- 0:00Speaker 1: Bring you the Luxe Radio Theater, starring Loretta Young and
- 0:05Speaker 1: Van Johnson in Mother is a Freshman. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 0:10Speaker 1: your producer, Mr.
- 0:11Speaker 2: William Keeley. Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Fifteen years ago this week, a day when radio entertainment
- 0:26Speaker 3: was begun.
- 0:27Speaker 2: It was the Luxe Radio Theater.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Its purpose was to bring into American homes the finest
- 0:33Speaker 3: in drama played by the most important stars. Since that day,
- 0:37Speaker 3: a new generation has grown up and the Lux Radio
- 0:40Speaker 3: Theater with it. Now it's a part of the American scene,
- 0:44Speaker 3: an institution in millions of American homes. To celebrate this
- 0:49Speaker 3: 15th anniversary, we've selected a gay romantic comedy that brings
- 0:54Speaker 3: together two of this theater's top favorites, those very bright stars,
- 0:59Speaker 3: Loretta Young and Van Johnson. The play is Mother is
- 1:03Speaker 3: a Freshman, a 20th century.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Fox success you've requested so often.
- 1:09Speaker 3: You know, if Mother were to go back to college today,
- 1:11Speaker 3: she'd find it quite different than it was 15 years ago.
- 1:15Speaker 3: But some things would make her feel right at home.
- 1:17Speaker 3: For one, that familiar cake of Lux Toilet Soap.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Yes, even when Mother was a freshman, Lux Soap was
- 1:24Speaker 2: a favorite.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Complexion care of the loveliest girls on the campus. And
- 1:29Speaker 3: again tonight, as it has for 15 years, Lux makes
- 1:33Speaker 3: it possible for you to hear another hit play. As
- 1:36Speaker 3: the curtain rises on Mother is a Freshman, starring Loretta
- 1:39Speaker 3: Young as Abigail and Van Johnson as Richard.
- 1:51Speaker 2: It happens sometimes to the best of us. A terse
- 1:55Speaker 2: memorandum from.
- 1:55Speaker 3: The bank informing us that our balance is not sufficient
- 1:59Speaker 3: to cover our checks. It's happened this time to a
- 2:03Speaker 3: young and beautiful widow residing on Park Avenue in New York.
- 2:08Speaker 4: I'm back, Mom.
- 2:09Speaker 5: Know where I've been? I've been shopping.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Oh, Susan, not all those packages. Oh, darling, I told
- 2:14Speaker 4: you not to spend any more money, remember?
- 2:16Speaker 5: Didn't spend a shekel, Mom. Charged everything.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Oh, dear.
- 2:19Speaker 5: Here, this is for you.
- 2:20Speaker 4: A book. Oh, that's very thoughtful of you, dear.
- 2:23Speaker 5: It's the new one by John St. John.
- 2:25Speaker 4: The Grave Digger and the Chambermaid. Oh, Susie, really?
- 2:29Speaker 5: Guaranteed to turn your hair gray.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Oh, that's just what I need. Honestly, dear, how you
- 2:34Speaker 4: can waste good money on such trash like that?
- 2:35Speaker 5: Well, that's okay, Mom.
- 2:36Speaker 4: You're welcome.
- 2:37Speaker 5: Mom, look at this dress. Isn't it a dream?
- 2:40Speaker 4: Yes, dear, it's beautiful. But I'm sorry, it'll have to
- 2:43Speaker 4: go back.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Mom!
- 2:44Speaker 4: I just heard from the bank and we're overdrawn.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Well, then why don't you call John Heaslip? Just tell
- 2:48Speaker 5: him to put some more money in our account.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Oh, you know how upset he gets whenever I'm over.
- 2:52Speaker 5: Personally, I think John likes our economic crisis. Gives him
- 2:55Speaker 5: a chance to wave that torch he's been carrying.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Oh, don't be silly, dear. Now, about this dress.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Oh, I just have to have it, Mom, for the
- 3:01Speaker 5: sophomore cotillion. Richard will love it.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Richard. Oh, yes, yes. He's the president of the student body,
- 3:07Speaker 4: isn't he?
- 3:07Speaker 5: Mom, no. That's Beaumont Jackson.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Oh, oh, yes.
- 3:10Speaker 5: He's a schmo.
- 3:11Speaker 4: A what? What's that?
- 3:13Speaker 5: Oh, you know, a dope, a drip. A drip?
- 3:16Speaker 4: Oh, that reminds me, I must call John.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Uh, dear, who is Richard?
- 3:21Speaker 5: Mother, don't you ever listen to me. Richard Michaels, professor
- 3:25Speaker 5: of English Lit.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Oh, that's nice, dear, a professor. A professor? Uh-huh. Oh,
- 3:30Speaker 4: but Susie... Is he one of your bows?
- 3:33Speaker 5: Oh, Mom, you're so old-fashioned. Those berries have broken down.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Oh, have they?
- 3:38Speaker 6: Well, of course.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Pointer is a modern college.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Oh, I see. Well, uh, how old is this Professor Michaels?
- 3:46Speaker 5: Oh, he's sort of, well, ageless. Maybe around 35.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Oh, my dear, I'm around 35.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Oh, but it's different with you, Mom. Your life's over.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Oh, is it?
- 3:59Speaker 5: Oh, but he hasn't even begun to live.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Oh. Oh, Susie, I don't like it. I don't like
- 4:05Speaker 4: it a bit. It just isn't... Excuse me a minute. Hello? Oh, hello, John.
- 4:11Speaker 4: I was just going to call you.
- 4:13Speaker 7: Well, yes, I know, but when you're trying to outfit
- 4:16Speaker 7: a girl for college and redecorate an apartment, will it.
- 4:19Speaker 4: What? Why, John, I couldn't be. But that's impossible. I'll
- 4:25Speaker 4: be right down.
- 4:27Speaker 5: Well, what it.
- 4:29Speaker 4: It must be a mistake.
- 4:30Speaker 6: Well, what is it?
- 4:31Speaker 4: Well, he said you weren't going back to college.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Mother, that's impossible.
- 4:35Speaker 4: Now, don't worry, dear. I'll see to this right now. John,
- 4:45Speaker 4: I don't think you understand.
- 4:47Speaker 6: I understand that your expenditures have been simply disgraceful.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Oh, you've already said that. Now, as for Susan, how
- 4:53Speaker 4: can you expect her to go back to Pointer College without.
- 4:55Speaker 6: I don't expect Susan to go back to Pointer at all.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Now, John, you're just trying to scare me again, aren't you?
- 5:00Speaker 6: No, Abby, I'm not.
- 5:01Speaker 2: You're broke. Dead broke.
- 5:04Speaker 4: But the trust fund that Henry left for me, I
- 5:06Speaker 4: couldn't have spent all that.
- 5:08Speaker 6: But the trust fund is payable only every three years.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:11Speaker 6: Your next payment isn't available until February.
- 5:13Speaker 4: But that's five months. Oh, John, Susan must go back
- 5:17Speaker 4: to Pointer. And where am I going to get the
- 5:19Speaker 4: money to pay for her tuition?
- 5:20Speaker 2: Well.
- 5:21Speaker 6: There's one way, my dear.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Oh, no, no, thank you. Let's not go into that again.
- 5:26Speaker 6: Abby, please. Why, we're perfectly mated. Anyone can see that.
- 5:29Speaker 6: And moreover.
- 5:30Speaker 4: No, there must be another way. Uh, John, is my
- 5:35Speaker 4: maiden name legal?
- 5:36Speaker 6: Well, yes, if you care to use it.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Oh?
- 5:39Speaker 6: And what makes you ask that?
- 5:40Speaker 4: Oh, nothing, nothing at all. And thank you, John. Thank
- 5:42Speaker 4: you for everything.
- 5:43Speaker 6: But, Abby, what's your hurry? Abby!
- 5:46Speaker 8: You don't.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Have to spare me, Mom. I know it isn't your fault.
- 5:57Speaker 5: No money, huh?
- 5:58Speaker 4: Paupers. Till next February.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Well, couldn't you borrow the money from John? He's so
- 6:03Speaker 5: crazy about you.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Susie, I better explain something to you. John Heaslip has
- 6:07Speaker 4: an obsession against lending or borrowing money.
- 6:10Speaker 7: And though he may be crazy about me, he is
- 6:12Speaker 7: crazier about his obsession.
- 6:14Speaker 4: See?
- 6:15Speaker 2: Oh. Uh-huh.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Well, we'll just have to go to work, then. I'll
- 6:18Speaker 5: get a job on campus, and you can get a
- 6:19Speaker 5: job here. Department store, maybe, or some sweatshop, or.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Mom, you're not listening.
- 6:26Speaker 5: What's that you're reading?
- 6:27Speaker 4: This booklet. It's all about the endowments to Poynter College. Oh,
- 6:32Speaker 4: here it is. It's right here.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Huh?
- 6:34Speaker 4: The Abigail Fortitude Scholarship. For any female of good character
- 6:38Speaker 4: and refinement with the name of Abigail Fortitude, the sum
- 6:41Speaker 4: of $ 3, 000 per annum shall be made available. So what? Well, $ 3, 000
- 6:47Speaker 4: is a lot of money.
- 6:48Speaker 5: Yes, but don't you see the catch? You've got to
- 6:50Speaker 5: have a name like Abigail Fortitude.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Well, my maiden name happens to be that.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Oh, I know, Mom, but you're the last. And I'll
- 6:57Speaker 5: never stop thanking you for finding a different name for me.
- 7:01Speaker 4: You know, dear, I've been thinking.
- 7:02Speaker 9: Oh, sure.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Great-grandma Abigail gave money to Poynter. Then she fixed it
- 7:05Speaker 5: so only her own family could use it.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Well, then why don't we use it?
- 7:09Speaker 5: Because my name isn't Abigail Fo... You?
