- 0:23Speaker 2: with me here this morning. We'll start with Jake, our
- 0:25Speaker 2: newest edition to the team.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Jake, we're becoming good friends.
- 0:29Speaker 2: We're getting there, We're getting there, all right, all right,
- 0:31Speaker 2: so we're coworking. We're going to bounce over to Emma then,
- 0:33Speaker 2: because I.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Think I think we've already crossed that line.
- 0:36Speaker 1: We're on the friends level. I would definitely say, yeah, Emma,
- 0:39Speaker 1: Hippis and Emma just real quick, recent meteorological degree graduate.
- 0:44Speaker 1: How exciting is that for you to go right from
- 0:47Speaker 1: college to do in the morning show.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Yeah, super exciting. I mean starting in my home market
- 0:52Speaker 4: as well. I'm from Verona, twenty miles outside of Madison.
- 0:55Speaker 4: I grew up watching Channel twenty seven, So yeah, definitely
- 0:58Speaker 4: kind of a dream come true for first job.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I didn't know you were a local.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I grew up listening to this station,
- 1:05Speaker 4: so it's.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Great to see you and Jake you came from. You've
- 1:09Speaker 1: got a little different story, certainly. I've bounced around a
- 1:12Speaker 1: whole lot. I've been in Wisconsin just about a month.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I grew up in Los Angeles, I worked in Texas,
- 1:18Speaker 1: where I also went to school. I went to SMU,
- 1:22Speaker 1: and then moved my way to North Carolina, where I've
- 1:24Speaker 1: been for the last four years. Jake, iikes did with
- 1:27Speaker 1: twenty seven you've been on now? Has it been a month?
- 1:29Speaker 1: Almost a month? Yeah? Pretty much.
- 1:31Speaker 5: I think this week is a full month hitting employment,
- 1:34Speaker 5: so we're getting close to my benefits and all of
- 1:36Speaker 5: the other things that'll ha waries.
- 1:39Speaker 1: You've got healthy in exactly exactly, Dana. What's that like
- 1:43Speaker 1: when you welcome a new co anchor to the to
- 1:45Speaker 1: the morning shows that what's that experience been like for you?
- 1:47Speaker 2: It's been fantastic, you know, I understand. I've been here
- 1:50Speaker 2: for almost a decade now, so I am so sold
- 1:52Speaker 2: on Wisconsin as a whole, specifically southern Wisconsin. So when
- 1:55Speaker 2: I get to bring other people in and share that
- 1:57Speaker 2: excitement and say you're here, with us.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Now, let's do this, Let's go forward. It's been good.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I've loved also following you guys on social media, all
- 2:05Speaker 1: three of you, and you guys always are very fun
- 2:08Speaker 1: and having new things. Have you had a chance to
- 2:09Speaker 1: take them out and show them around town? And we did.
- 2:13Speaker 3: We did a Mallard's game which was a ton of fun.
- 2:15Speaker 2: And then we're trying to kick Jake out this weekend
- 2:17Speaker 2: doing the Square of course, are fare on the Squares
- 2:20Speaker 2: this weekend and then Feta Marquette.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah, what had you been your favorite Jake so far?
- 2:24Speaker 1: As far as just a venter experience here in Wisconsin.
- 2:27Speaker 5: You know, one of my favorites at least every Saturday
- 2:29Speaker 5: the Farmers Market downtown.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I live really close there.
- 2:33Speaker 5: Just getting to walk through and see all the people
- 2:35Speaker 5: who come down there for it, and get to see
- 2:37Speaker 5: all the local produce and see all the local businesses.
- 2:39Speaker 5: It's been kind of cool to meet and greet a
- 2:41Speaker 5: bunch of people down there. And honestly, I would love
- 2:45Speaker 5: to say that my favorite thing so far has been
- 2:47Speaker 5: just kayaking. Oh yeah, Nonona, I could spend hours and
- 2:51Speaker 5: hours and hours on there. I've never done anything like
- 2:53Speaker 5: that before. I've been on boats, and I've been to
- 2:56Speaker 5: the beach before, being from LA. But just sitting out
- 2:58Speaker 5: there in a kayak, you know you can you can
- 3:00Speaker 5: go as far as you want, you can go as
- 3:01Speaker 5: long as you want, or you can just kick your
- 3:03Speaker 5: feet up and relax.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's been It's been great for this summer. A
- 3:06Speaker 1: lot to explore and a lot to see in Emma.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Having your background here a Dane County lifelong resident, Yeah,
- 3:12Speaker 1: you've got to be a great influence as well, kind
- 3:14Speaker 1: of showing all the little tricks and secrets around the area, right,
- 3:17Speaker 1: I like to think.
