: meant Obama. Yeah, it was President Obama who did that.
- 9:00Speaker 2: And the difference is that Fox was not banned from reporting,
- 9:04Speaker 2: was not thrown out of the White House. It was
- 9:07Speaker 2: a singular interview. And by the way, Obama doing that
- 9:10Speaker 2: is horrific. Also, I think a violation of First Amendment.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I have no problem with that. And Fox, of course,
- 9:16Speaker 2: went crazy as the rest of the press went nuts
- 9:20Speaker 2: and backed up Fox. So there's the big difference that
- 9:24Speaker 2: I wanted to share. Now, the president yesterday met at
- 9:29Speaker 2: the airport. He welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is
- 9:35Speaker 2: making a trip to Washington, is here for three days
- 9:38Speaker 2: meeting with the president, not at the U.N., only meeting
- 9:42Speaker 2: with the president there. And he, President Trump, went to
- 9:47Speaker 2: the airport. Very rarely does that happen. Met him at
- 9:50Speaker 2: the foot of the ladder, the stairs. And as Trump
- 9:56Speaker 2: has a want to do, there was a lot of panoply.
- 9:59Speaker 2: There was just a tremendous amount of stuff going on.
- 10:05Speaker 2: So it was, as you would think, there's a huge
- 10:08Speaker 2: military presence, which everybody does as the president's walked down
- 10:11Speaker 2: and they're seeing those soldiers standing at attention on both sides.
- 10:16Speaker 2: And there was a flyover with B-1 bombers there. The
- 10:21Speaker 2: band was playing both the national anthem and the Chinese anthem.
- 10:26Speaker 2: And so now they're sitting down and talking. Last time
- 10:31Speaker 2: they met was 10 years ago when President Trump went
- 10:36Speaker 2: to China. And so they're going to be talking about Taiwan.
- 10:41Speaker 2: They're going to be talking about AI. They're going to
- 10:44Speaker 2: be talking about the war, the war in Iran. Amy,
- 10:48Speaker 2: you're looking at me like you want to say something.
- 10:49Speaker 6: Oh, just a quick clarification. He was the last time
- 10:54Speaker 6: she was here was 10 years ago, but Trump was
- 10:56Speaker 6: just in Beijing in May.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Ah, OK. Thank you.
- 10:59Speaker 6: All right.
- 11:00Speaker 2: So it's a very big deal. Also, did you notice
- 11:05Speaker 2: that the Chinese president flew on an Air China plane?
- 11:13Speaker 2: It wasn't a presidential plane. It just said Air China
- 11:16Speaker 2: and looked like a regular commercial plane that he flew on. Now,
- 11:20Speaker 2: I'm assuming that it was just for the presidential party.
- 11:23Speaker 2: But I thought that was interesting because usually when you're
- 11:26Speaker 2: looking at foreign leaders flying around, they fly on their
- 11:29Speaker 2: dedicated airplanes like Air Force One, which has the seal
- 11:33Speaker 2: of the president. And this was I'd like to know
- 11:37Speaker 2: if that was just a standard plane. Anyway, so the U.S.
- 11:41Speaker 2: military rushed out to roll down the red carpet. Senior
- 11:45Speaker 2: officials were watching this from the airplane door. And up
- 11:49Speaker 2: comes the limousine. And that is a U.S. limousine pulls up.
- 11:55Speaker 2: And the first lady and the president go up to
- 11:58Speaker 2: the carpet at the base of the stairs. And then
- 12:01Speaker 2: they welcome President Xi. And it's going to be a
- 12:04Speaker 2: state dinner also that's going to be given for the president.
- 12:11Speaker 2: And Trump also had, of course, he brought up the big,
- 12:15Speaker 2: beautiful ballroom because it's so great. And so they are
- 12:20Speaker 2: going to talk about manufacturing, going back to the U.S.,
- 12:25Speaker 2: Chinese cooperation with the U.S., Right now, U.S. and China
- 12:31Speaker 2: are fairly sympathetic and they're going to be talking about
- 12:35Speaker 2: the tariffs also.