- 7:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 5: Oh, my gosh.
- 7:15Speaker 10: Golly, gee.
- 7:17Speaker 4: No.
- 7:18Speaker 6: It wouldn't work.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Now, why not?
- 7:20Speaker 5: Well, what about college entrance exams? You've never passed them.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Well, now, Susie, it's up to you to see that
- 7:24Speaker 4: I do pass them. Look here, dear, you don't seem
- 7:27Speaker 4: to understand. If I don't go to Poynter, you're not
- 7:29Speaker 4: going back either.
- 7:30Speaker 7: Now, this $ 3, 000 endowment will see us both through to February,
- 7:34Speaker 7: at which time we collect on our trust fund.
- 7:36Speaker 5: Oh, if we could only do it.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Of course we can. I'll use my maiden name, and
- 7:40Speaker 4: nobody need know that I'm your mother. And now, about
- 7:43Speaker 4: those entrance exams.
- 7:45Speaker 5: Oh, they're murder.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Oh, come now, dear, they couldn't be that difficult.
- 7:48Speaker 8: Oh, no?
- 7:48Speaker 4: No.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Prove the two triangles are congruent if the hypotenuse and
- 7:52Speaker 5: side of one are equal to ditto. I beg your pardon?
- 7:54Speaker 4: Ha!
- 7:56Speaker 5: Give a concise statement of Dalton's atomic theory. Describe the
- 7:59Speaker 5: structure of a typical dichotoledonous stem.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Oh, Susie, that doesn't even sound like English. See what
- 8:04Speaker 4: I mean? Oh, well. Well, in that case, I guess
- 8:08Speaker 4: we'd better get to work right away. Susie, drag out
- 8:10Speaker 4: those textbooks of yours and start educating me.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Gotta hand it to you, Mom. That's the old Abigail
- 8:16Speaker 5: Fortitude Fortitude. Wonderful, Mom.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Aren't you thrilled? This is it.
- 8:28Speaker 5: You're on the campus.
- 8:29Speaker 4: Yes, I know, dear. And there's the dean's office.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Oh, you. Now get in there.
- 8:33Speaker 4: All right, but where will you be?
- 8:35Speaker 5: Oh, I just may stop by and say hello to
- 8:37Speaker 5: Professor Michaels.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Professor Michaels?
- 8:39Speaker 2: Oh, oh, yes.
- 8:40Speaker 5: Oh, he probably won't be in. Classes don't start till tomorrow,
- 8:43Speaker 5: you know. Well, I'll see you at the freshman door, Mom.
- 8:46Speaker 8: Happy landing.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Yes, dear, and thank you again.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yes, come in.
- 8:52Speaker 5: Hello, Professor Michaels.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Susan Abbott. Well, for heaven's sake. It's good to see you.
- 8:58Speaker 5: Oh, it's wonderful to see you, too.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Did you have a good summer?
- 9:02Speaker 5: Oh, sensational. Only I couldn't wait to get back. I
- 9:05Speaker 5: thought September would never come.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I know just how you feel.
- 9:09Speaker 5: You're going to let me help you again, aren't you?
- 9:11Speaker 5: I mean, correcting papers and stuff?
- 9:13Speaker 2: Oh, you bet I am. But this year you've got
- 9:15Speaker 2: to give the boys a break, too.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Boys?
- 9:18Speaker 5: Oh, a girl gets so bored, Professor Michaels... But working
- 9:21Speaker 5: with you is an intellectual experience.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Now, don't tell me you'd rather have an intellectual experience
- 9:27Speaker 2: and be the belle of the ball at the sophomore cotillion.
- 9:30Speaker 5: If I were dancing with you, I'd have both.
- 9:33Speaker 8: Me?
- 9:33Speaker 2: I wouldn't be found dead at a student dance.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Oh.
- 9:37Speaker 5: Well, I've got to run, Professor. See you in class tomorrow.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Nice of you to drop in, Susan.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Goodbye.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Goodbye.
- 9:43Speaker 4: And good night.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Good night.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Parting is such sweet sorrow. That I shall say goodnight
- 9:50Speaker 5: till it be morrow.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Oh, that's very good, Susan. Very good. Hello? Hello?
- 10:00Speaker 4: Is Western Union. We have a telegram for Professor Richard Michaels.
- 10:03Speaker 2: This is Professor Michaels.
- 10:04Speaker 10: It's from New York City.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Happy to inform you your book, Grave Digger and the Chambermaid,
- 10:10Speaker 4: has just jumped on bestseller list.
- 10:13Speaker 9: It's signed, Williams and Sons Publishers.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Bestseller list, huh? Well, what do you know? Thank you.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Thanks very much.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Tell you, Dean Gillingham, that new book you wanted. Well,
- 10:30Speaker 4: I finally got it.
- 10:31Speaker 6: Oh, The Gravedigger and the Chambermaid?
- 10:32Speaker 4: You ought to be ashamed of yourself.
- 10:35Speaker 11: I have a very good reason for being interested in
- 10:37Speaker 11: that book.
- 10:37Speaker 4: I may blackmail you someday, reading stuff like that. Well,
- 10:42Speaker 4: ready for the next patient? A freshman named Abigail Fortitude.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Oh, yes. Send her in, Miss Harper.
- 10:47Speaker 4: This way, Miss Fortitude. Oh, thank you, thank you. Dean Gillingham.
- 10:53Speaker 11: Sit down, Miss Fortitude.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Thank you. Uh.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Not nervous, are you?
- 10:59Speaker 5: Yes, a little.
- 11:00Speaker 6: Oh, but why?
- 11:01Speaker 11: Your entrance examinations are not exemplary, at least all in order.
- 11:06Speaker 6: And I'm happy to welcome you to Poynter. Oh, thank you.
- 11:09Speaker 11: You realize, of course, that your matriculation is most unusual.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Yes, I was afraid that... Well, a woman of my
- 11:16Speaker 4: age coming to college.
- 11:17Speaker 6: Oh, what a silly thought.
- 11:19Speaker 11: What I meant by unusual is the fact that you're
- 11:21Speaker 11: the first girl in 55 years to use the Abigail
- 11:24Speaker 11: Fortitude Scholarship.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Oh, well, you see, she was my grandmother.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Yes, I know.
- 11:28Speaker 11: Well, it's very good to see you here.
- 11:31Speaker 6: What's the use of educating the children, I always say,
- 11:35Speaker 6: if we don't educate the parents, too?
- 11:39Speaker 4: You mean.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Oh, have no fears.
- 11:41Speaker 6: I'll keep your horrid secret, Mrs.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Abbott.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Oh.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Then you do know.
- 11:45Speaker 11: After all, you and Susan share the same home address
- 11:47Speaker 11: on your registration card.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Oh, my goodness. We never thought of that. You see,
- 11:52Speaker 4: we didn't want anyone to find out.
- 11:55Speaker 6: Oh, I assure you the fact will never fall from
- 11:57Speaker 6: my lips.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Oh, thank you.
- 11:59Speaker 11: Good luck, Miss Fortitude. And remember where I am if
- 12:02Speaker 11: you want me.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Oh, that's very nice of you. Goodbye.
- 12:06Speaker 6: Goodbye, Dean. Goodbye, my dear. And let me see, where
- 12:10Speaker 6: is that?
- 12:12Speaker 11: Oh, the grave digger in the chamber made by John St.
- 12:16Speaker 4: John.
- 12:18Speaker 6: John St. John, indeed.
- 12:26Speaker 4: Susie? Hi, Mom.
- 12:28Speaker 9: Oh, not Mom.
- 12:29Speaker 6: Abby.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Oh, golly, I forgot.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 12:31Speaker 5: How'd you make out with Dean Gillingham?
- 12:33Speaker 4: Oh, I think he's the nicest man I ever met.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Oh, he's a charmer, all right. Richard Michael says he's
- 12:38Speaker 5: one of the greatest educators in the country.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Oh, well, I can believe that. He made me feel
- 12:42Speaker 4: just a little like a cheat.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Why?
- 12:44Speaker 7: Oh, he was so pleased that I'd come to Poynter
- 12:47Speaker 7: to finish my education.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Oh, I wouldn't let it bother me.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Well, it does bother me, since I'm only here to
- 12:51Speaker 4: put my hands on some money.
- 12:53Speaker 5: I've got news for you.
- 12:54Speaker 4: What?
- 12:55Speaker 5: If you plan to stay here, you're going to get
- 12:57Speaker 5: an education, whether you want one or not. Otherwise, you
- 12:59Speaker 5: go right out on your ear.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Oh, now, Susie, I told you time and time again
- 13:02Speaker 4: not to talk that way.
- 13:03Speaker 9: Abby!
- 13:05Speaker 5: Yes? I'll have to caution you not to correct people
- 13:07Speaker 5: as if you were their mother.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Oh?
- 13:09Speaker 5: Other people might catch on, see?
- 13:11Speaker 2: Oh. Oh, yes.
- 13:13Speaker 5: I've been fixing up your room.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Oh, dear, you did a good job. Thank you. That's wonderful.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Look out the window. Huh?
- 13:19Speaker 2: See?
- 13:20Speaker 5: There's my sorority house on the other side of the green.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Oh, yes. Well, at least we're close by. Well, what
- 13:25Speaker 4: do I do now?
- 13:26Speaker 5: Register for classes. All right. Only you're not going to
- 13:28Speaker 5: Doremus Hall looking like that.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Well, why? What's the matter with me?
- 13:32Speaker 5: Your clothes. Look, this is college, not Fifth Avenue.
- 13:35Speaker 7: Oh, dear, this is the most conservative thing I own.
- 13:38Speaker 5: At home, maybe, but not here.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Oh.
- 13:40Speaker 5: First of all, your hair.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Oh.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Take out those bobby pins and let it down.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Let it down?
- 13:44Speaker 5: And ditch the hat.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Oh, you don't like it?
