- 0:38every episode takes you on a journey through sports, science,
- 0:42history and all the fascinating corners of our world.
- 0:46Today we are exploring some of the largest and oldest temples
- 0:49in India. A temple is a special place
- 0:52where people go to pray, think quietly and celebrate festivals.
- 0:57In India, many temples are also like outdoor museums.
- 1:01They show art carved in stone, careful geometry in their
- 1:04shapes, and smart engineering that has survived earthquakes,
- 1:08rain and heat for hundreds or even thousands of years.
- 1:23Let's start with what makes a temple.
- 1:24Well, a temple. Many Indian temples have a main
- 1:28tower In the southern part of India.
- 1:30This tower over the central shrine is called a vamana, and
- 1:34the tall gateway towers are called gopirams.
- 1:37In the northern part of India, the main tower is called a
- 1:40shakara. Inside, there is often a hall
- 1:43called a mandapa where people gather, and a quiet inner room
- 1:47called the garbhagraha, or the sanctum, where the main idol is
- 1:51placed. Around the main building, there
- 1:53can be courtyards, water tanks for ritual baths and long
- 1:57corridors for walking. Now let's meet one of the
- 2:00largest temple complexes in India by area the
- 2:04Sriranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu.
- 2:08It covers about 156 acres, which is bigger than many city parks.
- 2:13It has multiple rings of walls and streets inside the complex,
- 2:17almost like layers of a giant square onion, but all made of
- 2:21stone and brick, with markets, homes for priests and many
- 2:25smaller shrines. During big festivals, 10s of
- 2:28thousands of visitors walk through its tall gateways.
- 2:32Its tallest gateway tower rises high above the trees and can be
- 2:36seen from far away. The temple is active every day
- 2:40with lamps lit, bells ringing, and long lines of people moving
- 2:44with patience and respect. Another big and famous temple in
- 2:48the South is the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai.
- 2:52This temple is known for its colorful towers covered with
- 2:55detailed statues of people, animals, and scenes from
- 2:58stories. The complex has long corridors
- 3:01where the ceilings are painted in bright patterns.
- 3:04There is also a sacred tank called the Golden Lotus Tank.
- 3:08People visit, sit on the steps and watch the reflection of the
- 3:12towers in the water. Artists, craftspeople and
- 3:16builders worked for many generations to make these
- 3:19details and they continue to maintain them today.
- 3:22If you travel to Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu, you can see the
- 3:25Brahadiz were a temple built around the year 1010 by King
- 3:30Rajaraja Cholai. It has a huge granite vamana
- 3:34that rises about 66 meters. Granite is a very Hard Rock and
- 3:39moving it without modern cranes was a big challenge.
- 3:42Builders use sloped ramps and teams of workers to lift heavy
- 3:46blocks into place. The stone carvings include
- 3:49dancers, musicians and inscriptions carved in the
- 3:52ancient Tamil language that record donations, festivals and
- 3:56rules for the temple. In the city of Bobineshwar in
- 3:59Edisa, the Lingaraja temple shows the tall, curving Shakara
- 4:04style of the East. Its tower looks like many
- 4:07stacked layers rising to a point made of sandstone blocks fitted
- 4:12together. Around its stand dozens of
- 4:14smaller shrines, creating the feeling of a city of stone.
- 4:19The temple grounds are neat and orderly, and visitors remove
- 4:22their shoes and walk on smooth paths worn by many feet over
- 4:26many years. Now, what about very old
- 4:29temples? India has several that date back
- 4:32many centuries. The shore temple at
- 4:34Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu was built in the early 7 hundreds
- 4:39along the Bay of Bengal. Its builders carved parts of it
- 4:42from granite blocks and decorated the walls with lions,
- 4:45bulls and geometric patterns. Sea, wind and salt have worn
- 4:50down some surfaces, but the shape and strength are still
- 4:54clear. Another remarkable place is the
- 4:56Kailasa temple at Ellora in Maharashtra.
- 5:00It was carved in the seven hundreds and eight hundreds out
- 5:02of a single rock Cliff from the top down.
- 5:05Imagine starting at the roof level and removing millions of
- 5:08kilograms of rock to reveal pillars, halls and statues.
- 5:13There are no separate blocks to take apart.
- 5:15The whole structure is one piece of stone.
- 5:18Here's a quick check in question.
- 5:21Do you think any Indian temple has a hall with more than 1000
- 5:24pillars, each carved with different designs?
- 5:31Yes. The Thousand Pillar Hall at the
- 5:33Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam and the 1000 pillar
- 5:37halls at other South Indian temples show rows and rows of
- 5:41pillars, each with its own patterns, made with careful
- 5:44symmetry. Let's look at how people built
- 5:47and maintain these places. Temple builders often used
- 5:50interlocking stones instead of modern cement.
- 5:53They measured with ropes, wooden scales and simple tools, but the
- 5:57results are straight, balanced and stable.
- 6:00Many temples include step tanks that collect rainwater, which
- 6:04helps in a country with hot summers.
