- 2:57SPEAKER_01: The scent, life, life and scent, life and fragrance is so interconnected, and I think this episode is such a testament to that.

- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Hi guys, welcome back to Skincare Anarchy.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: I am so excited because this is a Fragrance Friday special, and I have with me the wonderful Caroline Fabrigus, who is the founder of Scent Fluence.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: I know you guys probably saw my videos about the line, about the you know, Aromaline, um, maybe on my socials because I'm obsessed.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: My whole home smells like a five-star resort.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Thanks to you, Caroline.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: So I'm so excited to be hosting you.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the show.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, thanks so much for having me.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: I so appreciate you um sharing our products with your audience.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: That was so kind of you.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: And we're super excited to to be connected.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I I really can't wait to learn all about the brand and you.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: And I I want to start there actually.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: I want to learn all about you and how you got into the the you know, the fragrance side of things, and and especially um this specifically, where it's really, you know, aroma therapy in a way, and and really brightening up a space, you know, the whole journey, if you could, if you know, walk us down memory lane.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: Oh wow, thank you.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: Well, it was um quite I, as I like to say, a uh legacy in a love affair is how I became involved with scent marketing.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: Um, I was actually in the beauty industry as an executive working with Clarence, very heavily focused in skincare as a background.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: I'd worked for Longcombe and Chanel and Prada, various companies over the years.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: And then um I had this wonderful German husband.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: We were married for 15 years.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: He was an advertising executive, and he believed in the power of scent as a way to communicate your brand message.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: And unfortunately, he passed away very unexpectedly at a young age, he was 51, and he left me this business.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: I didn't really know much about the business.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: Um, that's why I say it was a legacy, and really it was a love affair because I wanted to honor his legacy.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: And in fact, when I started to really look into the business and understand what it was all about, it uh struck me that it was something that I might really enjoy because it drew upon marketing and branding and understanding how to communicate a message and product development.
- 6:02SPEAKER_03: And so I started to learn.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: I thought a lot to learn.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: And um, we had one client, which was Hyatt Hotel.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: So I was able to keep that business going, and we still have a wonderful partnership with Hyatt today.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: And then um, I was actually brought to one hotel and given the opportunity to create a signature scent for them and created a whole process by which we would understand the brand and develop the scent.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: And who would have known then what one hotel has become today?
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: Um, it's become a really, really successful, beautiful brand.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: And the scent is really at the core of it.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: So we're just so delighted for that partnership.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: And then that really began this um this love affair uh into the business um to to build it and grow it.
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: And and just over time we've attracted lots of uh wonderful new partners and hospitality and uh in wellness and in real estate and in retail.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: And we've just been growing and growing and to really value all of our partners.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, it's it's so well deserved because I kid you not, you know, I've never I've always really actually, you know, loved diffusers.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: I've loved the idea of creating, you know, more intimacy in your own space that you're in, whether it's a large space, small, you know, whatever it may be, office, home.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: Um, I really have been one of those people that believes in the power of scent when it comes to just really lighting up a room, you know, and I and I really I've tried a lot of, you know, uh, what do you call it, diffusers, like I said.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: And when I tried your scents and when I tried the, you know, the samples you sent over, I immediately was obsessed.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was like a a connection was made, you know.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: And I I think for me, scent, that's the most powerful part about it, is that once you love a scent or an aroma, it just you fall in love and you stick to it and it just it immediately starts creating those memories, those happy moments and that feel good, you know what I mean, sensation overall.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: So I think the fact that you've captured that so beautifully, like, you know, um, I was gonna mention, like, my favorite right now that I've been using is the grapefruit uh oils, you know, that you sent, like the grapefruit scent.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: It's beautiful.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's perfect for me personally.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Like I love, you know, fresh scents, citrusy scents, and it's just a really nice balance.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: So, you know, to be able to create that um in something that's not, you know, as as common as like, for example, perfumery.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: To be able to create something like this on this level and quality is I think really, really spectacular.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: Thank you for your appreciation.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: And it really is not um, it's not easy.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: So the the grapefruit that you're referring to is actually a pink grapefruit, and it's really an amazing blend.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: So it um gives you the the grapefruit inspiration, but it has this amazing blend of other ingredients that give you that sparkling quality.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: So, yes, you want that fresh smell, but you want it to have, as you're saying, the emotion, the emotion that's attached to it, that sparkling quality, that freshness.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: And um, we're so really, really fortunate that we have clients who really love the scents and they actually uh consider them to be sometimes the best part of the brand.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: And we have um their guests uh who actually feel that uh the scents are almost endemic to the experience.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: Um, one thing is so linked to the other.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: And speaking of memory, it really does um inspire memory.