- 12:36Speaker 3: All right.
- 12:37Speaker 2: So that's what's going on with President Xi. And we'll
- 12:41Speaker 2: get some.
- 12:41Speaker 3: News on that. So coming up, let's get local.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Why is the best price on your next car getting
- 12:48Speaker 2: harder to find? Huh. Let me think about that. Because
- 12:54Speaker 2: the argument is what's being done is good for us.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Yet at the same time, it's harder and harder to
- 13:01Speaker 2: find the best price. Seems like a contradiction, doesn't it? Well,
- 13:04Speaker 2: I'll share that story with you when we return.
- 13:09Speaker 5: You're listening to Bill Handel On Demand from KFI AM 640.
- 13:15Speaker 3: News is breaking right now, big time.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Yesterday, the federal judge in the case where the White
- 13:22Speaker 2: House president basically banned or did ban CNN, Politico, MSNOW
- 13:28Speaker 2: from reporting from the White House. So they went to
- 13:30Speaker 2: court and the judge said, oh, no, they have to
- 13:33Speaker 2: be reinstated at least for 14 days pending a hearing.
- 13:36Speaker 2: And then I went through it and the White House said,
- 13:40Speaker 2: too bad.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Don't care.
- 13:42Speaker 2: They're still banned. And so the judge said, you have
- 13:46Speaker 2: until 1230 today. to the Department of Justice to come
- 13:51Speaker 2: in and explain to me why you are not paying
- 13:53Speaker 2: attention to my order. And that's happening in a couple
- 13:56Speaker 2: of hours at 9.30 our time.
- 13:59Speaker 3: So we'll see what happens. This is going to be
- 14:01Speaker 3: really interesting.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Does the White House just say to the courts, you
- 14:05Speaker 2: can pound sand, I'm going to do anything, we'll do
- 14:07Speaker 2: anything we want. Really interesting stuff going on. Now, also
- 14:12Speaker 2: something I want to share with you, and that is
- 14:15Speaker 2: trying to get the best price for your car. Stellantis,
- 14:19Speaker 2: that makes Jeep, is adopting a minimum advertised pricing rule
- 14:24Speaker 2: next month.
- 14:26Speaker 3: And what does that mean?
- 14:27Speaker 2: Well, it's setting a floor for the lowest price the
- 14:29Speaker 2: dealers can advertise. So they cannot go, starting with the
- 14:33Speaker 2: 2027 model year, advertisement for Stellantis by dealers cannot go
- 14:39Speaker 2: below the invoice price paid by the dealer. In other words,
- 14:44Speaker 2: you can go ahead and advertise right down to the
- 14:47Speaker 2: price that you pay to the dealers. And so automakers
- 14:51Speaker 2: are simply preventing their dealers from publicly competing on price.
- 14:55Speaker 3: And how does that help the consumer?
- 14:59Speaker 2: Well, here's what Stellantis and GM and Toyota that are
- 15:04Speaker 2: now doing this say, that if there is no limit
- 15:09Speaker 2: to what dealers can advertise their price for, What they
- 15:13Speaker 2: do is they advertise their price at below what they
- 15:17Speaker 2: pay with basically no intention of either selling the car
- 15:22Speaker 2: at that price or it's a bait and switch. And
- 15:27Speaker 2: I had that experience happen to me when my daughter,
- 15:31Speaker 2: I was buying my daughter a car and was looking
- 15:35Speaker 2: at advertisements.
- 15:37Speaker 3: And there was one from a Toyota dealer.
- 15:40Speaker 2: It was a Toyota. That's what my daughter ended up getting.
- 15:43Speaker 2: And there were three cars that were discounted so deeply
- 15:48Speaker 2: it almost made no sense. And so I called the dealership.
- 15:53Speaker 2: And then they have to give you the license number.
