- 0:03Speaker 1: Welcome to CP one on one how to Grocery Shop.
- 0:05Speaker 1: We love a good grocery shopping session, but we totally
- 0:08Speaker 1: get that it can be annoying to do. We're going
- 0:10Speaker 1: to break it down so this chour can be an
- 0:12Speaker 1: easy part.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Of your week. Today we're getting into the different grocery
- 0:15Speaker 2: stores and slow how to get there, and tips and
- 0:17Speaker 2: tricks with budgeting and cooking. Cal Poly's in session students
- 0:24Speaker 2: swarm through campus and file in and out of classes.
- 0:26Speaker 2: You're thinking about the chapter reading they have tonight, their
- 0:29Speaker 2: next class, their new dorm, their senior project, how.
- 0:31Speaker 3: To get to the gym, what's for dinner tonight?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Where's in yours bathroom? Kate and I know things can
- 0:35Speaker 2: get a bit chaotic as a student navigating the ins
- 0:38Speaker 2: and outs of college life.
- 0:40Speaker 1: At cal Poly, we focus on learning by doing, but
- 0:42Speaker 1: sometimes you don't know what to do well. Emma and
- 0:45Speaker 1: I are here to answer your who, what, when, where, why,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and how's here? On CP one oh one Learned by Listening,
- 0:52Speaker 1: presented by KCPR ninety one point three.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Hi Mustang. I'm Emma Hughes, a third year English student.
- 0:57Speaker 1: And I'm Kate Lopensky, a third year journalism state here
- 1:00Speaker 1: at cal Poly, and we're here to share our tell
- 1:02Speaker 1: all guide on how to survive and thrive at cal
- 1:05Speaker 1: Poly San Luis Obispo.
- 1:06Speaker 2: So grab a notebook. You may want to write this down.
- 1:15Speaker 2: So before we give our tell all guide to grocery shopping,
- 1:20Speaker 2: we actually took to the streets and asked you guys
- 1:23Speaker 2: what your favorite grocery store was and how many grocery
- 1:27Speaker 2: stores you can name in the Slow area. How many
- 1:29Speaker 2: grocery stores and Slow can you name? Lessons, Trader Joe's, Sprouts,
- 1:37Speaker 2: Food for Less, uh, Vaughn's and Ralph's, Whole Foods, Costco,
- 1:45Speaker 2: California Fresh, Smart and Final write aid that's probably it. Okay,
- 1:51Speaker 2: Now that we've heard from you guys, we thought we'd
- 1:54Speaker 2: give you a glimpse into Slow's grocery stores and where
- 1:58Speaker 2: to find them.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Yeah, let's split it up. Amas.
- 2:00Speaker 1: So you had the idea of talking about some easy,
- 2:03Speaker 1: accessible on campus options, so get into it.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah, so we kind of touched on this in our
- 2:08Speaker 2: previous episode how to Dine on Campus. Definitely check that out.
- 2:11Speaker 2: But here on campus we actually have the Campus market,
- 2:15Speaker 2: the market under Vista Grande, and the UU market as well.
- 2:19Speaker 2: As the food pantry, so there's lots of different locations
- 2:23Speaker 2: that you can check out for a quick, easy snack
- 2:26Speaker 2: to grab for some basic essentials to keep in your
- 2:29Speaker 2: dorm room. This is definitely a great option for first
- 2:32Speaker 2: year students, especially because you can use your dining dollars
- 2:36Speaker 2: at each location.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Even if you're a student who finds themselves to be
- 2:40Speaker 1: on campus pretty often.
- 2:41Speaker 3: This is also a.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Great idea too, because I totally get that packing a
- 2:46Speaker 1: lunch can be the most annoying thing ever, So definitely
- 2:50Speaker 1: if you're able to check these places out because they
- 2:53Speaker 1: just have quick, easy, grab and go options that will
- 2:56Speaker 1: totally make your life easier. Okay, so now let's talk
- 2:58Speaker 1: about some off camp this option. Starting off with the
- 3:01Speaker 1: most close stores.
- 3:04Speaker 2: So within walking distance from campus, we have a rite Aid,
- 3:09Speaker 2: a Lascense, a cow Fresh.
- 3:11Speaker 3: And even a Smart and Final.