- 9:30SPEAKER_03: So if you had a wonderful stay at a hotel or a great experience at a spa, you know, the ability to take that home with you and then recreate it through scent is super powerful.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: And you know, I couldn't agree more.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: I think it's it's so understated these days because we like I said, you know, when we think about the category of scent and fragrance, and this is honestly, Caroline, this is a big reason why I went into this category for the show.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: You know, I wanted us to expand into this because it's such an integral part of what I consider to be inner beauty, you know, whatever you want to call it, peace, inner peace, you know, mindset, mindfulness, because it's very powerful.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: You know, there's a lot of power in scent, whether that's at a spa, you know, you go to a your favorite spa or your favorite facialist, right?
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: And then you lay down and you have a whole experience.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: But what do you take away from that?
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: You're gonna take away obviously the the great experience of the person, but then that scent is gonna bring you back because every time you go back into that place, you're gonna remember like, oh my God, I loved my experience last time.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: I loved what everything that happened last time, you know.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: So that's very, very powerful.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: It it's something that I think um doesn't just drive consumers to purchase products, it creates um a relationship with consumers.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: So that's really where I get very drawn into your brand because you know, you're providing, I think, an asset for your clients that I uh, you know, you can't really put a number on it, right?
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: It's like if somebody falls in love with the the scent of a room or the scent of an entire resort or a hotel, they're gonna want to always stay there.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: You know, it's gonna make them feel at home, it's gonna make them feel comfortable and and taken care of.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: And that is so powerful.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: In fact, the way that we named the uh the brand Scent Fluence was to really recognize that that influencing power of scent to really influence your life, your mindset, your mood, your family.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: And of course, a lot of our work is done with businesses.
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: And uh this has been uh such a new trend towards businesses really expressing themselves in scent.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: When my late husband started the company, it was a very new idea, but now it's becoming mainstream.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: When you walk into these environments, you're seeing the beautiful decor, you might hear music, you'll see a beautiful dressed person, but then you'll also get the sense of smell, which really wraps the entire experience together in a very cool way.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: I 100% agree.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: And I actually think I was making a comment on an earlier episode about how, you know, back when I was like, I think 17, you know, very young.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: It was like just starting college.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: I was very much into these like metaphysical stores that you see, you know, um a lot a lot of times in many cities because they always had the aroma oils.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: They always had the essential oil blends and stuff.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: And at that time, unfortunately, you know, they weren't available as readily, you know, you didn't see them going into your typical like Target or you know, Walmart stores.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: You you saw them in very specific places.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: And I just remember even being a kid and thinking, you know, I'm not really into the tarot card ratings and stuff, but what I am into is the smell of this entire store.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: You know, I would walk into those places and I would be like, oh my gosh, I just want to stay here because the smell is so soothing and so calming.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: And, you know, um, it really intrigued me in terms of how aroma, um, when it comes to essential oils, you know, how it's really formulated.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: And I would love for you to actually talk to us about that because you're taking this to a whole new level, you know what I mean, in terms of luxury and just um how your process works in terms of crafting a scent.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Um, I've talked to, you know, perfume brands, you know, for example, and of course their process is very different, but I'd love to get to, you know, really get to know you you guys' process.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow, that's such a great question and one of my favorite subjects because when we create signature scents for brands, uh we actually have to take into account the brand itself, its DNA, its philosophy, its ethos, its voice, its spirit, uh, what the goals of the company are.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: And um, with them we get the great opportunity to understand that and work with these master perfumers to decipher that through the olfactory lens into a signature scent that is completely original, uh, goes with the vibrations of the brands, with the surroundings, with the language, with the lighting, with the textures, and it's such an incredible adventure.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: And it's one of my favorite things to do.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: And just over time, I think we've really developed an expertise and a skill.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're also lucky to work with some of the largest fragrance houses in the world that have sensory tools, so they're actually able to even validate some of the selections that are made against certain keywords and colors.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: So it's a really fascinating process.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: And then I think what is very differentiating is that you know, while we do love candles and re-diffuse them, we certainly make a lot of them for our clients.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: Our uh true art is being able to diffuse the scent invisibly in a way that you can enjoy it and smell it and you know just relish in it, but you don't see it and you don't hear it.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: It's like this invisible force that um it's it's just such an unusual way to experience uh scent.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: And this is what's got me very excited.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: And I know that we were able to share with you some of our new diffusers that are great for homes.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: Uh they're tabletop, they're USB powered.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: So um, unlike a candle, you don't have to remember to blow it out.