- 3:18Speaker 4: So I need to get him to a uw football game.
- 3:21Speaker 4: That's my goal for this do a few of those. Yes,
- 3:23Speaker 4: I will be jumping around.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Oh, I can't wait to see. That's what we need.
- 3:27Speaker 4: That's in the future though, when I get there with that.
- 3:29Speaker 1: And is We talked this morning with the of course
- 3:31Speaker 1: Wake Up Wisconsin crew. We've got Dana Fulton, We've got
- 3:34Speaker 1: Jake Iixtend, and of course we've got Emma Hippis here
- 3:36Speaker 1: in studio with us this morning. Voices that you hear
- 3:38Speaker 1: each and every morning right here on thirteen ten WIBA
- 3:41Speaker 1: and throughout the day the morning show is and obviously
- 3:44Speaker 1: an important part for a lot of folks. That's kind
- 3:46Speaker 1: of how they start the day. And Dana, I'll ask
- 3:49Speaker 1: you a little bit about this, about kind of that
- 3:51Speaker 1: important role that you're playing for people. You're really setting
- 3:53Speaker 1: the mood for the entire day, aren't you.
- 3:55Speaker 2: One percent people get a routine, they want to wake
- 3:57Speaker 2: up and see a familiar face, they want to hear
- 3:59Speaker 2: a familiar and there's a comfort to that, and there's
- 4:02Speaker 2: a trust and authenticity that comes to that too. We're
- 4:05Speaker 2: especially in a time right now where there's an ai
- 4:08Speaker 2: revolution where you can pull any voice or any image
- 4:11Speaker 2: that you want and to be able to say no.
- 4:13Speaker 2: The three of us live here, we are with you.
- 4:15Speaker 2: We're starting our day with you too. These are stories
- 4:17Speaker 2: that matter to all three of us because we're in
- 4:19Speaker 2: this community. So that's why we're going to start and
- 4:22Speaker 2: share that information.
- 4:23Speaker 1: What time, And I guarantee you this is not the
- 4:25Speaker 1: first time it's beIN asked, probably not even the first time.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Today time you guys get started in the morning.
- 4:30Speaker 3: So the show starts.
- 4:31Speaker 2: At four thirty, but please know that we are in
- 4:33Speaker 2: the studio well before the three of us. I guess
- 4:36Speaker 2: we can all share our alarm situation. My alarm goes
- 4:38Speaker 2: off at about one thirty, and I'm one of those
- 4:40Speaker 2: people that only needs one alarm.
- 4:42Speaker 1: I'm with you, yeah, that early though.
- 4:44Speaker 4: My alarm goes off at twelve thirty, and then it
- 4:47Speaker 4: goes off every five minutes until two o'clock. My poor
- 4:50Speaker 4: roommates and I get in around two thirty in the morning.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Yeah, j has makes me feel like a loser.
- 4:56Speaker 5: I have a two to five alarm and then a
- 4:58Speaker 5: two ten emergency alarm that usually goes off once I'm
- 5:01Speaker 5: already up. But yeah, I'm two zero five right now
- 5:05Speaker 5: pretty much every day, and I try to be in
- 5:06Speaker 5: my chair just before three.
- 5:08Speaker 1: And Jake, is this your first morning show? It is?
- 5:10Speaker 4: Oh?
- 5:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 5: So I started in Texas my news career. I was
- 5:14Speaker 5: a reporter and did auxiliary sports, and that was in
- 5:17Speaker 5: West Texas where Friday Night Lights is king. The high
- 5:21Speaker 5: school football out there is the biggest thing anybody can
- 5:24Speaker 5: talk about, except for obviously the oil that comes from
- 5:26Speaker 5: the Permian Basin.