- 3:13Speaker 2: So these stores are great options for just a quick
- 3:16Speaker 2: and easy grab if you're looking for some basic essentials
- 3:20Speaker 2: that will get you through the week, one last final push,
- 3:23Speaker 2: you know, just power through with those stores.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So rite Aid doesn't have any produce, so obviously that's
- 3:30Speaker 1: more for I don't know, if you just need something
- 3:33Speaker 1: like a toothbrush or.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Or ice cream, because the ice cream like that is
- 3:38Speaker 2: a good go to.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Okay, See, I'm lactose intolerance, so like, I don't know
- 3:41Speaker 1: how to consider it.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I could never I would I never could ever be
- 3:45Speaker 2: lactose intolerant.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Not that it was a choice, but easier than you think, honestly.
- 3:50Speaker 1: So license is so bougie, it's so fancy.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Okay, that's kind of the impression I got.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Yeah, it's expensive. I rarely go there.
- 3:59Speaker 1: If you need to go there to pick up something
- 4:01Speaker 1: really quickly, totally get it. But if you're making a
- 4:05Speaker 1: habit shopping here and you're able to get all of
- 4:07Speaker 1: your groceries from here, that is such a flex Yeah,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and I love you. That's incredible.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Okay.
- 4:12Speaker 1: So let's go into the ones that are further away. Now,
- 4:16Speaker 1: we love Sprouts, Vaughn's Ralphs, those are all great options.
- 4:21Speaker 2: These are like your most basic grocery stores. You know,
- 4:24Speaker 2: anything you could possibly want, you can find them there.
- 4:27Speaker 2: These are a little further away from campus, so some
- 4:30Speaker 2: driving or bus riding might be necessary, but definitely a great,
- 4:36Speaker 2: great grocery store.
- 4:38Speaker 1: We're going to talk a little bit about the different
- 4:40Speaker 1: transportation options, especially if you are a freshman and you
- 4:43Speaker 1: don't have your car and you want to get to
- 4:45Speaker 1: one of these spots. We'll get into that a little
- 4:47Speaker 1: bit later. But and then further away, we have Costco
- 4:51Speaker 1: and Trader Joe's. These are our favorites, so we had
- 4:54Speaker 1: to include them.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:55Speaker 2: So I am a Costco member, like so proud of
- 4:59Speaker 2: that fact. I wear it like a badge of honor.
- 5:02Speaker 1: You even have your Costco coffee cup?
- 5:04Speaker 2: Yeah, right next, I literally have my Costco Tumblr that
- 5:07Speaker 2: I got when I became a Costco member. It was
- 5:09Speaker 2: a little freebe I just like am die hard. I
- 5:12Speaker 2: think I'm like an executive member.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, so not.
- 5:16Speaker 1: To plex not to be like that girl, but yeah,
- 5:19Speaker 1: see I'm the one who uses her roommate's membership.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Okay period, so not really.
- 5:25Speaker 1: What we'll do is we'll buy whatever we need and
- 5:28Speaker 1: then she'll get it and then I'll just vemo her back.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So easy peasy. If you have a roommate or a
- 5:33Speaker 1: friend who has a Costco membership and you want to
- 5:34Speaker 1: get something from there, easy fixed. Yeah, Costco is definitely
- 5:38Speaker 1: the way to go if you're shopping as a group
- 5:41Speaker 1: or like with your roommates.
- 5:42Speaker 2: It's definitely food that you can buy in bulk and
- 5:45Speaker 2: it will last you, you know, unless you're like in
- 5:47Speaker 2: a house with ten people and you know you're buying
- 5:50Speaker 2: it just for the week. But either way, Costco is
- 5:53Speaker 2: definitely cheaper than a lot of other grocery stores in
- 5:57Speaker 2: terms of like quantity as well, so you get the
- 6:00Speaker 2: most for your like the best bang for your buck.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Really, my favorite is Trader Joe's. Yes, I talk about
- 6:07Speaker 1: it way too much. Trader Joe's is like cult classic.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I love it, and I found that it's pretty cost
- 6:14Speaker 1: effective as well. Everything is reasonably priced in my opinion,
- 6:20Speaker 1: and they just have so many options. I'm just someone
- 6:23Speaker 1: who gets very bored of food very quickly, so I
- 6:26Speaker 1: like having a ton of options for the week. Love
- 6:28Speaker 1: their frozen meals. Produce isn't the greatest, but I might do.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And then they have all the fun snacks that you
- 6:35Speaker 1: could ever want in life.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and Trader Joe's is great about seasonal options and
- 6:40Speaker 2: like you said, the fun snacks. Like I just I
- 6:43Speaker 2: feel like Trader Joe's is catered to the college population.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Oh totally, Like it's just you can buy you know,
- 6:51Speaker 2: the frozen meals that are like just perfect for a
- 6:54Speaker 2: night where you are too busy or too lazy to cook.
- 6:58Speaker 2: And then you can also, like you said, produce anything
- 7:02Speaker 2: like fresh you can find there as well.