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: Again, we love candles, but sometimes when you are home for long periods of time, if you have a family around you, if you have pets, uh it's nice to just have the convenience of having a an invisible diffuser that you don't have to remember to blow out.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: And we bring that commercial professional grade thinking to how we diffuse.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: Um, and and that's uh I think a very different uh part of what we offer.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: And you know, I really love that they're um not water-based.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: That's one of my favorite parts about it, is because, you know, I kid you not, I was doing research a long time ago and I was talking to somebody about, you know, how everybody was using the water-based diffusers, right?
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: There was a whole movement, I feel like, you know, it was a surge of people just talking about diffusers at one point.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: I don't remember the exact year and month, but I do remember seeing it a lot more on my social media.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: And I at that time I decided, you know, let me go into the literature a little bit and talk about, you know, or just learn about how scents work, you know, in terms of and I actually found literature that said that what that that those aren't the best options for you, you know, because that water, you're inhaling water droplets, you know what I mean, at the end of the day.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: So it's not the most sanitary route to take, I think, when it comes to diffusing um aroma into your environment.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: I definitely love the innovation that you guys have created here with your diffusers because, like you said, you know, it's it's an invisible way to really brighten up the space, but it also like I love that they're not water-based.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: And I love that they're not, you know, um excessively putting something into your environment that is going to sit there or make it, you know, just just more stuff that we're inhaling is really what I'm trying to say.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: You know, like you know, listen, coming out of the commercial professional space and then bringing this art and science to the consumer, it it really has been a different experience.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: You know, in the professional space, we're not able to use uh water uh because it would be hard to keep refilling it and keeping it fresh.
- 17:09SPEAKER_03: We're not able to use um heat because we need everything to be very safe.
- 17:14SPEAKER_03: So our this is how the uh the art has evolved um of cold mist.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: And it's not something that people had readily uh, you know, really seen as available to them in their homes.
- 17:25SPEAKER_03: And so this is something very new when we're now able to offer this on our website or in our studio, uh New York uh studio that we have.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: And people come in and they're fascinated.
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: They're like, okay, well, where do I put the water?
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: I'm like, okay, well, no need for water.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: You just basically take our scent oils from our library.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: We have a lovely library of over 65 cents uh in our space, and then of course we have our website as well.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: And these oils are pre-diluted, so they are going right into your diffuser, and they are not needing to be diluted, and then you get a uh what we call a cold mist, which is what's invisible.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: So it's also very nice because you don't have to worry about an accumulation on your furnishings, you don't have to worry about surface oils landing on your furniture, and it's just very clean and um and just very we would say breathable, and that's what makes it so good in the commercial space.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: You don't want in a commercial space to be seeing mists because it could send a different kind of a cue.
