- 2:50show. A little bit later on Tim Head is whether us he is the
- 2:52executive director of the Faith and Freedom Coalition of North Carolina. Now, why
- 2:55would he be on a show in West Virginia. Well, he was actually
- 2:59reckoned men did by the West Virginia Chapter of Faith and Freedom Coalition and some
- 3:06of their members. I understand, mister had they went to Israel, and
- 3:10of course we all know, we've all seen the pictures, we all read
- 3:14what's going on in Israel. Well they saw it a first hand account.
- 3:15So we're going to talk to him about that coming up a little bit later
- 3:19on, plus more on the gas crisis on the West Side. Want to
- 3:22welcome into the show though this morning to talk a little education this morning.
- 3:27State Senator Amy Nicole Grady, Senator, Good morning, how are you?
- 3:30Good morning, Dave. I'm doing great. How are you today? I
- 3:31am fine? Thank you for being here. And I invited you, Senator
- 3:36on the show after a report that I actually saw in a local television news
- 3:38station here in the valley last week and had to do with something called the
- 3:42Underwood Grants. Now, you and some others are concerned about a lack of
- 3:46funding for these grants, and I guess a good place to start would be
- 3:49asking you what are the Underwood Grants and what's up with the lack of funding.
- 3:53Well, they're actually a scholarship scholarship. Yeah, the Underwood Smith is
- 3:57a teaching scholarship and it's awarded to high school students who are going into the
- 4:02education field and it can pay for ten thousand dollars per year for them and
- 4:08in return, they agree to teach in West Virginia for a minimum of five
- 4:13years and if they leave West Virginia, of course, then they have to
- 4:16pay it back so within that timeframe. So it's really important in making sure
- 4:21that our young people that want to go into education, number one, stay
- 4:25in West Virginia and teach because we need teachers, but just the way to
- 4:28support them as well. And when it was funded originally it was it was
- 4:32basically funded out of the surplus and it was it was not put in the
- 4:38budget to be recurring. So I talked with a chancellor and I know she
- 4:42has requested with the Governor's office that we put in the governor's budget right now
- 4:46that they're working on right now. So and then we're going to have some
- 4:48talks in the Senate about it as well in the House and hopefully we can
- 4:51get something figured out. Well, it's important, Well, of course it
- 4:55is. And you probably better than anybody know this because you are a teacher
- 4:58and it's been well well documented in the past. So hopefully this can get
- 5:00taken care of, because it's very important not only to get teachers in classrooms
- 5:04but also to get them to stay in the classrooms as well. And certainly
- 5:08got a lot. You've got a lot against you. Yeah, So,
- 5:11I mean we have the people that have been the students have been awarded the
- 5:14scholarship that are in college right now. You know, they still have that
- 5:17that's still available to them. The only thing that the funding is not available
- 5:20for new applicants. Okay, so the high school seniors this year that applied
- 5:25for it were really surprised when they got an email back saying I'm sorry,
- 5:29there's no funding available and I'll figure you what. Dave, I was also
- 5:31surprised. I didn't realize or I didn't learn about that until about a month
- 5:35ago. I had a teacher from a local high school that I know used
- 5:41to be my neighbor, and he texted me and said, Hey, I'm
- 5:43trying to help some students fill out some applications for scholarships, and we're being
- 5:46told that there's no funding for the Smith under the Underwood Smith Scholarship, and
- 5:49I said, oh, well, let me check on that, and that
- 5:53started the ball rolling. So hopefully we can make sure that this doesn't happen
- 5:58again. Yeah, and I think it's worth pointing out, as you said,
- 6:00Senator Grady, that this doesn't affect the the students. This is moving
- 6:05forward. This is making sure that the continued, that these scholarships can continue
- 6:10to be found out. We can get those in the budget. Centator,
- 6:12I heard a clip from the head of the state school Board, Paul Hardesty,
- 6:15calling for what he called more local school board accountability. What was he
- 6:23referencing and what is your response to that? You know, this fall,
- 6:26we've had we've had several meetings together, that's myself and some of the Senate
- 6:30leadership, with Superintendent Black and President Paul Hardesty about some things that we can
- 6:35do to help improve, you know, things that we can do to be
- 6:38supportive of the department. Just just a lot of good educational talks. And
- 6:43we've talked a lot about local board, local boards, local school boards.
- 6:46And when I say this, I don't mean every single one, you know,
- 6:49because we have some school boards that do wonderful things. We have some
- 6:54school boards that you know, clearly aren't doing what they're supposed to do.
- 6:57So we're trying to see how without taking away local control, we can,
- 7:01though make certain that they know that they're held accountable for things. Let's talk
- 7:04about specifically. We've been talking about performance, okay, so that you know,
- 7:11whenever it's academic performance. Sometimes I think we get things get lost in
- 7:15the shuffle and we forget that that's what our school boards are there for,
- 7:17you know. And people a lot of times focus a lot on finances and
- 7:20things like that. That's important too, but maybe make some clear lines of
- 7:24detail on what the superintendent of the local county is responsible for and what the
- 7:30boards are responsible for, because sometimes they'll hire a superintendent who wants to come
- 7:33in and make a lot of positive changes academically and they don't get any support
- 7:38from their board, you know. And so we just we're just exploring a
- 7:42lot of that and what we want to do to make sure that we are
- 7:45saying, hey, we expect good results. We know we can have good
- 7:47results, but at the local level, you need to expect it to Talking
- 7:51again with State Senator Aimed Nicole Grady, Dave Allen Show in five eighty Live
- 7:55is brought to you part by Hustan's Pizza. Well this month that your local
- 7:58Hustands you can get a large at and edge pepper only pizza and ten cheese
- 8:01takes only twenty one ninety nine. Visitt Husband's Pizza dot com for details.