- 15:54Speaker 2: The law says you have to have the license number,
- 15:57Speaker 2: which car specifically. So if they're advertising that, they have
- 16:01Speaker 2: to sell it. Now, so what this does when the
- 16:05Speaker 2: price is advertised so low is that it becomes a
- 16:09Speaker 2: bait and switch. that the real intention is not to
- 16:12Speaker 2: sell the car at that price.
- 16:14Speaker 3: So I called.
- 16:16Speaker 2: I called the dealership, and I got some sleazeball salesperson,
- 16:19Speaker 2: and this was in Long Beach, and I was prepared
- 16:21Speaker 2: to drive down there and pick up the car.
- 16:24Speaker 3: And I said, so you still have a car available? Yeah,
- 16:27Speaker 3: we only have one more. We've sold two.
- 16:30Speaker 2: And I said, okay, so I can buy that car
- 16:32Speaker 2: that price? Yes, absolutely. And I said, tell you what
- 16:36Speaker 2: I'm going to do. I'm driving from Los Angeles to
- 16:40Speaker 2: Long Beach. That's an hour and a half drive. And
- 16:44Speaker 2: I want that car and it better become available. And
- 16:48Speaker 2: the guy said, oh, it's here. And I said, please
- 16:51Speaker 2: tell your boss that if that car is not available
- 16:55Speaker 2: and in fact has not been sold yet, and you
- 16:59Speaker 2: try to say there are no more, this car doesn't
- 17:01Speaker 2: exist for sale anymore, I'm going to file a lawsuit.
- 17:05Speaker 2: So he goes back and he comes to me, goes,
- 17:08Speaker 2: we just sold the car. Literally, we sold the car
- 17:11Speaker 2: 10 minutes ago. So that car is not available anymore.
- 17:14Speaker 2: But we'd love to see you down here because we
- 17:15Speaker 2: can get you in a car on a great price. Classic,
- 17:18Speaker 2: it's classic bait and switch. And Stellantis, another dealer, is saying,
- 17:23Speaker 2: you can't do that anymore.
- 17:25Speaker 3: You're done.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Now, what happens in reality is that you can't get
- 17:31Speaker 2: the car below the price the manufacturer pays.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Okay, fair enough. And if they sell it, they sell it.
- 17:40Speaker 3: And if they don't, they don't.
- 17:43Speaker 2: But those were never for sale. That's the other thing
- 17:45Speaker 2: that happens. Do you know when that car was advertised
- 17:48Speaker 2: below the manufacturer's price, below the dealer's price, it was
- 17:53Speaker 2: never available. Someone else had always bought it. And this
- 17:57Speaker 2: is what Stellantis and the other car dealers are saying.
- 18:00Speaker 2: And you're not going to do that anymore. You're not
- 18:02Speaker 2: going to be able to advertise cars that cheap.
- 18:04Speaker 3: And so that's what's going on with that.
- 18:08Speaker 2: And Scott Painter, the founder and chief executive of a
- 18:12Speaker 2: car buying platform says- No question it makes price discovery
- 18:16Speaker 2: for consumers harder.
- 18:17Speaker 3: I don't know if it does. I really don't.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Because I think they can advertise all the way down
- 18:22Speaker 2: to what they're buying.
- 18:25Speaker 3: From the manufacturer.
- 18:27Speaker 2: At the same time, why can't they sell below the
- 18:29Speaker 2: manufacturer's price? Why can't they decide that they're going to
- 18:33Speaker 2: put these cars up for sale and they become loss leaders?
- 18:37Speaker 2: Costco sells a hot dog and a drink for $ 1.
- 18:40Speaker 3: 50.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Way below what they pay for that product but there's
- 18:46Speaker 2: no bait and switch they're not saying oh you know
- 18:48Speaker 2: what instead of this it really isn't available at a
- 18:51Speaker 2: dollar fifty uh because those have all been sold uh
- 18:56Speaker 2: now the same thing is three dollars and fifty cents could.