- 6:07Temple towns grew up around these complexes with market
- 6:10selling flowers, lamps, sweets and small copper or brass items
- 6:15used in rituals. Did you know that some temples
- 6:18were planned with astronomy in mind?
- 6:20Certain doorways line up with the sun on special days.
- 6:25In some places, the first ray of sunlight on a festival morning
- 6:29shines directly into the inner sanctum.
- 6:32This required careful planning of angles, heights and positions
- 6:36over long distances. Let's add a trivia moment with
- 6:39something new. Which Indian state is home to
- 6:42the Sun Temple at Madura, where the first sunlight on certain
- 6:46days lights up the inner steps of a grand tank?
- 6:53It is in Gujarat. The temple includes a large
- 6:56stepped tank called the Surya Khand, where the geometry of the
- 6:59steppes creates striking, repeating patterns.
- 7:03Here's a yes or no question that introduces a new seaside detail.
- 7:07Is the Somnath Temple, located along the coastline facing the
- 7:11Arabian Sea, where visitors can hear waves while standing in the
- 7:15courtyard? Yes, Somnath stands near the
- 7:21shore in Gujarat and the open view to the sea is a special
- 7:25part of the visit. Another temple famous for size
- 7:28is the Animal Layer Temple in Tirvanamalai, Tamil Nadu.
- 7:33Its high gateway towers mark the temple from far away, and the
- 7:36complex includes long, straight corridors and open courtyards
- 7:41that fill during festivals. The city around it provides food
- 7:44stalls, flower markets and small shops that serve pilgrims all
- 7:48year. To understand oldest, it helps
- 7:52to know that stone temples came after wood and brick structures
- 7:55that did not last as long. Among the oldest surviving
- 7:59temple structures is the Mandeshwari temple in Bihar,
- 8:02which inscriptions date to around the first or second
- 8:05century of the Common Era. It is small compared to later
- 8:08temples, but it shows early forms that later became common,
- 8:12like a central shrine and simple but strong walls.
- 8:16This temple is still used for worship, which means it has been
- 8:20active for many centuries. Let's bring in a material
- 8:23challenge. Is there a temple built mainly
- 8:26of white marble that shines in sunlight and has delicate
- 8:29carvings so thin you can see light through them?
- 8:35Yes, the Dilwara temples at Mount Abu in Rajasthan are
- 8:39famous for white marble pillars, ceilings and screens that look
- 8:43almost lace like because of a fine carving.
- 8:46Here is another new material question.
- 8:49Which South Indian temple is known for soapstone carvings
- 8:52where jewelry and hair strands appear very fine and detailed
- 8:56under close view? The Hoisels wear.
- 9:01A temple at Holabudu in Karnataka is carved from
- 9:05soapstone, A softer stone that allows for very detailed work,
- 9:09including tiny chains and beads carved from single pieces.
- 9:13Let's add one more tall fact in the form of a question.
- 9:17Is there a modern tall gopuram on the West Coast of India that
- 9:20visitors can ride an elevator to the top of for a wide view of
- 9:23the sea? Yes, at Mirjshwar in Karnataka,
- 9:30the Talgopyrim has an elevator that takes people up to viewing
- 9:33floors, which is a newer feature not seen in ancient towers.
- 9:38Before we wrap up, here are a few tips for visiting these
- 9:40places. Wear comfortable clothes that
- 9:43cover shoulders and knees because many temples have dress
- 9:47codes. Remove your shoes were asked,
- 9:50and be respectful by speaking softly.
- 9:52Inside the halls. Look for signs that describe the
- 9:55art and history. If guides are available, they
- 9:58can point out small carvings and inscriptions you might miss.
- 10:02Bring a bottle of water and take breaks under shade if it is hot.
- 10:06Remember that for many people, these temples are not just old
- 10:10buildings, they are active places of worship, so following
- 10:14the rules helps everyone have a good visit.
- 10:16Let's recap what we learned today.
- 10:18A temple usually includes a tower, a hall, and an inner
- 10:22sanctum, plus courtyards and water tanks.
- 10:26Some of the largest complexes in India include the Sri
- 10:29Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam and in the
- 10:32Meenakshiman temple in Madurai with many halls, tall towers and
- 10:37busy streets. Inside the Brai Hadees were a
- 10:39temple shows how hard granite can be shaped into a 66 meter
- 10:44tall vamana, while the Lingaraja temple shows the tall curved
- 10:48Shakara style. Very old temples include the
- 10:51Shore temple at Mahabalipuram and the Kailasa temple at Illora
- 10:56carved out of rock. One of the oldest surviving
- 10:58temple sites is the Mandeshwari temple in Bihar.
- 11:02We also discovered new facts through our questions, like the
- 11:05Sun Temple at Madura in Gujarat, the seaside location of Somnath,
- 11:10the marble marvels of the Dulwara temples, the soapstone
- 11:13details at Hoiselswara, and the elevator view from the
- 11:17Mirajwargopyaram. India's temples are full of art,
- 11:21math, engineering, and daily life, and they welcome curious
- 11:25minds that look closely and learn with care.
- 11:33Thanks for exploring with me today.