- 8:05Senator, you are on Hoppy yesterday talking about a trip that I think it's
- 8:09you and the state school superintendent mister Blatt are going to be making to Denver
- 8:13next week. Talk again about that we are it's a Superintendent Blatt and I
- 8:16and also Jackson County Superintendent will Hostafluke, are going to be going to Denver
- 8:22to a conference with the Education Commission of the States to present it's a spotlight
- 8:26on must Virginia. So we're going to present the third Grade Success Act,
- 8:31how we are implementing it, the positives we're going to see from it to
- 8:35people from all over the country. And I think it's exciting because this is
- 8:39a spotlight on must Virginia. That's something positive about education. You know,
- 8:43how many times do we always hear the negatives about we're forty eighth or we're
- 8:48forty ninth, You know, or we're doing this, We're we always hear
- 8:50negative things. So to be contacted from an organization that works across the nation
- 8:56and recognize that this is transformational and for us to present it to other places
- 9:01is I think is really exciting. You're somebody, as I said, Sender,
- 9:05you know obviously you you were in the classroom when you're not under the
- 9:09gold Dome. How are we doing education wise in in West Virginia? Because,
- 9:15as you said, any time you hear about West Virginia, especially on
- 9:16the national front, you hear about West Virginia in the news as it comes
- 9:20to public education, it's usually not very positive. Unfortunately, it's been that
- 9:24way for some time. How are how are we doing overall? And are
- 9:28we are we? Are we doing any better? Well, I'm seeing a
- 9:31good I'm seeing a positive shift in attitudes from teachers. And I'll just say
- 9:35this because when when we were working on that their Great Success Act last year,
- 9:39that was a lot a lot I got a lot of questions about,
- 9:41well, how do you think teachers are going to take this because it is
- 9:43a lot of new training and it's a lot more rigorous, And I said,
- 9:46well, I think they'll be excited because they know how positive it can
- 9:50be. And the department held some conferences this summer to kind of introduce that
- 9:54and try to get everybody, you know, going on the science of rena
- 9:58reading and things like that, and the the enthusiasm was there, Dave,
- 10:01and it was really exciting to see because it takes sometimes it's easy to get
- 10:07monotonous things to get monotonous, but and when you introduce something that's a little
- 10:09bit more work or harder work, it's easy for people to shut down.
- 10:13But I've seen excitement. And I think there's a lot more focus on small
- 10:16group which makes a huge difference. And I think people are starting to realize
- 10:20that having a smaller ratio of student teacher is really important. So I think,
- 10:26you know, I think we're going to start trending up, which I
- 10:28said this last year when we passed that their Great Success Act, I said,
- 10:31you know, and we're going to see a difference in five to seven
- 10:33years. So it's not going to happen overnight. But in five to seven
- 10:35years, you ask me again, Okay, well, let's see. Well,
- 10:39as we always say about any problem, you didn't get into this overnight,
- 10:41you're not going to get out of it overnight, you know, no
- 10:43matter about what the issue is. And you know, I was listening,
- 10:46as I said, to your interview with Hoppy yesterday, Senator, and I
- 10:48thought you did a great job on the interview, but you kind of outline
- 10:52some things that teachers face in the classroom on a daily basis. And you
- 10:56know, I'm a kid of the nineteen seventies and and people will say,
- 11:00well, the biggest problems are talking in class, and the biggest problems are
- 11:05chewing gum or running in the halls or whatever, you know, whatever,
- 11:07the mini school things that we got in trouble for the nineteen seventies and eighties.
- 11:15I don't think sometimes people maybe of my age and older, realize what
- 11:20it's like to be a public school teacher, not only in West Virginia,
- 11:24but in other places. In the year twenty twenty three heading into twenty twenty
- 11:28four, talk about that just a little bit, some of the things that
- 11:31you and others face on a regular basis. I think that's an accurate statement.
- 11:35You know, boy, I wish those are the only things we had
- 11:37to worry about now, you know, now we have we have students that
- 11:41are coming into our classrooms with a lot of trauma, which I completely understand.
- 11:43You know, they come from situations that we probably couldn't even fathom that
- 11:48they go through, and so they come with all these all this trauma.