- 18:59Speaker 4: You imagine you would probably go more nuts over that
- 19:02Speaker 4: than you would the car.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Oh god oh yes oh absolutely on top of that
- 19:06Speaker 2: and here's another story that's even more important when it
- 19:10Speaker 2: comes to car buying is that churros are coming back
- 19:13Speaker 2: to Costco for a dollar.
- 19:16Speaker 3: They're bringing back churros. Thank God.
- 19:18Speaker 7: Oh, it's official now that it is the churros and
- 19:21Speaker 7: not the pizza?
- 19:22Speaker 2: No, no, the pizza is always going to be there.
- 19:24Speaker 2: I think, Neil, you've been following up on this. I
- 19:27Speaker 2: don't know.
- 19:28Speaker 3: That they've announced it. The assumption is.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, you're right. I think it's just theory out there.
- 19:33Speaker 4: But when it happens, we're going to take the whole
- 19:36Speaker 4: show over there.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Damn right.
- 19:39Speaker 2: They replaced the churro with a chocolate chip cookie that you.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Can get anyplace. The humanity. That's exactly it.
- 19:47Speaker 2: So screw buying a car and paying thousands of dollars
- 19:51Speaker 2: more than you should. It's the churro story that I
- 19:55Speaker 2: think is really important. Churros for a dollar. It is
- 19:58Speaker 2: confirmed that they're bringing back the churro.
- 20:01Speaker 5: Oh.
- 20:01Speaker 7: Oh, good news.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Good news.
- 20:03Speaker 7: We needed that today.
- 20:05Speaker 2: All right.
- 20:06Speaker 3: For a limited time.
- 20:07Speaker 5: Yeah. Wait, wait, wait.
- 20:09Speaker 3: What?
- 20:09Speaker 7: For a limited time. It's going to be like the
- 20:11Speaker 7: next McRib again.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Oh, come on. They don't have anything for a limited
- 20:14Speaker 3: time at Costco.
- 20:17Speaker 2: It's not like a uh you know promotion is they
- 20:20Speaker 2: put it on the menu and then it stays on
- 20:22Speaker 2: the menu they've added a couple things the turkey and provolone.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Sandwiches which is excellent uh by the.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Way very very good can you bring the churro back
- 20:29Speaker 4: for a refund uh if you just have that just
- 20:32Speaker 4: have a little bit of sugar in your hand a
- 20:34Speaker 4: little bit.
- 20:35Speaker 2: I'll bet you you could that's true you know we
- 20:37Speaker 2: have a huge story coming up um It's that the
- 20:40Speaker 2: president is about to declare war.
- 20:43Speaker 3: And drop the atomic weapon.
- 20:45Speaker 2: But instead, we're going to put that aside and spend
- 20:48Speaker 2: the next segment talking about a churro at Costco. No,
- 20:52Speaker 2: we're not going to do that. I wish we could.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Coming up, Los Angeles approves almost half a billion dollars,
- 21:00Speaker 2: actually $ 446 million in affordable housing spending. And that— That
- 21:07Speaker 2: the amount of money that's being sent is astronomical. And
- 21:09Speaker 2: that's the largest pool ever. I'll talk about that when
- 21:11Speaker 2: we return.
- 21:13Speaker 5: You're listening to Bill Handel on demand from KFI AM 640.
- 21:21Speaker 2: A quick word about Neil and Amy. They are going
- 21:25Speaker 2: over the edge tomorrow. And that's Universal City. And you
- 21:30Speaker 2: can see them repelling things. down a 26-story building, and
- 21:35Speaker 2: it all has to do with a union rescue mission.
- 21:40Speaker 2: And so, Amy, we'll go to you. How do people
- 21:43Speaker 2: get involved and what this is all about?
- 21:45Speaker 7: Super easy.
- 21:46Speaker 6: Just go to urm.org slash O-T-E, and then right on
- 21:51Speaker 6: the homepage is a little Team KFI button, and just
- 21:54Speaker 6: click on that.