- 5:27Speaker 1: That's obviously really important too.
- 5:29Speaker 5: The energy infrastructure across America comes from West Texas, but
- 5:33Speaker 5: so does the love of the Great Iron. I would
- 5:35Speaker 5: say and that really helps spur my next job choice,
- 5:38Speaker 5: which was being the sports director in Wilmington, North Carolina.
- 5:42Speaker 5: I really hammered home our football coverage. Basketball is also
- 5:45Speaker 5: really big in North Carolina. But I think that sports
- 5:49Speaker 5: background has really helped me transition into the morning role.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Kind of like we're talking about, like there's a community
- 5:54Speaker 5: trust there. It's more than just information dissemination. There's a
- 5:58Speaker 5: relationship built of waying up with somebody and getting to
- 6:01Speaker 5: know who they are. They're quirks and you know what
- 6:04Speaker 5: they laugh at and things like that.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Are you gonna be working with Kylie when when football
- 6:07Speaker 1: high school football starts?
- 6:09Speaker 5: I would be honored and blessed to do anything in
- 6:13Speaker 5: any and everything that they asked me for you, and
- 6:15Speaker 5: every once fall rolls around, I will be working some
- 6:18Speaker 5: of those Friday nights and hopefully I can even get
- 6:20Speaker 5: involved in some Saturday stuff at Camp Randall.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I just got all the morning so do not take them,
- 6:25Speaker 2: but I do. I want to double down on that though,
- 6:27Speaker 2: because Jake and I share We both started in news,
- 6:29Speaker 2: and of course we found our niche He loves sports
- 6:32Speaker 2: and I love weather, but that combination in the morning
- 6:35Speaker 2: to know that, hey, we understand all the avenues of
- 6:37Speaker 2: local news and how we can start your date with that.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I think that's something that really attracted us to bringing
- 6:43Speaker 2: Jake onto this team.
- 6:44Speaker 1: What's it like? Obviously most folks remember you started as
- 6:47Speaker 1: here in Madison as a meteorologists. Now that now the anchor.
- 6:49Speaker 1: How does that for you? That's got to be it's
- 6:52Speaker 1: got It's a cool journey, and it's obviously your heart's
- 6:55Speaker 1: probably always in as much as you know you love
- 6:58Speaker 1: sharing the news. That stuff there is such an exciting
- 7:02Speaker 1: it is.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I mean, when is weather or not news?
- 7:05Speaker 2: I exactly absolutely a part of our structure when I'm
- 7:08Speaker 2: producing the show, not just anchoring it, but how does
- 7:10Speaker 2: it fit in all together? And whether we're talking about
- 7:12Speaker 2: all of the events happening all the weekend, if we're
- 7:14Speaker 2: talking about voting and what people need to wear to
- 7:16Speaker 2: go out the forecast, that part of my brain doesn't
- 7:19Speaker 2: shut down.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Talk this Morning with Dana Fulton and of course we've
- 7:22Speaker 1: also got Emma Hippus along with us and Jake. Iikes
- 7:24Speaker 1: had the newest member of Wake Up Wisconsin on WKOW
- 7:28Speaker 1: Channel twenty seven, talking a little bit about their day
- 7:29Speaker 1: and a little bit about a little bit about them
- 7:32Speaker 1: getting to know them a little bit more. And Jake,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you're a softball guy too, Am I right on there?
- 7:36Speaker 5: Yeah, so I've I am a two time intermural softball
- 7:39Speaker 5: champion from SMU. We actually beat the baseball team our
- 7:42Speaker 5: senior year of one of my great athletic feats. I
- 7:45Speaker 5: played a couple other adult sports along the way, love
- 7:47Speaker 5: like rec league basketball. I haven't done that in a
- 7:49Speaker 5: few years though, so it might take me a little
- 7:51Speaker 5: bit to actually move up and down the court at
- 7:54Speaker 5: this point of my life. But yeah, i'd say baseball, softball.