- 11:52They can't they don't know how to handle their emotions and they've never or they've
- 11:54never been taught how to. And I'm talking making threats against teachers. I
- 12:00mean as easy as you know, I'll kill you. I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 12:01punch you in the face, throwing materials and throwing chromebooks and things across the
- 12:07room. It is very violent behavior that we would have never seen back when
- 12:13you or I either one with school. And that's what's driving teachers away from
- 12:16education. It's not it is not the pay. God. You know,
- 12:20there might be a few people out here that say, oh, yes,
- 12:22I'm going to leave for the pay, but let's be honest, it's not
- 12:24that. It is the fact that we're expected to deal with these behaviors and
- 12:28we basically don't feel like we have much support. And when I say that,
- 12:33I don't mean there's not people supporting it, but it seems like everybody
- 12:35wants to focus on how do we help the student fantastic. We're supposed to
- 12:39help them all, you know, but we can't. We can't always love
- 12:43them enough that it'll change the behavior. At some point, we have to
- 12:46look at the class as a whole and say, well, what is this
- 12:50behavior and how is it affecting the other students in the classroom, you know,
- 12:54and it's having a negative effect on them, so that it's just a
- 12:56huge it's a huge deal. Are working on some legislation that hopefully will help
- 13:01with some behavioral supports. Definitely not punishing, you know, kids for things
- 13:07they've been through, but we also have to look at it and say,
- 13:09what about the kids that come to school and that's their safe space? You
- 13:13know, school for some kids is their safe space and this is taking that
- 13:16away from them. That's not fair to them. Yeah, I mean it
- 13:18is. And again just to show you how far it's gone, there are
- 13:22many I can't imagine maybe when I was growing up, that there would be
- 13:24a whole lot of kids would say I can't wait to get back to school,
- 13:28you know, because they wanted to be home with their family and friends
- 13:31and whatever. And sadly there are kids now in our school system again,
- 13:35not just here, but across the country that they want to get back to
- 13:37school because it's the only place they get fed, and it's place they had
- 13:41that safe space, as you said, Yeah, yeah, and so they
- 13:43come to they want to come to school. And then you know, if
- 13:46you have a student without burst like this to make them feel unsafe, you
- 13:50know, how how fair is that? It's not fair? So we you
- 13:52know, we have to make sure we're taking care of every student's needs,
- 13:56but sometimes we have to look at the majority and say, you know,
- 14:00this is affecting the majority of the students and we need to change the behavior
- 14:03of one. You know, it's we've come to the point that we're making
- 14:07exceptions for people the minority. You know, we're making a lot of exceptions
- 14:11and saying, you know, we have to we have to adjust or adapt
- 14:16for this person instead of trying to teach them how to adapt to society and
- 14:20teach them how to adapt to the rules and adapt to the laws of our
- 14:22land. You know. Yeah, before we let you go, I got
- 14:26two things for One of those is there's been these hearing senator around the state
- 14:30about PEA and all the problems that it's facing. There was one held in
- 14:33Charleston. I think just last week, they've been held around the states.
- 14:37Where are we? Where are you on pi A as we head into a
- 14:39new session next month? Are we going to get some of these things some
- 14:43of these questions answered? I guess that's a very broad question. But where
- 14:48are we on PA and moving forward? You know, Dave, I'm a
- 14:52PIA policy holder, so I definitely never ever want to see raises, and
- 14:56you so in my premiums increases in my premium. What I look at is
- 15:01I ask my neighbors, and I ask my friends who have private insurance.
- 15:05Has your insurance gone up? Their answer is always yes, and their answer
- 15:09is usually four paying forty percent more this year in our premium, you know.
- 15:13And so I try to take a perspective of that and understand that insurance
- 15:16has to raise as healthcare costs go up. And I think what we got
- 15:20used to us PI policy holders is for what fifteen years, there was no
- 15:24premium increase because the state just absorbed that. And I think that we have
- 15:28to maybe look at that and say, Okay, we got used to that
- 15:31when we probably shouldn't have. Every year there should have been a small increase,
- 15:35don't I don't want to pay more. Nobody does, but you know,
- 15:39that's just it's a part of life. As things go up. You
- 15:41know, our costs go up to the state is still absorbing most of that,
- 15:45you know. I think what we're looking at is PI premiums are going
- 15:48to go up for the policy holder like fifteen percent. And when I asked
- 15:52my neighbor the other day about their private insurance they did they said forty percent
- 15:56last year. I couldn't believe that, and that's it's ridiculous for any any
- 16:00insurance to go up that much. But it's a fact of life. And
- 16:03if we can take care of it, you know, we definitely will.
- 16:04But I know that it's probably not going to get taken care of this year.
- 16:08That's just my thought process on it. I think we have discussed it
- 16:14a little bit to see what we can do. Maybe another pay raise.
- 16:17We're not sure, but I don't know what's going to happen yet. We're
- 16:18still on discussions for this all right, final thing here, I had a
- 16:22text here for you that going back to the Smiths Underwood Scholarships, someone asked
- 16:27to please ask Integrady, since you are the sending education chair, why wasn't
- 16:32the program funded? You kind of explain that a little bit, but in
- 16:33case they may have missed it, explained again why this shortfall. Well,
- 16:38it was funded in two thousand, I believe twenty nineteen. It was before
- 16:41I was in the legislature. It was in twenty nineteen it was funded,
- 16:45and that it was kind of I guess I don't want to say this,
- 16:48but I kind of want to say maybe a trial and error basis, see
- 16:51how much it was going to be used, and it was just never brought
- 16:53to the attention to be put in the budget to be recurring. That it
- 16:57was that it was going to drive up or run out, and that that's
- 17:03my I mean, that's my answer. So what I'm hoping we can do
- 17:06is to get it taken care of so these kids that are applying for this
- 17:08year they won't miss it and so that their funding would be there for that.