- 7:04Speaker 1: So and they have household essentials too. I just got
- 7:07Speaker 1: some body wash from there because I was just feeling
- 7:09Speaker 1: lazy and I didn't feel like going to Target to
- 7:11Speaker 1: pick up my usual read like skincare. They have like
- 7:14Speaker 1: skincare products too, Yeah, they do, so, I mean Trader
- 7:18Speaker 1: Joe's is just great. I also my this is like
- 7:20Speaker 1: slightly off topic, but they will give you coins for laundry,
- 7:24Speaker 1: so I always go there to get like a roll
- 7:27Speaker 1: of quarters for laundry and birthday cards and flowers. Like, yeah,
- 7:32Speaker 1: they have everything. They just have it all more of
- 7:34Speaker 1: a reason to love it. Oh that's when we didn't
- 7:37Speaker 1: talk about Target. Target they have a grocery section as well. Yeah,
- 7:40Speaker 1: some people when we interviewed y'all said Target was one
- 7:43Speaker 1: of your go tos. So Target again all around great
- 7:48Speaker 1: store because it does have produce, does have a big
- 7:51Speaker 1: stack section, but also you can buy like clothes, books, toys, games, anything. Really,
- 7:57Speaker 1: I do not know a single person who can limit
- 7:59Speaker 1: themselves in Target yeah, I feel like you always come
- 8:02Speaker 1: home with something that you don't need. I mean, it's
- 8:04Speaker 1: because it's all right there exactly. Before we talk more
- 8:08Speaker 1: about tips and tricks about grocery shopping, just wanted to
- 8:11Speaker 1: quickly mention that you can tune into KCPR while you're
- 8:14Speaker 1: grocery shopping. Yes, KCPR ninety one point three. Get some
- 8:19Speaker 1: fun tunes going while you're shopping. Put in your headphones
- 8:23Speaker 1: rock out. You can also find a grocery shopping playlist
- 8:28Speaker 1: made by Kate herself. I did do that. I did
- 8:32Speaker 1: a fall grocery shopping at two.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Did Joe's playlist.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I thought it just captured the essence perfectly on the
- 8:38Speaker 1: mind exactly Like I said, that is what I shape
- 8:41Speaker 1: my existence around.
- 8:43Speaker 3: So I had to make a playlist for it.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Yeah, so tune into that while you're grocery shopping. Now,
- 8:48Speaker 1: let's get into some tips and tricks on how to
- 8:50Speaker 1: make grocery shopping, eating well, and even debating over food
- 8:53Speaker 1: related issues with roommates easier for everyone.
- 8:56Speaker 2: So one obstacle you might face is is not having
- 9:01Speaker 2: enough time to cook. This is why meal prepping can
- 9:05Speaker 2: be clutched. I myself have never actually partaken in meal prep.
- 9:10Speaker 2: But just before we started this episode, I was talking
- 9:12Speaker 2: to Kate about it, saying, how I absolutely need to start.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's.
- 9:17Speaker 1: So easy, So let me give you my tips. I
- 9:19Speaker 1: don't essentially, I don't. I don't necessarily meal prep. I
- 9:23Speaker 1: more so just have like select things cooked and ready
- 9:26Speaker 1: to go so that I can just pair it with whatever.
- 9:29Speaker 1: So my favorite thing to do is get a rotisserie chicken.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Those things are massive, obviously, so my roommate and I
- 9:35Speaker 1: split it, so that's in the fridge ready to go,
- 9:38Speaker 1: take it out whenever I need it. And then you
- 9:40Speaker 1: compare that with rice. You can pick up those bags
- 9:44Speaker 1: that you can heat in the microwave, or you can
- 9:46Speaker 1: cook that yourself.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Tradder Joe's yeah as the best. Like rice that you
- 9:50Speaker 2: just pop in the microwave for like a minute.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Yeah, done in three minutes, m hm, So you can
- 9:55Speaker 1: do that. You can also make pasta ahead of time too.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I am someone who who is I consider myself to
- 10:02Speaker 1: be a very healthy person, but it's hard for me
- 10:05Speaker 1: to eat fruits and vegetables when they are not ready
- 10:07Speaker 1: to go because the act of washing them and cutting
- 10:10Speaker 1: them and cooking them is just a hassle. So I
- 10:12Speaker 1: carve out a day where I just get that already,
- 10:14Speaker 1: like I'll make my broccoli or my Brussels sprouts or
- 10:17Speaker 1: my potatoes or whatever I need, have that ready to go,
- 10:19Speaker 1: and then heat it up whenever I need. And then
- 10:22Speaker 1: in addition to that fruit every morning, but I like
- 10:25Speaker 1: make sure to wash it ahead of time because that's
- 10:28Speaker 1: just annoying. You don't want to deal with that.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I always get my fruit from Costco and like buy
- 10:34Speaker 2: the fruit in bulk because I'm eating it like every
- 10:36Speaker 2: day every morning, like you said, And like apples especially,
- 10:40Speaker 2: they will last in my fridge for like a long time.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Totally.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I forget about my apples all the time, but they're
- 10:46Speaker 1: still good. Yeah, And you just grab it, wash it,
- 10:48Speaker 1: go and you're set. So another thing that can be
- 10:52Speaker 1: tricky when grocery shopping is knowing how much fridge and
- 10:57Speaker 1: freezer space you have, especially in real guards to your roommates.