- 13:46Speaker 5: Abby, freshmen don't wear hats. Not even at Doremus Hall.
- 13:50Speaker 5: Now step on it. Start fixing your hair.
- 14:00Speaker 4: I beg your pardon. I'm supposed to register here, but
- 14:02Speaker 4: I don't have.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Well, hi, Angel Eyes. Just see the student advisor.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Yow! What is it? Is something wrong?
- 14:09Speaker 9: Wrong?
- 14:10Speaker 5: Woo-woo!
- 14:12Speaker 4: Young man, if you don't want to tell me where I.
- 14:15Speaker 9: Oh, I'll tell you anything you want to know, baby.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Oh? Where's your card?
- 14:19Speaker 10: Here.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Table G, dream puss.
- 14:24Speaker 5: Over there.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Thank you very much.
- 14:27Speaker 9: Pardon me, lady. This is Pointer College. The store club
- 14:29Speaker 9: is south of here.
- 14:31Speaker 4: I'm a student here. Here's my card.
- 14:34Speaker 9: Abigail Fortitude.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Yes.
- 14:36Speaker 4: You? That's right.
- 14:39Speaker 9: Oh, don't get sore, honey. The name just doesn't go
- 14:41Speaker 9: with the scenery. Freshman, huh?
- 14:45Speaker 4: Yes. My, my.
- 14:47Speaker 9: You just out of the army or something?
- 14:50Speaker 4: No, no.
- 14:51Speaker 9: You married?
- 14:53Speaker 4: No.
- 14:54Speaker 9: Well, Abigail, what's your major going to be? Major?
- 14:59Speaker 4: What's a major?
- 15:00Speaker 9: Well, you see, in college, you've got to major in
- 15:02Speaker 9: one subject which indicates the type of career you have
- 15:05Speaker 9: cut out for yourself.
- 15:06Speaker 5: Oh.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Well, what does Richard Michaels teach?
- 15:11Speaker 9: Richard Michaels?
- 15:11Speaker 2: Aye.
- 15:12Speaker 4: What does he teach?
- 15:13Speaker 9: Iniquity.
- 15:14Speaker 4: What?
- 15:15Speaker 9: Thinly disguised with Shakespearean sonnets and officially labeled English literature.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Oh.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Well, I'd better major in that.
- 15:25Speaker 9: Abigail Fortitude, you too?
- 15:35Speaker 5: Hey, what's your hurry? Wait a minute. Well, me?
- 15:37Speaker 4: Yes.
- 15:38Speaker 5: We freshmen have to stick together.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Oh.
- 15:40Speaker 5: My name's Rhoda Adams.
- 15:41Speaker 4: Well, hello, Rhoda. I'm Abigail Fortitude.
- 15:44Speaker 5: You going English lit?
- 15:46Speaker 4: Yes, yes. Good, so am I. I, uh, I wish
- 15:50Speaker 4: I weren't so nervous.
- 15:51Speaker 5: I'm scared spitless.
- 15:52Speaker 4: You're what?
- 15:54Speaker 5: I'm scared spitless.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Oh, my dear, don't say things like that. Oh, Nat,
- 15:58Speaker 4: you're scared spitless, so am I.
- 16:01Speaker 5: It's that Richard Michaels. They say he's a heavenly hunk
- 16:04Speaker 5: of professor.
- 16:05Speaker 7: Oh, I didn't mean I was nervous about that. Well,
- 16:07Speaker 7: it's just that this is my first class, and everything
- 16:10Speaker 7: is so new and strange, and it has nothing to
- 16:13Speaker 7: do with Richard Michaels.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what I keep telling myself.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Well, there he is.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Oh.
- 16:21Speaker 5: You said it. Come on, let's find a place to sit.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Yes, sir?
- 16:28Speaker 2: What's your name?
- 16:30Speaker 5: Abigail Fortitude.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Fortitude. Well, Miss Fortitude, I am not myopic, and I
- 16:36Speaker 2: have an uncanny sense of intuition when one of my
- 16:38Speaker 2: students is unprepared. I can spot him in the last
- 16:41Speaker 2: row just as readily as the first. So why don't
- 16:43Speaker 2: you take that seat there next to Miss Sharp?
- 16:46Speaker 4: Yes, certainly.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Hello, Miss Sharp.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Oh, hello, Professor Michaels.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Back for another try, eh? Don't you think you're in
- 16:56Speaker 2: a rut?
- 16:57Speaker 4: Oh, I'll pass this time, Professor Michaels, if I can
- 16:59Speaker 4: keep my mind on my work.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Yeah, all right. All right, let's come to order. This
- 17:05Speaker 2: first session is going to be very short, so you
- 17:07Speaker 2: needn't brace yourselves. In studying the text of Shakespeare, as
- 17:11Speaker 2: we intend to do, we repeatedly find the theme of
- 17:14Speaker 2: love used over and over again. And yet, in all
- 17:17Speaker 2: the works... So starting tomorrow, I'll attempt to expose your
- 17:25Speaker 2: minds to Shakespeare. If some of you choose to sleep,
- 17:28Speaker 2: that is your problem. If some of you choose to
- 17:31Speaker 2: listen and learn, that is my problem. Meantime, the class
- 17:35Speaker 2: is dismissed. Miss Fortitude?
- 17:38Speaker 5: Yes?
- 17:38Speaker 2: In my office, please.
- 17:40Speaker 4: Oh, I'm sorry, Professor, but I have another class.
- 17:42Speaker 2: I have just dismissed this one 40 minutes early. This way,
- 17:45Speaker 2: Miss Fortitude.
- 17:46Speaker 4: Uh, yes, Professor.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Have a seat, Miss Fortitude.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 17:53Speaker 2: That's rather an odd name.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Isn't it? It's the family name.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Any relation to old Abigail Fortitude, that great pinch-penny philanthropist
- 18:01Speaker 2: or pointer?
- 18:02Speaker 4: My grandmother.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Oh.
- 18:05Speaker 4: I'm using her scholarship here.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Well, I didn't exactly mean that she wasn't a great philanthropist.
- 18:09Speaker 4: No, no, I didn't think you did, Professor.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Miss Fortitude, would you answer a simple question?
- 18:14Speaker 4: Why, yes, if I can.
- 18:16Speaker 2: What the devil are you doing here? Why are you
- 18:19Speaker 2: majoring in my course?
- 18:21Speaker 4: That's two questions, Professor, and the answer is the same
- 18:23Speaker 4: for both, to get an education.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Are you trying to tell me there's anything left for
- 18:27Speaker 2: you to.
- 18:27Speaker 4: What do you mean by that remark?
- 18:29Speaker 2: Well, I didn't mean what you thought I meant. It's
- 18:30Speaker 2: just that you are a mature woman and apparently very sophisticated.
- 18:35Speaker 4: You never saw me before, and suddenly you seem to
- 18:37Speaker 4: know all about me.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Oh, now, wait a second. It's just that I'm used
- 18:41Speaker 2: to kids, and, well, you're sort of in my league.
- 18:44Speaker 4: Well, I don't think I'm that matured, Professor.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Don't misunderstand me. It's just that it's a little unusual for... Well,
- 18:52Speaker 2: isn't it a little late for you to be getting
- 18:54Speaker 2: an education?
- 18:54Speaker 4: No, I don't think so.
- 18:55Speaker 7: But if you doubt that one's available for me in
- 18:57Speaker 7: your class, I'll be happy to have myself transferred.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Professor Michaels, I am not one bit interested in how
- 19:02Speaker 4: you came to teach at Poynter. And I don't see
- 19:04Speaker 4: why you should be interested in why I came to
- 19:06Speaker 4: be taught at Poynter.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Oh, now you're angry. Please, I was curious, that's all.
- 19:11Speaker 4: Well, curiosity killed the cat.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Good morning, Miss Ford.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Good morning, Professor Michaels.
- 19:28Speaker 3: In a few moments, we'll continue with the second act
- 19:30Speaker 3: of Mother.
- 19:31Speaker 5: Is a Freshman.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Now, Mr. William Keeley, our producer.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Act two of Mother is a Freshman, starring Loretta Young
- 19:38Speaker 3: as Abigail and Van Johnson as Richard.
- 19:42Speaker 2: THE END.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Financed by a $ 3, 000 scholarship, Abigail Fortitude is now the
- 19:55Speaker 3: oldest and prettiest freshman ever to enter Poynter College, where
- 19:59Speaker 3: her daughter Susan.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Is a sophomore.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Right now, Abigail's in class, and Professor Richard Michaels is
- 20:06Speaker 3: discovering how interesting his work.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Can be, And out on the campus, Susan and an
- 20:12Speaker 2: old boyfriend... Okay.
- 20:14Speaker 9: Susie, now, what about the sophomore cotillion?
- 20:17Speaker 5: Well, it's still a month off, Bo. I'll let you know, huh?
- 20:20Speaker 4: Why?
- 20:21Speaker 9: Somebody else asked you?
- 20:22Speaker 5: Well, not exactly.
- 20:24Speaker 9: Yeah, I know who... Susie, what's got into you?
- 20:27Speaker 5: I'm sorry, Bo. You're one of the nicest boys I know,
- 20:30Speaker 5: and I always want to be friends with you.
- 20:32Speaker 9: Friends? You hate me, don't you?
- 20:37Speaker 5: Oh, now, really?
- 20:38Speaker 9: Yeah, well, even if Professor Michaels did go to the
- 20:40Speaker 9: sophomore cotillion, it wouldn't be with you.
- 20:42Speaker 5: It wouldn't?
- 20:42Speaker 9: Uh-uh, not with that Abigail Fortitude around. Or haven't you heard?
- 20:46Speaker 5: Abigail Fortitude? Now, you're just being silly. An older woman
- 20:50Speaker 5: like that going to college, well, naturally she's conspicuous, but.