- 17:12And that's what that's what the goal is, and I think we can
- 17:15probably do that. I think that the chancellor said we're looking at one point
- 17:18five million dollars to fund that, and that gives about twenty five kids the
- 17:23scholarship for for their four years of college. All Right, Senator Grady as

- 20:29her to slow down next time she's on. She's talking so fast and makes
- 20:33me dizzy. Look, I can't complain about anybody talking too fast, all
- 20:36right, so noted, not slow down, Senator Grady. She's just very
- 20:40passionate. She just gets excited about what she's talking about. Texas Centator Grady
- 20:45did a good job. But we have to pay our teachers adequately and quit
- 20:48taking away benefits if we want quality. If we want quality, we must
- 20:52pay for quality, says a texture textra says, I think things got worse
- 20:56when the GOP was calling teachers names and telling teachers they needed to get back
- 21:00in the classrooms during the pandemic, with no concerns for people's safety. It
- 21:04is sad. Tex says it's so unfair that students don't feel safe at school.
- 21:08The meantime, kids, it's time for the monthly school shooting drill.
- 21:12Don't think for a second the Senator Grady or the Republican Legislature thinks this is
- 21:15a situation that's worth addressing. They'll just give guns to the kids, just
- 21:19like they did for college. According to a Texter, Rick Cavner is executive
- 21:25director Charleston Urban Works. He joins us right now, Richard, good morning.
- 21:27How are you, sir? You knowing I'm doing fine. Thank you
- 21:30for being here. Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Thanksgiving. I'm surprised you've never heard
- 21:33gotten the comment about me talking fast. That's like the main feedback I get
- 21:37as I talk to you fast. You know it happens, it as not
- 21:41this early in the morning. Yeah, little congested there. We're just trying
- 21:45to get you through this. Thank you. Yeah, I appreciate it.
- 21:47So, first of all, I know your role as the director Charleston Urban
- 21:49Works and also as a member of the Canagh County Board of Education. You've
- 21:53been closely watching the situation with the gas crisis on the West Side. No,
- 21:57it's not necessarily your field of expert, but any thoughts from you on
- 22:00that well, well, I just continue to think about all these affected families.
- 22:03You know, it's so unfortunate and it didn't have to happen. I'll
- 22:07just say that, and I hate I will say the way that our city's
- 22:11administration and so many members of the community and city council members have stepped up
- 22:15and have been right there in the middle of trying to get make sure these
- 22:18folks are getting heaters, getting the supplies they need to stay warm during this
- 22:22time of year. You know, it's it's mostly affected residential has affected some
- 22:26businesses, you know, and I think that's probably where I would speak more
- 22:29just because of sure we do. I mean, I've been in touch with
- 22:32some of the business owners. I guess would be south of Washington Street is
- 22:34where the affected area is. You know, it's really affected them. It's
- 22:38really been a huge deal to be out of business that many days. As
- 22:41you know, Dave, you know, every day you're not making revenue,
- 22:44you're you're you're going in the whole last week, you're still you still have
- 22:47expenses, right Yeah. Millie Snyder, I get from the Shape Shop,
- 22:51was on the show talking about that last next week or last week, we'll
- 22:55talk about the state of business and Charles right now, Rick, particularly small
- 22:57business. You know, a lot of buzz around downtown Charleston these days and
- 23:00the holiday season Holly Jolly Brawley Friday Saturday, the ongoing Slango law light,
- 23:06the night over to ball Park seems to downtown Charleston's pretty lit up. It's
- 23:10kind of like the place to be. Yeah, you know, the whole
- 23:11really sort of urban core is that there's things going on everywhere, and there's
- 23:17definitely seems to be an excitement that surrounds the holidays over the last few years,
- 23:21certainly this year that maybe wasn't here you know, six seven, eight
- 23:23years ago, at least to this extent, it's really exciting to see.
- 23:26You know, it's bringing people in these what the things you just mentioned alone
- 23:30are bringing thousands of people in that do not live in Charleston, right They
- 23:33they live in the surrounding counties. I've heard stores of people coming in from
- 23:37other states. You know, we're talking that's that's new revenue. What we're
- 23:41experiencing that the city is experiencing, that these businesses, the surrounding businesses are
- 23:45experiencing the vendors there that are set up in those spaces that are experiencing.
- 23:49Economically, it's great, and culturally it's great. It's bringing it, it's
- 23:52it's it's it's adding this this this this layer of culture to our to our
- 23:56city that didn't exist before. Yeah, I mean it's just amazing. I
- 24:00mean again, Charleston's back on the map again when it comes to these sorts
- 24:03of things. So yeah, it's it's great to see. And I'm always
- 24:06happy when any of our local cities here in the valley do well well r
- 24:10South Charleston, St. Albans Hurricane and you know, let's let's let's have
- 24:12success for all of them, and you know, and and support these small
- 24:15businesses. Speaking of which, perfect transition, talk about small business Saturday.
- 24:21What's going in Charlie West this Saturday. Yeah, you know, we just
- 24:22we want to make sure to always our organization, along with several other organizations.