- 11:02Speaker 1: So we get it if you have a small freezer,
- 11:06Speaker 1: Like how do you navigate that? That's something me and
- 11:09Speaker 1: my roommate have like not fought over, but we just
- 11:12Speaker 1: like had to have a discussion, like how are we
- 11:14Speaker 1: going to divide the space up.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Yeah, us too.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I mean I am the freezer hog. I will admit it, say, yeah,
- 11:21Speaker 1: I'm the one that takes it. But I always make
- 11:24Speaker 1: sure to be considerate of my roommates, and I communicate
- 11:27Speaker 1: my shelf space whenever I have something extra, I just yeah,
- 11:30Speaker 1: I took the entire bottom shelf of the freezer. But
- 11:32Speaker 1: I'm I always make sure to emphasize, like, hey, guys,
- 11:35Speaker 1: there's room in here. Squeeze your stuff on in. I
- 11:37Speaker 1: don't care.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I only have one roommate, so we kind of
- 11:42Speaker 2: divide it like directly down the middle. But what's interesting
- 11:46Speaker 2: is like I take up more freezer space, and she
- 11:48Speaker 2: takes up more fridge space, cause like she just cooks more,
- 11:53Speaker 2: whereas I'm like, let me just grab.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Something and go.
- 11:56Speaker 2: So it's it's interesting to see that. And we have
- 11:59Speaker 2: a lot more space than we think, because we have
- 12:02Speaker 2: like one section of our fridge and freezer that's just
- 12:05Speaker 2: like empty because it's like a dividing line. But we
- 12:09Speaker 2: definitely have more space than you think. And I've seen
- 12:11Speaker 2: freezers and fridges that are packed.
- 12:13Speaker 3: To the max.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Yeah, they'll scare me, honestly. Yeah, but how do you
- 12:16Speaker 1: find anything? Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. Yeah,
- 12:19Speaker 1: so much respect for that.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:21Speaker 1: No, make sure that you communicate on that space for
- 12:23Speaker 1: your fridge, in your freezer, because a war can be
- 12:26Speaker 1: started over that, for sure. I have heard of many
- 12:29Speaker 1: arguments happening over that kind of space. So same thing
- 12:32Speaker 1: for cupboards and cabinets too. Yeah, if you have your
- 12:35Speaker 1: own designated cabinet, perfect.
- 12:38Speaker 2: And also like navigating like who's buying what food and
- 12:43Speaker 2: if you're gonna share that food. Like that's definitely a
- 12:46Speaker 2: conversation to have when grocery shopping because again, if you're
- 12:50Speaker 2: going to someplace like Costco where you're buying in bulk,
- 12:52Speaker 2: maybe you split it fifty to fifty. You buy something
- 12:55Speaker 2: that's you know, in large quantity, you split it. You
- 12:58Speaker 2: like split the cost split food, and that's great, but
- 13:02Speaker 2: you just definitely, I would say, have conversations with your roommates,
- 13:07Speaker 2: with your friends, whoever you are going grocery shopping with,
- 13:09Speaker 2: and figure out, you know, are you buying just for
- 13:12Speaker 2: yourself and like nobody else is gonna eat it, or
- 13:15Speaker 2: are you buying as a group. Definitely have those conversations
- 13:18Speaker 2: and be willing to have those conversations, like it's it
- 13:22Speaker 2: involves money and involves food. It's not something that you
- 13:24Speaker 2: should feel shy about. So definitely just bring it up,
- 13:28Speaker 2: see catch a vibe, feel them out and figure that out.