- 7:56Speaker 5: I'm a big golfer whenever I can get out. I know,
- 7:59Speaker 5: Wisconsin's got so many amazing public golf courses for me
- 8:02Speaker 5: to explore, especially while I can during the summer. But yeah,
- 8:06Speaker 5: those those kind of recreational sports are are big in
- 8:08Speaker 5: my life now that I've turned thirty, and I kind
- 8:10Speaker 5: of need to slow down from some of the other.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Like I said, you were talking about playing basketball. There's
- 8:14Speaker 5: zero football going on in my life now. The only
- 8:16Speaker 5: football going on is through the television.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Yeah, am I gotta ask you. You mentioned, of course, love
- 8:21Speaker 1: and get into the Badger games. What about free What
- 8:23Speaker 1: are some of your recreations. What do you do for
- 8:25Speaker 1: fun around town?
- 8:25Speaker 4: I'm a big reader. I also love exploring local coffee shops.
- 8:29Speaker 4: I feel like we've got a lot of really good ones,
- 8:31Speaker 4: like on Regent Street or on State Street. So I
- 8:34Speaker 4: love just getting around to like local businesses and just
- 8:36Speaker 4: you know, walks, especially right now, I love just kind
- 8:39Speaker 4: of getting around downtown, going to the terrace. I love
- 8:42Speaker 4: the lakes. Yeah, just stuff like that.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Dana on it, and I feel like you bring like
- 8:47Speaker 1: ever so often you'll have a little graphic. Those are
- 8:49Speaker 1: your dogs right on your head?
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yes, yes, if there are two little dogs and anyone
- 8:53Speaker 2: at home nodding along right now would know that. I
- 8:55Speaker 2: call them the sweet potatoes because they are. They're kind
- 8:57Speaker 2: of potato weep but also sweet. So if I'm out side,
- 9:00Speaker 2: they're usually involved in that.
- 9:03Speaker 1: That is fantastic talk this morning, of course with the
- 9:05Speaker 1: Wake Up Wisconsin team. Of course you can hear them
- 9:07Speaker 1: right at WKWCHANNL twenty seven. They go on there four
- 9:09Speaker 1: thirty AM, four thirty to seven, and then back at eleven.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Let's talk about that eleven o'clock newscast and what goes
- 9:16Speaker 1: into that. I obviously we talked about, you know, getting
- 9:18Speaker 1: everything set for the day with Wake Up Wisconsin the
- 9:21Speaker 1: eleven o'clock that's become a really important thing for folks
- 9:23Speaker 1: as well. Let's talk Dan. I know you obviously are
- 9:26Speaker 1: very much involved in, not just on camera, but behind
- 9:30Speaker 1: the scenes as well. Let's talk about what goes into
- 9:32Speaker 1: putting that all together.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Sure, our eleven o'clock show is now a statewide show.
- 9:36Speaker 2: And while that may sound very daunting and big, it's
- 9:39Speaker 2: it's I think, this great opportunity to share Wisconsin stories
- 9:43Speaker 2: for everybody. Because people in southern Wisconsin still vacation up north,
- 9:47Speaker 2: people up north still follow the Badgers, they still follow
- 9:49Speaker 2: what's happening in the capital city. So there's this wonderful
- 9:52Speaker 2: blend and it's a great thirty minute opportunity to say, hey,
- 9:55Speaker 2: just to recap everything. If you missed it, here are
- 9:57Speaker 2: the highlights. Here are the things that we're talking about
- 9:59Speaker 2: today across the state. It's also going to include national news,
- 10:02Speaker 2: but it's it's going to be the headlines for everybody
- 10:04Speaker 2: in Wisconsin. And that's the show that Jake is actually
- 10:07Speaker 2: going to be at the head of.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Now, oh, that's going to be yours. That's good now
- 10:10Speaker 1: I apologize because I'm typically sitting in a studio somewhere
- 10:14Speaker 1: at eleven. Now I do put you guys, I think, yeah,
- 10:16Speaker 1: you guys are on right now. Yeah, good job. Yes
- 10:21Speaker 1: that was completely coincidential, but darn good reason why it
- 10:24Speaker 1: is so for you? Jake, when when that kind of
- 10:28Speaker 1: starts going, what's for you? What's what are you looking
- 10:30Speaker 1: forward most with that?