- 18:24SPEAKER_03: Um so you know, bringing this to people's homes has been a very new part of the uh the business that we're venturing into, and and so far it's been well received.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I mean I I think that that's an excellent point that you made.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: You know, I think there's a lot of um nuances to the old style of diffusing, you know, like you mentioned a few of them, and I I've definitely dealt with them myself, you know, as a consumer, you know, even I can't imagine how it would be more difficult on a larger scale, you know, for a hotel, for example, to really upkeep that kind of um, you know, system.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: So I really, really love what you've done.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: And, you know, the size, actually, you know, for everyone listening, if you go onto the website and you check out the brand and especially the diffusers, I really, really urge you guys to just pick one up because they're so lovely in the sense of they're they're perfect for any room.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: You know, if if you're like just want something for your bedroom or you want something for maybe like a little nook or like a corner or wherever it is that you sit down and just have that me moment, you know, especially for all of our listeners, because we all love self-care.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: We're all about, you know, that taking that moment in our day and and really kind of unwinding.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, you just turn on your diffuser, it's so small that you barely notice it in any space.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I really love that the design is like that, Caroline, because it's, you know, it's it's beautiful to have like, you know, something that you're using for, you know, aroma to be a piece that's like, you know, um decorative that's wonderful.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: But I really like and appreciate when things blend in to the things already around me, you know, and and I think diffuser, um, just the way they're made and the their uh what do you call it?
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: Uh the engineering and the and the architecture of the actual like size and the way they are, it's a perfect fit for someone like me because you just like you said, it's USB, you know, charged, you put it wherever you want to put it and then forget about it.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: It's gonna keep cycling, it's gonna keep cycling and going.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: And that's that's really what you want.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: You don't want something that you have to worry about, you know.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Right, you want to you wanna, what did they say?
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: Set set it and forget it, right?
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: Set it and forget it.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: Set and forget it as long as you re-refill it, you know, especially with the smaller space diffusers.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: And and we feel so fortunate to have been able to create these diffusers because in the professional space, the diffusers, let's face it, they're rather large, they're not that attractive.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: They don't need to be because half the time they're going into the air conditioning system, or they're going to be concealed behind something.
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: But in your home, you want something attractive.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: So we were able to create and develop these really lovely diffusers.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: Um, I think we sent you an assortment of different types of diffusers.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: We have a lovely chrome finish.
- 21:05SPEAKER_03: It almost looks a little bit like a speaker.
- 21:08SPEAKER_03: Uh comes in silver and gold and lilac and forest green and beautiful colors.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: And then we have our sleek collection, which is um really uh just a little bit smaller, but um, it has uh again a wonderful array of colors and it's discrete and very easy to replenish.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: You just pop the little bottle up from the bottom, refill with the oil of your choice.
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: And the nice thing is you can even interchange oils.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: Again, we love we love candles, don't get me wrong.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: We sell them, we make them, but you know, when you have a candle, you burn it all the way through to the end and you're sort of with that one scent for a while.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: Of course, you can buy multiple candles.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: With the diffusers, you can actually pour the oil back into the original bottle, clean with a little alcohol, and then pour in a new oil and every day have a different experience if you'd like it.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: So that makes uh the diffusers also very versatile, very customizable.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: And uh, as you said, they're they're relatively easy.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: To use.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: There's not a lot of programming that goes on.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: You charge it up, press the on button, and then you can moderate whether you want light, medium, or more in terms of your scenting.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: And I think we also shared with you our little USB stick.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: We have this really lovely item, perfect for holiday gift giving, wonderful for anybody's car.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: And it's hard to do scent in your car, actually, right?
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: Hard to have something that is going to not be too strong, but also at the same time something that will be long-lasting.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: So the little USB stick is great with the little pads, and you can put the oil on the pad and put that into the USB port in your car, and it gives a lovely small space of scenting, or maybe even if you're it's your computer.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: So we like to celebrate new new ways of delivering scent.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: And you know, we've been able to find these wonderful alternative methods for doing it.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: And then of course creating the scents in a way in the right dilution, in the right preparation.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: And that was a whole learning for me as well.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, who knew that when you went to make an ambient scent, it had to be diluted in a very specific technical way versus when you are making a candle, the same scent has to be treated and prepared differently again.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: So this has been a huge learning curve for me.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: Again, I was a skincare executive for so many years.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: I've had to learn a lot about uh fragrance development, fragrance creation, fragrance modification, uh diffusion, candle making, read diffusers.