- 24:26I'm sure, I want to make sure to remind everyone. You know,
- 24:30Black Friday is one thing. We've seen a lot of the Black Black
- 24:33Friday sales start way earlier, right, and a lot of them are online
- 24:36these days. But of course it's not the big deal. That's not the
- 24:37big deal that it used to be, which is probably not a bad thing,
- 24:41correct, I mean, these these these businesses are doing those larger businesses
- 24:44are doing well all year long. Right. But you know what we're seeing
- 24:47with Small Business Saturday is a is a huge focus on that, and we're
- 24:51seeing a lot of people making the choice too. Instead of you know,
- 24:55running up to the big box chain hardware store, they're shopping at the local
- 24:59hard store on Small Business Saturday. Or it's not just Small Business Saturday,
- 25:02but throughout the year. But but the purpose of Small Business Saturday is to
- 25:06shine a spotlight on all of these small businesses in hermind, folks, that
- 25:10these are these are the heartbeats of our community, right, these are the
- 25:14places that make us Charleston, West Virginia. Right that these these small local
- 25:18businesses, whether they're restaurants, whether they're service, you know in the service
- 25:22industry, whether they're the professional services, whether they're you know, breweries,
- 25:26bars, whatever it may be, these are the places that make our city
- 25:30what it is. Just handed out some awards last week, did you not.
- 25:34We did. We had our Urban Night Award. Yeah, no,
- 25:37it was great. You know. We we started this back in twenty sixteen
- 25:42as a way to sort of thank the business districts, the community at large,
- 25:48business owners, property owners, volunteers, artists, employees, civic leaders.
- 25:56We have seven different categories we hand out awards in and uh, you
- 26:00know, we started just to make sure that to reflect on the year and
- 26:03think those who are really making a difference. You know, it's hard to
- 26:07pick just one in each category, right, or maybe two in some cases,
- 26:10because so many of these these again, these property business owners, these
- 26:12volunteers, the civic leaders, they're doing so much to make our especially the
- 26:17urban core of our city what it is. So you know, every year
- 26:22it gets a little gets a little bigger, a crowd gets a little bigger,
- 26:26we have more people getting involved with it. We do our best to
- 26:29surprise all the award winners. I think this year we only had two that
- 26:32that we had to tell ahead of time to make sure they got there.
- 26:34We're pretty sneaky about it. We tell their family, their friends and get
- 26:37them, get them to come there and surprise them during the awards. But
- 26:40a c Inter National Bank has been our sponsor of that since it started,
- 26:41and we definitely appreciate that and it's been it's been a huge success and we
- 26:45love we love being able to do it every year. Well, it's on
- 26:48the horizon for the business wise, for the city of Charleston. I mean,
- 26:51there's been all kinds of talk. I know that you're in on all
- 26:53the negotiations. I mean, what can we look forward to? Well,
- 26:57you got to hand it on twenty twenty four, what do you what do
- 27:00you got going on? Because there's been all kinds There's been announcements about you
- 27:03know, the companies moving here and things of that nature. Talk about to
- 27:07any of that this we mostly we mostly try to keep our finger on the
- 27:10pulses. Like you know, the big announcement about the new business that's going
- 27:12in where a Caskie building is, right, that's an example that's going to
- 27:15be a little bit but still, I mean that's an example of keeping our
- 27:18finger on the pulse on that to make sure we know, like how many
- 27:19employees are going to be moving too that space. It's sort of like I'm
- 27:22sure you saw the announcement about Legal Aid is going to be moving to the
- 27:26Stat's Hospital building in Elk City on the west side. Right, So we're
- 27:27talking this is just an example. It's sort of anecdotal, but you know,
- 27:30that's fifty five employees, fifty five sets of feet that are going to
- 27:33be on the street alone, not including the clients that come in, right
- 27:37and so we've got to make sure that we're prepared for that, you know,
- 27:41to make sure that we're doing our best or recruiting new business to come
- 27:45in to show them how attractive that is to have that many professional folks that
- 27:48are going to be working right there in the middle of everything that's happened in
- 27:52the Ylk City District every single day, right so, you know, that
- 27:56kind of thing we're constantly looking at. Of course, you know our west
- 28:00Side Gateway lighting initiative. I'm sure we've I know I've been on to talk
- 28:03about that in the past. You know, we are timeline for that.
- 28:06We'll have that project complete by the end of winter of twenty twenty four,
- 28:10so that's going to be here before we know it. Right in the middle
- 28:11of phase two of that project. Our facade grant program continues to do well.
- 28:15We're getting ready to evaluate our next round of applications right now. We've
- 28:18already given away over twenty five thousand dollars of facade grant funds this year,
- 28:22and you know, with this new newly restructured organization. We're going to be
- 28:26our new working groups are going to be formed, and we're going to be
- 28:30inviting members of the public to come and send in these working groups to help
- 28:32shape our work plans and our strategic plan for the next three years. So
- 28:36you know, it's a lot of exciting stuff coming up. We're going to
- 28:37take a tiny little break here. Need I'll be honest, I need like
- 28:41this a week, maybe a week and a half off at the end of
- 28:42this year, and then you know, at the very beginning of the new
- 28:45year, come back and be really excited about the next steps we have and
- 28:51before we let you go. I think sometimes people that sometimes people don't take
- 28:55into consideration that when you have these new businesses that are moving into EXAs the
- 29:00location, it's probably easier if they're building a new building because you can build
- 29:03what you want. But sometimes there's other things other than just okay, we
- 29:07got fifty fifty workers coming in here, as you said, access to sometimes
- 29:11public transportation sometimes because what we're finding, and I think this is fascinating,
- 29:15is that a lot of younger people don't drive, and they and they want
- 29:19to live and they want to come to areas rick, that they can ride
- 29:23a bike, or that they can walk, or they can uber or they
- 29:26can do whatever. That's got to be taken into consideration. Are there eateries
- 29:30in the area, parking things of that nature. There's a whole lot that
- 29:33goes into it other than just the job. Oh yeah, well, and
- 29:37that I'll bring I'll use that as another example is like, you know,
- 29:40making sure there's adequate parking for a business that has that many employees, right,
- 29:44And that's something that they that they internally talk about and figure out.