- 21:56Speaker 7: That's where you can donate. We'll take $ 5, $ 50, $ 500, and.
- 22:01Speaker 6: If you want to go over the edge, you just
- 22:04Speaker 6: have to raise $ 1, 000. If you want to do that,
- 22:06Speaker 6: let us know. We'll go over the edge with you.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:09Speaker 2: And where else do you have the opportunity to rappel
- 22:12Speaker 2: down a 26-story building? For those of you that would
- 22:16Speaker 2: like that opportunity, if you're crazy enough. Doesn't happen.
- 22:20Speaker 7: Can't do it.
- 22:21Speaker 3: That's right.
- 22:21Speaker 2: It's not one of those things that can be done.
- 22:23Speaker 3: It really isn't.
- 22:24Speaker 7: There might be a reason for that, but we're doing
- 22:26Speaker 7: it anyway.
- 22:27Speaker 3: That's true.
- 22:27Speaker 2: It's almost like what we do at Pastathon. We sell off,
- 22:31Speaker 2: we auction off a private barbecue in my house.
- 22:35Speaker 3: And Neil and I do a... We do a broadcast
- 22:38Speaker 3: from there. Can't do it otherwise. Can't do it.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Maybe reword that. I don't want people to think we're
- 22:43Speaker 4: barbecuing our privates.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Yes, we are.
- 22:46Speaker 5: Oh, right.
- 22:47Speaker 3: A quick word about what's happening.
- 22:48Speaker 2: L.A. City Council approved unanimously four hundred and sixty six
- 22:54Speaker 2: million dollars for affordable housing. And this is on top
- 22:58Speaker 2: of last year, $ 387 million. So now we're talking about
- 23:03Speaker 2: close to a billion dollars over the past two years,
- 23:08Speaker 2: including today or this year and last year. And it's
- 23:12Speaker 2: all for affordable housing because there just ain't enough. And
- 23:17Speaker 2: the problem is, I did this story yesterday, is that
- 23:20Speaker 2: housing in general for multi-story buildings is, multi-density or more
- 23:26Speaker 2: dense buildings is where you put housing, of course. You know,
- 23:29Speaker 2: you don't do individual housing, affordable housing, because land is
- 23:32Speaker 2: too dear. And so this renovates and or builds new housing.
- 23:39Speaker 2: And it's not being built. It just isn't, because developers
- 23:43Speaker 2: can't make enough money.
- 23:44Speaker 3: That's all.
- 23:44Speaker 2: So that kind of multifamily units being built, that's dropped
- 23:50Speaker 2: roughly 30%.
- 23:52Speaker 3: How do they raise this much money? I mean, it's
- 23:54Speaker 3: almost half a billion dollars. How do they raise this?
- 23:57Speaker 2: Well, it's the mansion tax that any building or any
- 24:02Speaker 2: house or business or building sold over $ 5 million gets
- 24:06Speaker 2: taxed 4% of the entire purchase price. So if you
- 24:11Speaker 2: sell a property for $ 5 million, you get to pay
- 24:14Speaker 2: $ 200, 000 in taxes. to the city isn't that special.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 24:24Speaker 2: Is that 20,000 or is that 200,000? What's the math
- 24:27Speaker 2: on that? I'm not a math genius.
- 24:30Speaker 4: I graduated from a California high school.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Okay, 5% over $ 5 million if.
- 24:33Speaker 2: You sell a building for $ 750, 000 or $ 7. 5 million, which
- 24:35Speaker 2: you can. There are buildings, there are houses, there are
- 24:37Speaker 2: certainly commercial buildings that sell for that much money. And
- 24:50Speaker 2: this mansion tax, which is actually 5% over that, or 4%,
- 24:57Speaker 2: and then it goes to 7.5% over $ 10 million. Look
- 25:00Speaker 2: at the houses in Malibu or look at the houses
- 25:04Speaker 2: in Beverly Hills. It is not hard to find a
- 25:07Speaker 2: house that's over $ 10 million because this thing has raised...