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: Um, and I have to say, I've had so much support from our fragrance houses and our partners.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: I'm just so grateful for everybody's help to help us, you know, get where get where we are and where we're going today.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: I really love that.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: I love that you were very open to learning.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: You know, I think that's something that a lot of entrepreneurs struggle with is that shifting from one space to another.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: It's like it's very difficult for some people.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: So I really love that you mentioned the learning aspect because you know, I I read an article, I think it was yesterday, about candles.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: And it's funny we're talking about them because I'm also a huge candle lover.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Don't get me wrong, huge lover of candles.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: But I really despise when I run out of my candles.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: Like when I run out of my favorite candle, and then I have to go and go through the process of reordering it and then get waiting for it to be shipped to me or whatever the process is, it drives me nuts because I'm very, like I said, like I'm very much into scent.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: I think for me, as personally speaking, like I either something can, it's gonna hit or it's gonna miss.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: So for me, fragrance plays a huge role in my self-care rituals every day, um, whether it's both in the morning and in the evening.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: You know, I I really, really believe in the power of setting a mood, you know, setting a tone for whatever it is you're trying to accomplish.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: And if that's self-care, like I want my things available to me right there when I need them.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: And I really believe, you know, I referenced that article because the article was saying that, oh, you know, candles might be the next luxury thing that people are collecting.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: And I was like, well, I don't think you should do that, you know.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: I think you should, you know, we need to stop making things these like commodities and really come back to the essence of why we like candles, right?
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: It's the idea is scent.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: So if you really are looking for just a great scent, right, that's going to be available to you at all times, whenever you need it.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: I personally believe that this route is better, you know, in terms of going in this route, because you know, with the diffuser, I know I press a button and it's there.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: And it takes a long time for even one vial of the aroma to run out.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: You know, it's gonna diffuse for days before you need to change it out.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it's there, like the changeability, and you can, you know, switch them out.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: It's there, but it's not as you know, cumbersome as like finding the candle and then burning the candle and then running out and refilling, you know, that that whole process is just annoying, you know, as a consumer.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean each to their own, yeah.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: And then so we we have um the opportunity with our clients to do the ambient diffusion and offer that to the consumer.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: But there are plenty of people that do love the ambiance of candles, so we get the chance to make a whole candle assortment, and then we get a some people, you know, like it prefer a reed diffuser.
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: They don't want a piece of equipment, they just like their reed diffuser.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: Um, and then you know, off into other areas as well, like room spray.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: You know, it's amazing to me how popular room spray is.
- 26:26SPEAKER_03: Sometimes people just want uh yeah, it's very popular.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: They want a little bit of a quick lightening of the air, maybe from a cooking or a cigarette or something, an unpleasant odor.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: They want to have a quick burst of freshness.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: And a room spray is great for that.
- 26:38SPEAKER_03: So I think that the name of the game is really trying to cater to everybody's individual tastes and needs, as always.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: Um, but then sometimes people like to do a multiple of things.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: They'll have a diffuser in one room, but they'll have a candle in the other room for some ambiance, you know.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: And that's why it's been great to work with our partners to actually develop these whole lines of products for them.
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: You know, when I inherited the business, it was really that one client, Hyatt Hotels, such a value client, still important to us today.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: And it was all about a scent machine and a replenishable Hyatt Zen oil.
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: But since we've started to grow, there's such demand for the crossover from Ambient into all these other scent extensions and other products.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: We've actually developed an entire private label division to accommodate this.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: And now we're developing this whole D2C division and helping our brands to give access to their guests on a really easy format through the website and through our studio.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: So there's an entire business model that's evolved here.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: It's taken some time.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: I wish I could say there is such a thing as an overnight success.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: I if anyone has uh an example of that, I'd love to learn more about a 10-year overnight success.