- 29:45And I'm sure they will and they probably already have. I'm sure they have.
- 29:49But yeah, you're right. I mean, the the dynamic is shifting
- 29:52a little bit. I think it took a little more time here in Charleston
- 29:56for that that that that mindset to get there. But we're seeing to the
- 30:00point more and more people that are wanting to live in in condos and lofts
- 30:03right, you know, right that may be right right above a business.
- 30:06There's several in the Ox City District Accident on the west side, you know,
- 30:10one or two apartments that are above a you know, a restaurant or
- 30:14a boutique or whatever. And that's becoming more and more popular because folks want
- 30:18to have really close access to everything they need without having to go very far.
- 30:22And we're seeing a lot of that here in Charleston, not just in
- 30:25the Ox City District on the west side, but all throughout downtown East End.
- 30:27We're seeing that more and more. So, yeah, that's a great
- 30:30point, and I'll just say, you know, we're really excited about the
- 30:33outlay of the business uh uh sort of the business community as as we approach
- 30:37twenty twenty four. There are some challenges you and I have talked about those
- 30:40when I've been on before. We have some buildings that we need to see
- 30:42filled. That's a multi step process in some cases. You know, we
- 30:47can only go so far as an organization to offer incentives and to offer education.
- 30:52Property and business owners excuse me, property owners have to you know,
- 30:55they have they do play a huge role in that making sure that they have
- 30:57available property that that's turnkey or at least could be turnkey. We're seeing that
- 31:03more and more historic buildings being transformed into spaces that are ready for you know,
- 31:07a business that needs two thousand square feet, whatever the case may be.
- 31:10So it's a it's an everyday process that's for sure. Well, Rick,
- 31:12I appreciate you taking time at your schedule to be here. Rick cavint,
- 31:15the executive director Charles and Urban Works. Have yourself a Thanksgiving, a

- 35:22been going on in Israel for the past month and a couple of weeks.
- 35:25One of the groups has been watching things closely. There is the Faith and
- 35:29Freedom Coalition. They have an active group of course here in West Virginia.
- 35:30Some have been on this show, but I wanted to welcome in to this
- 35:34show this morning. Tim Head, who is executive director of the North Carolina
- 35:37Branch if you will, of this group they just got back from Israel.
- 35:40Some others joined them as well. Kind of wanted to get a take on
- 35:43that, Jim or Tim rather, I'm sorry, good morning, Welcome to
- 35:45the show. Good morning, Tia. Thanks so much for having me this
- 35:50morning. You're right, these are challenging days in the Middle East and certainly
- 35:53in Israel, so thanks for talking about that. Absolutely, Let's start with
- 35:57the broad question here, Tim, what did you see there? Well,
- 36:01look, I mean I think the simple version is it's a it's a sobervering
- 36:06place right now. You know. The the fascinating thing is is I think
- 36:08in the middle of Yeah, I mean, it certainly applies to Israel.
- 36:14But frankly, any any time in life, whenever people are experiencing irist moments,
- 36:19there their greatest need. Whenever whenever somebody shows up to try to help
- 36:23and to try to understand, it makes an even bigger impact than normal.
- 36:27And I think I was I'm encouraged that that a lot of a lot of
- 36:31Israelis are are kind of there. One one quote that really stuck with me.
- 36:38A young lady who lives kind of in the southern part of Jerusalem said,
- 36:44you know, We've always thought of American Christians as friends, but we
- 36:46now think of them as family. And I think it's it's, you know,
- 36:50whenever, whenever you show up and kind of go out of your way
- 36:52to to show love and and solidarity, it really means for people when they're
- 36:58going through really really hard times. Absolutely, Uh, Tim, There is
- 37:01talk that there, and ABC News has been covering and Hoppy talked about it
- 37:07as well on the network. There maybe uh negotiations on going as far as
- 37:10the prisoners and others there go. I know you're obviously not in on the
- 37:14negotiations, but what is the sense that you hear about possible negotiations when you
- 37:20were there? What's the public saying about it? Well, clearly, I
- 37:25think the hostage negotiation is kind of the front and front of all Israeli's minds.
- 37:34It's a fairly small place. Yeah, yeah, and we hope that
- 37:38that can get worked out. Why is this so important to those of us
- 37:45here in America? And I say that, I know that sounds like the
- 37:47most asked nine question other Tim, but but I say that because we see
- 37:52things, and we have throughout my lifetime that go on on other ends of
- 37:55the world, and you're thinking people have a tendency and say, well,
- 37:58that doesn't necessarily affect us here in America. Why is this so important to
- 38:01your organization? To you and others? You bet? You bet well.