- 20:55Speaker 9: I'll say she is.
- 20:56Speaker 5: She deserves a little more attention.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Okay, Susie, you win.
- 21:00Speaker 9: Just let me know about the cotillion.
- 21:03Speaker 5: Mother... Mother and Richard Michaels.
- 21:07Speaker 4: But that's absurd.
- 21:08Speaker 2: I'm coming to class tomorrow morning prepared to discuss King Lear.
- 21:17Speaker 2: That's all. Class dismissed. Miss Fortitude.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Yes?
- 21:20Speaker 2: May I see you, please?
- 21:21Speaker 4: Oh, yes, Professor Michaels.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Close the door, Fortitude.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Surely.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Have a seat.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Did you get my theme, Professor?
- 21:32Speaker 2: Not quite.
- 21:33Speaker 4: Well, I handed it in.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Yes, I know. I read it. But I didn't get it.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Oh.
- 21:38Speaker 2: That's why I wanted to see you. Oh. Your ideas
- 21:41Speaker 2: are excellent fortitude.
- 21:42Speaker 4: Yes.
- 21:42Speaker 2: But your rhetoric, well, it leaves a lot to be desired.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Oh, dear.
- 21:47Speaker 2: No, no. Don't be discouraged. You just need help on
- 21:49Speaker 2: your academic approach.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Oh.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Oh.
- 21:53Speaker 4: And you're going to help me?
- 21:54Speaker 2: Oh, yes, indeed.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Yes, I see.
- 21:57Speaker 2: And not only that, but I'm going to have to
- 21:59Speaker 2: turn the heat on.
- 21:59Speaker 4: The heat?
- 22:01Speaker 2: Yes. You're too self-conscious, Fortitude.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Oh?
- 22:05Speaker 2: You're nervous. I get the feeling that you resent me.
- 22:08Speaker 2: But that, of course, is only a sublimation of your
- 22:10Speaker 2: fear of failure.
- 22:11Speaker 4: It is?
- 22:12Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Oh.
- 22:13Speaker 2: You know, English literature can be fun. And I'm going
- 22:16Speaker 2: to show you just how much fun. You must learn
- 22:19Speaker 2: to relax.
- 22:19Speaker 4: Well, thanks just the same, Professor. But I think I'll manage.
- 22:23Speaker 2: You don't want to flunk, do you?
- 22:24Speaker 4: Oh, no. No, I can't flunk.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Well, then you'd better let me work with you. Oh.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Well, all right, if you say so.
- 22:31Speaker 2: And I think we'll work nights.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Nights?
- 22:34Speaker 6: Yes.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Here? Oh, no. We may as well be comfortable. Suppose
- 22:38Speaker 2: you have dinner with me at my house, say, around
- 22:40Speaker 2: 7 o'clock.
- 22:41Speaker 4: No, I'm sorry, Professor, but I can't do that.
- 22:44Speaker 2: I'm afraid you'd better.
- 22:46Speaker 4: Oh.
- 22:47Speaker 2: I live on Faculty Row number 17, right across from
- 22:49Speaker 2: the circle.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Professor, I don't think I ought to take up your
- 22:51Speaker 4: time like that. I think after all... What?
- 22:53Speaker 2: What did you... That's just what I'm here for.
- 22:56Speaker 4: Yes, Professor.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Here she comes, Beulah. Look out the window. Did you
- 23:08Speaker 2: see her? Mm-mm.
- 23:10Speaker 6: What a freshman.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Oh, I admire her greatly, Beulah. She's determined to get
- 23:14Speaker 2: an education.
- 23:15Speaker 4: She's coming to the right place to get it. Excuse me, Professor.
- 23:17Speaker 2: I'd better get them land shops and all.
- 23:20Speaker 9: Well.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Am I late?
- 23:23Speaker 2: No, Fortitude. Come in, come in.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 23:27Speaker 2: You look absolutely beautiful.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Well, thank you, Professor.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Oh, let's skip that Professor stuff. Call me Richard.
- 23:34Speaker 9: Oh, Richard.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Come in to me.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Make yourself comfortable. I'll fix a drink. How do you
- 23:39Speaker 2: like my lair?
- 23:40Speaker 4: Well, it smells good.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Oh, that's the incense. You have to burn it to
- 23:45Speaker 2: get the traditions out of the woodwork. Incense, yes. I
- 23:49Speaker 2: hope you like martinis.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Oh, no, thank you.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I mix them very dry.
- 23:53Speaker 4: Oh, no, no, thank you.
- 23:54Speaker 2: You don't like martinis?
- 23:56Speaker 4: Well, I'm a student here.
- 23:58Speaker 2: But you're over 21, aren't you?
- 24:00Speaker 4: Oh, yes.
- 24:01Speaker 9: Just.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Well, they're good for you. Make you relax. Lose your inhibitions.
- 24:07Speaker 4: Oh, you know, sometimes I think inhibitions are very good
- 24:10Speaker 4: for people, Professor. I think that.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Oh, you know what I mean.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Yes, I do know what you mean.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Well, let's sit down and be comfortable, shall we? Now,
- 24:19Speaker 2: the springs are coming out of that chair.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Oh.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Let's just share the sofa, shall we?
- 24:23Speaker 4: Well, yes, thank you.
- 24:26Speaker 2: You don't mind, do you?
- 24:27Speaker 4: No, not if you like.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Well, here's to you, Abby, and to a wonderful evening.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I can't tell you how much I look forward to this.
- 24:36Speaker 9: Oh, really?
- 24:38Speaker 2: Something wrong with your cocktail?
- 24:39Speaker 4: Oh, no, no, it's fine.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Then drink it, drink it, so I can freshen up. Oh, surely. Yes, Abby,
- 24:45Speaker 2: I've got to confess, I'm glad you're weak. In English,
- 24:49Speaker 2: that is. It gives me a chance not only to
- 24:51Speaker 2: help you, but to know you well.
- 24:53Speaker 4: Well, that's very kind of you, Professor.
- 24:56Speaker 2: I want to know you very well.
- 24:59Speaker 9: Oh, dear. Oh, dear.
- 25:00Speaker 2: What's the matter?
- 25:01Speaker 4: I just remembered. I'm awfully sorry, but I just remembered.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Remember? Where are you going?
- 25:05Speaker 4: Oh, it's very thoughtless of me, but I just remembered.
- 25:06Speaker 4: I have another date, and I can't break it.
- 25:08Speaker 2: But, Abby, for heaven's sake, you just can't just walk out.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Oh, I said I was sorry.
- 25:12Speaker 2: But what about your coaching?
- 25:13Speaker 4: Oh, well, some other time, perhaps.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Can't you break your other date?
- 25:16Speaker 4: Oh, no, that would be rude.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Rude? Yes. What about me? What about my plans for tonight?
- 25:21Speaker 2: I've arranged everything.
- 25:23Speaker 4: I know. Then you needn't bother coming to the door
- 25:26Speaker 4: with me.
- 25:27Speaker 5: Good night, Professor.
- 25:27Speaker 10: Good night.
- 25:28Speaker 6: Miss Fortitude, well, how nice to see you.
- 25:31Speaker 4: Why, uh, Dean Gillingham.
- 25:33Speaker 6: And this is my wife, Miss Fortitude.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Margaret, here's the young lady I was telling you about,
- 25:36Speaker 2: Abigail Fortitude.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Oh, how do you do, my dear? Oh, how do
- 25:39Speaker 4: you do, Mrs. Gillingham? Well, Richard, I see we all
- 25:42Speaker 4: arrived at the same time.
- 25:43Speaker 2: No, Miss Fortitude is just leaving. She has another date. Oh. Abigail,
- 25:48Speaker 2: but you're spoiling our evening.
- 25:50Speaker 6: You don't think we enjoy dining with this dull young man.
- 25:52Speaker 4: Do you? Well, as a matter of fact... Well, it was.
- 25:55Speaker 11: Only on his promise that you'd be here that we
- 25:57Speaker 11: agreed to come.
- 25:58Speaker 4: Oh.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Oh.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Well, my headache is a little better.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Headache? I thought you said... Would you like a martini, Mrs.
- 26:09Speaker 11: Gillingham?
- 26:10Speaker 4: Why, yes, I would. So would I.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Well, allow me.
- 26:13Speaker 4: Thank you, Richard. Yes, thank you, Richard. You know, Miss Fortitude,
- 26:18Speaker 4: you're really more than my husband described you. And he
- 26:21Speaker 4: was simply outrageous.
- 26:23Speaker 6: And how's college life agreeing with.
- 26:25Speaker 2: You, Abigail?
- 26:25Speaker 4: Oh, well, I must be up. Never been happier.
- 26:30Speaker 6: I'm sitting over here, Abigail.
- 26:32Speaker 4: Oh, yes. Yes, she knows it, dear.
- 26:36Speaker 11: Well, I really wasn't worried about you becoming acclimated, Mrs.
- 26:39Speaker 4: Abbott. Oh, no?
- 26:40Speaker 2: And what do you think of your fellow students?
- 26:42Speaker 4: Oh, I think they're wonderful.
- 26:44Speaker 7: But I'm simply amazed how they can study some serious
- 26:47Speaker 7: subject and at the same time read things like the
- 26:50Speaker 7: comic strips.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Oh, Gilly would rather miss a train than Lil Abner.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Oh, not really, Margaret.
- 26:56Speaker 7: Well, I just don't understand how anyone can study a
- 26:58Speaker 7: complex subject like chemistry, for instance, or political economy, and
- 27:03Speaker 7: then sit right down to a blood-curdling murder mystery. You know,
- 27:07Speaker 7: as I left tonight, the girl across the hall was
- 27:09Speaker 7: reading an awfully lowered thing.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Let me see.
- 27:10Speaker 4: I think it was called The Grave Digger in the Chamber.