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: But I really um stayed the course, and those that that know me know I've been at this a very long time.
- 27:52SPEAKER_03: But again, it was a it was a legacy and it and it was a love affair, and I just couldn't step away.
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: There was something in me that told me to keep going.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: And of course, I developed a great passion for this work because I think it's very needed and very different.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: And we're um we're in a great spot to to really take a next step and scale on.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: I think I lost you.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm here.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: Can you hear me?
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Okay, I can hear you now.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, no, you're actually right though.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: No, I I think that, you know, I'm really glad that you stayed with it.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: I'm really glad because honestly, the thing is, you know, I was gonna I was gonna actually mention to you that, you know, I I agree with you.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: I think that everything that is related to scent and fragrance has its place, agreed.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: I just feel that when we make options um more available and also more like consumer friendly, like that is something that I really applaud and I really uh champion because I I I really don't think that we don't we don't need to make everything so complicated, is what I'm trying to say in a nutshell.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: And I think that with the products I've tried that are, you know, that were you sent over to me, the products that I've experienced, I mean, it's all it's been a recurring theme of just ease, ease of use, right?
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: And that's something as a consumer for me, it's very important for me to have that because, you know, we all have very busy lifestyles, you know, we are all running around trying to get our, you know, days accomplished, our tasks accomplished.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: And nobody has that extra time to be fiddling around with, you know, technology or like wonky tech.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: And I think that the fact that you've you've done that and it in such a beautiful, effortless way is something that also draws me in very much as a consumer, as somebody that would repurchase, right?
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Because I I mean, the more and more I get I start to understand um the you know, the beauty industry, the wellness industries, you know, I realizing that consumers, what drives them to come back?
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: Well, obviously it's the quality, but then it's also the ease of use and ease of like relationship formation with that product.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: And I think you've done that, you know, innately you've done that with your brand because it's it's very easy for me.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: I'm hooked, you know.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean, just after I smelled the fragrances, after I used the diffuser, I'm hooked.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: This is what I use now.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: You know, it has replaced the other options that I had in my cabinet that I am not ever going to use again.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: So it's very kind of you.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: It's the truth.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: It's the truth.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, and I think that that's that's where I really get excited about fragrance and scent because, like I said, it's that relationship that's formed with a consumer.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: And it's so, you know, I just find it to be intriguing that you really stuck to it and that you've you've created it the way you have.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: Now, I want to comment on the on the part that you said about the private label because I think that's such a marvelous, such a brilliant thing to do because I kid you not, there have been so many times where I've gone into a spa or a hotel or somewhere really nice, and I really like the way it smells.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: And it's like, how lovely would it be if you could pick up their scent, you know what I mean, in their little gift shop or something and just take that home with you to give you a reminder, you know, like, oh, I love this scent.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: I love the way it feels.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: So I think it's a really cool thing that you're, you know, you're catering to these kind of businesses because now that COVID has kind of, you know, uh died down a little bit, although, you know, as as a medical practitioner, I will say it really hasn't.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: We're still dealing with it.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: So, but um, you know, we are able to go out now.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: So now that people are actually moving around and going out, they're going to be going to the places that they love the most.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: And what better way to bring that home with you?
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: And it's like we have a greater appreciation of being able to go into, you know, stores or or spas or you know, clinics or wherever it is we want to go.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: And and by doing that, I think we're also observing more, you know, overall as a population.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, the way I hear people talk about things now on social media is very different than it was uh pre-COVID days, you know what I mean?
- 31:51SPEAKER_03: So it's yes, agree, agree, definitely.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: And I I think it's you know, we we hear it all the time, but people are just what's so important now is the experience.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: We have such an appreciation for what it is to be out in an environment now and having an experience after being locked down.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: Who would have imagined?
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: Who would have imagined?
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: So having these experiences is is so important and sent in the environment is a very important part of reinforcing a positive experience, and we see it over and over again how it can be so touching and so influencing.