- 25:11Speaker 2: I mean, it has raised $ 2 billion so far since
- 25:15Speaker 2: the tax was raised. And here's the bottom line the
- 25:18Speaker 2: tax was voted in. And here's the bottom line. The
- 25:21Speaker 2: bigger story is whenever money is needed, absolutely hit the
- 25:25Speaker 2: rich because the rich should not have as much money
- 25:28Speaker 2: as they do. And when they do have as much money,
- 25:31Speaker 2: let's take away as much as possible. That's the basic philosophy.
- 25:36Speaker 2: They have to pay their fair share. Oh, I have
- 25:39Speaker 2: a quick question before we leave. And that is, what
- 25:42Speaker 2: do you think a reasonable income tax should be?
- 25:48Speaker 3: Income tax rate. Neil, what would you think would be reasonable?
- 25:52Speaker 3: For income tax? Yeah, yeah. You know, income tax. What
- 25:55Speaker 3: would you pay on your income? What do you think
- 25:57Speaker 3: is reasonable? 10%. 10%. Okay.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Amy, what would you think would be a reasonable tax
- 26:04Speaker 2: if you were the king of the world?
- 26:07Speaker 7: Uh, I, yeah, I think 10% would be great.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Do you think, no, you think, I mean, that's reasonable
- 26:12Speaker 2: in terms of running governments. Uh, you guys are way,
- 26:15Speaker 2: way under, uh.
- 26:16Speaker 3: The government's too big. How about, I'm not arguing that.
- 26:19Speaker 2: I'm not arguing that the average when people are asked,
- 26:22Speaker 2: if you look at the surveys are about 30%, a third.
- 26:26Speaker 2: People are comfortable with a third going to the government.
- 26:30Speaker 7: I'm not comfortable with that.
- 26:32Speaker 3: I think it's too high. Of course it is.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I'm talking about the average American. They've done studies. Do
- 26:37Speaker 2: you know how much it is in California?
- 26:38Speaker 3: 52%.
- 26:41Speaker 7: I'm not comfortable with that either.
- 26:43Speaker 2: 52% if you make, yeah, I know, if you make
- 26:47Speaker 2: over a million dollars. 52% were the highest taxed state
- 26:50Speaker 2: in the United States by a long shot.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Oh, how about gas taxes? Oh, the highest. How about
- 26:56Speaker 3: property taxes? Among the highest. Yeah, we're number one. Isn't
- 27:03Speaker 3: that nice? We're number one. I think we.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Should tax people what they think we should be taxed.
- 27:08Speaker 4: So those that say 52%, they should be taxed at 52%.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Who thinks 52% is a reasonable tax other than Bernie Sanders?
- 27:16Speaker 3: That's what they were saying in California.
- 27:18Speaker 2: That's not what the people want. That's what the legislature
- 27:20Speaker 2: is putting in for state income tax. And that's the 13%
- 27:24Speaker 2: on top of the federal tax. Oh, because we are
- 27:27Speaker 2: a tax state. You can go to Orange. You can
- 27:29Speaker 2: go to Washington, Oregon. Washington or Oregon, no tax. You
- 27:34Speaker 2: can go to, I think, Wyoming, no tax. Income tax,
- 27:38Speaker 2: certainly Florida, no income tax. Texas, no income tax. Fix
- 27:42Speaker 2: our roads.
- 27:44Speaker 3: All right. Let's get out of here. We're done. Coming up.
- 27:48Speaker 2: There's a rocket crunch. You want to use a rocket
- 27:52Speaker 2: to lift up your satellite into space?
- 27:55Speaker 3: Get in line.
- 27:56Speaker 2: You've got to wait. I'll explain that. KFI AM 640.
- 28:00Speaker 1: You've been listening to The Bill Handel Show. Catch my
- 28:03Speaker 1: show Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
- 28:06Speaker 3: And anytime on demand on the iHeartRadio app.