- 38:06Look, I think that there's a there's kind of a element. And then
- 38:08they're also for us at faith in printic coalition is a is a biblical element.
- 38:13But from the kind of strategic side, you know, UH needs friends
- 38:17around the world and and frankly we don't have it, and UH and I
- 38:22would I would argue that Israel maybe our closest ally certainly in the Middle East
- 38:29by far to be one of the closest in the world. And so we
- 38:31you know, we we actually rely on and and need need a strong and
- 38:37also an autonomous Israel just because you know, in that that highly volatile area
- 38:43of the world, there's not only a lot of anti Israel into anti Jewish
- 38:46sentiment, but also a lot of anti American sentiment. And then from standpoint
- 38:52you know, those that that hold to a Christian world. There are a
- 38:57number of scriptures throughout us the New Testament they call on Christians to bless Israel
- 39:02and to do tim are you there? We have a horrible phone connection with
- 39:13Tim down in North Carolina. Are you there? Tim? All right?
- 39:19Tim? I think we may have lost Tim, So Hollywood, Jeff,
- 39:22if you can, we'll just stand by, just go ahead and kill the
- 39:24call. We'll try to get him back on the show as best weekend.
- 39:28Yeah, he's got to get Tim a landline down there in North Carolina wherever
- 39:30it is he's calling from this morning, because the connection there was terrible,
- 39:37So hopefully we'll be able to get him back on the line. And one
- 39:39of the reasons I do want to get him back in the line is because
- 39:42I really wanted to get his take on these anti Israeli sentiments that you see
- 39:46around America, particularly on large college campuses that you see and again, I
- 39:53know in this twenty four hour news cycle that it's amplified times ten thousand plus.
- 39:58You've get everybody's got a platue form now with social media and so on
- 40:00and so forth. But it's it's really unfortunate that we're seeing the response that
- 40:08we are. And again, I don't want to I bring politics into everything,
- 40:12and I don't like to Necessarily I wouldn't ask Tim this, but while
- 40:15we're trying to get him back on the line, UH this morning. I
- 40:17will say this that moving forward, this is going to be a problem I
- 40:22think for the Democratic Party. UH next year is their answer and their response
- 40:28to this, because not everybody's on board with this. I think we got
- 40:30Tim back. Tim, Are you there with us now? I am.
- 40:34I apologize it happens. I was just about to say, and we'll wrap
- 40:37it up with this. What do you think, Tim, when you see
- 40:39about the when you see the anti Israeli sentiments around the United States, particularly
- 40:46college campus is larger cities. What what goes through your mind when you see
- 40:50those Because they're they're certainly out there, they definitely are out there, and
- 40:54and you know, unfortunately, I think what we're seeing is that they may
- 40:58may have been kind of latent, you know, a dormant out there,
- 41:00but whenever something that's flickered its it's made those recesses become more more pronounced.
- 41:08Here here's the deal. You know, I think that that not only is
- 41:12anti Semitism broadly extremely problematic. You know, we obviously are well aware of
- 41:19the nineteen forties, but the centiment behind that as as dangerous as anti Semitism
- 41:23is. The sentiment behind that really is extraordinarily dangerous, and so I think
- 41:30that we need to do everything we can to to kind of push back and
- 41:35keep that at bay, because you know, frankly, it's just a very
- 41:38very destructive worldview and a way of thinking and certainly a way of acting,
- 41:44you know, in civil society and on college campuses, and so we you
- 41:46know, we appreciate opportunities like this to be able to express our support for
- 41:52the Jewish people and for Israel. Tim Hand, as the executive director of
- 41:55the North Carolina branch of this group, Tim, I appreciate you taking time
- 41:59out of your sched Joel, have a happy Thanksgiving and we will will be
- 42:02in touch. I appreciate it. Thanks a lot, Thank you so much.

- 42:47same God. Do you think that God is looking down saying, yea,
- 42:51this is the chaos I want carried out in my name? Do you think
- 42:53God cares who governs Israel? Well, you know, I'm not going to
- 42:58get into a religious discussion because I am certainly not qualified to do so.
- 43:04I consider myself to be a Christian. I like most Christians, I am
- 43:07way imperfect, way imperfect. But you know, I just never thought.
- 43:15I guess maybe this is just me and me and dumb country boy naive.
- 43:17I never thought that I would see in America the anti Israeli movement that we
- 43:28see at America. I don't know that you would have seen it twenty five
- 43:30years ago. I really don't. And it just takes me by surprise.
- 43:35You know, at this age in my life, you know, Jeff,
- 43:37nothing should surprise me. Anymore. But I guess maybe I was just taken
- 43:44aback by the whole thing. And I watch a lot of news, as
- 43:46you can imagine, and what I watch primarily is not Fox News. As
- 43:51a matter of fact, I do not watch Fox News at all other than
- 43:53well, okay, I like The Five because I think gut Fiel's funny.