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: And speaking of the pandemic, you know, in the middle of the pandemic, all of our business to business, the hotels, the real estate, the retail stores, they they closed.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: And so I decided that I would take a bold move.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: And I opened up in the village of Scoresdale where I live, uh, a studio.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: I opened up a retail-facing studio, and I didn't know what on earth would happen.
- 32:41SPEAKER_03: I was very lucky to get a short-term lease.
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: I staged it as a pop-up and moved in and took a few weeks to decorate it and popped it up on Halloween Day on 2020.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: So we're two years into it.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: And without much advertising on a on a side street, a little bit out of the way, in the middle of a pandemic, with people wearing musks, visiting a scent store.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: If I could only tell you what happened that November and December, uh, the amount of transactions and business people that came in evaluating the fragrance through their mask.
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: They didn't have to touch anything.
- 33:14SPEAKER_03: I could hold a battery-operated diffuser up to the mask at an arm's length social distance, right through their mask, they could smell it.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: And everybody was home.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: And you said this earlier during the pandemic, everybody really discovered scent because it can't became a sensory cue of how to live their day.
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: They wanted something in the morning, something in the evening when it was time to wind down.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: And so this little 500 square foot studio that we opened in Scarsdale Village, it was such an incredibly pleasant surprise that people came in.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: And I'll tell you today, speaking of you know, the repeat client and the loyalty and finding something you love and coming back for it time and time again, over 50% of our clients at the Simplement studio are repeat clients.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, we're just so so grateful.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: I'm always there on Saturdays, you know, entrepreneur, we work six and seven days a week.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: Don't know how to get around that.
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: Anyone got a good idea?
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: Let me know.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: But I love actually, I love actually being in there on Saturdays.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: I get to meet all these amazing friends and neighbors and people and just people walking by.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: We put a scent diffuser outside the door, and you can smell we had the the uh apple orchard season going in September.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: Now we turned everything into a pumpkin patch.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: We've got a beautiful vanilla scent lofting through the Scarsdale village.
- 34:25SPEAKER_03: So people are actually following their nose and coming in and finding us and going, What are you doing here?
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: And we get an opportunity then to talk about our core business and our brands and how we create these incredible signature scents and how we're bringing that art and science to our community.
- 34:40SPEAKER_03: So it is, you know, it's growing.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: Um, it it always uh, as we know, with these businesses takes time, but it's starting to catch on, and people are um, as you are, enjoying the art and science and then coming back for more.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: And I have to say, I really loved that you, when you gave me your list of selections, you you selected our yoga nidra.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: Um and uh I discovered yoga nidra during the pandemic, during um a yoga session, a virtual yoga session, and the yoga teacher said, Let's do a yoga nidra.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: And I thought to myself, what's that?
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: So we went into this yoga nidra meditation, and it was in that meditation that it came to me that I wanted to do a line of yoga sense.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: So I trademarked the names Yoga Nidra, child's pose, which is my favorite pose because you get to lay down, and tree pose.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: And I trademarked those three names and turned them into ambient scent, and we're turning them into candles and yoga matness.
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: And so the pandemic, you know, as devastating as it was for all of us, I think in some ways it um inspired us to think differently, go further, dig deep, and um find new ways to express ourselves.
- 35:46SPEAKER_03: And at least for me, it did have some positive outcomes, um, you know, with the launch of the studio, the launch of the yoga sense, and giving me a chance to touch the consumer directly, which is really my background.
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: So I'm I'm really feeling very optimistic about what the future will bring.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: And yes, the yoga Nidra sense is extremely valuable to me because I actually grew up doing yoga.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: You know, being Indian is something it's in my heritage, it's part of, you know, it's just part of my culture in the sense of not just being Indian, but my household.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: Like my mother grew up teaching me yoga, you know, we uh every day, like we would do yoga together.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, to be able to have a scent to go with it, like my meditation practice, you know, I'm very, very much into meditation.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: I meditate every single day, multiple times a day.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: I'm into yoga, I do yoga every day.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: Like it's something that's for me personally, uh it's a must-have, you know, and I think that scent and aroma and this creating this ambiance, it goes hand in hand with your practice because the whole idea of meditation and yoga is to focus on your breath and to focus and allow that focus to then bring you into a moment.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: And I think with the added aspect of a scent, it just amplifies that, you know, it makes it easier for you to do that, it makes it more um, I I guess just more user-friendly, you could say it makes meditation more user-friendly.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean it really does.