- 27:14Speaker 4: What's the matter with you, Richard?
- 27:18Speaker 2: I'll be sorry. This martini. I must have swallowed the olive. Oh,
- 27:22Speaker 2: too bad.
- 27:23Speaker 4: And now, about that book.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Oh, thank you, Beulah. Nice timing. Wonderful evening, Richard. Very edifying.
- 27:43Speaker 6: Good night.
- 27:44Speaker 5: Next week at our house.
- 27:45Speaker 4: We'll let you know, Abigail.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Good night, my dear.
- 27:48Speaker 4: Good night. Now, if I may have my coat.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Abigail, you're not leaving, too.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Well, I have to be back at the freshman dorm
- 27:57Speaker 4: before 12, you know.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I know. You know, usually the Gilliams don't stay past
- 28:02Speaker 2: 9 o'clock.
- 28:02Speaker 4: Oh? I'm glad they do. My books?
- 28:08Speaker 2: Right here. Come on, I'll walk you over.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 28:14Speaker 2: I didn't know you were married, Abby.
- 28:15Speaker 4: I'm not.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Before dinner, I distinctly heard Dean Gillingham calling you Mrs.
- 28:20Speaker 7: Abbott.
- 28:20Speaker 2: He did? Yes.
- 28:22Speaker 4: Oh, I'm so sorry. He was supposed to keep that
- 28:25Speaker 4: a secret.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Oh, then you are married.
- 28:28Speaker 4: No. No, I'm a widow. Eight years now.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Oh, that's wonderful. Oh, I don't mean about you being
- 28:33Speaker 2: a widow. I mean if I'm not married.
- 28:35Speaker 4: No, no, I know what you mean.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Abbott. Abbott? Yes.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Like in Susan?
- 28:44Speaker 2: Mrs. Abbott?
- 28:44Speaker 4: Hmm?
- 28:45Speaker 2: You? Her mother?
- 28:48Speaker 4: That's right.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Impossible. Oh, no, no, I can't believe it. You're practically
- 28:53Speaker 2: as young as she is.
- 28:53Speaker 4: Oh, well, hardly. And anyway, she'll grow younger as she
- 28:57Speaker 4: grows older.
- 28:58Speaker 2: What's the idea? I've noticed.
- 29:00Speaker 4: Well, it's a rather long story, Richard, and it is
- 29:02Speaker 4: a secret. We don't want anyone to know. We have
- 29:05Speaker 4: our reasons.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Okay.
- 29:07Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 29:09Speaker 2: She's a pretty wonderful kid, Abby. You ought to be
- 29:11Speaker 2: proud of her.
- 29:11Speaker 4: I am. Well, there's the dorm.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Wait a minute.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Hmm?
- 29:16Speaker 6: Come here.
- 29:19Speaker 4: You know, if I... I'll get into trouble if I
- 29:21Speaker 4: don't get in in time.
- 29:23Speaker 2: They'd only duck you from going to the sophomore cotillion. Oh?
- 29:26Speaker 2: Which mustn't happen, incidentally, because you're going with me. Am I? Listen, Abby.
- 29:32Speaker 4: Yes?
- 29:33Speaker 2: I'm washing it because that Mrs. Abbott thing scared the
- 29:35Speaker 2: daylights out of me. I like you. You know what
- 29:40Speaker 2: I mean? I really like you.
- 29:43Speaker 4: I like you, too.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Then you will come to the dance with me?
- 29:47Speaker 4: Well, is it customary? I mean, student and faculty, isn't
- 29:51Speaker 4: it a little.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Those barriers no longer exist.
- 29:54Speaker 4: They don't?
- 29:55Speaker 2: No. Well, how nice. I had to do that. I
- 30:02Speaker 2: had to kiss you. It's tradition. This tree we're under,
- 30:07Speaker 2: it's the kissing oak.
- 30:08Speaker 6: Oh, I see.
- 30:10Speaker 2: It's true. Any girl who doesn't kiss her beau goodnight
- 30:13Speaker 2: under this oak winds up an old maid.
- 30:16Speaker 4: Well, that could hardly be applied to me now, could it?
- 30:19Speaker 2: Uh, hardly. Goodnight, Richard. Goodnight, Abigail.
- 30:25Speaker 4: Oh, uh, by the way, Richard.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Yes?
- 30:28Speaker 7: They teach us in Botany that your kissing oak is
- 30:31Speaker 7: a willow.
- 30:33Speaker 4: Good night.
- 30:34Speaker 8: Oh, gosh, Mom, do you realize this is the first
- 30:44Speaker 8: time I've seen you alone in simply days?
- 30:46Speaker 4: Oh, Susie, I've missed you so. What have you been
- 30:48Speaker 4: doing with yourself, anyway?
- 30:50Speaker 5: Oh, nothing much. I just didn't want to get in
- 30:51Speaker 5: your hair.
- 30:52Speaker 4: Oh, honey, don't be silly.
- 30:54Speaker 5: Well, I mean, with Richard coaching you, I didn't want
- 30:56Speaker 5: to make you self-conscious. In the first place, you needed
- 30:59Speaker 5: lots of coaching.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Oh, that I did.
- 31:01Speaker 5: And in the second place, I wanted you to get
- 31:03Speaker 5: to know him without me around.
- 31:05Speaker 4: But why, dear?
- 31:06Speaker 5: Oh, come on, Mom. You haven't fooled me a bit.
- 31:09Speaker 5: Don't you see? I wanted you to find out by
- 31:11Speaker 5: yourself how wonderful he is and thoughtful and sweet. Well,
- 31:15Speaker 5: that's just what happened.
- 31:17Speaker 4: Susie, I don't understand.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Of course you do. You know now why I feel
- 31:21Speaker 5: the way I do. It's just the way I wanted
- 31:24Speaker 5: it to happen. Now you know why I'm in love
- 31:26Speaker 5: with him.
- 31:27Speaker 4: In love with him?
- 31:29Speaker 5: Oh, and wait till you really get to know him.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Oh, but Susie, he's not in love with you.
- 31:33Speaker 5: Well, he's very fond of me. It's just that he's
- 31:36Speaker 5: shy and conservative.
- 31:39Speaker 4: Oh, honey. Honey, are you sure? I mean, sometimes girls
- 31:43Speaker 4: imagine things, you know.
- 31:44Speaker 5: I was never sure of anything in my life. letting
- 31:47Speaker 5: me help him correct papers, picking me to work with
- 31:49Speaker 5: him shoulder to shoulder, just like the curies.
- 31:51Speaker 4: Susie, has he said any of these things to you?
- 31:55Speaker 4: Or are you just dreaming it all because you want
- 31:57Speaker 4: it to come true?
- 31:59Speaker 5: Well, he hasn't exactly said them, Mom, but he's changed
- 32:03Speaker 5: my whole outlook on life. Honestly, not some silly schoolgirl swoon. Oh, Susie.
- 32:11Speaker 4: Susie, I don't know what to say.
- 32:13Speaker 5: I'll say it. Thanks, Mom. Thanks for liking him.
- 32:17Speaker 9: Oh, Mom.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Yes?
- 32:18Speaker 4: I hate to.
- 32:19Speaker 5: Mention this, but... Well, you know how gossip spreads around
- 32:22Speaker 5: the campus.
- 32:23Speaker 4: Gossip?
- 32:24Speaker 5: Well, naturally, you've had to be with Richard a lot
- 32:26Speaker 5: since he's been coaching you, but... I'd be sort of
- 32:29Speaker 5: careful about seeing him. They'll be saying that you have
- 32:32Speaker 5: a crush on him next.
- 32:33Speaker 4: You understand? Yes, dear, I understand.
- 32:36Speaker 5: After all, you're only here temporarily. It isn't really your
- 32:40Speaker 5: life like it is mine.
- 32:42Speaker 4: Susie. Susie, I want to tell you something. I want
- 32:45Speaker 4: to explain something to you.
- 32:46Speaker 5: You don't have to explain a thing to me, Mom.
- 32:48Speaker 5: Not a thing.
- 32:49Speaker 4: You're swell.
- 32:49Speaker 5: Oh, I've got to dash.
- 32:50Speaker 4: See you later, darling. Oh, Susie.
- 32:51Speaker 8: It's all.
- 33:02Speaker 9: Right, Beulah.
- 33:02Speaker 2: I'll get it. Hello, darling.
- 33:05Speaker 4: Oh, darling. Darling, we've got to be awfully careful.
- 33:11Speaker 2: You mean I shouldn't kiss you like this? Abby, you're shivering.
- 33:15Speaker 2: I don't think it's from the cold. Come on inside.
- 33:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 33:20Speaker 4: Richard, everything has gone wrong.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Now, that is a ridiculously broad statement. Now, what do
- 33:24Speaker 2: you mean by everything? Us. So something is wrong with us? Yes. Now,
- 33:29Speaker 2: if you'll just spill the beans about the way I snore,
- 33:31Speaker 2: I'll fire her.
- 33:32Speaker 4: Don't joke, please.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Besides, I'm very kind to animals.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Please don't joke, Richard.
- 33:37Speaker 2: Sorry, Abby.
- 33:37Speaker 4: What is it? It's Susan.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Something happened to her? Yes.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Something incurable, I'm afraid. It seems that everybody at Poynter
- 33:45Speaker 4: knows about it except you. She's in love with you.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Oh, Abby. For a minute I thought it was something
- 33:52Speaker 2: really serious. You know, I had a puppy once, and
- 33:56Speaker 2: these kids remind me very much of him. Maybe that's
- 33:59Speaker 2: why they call it puppy love.
- 34:00Speaker 4: No. No, I don't think so, Richard. I did think
- 34:04Speaker 4: at first when she first hooked me.
- 34:05Speaker 7: No, I don't.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Oh, Abby, all these sprouts get crushes. It's like the measles.
- 34:10Speaker 2: They get over it. It doesn't mean anything. She's only 17.