- 13:32Speaker 1: It can honestly be super fun too, because one of
- 13:35Speaker 1: my roommates makes the best salads and I just I
- 13:38Speaker 1: told her straight up. I was like, I will pay
- 13:40Speaker 1: you half of the cost to get all the ingredients
- 13:43Speaker 1: you need as long as you give me half the
- 13:45Speaker 1: saladi make Yeah, And she was like okay, down and
- 13:47Speaker 1: I ate it and it was so good. So shout
- 13:50Speaker 1: out to Jenna for making me eat my vegetables.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Girls, Yeah, And.
- 13:53Speaker 2: It can really be like as easy as that, Like, hey,
- 13:56Speaker 2: like I noticed you cook something. I smelled so good,
- 13:59Speaker 2: Like I loved that. Can we do like a meal
- 14:01Speaker 2: together and like split the cost?
- 14:02Speaker 3: Yeah, which is so fun.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Okay, now that we've talked about some of the potential
- 14:08Speaker 2: conflicts or discussions that you will need to have, let's
- 14:11Speaker 2: move on to how you can actually save your money
- 14:13Speaker 2: while still being able to eat healthy.
- 14:16Speaker 1: So one thing that I learned about recently was the
- 14:18Speaker 1: CalFresh EBT project, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Program
- 14:22Speaker 1: or SNAP.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Have you heard about that I have not I know
- 14:25Speaker 2: of EBT, but I don't know any of the specifics.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Okay, So essentially I learned this from a soorty meeting
- 14:31Speaker 1: that I was in and it was so educational and
- 14:34Speaker 1: so I just want to share with you all. So
- 14:36Speaker 1: you get money from the government to spend at local
- 14:38Speaker 1: grocery stores and even the farmer's market, which is so clutch.
- 14:43Speaker 1: We talked about it and we learned that as college students,
- 14:47Speaker 1: we shouldn't even feel guilty about applying for this and
- 14:50Speaker 1: feeling like we're taking away from people who could potentially
- 14:54Speaker 1: get this money, because there's enough to go around and
- 14:56Speaker 1: it actually stimulates local economy.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Oh love that. Yeah, So college.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Students are eligible and all you have to do is
- 15:04Speaker 1: apply an interview for it, and.
- 15:07Speaker 3: I mean chances are you'll get it. We don't know.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I haven't done it myself personally, but I know of
- 15:12Speaker 1: people who use EBT and they said it was a
- 15:14Speaker 1: pretty easy process.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Well, and it doesn't hurt to apply. Like, what's the
- 15:18Speaker 2: worst they.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Can say, No, exactly, you're getting money to spend on
- 15:22Speaker 1: fresh groceries.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and like you mentioned farmer's market, that was something
- 15:26Speaker 2: we didn't talk about because it's not necessarily a grocery store,
- 15:29Speaker 2: but it's definitely a great place for local produce and
- 15:33Speaker 2: you're supporting local businesses, so that is.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Something every Thursday.
- 15:38Speaker 2: You know, if you can find time to go, you
- 15:40Speaker 2: can make a whole night of it because you can
- 15:41Speaker 2: buy a meal there, enjoy it there, listening to some
- 15:44Speaker 2: live music while also technically grocery shopping.
- 15:48Speaker 1: And it's definitely on the more expensive side, so this
- 15:51Speaker 1: EBT program would be especially helpful if you want to
- 15:55Speaker 1: buy your produce there. There are other ways to shop
- 15:57Speaker 1: smart as well, so make sure you're on the lookout
- 16:00Speaker 1: for coupons like a.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Little old lady.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Yes, extreme coupon her Yeah, exactly, rocket own it. And
- 16:06Speaker 1: then buying in bulk is also very handy, like Emma
- 16:09Speaker 1: and her Costco trips.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Yes, all the time, I stock up. Yeah, I'm like
- 16:15Speaker 2: COVID scare, Like I have to have everything just in so.
- 16:20Speaker 3: It's like ingrained in US now. Yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Well, in Cosco is also a great place for buying
- 16:25Speaker 2: things like toilet paper, shampoo conditioner, like things that you
- 16:30Speaker 2: need to have, paper towels, anything like that that you
- 16:34Speaker 2: need to have in bulk. Just buy it, have it
- 16:36Speaker 2: on hand.
- 16:37Speaker 1: And you're saving money in the long run because it's
- 16:39Speaker 1: not like you're having to run to the store every
- 16:41Speaker 1: single week.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:43Speaker 2: It's like a little expense that you're not even thinking about. Yeah. Okay,
- 16:48Speaker 2: so we talked about meal prepping earlier, but in case
- 16:51Speaker 2: that isn't your vibe, here are our favorite easy meals
- 16:55Speaker 2: to make.