- 43:58But other than that, the majority of the news I digest is I try
- 44:02to find stuff middle of the road as best I can. But if I'm
- 44:06going to lean one side or the other, I tend to wanna I tend
- 44:08to want to follow maybe a little bit more liberal news source. It's just
- 44:12because I can kind of get in the minds of people and see what they're
- 44:14thinking, you know, and see maybe a different perspective. Know that's a
- 44:16very very odd thing. But even some of them, even like the Bill
- 44:21Mahers of the world. I'm a big fan of Bill Maher and I watch
- 44:23the show every week, and even the Bill Maher, who is like the
- 44:27super super super liberal, are saying, what the heck is going on here?
- 44:31I mean, with this anti Israeli sentiment, it's it's amazing, Texas
- 44:37anti Israeli sentiments do not equate to anti Semitism. A person doesn't automatically hate
- 44:43Jews if they think Israel is a criminal state. According to a texture Texas,
- 44:52the Palestinians are the ones who produce the murderous terrorists. According to a
- 44:55texture. All right, I got some more texts to get to, some

- 47:34Man? Where you been? Well? I've just been busy taking care
- 47:39of myself, health flies and everything like that. But I did get out
- 47:45for an hour and just yesterday their day before, and it was interest and
- 47:52I was talking to my caregiver and she was helping me. I was at
- 47:58number one dry looking at the puppies, but that is my cover up.
- 48:06I put me that to play the machines. But anyway, there was the
- 48:13gril one that said that's Jim Brown and he used to be on the radio.
- 48:20And I was so honored and impressed. And Dave, you could give
- 48:27me an answer a little bit later. But I would like to be on
- 48:32the Friday Show as a cold person because of the years I was in radio,
- 48:39and there's a lot of people at the HS and on talk radio that
- 48:46remember my days of that is possible, all right, Well, Jim will
- 48:52certainly take that under consideration. Happy Thanksgiving man, big plans for Thanksgiving.
- 48:58Well, that my sister had to have open heart surgery. She's presidently at
- 49:05Saint Mary's recuperating, but she is going to be Okay, as far as
- 49:10we know, so this is going to be I'm fouandful for Thanksgiving, but
- 49:16no big plan. All right, Well, enjoy whatever you do, Jim,
- 49:21and we'll talk again soon. I appreciate it. Man, Thanks a
- 49:22lot. It is four minutes away from ten. Quickly onto the gas crisis.
- 49:27As of last night, at least eight hundred and twenty five customers of
- 49:30Mountaineer Gas had their service turned back on. Now that doesn't mean that they're
- 49:32back to normal because now many of the residents their appliances, to furnaces,
- 49:37what not have to be totally replaced. Mountaineer Gas Senior vice president Moses Scaff
- 49:43was on Hoppy yesterday and says as of yesterday about eighty percent of the forty
- 49:47six miles of pipe that were filled with water had been drained. Now,
- 49:51mister Scaff said that they will probably be at one hundred percent by living this
- 49:55week. But again, the real issue is replacing the appliances and whatnot.
- 50:01The gas company and their contractors are taking care of that, by the way,
- 50:05And if you go back and you listen to the interview that Hoppy did
- 50:12with Moses Scaff, which, by the way, you could do with the
- 50:14Metro and news site. Mister Scaff was hesitant. I thought this was interesting.
- 50:19I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday afternoon who asked me if
- 50:22I had heard the interview that Hoppy did with Moses Scaff yesterday, and I
- 50:25said yes. My friend said, well, was that not the most dramatic
- 50:30pause in the history of radio? And I said yeah, And it was
- 50:34when Hoppy asked mister Scaff about the gas companies conversations with Western and American Water,
- 50:42and it was. It was a pretty long dramatic pause there before mister
- 50:47Scaff basically said, it's not what it should be. That's kind of what
- 50:52I'm reading into it. And then I'm not throwing stones here, or maybe
- 50:55I am. But has anyone else noticed how most of Scaff has been on
- 51:00the show and on hobbying and paper TV news. He's been everywhere talking about
- 51:06this situation. I don't know mister staff personallyouldn't know if he walked through the
- 51:07door right now, but he was on my show last week. He's been
- 51:09a hobby been on the news West Virginia, American Water has been all but
- 51:15mia in this whole mess. Now, once everyone is back online, whenever
- 51:20that is, that's when the real fund begins, because then there are going
- 51:22to be a lot of questions to answer. Mayor Goodwin said last night that
- 51:25the next step, once everyone is back online, will be to find out
- 51:29how this happened, to make sure it never happens again. Complaints have been
- 51:32filed already with the Public Service Commission. The only statement really I've heard from
- 51:38West Virginia American Water has been we will cooperate, et cetera, et cetera.
- 51:43The governor wants answers the residents. The residents the most important people of
- 51:47all this. Forget about the media and the governor and every I mean,
- 51:50the residents are the most important part of this. The residents want answers to
- 51:53I liketed officials. Everybody wants because as a total outsider here, it looks
- 52:00like Mountaineer gases out here doing all the work and trying to answer questions and
- 52:05come up with solutions or problems that they didn't create. Me do better,
- 52:10West Virginia American Water, do better. It's a pattern better, all right.
- 52:16I did not get to all the texts. I will do my best
- 52:20to try to correct that tomorrow and tomorrow show actually offered glass from the Putnam
- 52:24County Chamber of Conferences. Here more on the fourth annual Charleston Police Department winner