- 37:16unknown: Yeah.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: I'm so glad, I'm so glad you you said that.
- 37:19SPEAKER_03: Uh, because I, you know, I do continue to do yoga.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: And when you're in that tree pose, it's not easy to hold that pose.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: So if you can have this grounding fragrance that makes you feel like you're rooted, but you know, then again, there's those times when you don't have time to meditate or you don't have time to literally drop down into a child's pose, right?
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: Even though you wish you could.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: Maybe it's like in an afternoon, you're trying to finish a report.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: Uh, maybe you're like re-studying something and you wish you could be in a tree pose, but you can't.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: But if you put the tree pose scent on, it gives you that visceral experience as if you were in a tree pose.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: And that's what I was going for here.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: I wanted to create that experience as we do with the businesses.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: We recreate a brand in the air, we become their logo in the air.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: So with the yoga series, I wanted to create this, these moments.
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: Um, even if you couldn't actually be meditating, that you could have that feeling through the scent that maybe you were just that little bit more relaxed or a little bit more grounded.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: So that was one of my goals in doing that too.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's brilliant.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: I think that's brilliant.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: I think there's definitely, you know, how they say there's muscle memory that applies to everything, you know.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: When you you made a really great point.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: When you, if you're doing yoga and you're doing meditation and you're say you're using one scent, right?
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: And then you, for example, you get in the car, you have that same scent on your USB portable device that um Carolyn was mentioning earlier, you will immediately, your brain is wired that way.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: It's you know, it's over time our brain wires itself to become familiar with our routines and become familiar with those routines and those moments as we experience them outside of that normal environment.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: So it'll bring you back into that feeling place, right?
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: So I always tell people, you know, meditation is not something you have to do for 20 minutes.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: You meditation in my mind is taking a moment and just breathing in.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: And I think if a scent can remind you of your practice and if it can remind you of the times when you do have the time to do a 20, 30 minute meditation, it'll make you just in that moment close your eyes for a second, breathe in, just recenter yourself.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: That's priceless.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: Like I think that is so, so important, especially in the world we live in now.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: And especially now, you know, we're out of COVID.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: So we're really busy.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: You know, everyone's really busy.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: And so taking those moments out of your day, it's so important.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: And if a scent can help you and remind you to do that, hey, I'm on board.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, I think that's so, so valuable and therapeutic.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: So I love, I love what you've done with the yoga series.
- 39:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, thank you.
- 39:56SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 39:56SPEAKER_03: Well, we're getting ready to finish up our candles and move into our yoga mat wellness mist room spray.
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: And I'll be sure to send those off to you when they're when they're done.
- 40:04SPEAKER_03: And our business to business is is growing beautifully, and not because we're doing a lot of marketing, uh, still as a smaller company, but just organic growth through people discovering the sense in the spaces, buying the products, seeing our company name on the bottom label, and coming to us for the expertise uh that we've, you know, we've been able to build over the years through just having a lot of experience and a lot of opportunities to trial and error and grow.
- 40:31SPEAKER_03: And um yeah, I so appreciate you and and what you do for our industry.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: And thank you for reviewing my products, Ascent Fluence, and um and for all your feedback.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: No, thank you, and thank you for coming on the show.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: I'm a huge fan, and for everyone listening, I will be tagging everything in the concept art for this episode.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: I really urge you guys, you know, you have to check out the brand, you have to experience it for yourself to know what I've been raving about this whole time.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's really, really a new way of um, you know, just a new way to think about what you do to create that space for yourself in self-care.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: You know, it really is a part of that.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: And I think that Scent Fluence is definitely leading the way, you know, in this area.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna lie.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: I I like I said, I love candles.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: Don't get me wrong.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: I love and Carolyn, I'm probably gonna buy a few of your candles, you know.