- 16:55Speaker 1: So, like I said earlier, I just don't like eating
- 16:57Speaker 1: the same thing over and over again. So I just
- 17:00Speaker 1: follow a very very simple structure that keeps me so
- 17:03Speaker 1: full all the time. I make sure that all of
- 17:06Speaker 1: my meals contain a fat carbon of protein, which is
- 17:09Speaker 1: easier than you think it would be. So for breakfast,
- 17:13Speaker 1: the thing that keeps me full for hours is turkey, bacon,
- 17:16Speaker 1: potatoes and fruit. I just eat this combo all the time,
- 17:19Speaker 1: and it's so easy to prep because all I do
- 17:21Speaker 1: is I just like, chop up my potatoes, put a
- 17:23Speaker 1: little all of oil and some seasoning on them, throw
- 17:25Speaker 1: them in the air far get those ready, and then
- 17:27Speaker 1: turkey bacon in the air fry are super easy in
- 17:29Speaker 1: the morning, chop up my fruit ready to go, easy
- 17:33Speaker 1: dinner chicken, rice, vegetables. I know that sounds so jimbro
- 17:36Speaker 1: of me.
- 17:37Speaker 2: But it's a classic.
- 17:38Speaker 3: I'll own it.
- 17:39Speaker 1: And my vegetables are always fun too, you know, like
- 17:41Speaker 1: I'll just tray bake a bunch and I'll throw like
- 17:43Speaker 1: a bunch of seasonings and salt on them.
- 17:46Speaker 3: So good.
- 17:47Speaker 1: And then yeah, for protein, I know it can be
- 17:51Speaker 1: so hard because cooking chicken can be scary, Cooking fish
- 17:54Speaker 1: can be scary.
- 17:55Speaker 3: I've I've actually given myself food poisoning.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Before my goodness, like very brief, but like I did
- 18:01Speaker 1: not cook my salmon all the way and I did
- 18:03Speaker 1: not feel good afterwards. So pre cooked stuff, especially like
- 18:07Speaker 1: rotisserie chicken, chicken, apple, sausage, and then easy meat to
- 18:12Speaker 1: make like ground turkey especially, you can just monitor that,
- 18:16Speaker 1: make sure that that's cooked through.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Very easy to make. As long as you're eating.
- 18:20Speaker 1: A balanced meal with you know, your carb which can
- 18:24Speaker 1: be like rice, potatoes, pasta, carbs, vegetables, fruits, et cetera,
- 18:31Speaker 1: and then protein, you're good.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Yeah, So I totally respect you for that, Kate, and
- 18:37Speaker 2: I love you just like outline that, and I will
- 18:41Speaker 2: definitely start doing that in the future. However, where I'm
- 18:44Speaker 2: at now is like full girl dinner every night twenty
- 18:49Speaker 2: four to seven. I just do not think ahead at all.
- 18:54Speaker 2: I do not plan my meals out. I am so
- 18:57Speaker 2: bad at like meal prepping in any sense of the word.
- 19:02Speaker 2: I literally will be home doing nothing, watching TV, doing homework, whatever,
- 19:08Speaker 2: and I will be so hungry, but I just don't
- 19:10Speaker 2: know what to make because I don't have anything prepared.
- 19:13Speaker 2: I don't want to cook. So I just like I'm
- 19:16Speaker 2: a full snacker. Like I'll make a salad and I'll
- 19:19Speaker 2: be eating my salad as I'm like staring at my fridge,
- 19:21Speaker 2: like what am I actually going to eat for dinner?
- 19:24Speaker 2: Like what do I do? I'll grab an apple and
- 19:26Speaker 2: be like what next? Like is an apple a meal?
- 19:29Speaker 2: Like can I stop there?
- 19:30Speaker 3: No, no, no, that's not the thing.
- 19:32Speaker 2: It's like I have no idea so full snack. I've
- 19:36Speaker 2: like literally done, like I've made this is like I'm
- 19:40Speaker 2: ashamed of this to.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Say, okay, but I'm ready. I'm literally bracing myself.
- 19:44Speaker 3: It's a full girl dinner. Okay.
- 19:47Speaker 2: So I made guacamole and I didn't After I made it,
- 19:51Speaker 2: I realized I had no tortilla chips or anything. All
- 19:54Speaker 2: I had were some Cheetos, But like only the crumbs.
- 19:58Speaker 2: So I dumbed the Cheetos in to the bowl because
- 20:00Speaker 2: I didn't want to get my hands like.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Gross with the Cheeto powder. No you didn't.
- 20:05Speaker 2: And then I just took a fork. Oh I know.
- 20:08Speaker 1: And then I also that wasn't what I was expectingnes oh, it.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Was like that. And then I had a can of
- 20:15Speaker 2: black olives because I love olives, So then I also
- 20:18Speaker 2: had olives on top of that.
