- 0:00Speaker 1: Section twenty eight of the Heart of the New Thought
- 0:04Speaker 1: by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. This LibriVox recording is in the
- 0:09Speaker 1: public domain. The breath a man reproved me for my
- 0:16Speaker 1: interest in New Thought creeds. The old religion I learned
- 0:21Speaker 1: at my mother's knee is good enough for me, he said,
- 0:27Speaker 1: it is good enough for anybody. Yet this man's mother
- 0:33Speaker 1: had always enjoyed poor health, as the old lady expressed it,
- 0:39Speaker 1: and the man himself was forever talking of his diseases,
- 0:44Speaker 1: his ill luck, his poverty, which he said he had
- 0:48Speaker 1: been enabled to endure only through the sustaining power of
- 0:52Speaker 1: the religion learned at his mother's knee. It would be
- 0:58Speaker 1: difficult to convince the man that had his mother taught
- 1:02Speaker 1: him the creed of the New religion, he could have
- 1:05Speaker 1: changed all these unfortunate conditions. Lifelong ill health would have
- 1:12Speaker 1: been impossible for his mother or for him. The old
- 1:17Speaker 1: fashioned religion allowed, and still allows, a human being to
- 1:22Speaker 1: breathe like a canary bird. Little children go to Sunday
- 1:27Speaker 1: School all their young lives and grow up to be
- 1:31Speaker 1: devote church members, and never hear one word about the
- 1:37Speaker 1: importance of deep breathing. Possibly you may think breathing lessons
- 1:44Speaker 1: belong to physical culture and have no place in religious teachings.
- 1:50Speaker 1: There is where you are. In order to develop your
- 1:54Speaker 1: whole being, you must learn how to control body and
- 1:59Speaker 1: mind through the spirit. Thousands of years ago, men who
- 2:05Speaker 1: gave their entire lives to the study of these things
- 2:09Speaker 1: learned the great importance of deep breathing as an aid
- 2:14Speaker 1: to religious meditation. By this practice, sysematically observed, the body
- 2:21Speaker 1: is calmed, the mind is brought into subjection, and the
- 2:26Speaker 1: spirit rises into control, and in addition, absolute health is achieved.
- 2:34Speaker 1: A large portion of our physical ailments result from unused
- 2:39Speaker 1: lung cells and consequent imperfect circulation of the blood. Fill
- 2:46Speaker 1: the lungs. Full every cell with fresh air two or
- 2:52Speaker 1: three times daily, and do not overload the digestive organs,
- 2:58Speaker 1: and sickness will fly away to the dark regions where
- 3:03Speaker 1: it belongs. At least ten minutes morning and night should
- 3:09Speaker 1: be given to the breathing exercises. Sit upright in a
- 3:15Speaker 1: comfortable chair alone, facing the east in the morning and
- 3:20Speaker 1: the west at night. Because great magnetic force comes from
- 3:25Speaker 1: the direction of the sun, Have a window or a
- 3:30Speaker 1: door opening to the outer air. Place your hands lightly
- 3:36Speaker 1: on your knees and close your eyes and mouth. Leave
- 3:41Speaker 1: your spine free, not touching the chair where no compressing
- 3:46Speaker 1: garments or bands. Inflate the chest and abdominal regions. As
- 3:54Speaker 1: you inhale, deep breaths through the nostrils while counting seven,
- 3:59Speaker 1: slowly exhale while you count seven. Repeat this exercise seven times.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Think as you inhale of whatever qualities you would like
- 4:13Speaker 1: to possess, and believe that you are inhaling them. Select
- 4:18Speaker 1: seven qualities love, health, wisdom, usefulness, power to do good success.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Opulence will cover the average human desires. The very unworldly
- 4:35Speaker 1: will substitute spiritual knowledge for opulence. Fill your mind with
- 4:41Speaker 1: the idea that you are drawing in these qualities with
- 4:44Speaker 1: your breasts and exhaling all that is weak or unworthy.
- 4:51Speaker 1: After a few moments, you will be conscious of a
- 4:54Speaker 1: security and peace, new and uplifting. And after a few
- 5:01Speaker 1: weeks of a steady, persistent practice of these exercises, you
- 5:06Speaker 1: will find life growing more beautiful to you, and your
- 5:10Speaker 1: strength will be increased tenfold, both physically and spiritually. End
- 5:18Speaker 1: of section twenty eight.