- 34:13Speaker 4: Oh, darling, I was married when I was 16.
- 34:16Speaker 2: But it's not the same, Abby. You're a big girl now,
- 34:19Speaker 2: and I'm a big boy. We belong together, don't we?
- 34:21Speaker 4: Yes.
- 34:22Speaker 2: I want to marry you. You can't expect me to
- 34:24Speaker 2: take Susan's artist seriously. Abby, I love you.
- 34:27Speaker 4: I love you, too, darling.
- 34:28Speaker 2: I want you to be happy. I want to be happy.
- 34:29Speaker 4: I know.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Well, we've got a right to be happy together, haven't we?
- 34:32Speaker 4: Yes.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Then don't fight it. Let yourself go. Go along with it.
- 34:36Speaker 2: It's so simple. Now you give up this freshman.
- 34:39Speaker 6: Nonsense, huh?
- 34:40Speaker 4: No, I can't. Not yet. Not until February.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Abby, marriage makes me the breadwinner, remember? Yes. Now I'll
- 34:48Speaker 2: see that Susan stays in college. Then we tell her
- 34:50Speaker 2: and get married, huh?
- 34:52Speaker 4: We tell her. Yes. Tell her what, Richard? That her
- 34:57Speaker 4: mother's a rival, that you prefer me to her, and
- 34:59Speaker 4: anyway she's just a silly schoolgirl? I don't know.
- 35:02Speaker 7: Maybe I'm just being maternal, but I think that's pretty
- 35:05Speaker 7: hard to take. Oh, Richard, it isn't as simple as that.
- 35:08Speaker 7: That's not going to solve her problem. You see, to
- 35:11Speaker 7: her it isn't a crush.
- 35:12Speaker 2: It's real.
- 35:14Speaker 4: And being real is the most important thing in her life.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Yes, Abby, that's right. But you're the most important thing
- 35:20Speaker 2: in my life. We've got to give Susan a chance
- 35:22Speaker 2: to grow up. You can't treat her like a swaddling child.
- 35:26Speaker 2: You know, when she was a little girl, she got
- 35:28Speaker 2: a crush on her father, right?
- 35:30Speaker 4: Yes, that's right, she did. But then all little girls
- 35:31Speaker 4: do that. That doesn't mean anything.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Exactly. And sooner or later, it became a dead issue.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Susan matured. Now she picks on a prophet college because
- 35:40Speaker 2: he's the closest thing to her first love. And finally,
- 35:43Speaker 2: when that becomes a dead issue, she falls in love
- 35:45Speaker 2: with some muscle-bound Lothario, thinks he's creamy-dreamy, marries him and
- 35:50Speaker 2: starts raising little girls, who in turn will get a
- 35:52Speaker 2: crush on him. It's a pattern of life, Abby, and
- 35:55Speaker 2: you cannot protect Susan from it.
- 35:56Speaker 4: Oh, I don't suppose I can, Richard, but I... I've
- 36:00Speaker 4: just got to try.
- 36:01Speaker 2: You've already tried. Now give me a kiss and let's
- 36:04Speaker 2: forget all this nuts.
- 36:05Speaker 4: Oh, thank you. Oh, what a dress. For the Sartmore Cotillion, huh?
- 36:17Speaker 5: Well, naturally. Well? Well, what?
- 36:20Speaker 4: Well, who's taking you?
- 36:21Speaker 5: Oh, no. Not Professor Michaels.
- 36:25Speaker 4: Don't be childish.
- 36:26Speaker 5: Richard wouldn't be found dead at a student dance. I'm
- 36:29Speaker 5: going with Bo Jackson.
- 36:30Speaker 4: You know something? I'll bet if Dickie did go, he'd
- 36:33Speaker 4: take Abigail Fortitude. Abby?
- 36:37Speaker 5: She wouldn't go to the dance either. It'd just be
- 36:39Speaker 5: kid stuff to her.
- 36:40Speaker 4: Besides, she hasn't got anyone to take her.
- 36:42Speaker 5: Oh, I don't know about that.
- 36:44Speaker 4: Oh, you mean she is going? Well, who with?
- 36:47Speaker 5: Well, how do I know? Excuse me, Louise. I just
- 36:50Speaker 5: remembered I have a very important phone call to make.
- 36:53Speaker 6: Yes, this is John Heaslip. Who'd you say this is?
- 36:56Speaker 4: Susan.
- 36:57Speaker 10: Susan Abbott.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Well, for goodness sake, Susan, how are you?
- 37:00Speaker 6: How's your mother?
- 37:01Speaker 4: Oh, fine.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Just fine.
- 37:03Speaker 6: Well, isn't that just fine? I've got some very good
- 37:06Speaker 6: news for her.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Very good.
- 37:07Speaker 6: In fact, I was about to run up there and
- 37:09Speaker 6: see her about it.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Oh, Mr.
- 37:10Speaker 10: Heaslip, could you? That's why I'm calling. You see, we're
- 37:13Speaker 10: having a big dance up here, and Mother, well, she's
- 37:17Speaker 10: all alone, and she misses you so much.
- 37:19Speaker 2: She does? Well, isn't that fine?
- 37:23Speaker 6: I miss her, too.
- 37:24Speaker 10: We were thinking maybe you could take her to the
- 37:26Speaker 10: dance like you were her dreamboat. Her escort, I mean.
- 37:30Speaker 6: Why, I'd be delighted, Susan. When is it?
- 37:33Speaker 10: Tomorrow night.
- 37:33Speaker 6: I'll wire Abigail immediately.
- 37:35Speaker 9: Oh, no, no.
- 37:36Speaker 10: Let's keep it a surprise. You see, nobody knows about us, Mr.
- 37:39Speaker 3: Heathlip.
- 37:40Speaker 10: About Abby and me, that is.
- 37:41Speaker 6: Well, thank heavens we'll be done with all that nonsense
- 37:43Speaker 6: when I get there. I'll see you tomorrow night, Susan.
- 37:46Speaker 9: Goodbye.
- 37:55Speaker 4: Well, aren't you coming, Abby? Professor Michaels just dismissed us.
- 37:58Speaker 5: Or didn't you notice?
- 37:59Speaker 4: Well, there's something I have to ask him. Excuse me, Louise.
- 38:02Speaker 4: It's getting to be a habit, isn't it?
- 38:04Speaker 2: Richard?
- 38:06Speaker 4: I just want to tell you I can't go to
- 38:08Speaker 4: the dance with you tonight.
- 38:09Speaker 2: What do you mean you can't? What are you, a
- 38:11Speaker 2: woman or a mouse? Oh, I'm a mother.
- 38:15Speaker 4: And I just can't hurt Susan, darling. I just can't.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Well, what do you want me to do? Marry her
- 38:19Speaker 2: for Pete's sake?
- 38:20Speaker 4: Oh, no, of course not. But you don't understand.
- 38:23Speaker 2: She's got a date, hasn't she?
- 38:24Speaker 4: Yes, I told you, but.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Now, I'm telling you, you'll be ready by 8 o'clock
- 38:27Speaker 2: or so. Help me, Hannah. There'll be a scandal in
- 38:29Speaker 2: that dorm when I come up after you. And what
- 38:31Speaker 2: do you want? Oh, me?
- 38:33Speaker 6: Well, I just wanted.
- 38:34Speaker 4: Excuse me, please.
- 38:36Speaker 6: Hey, she sure left in a hurry, Professor.
- 38:38Speaker 2: One wisecrack out of you, Buster, and there'll be a
- 38:40Speaker 2: permanent vacancy at left tackle all season. Uh, uh, yes, yes, sir.
- 38:50Speaker 4: Good evening. May I help you?
- 38:52Speaker 6: I'm John Heaslip. This is the Freshman Dormitory.
- 38:55Speaker 2: For women?
- 38:56Speaker 6: Naturally.
- 38:58Speaker 2: I'm calling for Mrs.
- 38:59Speaker 6: uh, for Miss Abigail Fortitude.
- 39:01Speaker 4: I'll tell her you're here.
- 39:02Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Abigail, Mrs. Gray in the lobby. Your date is here.
- 39:10Speaker 6: Yes, I'll tell him. Have a chair, Mr.
- 39:13Speaker 4: Hyslop. She'll be right down.
- 39:14Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 39:15Speaker 4: Oh, hello, Professor.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Good evening, Mrs. Gray. Would you tell Miss Fortitude I'm here, please?
- 39:21Speaker 9: Oh, well, yes.
- 39:23Speaker 4: Yes, have a seat, Professor. Mrs. Gray. again. I think
- 39:31Speaker 4: you'd better come right down, Abby. It's getting a little crowded.
- 39:45Speaker 2: We pause now for station identification.
- 39:48Speaker 1: This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 40:10Speaker 3: In a moment, we'll bring you Act Three of Mother
- 40:12Speaker 3: is a Freshman.
- 40:13Speaker 6: Here's your producer, Mr.
- 40:15Speaker 2: William Keeley.
- 40:16Speaker 3: The curtain rises on the third act of Mother is
- 40:19Speaker 3: a Freshman, starring Loretta Young as Abigail and Van Johnson
- 40:23Speaker 3: as Richard. Well, it's a moment later, and in the
- 40:31Speaker 3: lobby of the Freshman Women's Dormitory, two gentlemen, both waiting
- 40:36Speaker 3: for Abigail's fortitude, happen to look at each other.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Visiting your daughter, sir?
- 40:45Speaker 6: Not exactly. I'm here to... Johnny.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Johnny Heasley.
- 40:50Speaker 6: Richard Michaels.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Well, how do you like that? I don't think I've
- 40:52Speaker 2: seen you since we left Yale. Twelve years ago.
- 40:55Speaker 6: Did you carry out your threat to become a professor?
- 40:57Speaker 2: Oh, yes. I'm teaching right here at Poynter.