- 20:19Speaker 3: You're like a super picky eater, but you like olives.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I love only black olives, but I love so I
- 20:26Speaker 2: don't do olives. They are so good.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Wait, that's kind of cute of us, like the fan
- 20:30Speaker 1: who likes olives and.
- 20:31Speaker 3: The love that.
- 20:34Speaker 2: But yeah, so that was like my peak girl dinner moment,
- 20:39Speaker 2: and I was just like.
- 20:40Speaker 3: What are you doing with your life? Okay, we're gonna
- 20:43Speaker 3: we're gonna unpack this later. We're gonna talk about that
- 20:45Speaker 3: for real. But yeah, I'm I'm not perfect. I mean the.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Weeks where I have midterms and just things to do
- 20:52Speaker 1: every single day, Like I am stalking up on my
- 20:54Speaker 1: Trader Joe's frozen meals. I keep them handy. I always
- 20:57Speaker 1: have at least one or two in my freezer just
- 20:59Speaker 1: in case I don't get to that, and then sometimes
- 21:02Speaker 1: all I want.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Is a bowl of pasta with butter.
- 21:05Speaker 1: So yeah, it's hard eating in college.
- 21:10Speaker 3: It's so difficult.
- 21:11Speaker 2: So even just finding the motivation to like go grocery
- 21:15Speaker 2: shopping and then to cook what you bought, like it
- 21:18Speaker 2: can be a real struggle.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Yeah, So don't feel guilty if you're not able to
- 21:23Speaker 1: have the most well rounded, beautiful meals.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and sometimes what you deserve is just going out deep.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, That's why we have yeah, I mean yeah,
- 21:34Speaker 1: Also if things are looking a little bit difficult for you,
- 21:37Speaker 1: if you can't get to the grocery store, Instacart baby
- 21:41Speaker 1: oh yeah yeah, or like Hello Fresh, Yeah, like find
- 21:45Speaker 1: something like that and just make it a fellow Fresh.
- 21:47Speaker 1: So bad, right, my roommate gets food delivered, and I'm
- 21:50Speaker 1: always like, oh, I know, every time I hear about
- 21:54Speaker 1: like a different meal prep service, I just want it
- 21:58Speaker 1: so badly. Same, Just remember it's you do you in
- 22:03Speaker 1: the end. We're all here, we're all just trying to survive.
- 22:07Speaker 1: We're doing our best. So if you can eat your
- 22:10Speaker 1: fruits and vegetables and proteins and carbs and everything, go
- 22:14Speaker 1: for it.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Love you for that.
- 22:16Speaker 2: And if you're doing it through, if you're doing it
- 22:18Speaker 2: through girl dinner, I appreciate you. I am you.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Yeah, just like grabbing just a bugget lunch, some fruit.
- 22:27Speaker 1: That's such a vibe, it's so good.
- 22:29Speaker 2: I okay, I do that, And I'm just like charcuterie
- 22:32Speaker 2: board exactly, I make it aesthetic.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Now, a charcoterie board is a girl dinner.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Yes, except it's like a glorified girl dinner.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Oh exactly. Yeah. I did that all the time freshman year.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Well, and that's a good thing for Like grocery shopping.
- 22:46Speaker 2: You can buy crackers, cheese, meat, like carrot sticks, like
- 22:51Speaker 2: you can fully make do We've.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Been rambling on so much about our little meals, but
- 22:55Speaker 1: we hope that you got something out of that.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and also go with a plan when you're going
- 23:01Speaker 2: grocery shopping.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Totally, I'll save you. I always make a list.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I have my essentials that I know I need to
- 23:07Speaker 2: buy to get me through the week, the month, whatever
- 23:09Speaker 2: I'm shopping for. And then also let yourself deviate from
- 23:13Speaker 2: that a little. If you see something you like, grab it. Oh,
- 23:16Speaker 2: have fun, get your ice cream, get your don't be
- 23:19Speaker 2: afraid to buy yourself a sweet treat to try something new.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Like I'm always i am again resident picky eater here,
- 23:26Speaker 2: but I always try to branch out with at least
- 23:28Speaker 2: one thing while I'm grocery shopping. So let yourself live
- 23:33Speaker 2: a little go in with a plan, but also leave
- 23:35Speaker 2: room for a surprise.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Love it, Love the mindset. Okay, before we end, what
- 23:40Speaker 1: are you making today to eat? Or are you going
- 23:43Speaker 1: grocery shopping today? I am not going grocery shopping today.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Good for you.
