- 0:27live show here with Gino, and of course we'll probably do a great after
- 0:30show afterwards after eight o'clock here, but for the next hour on the radio,
- 0:34we're here talking Yukon women's basketball. That's your cough button there if you
- 0:37need it there young man. Okay, okay, yes, your CALV tonight.
- 0:40That's from that's from CALV show at Bears. So we're here at Cafe
- 0:45or talking Yukon women's basketball. Thirteen wins in a row for your basketball team
- 0:50and Tuesday night, yeah, first place in the Big East by two and
- 0:56a half on Creighton three on the rest of the field. That's crazy.
- 0:59But but Tuesday night at Marquette, boy, that game changed real fast.
- 1:03I mean mid second quarter, we're talking like five ties, ten lead changes,
- 1:07and then all of a sudden. I think what Adam told me was
- 1:11like nineteen of your next twenty three shots went in over an eleven minute span,
- 1:15and off you went, and you couldn't miss from three after going one
- 1:19for five at the start. That was that was just fun to see how
- 1:23that game escalated. Yeah, you know, you never know how games are
- 1:27gonna are gonna go, and sometimes sometimes the worst thing that could happen.
- 1:34And you saw what happen to Marquette when they played it at the Excel Center
- 1:38when we played them there. You get off to such a great start,
- 1:41you know, they were up ten to nothing, and you start to get
- 1:45like a little false sense of security, you know, and and when you
- 1:53start by shooting the ball poorly, you got to make sure you don't kind
- 2:00of get into well was me, today is not my day? And some
- 2:04kids are like that. You know, they make their first two shots and
- 2:07they are going to make the next twelve, and they missed their first two
- 2:09shots and all over their face. Today is going to be a lousy night
- 2:15for me. Meanwhile, there's like thirty seven minutes left in the game,
- 2:17you know, so you you always obviously like to get it out to a
- 2:23good start, but it doesn't always work out that way. And I think
- 2:28there's so much confidence on our team that we're going to there's going to be
- 2:30a point in time. We just don't know when during the course of the
- 2:35game where we're going to go on a good run, because that's what we've
- 2:38been doing. So there's tremendous belief on our team that that's just a matter
- 2:43of time before it comes. And right now, you know, the way
- 2:47we're shooting the ball, I think we're leading the country in field goal percent
- 2:52pretty close. You in South Carolina, Yeah yeah, And that as long
- 2:58as you can make shots, that takes care of a lot of different things
- 3:00that can go wrong. You know, you can do everything right and the
- 3:02ball doesn't go in the basket, you're gonna lose anyway. So you'd rather
- 3:07do most things wrong and the ball goes in the basket and you win.
- 3:09It's called basketball, right, You got to put the ball in the basket,
- 3:14but you also have to defend, and your team's done that well.
- 3:15And the thing that really we saw differently from the first Marquette game, and
- 3:21this is a Marquette team that's only been out rebounded by one team and that's
- 3:24your team in two games. But the way they did it, they changed
- 3:28their style because your team was so dominant on the glass the first time.
- 3:31Yes, you didn't have Aubrey for game two like you did in game one,
- 3:35but they were sending four players back as soon as the ball went up
- 3:38on the perimeter. And that's how you change their game. And again you
- 3:40were able to out rebound them. Well, that's that's one way too.
- 3:46That's one way to combat a team that wants to get out and play fast
- 3:53is you just send everybody back. I think if you see that in the
- 3:59NBA today, those of you that watch NBA games, you know that's what's
- 4:03happening. People shoot and everybody runs back because everybody's so conscious of if we
- 4:09don't run back, they're going to get an open three over here and open
- 4:12three over here. So people are very conscious about get back on defense because
- 4:15that's where all the open threes come from. They come and transition team.
- 4:19When kids are trying to figure out who's my man, who's man is that?
- 4:23Well, it's too late, that guy already shot it. So that's
- 4:28that was their game plan. Let's run back on D and try not to
- 4:30let Connecticut get too many transition baskets. But we got them anyway, you
- 4:38know, we got them anyway. And and you know, if teams,
- 4:44if teams that are really really good rebounding teams, if we can get them
- 4:50to kind of do that less, then obviously, given the size of our
- 4:55lineup, that's obviously a big plus for us. You know, we're not
- 5:01the biggest team in the country anymore. No, no, that's for sure,
- 5:04but you're certainly making the most of it with what you've got pretty good
- 5:09defensively, getting a lot of steels too. Well, there's it's like,
- 5:15because we're a little bit undersized, we have a huge disadvantage when we're on
- 5:20defense. So the less time that we can be on defense, the better
- 5:28for us. So some teams do it this way. They block a lot
- 5:32of shots, so that's like a turnover, right, A block shot is
- 5:39like a turnover. Well, we don't have shot blockers, so if we
- 5:43steal the ball, that means you have one less opportunity to come down and
- 5:48run your offense against our defense. Now what happens is when we get a
- 5:53couple zala nude guys that do some dumb stuff and then commit early dumbs,
- 6:00then all of a sudden, our pressure is gone because we can't get out
- 6:01there and do what we want to do because we're in foul trouble. And
- 6:05that was the other thing that happened in the game. The game was refereed
- 6:10one way in the first half and it was refereed a different way in the
- 6:13second half. Does not drive your nuts, Well, yeah, it drives
- 6:16me nuts, except when the way it was refereed in the second half benefited
- 6:20us. So I liked it okay, because there was a bunch of players
- 6:26where I went, man, that's a foul, and there was no call,
- 6:28And then there was another player I said, that's a foul. No
- 6:30call. But it made up for it in the first half when I go,
- 6:32what kind of call is that? That's not a foul? And then
- 6:34you sew the play where a Leah Aliah's guarding a kid at the top of
- 6:39the key and the kid just goes I guess boom, lowers her shoulder knocks
- 6:43a Leah down and the ref standing there. You know, I didn't see
- 6:49anything. She's doing her best Sergeant Schultz impression there. I seen nothing.
- 6:57I didn't see it, nothing, not seeing nothing, nothing aging ourselves.
- 7:00Great show, though, well everybody here is they saw the show. Yeah,
- 7:05my brother has every show on DVD. That was one of his favorites
- 7:09growing up. There you go, we're with Gino, we're live at Cafe,
- 7:11or we'll get into some of the nooks and crannies of his team,
- 7:14the freshman particularly Ashlyan and the KK they've been tremendous and Q's coming. It's
- 7:18the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show, Live from Cafe right here on Learfield.