- 40:59Speaker 6: No.
- 41:00Speaker 2: What about you? Law?
- 41:01Speaker 6: Oh, definitely, yes.
- 41:03Speaker 2: You know, for a while there, it looked like you
- 41:05Speaker 2: were going to be a crooner instead of a lawyer.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Me?
- 41:08Speaker 4: Yes.
- 41:09Speaker 2: A crooner? Well, you remember the night you climbed up
- 41:12Speaker 2: in the bandstand and sang Bula Bula through a megaphone?
- 41:16Speaker 6: They, uh, they did seem to like it, didn't they?
- 41:21Speaker 2: Boy, were you lousy.
- 41:24Speaker 4: Why, uh, why, why, John?
- 41:25Speaker 5: Abby.
- 41:26Speaker 4: Oh, hello, Richard. But, but, John, for heaven's sake, what
- 41:30Speaker 4: were you.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Abby, you look beautiful.
- 41:32Speaker 4: Oh, well, thank you, Richard. John, what are you doing here?
- 41:36Speaker 6: Well, didn't Susan tell you?
- 41:37Speaker 5: No.
- 41:38Speaker 6: Oh, that's right, I forgot.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Surprise.
- 41:40Speaker 4: For me?
- 41:40Speaker 2: Of course.
- 41:42Speaker 4: Oh, well, I'm so sorry. I had no idea that you.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Excuse me, but do you two know each other?
- 41:47Speaker 4: Yes.
- 41:48Speaker 2: Obviously. Yes.
- 41:50Speaker 6: Do you two know each other?
- 41:52Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Yes, we were classmates at Yale.
- 41:56Speaker 10: Oh.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Well, it's been nice seeing you, John. If you're going
- 41:59Speaker 2: to stay in town, be sure to drop in and
- 42:00Speaker 2: see me.
- 42:01Speaker 6: Thank you, Richard. Good night.
- 42:02Speaker 9: Good night.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Shall we go, Abby?
- 42:04Speaker 4: Well, I.
- 42:05Speaker 6: I beg your pardon.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Well, this is my date, Johnny.
- 42:08Speaker 4: Oh.
- 42:09Speaker 6: He always was a joker.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Oh? No, Richard.
- 42:12Speaker 6: Abigail is my date.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Are you kidding?
- 42:14Speaker 10: No.
- 42:16Speaker 9: Are you?
- 42:17Speaker 2: Tell him, Abby. Tell him.
- 42:18Speaker 4: Well, I.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Oh, come on.
- 42:20Speaker 4: Both of you. All right, though.
- 42:29Speaker 5: Now, what's the idea?
- 42:31Speaker 9: I've got to talk to you, Susie.
- 42:32Speaker 5: Well, you can talk to me on the dance floor,
- 42:34Speaker 5: can't you? If you think I can stand out here
- 42:36Speaker 5: all night.
- 42:37Speaker 9: Now, look, Sue. Gee, I'm in love with you. Every
- 42:40Speaker 9: time I think of losing you, my heart gets like
- 42:43Speaker 9: a hamburger.
- 42:44Speaker 5: Oh, you. Can't you be a man?
- 42:48Speaker 9: A man? Oh, you want a man, huh? Okay, baby,
- 42:53Speaker 9: you got one.
- 42:55Speaker 6: Oh, hi, Bo.
- 42:56Speaker 9: Yeah, and I'll kiss you again, understand? Anytime I want to.
- 42:59Speaker 9: And as for Professor Michaels, I.
- 43:01Speaker 4: Susie, where are you?
- 43:02Speaker 9: She's right where she belongs with me.
- 43:03Speaker 6: Oh, hi, Bo.
- 43:04Speaker 5: Susie, I thought you said Professor Michaels wouldn't be found
- 43:08Speaker 5: dead at a student dance.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Well?
- 43:10Speaker 4: Well, come in and take a look. He looks mighty
- 43:13Speaker 4: spry for a corpse. Do you.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Believe this is our dance, Abby?
- 43:19Speaker 4: Oh, thank you, Richard.
- 43:20Speaker 6: Pardon me, Richard, but it happens to be my dance.
- 43:22Speaker 2: I beg your pardon, gentlemen. As a matter of fact,
- 43:24Speaker 2: it's my dance.
- 43:25Speaker 4: Oh, Dean Gillihan. Thank you very much.
- 43:27Speaker 5: Professor Michaels.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Hello, Susan.
- 43:30Speaker 6: Hello, Mr.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Heaslip.
- 43:31Speaker 6: Good evening, Susan.
- 43:32Speaker 5: Oh, I'm so glad you came.
- 43:34Speaker 6: There are others who do not share your enthusiasm.
- 43:37Speaker 4: Oh, what do you mean?
- 43:38Speaker 6: I mean your mother already had a date with this gentleman.
- 43:41Speaker 5: Oh, she couldn't have.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Oh, excuse me. But don't worry, John. I'll be back. Well, Abby, confusing,
- 43:50Speaker 2: isn't it?
- 43:50Speaker 4: Oh, yes, yes, a little.
- 43:51Speaker 6: Like dog patch on Sadie Hawkins' day.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Indeed. Oh, it's you. Thank you, my dear.
- 43:58Speaker 4: You're welcome.
- 43:59Speaker 2: All right, darling. Now, just what has Johnny Heaslip got
- 44:01Speaker 2: to do with you?
- 44:02Speaker 4: Oh, he's the family lawyer. Old faithful.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Is that why you tried to break our date?
- 44:07Speaker 4: Why, Richard, I didn't even know he was coming.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Is he in love with you?
- 44:12Speaker 4: Yes, madly. Why, are you jealous?
- 44:14Speaker 2: You bet I am. And if that guy tries anything romantic... Sorry, Michaels,
- 44:17Speaker 2: I'm cutting in. Okay, okay. You don't have to hold
- 44:21Speaker 2: us so close, do you?
- 44:24Speaker 6: Really, Abby, you ought to be ashamed.
- 44:26Speaker 4: Why?
- 44:27Speaker 6: Leading the poor fellow on. He's ruining for you right
- 44:31Speaker 6: here in public.
- 44:31Speaker 4: Do you think so, John?
- 44:32Speaker 2: It's absurd.
- 44:34Speaker 6: You can't put aside your life like this and pretend
- 44:36Speaker 6: to be a college girl. Anyway, the farce is over.
- 44:39Speaker 6: I have some money for you.
- 44:40Speaker 4: Oh, now, John, I told you before that I.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Oh, I'm not lending you money.
- 44:43Speaker 6: You sold some stock. You have $ 5, 000 to your credit.
- 44:46Speaker 2: But I... Cut. Oh, hello, Bo.
- 44:50Speaker 4: See you later, John.
- 44:51Speaker 2: Abby, no, wait.
- 44:52Speaker 9: Well, Fortitude, I only cut in because I want to
- 44:54Speaker 9: warn you.
- 44:55Speaker 4: What about, though?
- 44:56Speaker 9: Well, it's about Susan Abbott. Gee, she's been blowing her
- 44:58Speaker 9: top ever since you and.
- 44:59Speaker 2: The professor arrived. She's pretty sore at you. Oh.
- 45:02Speaker 4: Thank you, Bo. Come on, we'd better find her. Susan. Susan, dear,
- 45:11Speaker 4: I want to speak to you.
- 45:12Speaker 10: Mother.
- 45:13Speaker 5: Oh, how quick.
- 45:14Speaker 4: How quick. Mother? Is she nuts? Did you hear what
- 45:18Speaker 4: she called you? Her mother. Yes, Bo, that's right. You?
- 45:22Speaker 9: Holy smoke. Pardon me.
- 45:24Speaker 6: Oh, sure.
- 45:25Speaker 2: Her mother. Well, what gay little piece of news did Mr.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Heaslip have to tell you this time?
- 45:30Speaker 4: Well, he said there's no need for my staying at
- 45:33Speaker 4: Poynter any longer, that I have money now. He wants
- 45:36Speaker 4: me to go home, Richard. Home? Yes.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Home to what? Home to him? He's crazy. Listen, Abby,
- 45:41Speaker 2: you're going to be a professor's wife. This is your
- 45:43Speaker 2: life now. It becomes yours. Oh, Richard.
- 45:48Speaker 4: I really have a headache this time. Do you mind
- 45:51Speaker 4: if we leave, Richard?
- 45:51Speaker 2: Yes. Going somewhere?
- 45:53Speaker 6: Good, I'll come along.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Be sure to let us know when I drop you off,
- 45:56Speaker 2: old man.
- 46:03Speaker 6: And you can come with me right to the station, Abby.
- 46:05Speaker 6: There's a train at 12.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Heaslip, your train's way off the track. Abby is not
- 46:08Speaker 2: leaving here.
- 46:09Speaker 4: Oh, no?
- 46:10Speaker 2: No, we're going to be married. And if I hear
- 46:12Speaker 2: any more talk about leaving in trains, a block is
- 46:14Speaker 2: going to be knocked off.
- 46:15Speaker 6: You don't say?
- 46:16Speaker 4: Yes.
- 46:16Speaker 6: May I remind you, Michaels, that during our undergraduate days,
- 46:19Speaker 6: I was intercollegiate middleweight champion.
- 46:21Speaker 4: Oh, stop it. Both of you.
- 46:23Speaker 2: You heard her, Heaslip. Here's the dormitory, darling. Abby?
- 46:26Speaker 6: I shall be waiting at the inn. Phone me when
- 46:28Speaker 6: you're ready.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Good night, John. You'll wait a long time, Heaslip. Good night, Abby.
- 46:31Speaker 2: I'll see you in class tomorrow.
- 46:32Speaker 4: Good night, Richard.
- 46:33Speaker 6: Good night, sir.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and if you hadn't been middleweight boxing champion, I'd
- 46:38Speaker 2: knock your block off.