- 10:31Speaker 5: With that eleven o'clock, Yeah, Dana kind of dove into
- 10:33Speaker 5: the philosophy of it. One of the biggest things, you know,
- 10:36Speaker 5: I recognize news as news and there is a need
- 10:39Speaker 5: to tell stories. But one of my biggest priorities is
- 10:42Speaker 5: making the show into something along the lines of like.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Tell me something good that I didn't know.
- 10:47Speaker 5: And that is I don't want to say easy to
- 10:50Speaker 5: do with the you know, the stories you can get
- 10:52Speaker 5: from across the state, but our affiliates also do a
- 10:54Speaker 5: great job of finding those kinds of stories. I love
- 10:57Speaker 5: any kind of just something that will leave you with
- 11:00Speaker 5: the smile. Again, like, I recognize not all news is
- 11:03Speaker 5: good news, and a lot of that is important. But
- 11:06Speaker 5: if there is a little way that I can tweak
- 11:08Speaker 5: something or add something in a little bit to add
- 11:11Speaker 5: a positive light and shine an element on those communities,
- 11:15Speaker 5: on the people in those communities, on a organization, a
- 11:18Speaker 5: nonprofit that is doing good. I'm most certainly going to
- 11:21Speaker 5: take that chance to do it.
- 11:22Speaker 1: That is great to hear as we talked this morning
- 11:24Speaker 1: with Jake Eichstad, of course, Dana Fulton and Emma Hippos
- 11:26Speaker 1: w kW Wake Up Wisconsin. H Dana, and this is
- 11:29Speaker 1: something I've got a chance over the years to watch
- 11:31Speaker 1: watch you on television and see a lot of a
- 11:34Speaker 1: lot of your work. It's an important balance and this
- 11:37Speaker 1: is something that I don't know that everyone fully appreciates.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Is obviously there's serious news. There's really you know, there's
- 11:43Speaker 1: things happen. Speaking of Texas, what's been going on there.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I mean, this is this is stuff that that that
- 11:48Speaker 1: makes your heartache and and having that balance between that's
- 11:52Speaker 1: the serious news, but also there's a you guys have fun.
- 11:56Speaker 1: It's it's it's and that is uh And maybe it's
- 11:59Speaker 1: somebody that works in media that maybe can appreciate a
- 12:02Speaker 1: little bit more. That is a real talent. That's a
- 12:04Speaker 1: real skill that you guys do. At twenty seven, it is.
- 12:07Speaker 3: It's a lot.
- 12:08Speaker 2: You're very right, I won't downplay that at all. But
- 12:10Speaker 2: like Jake said, these are stories that impact our community,
- 12:12Speaker 2: and there are stories that when I go home, I
- 12:15Speaker 2: still have to talk about my taxes and.
- 12:17Speaker 3: What I'm voting for in my community.
- 12:19Speaker 2: When we had tornadoes come down through cross Plains a
- 12:21Speaker 2: few years ago, my home was impacted to so those
- 12:24Speaker 2: little things that people are talking about at home, when
- 12:26Speaker 2: you're at the dinner table and you're laughing about what
- 12:29Speaker 2: happened at school, but also looking at school referendum choices,
- 12:33Speaker 2: all of that is in the table, and all the
- 12:34Speaker 2: newscasts it is.
- 12:35Speaker 1: It's a great day if you got one of those DVRs.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I have a little thing I record every morning, and
- 12:40Speaker 1: I want to get home first and I just catch
- 12:41Speaker 1: up on news, great data, set that up and again
- 12:44Speaker 1: Wake Up Wisconsin on Wkwchannel twenty seven. Kicks off four
- 12:47Speaker 1: thirty am, goes until seven, of course at eleven am
- 12:50Speaker 1: with the Wisconsin News. Now got the whole crew here
- 12:52Speaker 1: this morning. Guys. Thank you so much for joining us,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and have a great day. John, thank you, Yeah, Sean,
- 12:56Speaker 1: thank you. Take care. Guys. News comes your way next
- 12:58Speaker 1: right here on thirteen ten. Doub ib A