- 23:47Speaker 2: It's a Sunday, it's gonna be I make a rule
- 23:50Speaker 2: of like not going grocery shopping during the weekend.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Don't do it, because don't do it. It's really I
- 23:56Speaker 1: went yesterday and I wanted to cry. Yeah, I was
- 23:59Speaker 1: gonna say, it's really.
- 24:00Speaker 2: It's just it's out of fear of like seeing so
- 24:03Speaker 2: many people waiting in that line.
- 24:05Speaker 3: I just can't handle it.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Or getting into a car crash in the parking lot
- 24:09Speaker 1: of Trader.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Yes. Yes, spaces are so tight. People are crazy. Everyone's
- 24:13Speaker 2: walking everywhere. It's like Costco their front little section where
- 24:17Speaker 2: everyone's just walking and like if you're trying to drive
- 24:19Speaker 2: through there.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Good luck. No, I don't run any when my head
- 24:21Speaker 3: down and just walk. Yeah.
- 24:24Speaker 2: So yeah, I don't go on the weekends, which is
- 24:27Speaker 2: probably why grocery shopping is like such a challenge for me.
- 24:30Speaker 2: I just like don't ever go on the weekends, and
- 24:33Speaker 2: finding time during the week can be hard, but it's
- 24:36Speaker 2: just it's ultimately better.
- 24:38Speaker 3: For my mental health. Okay, well, girls, got to eat.
- 24:40Speaker 3: So what are you eating today?
- 24:42Speaker 2: Okay, today, I am probably gonna make salmon. I have
- 24:46Speaker 2: some frozen salmon at home, and I've actually recently been
- 24:50Speaker 2: into making my own French fries O to like go
- 24:53Speaker 2: with that. I have some broccoli, so I'll do broccoli
- 24:55Speaker 2: salmon and then I'll make some French fries. That's my
- 24:58Speaker 2: air fryer. And like, okay again, I'm like such a
- 25:02Speaker 2: dumb college girl. But making French fries, trying to cut
- 25:05Speaker 2: the potato into like French fry shape was actually one
- 25:08Speaker 2: of the most challenging things. I know.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Cutting potatoes is difficult.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Well because I was like I was looking at the
- 25:14Speaker 2: recipe and it's like, okay, like I can wash the potato,
- 25:17Speaker 2: I can throw some season in there, I can throw
- 25:19Speaker 2: them in the air fire, but cutting them into the
- 25:21Speaker 2: like cube. I was just like, what the heck?
- 25:23Speaker 1: Yeah, no, too much work, but I respect you for it,
- 25:27Speaker 1: love it.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Okay, So are you going? You said you want gros shopping.
- 25:30Speaker 3: I should go Goro shopping yesterday.
- 25:32Speaker 2: So what are you making today?
- 25:33Speaker 1: I have so much leftover pasta in my fridge right now,
- 25:36Speaker 1: to the point I'm like, it doesn't sound good, but
- 25:39Speaker 1: I just need to eat it. And then I got
- 25:42Speaker 1: some like frozen turkey meatballs to with that, so I
- 25:45Speaker 1: need to make that. And then for some reason, I
- 25:48Speaker 1: can't get this meal out of my head and I
- 25:51Speaker 1: need to make it tonight.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Or else I will be devastated.
- 25:53Speaker 1: I have so much shrimp in my freezer. Emma, Why
- 25:56Speaker 1: I have so much shrimp Because every time I cook it,
- 25:59Speaker 1: my whole entire our apartment smells like shrimp, and I
- 26:01Speaker 1: feel guilty. So I'm but I need to shrimp. I
- 26:04Speaker 1: want it so bad.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Like can you light candles? Yeah, get some for breeze.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I don't know, I'm gonna open the windows, I'm gonna
- 26:10Speaker 1: open the door. I'm gonna make my shrimp. And then
- 26:12Speaker 1: I got I don't know if you know this, but
- 26:14Speaker 1: it's like the roasted frozen corn from Trader Joe's. No,
- 26:18Speaker 1: it's really good. It's like a little charred oh delicious.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Have that with the shrimp, some rice and broccoli like.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Its sounds so good.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Okay, So we're feeling like seafood today, yes, okay, I
- 26:31Speaker 2: love seafood always. Yes, I'm picky, so not always. I
- 26:34Speaker 2: really only like salmon, but yes, love a good seafood option. Okay, Well,
- 26:40Speaker 2: that's all the time we have for today. One last
- 26:43Speaker 2: piece of advice. Everyone has to eat, so make sure
- 26:46Speaker 2: to carve out time in your schedule to go grocery shop.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Emma, I'm literally looking at you right now. Okay,