- 46:46Speaker 5: Susan?
- 46:47Speaker 2: Is that you?
- 46:48Speaker 5: Professor Michaels?
- 46:49Speaker 2: That's the kissing oak, Susan. That's no place for tears.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Why aren't you in there dancing?
- 46:55Speaker 5: I just went in to see Mother.
- 46:57Speaker 2: She's all right, isn't she?
- 46:58Speaker 4: She's leaving.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Leaving? Well, then we've got to stop her.
- 47:02Speaker 5: No.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Susan, please help me. You love her, don't you? Well,
- 47:07Speaker 2: I love her even more. Don't you realize what she's
- 47:09Speaker 2: meant to my life? I'd have wound up a broken-down bachelor.
- 47:13Speaker 2: But Abby's changed all that. She's given me a chance
- 47:15Speaker 2: to live, and it's got to be. For her sake, too.
- 47:18Speaker 4: No, that's not so.
- 47:20Speaker 2: For years now, you've been her life. But you're grown
- 47:22Speaker 2: up now, Susan. Now, help me, won't you?
- 47:24Speaker 5: Why should I? I am all grown up, and I'm
- 47:27Speaker 5: in love with you. Don't you see that?
- 47:30Speaker 2: I don't think you even know the meaning of the word.
- 47:33Speaker 5: I do love you. Why should I give you up?
- 47:36Speaker 2: Your mother loves me, too, and she's giving me up.
- 47:40Speaker 2: You see, Susan, that's the difference between a woman and
- 47:42Speaker 2: a child.
- 47:43Speaker 5: Oh, leave me alone. Please, leave me alone.
- 47:48Speaker 8: Oh!
- 47:55Speaker 6: Your taxi cab's here, Abigail.
- 47:56Speaker 4: Thank you, Mrs. Gray. I certainly don't understand your leaving
- 47:59Speaker 4: us like this. Oh, well, don't be alarmed. I'll phone
- 48:02Speaker 4: Dean Gillingham tomorrow and explain everything.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Abby, you can't go. You mustn't.
- 48:11Speaker 4: Please, please, Richard, it's no use. Really, it isn't.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Abby, listen. Remember Mr. Shakespeare. Oh, don't. Remember that sonnet
- 48:16Speaker 2: we worked on. Presume not on thy heart when mine
- 48:19Speaker 2: is slain. Thou gavest me thine not to give back again.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Oh, don't. Please don't, Richard.
- 48:24Speaker 5: It's all so... Mother, I was wrong. Don't leave us.
- 48:28Speaker 5: Don't go away.
- 48:29Speaker 4: Oh, Susie. Susie, do you mean that?
- 48:33Speaker 5: Well, if I can't have him, at least let's keep
- 48:35Speaker 5: him in the family.
- 48:36Speaker 4: Oh, Susie.
- 48:39Speaker 5: And don't worry about me, Mother.
- 48:40Speaker 10: I'm all right.
- 48:41Speaker 6: I'm fine.
- 48:41Speaker 4: Darling, wait a minute.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Let her go, Abby. That's the way she wants it.
- 48:45Speaker 4: Oh, I guess so.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Well, Abby, she grew up tonight. Yes.
- 48:50Speaker 3: Hey, lady, you'd better hurry if you want to catch
- 48:52Speaker 3: that train.
- 48:54Speaker 4: Train? Oh, my goodness, John Heaslip.
- 48:56Speaker 2: At the station?
- 48:57Speaker 8: Yes.
- 48:57Speaker 2: Come on, we'll wave goodbye to him.
- 48:59Speaker 4: All right.
- 49:00Speaker 9: Hey, for Pete's sake, Susie, where you been?
- 49:06Speaker 5: Hello, Bo.
- 49:07Speaker 9: I've been going screwy trying to find you. Gee, you
- 49:11Speaker 9: look beautiful, Susie.
- 49:13Speaker 5: Thank you, Bo.
- 49:14Speaker 9: Where have you been? The last dance is just starting.
- 49:16Speaker 5: Then I guess we'd better dance it.
- 49:19Speaker 2: Gosh, Susie.
- 49:20Speaker 5: But aren't you overlooking something?
- 49:23Speaker 8: Huh?
- 49:25Speaker 5: We're standing under the kissing oak.
- 49:27Speaker 4: Susie? Holy smoke, what's happened tonight?
- 49:36Speaker 6: Very well, Abby, but I still insist you're making the
- 49:38Speaker 6: mistake of your life.
- 49:39Speaker 4: Oh, really, John?
- 49:40Speaker 2: Think.
- 49:41Speaker 6: Think before you take this step, which you will regret
- 49:43Speaker 6: as long as you live.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Well, I try.
- 49:44Speaker 6: I furthermore.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Sender a letter. He's let your train of starting. Yes,
- 49:48Speaker 2: but Abby. Think, Abby.
- 49:50Speaker 6: Think.
- 49:50Speaker 4: Goodbye, John.
- 49:51Speaker 5: Goodbye.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Abby, dear. Yes, darling. I'm not going to tell you...
- 49:56Speaker 2: I'm not going to tell you the deep, dark chapters
- 49:58Speaker 2: in my life, but there's one thing about me I'm
- 50:00Speaker 2: afraid you really should know about.
- 50:02Speaker 3: What?
- 50:03Speaker 2: You remember that book, The Gravedigger and the Chambermaid? Yes. Well,
- 50:07Speaker 2: who wrote it?
- 50:08Speaker 4: Uh, John St. John, wasn't it?
- 50:10Speaker 2: Abby, I am John St.
- 50:12Speaker 5: John.
- 50:13Speaker 8: No!
- 50:14Speaker 2: Yes, I wrote it.
- 50:15Speaker 5: Oh, Richard!
- 50:17Speaker 4: Well, I have a confession to make to you, too.
- 50:19Speaker 7: What?
- 50:20Speaker 5: I read it.
- 50:21Speaker 8: Oh, no!
- 50:22Speaker 4: Twice!
- 50:22Speaker 2: No!
- 50:37Speaker 3: Tonight's stars made this anniversary a joyous occasion, and here
- 50:42Speaker 3: they are again, Loretta Young and Van Johnson. Congratulations to
- 50:46Speaker 3: you both on a wonderful performance.
- 50:48Speaker 4: Thank you, Bill.
- 50:49Speaker 7: And we'd like to wish you many happy returns on
- 50:51Speaker 7: the 15th birthday of the Lux Radio Theater.
- 50:54Speaker 2: The same for me, Bill. You've made a splendid record. Well, thanks.
- 50:57Speaker 3: And speaking of records, Loretta holds one that we're very
- 51:01Speaker 3: proud of.
- 51:02Speaker 2: I'll bet she's the loveliest freshman ever to appear in
- 51:04Speaker 2: the Lux Radio Theater. You're right, Van. But I had
- 51:07Speaker 2: another record in mind.
- 51:09Speaker 3: This is Loretta's 22nd appearance here.
- 51:12Speaker 2: And every one a hit.
- 51:13Speaker 4: Oh, thank you, Bill. And after.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Thank you, Bill.
- 51:19Speaker 7: After 22 appearances here, I can still say the thing
- 51:22Speaker 7: about Lux soap that I said at my first appearance.
- 51:25Speaker 4: It's my favorite complexion care.
- 51:27Speaker 2: Thank you, Loretta.
- 51:29Speaker 3: Then we've heard some wonderful reports about your new Metro-Golden-Mare picture, Battleground,
- 51:34Speaker 3: the story of the Battle of the Bulge.
- 51:36Speaker 2: It was the most interesting part I've had in a
- 51:38Speaker 2: long time, Bill.
- 51:39Speaker 3: And it's rather fitting that it should have its premiere
- 51:41Speaker 3: in the National Capitol on Armistice Day.
- 51:43Speaker 2: Yes, I hope to be there. Bill, I was very
- 51:46Speaker 2: much interested in what John Kennedy said a few minutes
- 51:48Speaker 2: ago about your contest to pick the most beautiful luxe girl.
- 51:51Speaker 7: You mean the most beautiful 15-year-old luxe girl van in
- 51:54Speaker 7: honor of this 15th anniversary?
- 51:55Speaker 4: I saw the local winners in the paper today.
- 51:57Speaker 2: That's right, Loretta.
- 51:58Speaker 3: Six girls born in 1934 have been selected in each
- 52:01Speaker 3: of the 163 local contests. Papers all over the country
- 52:07Speaker 3: today carried photographs of the six lucky girls.
- 52:10Speaker 2: In their CBS station area. So everybody can pick the
- 52:13Speaker 2: girl they want.
- 52:14Speaker 5: To vote for.
- 52:14Speaker 4: And the voting starts today, Bill?
- 52:16Speaker 3: Yes, and I want to remind everybody to remember just
- 52:19Speaker 3: one simple rule. Send in your votes on Lux Toilet
- 52:23Speaker 3: Soap wrappers. Then the girl getting the most votes will
- 52:26Speaker 3: represent her station in the big national contest.
- 52:29Speaker 4: Well, you see, it's easy to vote then. You want
- 52:32Speaker 4: me to give you a luxe soap wrapper?
- 52:34Speaker 2: Certainly not. I've got plenty of them at my house.
- 52:38Speaker 2: What's the show next week, Bill?
- 52:39Speaker 3: It's a romantic drama with a most intriguing title, Van.
- 52:43Speaker 3: The 20th century Fox film.
- 52:45Speaker 2: Scudahoo, Scudahay.
- 52:47Speaker 3: And we'll have the original stars of the picture, June
- 52:50Speaker 3: Haver and Lon McAllister. Scudahoo Scudahay is a wholesome story
- 52:56Speaker 3: for the entire family, and you're all invited to join
- 52:59Speaker 3: us next Monday.
- 53:00Speaker 4: Well, we'll all be listening to you start your 16th year, Bill.
